The article deals with stabilisation and regeneration of Ce02 and Ce02/Zr02 based Pt water gas shift catalysts, subject to high initial deactivation. The reaction gas species effect on the catalyst deactivation was investigated by H2-TPR. Activity measurements enabled the effect of different promoters, some added to the Ce02 based catalysts and some to the Ce02/Zr02 based Pt catalysts, to be investigated. The catalysts were also characterised by BET and CO-TPR. Deactivated catalysts activity was restored by using various regeneration methods. Of the two selected carriers the Ce02/Zr02 based Pt catalyst showed the highest resilience to deactivation. For the two different carriers, Ce02 and Ce02/Zr02, Wand Re were the best promoters when the catalyst was subject to deactivation. Experiments with Hr TPR indicate a fast initial change in the platinum oxides concentration and composition. The CO-TPR was used to make conclusions about the various regeneration effects of water and oxygen on the catalyst. Finally it is suggested that not one deactivation mechanism is possible and which mechanism that dominates is dependant on the catalyst and the reaction gas composition.

For lubrication of open gear drives applied in rotary furnaces, often gear greases are used as well as for lubrication of gear boxes in difficult sealing conditions. The selection of the gear grease influences strongly the wear behavior. Investigations with flow greases NLGI 00 were made in a back-to-back test rig determining the weight loss due to wear acc. to the standardised procedure ISO 14635 part 3. Different influences like base oil viscosity, thickener type and additional solid lubricant type were analysed. Only the type and amount of solid lubricant shows a significant influence on the weight loss due to wear. Finally, a linear wear coefficient clT according to the calculation method of the wear amount according to Plewe is derived and can be used to transfer the test results to any gears in practice.

The increased consumption and importation of fluorspar and cryolite (1)3/ in recent years, and especially the addition of fluorine compounds to drinking water in the United States, have aroused renewed interest in the properties of such compounds and possible health hazards incident to their use. It has been suggested that the issuance of a revision and elaboration of Information Circular 7311, The Hazards of Hydrogen Fluoride Poisoning in the Mineral and Allied Industries, which hay been out of print for some time, would be opportune. Fluorine minerals have been known since the Middle Ages. Fluorine was isolated in 1886 by Moisson (2).

Recent investigations of finely ground materials have verified Rittinger's law of crushing.4, This law states that the surface produced is proportional to the work expended in the crushing operation. Thus, for a unit of work applied to crushing quartz a definite amount of surface will be produced. Obviously, this amount of work applied to some other mineral will not produce equivalent surface. It follows that in an investigation of mill practice, where ore is being crashed, the relative crushing resistance of the component minerals must be known. In a previous investigation of the Rittinger law,5 the crashing resistance that is, the work required to produce a unit of surface - was accurately determined for quartz. The surface values were obtained by means of the rite of dissolution of quartz in hydrofluoric acid.6 If it were possible so to measure surface on other minerals the determination of relative crushing, resistance would be a simple matter; however, the results obtained on minerals other than quartz by a dissolution method were not encouraging. Moreover, if accurate values could be obtained by dissolution this method could probably never be used on a mixture of minerals such as occurs in an ore.

To benefit two endangered fish species, waterfowl and other wildlife, and water quality in the lake and downstream, the decision was made to remove levees that had been in place since the 1950s. Because the levee material was mainly dredged up lake bottom peat, it was decided to pare down the sites chosen for breaching with dozers and trackhoes. This material was spread out onsite instead of expensive removal by dumping elsewhere. Because of the instability of the final pared down levees and the lake level being at a ten-year low, it was decided to use explosives to breach four of the sites. After over five months of earthmoving and two weeks of loading holes, the levees were detonated the day before Halloween, 2007. Somehow pumpkins showed up to be part of the explosive activities.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes a system to determine the position and heading of a continuous mining machine during the maneuvers required at the face area of a mine. The system consists of commercially available angular position sensors and a computer interface developed and tested at the Bureau. The sensors employed are laser-based scanning devices that report the angular location of retroreflective targets within their 90° field-of-view. The targets are mounted on the continuous mining machine; the laser scanners are mounted on an external reference structure. The computer interface consists of a single-board computer-controller programmed to gather and process the angular position information, and to calculate the machine's position and heading relative to the reference structure. A sensor fusion algorithm will be incorporated into the computer interface programming to increase the accuracy and reliability of the system.

