Imaging is a fundamental requirement when characterizing minerals, ores and related products. Images are used for presentation, texture analysis, characterization, image analysis, identification, etc. The image mode that is utilized is dependent upon the application, mineral properties and available instruments. Different instruments produce images that display different features; in order of increasing complexity they are: hand specimens, a non-polarizing microscope, polarizing optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), low vacuum SEM, microprobe, secondary ion mass spectrometer, staining, cathodoluminescence, tomography and others. Image analysis uses images produced with either an optical microscope or a SEM, but the SEM images are superior in this application.

The Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) Mine is one of the future underground mines of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI). Located in the remote highlands of Papua, Indonesia, the GBC mine is scheduled to start production in 2017 reaching its peak production capacity of 160 000 t/d in 2023.In order to reach planned production capacity, the GBC mine will utilise an ore handling system consisting of rail haulage, crushing and conveying. The rail haulage system will utilise over 20 km of track while crushing is accomplished by way of three gyratory crushers each with a capacity of 3300 t/h. Nine conveyors operating in two parallel systems, each system over 3 km in length, will move the ore from the crushers to the stockpiles. These systems require a network of larger tunnels and mass excavations to accommodate the planned production facilities.This paper will describe the ore handling system, tunnel and mass excavation methodology as well as some of the challenges encountered with ground conditions and excavation quality during the execution of the project. A combination of lateral and vertical development methodologies and equipment, including drill jumbos, mechanised raise climbers and specialised ground support equipment, have proven successful in the development of a quality ore handling system.CITATION:Pasek, I, Firdausi, H and Chenier, T, 2016. During recent years, the Bureau of Mines has conducted an extensive investigation of the materials for making iron and steel. This work includes iron ore concentration, agglomeration, direct reduction of iron ores and concentrates, the production of pure manganese, chromium, and cobalt by electrolytic processes, the production of ferroalloys from low-grade domestic ores, and the development of special alloys to utilize these products. As a part of this general program, a Congressional appropriation allowed the con¬struction of an electric-furnace, semicommercial, ingot-producing plant at Shasta Dam near Redding, Calif. The primary objectives of the pilot plant were to determine the costs and operating problems involved in the production of steel and ferrous alloys in which sponge iron was used as melting stock, and to determine the physical properties of the materials produced. The pilot-plant equipment and the results of sponge iron-melting tests in the basic lined, electric arc furnace have been reported in previous publications.3/4/

It discusses the practical aspects of mineral physics and outlines the theo¬retical viewpoint underlying the investigations reported herein.Explosive Shattering as a Possible Economical Method of Ore Presentation By John Gross and C. E. Wood. - It is shown that explosion shattering by impact is favored by large charges and by low ratio of water to charge. For 400-gram charges of dolomite crushed through 48 mesh the steam costs are less than 5 cents per ton of dolomite obtained. This is within the range of present steam costs for ball-milling dolomite.Electrical Properties of Minersl Aggergates I. Natural and Artificial Aggregates Crystallized Lead Sulphide By R.S. Dean and John Koster - This paper deals with the electrical properties of natural and synthetic galena. It is shown that massive crystalline galena has a normal positive temperature coefficient of resistance, whereas fine-grained steel galena has a negative temperature coefficient, the curve R v. T being exponential in form. That steel galena behaves somewhat like a leaky condenser is indicated by ballistic and alternating-current bridge measurements. In determining the cause of the erratic results of alternating-current resistance measurements it was observed that the measured re¬sistance was a function of the current through the specimen. The direct-current resistance was found to be proportional to the square of a superimposed radio-frequency current and independent of the frequency.The influence of grain size or the amount of metallic interface on the voltage-current characteristics at various temperatures on synthetic galena pastilles was studied. It is proved that the volts v. amperes curves are linear for all sizes and temperatures, that they have an intercept which is apparently a linear function of the temperature, and that their slopes are exponential functions of the temperature and give rise to a negative temperature coefficient of resistance.Apparatus for determing the Magnetic Constants of Mineral Powders by V,H, Gottschalk,and C. W. Davis.- A modified isthmus permeameter having a spark-suppressed primary and a multiplier in the secondary circuit to regulate the effect of capsules functioning as a twin isthmus is used to obtain quantitative data and normal induction and hystersis curves from small amounts of powdered material at fields surpassing 3.000 oersteds. Data and curves are given to demonstrate the calibration of the apparatus and the reproducibility of its results. Applications and limitations of the apparatus are noted.Magnetization Curves for Magnetite Poeders by V. H. Gottschalk and F. S. Wartman.- This paper gives measurements on four lots of purified and analyzed magnetites in mixed fractions with especial reference to the variation of permeability with grain size and with dilution by an inert material."

