The mechanics of load transfer in bord-and-pillar mining is not well understood despite the evolution of the art of pillar extraction over the last 20 years via trial and error (empirical) or Rock Mass Rating (RMR), simple monitoring and pillar extraction experiences at neighboring mines. Variations in geologic conditions and pillar extraction methods, along with a lack of comprehensive instrumentation programs for monitoring ground behavior during pillar recovery, are among the factors that make it difficult to predict how strata will respond to pillar extraction. Efficient and safe use of roof supports depends on the interaction between the designed support and coal strata. Of particular interest in this study is the mechanics of strata deformation as influenced by geologic conditions, pillar extraction methods and optimum support with load-bearing capabilities in strata control during mass exploitation of underground coal deposits required detailed investigation,?. To provide a better understanding of the mechanics of strata deformation, as researchers, we have collected data and reviewed measurements of convergence and stress in one mine of South Eastern Coalfields Limited (S.E.C.L.), i. e., in North Chirimiri Pondary Hills (NCPH) and have completed numerical modeling with FLAC software for (Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua modeling, Itasca India Consulting Pvt. Ltd.) for two typical pillar extraction plans. Stress distribution in the mine roof above pairs of roof supports was calculated to demonstrate how Resin roof bolt support installed support contributed to roof block movement control. It was shown that overall stress and roof-floor convergence patterns were most influenced by the stiffness of coal measure rocks and by pillar extraction sequences and layouts. Also, resin roof bolts and other support systems play a critical role in controlling stability of both the immediate roof and the main roof for a distance of up to 18 meters (i.e., working coal seam height X three times) above the seam. Installed supports provide unique strata control advantages over other types of secondary support by significantly reducing the time between mining and installation of the secondary support. Although resin roof bolts are similar to posts in stiffness and capacity, they are more effective than posts under static loads because they can yield and still maintain loads at nearpeak capacity(Singh, et al., 2006), whereas posts fail and lose their ability to limit mine roof deformation.

This report describes dredging and processing of sand and gravel from a glacial-fluvial deposit in the Raccoon River valley near West Des Moines, Iowa. Preliminary cleaning and separation of the sand and gravel at the dredge site with subsequent transportation to separate plants and the production and disposal of the various grades of aggregate material are also described. The geology of the deposit is summarized. A tabulated summary of costs in units of labor, power, and supplies is included.

INSTRUMENTATION in the process industries can no longer be regarded as a convenience, but rather an absolute necessity. Although many chemical processes must already be conducted with instruments, every properly designed application of automatic process control will improve operation: 1) the product will be more uniform and of higher quality; 2) the manual labor saved will reduce cost; 3) uniformity of flow and uniform control of process will increase production; and 4) surges will be eliminated, making it possible to operate equipment near ultimate capacity at all times. Industrial instruments fall into two general classifications—those that measure and those that measure and control. The cement industry has been using instruments for a number of years, particularly in the burning process, primarily for indicatlng and recording. Automatic process control makes additional use of these instruments, and others, to control variables. Assisted by the instrument manufacturers, engineers at Ideal Cement Co. achieved considerable progress in determining how well the usual recording instruments could be made to control various phases of cement-making. The results of these experiments were used to make the new plant at Houston as wholly automatic as possible. The original Houston plant, built in 1937 by Gulf Portland Cement Co., consisted of only one 8 x 220-ft kiln and the necessary grinding mills and accessory equipment and had a capacity of 900 bbl per day (300,000 bbl annually). Ideal Cement Co. purchased this plant in 1940 and almost immediately started plans to increase its production. In 1941 a 9 x 220-ft kiln was installed and grinding and storage capacity were increased. The growing demand for cement in the Houston area necessitated a third kiln (9 ft 6 in. x 250 ft) in 1947. This brought the plant up to its present capacity of about 1.3 million bbl per year. Calcium silicates in cement are produced in a burning operation at high temperatures from raw mix of argillaceous and calcareous materials that have been crushed, mixed, and ground to a fine powder. The composition of this mixture must be kept consistent within narrow limits. Raw mixing and grinding may be done either wet or dry, but in both instances the materials must be correctly proportioned, finely ground, and thoroughly intermixed before entering the kiln. In the pelletizing plant of Hoogovens, Estel BV, a varying mixture of hematites and magnetites is used for the production of acid and (occasionally) fluxed pellets. Optimum results regarding productivity, quality and process control are obtained with mixtures containing 30-40 % magnetites. A decrease of the magnetite ratio or an increase of the basicity has a great influence on both productivity and heat and power consumption. Tests have been carried out to find the extent to which magnetite can be replaced by b.f. dust, mill-scale and coke breeze. Pilot plant tests show that about 80-100 % of the production loss due to a decrease in magnetite content or to the increase in basicity can be regained without damage to the quality by adding coke breeze. The amount of coke breeze should be limited tot 1,5 %; if this percen¬tage is chosen higher, the quality of the pellets deteriorates rapidly. The amount of coke breeze to be added should be about 30 % above the theoretical value, based on heat balance considerations. The results achieved by incorporating b.f. dust and mill-scale into the pelletmix were also encouraging, but as some types of mill-scale are very difficult to grind and the supply of b.f. dust is limited, the research has not been carried out extensively in this field. The pilot plant tests on replacement of magnetite by coke breeze have been followed by industrial tests, during which the breeze was added to the ore feed before the dry-grinding system.