After his return to San Francisco, Mr. Bain, in view of the importance of his paper and its discussion, kindly furnished it in full. The delay in its publication (since it was received in April last) has been due, partly to the circumstance that other contributions had meanwhile acquired the "right of way," and partly to the consideration that, the situation contemplated in Mr. Bain's paper having remained practically unchanged, the paper and its discussion would not lose force or timeliness by this lapse of time.-J. S.] No acute observer of public affairs can have failed to observe a growing disposition on the part of the public to change emphasis in government from political equality to social justice. When our own government was founded it was felt to be sufficient to secure to each individual the fullest possible freedom of opportunity, and such a scheme was excellently adapted to the rapid development of a large territory having a small population. As the number of people in a given area increases, there are more points of contact and conflict; each must move in a smaller orbit, and there must be more regulation. Germany is making faster progress in industry than is any other country. The principal reason is the insistence there on team-play. In Germany there are fewer multimillionaires and more socialists (spelled with either a big or little " S ") than in any other of the leading countries; but Germany wins trade and is steadily improving the conditions of life for her citizens. To some, the change from the freest individualism is welcome; to others it is intensely unacceptable. To this fundamental difference in view-point may be imputed much of the vigor with which the controversy regarding coal-lands has been waged. Granites are classed as igneous rooks; they have been formed by the solidification of rook magmas or Solutions from deep within the earth. It is an almost invariable law of nature that mamas which cool quickly form fine-brained or glassy rocks, while those that cool slowly are completely crystallized and are coarser-grained. Granites, being of the latter class, are regarded as having attained their solid form at considerable depth below the surface under conditions of high temperature and pressure. The constituent minerals crystallized out slowly, the crystals interlocking with one another. The great depth of overlying rocks that must have been present when crystallization took place has been removed by erosion over large areas on the surface of the earth in consequence of which granites appear at or near the surface in many localities.

The Bureau of Mines annually publishes statistical data reflecting technological trends in the minerals industry (metals and nonmetals except fuels). This report outlines recent developments and trends and the technology outlook for mining practices and metallurgical processing based on a review of the minerals industry during the past 2 years. A historical statistical series which indicates trends in the minerals industry has been extended with 1970 data. In addition, data are given from a 5-year Bureau of Mines cyclic canvass of froth flotation plants. Data for 1970 are compared with those of 1960 and 1965.

This report presents a U.S. Bureau of Mines methodology developed to incorporate factors of coal production (mining and cleaning methods, recoveries, economics, etc.) into the definition of recover-ability of a coal resource. Project procedures and computer models that were developed to include mine and preparation plant production rates, recoveries, and costs are explained. The results of these procedures and models are reviewed and compared to the Energy Information Administration estimate of U.S. coal resources-the "demonstrated reserve base." The Matewan 7-1/2-minute quadrangle in eastern Kentucky was selected to demonstrate the methodology.

Dado que los trabajos de procesamiento metalúrgico de la mina Uchucchahua, ocasionaron impactos en el medio ambiente, afectando la calidad del agua y eliminando la vida acuática en las lagunas Añilcocha, Colquicocha y Tinquicocha, se procedió a encontrar una alternativa de tratamiento biológico que recupere la calidad de vida en la mina Uchucchacua. En este sentido, el presente trabajo describe el tratamiento pasivo de los efluentes con manganeso de la mina Uchucchacua. Para dicho procedimiento, se desarrollaron trabajos en dos etapas: el de laboratorio y balde. El primero comprende los sistemas de tratamiento pasivo anaeróbico y aeróbico.El aeróbico se inició sobre la base de los procesos de filtración y aireación a fin de determinar el grado de oxidación y precipitación del manganeso como óxido, mientras que el segundo se realizó en función a los resultados obtenidos en la etapa laboratorio y comprende los siguientes procesos: filtración, autooxidación, aireación, sedimentación. En consecuencia, los procesos anaeróbicos no favorecen la reducción de Mn II en los efluentes estudiados, mientras que los procesos aeróbicos permitieron la disminución del manganeso.

"IntroductionGENERALLY, the necessity for mining coals of higher impurity content, the drive for lower costs by intensive mine mechanization, changing market requirements, and the increasing competition of oil and natural gas, have continued to result in an upward rise in coal preparation, and have necessitated a more intensive study of coal preparation problems.Increasing adoption of •continuous mining equipment, for example, is introducing new problems in coal preparation. Limited experimental work in the United States (1) shows that the effect of the continuous miner on size distribution varies with the characteristics of the seam. In some seams, the fines problem is lessened, in others it is greatly aggravated. Generally there is a decrease in the relative amount of the top sizes (plus 2 in.) and a substantial increase in the intermediate sizes (down to about 1/8 in.). Contrary to expected results•, where continuous miners with vertical-moving cutting heads are used, an increase in impurities in the slack sizes does not necessarily occur where draw-slate is taken. This is because the draw-slate tends to be kicked out in lump form. However, if a seam contains bands •and lenses of impurities they are bound to be in the mined product."

