The study area, which comprises 28,443 acres within the Jacumba Wilderness Study Area, is in the California Desert Conservation Area, and along the U.S.-Mexico border 25 miles west of Fl Centro, CA. The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluation of mineral resources is based on examination of mining claims, known mineral occurrences, and mineralized zones during the fall of 1983. Limestone resources were identified inside the study area; tungsten resources may he present. Metasedimentary rocks intruded by Cretaceous Quartz diorite predominate in the study area. Tungsten and some gold have been found in skarn zones along intrusive contacts; limestone deposits are in the pre-Cretaceous rocks. Tertiary and Quaternary volcanic flows, pyroclastic rocks, clay beds, and diatomite in lake deposits nave been investigated for possible non-metallic resources. Evidence of mining or prospecting was found at 26 sites in or just outside the study area. In 1983, 106 claims were held in 13 claim groups. One claimant was sporadically prospecting for gold on claims in the north part of the study area in 1983, and gravel was being mined from alluvium 1/4 mile to the east.

Iran's petroleum industry is nearly 50 years old and the oldest in the Near East. According to published figures, Iran ranks third in production and reserves in the Near East. These reserves (including probable reserves) are estimated at 35 billion barrels and constitute about 11 percent of the world's total. Iran is the sixth largest producer of crude petroleum in the world. The 1961 output of more than 430 million barrels was 5 percent of total world output for the year. In the same year, Iran ranked fourth among world petroleum exporters, providing 8.4 percent of total world exports.

Schalker Eisenhütte und Maschinenfabrik GmbH, Nordic Minesteel Technologies and Bombardier Transportation have developed an evaluation tool that considers the main cost drivers of the rail, truck and conveyor haulage systems on the market today. In almost every circumstance, the advantages of a haulage solution are clear. A haulage system is outlined that is fully automated, including driverless operation, and that provides increased tonnage, safety and equipment life and reduced maintenance downtime. Pt-Al-X alloys have shown good mechanical properties and adequate oxidation resistance. Starting from a promising Pt-Al-Cr alloy, the influence of Ni additions was investigated. After ageing finely dispersed precipitates are observed. Nb, Ta, Ti and Re increase strength when added as partial substitute for Al. Minor additions of B increase creep resistance and rupture time remarkably, owing to strengthening of the grain boundaries. The evolution of the alloy development programme as well as selected properties of the multi-component Pt-base alloys are presented.

Ultrafine ferrite (UFF) grains may be produced in surface layers of plate steels using controlled intermediate cooling followed by deformation. Experiments were conducted using a 0.12 C - 1.26 Mn steel on a Gleeble 1500 hot deformation simulator. Taguchi designed experiments were used to evaluate prior austenite grain size, intermediate cooling rate, intermediate cooling temperature, intermediate hold time and amount of reduction in order to observe the effects of variables and their interactions on the final microstructure while minimizing the number of required test runs. Evaluation of resulting microstructures and mechanical properties revealed a preferred thermal and mechanical history for developing ultrafine microstructures in surface layers of plate steels. Application of the fundamental concepts of phase transformations to industrial plate rolling is considered.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove, grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions 2 issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor; if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

"The Sangan iron ore mines (SIOM) in Iran are located in a remote area near the Afghanistan border. The SIOM deposit contains a geological resource of 1.1 Gt (1.2 billion st) of mostly magnetite with an iron (Fe) grade ranging from 27 to 61 percent. The Iranian government plans a stepwise development of SIOM in cooperation with private companies to satisfy the growing demand of the Iranian steel industry. Sustainable development is an influential ethical concept in mining all around the world. However, a successful realization of a sustainable development plan is not possible without a foundation on the core values and regarding the specific circumstances of the individual mining country. This paper introduces SIOM and describes sustainable development activities undertaken during its development. From the early stages, these activities have been realized to secure the acceptance of the stakeholders in the region. To evaluate their effects, indicators were filtered to the ones with the highest priority for the stakeholders. Moreover, Islamic values and Iranian regulations and their influences on SIOM were analyzed.Mining industry in Iran The Islamic Republic of Iran holds 68 types of minerals, including salt, sand and gravel, gypsum, chrome, lead, zinc, copper, coal, gold, iron, etc., with 33.5 Gt (37 billion st) of proven reserves and more than 51.7 Gt (57 billion st) of potential resources. Iran is ranked among the 15 major mineral rich countries (1). In accordance with the statistics published by Statistical Center of Iran (SCI), there were 5,316 active mines and 84,922 employees in the whole country in 2012-2013 (2) and, according to the statistics published by Central Bank of Iran (CBI) in 2011, the share of this sector in the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country was 1.2 percent (3)."