The Bureau of Mines is authorized to send questionnaires to the nonmetal mining industry each year requesting their voluntary submission of injury experience and employment data. The voluntary response to these requests has contributed greatly toward the promotion of safety in the industry, and every effort has been made to make the information as complete as possible.

Detailed landform designs were completed for six (integrated) iron ore waste rock dumps at a Western Australian iron ore mine site to meet closure objectives and to optimise material movements for closure. The designs were based on specific physical and geochemical properties of waste material and the design was undertaken to enhance long-term stability of the dumps and optimise material movements, and therefore minimise closure cost. Construction of the re-shaped waste rock dumps have been completed. Following construction, surface material characteristics were found to deviate from those used in the design assessment. Materials present at surface following re-shaping were generally finer textured than those sampled for modelling. It is anticipated that the embankment slopes may experience increased rates of surface erosion compared to the rates predicted from modelling and used in design. The finer textured material is thought to be generated from exposing finer material that has migrated into the coarser matrix over time or that was not present in the sampled top surface of the landforms. This is due to armouring processes over time and this phenomenon is likely to recur following further wet seasons. The majority of the waste materials present in the waste rock dumps were subgrade banded iron formations (BIF) and chert, which are generally competent and geochemically inert. Some waste material was known to have an elevated risk of erosion but present in relatively small quantities. The presence of a large number of dolerite dyke swarms indicates appreciable volumes of dolerite were produced as waste from the pits. This material has an elevated risk of being highly erodible/dispersive. Clays and shales are also likely to be present in the dumps and are considered to be less competent material (relative to the BIF/chert). Ilmenite-bearing paleo-beach deposits were discovered in Jylland, Denmark using a combination of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), portable X-ray fluorescence (XMET), bulk XRF analyses, Computer Controlled Scanning Electron Microscopy (CCSEM), and wire line logging. The Miocene-age paleo-beach deposits are located below a thin Quaternary cover in a region of very moderate relief and essentially no outcrop demanding unique approaches in exploration. Initially, an isopach map of the Quaternary is prepared from existing water well data. A geological model for likely occurrence of Miocene paleo-beach deposits is generated and the coincidence of thin Quaternary cover and potential paleo-beach deposits define targets for detailed exploration. The defined targets are traversed with GPR to identify paleo-beach structures which are then used to define a drilling program. This methodology located a paleo-barrier island at the Vorslunde location with more than 10% ilmenite in the sand. During the drilling process, the TiO2 and heavy mineral contents of the sand were logged every meter with a portable XRF unit (XMET) and subsequently calibrated more accurately by comparison to bulk XRF and CCSEM analyses for selected samples. The bulk XRF data also provided more complete compositional information. Insitu determination of geology, heavy mineral abundance, and corroboration of the XRF logging was done using wire line logs, a combination of spectral gamma and induction conductivity logs. Detailed characteristics (abundance, grain size, shape) and chemical composition of minerals was determined by the GEUS CCSEM methodology (Frei et al, this vol.). The average weight percent TiO2 for all Ti-minerals is 62%, 60% excluding rutile. That elevated TiO2 content (>> ilmenite stoichiometric value, ca. 50 %) indicates that ilmenite experienced an iron-leaching environment. The source of the sand deposit was investigated by dating contained zircon. The results show that the likely sources of zircon are in southern Norway and southwestern Sweden with common zircon ages of ca 1100 Ma. and 1500 Ma.