Draglines are massive machines extensively utilized in opencast mines for overburden stripping. The demanding working environment induces fractures, wear and tear, and fatigue failures in dragline components and eventuates in extended maintenance, lengthy downtimes, and loss of production. The bucket is the main source of external loads on the machinery, since interactions with ground materials take place in this region. This study aims to develop a generic finite element model of the stress on an operating bucket. This entails (i) three-dimensional modelling of a dragline bucket, (ii) analytical estimation of resistive forces in the bucket movement, (iii) three-dimensional simulation of the moving bucket using finite element analysis (FEA), and (iv) sensitivity analysis to examine the effect of formation characteristics on stress variation. Simulation results imply that the drag hitch and digging teeth are the elements of the bucket that are most prone to failure. In addition, sensitivity analysis indicates that internal friction angle of the formation is the dominant parameter leading fluctuations in stress values. Changes in stress level are least influenced by formation density.

An investigation into the reliability of the data being collected at the Mount Isa Mines site operated by Glencore in Queensland allowed on-site ventilation personnel to scrutinise pressure and volume measurements collected from the primary surface fans. The investigation effectively identified discrepancies being reported to the on-site remote monitoring system. The difference between the real-time and static measurements on the P63 RAR shaft identified that the in situ differential pressure transducer and piezo annubar system was not operating correctly. This indicated a deficiency of approximately 30 per cent reporting back to the remote monitoring software versus the live readings measured with the Pitot tube bomb and ALNOR AXD610 pressure micro-manometer.Constant monitoring of an operations ventilation network is imperative to ensuring that the underground atmosphere provides a safe and healthy workplace. Further benefits to real-time monitoring allows for the early indication of network failures and promotes increased availability. An innovative approach to out engineer and improve the existing measuring equipment from the 1970s was sought.The use of ultrasonics in the mining industry is not new with ventilation management systems (VMS) equipment available within the marketplace. The introduction and implementation of a reliable product for real-time monitoring was a challenge to overcome due to limited access and suitable measuring points within the mine. The available equipment on the market through mainstream suppliers was not suitable for the unique application required due to the in situ installation of the surface fans. A solution was identified in the oil and gas industry through collaboration and innovative thinking. To provide cooler air to miners working in hot areas of mines, particularly new deep hardrock mines. Approach Air supplied to hot working areas of mines is cooled by passing it through a series of water sprays. How It Works Water nozzles mounted inside a section of ventilation tubing release cooling sprays of water into the air being blown through the tube. The prototype of the water spray cooler consists of six evenly spaced water sprays located inside a 10-ft. long section of 16-inch-diameter fiberglass ventilation tubing. See diagram. This section of rigid tubing is installed into one of the positive pressure ventilation tubing lines that conduct fresh air into working stopes. The intake manifold to the six water sprays is connected to the mine?s cool water line, and the water valve on the manifold is opened. Warm ventilation air being supplied to the stope passes through the water sprays, and is cooled by the lower temperature water.

A theoretical model is described for prediction of the capacity of fines from porous ores, such as cokes and sintered ores, to be removed by a pneumatic, horizontal-type classifier prior to charging into a blast furnace. First, the influence of variation in the apparent density and drag coefficient of porous ores on removal efficiency is analysed from a stochastic standpoint. The effect on efficiency of collisions between particles in the classifying region is then examined analytically in relation to the ratio of the mass flow rates of particles and air (the loading ratio). Finally, a theoretical model is constructed that takes these factors into account. Theoretical and experimental results are compared and classifying efficiency is discussed from both experimental and theoretical viewpoints.

Vertical expansion of existing structures frequently requires foundation retrofitting to enhance the capacity of existing foundations for supporting additional loads. Owing to their small diameter, a variety of suitable drilling methods available for installation, and smaller installation equipment capable of operating under limited headroom conditions, micropiles are often preferred for foundation retrofitting. This paper presents a case history demonstrating application of micropiles to underpin the existing foundation of the Washington D.C. Children?s National Medical Center (CNMC) for its future expansion. Located at 111 Michigan Avenue in northwest Washington, DC, portions of the hospital currently extend five stories above grade and three levels below-grade as parking garages. The hospital intends to expand the surgical wing up to the current build out (five stories) above the remaining portion of the existing parking garage. The original foundations consist of 80-ton Raymond Step-Tapered piles. New loading on the foundations required each Raymond pile to be capable of supporting 150 tons. Results from quick load tests on existing piles indicated that two entire column lines (Column Line A and B) would experience loads beyond their capacity, requiring enhancement of the existing foundation at these locations. The design and construction of the foundation upgrading work was particularly challenging due to various project constraints related to a high groundwater table, micropile installation under limited head room, and ensuring that the parking garage remained fully operational for the entire duration of construction. The paper presents the challenges faced during testing of existing foundations amid a high groundwater table, design developments of underpinning options to support the additional column loads, difficulties and challenges encountered during installation of the micropiles and construction of the micropile pilecaps, and value engineering options developed during various phases of the project. Understanding that micropiles are often a preferred option for foundation retrofitting, the case history is expected to provide a baseline design approach and innovative solutions to typical challenges faced during construction, thereby reducing potential cost overruns during design development and construction of similar future projects.