The world mineral industry has over the years experienced growth in the production of nickel (Ni) due to its use not only in the catalytic industry but mainly also to its demand in the stainless steel production industry. Hence there is a need to produce more pure and marketable grades of Ni through the use of efficient purification routes such as solvent extraction. The V10-LIX®84-IC system resulted in nickel (Ni) extraction isotherm shifting to lower pH levels. The pH window of opportunity for the extraction of Ni subsequently increased in solution containing magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) even though the system also resulted in slight shifts to less positive pH values for Mg and Ca curves. Results showed a synergistic effect of LIX®84-IC when added to V10 for all elements, Ni, Mg and Ca. The pH50 values for elements Ni, Mg and Ca in the V10-LIX®84-IC system were 2.95, 8.10 and 7.70 respectively. Comparing results obtained when using V10 alone produced ?pH50 for Ni, Mg and Ca being 3.35, 0.15 and 0.70 respectively, which was a confirmation of the synergistic shifts for all the elements. The ?pH50 (Mg-Ni)value was 1.95 with no synergism and 5.15 with synergism and that for ?pH50 (Ca-Ni)was 2.10 with no synergism and 4.75 with synergism. This showed that the Ni-Mg separation factor was relatively larger than the Ni-Ca. Improved loading and stripping kinetics were also observed. The current limit to power transmission for grinding mills through one mill pinion is approximately 7,500kW. Above this power rating either twin pinion arrangements or Gearless drives are required. The SMTP concept was developed to overcome this limitation by using two pinions with a single large drive motor. The SMTP mill drive offers major advantages in capital cost and greatly simplifies plant layouts, while using an innovative adaptation of industry-proven single helical gearing. Through the use of a single motor, provision of variable speed drive is greatly simplified. The SMTP can also be used for significant power upgrades on existing mills.

The principle activities of the Explosives Research Laboratory from July 1, 1961 to June 30, 1962, are described briefly in part 1. Part 2 gives short abstracts of publications that appeared during fiscal year 1962; in general, the research reported in these publications antedates the report period. Part 3 gives the results of an investigation which, although too limited to warrant separate publication, merits presentation in some detail because of current interest in ammonium nitrate-fuel oil compositions.

During the last decade, many exhaustive studies have been made of process energy requirements for the production of various metals and materials. Some excellent technical papers and text books have resulted, and some of these are included in the bibliography of this paper. These studies were, of course, prompted by the economic pressures which resulted from the beginning of the "Energy Crisis" in 1973. Our intensified consciousness of the cost of energy led, then, to a greatly improved understanding of the energy consumption attributable to individual mining, processing, and refining steps. It is worth noting, however, that an awareness of the cost of energy is not new and that efforts to minimize this cost were an important part of sound mine and plant management practice throughout the earlier days of our industry. One only has to read a few accounts of mining operations around the beginning of this century to develop an appreciation for the cost of supplying wood, coal, fuel oil, or electric power to remote locations.

The Raymond Memorial Volume, which the Members of the In-stitute have been so anxiously awaiting since the beloved man's death, is nearly ready for publication. It will contain about 45,000 words and some illustrations and a frontispiece portrait. This book promises to fill every expectation of the contributors to the volume and the host of admirers of the genius who so long guided the destiny of the Institute. It will contain one of Doctor Raymond's best stories, entitled "James and Jim;" his famous article on "Job on Mining;" and one of his poems entitled "The Grand Canyon." A biography of Doctor Raymond has been written by his daughter, who is the wife of a member of the Institute. The memorial addresses delivered by Dr. Henry F. Drinker and T. A. Rickard at the annual meeting in New York in 1919 will be included. There will also be very interesting reminiscences by H. M. Howe, A. S. Dwight, C. W. Goodale, R. W. Hunt, Lyman Abbott, J. F. hemp, T. A. Rickard. The volume has been edited by T. A. Rickard, which promises all that can be wished for the volume from a literary standpoint. The edition will he limited so that it is very desirable that orders for this volume be sent in to the Institute as promptly as possible. The price will be $5.00.