The wetting behavior of liquid polymers at solid surfaces and the adhesion forces involved at polymer-filler interfaces should always be considered in the fabrication of high quality polymer composites, including those made with mineral fillers. Spontaneous polymer spreading over the filler surface is a basic condition in the fabrication of the polymer-mineral composites. In this regard, the wetting and adhesion characteristics of polymer-mineral systems are reviewed in this contribution. It appears that several aspects of wetting phenomena at mineral filler surfaces are not well described in the literature and require further systematic study. Specifically, it is clear from this review that efforts should be made to determine the effects of mineral surface contamination (including surface hydration) on wetting and adhesion phenomena, and to determine the wetting characteristics of molten polymers at mineral filler surfaces. It is expected that any improved fundamental understanding of wetting and adhesion phenomena for the polymer-mineral composites will provide the basis for further technological development.

Através da automatização destas liberações e das suspensões, espera-se aumentar a disponibilidade de estoque diária para programação de chances de laminação e evitar intervenções manuais de maneira padronizada. Este modelo será utilizado nas etapas de criação de placa e aproveitamento de placas no pedido. Além disso, o modelo será rodado automaticamente todos os dias visando avaliar todo o estoque.

The Wyoming Mineral-Conoco Crownpoint Project represents the first time that big hole drilling has been exclusively used to develop totally a privately financed mine below a depth of 1000 feet. Three shafts, one ten feet in diameter and two six feet in diameter, were successfully drilled to depths of 2243', 2188' and 2188' respectively and cased with hydrostatic designed steel casing. The largest shaft is to be used to handle muck and water from station excavation and enlargement of the other two shafts. A reverse circulation system with potassium chloride base mud was used for drilling. The mud was cleaned by settling in steel lined tanks with assistance by cyclone type separators. Deviation was monitored by gyroscopic surveying at 30 foot intervals and did not exceed 16 inches off plumb. Casing was designed to withstand hydrostatic pressures with a 1.5 safety factor to the large shaft and 1.25 safety factor for the smaller shafts. All casing welds were x-ray tested prior to lowering the casing in the hole. Cementing the annular space completed the operation. The total time to mobilize, drill and move off the three shafts was 363 days. The drilling operation was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.

At the Red Dome and Mungana deposits in north Queensland, Australia, it is proposed that mineralisation and alteration developed as a 'telescoped' overprinting continuum, ranging in style from hypothermal to epithermal, reflecting the major changes that developed in the regional setting over the period circa 325 - 290 Ma. Regional assessment suggests that this also applies to many other precious and base metal deposits within a 40 km length of the host Siluro-Devonian Chillagoe Formation.   A ten stage paragenetic sequence of structural preparation, multi phase intrusion and associated mineralisation, alteration and brecciation is postulated for the Chillagoe district.

The challenge facing the engineering provider is to calculate throughput rates when faced with disparate specific energies calculated by different testing methodologies. Typically, an ownerÆs team would expect that the throughput calculations be checked using more than one method, therefore it is inevitable that there will be differences, based on which methodology is used. This engineering challenge is exacerbated by the continuing evolution of contemporary circuit configurations such as two stage pebble crushing with or without high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) as the second stage, or second stage pebble crusher product reporting to the ball milling circuit, etc.This paper is a companion to the paper first presented at SAG 2011, which showed that the Bond Indices are an excellent tool for estimating the specific energy requirements for semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills in single-stage SAG milling (SSS) circuits, SAG and ball mill circuits (SAB) or SAG and ball mill circuits with pebble crushers (SABC). This paper presents how the Bond Indices have been used to calculate ball mill specific energies, and therefore throughput rates, for SAG mill based circuits. Once the ball milling specific energy is known, tower mill and vertimill energy requirements can also be calculated. The acoustic signals emitted from a laboratory-scale ball mill were used for the estimation of the comminution of two complex sulphide ores, viz. Merensky and UG2 ores from the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa. The digital acoustic signals were transformed to power spectral densities that could be related to particle size distributions (-75 µm to 4000 µm) in the mill by use of continuum regression. This approach is more general than principal component regression methods or Kalman filtering used previously and resulted in significantly more accurate calibration in the case of the Merensky ore, where approximately 93.4% of the variance in the particle size distributions could be explained. With fewer data available, the variance in the particle size distributions in the UG2ore could be explained less accurately (82.4%), but still satisfactorily. In addition, smaller particle sizes (less than 300 µm) could be modelled more accurately in the case of the UG2 ore.

