This appendix documents the mathematical approach to deriving the components of change presented in this report. The formulation closely follows that contained in Chapter IV of the documentation for the BEA 1977 Input-Output Tables.' The basic elements for the calculations include the "use" matrix (U), the "make" matrix (M), and any of the ten columns of final demand (generically represented by the symbol y). The use matrix contains information about changes in the technological processes of production, while the make matrix describes the nature of secondary product production in each industry. We adhere to BEA conventions in maintaining careful distinctions between commodity output (c) and industry output (x). The industry-by-industry 1-0 tables supplied by NYU for use in this analysis are square matrices, with the number of commodities and the number of industries both equal to 85. The BLS table for 1982 (commodity by industry) was aggregated and adjusted to be consistent with the earlier tables. The three basic steps for estimating components of change proceed as follows for each column of final demand. 1) Calculate the actual change in output of each commodity for each of the four time periods: 1963-72, 1972-77, 1977-82, and 1963-82.

One of the important duties of the Bureau of Mines is to sample and analyze coals and to publish the results of such analyses for the information of producers, consumers, and the general public. Numerous publications containing such analyses have been Issued from time to time. Although the chemical properties of a coal as revealed by its proximate and/or ultimate analysis and heating value aid one considerably in visualizing its probable behavior and in determining its usefulness and value for a specific purpose, they do not furnish complete information. The physical properties of a coal, such as its ability to retain its original form without undue breakage or degradation in size under the various conditions of storage and usage, are also of importance in determining its suitability, technically or economically, for a given purpose.

Cone crushers are used in the mineral, mining, and aggregate industry for fragmentation of rock materials. Control systems for cone crusher settings are widely used to compensate for wear and to protect the machines. The eccentric speed in a cone crusher affects the number of compressions the material is exposed to and thus the particle size distribution of the product. Eccentric speed also affects crusher capacity. However, the speed of the crusher is mostly fixed, because speed changes must be made by shifting pulleys, a process which is quite time-consuming. By applying a frequency converter, which has decreased in cost during recent years, it has become possible to adjust the speed continuously. By also applying mass-flow sensors to the process, the crusher can be run optimally to yield the most sellable products in a given moment. Existing systems normally only protect the machine. The sensors can be mass-flow meters, e.g., conveyor-belt scales. To analyze data from the process and calculate the appropriate value for the speed, an algorithm has been developed. The developed algorithm was tested and evolved at a crushing plant for aggregates that produces around 350 kton a year. The algorithm was implemented in a computer that could communicate with the frequency controller, retrieve data from four mass-flow meters, and also interact with the opera-tor. The computer was reachable over the Internet for the researchers at Chalmers and the algorithm was tuned and improved on-line. The result is a crushing stage that consistently and maximally produces the most desirable product. The performance (yield of required products) increased by 4%. As a bonus, the lifetime of the mantles increased 27% on the evaluated crusher.

AS applied to coal, the term processing is subject to many interpretations. To some it means preparation of coal for the market by mechanical means such as crushing, sizing, washing, or treating with oil or chemicals to eliminate dust or improve combustion quality. To others it means conversion of the coal to other commodities as in carbonization to produce coke and by- products, or to liquids by application of the hydrogenation process. I prefer to classify the various forms of mechanical treatment under the heading of beneficiation and apply the term processing to those methods of treatment that destroy the coal sub- stance through distillation or hydrogenation.

Alabama probably has the most extensive deposits of high-grade flake graphite in the United States and was the largest producer during World War I. Therefore, with the outbreak of World War II, users of flake graphite turned again to Alabama to supply their requirements. Flake graphite is the most important ingredient contained in graphite crucibles used in melting crucible steel and special alloys essential for war purposes. Early in World War II the Army and Navy placed flake graphite on the list of critical war materials. During World War I, when the supply of Ceylon graphite (then in demand) was cut off, large quantities of flake graphite were produced in Alabama, and about 40 mills were built. Most of these were abandoned after the war when imports of the cheaper Madagascar flake (which gradually replaced Ceylon graphite) began to reach this country. With the beginning of World War II, the Madagascar supply was cut off', and consumers were again compelled to look to domestic sources for their supplies. They found only one small mill in operation, that of the Ceylon Graphite Co. in Coosa County, Ala. The Bureau of Mines made a preliminary examination of the Alabama flake graphite deposits in 1940. Samples were taken and tested at the Southern Experiment Station at Tuscaloosa.