"This paper reviews flowsheets generally used in gold rooms to upgrade primary gravity concentrates particularly those of Knelsons. It is concluded that even for small operations, which treat between 250 and lo00 kg of concentrates per day, there is a strong economic incentive to include in the flowsheet magnetic removal of tramp iron, at least two shaking tables, screening of either table feed or table tails at 150-212 um, and scavenging of table tails with a small centrifuge. Headroom, rather than floor space, is often inadequate in most gold room designs, and limits gravity flow and flowsheet flexibility. Experimental data are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of a small Knelson Concentrator to scavenge significant amounts of gold (up to 91 %) from fine table tails.RésuméCet article examine les schémas d’évolution généralement utilisés pour traiter les concentres gravimétriques d‘or, en particulier ceux produits par concentrateur Knelson. The borate industry is one of the few sectors of the mining and mineral-processing industry which the United States still dominates. Since about 1927, the United States has supplied over half of the world's total boron and borate raw materials, and many of the chemical derivatives as well. Chiefly responsible for this record are companies producing sodium borates from two large deposits in southern California, at Boron (Kramer) and Searles Lake. The sodium borates, or products derived from borax and borax-containing brines, are the preferred borates for industry because they are soluble in water and combine readily with most other chemicals. Calcium borates (or sodium-free compounds) are required for certain end uses, but in general, nonsodium borates are used only where borax is not avail- able. During the past hundred years, the use of boron compounds throughout the world has risen from a few tons per year to the equivalent of about a million tons of B2O3. Leadership in supplying borates has shifted from country to country and from region to region during this period, generally as the result of the development of newly discovered deposits that were better in quality, more accessible, or more economically exploitable than previous sources (Table 1). Primary Products and End Uses The principal borate products offered by primary producers in the United States are listed in Table 2. In general, these products are utilized worldwide by almost all consumers, regardless of the original source of the primary borates. In the United States, the primary borates all originate in southern California. Colemanite is produced as crude or processed crude ore from the Death Valley area and is utilized by the fiber glass and ceramic industries without further treatment. Production from Searles Lake, Calif., is from brines that are processed in chemical plants where borax and other compounds are recovered and the principal borate products are produced. At Boron, Calif., the world's leading producer is mining a deposit of mineral borax and operating a chemical refinery. The mineral borax is mined together with included clay, and refined borax or "lo-mol" is one of the refinery products. The mineral and the chemical compound are identical, Na2B4O7- lOH2O. In addition to ship- ping all major refined borate products from Boron, the company ships semiprocessed ore concentrates to treatment plants elsewhere.

"Recent project failures have called into question the use and relevance of benchmarking and independent reviews, forcing a rethink of traditional processes and procedures.With cost estimates and schedules dramatically varying from lows seen around the global financial crisis to peaks experienced in the recent mining boom, benchmarking has ranged between essential and misleading.Profound shifts are now underway in future project delivery strategies as the market moves away from cost-plus engineering, procurement and construction management. The current trends in project implementation are to utilise more lump-sum design and construct or fixed-price supply and construct contracts. This trend will remove transparency in detailed cost information by reducing the sources and clarity of cost data.Independent peer reviews (IPRs) of studies and investment recommendations performed over the last decade have both failed to prevent flawed or deficient projects from proceeding to approval and funding, and been successful in ensuring that owners did not proceed with doomed investments.In recent times, it has been recognised by some owners, contractors and engineers that traditional benchmarking checks or IPRs, or a combination of both, will not necessarily produce reliable assessments of study conclusions and of the forecasts of project outcomes. To be of value, the benchmarking process now also needs to recognise the highly volatile responses from the engineering and construction industry to the current and future markets for their services.Similarly, reviewers who draw upon benchmarks of past project experiences on an understanding of the things that shaped and influenced their outcomes need to be more aware of how a future dynamic market may impact the outcome of the projects and raise warning flags accordingly.With the commodity cycle currently approaching what is hoped is its bottom, ensuring that benchmarking and independent reviews evolve into reliable, transparent and worthwhile processes becomes even more important. South32 (S32), a globally diversified mining and metals company, is listed on securities exchanges around the world (ASX, JSE, LSE), with its primary listing being on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). Chapter 5 of the ASX Listing Rules (Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), 2019b) requires a mining entity to provide a summary of governance arrangements and internal controls with respect to its estimation processes, estimates and reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves annually. As a global company, it is also important to design and implement all governance processes and internal controls which can be used consistently across the organisation. The three lines model (previously known as the ‘three lines of defense’ model) is employed across South32 to manage risk where the first line (Practitioners) designs, implements and executes processes and controls to manage risk; the second line (Stewardship) identifies material gaps and improvement opportunities in the first line by monitoring conformance with the group requirements, legislative and regulatory obligations. Second line also assists with the development and improvement of core fundamentals based on industry good practise. The third line (Group Assurance) provides independent and objective assurance over the Group’s system of risk management and control. The estimation of resources and reserves for most of the operations within South32 is managed by the Planning function. The estimation process is part of the annual Life of Operation Plan (LoOP). The LoOP identifies and assesses the strategic alternatives for the development of an operation and recommends the preferred pathway based on value and risk. The LoOP starts with opportunity framing and the updated resources as an input and ends with the short-term plan and annual budget (the outputs). Ore Reserves estimates are one of the outputs from the LoOP. All the inputs and outputs follow internal standards and procedures which includes peer review and performance reconciliation. Stewardship (Second line) which is a centralised function has standards in place to ensure compliance to internal controls and external regulatory requirements. This includes assessment of the competence of Competent Persons, technical reviews, independent audits and training in the relevant chapters of the ASX Listing Rules, Guidance Notes and Appendices. Group Assurance (Third line) which reports to the Risk and Audit Committee of the Board of Directors ensures the design and operating effectiveness of the processes, standards and procedures associated with the estimation and reporting of resources and reserves. While the level of scrutiny has a different intent for each line in the three lines model, the overall purpose is to achieve a consistent outcome across the organisation

