Pressure maintenance by water flooding in the Pembina Field made consideration of wet crude dehydration and disposal of the produced water mandatory. Crude dehydration, the treatment and disposal of produced water, as well as the sale of gas and crude oil were expected to be handled more efficiently at one central point than at several conventional batteries. This plan was effected by routing the produced fluids to the central station by way of several well testing batteries referred to as satellites. To realize the full efficiency inherent in such consolidation the entire system was made self-regulating. Programming ensures the testing and proper routing of all products to their destination. Forty producing wells have been self-operated during the winter 1959 -1960 with gratifying results.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines made an economic appraisal of the Buttermilk study area, Inyo County, California in October 1980. Results of surveys indicate no potential for metallic, non-metallic, or energy resources in the area. However, glacial till covering most of the area prevented bedrock examinations by the appraisal teams or earlier prospectors. No mining claims are known to be in the area. INTRODUCTION Present Studies The U.S. Bureau of Mines, Western Field Operations Center, searched county mining claim records and other data available concerning mineral deposits, claims, leases, production, and mining activity in the area. The Bureau conducted field work in October 1980 searching for prospects and claim locations. Fourteen reconnaissance lode and placer samples taken from the area were analyzed for gold, silver, and tungsten; a spectrographic analysis also was run on selected samples.

The general or macroclimate of the study sites in western North Dakota is characterized by rapid and sometimes extreme daily and day-to-day temperature fluctuations, rainfall patterns which are erratic in spatial and temporal distribution and intensity, generally low relative humidity, plentiful sunshine, nearly continuous air movement, and a relatively short frost-free period. Of particular relevance to plant growth and productivity is the mosaic of microclimates: these microclimates are affected by landform (convex and concave surfaces); exposure; slope angle, length and aspect; soil color, texture and surface cover (litter), and vegetation cover. The most critical plant growth governing factor in this region is available water. It is determined principally by water input (precipitation) and water loss (evapotranspiration) which is increased by high temperatures, wind, and poor litter and vegetation cover. While spring and fall precipitation is generally gentle and soil-soaking summer rains frequently come in the form of intensive, soil-washing, localized convective thunderstorms of short duration. Due to the convective nature of these storms, summer rainfall is particularly affected by regional topography; southwest slopes and crests often receive more rainfall since these storms usually move in a northeasterly direction. The water loss due to runoff and consequent soil erosion arc major problems resulting from such "cloudbursts". Previous fall precipitation (September - October) when added to current seasonal precipitation (March - August) was found to be significantly correlated (r-.93) with plant production. Winter precipitation (snowfall) is relatively light as the prevailing weather is dominated by dry polar air masses from the north. The nearly continuous wind is responsible for removing snow from open exposures and depositing it in depressions and windbreaks. Although the winter precipitation is not a large component of the total annual precipitation, conservation of that which does occur would contribute to plant production during the following growing season. Generally clear skies over the region facilitate receipt of abundant sunshine at the earth's surface. While good for early season soil warming and plant photosynthesis, this abundant sunshine coupled with long days and nearly continuous wind is responsible for evapotranspiration exceeding precipitation by an average of six inches between June' and September. On a local (micro) scale, the water deficit is most severe on the southern exposures which receive the most direct (most effective) solar radiation and therefore are warmer than other exposures. On a broader scale, it was found that ambient temperature extremes were slightly but significantly greater in the town of Beulah in the Knife River Valley than at the upland test sites, This may have been due to the difference in topography and/or the "urban heat island" effect. It is known that air temperatures in large cities may be 2° to 4°C higher than that of the surrounding countryside. It is also well known that basins, depressions or valleys are sinks for cold air masses and are often subject to frosts not occurring on adjacent upland sites.