It is common practice for underground mine plans to be created sequentially, where results from one planning process form the input data for another. While this is practical for manual methods, computerized optimization techniques should consider an integrated approach to creating the global mine plan. This is because optimizing an individual mine planning process, such as stope layouts, introduces a likelihood of increasing costs or decreasing revenues associated with other areas, such as production scheduling, as harmful decisions must be balanced. Considering the interaction and influence that individual underground mine planning processes have on each other during optimization will provide more profitable results than if these are ignored. Optimization techniques for stope layouts and production scheduling are reviewed. An integer programming model is proposed that allows for either integrated or isolated optimization. Both approaches are separately applied to a block model. The results demonstrate the model?s ability to produce optimal long-term sublevel stoping mine plans and the benefits of using an integrated approach. Many of the gases and vapors used in anesthesia form explosive mixtures with oxygen or air. Sources of ignition for these mixtures always have existed, in operating and anesthetizing areas. When ether was first introduced, candles and gas-lights and coal stoves caused fires and mild explosions of the vapor-air mixtures. Today the chief causes of ignition are electrical. Fires and explosions are still much too frequent; and, because many of the mixtures are rich in oxygen, the explosions sometimes are very violent. Obvious sources of ignition, such as electric-power sparks and arcs in open motors, switches, and receptacles, as well as exposed incandescent wires and hot plates, usually are recognized by hospital personnel and corrected. A source of ignition that is not so obvious to many is static electricity. Until quite recently the presence of this hazard in a large majority of anesthetizing areas was not even suspected. However, numerous explosions -many of them fatal to patients -have been attributed, with good reason, to sparks from static electricity. In this paper the authors present facts to show the prevalence of static electricity in the average hospital anesthetizing area, and the degree to which this easily developed electrical form of energy constitutes an explosion hazard. An effort is made throughout to explain how static electricity behaves, why it is a hazard, and why certain safety measures are needed and recommended. Following the introduction and a short general discussion of static electricity, which incorporates a glossary of pertinent electrical terms, an account is given of inspections and tests made in a number of hospitals. This account includes many suggestions that should be useful to any person who plans to make similar inspections and tests. However, a comparison of materials and equipment used with those described in the report will reveal, in many cases, the potential dangers and obviate the necessity for tests. The hospital work was supplemented by considerable laboratory research designed to determine the spark energies required to ignite anesthetic-gas mixtures and the exact amount of time involved in developing the usual static charges. The results of this research are reported and the implications examined. The paper concludes with a general discussion of static and related hazards in anesthetizing areas and of the most urgent preventative measures.

Silver and gold are the principal metals in the study area; they occur in quartz veins or silicified portions of shear zones. In some deposits, lead, antimony, zinc, and molybdenum are associated with gold and silver. A uranium-bearing buried stream channel lies near the southern boundary. Since 1850, more than 300 lode claims and relocations have been recorded mainly in the southeast corner of the study area (fig. 1). Complete mine production records are not available; however Clark (1977, p. 28) reported less than $300,000 of gold and silver were produced, mainly from the Exchequer, IXL, and Pennsylvania Mines. Other mines in the area probably yielded are before 1900, but early records are not available.

New technology for on-line particle size analysis of mineral slurries has opened up new applications for particle size measurement. In some cases the particle size distribution of the final concentrate is an important quality issue. This paper discusses established on-line particle size analysis technologies and presents experiences on the use of a new technique employing laser diffraction in several minerals processing operations. The main innovations in the new instrument are a simple dilution system and multiple scattering correction algorithm, which allows wide solids content variations of diluted sample in the measurement cell. Representative sample for laser measurement is produced by a simple and reliable dilution system. The applications discussed are; Blaine number measurement of Fe concentrate before pelletizing, grinding of variable batches of ore and paste thickener control.