"The handling and transportation of explosives and explosives supplies are inherently hazardous owing to their sensitiveness to impact and flame or electric arcs and sparks. Many accidents have occurred in the past during transportation of explosives, especially when they were carried by individual miners on man-trips. When electric haulage became the usual mode of transportation and shots were fired electrically, the hazards of carrying explosives and supplies on man-trips were fully realized, and in some mines all explosives were placed in one car, usually at the rear of the trip. Far-sighted managers saw the danger of this practice and provided separate trips for delivering explosives. This step was a definite advance in safety, but the latest achievement is the construction of special, rugged, nonconducting cars.Many coal-mining men have shown considerable interest in the construction of safe cars for explosives during recent months. Undoubtedly many others are interested in this phase of safety, therefore this circular is issued to give information on cars of this type now in use.Car A (fig. 1) is essentially a closed inner box separated from an outer box by an insulating lining of rubber. The double box is attached to a standard steel chassis that has spring journals and electric welding instead of certain rivets. The chassis is equipped with roller bearings. The over-all length from pin to pin is 11 feet, 9 inches; the wheel base is 54 inches, the track gage 42 inches, and the capacity eighteen 50-pound cases of permissible explosives. The box is 10 feet long, 6 feet wide, 3 feet high at the top of the arched roof, and 2 feet 9 inches at the edges. The top of the car is 46 inches above the top of the rail.The inner box is insulated from the outer box by two pieces of 1/4-inch switchboard.-insulating matting cemented together. To cover the top, two ends, two sides, and the bottom of the box requires 320 square feet of the l/4- inch matting.The walls are well-seasoned tongue-and-groove oak, 1 1/4 inches thick and 2 3/4 inches wide. A 1 1/4-inch air space is maintained by oak strips between the outer wall and the two thicknesses of 1/4-inch rubber matting. The inner box is made of 7/8-inch, well-seasoned, tongue-and groove oak fitted closely against the insulating matting. No nail, rivet, or bolt extends through the rubber insulation.The floor of the outer box is secured to the chassis by two sets of bolts through an intermediate piece of well-seasoned oak. One set of bolts is countersunk from the top of the intermediate piece of oak, and the other set is countersunk from the bottom. The countersunk portions are filled with ""insulate,"" an insulating compound. Adjacent bolts are at least 6 inches apart.The bed of the inner box is divided into six compartments by transverse strips of wood at the bottom and partitions near the roof. Each compartment accommodates three 50-pound cases of explosives. This arrangement prevents cases in adjacent compartments from touching, so that there is no possibility of end thrust of the entire load of explosives. Each inner compartment is 21 inches high, 5g inches long, and 16 1/4 inches wide. Separating strips at the floor are 3 inches wide and 1 1/4 inches thick. The outside dimensions of the 50-pound cases of explosives used are 17 1/2 inches long, 13 1/2 inches wide, and 12 1/2 inches high."