"Poor Pb-Zn selectivity during Pb flotation in laboratory tests on a Mississippi Valley-type Pb-Zn ore was traced to apH effect. In the pH range, 9.5 to 11.0 sphalerite floated readily without copper activation. Compared to sphalerite flotation with copper activation this procedure gave equivalent selectivity but reduced flotation rate.Possible mechanisms of this sphalerite flotation without copper activation are discussed. Activation by Fe(OH)2 is suggested, the Fe- + ions being derived from superficial oxidation of pyrite in the ore. IntroductionGalena and sphalerite commonly occur together. A typical procedure, using xanthate collectors, is to float the galena first, at pH - 8, followed by flotation of sphalerite after activation with copper (II) sulphate at pH - 10 (to depress pyrite).Flotation tests following this procedure in an undergraduate laboratory course with a Pb-Zn ore from Polaris failed to achieve consistent selective flotation of galena. Occasionally a considerable amount of sphalerite, even though unactivated with CUSO4, floated. This was traced to accidentally high pH. A systematic study was carried out which revealed that sphalerite floated readily in the pH range 9.5 to 11.0 without activation by CuSO4 This paper describes the results of the study and discusses a possible mechanism of this flotation of sphalerite."

Minerals are a fundamental component of the Nation" material and economic base. Without a continuous supply of minerals to meet growing and changing needs, the basic character of our society would be very different. The importance of minerals to the United States was reemphasized by the Congress in I970 when it enacted the Mining and Minerals Policy Act, which stated that it is the continuing policy of the Federal Government in the national interest to foster and encourage private enterprise in (I) the development of economically sound and stable domestic mining, minerals, metal and mineral reclamation industries, (2) the orderly and economic development of domestic mineral resources, reserves, and reclamation of metals and minerals to help assure satisfaction of industrial, security and environmental needs, (3) mining, mineral, and metallurgical research, including the use and recycling of scrap to promote the wise and efficient use of our natural and reclaimable mineral recources, and (4) the study and development of methods for the disposal, control, and reclamation of mineral waste products, and the reclamation of mined land, so as to lessen any adverse impact of mineral extraction and processing upon the physical environment that may result from mining or mineral activities.,.

At first sight, the extinction of a mine fire by the action of some such gas as carbon dioxide would appear to be quite a simple and practicable operation. From a consideration of the theoretical aspects only of the question, it becomes evident that the matter is not so simple as it appears to be at first sight. The fire at the Senghenydd Colliery occurred as the result of the disastrous explosion of October 14th, 1913. This explosion was confined to the west side of the colliery; and as a result the timbers in the main intake on this side were set on fire; but these were soon buried beneath falls, and the tire continued under them. Attempts were made to extinguish it with water, with the aid of chemical extinguishers, and by digging it out; hut these had to he abandoned, and ultimately the fire-zone was sealed off by “ bashings” (stoppings). By December, progress in the decrease of combustion was so slow that it was decided to try the effect of inert gas. The installation, control and operation of the carbon dioxide plant and associated water-gauge are described in detail and conclusions drawn for the extinguishing of mine fires by CO2

The Bulyanhulu Mine, Tanzania is constantly trialing ideas for improvements in the drill and blast process. The project work has resulted in a large number of choices in explosive type and charging methods being available for blast design. Interestingly, though booster sensitive bulk emulsion had been introduced to the site to reduce dilution, better results were being obtained from reduced charge columns (decoupled columns of poured anfo in 50mm pvc pipe) and pneumatically loaded anfo upholes, which had been traced. In order to compare the explosive type and charge up-methods, an explosives comparison trial was performed.

