Many devices used in mining are not monitored by sensors or do not have their own intelligence. By retrofitting sensors and real-time data processing, machines can be integrated into an existing digital infrastructure. Within the project Mine.io funded by the European Union a Sandvik DE110 exploration drill rig is being digitized using various AI algorithms at research and education Mine “Forschungs- und Lehrbergwerk Reiche Zeche (FLB)” of TU Freiberg. The aim is to increase the productivity of drilling with real-time evaluation of the current rock to be drilled and the current maintenance status of the drill rig. The drill rig is equipped with a speed sensor, pressure sensors in the hydraulics, 3-axis vibration sensor, borehole length measurement and temperature sensor. The sensors are additionally attached to the drilling rig and no structural changes on the drill rig are necessary. All data are processed real-time at a server structure outside of the mine using AI algorithms to analyze which rock (ore or host rock) is being drilled and to perform predictive maintenance. Processed Data are visualized for the operator to optimize the workflow and the productivity.

He adds that subsequent reduction in plant performance and resulting increased maintenance costs occur. It is generally assumed that this statement is substantially correct as the fan handles the complete output from the mill, but with modern materials, reduction in performance and subsequent .maintenance are not now a problem. This consideration of handling the pulverised coal in the fan is more than offset by the advantage of operating the mill under suction which results in cleaner operating conditions, simpler feeder arrangements and elimination of complicated seals on the mill.and feeder unit. It should be specially noted that whereas mill exhausters in the past have used chequer plate blades (sometimes with the addition of hard facing by electrode deposit) it is modern practice to provide fan blades of up to 1 in·. thick Ni-hard suitablyheat treated, with the circumferential section of the fan also in Ni-hard. Underground mining environments bring occupational health and safety issues with some severe dangers such as mine disasters like explosions. During such events, miners might escape using main access openings, or find a safe haven like refuge alternatives (RAs) to wait and be rescued and evacuated to the surface. In this paper, RAs are explained with their early and current applications. A classification as permanent and portable is explained depending on the conditions and their abilities. This classification is followed by the utilization and survivability of RAs with the requirements and recommendations of the main mining countries. Based on the utilization and survivability constraints, basic human requirements, waiting for a rescue team, and the required physical specifications of RAs during the events are analyzed in detail for various countries with their regulations. Among these, the specification, resistance to the explosion, is discussed in particular, and the studies in the literature are examined in terms of structural deformation. The highest deformed zones, the beneficiation of reinforcing steel components such as stiffeners, and the simulation approaches are investigated through this review.

The EMEW® cell has been developed to overcome a number of inherent limitations in conventional electrowinning technology, particularly the high cost and restricted process windows characteristic of conventional hardware. The technology has been widely demonstrated to achieve high performance for various metals under chemical conditions well outside the limits required for efficient operation of conventional cells. This process flexibility offers significant opportunities for cost savings. in recovery of zinc from primary and secondary sources. The EMEW® technology is now available on a fully engineered basis, as a versatile commercial alternative to conventional electrowinning hardware. Application of the EMEW® cell for recovery of secondary zinc material offers significant advantages to the recycling industry. For example, a selective caustic leach can be used where there are high levels of iron or other contaminants in the target material. The reagent requirement is minimal as most of the caustic is regenerated in the bell and zinc dust that may be required for electrolyte purification is produced in the cell. A high purity zinc powder or cathode is produced in the cell. In the case of acidic zinc electrolytes, the cell is capable of operating over a much wider range of operating conditions than a conventional cell.