Geologic, geotechnical and hydrologic studies were performed for the design of 115 deep, large diameter drilled shaft reinforced concrete foundations (6 to 12 feet) to support tall steel monopoles for a new 13-mile long 230/69kV transmission line in southwestern Arizona. The subsurface conditions along the alignment posed a wide range of challenges for performing investigation and design studies. These conditions include saturated, loose granular flood plain deposits with generally low lateral capacity, potential ground loss up to 23 feet due to occasional river flow (scour and embankment loss), liquefaction impacts from nearby active fault seismicity that can generate magnitude 6.5-7.0 earthquakes, and unsaturated alluvial and eolian sand-dominated soils to full depth with low lateral capacity. All conditions will require significantly deeper than normal foundation embedment (depth ranging from 22 to 77 feet) and will present construction difficulty due to ground instability from groundwater and dry soil sloughing. A phased investigation was performed to accurately characterize the conditions for design and construction, and included performing a review of existing data, detailed field geologic reconnaissance, a limited number of standard exploratory borings (limited access), seismic cone penetrometer soundings (SCPT) in saturated soils to better understand liquefaction and strength loss potential, and hydrologic analyses to estimate scour/ground loss potential. This paper describes the site conditions, presents details on the investigation team’s approach, documents findings in relation to deep foundation analysis and design, and discusses recommendations for foundation construction to help in reducing risk.

The effect of polyelectrolyte flocculants on the de-watering of a tailing suspension of very fine clay was investigated.Sedimentation and filtration experiments were carried out in the labqratory to characterise the de-watering properties of the tailing. The results were used to calculate the effect of flocculant additions on the drainage and vaporation components of the de-watering of a clay suspension ponded on to a sand drainage bed.A flocculant increased the drainage rate, but decreased the volume of water that could be removed by drainage leaving more water to be lost by evaporation.The sorptivity values measured in the laboratory were used in the de-watering equation previously established for the tailing to estimate the effect of flocculant additions on the time required to de-water the suspension from 18.2 to 60 per cent solids w/w. The calculated de-watering times were found to increase or decrease depending on the volume of water removed by drainage and the prevailing evaporation rate.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a HCI-02 leaching procedure to recover Cu, Ni, and Co from a low-grade bulk sulfide flotation concentrate prepared from the Duluth gabbro complex. Since the Duluth gabbro complex is the largest known and unexploited Ni resource in the United States, the development of options for extracting the metal values from the flotation concentrate of this domestic resource is necessary. Conditions were determined for producing a pregnant solution low in Fe to facilitate recovery of the metal values. Leaching experiments were conducted at 15 pct solids, 1000 to 1200 C, 0.2 to 0.3 g HCI per gram concentrate in a 50-gal reactor pressurized to 50 pSig with 02. Base metal extractions from the concentrate were, in percent, 90 to 92 Cu, 99 Ni, 97 to 99 Co, and 0.1 .Fe. Precious metals extractions were erratic and unpredictable; at best their extractions were, in percent, 55 Au, 90 Ag, 40 Pt, and 45 Pd. The reaction time at 1200 C was 0.5 h. The use of compressed air instead of 02 as the oxidant was also investigated. Solvent extraction using LIX 622 was used to remove Cu from the pregnant solution. Cementation on Cu was tested for precious metals recovery, while sulfide precipitation was used to produce a Ni-Co product. A conceptual flowsheet for treating the Duluth gabbro concentrate is proposed.