Abstract-Eclogite is an important source of diamond in the upper mantle, but is more localized than peridotite. Using eclogitic minerals in kimberlite and diamond exploration is also more problematic than using the well-known peridotite-derived indicator minerals Cr-pyrope and magnesiochromite. The problems include color similarities between orange garnets from eclogites, Cr-poor megacrysts, and crustal garnets, chemical similarities with Cr-poor megacryst suite garnets (specifically elevated Na2O contents), and low abundance of eclogite garnet xenocrysts in most known kimberlites. Chemical screens must be used carefully to distinguish between varieties of orange garnets in exploration samples. For example, most orange garnets of crustal origin have >22 wt% FeO, with mantle eclogite garnets having lower values. Na2O-bearing garnets from the Cr-poor megacryst suite can be distinguished from Na2O-bearing garnets from diamondiferous eclogites by the elevated TiO2 contents of the former. The low abundance of eclogite garnet xenocrysts in kimberlites worldwide, however, may dictate that use of eclogite garnets in diamond exploration in most cases be restricted to advanced stages of kimberlite exploration and evaluation of kimberlite diamond potential. Crpyropes, Mg-ilmenites and Cr-rich chromites are more useful than eclogitic garnets in most stages of diamond exploration. If orange garnet xenocrysts are sought in a kimberlite exploration program, those from the Cr-poor megacryst suite will be more useful than eclogite derived garnets, due to the typical great abundance of the former, although they carry no information of the diamond potential of the host kimberlite.

In 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied a 17,320-acre portion of the 52,143-acre Little High Rock Canyon Wilderness Study Area (CA-020-913/NV-020-008) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Humboldt and Washoe Counties, NV, about 42 miles north from Gerlach. Three areas of epithermal alteration, similar to alteration associated with disseminated gold deposits, were found in the study area. One of the areas occurs along a northeast-trending structural lineament. Southwest of the study area two gold prospects undergoing active exploration, as well JS a gold deposit being prepared for production, occur along the same lineament. The Bureau of Mines examination, however, did not find evidence for gold resources in the study area.

A phase in strip mining of bituminous coal is the overturning of the surface of the land. The purpose of this report is to acquaint the operators and others interested in stripping with the work that has been done in certain States to reclaim the surface of land from which the coal has been removed by this method of raining. The preparation of this manuscript follows an extensive study of the subject in the field in the course of which a large number of strip mines were visited. ACKNOWLEDGMENT The information used in the report was obtained through the courtesy and cooperation of the operators of the mines visited, State officials and educational institutions, and others interested in the subject.

[The steady increase of aluminum production means a corresponding increase of carbon consumption in the alumina-reduction cells. Improved petroleum techniques constantly reduce the amount of byproduct petroleum-coke production. These, trends threaten the alumina-reduction works with possible shortages of carbon, which must be supplied from some other source. In anticipation of this shortages, an investigation into the possibility of using coal as an alternative source of carbon was begun at the Northwest Experiment Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines. The investigation lit has developed bench-scale methods that produce carbon of higher purity than is required by specifications for anode carbon. Additional work will b required to bring these processes to pilot-plant seals and to prove the suitability of the carbons, produced or aluminum-anode consumption.]

Basic data were recorded on the decompositions that take place during thermal decomposition of siderite (FeC03). Both the naturally occurring and a synthetically prepared mineral were studied by differential thermal, thermo-gravimetric, X-ray-diffraction, and chemical (including gas) analyses. Thermal decomposition was studied in the media of dry air, moist air, dry carbon dioxide, dry helium, and dry carbon monoxide and at atmospheric and at reduced pressures. Results showed the thermal decomposition of FeC03 to be an extremely complex process, dependent on environmental factors and side reactions that cannot now be completely controlled. Therefore, full understanding of the reaction involved must depend on additional research with advanced evaluation techniques.