This is the first of two papers concerned with rock stress inputs to various mine design issues at the large Ok Tedi open pit mine in Papua New Guinea. The companion paper (also published at this conference) is ‘The Application of Rock Stress Inputs to Stability Assessments at Ok Tedi Mine, Papua New Guinea’ (de Bruyn et al, 2014).Stresses are a required input for numerical modelling of mine design issues. However, for some operations, like the very large Ok Tedi open pit mine in remote rugged mountainous terrain, direct and representative measurement of rock stresses can be technically difficult and expensive. In such situations, development of an appropriate and sufficient understanding of rock stresses can be challenging.This was addressed for Ok Tedi by considering the following:The tectonic and regional geologic setting of the mine.Results from three different programs of rock stress measurement over 19 years, including hydraulic fracturing (1991), acoustic emission (2007) and overcoring (2010). Some interesting results of the overcoring work are discussed. It was done in a 4 km long drainage tunnel, which intersected a thick monzodiorite intrusive that has metamorphosed contacts to host contact Ieru Formation siltstones; anomalously low horizontal stresses were measured within the monzodiorite.Compilation of rock stress measurements from other New Guinea mines and prospects, both in Papua New Guinea and Indonesian West Papua.Comparisons between the variable Ok Tedi rock stresses and similar data from other porphyry copper deposits.CITATION:Lee, M F, Baczynski, N R P, Mills, K W, de Bruyn, I A and Mollison, L, 2014. Pressure oxidative treatment of whole ores and/or mineral concentrates is used to leach or liberate metals of value for downstream recovery. Silver, when present, is often lost in processing, precipitating as a cyanide-insoluble jarosite in the residue. Depending on pressure oxidation conditions, the degree of silver loss to jarosite can vary dramatically. Batch bench-scale testwork is often performed to define that loss, and then assess the implications in continuous operations. This paper focusses specifically on the impact of CESL pressure oxidation conditions on silver recovery, and discusses limitations of batch bench-scale testing as well as means of overcoming these limitations to better predict silver recovery in the scale up from bench-scale to continuous operations. Since silver is only partially soluble in both sulphate and chloride media, it will gradually leach and deport to a jarosite as oxidation progresses. When a silver-insoluble anion, for example iodide, is dosed prior to oxidation, there is a marked improvement in silver recovery from batchgenerated residue; however, that benefit is not consistently seen in continuous operations. The difference has been attributed to the dynamic solution conditions in the batch test, specifically the first few moments of oxidation. Using these principles, a predictive correlation has been established between initial leach concentrations of iron and acid and ultimate silver recovery with iodide addition.

Analyses of statistical data indicate that haulage accidents are one of the largest sources of injuries and fatalities in underground coal mines, and that the rate of accidents in transportation has been increasing during the past few years. These previous analyses were performed by correlating accident or fatality data at a rather high level of miner activity. In this present investigation, underground surveys were made by observing conditions and activities in some detail at a rather low level of activity in an attempt to understand factors contributing to hazards in the specific situations observed. The aim of the current study was to derive preventive measures that might obviate the hazardous conditions and unsafe acts observed; and, following this, to provide recommendations for additional research and development to reduce accident potential in underground transportation. The major project tasks are diagrammed together with the task outputs in figure 1-1. Initially, a preliminary study of ell underground haulage operations was performed in order to establish the kinds of data needed and to provide the rationale leading to the data requirement. At the same time, the various types of haulage equipment used for each operation were defined. A preliminary analysis of each type of haulage operation was performed in order to establish the sequence of tasks required to operate haulage equipment. These tasks were transferred directly onto observation forms, and were used in developing interview forms. In parallel with the task analysis, a review was made of accidents and hazards that might occur during each type of operation.