It discusses intrinsic production problems and identifies opportunities for modifying operating practices so that the quality and yield of foundry coke can be enhanced without unnecessary investment in new equipment. Major topics include operating data and attendant practices and problems, the relationship of carbonization phenomena to coke quality and yield, environ- mental impacts of foundry coke plant operations, suggested research and development opportunities, and data on components of oven charges and on foundry coke production and shipments.

Copper and cobalt can be found on nickel laterite ores, and cobalt can be found also on copper ores, and many contaminants such as iron, aluminum, and magnesium are associated with these ores. In hydrometallurgical process, a purification step is necessary after leaching due to the presence of these impurities. Chelating resins are more selective for some metals than others, making them more efficient than cationic resins. This overview discusses chelating resin applications to recover copper, nickel, and cobalt from mining process and mining tailings and the effect of contaminants in leach solution. Chelating resins with iminodiacetate functional group can be used for selective copper recovery, and both iminodiacetate and bis-picolylamine resins are highly selective for nickel and cobalt. Chelating resins with the same functional group can have different performances on the kinetics of loading, because of variations of structure, the density of functional group, and degree of cross-linking. This article reviews commercial chelating resins that can be applied in leach solutions with different compositions, and also possible innovations for uses of chelating resins to recover metals from mining process and mining tailings.

The Bureau of Mines is developing a new technological approach to handling the problems of fires in abandoned coal mines and waste banks. This new technology involves the accelerated combustion of "waste" coals in place (i.e., in situ) under controlled exhaust ventilation conditions, which allows for total management of the combustion products; including utilization of the heat produced" This new concept could significantly lower the costs of reducing the environmental and public safety hazards associated with waste coal fires, and could lead to the conversion of a coal waste to a coal resource. The controlled burnout technology has progressed from the laboratory stage to a full-scale field evaluation stage at the site of an abandoned-coal-mine fire. This first report describes the site selection, evaluation, and preparation, and the design and construction of the full-scale controlled burnout installation. Subsequent reports will deal with the results of the operational field trial.

The work of Merical and other investigators indicates that the phenomenon of age-hardening in alloys of the duralumin type is primarily dependent upon the variation in the solubility of copper with temperature. In addition to copper, however, these alloys contain small amounts of magnesium, silicon, manganese and iron, which may affect the age-hardening either directly or indirectly. The effect of these elements on the solubility of copper and on the manner in which this solubility varies with the temperature is of considerable interest, therefore. The suggested new method for control of geomechanical state of undermined rock mass ensures, as a safety measure for the earth surface protection, the decrease of deformations by 2,5 - 10 times in mining the single seam, and by 1,5 - 5 times - in mining bed series, i. e. approximately within the seam ranges as in the application of full packing with various compressive properties or partial extraction of resources over the area with different coefficients of extraction. It should be noted that this new method has the following advantages o\w rhr. conventional methods: a) the decrease of the packing area and packing works volume by 2 - 4 fold including the operating and productive expenses; b) the elimination of mineral losses due to the increase of extraction coefficient up to 100 5%; c) rock utilization from workings drivage by its placing in the mined - out space. Perspective field of application of this method: disconservation of mineral resources in the left protective pillars of various designation.

This report describes how a limited number of preliminary exploration drill-hole assays from a mineral deposit can be used to design grid spacing that is both economic and efficient for subsequent evaluation drilling of that deposit. Relationships between desired precision of the estimate of grade of ore and drilling cost are used to determine the economic drill-hole spacing. The statistical concept of precision in estimating grade of ore is used to determine the efficient drill-hole spacing. Assay data from approximately 50 known copper deposits were studied, and the relationships of the statistical parameters of these deposits were computed. Drilling requirements for various precisions of the estimates of grade of ore were computed for some of these known deposits to serve as guides for drilling future copper deposits. The effect of various geologic factors on the trend in grade of ore and, therefore, on the drilling requirements is shown for certain deposits.

Mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing. The stage of measurement used in the chapter is normally what is termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes for some minerals the product of auxiliary processing operations at or near mines.