The Corefco ammonia leach nickel refinery treats Ni-Co mixed sulphides from the high-pressure acid leaching of Moa Bay nickel laterite. Due to the low iron content of the feed, the ammonia leach process generates a leach residue with ~10% Ni+Co. Since commissioning a leach residue pressure filtration circuit in 2002, this residue has been stockpiled, dried, and sold commercially. For several years, the residue was sold to nickel smelters overseas. In 2014, re-processing of the residue in the high-pressure acid leach was tested. Lab test work was completed showing excellent extraction of the contained nickel and cobalt, and additional beneficial effects in the high-pressure acid leach circuit. A plant test in Moa confirmed the results, and preparation for shipment of the valuable leach residue for re-processing has begun. This paper outlines the test work and results, and some commercial considerations.

Use of vehicles with electric drive, which could reduce our oil dependence, will depend on lithium-ion batteries. But is there enough lithium? Will we need to import it from a new cartel? Are there other materials with supply constraints? We project the maximum demand for lithium and other materials if electric-drive vehicles expanded their market share rapidly, estimating material demand per vehicle for four battery chemistries. Total demand for the United States is based on market shares from an Argonne scenario that reflects high demand for electric-drive vehicles, and total demand for the rest of the world is based on a similar International Energy Agency scenario. Total material demand is then compared to estimates of production and reserves, and the quantity that could be recovered by recycling, to evaluate the adequacy of supply. We also identify producing countries to examine potential dependencies on unstable regions or future cartels.

The paper presents previously unpublished results derived from an unique interaction moitoring program conducted in the Sydney Coalfield of Nova Scotia. An abandoned, sealed longwall gateroad was re-entered and instrumented prior to extracting a longwall face 140 m below it. Instrumentation included piezometers connected to a constant head tank to monitor subsidence, and horizontally mounted extensometers to measure strains associated with subsidence. Survey levelling data was also collected. The monitoring results have allowed a number of significant conclusions to be drawn, all of which were either unanticipated or contradict current mainstream thinking. Firstly, interaction subsidence was less than anticipated. Secondly, the effects of rate of face advance on the development of the subsidence profile are evident. Thirdly, compressive strains are shown to remain in the subsided strata. Finally, strata response to undermining was almost immediate. The impact of these findings on the extraction of longwall panels beneath flooded workings in the Sydney Coalfield are discussed.

The construction and modification of tunnels brings a requirement for precise measurement of convergence and divergence to safeguard the structure, maintain safety and provide the assurance needed to maintain efficient progress. Established methods include manual measurement using tape extensometers and automated methods using photogrammetry and automated total stations. Drawbacks include the need for frequent access, power supply, cabling, and cost. The paper describes how the development of reliable optical displacement sensors (ODS) has changed the landscape. ODS sensors are connected to a long-range wireless mesh communications network via a solar-powered gateway outside the tunnel, with data instantly transmitted to the internet. A sensor and its reflector target can be installed in 20 minutes and is maintenance free for a decade. Tunnel movement is measured to sub-millimeter precision with repeatability of ±0.15 mm. Integration of a triaxial tilt sensor allows slope distance to be converted to horizontal and vertical changes and allows rotational movement to be determined. Applications include new-build and long-term structural health monitoring. Case studies will be given, including the refurbishment of rail tunnels in Spain where the ODS measured movement during track lowering in a situation where no other automated system was considered viable.