This paper reviews the circumstances that led to the development and construction of a commercial-scale vertical shaft carbonizer at Conmore, Alberta. This form coking process may be regarded as having potential application in other areas. Coal pelletizing offers a promising method of decreasing coal agglomeration costs under certain circumstances. Pellets can be rolled easily from -35-mesh coal, provided that a minimum of -200-mesh coal is present. Bentonite was found to be the best binder and was most effective when added in amounts of about 2 per cent. The water content of the coal pellets was observed to vary from 18 to 23 per cent. As a by-product of this investigation, it seems possible that fine coal could be converted into stoker feed by this process. A short investigation of the effect of heating rate on the carbonization of pellets was conducted. MINING operations in the Waihi mine began, under the present proprietorship in the year 1889. Previous to this, and as far back as the year 1880, the presence of reefs in the Martha Hill had been known, and surface working on a small scale had beencarried out, without any great measure of success. The only method of treatment in use at this time was the old system of light stamps, amalgamating tables and berdans, and recovery by this method being low, little margin for profit was left, so thatthe property in these days was not considered of great importance and work on the area was only carried on spasmodically by different owners.On the transfer of the leases to the present company, calcining, dry crushing, and hot pan amalgamation was adopted as the method of treatment, and this system was continued till the more modern cyanide process was introduced and applied. As themethods of treatment and gold-saving became more efficient with the application of more modern and scientific processes, the importance and future prospects of the mine became more and more pronounced, and mining on a larger and more comprehensive scale was gradually established.As in the case of ore treatment, mining methods in the early stages were not as far adv.anced as the adopted practice of today, and numerous shafts, levels close together in vertical height.

Fay's glossary3/ of terms contains the following definition of "black sand": Heavy grains of various minerals which have a dark color and. are usually found accompanying gold in alluvial deposits, for example, magnetite, chromite, ilmenite, cassiterite, tourmaline, and others. The Bureau of Mines is issuing this report in answer to the many inquiries from individuals and firms as to how they may treat or sell the heavy black sands that accumulate in the sluice boxes of beach and river placering and to warn such individuals and firms against becoming too enthusiastic over the chances of striking it rich. For a half century or longer much money, energy, and time have been wasted in devising, building, and trying numerous machines to recover gold and platinum, also gem stones, from sand that generally has not been worth the effort. Volumes have been written on the subject, and thousands of letters of inquiry have been received by agencies of the State and Federal Governments. The demand for information has been so great that all of the Bureau's publications dealing wholly or partly with black sands are out of print. They are listed at the end of this report.

This report summarizes the results of a nationwide investigation completed in 1964 to determine the nonferrous base metal ore reserves and potential sources of ore and to evaluate criteria for their ultimate exploitation. Engineers of the Bureau of Mines contacted mining company officials, reviewed reports and Government records, and where necessary made personal appraisals in arriving at the results. The estimates are presented by metals in ores in geographic regions and include some of the problems affecting the reserves and potential sources. The recoverable metal in the measured ore category and in the total ore reserves was estimated as follows: [ ] At the 1963 rate of domestic mine production these total reserves would be adequate to provide copper for 62 years, lead for 121 years, and zinc for 42 years. Data also are given for gold, silver, and other coproducts. Reserve estimates greatly exceed those of previous investigations; some prior estimates of copper reserves are included for comparison (table 23). Projections of requirements for base metals indicated the United States will need approximately 45 percent more copper in 1970 and 110 percent more by 1980 than was consumed in 1960; similar projections for lead indicate increases of 20 percent by 1970 and 45 percent by 1980; zinc projections are 40 percent more by 1970 and 90 percent by 1980. Much of the production of gold and silver is a coproduct of base metals recovery and the projected need for the precious metals exceeds all the United States can produce. Some problems of the industry are mentioned. A graphic evaluation of the economic availability of the reserve and potential sources is shown.

At Namdeb, submerged beaches are earmarked for sampling and future mining and various sampling configurations are tested for optimality through the use of spatial simulations. For the creation of these virtual orebodies, basic statistics and variograms are needed, but in this specific instance no data exists from which the necessary parameters can be determined. The best that can be done is to use proxy data from onshore beaches, with adaptations where needed. The reworking of raised beaches during periods of rising and falling sea levels in some cases destroyed the internal beach structures, and it is very difficult to determine the variograms. A method is proposed whereby simulated annealing is used to adjust the sample locations to align the data pertaining to beach crests or cliff lines, thus improving the variogram structure along the shoreline in the direction of the highest geological continuity.