The objective of this study is to assess the impact of different reagents, such as limestone, lime, magnesium oxide, and sodium hydroxide, in experiments carried out in the single purification step and in two consecutive purification steps by raising the pH of a rare earth sulfuric liquor with the aim to remove or reduce the impurity concentrations in the rare earth sulfuric liquor. The choice for the best purification condition was made based on the minimum loss of rare earth elements (REEs), reagent consumption, and residue generation. The exploratory experiments show that it takes place in the two consecutive purification steps, the first one consists in dosing the limestone pulp until it reaches a pH of 3.5 followed by an addition of a lime pulp reaching a pH of 5.0. Under this condition, the results were a total removal of Fe3+, PO4 3− , and Th4+ ions and a reduction of 99%, 87%, and 37% w/w in the Al3+, UO2 2+, and SO4 2− concentrations, respectively, in the purified rare earth liquor. Furthermore, the lowest REE losses (8.3% w/w) and reagent consumption (4.3 kg/m3 ) and also a low residue generation (7.5 kg/m3 ) were observed in this condition. Despite reaching similar results regarding impurity removal, the experiments done with the addition of limestone, lime, magnesium oxide pulps, and sodium hydroxide solution in the single purification step, where the pH was raised to 5.0, presented higher REE losses (64.9%, 42.5%, 44.8%, and 60.9% w/w, respectively) and a higher residue generation (43.2, 25.1, 11.1, and 13.6 kg/m3 , respectively). This occurred due to the co-precipitation of salts containing rare earth elements in their composition. The experiments conducted with limestone, lime, and MgO resulted in a higher consumption of reagents, while the same result was observed when NaOH was used (4.3 kg/m3 ). In the experiments carried out with the addition of magnesium oxide and sodium hydroxide, the respective purified rare earth liquors presented a high concentration of magnesium, sulfate, or sodium, which could impact the quality of the marketable rare earth salts, whereas the salts obtained under the best condition observed in this study seem to be amenable for use as raw material in an attempt to obtain rare earth products with an acceptable chemical quality.

Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant, which produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment and recover the ore.The E48 extraction level is located approximately 581 m below surface and consists of ten extraction drives and 214 drawpoints. Several stress measurements carried out at various levels in both E26 and E48 indicated a low underground regional stress environment and a low to moderate stress state in the E48 orebody. The E48 block used a post undercut strategy that was initiated in 2009, with production commencing in September 2010 and cave-through to the surface occurring approximately four months later in January 2011. Changes to the cut-off grade and fixed prices meant that Northparkes was able to develop an additional two drives to the north of the existing cave and one additional drive to the south. Modelling of the cavability of the additional drives indicated that the cave would not readily propagate to sufficient height of draw to mobilise the ore and tended to arch over to the existing cave shape. Based on modelling and a desire to reduce the risk of the project, preconditioning was adopted. Along with the requirement of safely hydrofracturing an active cave, a measure of the success of the preconditioning was desired. Anatolia Minerals Development Limited (AMDL) is constructing the Çöpler Gold Project in eastern Turkey and commenced mining in the fourth quarter of 2009 with gold production scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2010. The project is a 15,500 tonnes/day oxide heap leach with three-stage crushing, agglomeration, carbon adsorption and electrowinning for final metal recovery. Leach solution copper levels are expected to be relatively low during the first two years of production but will increase in later years due to higher copper content in the mined and processed ore. Over the mine life approximately 40 million tones of ore will be placed on the leach pad, which will contain about 35,000 tonnes of copper. Metallurgical testing indicates copper extraction will vary by ore type and, if controls are not implemented, may lead to copper levels exceeding 1,000 mg/L in pregnant solution. High copper levels in leach solution have the deleterious effect of increasing cyanide consumption and potentially overwhelming the ability of the carbon circuit to effectively adsorb the principal economic metals, which in this case are gold and silver. Using data obtained from laboratory leach column testwork, the heap leach facility was modeled using METSIM process simulation software to estimate the build-up of copper in leach solution over the mine life. Laboratory testwork was also performed to evaluate process conditions for treating a portion of pregnant leach solution via sulfide addition to precipitate saleable copper as copper sulfide (Cu2S).