IT is with sincere appreciation and a deep sense of responsibility that I accept the honor of delivering the Howe Memorial Lecture. In our time metallurgical research has delved into phenomena ever more complex in character, so that much of this work must be done by organized teams. We, of the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories and the Electro Metallurgical Co., are truly a team and the lecture which is to follow is due largely to a few of the outstanding members of that team here cited and well known to you in their own right: John Lamont, whose work deserves special recognition, Walter Crafts, William Forgeng, William Binder, Robert Fowler, and David Swan. Thus it is a fitting pleasure to accept this honor for the research institution which I represent. Henry Marion Howe was truly inspirational and his breadth of view was such that he could use either the method of rigid proof or implied mechanism to further the broad understanding. But perhaps his outstanding characteristic was his sound judgment and his ability to weigh observations. The following is replete with observations and judgment as to their implication. We would like to feel that it is the type of dissertation which Howe, himself, would have enjoyed. Chromium carbides in stainless steel have, in a sense, been a key to the progress of the stainless steel industry. Brearley's first stainless steel, containing approximately 0.30 pct C, was successful because it differed from previous Fe-Cr alloys in that the carbides were present in such amount and form as to provide the stainless and cutting properties. Again, the 12 pct Cr die steels with a carbon content of 1.5 pct or more achieved their properties by virtue of the form and distribution of the chromium carbides. In the straight chromium steels with from 12 to 25 pct Cr, chromium carbide amount and distribution are once more the determinants with respect to physical properties and corrosion resistance. In each of the cases just cited the role of the carbide is in essence similar to that of iron carbide in carbon steel and this story is so well known that we need not dwell on it. In the austenitic stainless steels, the chromium carbide plays only a minor positive role with respect to mechanical properties, and for corrosion resistance the objective is to achieve maximum homogeneity. Thus the tendency has been to ever lower the carbon and correlatively the chromium carbide content of the austenitic steels. Today stainless steels with carbon less than 0.03 pct are beginning to find their true place, and this is being aided in major degree by our Company's introduction of a new type of ferrochromium having negligible carbon. The role of carbon in these austenitic steels has long been recognized, and a truly enormous amount of research has been devoted to the subject. Much has been learned about corrosion resistance, but the attack on the problem from the point of view of carbide precipitation and the nature thereof has left much to be understood. Because of its fundamental importance to the future of stainless steels, further study of the mechanism of carbide formation in austenitic steels is of interest. In the 18-8 Cr-Ni steels, which are typical of the austenitic class of steel, carbon is soluble in the aus-tenite to the extent of approximately 0.15 pct at 1832°F (1000°C). The solubility becomes less with decreasing temperature, so that at 1652°F (900°C) the solubility limit is approximately 0.06 pct, at 1472°F (800°C) it is about 0.03 pct, and at 932°F (500°C) it is approximately 0.01 pct. Obviously this is the ideal situation for the classical precipitation phenomenon. It is true that, in a sense, 18-8 austenite resulting from annealing is in a metastable state, and the phenomenon of ferritic precipitation from this austenite should be considered. However, in a so-called fully austenitic 18-8 steel this is secondary with respect to the carbides and can be neglected. A wide variety of chromium carbides is known. Only one chromium carbide, Cr,,C,,, frequently referred to as Cr,C, has been found in unmodified low carbon 18-8 steel. This, fortunately, simplifies the study of the precipitation phenomena. For this study an A.I.S.I. type 304 stainless steel of commercial quality was selected. Analysis showed C 0.07 pct, Mn 0.49 pct, Si 0.33 pct, Ni 9.34 pct, Cr 18.91 pct, and N 0.033 pct. As expected with this composition the steel was homogeneous after annealing except for a few pools of ferrite, which were disregarded in that their location was not coincident with subsequent carbide precipitation areas. On corrosion testing the steel was normal and typical of good commercial quality. Specimens 1/2xlx4 in. were annealed and subjected to precipitation heat treatment for 100 hr at 100" temperature intervals from 1000° to 1500°F and for ten selected intervals ranging from 5 min to 64 hr at 1300°F. An account is given of the history and operation of the Straits Tin market and the Penang price. The procedure by which the official ruling tin price is determined is presented and the way in which bids are treated is outlined: the price declared in Penang is the result of a joint operation by the two Malaysian smelters and is arrived at by finding the highest price at which the whole of the day's offerings for sale can be sold, thus reflecting the marriage of the offerings of the individual mine producers with the demand for Straits Tin from the consuming countries of the world. A system of accurate weighing, sampling and assaying of concentrates delivered to the smelters' premises enables the various ore-buying agencies of the two smelters to notify their central offices promptly of the estimated tin content of the concentrates their customers wish to price that day, so that by 11.00 a.m. both smelters will have exchanged with each other figures giving the total quantity of metal they have for inclusion in the day's market, at the same time exchanging particulars of the bids they have received. Miners are encouraged to sell regularly for cash and an evenness is thus achieved which avoids large daily fluctuations in overall quantity.