Because power system topographies for surface coal mines are significantly different from those for underground coal mines, the requirements for ground wire monitors for surface systems are somewhat different. This paper analyzes the problems faced by high-voltage ground wire monitors. Based on this analysis, some design requirements for monitors are suggested. Finally, results from laboratory evaluation of some of the commercially available monitors are presented.

Every automatic citizen is an automatic recipient of a miner's right under the present Mining Act (Chapter 195), but this alone does not entitle any automatic citizen to mine for minerals on any land, even his customary group's land. Without complying with requirements of the Mining Act, any automatic citizen who engages in mining solely on the basis of a miner's right would be mining illegally. He would also be engaged in illegal mining if he mines on customary or other non-government land. Even if mining is legally pursued by an automatic citizen, he does not acquire ownership of minerals without first making the required royalty payments to the State.

A method for the detection and analysis of tin in cassiterite ores is discussed. An empirical relationship was established between the tin content of an ore sample and the percentage absorption that this sample produced in a Mossbauer experiment. The time taken to complete an assay with this method is much less than with any of the methods currently in use. The equipment can be adapted readily for use in the field.

For the past six years, the author has made it a priority to attend the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada’s (PDAC) annual conference. This most recent meeting took place March 10-13, 2002in Toronto, Ontario. In the three years since the author’s last PDAC report, the mining industry has undergone a severe trough. Some the industry’s woes included deeply discounted commodity prices, rampant layoffs, mergers, and overall avoidance by the investment community. However, at each of the PDAC conferences, the author has felt a heightened sense of excitement about the mining industry, more so than at other similar gatherings.

NMR360 is developing a suite of chloride-based metals extraction processes, with the first commercial operation scheduled for commissioning late in 2018. It is critical, therefore, that with the introduction of any new technology, that the circuits do not suffer from mechanical failures which will compromise the operation. Although chloride leaching is at atmospheric pressure and relatively low temperature, the main challenge is preventing corrosion, since the high proton activity makes even a small amount of acid behaves as though it were concentrated. An additional challenge in concentrated chloride circuits is the potential for solids precipitation. In this context, therefore, correct valve selection is crucial, and NMR360 has partnered with CGIS to ensure that the Severe Service Valves (SSVs) needed will perform over and above the definitions of the Manufacturers Standardization Society (MSS) of the Valve and Fittings Industry. This paper outlines what the minimum requirements are for SSVs in chloride leaching applications, drawing on five decades of industry experience from one of Canada’s leading valve experts.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted research on the ignition of methane-air mixtures by sparks caused by frictional impact of aluminum alloys on rusted steel at typical coal mine fan speeds. The objectives were to establish the incendivity of aluminum alloys under these conditions, to investigate differences between aluminum alloys, and to evaluate substitute materials for the aluminum-steel combination. With a specially designed apparatus, three commercial aluminum casting alloys and a number of experimental aluminum alloys were tested for incendivity of the frictional impact against rusted steel in flammable methane-air mixtures. All aluminum alloys tested produced some ignitions. Of the experimental alloys, the harder alloys and those containing silicon tended to be more incendive than the others. With the normal experimental conditions, constructional steel, stainless steel, brass, and plastic did not cause ignition of methane-air mixtures in frictional impact against rusted steel. Some ignitions occurred with constructional steel at high speed in more flammable gas mixtures enriched with oxygen. From these findings, it is suggested that constructional material combinations other than the aluminum-steel combustion would minimize this inc endive hazard. A detailed description is given of previous research, and comparison is made with present results where appropriate.

The 3RPORT project is a 5-mile-long, 16-foot-internal-diameter tunnel excavated in hard rock by Slurry TBM in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Two-component grouting can be separated into two core areas of operation: batching and underground operations. This paper addresses the challenges faced and solutions implemented in these fundamental areas. The effects of external factors and their impacts on mix design and batching of grout will be explored. Underground, challenges of monitoring parameters and ensuring a proper mix between the two-components will be discussed, focusing on the adopted technical solutions and considerations to be taken in the design stage of tailskin grout ports.