Porous and permeable rocks deeply buried in sedimentary basins contain immense volumes of hot water with the potential to supply low-grade heat energy. A part of Canada with sizeable potential for low-grade geothermal energy is the northern Williston Basin of southern Saskatchewan. In this region, the University of Regina has conducted a geological study investigating the feasibility of producing large quantities of warm water suitable for space heating in the Regina - Moose Jaw area. The study has shown that the most favourable geothermal reservoirs are in the Basal Clastic Unit (Cambrian Ordovician), which, at an approximate depth of 2,000 metres has predicted temperatures of 71°C to 74°C. We anticipate sustainable flow rates from these reservoirs of 100 to 300 ms/hr. The water contains about 150,000ppm of total dissolved solids, mostly sodium chloride. It is anticipated that the sulphate content will be 3,000 to 6,000 ppm, that the dissolved oxygen and hydrogen sulphide content will be small, and that the waters will be neutral to slightly alkaline. It is anticipated that the piezometric level will be 46 m below the ground surface for reservoirs in the upper part of the Basal Clastic Unit and 141m below the ground surface for the lower reservoirs of the unit. Plans are to build a low-grade geothermal research, testing and demonstration facility at the University of Regina. To be a practical demonstration, the facility will have to handle very large volumes of water. Because of high salinity, the water will be re injected into a subsurface reservoir. We do not anticipate insurmountable problems because of salinities or as a result of corrosion provided that the waters are not aerated during handling

Steel wire weld mesh is a common industry standard surface support used in underground mining, traditionally installed with mining drills during the bolting cycle. As underground mining depth and stress increase, mining methods and their sequences at these depths place challenges on conventional surface support options. These challenges have provided a need for high capacity surface support options that improve development efficiency, reduce the need for secondary ground support installation and is easily installed with current mining equipment. A 5m2 mesh testing machine was built, suspending a 9500kg concrete slab, designed with multiple hold down points to test varying bolting patterns. Mesh load and displacement is accurately measured using a data acquisition system which pushes against the restrained mesh module with an available 200kN load and 1200mm displacement capacity. A testing program comparing conventional surface support, straps and combinations of both were tested for baseline results. New module designs incorporating existing mesh types and new design concepts were manufactured to allow for single pass installation during a bolting cycle. Nine mesh types, mesh/strap combinations and new mesh module designs were compared using the same test method. Based on these results, two high capacity mesh module types are produced. This paper will detail the test program, load and displacement results and underground mesh module performance, describing the two high capacity mesh modules function within the development cycle and manual handling. The Old Bevier Aerobic Wetland in Macon County, Missouri, was constructed between 1990 and 1991 by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Land Reclamation Program for the purpose of treating acid mine drainage (AMD). The principal source of the AMD is from an underground mine that operated during the 1920's through 1950's, which was partially exposed during surface mining in the 1960’s. Limestone bedding of an AMD collection system provided alkalinity similar to an anoxic limestone drain (ALD). Because the original aerobic wetland failed when a critical dilution water supply became unavailable, the total acidity of the AMD overwhelmed the limited neutralization ability of the aerobic wetland. The aquatic vegetation deteriorated and treatment became ineffective. The Missouri Land Reclamation Program with the assistance of the Office of Surface Mining, Mid-Continent Regional Coordinating Center rehabilitated the Old Bevier Aerobic Wetland in 2001, incorporating newer technologies to improve the performance. The new system, Old Bevier II treatment facility, consists of a 2-stage vertical flow pond (VFP) with associated oxidation cells and aerobic wetlands. This paper discusses the performance of this passive AMD treatment system, updating an earlier report. The new treatment system has operated with nearly continuous net alkaline discharge and a high iron removal rate. Treatment improves during warm months when emergent vegetation is fully established and biologic activity is greater. Reduction in system efficiency is evident during winter months.

This report, authorized under Contract Number H0220065, Amendment Number Six, documents the results of an investigation of lighting system modifications and designs for working place illumination in high and low coal entries of underground coal mines. The portable and machine mounted system designs, both modified and prototype, represent a continuation of work performed under Contract Number H0111403, Amendment Number One. See the Final Technical Report dated May 26, 1972 for detailed information concerning this prior Contract. All modified and prototype systems met the performance requirements of Bureau of Mines Specification 2G, as proved by test. In addition, the systems met the requirement for illumination, as specified in the Contract and in the proposed standards which were generated in response to Public Law 91-173.