Introduction Drinnan is situated in the Prairie Creek coal area in the Foothills belt of Alberta. It lies on the main line of the Canadian National railway from Edmonton to Jasper. The exact location is shown on the map (Figure I). Interest in the field was aroused by several circumstances: Its proximity to Brule and Pocahontas on the southwest and to Coal-spur on the southeast led to the belief that coal might be economically produced here. There was already at Hinton a 3 ft. 9 in. coal seam being mined by Seabolt. The coal was of very good grade, being black and shiny in appearance with well defined cleavage and a heat value of 12,000 B. t.u. Outcrops of coal had also been noticed on the north side of the Athabaska river and Fish creek. These facts led the Jasper Coal Company to investigate the field. This Company considered taking over the Seabolt property at Hinton, but, owing to the size of the seam, this plan was abandoned and prospecting by diamond drills and test pits was started two years ago in the district east of Hinton. After prospecting had been completed, the most favourable district was found to be in township 51, ranges 24 and 25, west of the 5th meridian. The Company's lease includes all or parts of sections 18, 19, 20, and 28 in range 24, and sections 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 in range 25. The approximate boundaries of the property are the Canadian National railway on the north, Happy creek on the west, and Cache Percotte creek on the east. The lease comprises 3,100 acres, and the total amount of coal in sight is estimated at 100,000,000 tons.

Two commercial nickel solvent extraction plants treating laterite leach solutions and using LIX®84-I have been operated in Australia. These circuits employ similar extraction chemistry but differ in their leaching and stripping operations. An alternative process involving elements of both can be conceived. The preparation of the feed solution to solvent extraction plays an important role in nickel extraction using LIX®84-I and the special features of manganese removal and cobalt oxidation in the preparation of the PLS are discussed. This paper compares these three circuit configurations with special reference to the extraction and reductive stripping of cobalt, the transfer of zinc and copper to the strip aqueous, ammonia transfer and sulfur transfer. Roast-reduction smelting (RRS) of nickel concentrate, combined with flash smelting of copper concentrate, was one of the process options that Inco considered as a means of meeting its 1994 sulfur dioxide abatement target at its Copper Cliff operations. RRS involves deep roasting the nickel concentrate in fluid bed roasters. The roaster off-gas is heated in a sulfuric acid plant, and the low sulfur calcine is reduction smelted with coke in an electric furnace to yield a sulfur-deficient matte. The latter material is converted to Bessemer matte in Peirce-Smith converters, with minimal evolution of sulfur dioxide, and the converter slag is reverted to the electric furnace. Excellent nickel and cobalt recoveries are obtained. This paper discusses the development of RRS, including extensive commercial scale testing at Inco's Thompson Smelter, and its key operating parameters.

FOR many years, you and your fellow members of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers have devotedly and ably applied yourselves to the art of making iron and steel. having foremost in your minds the conservation of raw materials, suitable and efficient facilities, economical processes, and improved quality of product. For the past three strenuous years you have contributed wholeheartedly to meeting the problems of increased production. You have conducted scientific and technical investigations and research, recommended experiments. and gathered all the available and valuable information possible to gain the desired objectives. You have had many obstacles and difficulties to overcome. In the early days of your organization, there was some lack of co-operation from the industry itself-perhaps, for example, some failure to recognize the mutual advantages of free exchange of experiences and information. But regardless of any hindrances, you have made many and valuable contribution which have tended to make iron and steel manufacture leas of an art and more of a science.