The discovery of the Nyidinghu Iron Ore Deposit totalling 2.46 Bt of resource continues FortescueÆs highly successful exploration record of discovering multi-billion tonne deposits under cover with little to no surface expression. Since inception in 2003 Fortescue have discovered and delineated the Christmas Creek and Cloudbreak deposits in the Chichester Range totalling 3.38 Bt and 3.25 Bt in the Solomon region. Together with other deposits Fortescues resource portfolio now approximates 10 Bt of hematite - goethite mineralisation.The Nyidinghu deposit is situated on the southern margin of the Fortescue Valley, 35 km south of FortescueÆs Cloudbreak mining operations on the north margin of the valley. Nyidinghu comprises approximately 70 per cent BID martite - goethite mineralisation hosted by the Brockman Iron Formation and 30 per cent CID beneath alluvial outwash of the Weeli Wolli Creek in to the Fortescue Valley. Minor DID mineralisation occurs at the deposit margins.BID mineralisation is strongly controlled by the pre-existing NE/SW trending Weeli Wolli Fault system and bounded to the north by the Poonda Fault. Both fault systems are interpreted to have had a long and complex history commencing pre Ophthalmian Orogeny (ca 2.2 Ga) and remaining intermittently active through the Proterozoic.CID at Nyidinghu is the downstream continuation of the combined Weeli Wolli/Marillana CID palaeochannel system being mined by Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton at Yandicoogina and Yandi, respectively.Exploration commenced in August 2010 with the inaugural resource announcement of 1 Bt being made just six months later. To date over 1700 RC and 85 diamond core holes have been drilled forming the basis for the resource of 2.46 Bt and ongoing feasibility studies. Bedrock gold mineralisation has been located in association with an extensive float train 25 km west of known alluvial gold. It is in the form of open, matrix-supported breccias comprising pyritic quartz/sericite clasts in a vuggy, cherty chalcedonic and crystalline quartz matrix. Fluid inclusions in pyritic clasts indicate trapping temperatures for gold mineralising hydrothermal fluid of 170-240 degrees C. This mineralisation could represent the upper part of a feeder zone to an exhalative hydrothermal system. It is possible that other high-level feeder zones could be preserved elsewhere in the area. Deep weathering of such a system could provide a source for the alluvial gold localities near Helmsdale. It is suggested that east and central Sutherland presents good prospects for exhalative epithermal gold mineralisation and the associated feeder zones

A passive acoustic emission (AE) monitoring system has been developed and trialled on two M10000 IsaMillsTM. The analyser detects AE stress waves generated by grinding media impacts with the mill liner during mill operation. Locally propagating stress waves can be detected on the exterior liner surface using strategically mounted broadband accelerometers.The analyser has been developed into a robust commercial prototype system, and has been designed, installed and commissioned with Xstrata Technology at two mineral processing plants.A six-month field trial showed large-scale variation in AE power signature with process conditions. Analysis of the enveloped AE power output demonstrated a strong correlation with mill process conditions – more specifically grinding media relative loading, feed pulp density, feed volumetric flow rate and feed type.Placement of accelerometers along the length of the mill body provided key information on the grinding media relative deportment. As the techniques and resolution for 3-D spatial analysis have advanced in the last decade, it is now possible to map in detail the microstructure of multiphase materials in three-dimensional digital space. In this regard, three-dimensional x-ray microtomography offers a unique imaging capability. Spatial resolution on the order of ten microns can be achieved with the use of microfocus x-ray generators. Recently, a state-of-the-art cone beam x-ray microtomography system has been installed at the University of Utah for the quantitative analysis of multiphase materials in three dimensions. This facility has been designed to obtain 2048 x 2048 pixel reconstruction over a 10-mm diameter, while also allowing for the imaging of somewhat larger (40-mm) objects. The system is capable of handling high-density materials, even materials having a density as high as 8.0 g/cm3. This unique, one-of-a-kind, instrument will be used to obtain three-dimensional spatial reconstruction for such applications as specific examples 3D liberation analysis, pore structure analysis of particle beds during filtration and air-void system of concrete structures. The utilization of x-ray microtomography not only will allow for quantitative analysis of multiphase systems but also allow for textural characterization and the determination of phase continuity. In this paper, we present information regarding the current use of this new facility and reviewed potential applications for the advanced analytical system.

The chromite deposits along the Stillwater complex in Stillwater and Sweetgrass Counties, Mont., have at various times been studied and reported on by the Federal Geological Survey, the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, other Government agencies, and private interests, Several of the deposits were explored to a mall extent by the owners during the World War of 1914-17, but no production resulted. The importance of these deposits and the urgent necessity of developing large domestic sources of chromite were realized shortly before the beginning of the recent World War. These deposits were therefore investigated and developed by Government agencies and., as a result, now afford the largest known reserves of chromium in the United States. In 1939, under the authority of the Strategic Minerals Act, the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey made preliminary investigations of these deposits. As a result, the Bureau of Mines conducted an extensive program of trenching, diamond core drilling, and sampling. This work was begun in August 1939 and continued to April 1943. The Bureau of Mines also performed numerous metallurgical tests on the beneficiation of the chromite ores and concentrates and for the production of chromium metal there from. Research continues as a means toward utilizing these ores.