The waste-heat boiler is used within the Sulphide flash smelting process as the main dust and energy recovery unit. The large volume of off-gas discharged from the flash smelter is at a very high temperature (1350°C) and contains a significant dust load that subjects the downstream waste-heat boiler to tough and demanding conditions. The boiler cavity is especially prone to dust accretions, fouling, and corrosion caused by accumulation of molten particles and precipitation of sulphuric acid. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is applied within a qualitative study to model the flow and heat transfer distribution throughout the waste-heat boiler. The commercial CFD package, Fluent 6.2.16, was applied to a modified waste-heat boiler (23 m ×11 m ×5.4 m) within the Outokumpu flash smelting process. This investigation focuses on the geometric modifications to the typical boiler design, which includes elevation of the ceiling, placement of flow-obstructing baffles and radiation plates parallel within the flow path. Also investigated were various boiler operating conditions such as the circulation of process off-gas, air leakage from the dust discharging hoppers and variation in inlet gas composition. The geometric modifications had the desired effect of increasing the volumetric utilization and therefore enhancing heat transfer between the boiler surface and the gas stream and dust segregation. Introducing circulated off-gas at a rate of 20 m/s and at a 45° angle to the front of the waste boiler further enhanced cooling while reducing the high impact of the furnace-uptake gas-stream on the boiler ceiling. The placement of radiation plates was found to be very effective in enhancing the heat transfer surface and distributing gas flow within the boiler. The development of information concerning mesothelioma in South Africa started with the 1959 finding of Dr. J. Christopher Wagner of cases of mesothelioma in persons living in the vicinity or working in crocidolite mines in Cape Province. After more than 40 years, the data from South Africa now provide important insights into the differences in mesothelioma risk associated with different asbestos fiber-types. Three case series reports and one analytical report were reviewed in this session. In total, information on 504 proven cases was presented. There were 28% of cases arising from occupational exposure in mining, 35% from non-mining occupations, 23% from environmental exposures; 14% where no exposure was established and 9% where the exposure was unknown. Among the 129 cases for which occupational exposure and asbestos fiber-type were established, 115 cases were associated with occupational exposure to Cape crocidolite; 1 case associated with occupational exposure to Transvaal crocidolite and 9 cases with occupational exposure to amosite (grunerite asbestos) and 4 cases with occupational exposure to mixed fiber-types. There were no cases associated with chrysotile asbestos. There were 33 cases of environmental mesothelioma linked to Cape crocidolite exposure and 2 to exposure to amosite and crocidolite but none to Transvaal amosite alone or to chrysotile. The evidence shows that amosite is capable of causing mesothelioma but that the major risk in South Africa is associated with Cape crocidolite.

As part of the Federal Bureau of Mines project to develop new or improved materials for metallurgical furnace applications, the Tuscaloosa (Ala.) Research Center has conducted research to develop a reproducible laboratory test for evaluating the resistance of refractories to molten slags. Tests were conducted with a slag representative of slag used to produce mineral wool. A rotating cylindrical furnace was lined with the brick being tested, and it was operated at temperatures up to 1,660° C for periods ranging from 8 to 32 hours. The effects of such variables as slag temperature, rotational velocity, charge rate, and contact time on refractory erosion were determined. The research demonstrated the reproducibility of the test procedure developed.

Analysis of 62 samples show that the sulphides throughout the igneous stratigraphy have a magmatic signature, with the exception of the uppermost gabbros and the lowermost basal thrust talc-carbonate lithologies. Mean delta-34S values for whole-rock samples from harzburgites, dunite pods in harzburgite, crustal dunites and wehrlites, the main and high-level pyroxenites and gabbros suggest that the primary sulphides derived their sulphur from a magmatic source enriched in 34S. This finding is compatible with the proposed origin of the ophiolite above a subduction zone. Values for pyrite mineralisation in the uppermost part of the gabbros are thought to result from precipitation from a seawater-derived fluid, while isotopically light sulphur in the basal thrust could have been introduced from underlying metasediments. "A reliable supply of non-energy raw materials is a precondition for the functioning of the European economy. In line with its importance, the issue of raw materials supply has become more prominent in the past years, especially owing to turbulent raw material markets. However, these turbulences are not due to depletion of the geological resources but to a missmatch of (expected) supply and (expected) demand, with several interacting factors influencing the markets both from the supply as well as from the demand side. A recent evaluation, published in June 2010 within the framework of the EU Raw Materials Initiative, sought to bring together these two sides of raw material markets and asked the question "which raw materials are critical for the EU?" Herein we present the methodology used by the Ad-hoc Working Group on Defining Critical Raw Materials and the results obtained, complemented by results from the study "Raw Materials for Emerging Technologies"."
