The report covers several aspects of mine safety ground systems, primarily for underground coal mines. The design of a combined ground fault-ground check monitoring system is presented. An analysis is made of grounding systems for dc shuttle cars. Complete resistance data and results of physical inspections of self-salting ground rods are presented. A detailed resistance and economic analysis is presented for the use of composite materials for building inexpensive and effective ground beds in high-resistivity areas. The desireability of penetrating the coal seam with a borehole safety ground is investigated. A report is made of a Mine Substation Grounding and Bonding Workshop.

This paper, which describes the practice of milling custom ore, in addition to that produced under company and lease operations in the Tom Reed mines, is one of a series 'being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. "Despite being a field of study that requires practical knowledge and experience, mining engineering education follows the same pattern in most mining universities around the world, consisting of theoretical courses and laboratory-based practical modules (Mischo, 2015). The possibility of having practical training in real mining conditions on actual mine sites or processing plants is limited, while the only contact that undergraduate students have with mining operations during their time of study is usually through shorttime internships or visits in the context of educational trips. Real integration between universities and the mining industry may be scarce, which does not help students to observe the actual processes and thus understand the whole picture of mining operations.Indirect practical training is now possible since that technology is shifting from mechanical to digital, and the use of virtual reality — in the context of Mining 4.0 — can provide additional experience to the learning process. However, virtual reality is limited to the visual impression and is also limited in actions (Binder et al., 2018). In any case, when there is not a proper pragmatic view of how the different disciplines link to each other, especially if there is a lack of communication, unfortunately the results could be seen at a later stage in the mines as a poor performance of professionals and workers.Another major challenge for educating specialists in the mining sector is that experimental mines suitable for practical education, where the skills and knowhow could be developed and/or enhanced, are rare worldwide. Such research and educational (R&E) facilities are practically former metal ore mines that have been transformed into experimental sites. Besides being limited in number, not all facilities of this kind serve both a research and educational purpose.An early example of asolely experimental mines is the Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Mine site operated by LKAB in Sweden, where systematic research on rock mechanics and mining engineering was successfully carried out in the 1980s. As a result, the developed underground mining technology was applied in LKAB’s mines at a later stage. There have also been research mines within collieries such as the former Lake Macquarie Mine at New South Wales in Australia and the Zeche Tremonia Mine in Germany), but these are no longer in operation (Mischo, 2015)."

The stoichiometry and kinetics of the hydrothermal reaction of enargite in copper sulphate solutions was investigated in the range 140–300 °C, and particle size under 15 and 50 μm. The stoichiometric experiment was performed at 300 °C, using one gram of sample (96% enargite, 4% tennantite) and 100 mL of copper sulphate solution (10 gpl) at 1.2 pH. Enargite reacted completely after 80 min. A solid product was obtained and characterized by XRD. The main product was chalcocite (M) and some traces of djurleite and chalcocite (Q). Tennantite did not react under these conditions. The kinetic experiments were conducted at 140 °C, 190 °C, 250 °C and 300 °C. From fitted data and Arrhenius equation the calculated activation energy (Ea) was 51 kJ/mol. According to the hydrothermal transformations studied, the reactivity of different phases found in the copper concentrates was bornite > chalcopyrite > covellite > sphalerite > pyrite > enargite > tennantite.

This circular presents results of a survey conducted by the Bureau of Mines to ascertain the extent to which dust-control practices are employed in the coal-mining industry. This survey was initiated because of increasing realization of the possible harmful effects of the inhalation of dust upon the health of coal-mine workers and the advent, during recent years, of new types of mining machinery and new mining methods that may have a direct effect upon the extent of exposure to airborne dust experienced by persons mining coal. Anthracite Mines The survey covered 169 anthracite mines that were operating from November 1, 1953, to July 1, 1954. It showed that large mines employing more than 100 men were doing most to control dust produced during mining.

Tungsten alloys with high-temperature strength properties, comparable to the best of alloys recently developed by others, were produced by a new process called here the oxyreaction process. The process involved additions of a powder of a reactive metal compound, ZrN, ZrW2, or HfW2, to a base metal powder, tungsten, which contained some oxygen. The powders were blended, compacted, sintered, and extruded. During sintering, diffusion and internal oxidation occurred to produce reactive-metal oxide particles and solid solutions. A dispersion of oxide particles could be precipitated by heat treating. The oxyreaction process circumvents many of the agglomerating and coarsening problems encountered in the current methods for dispersing a stable oxide in a metal. Oxyreaction strengthening results from solid-solution strengthening and from dispersion strengthening produced by the reactive metal and its oxides. At a test temperature of 1,650° C, the alloys prepared from WW, had tensile strengths up to 70,000 psi and stress-rupture lives up to 142 hr at 10,000 psi stress; the alloys prepared from ZrN powders had tensile strengths up to 80,000 psi and stress-rupture lives up to 27 hr at 10,000 psi stress. Tensile strengthening in the alloys was attributed to Zr in solid solution or to Zr-O-W structures too small to be observed in an electron microscope replica. Stress-rupture life was attributed to a dispersion of submicron Zr02 particles which precipitated and grew to 0.05-to 0.2-micron size during the test. Tensile strengthening and stress-rupture life were dependent upon both the zirconium and oxygen contents with the maximum occurring at roughly 0.9 atomic pot Zr and 0.9 atomic pot 0. Studies of the details of the oxyreaction process were made on the W-ZrW2 alloys and three general steps were determined: (1) The reaction of 0 in tungsten powder with ZrW2 to form relatively large Zr02 particles; (2) the dissolution of remaining ZrW2 into the W matrix and partial internal oxidation to form ultrafine but sparse zirconium oxide particles and possibly to establish Zr-O-W structures; (3) the development of ultrafine Zr02 particles during high-temperature aging.

Paper 1?South African experience with asbestos-related environmental mesothelioma: Is fiber type important? Neil White, Gill Nelson, Jill Murray The purpose of this review was to illustrate the importance of the type of asbestos in environmental mesothelioma. South Africa is a logical place to assess fiber type. The three major types of asbestos (crocidolite, amosite and chrysotile) were mined (all asbestos mining stopped in 2002) in South Africa. The association between asbestos and mesothelioma was discovered in South Africa. The occupational literature indicates high mesotheliomagenic potential for crocidolite, less for amosite and less still for chrysotile. Since South Africa has been a major source of crocidolite, relatively high rates of mesothelioma in the mining population is not surprising. High rates of mesothelioma due to environmental exposure is surprising, except perhaps when the authors? point out potential sources for community exposures (e.g., mine tailings used for road surfacing, golf courses, brick and plaster making; insulation in residential ceilings; children playing on fiber-rich waste rock). The authors? reviewed four studies reporting on mesothelioma cases and their sources of exposure and fiber type. Overall 23% of the known cases were attributed to the environmental (not occupational) exposure and about 90% were due to crocidolite asbestos. The proportion of environmental mesothelioma is considerably higher than in Western Australia where crocidolite is also mined. There the overall rate of environmental mesothelioma is about 6% (and less than 1% from residence in a crocidolite mining area).

The use of liquid hydrogen as a high-energy fuel introduces numerous hazards not ordinarily associated with the use of other more conventional fuels. These hazards are attributable to the unique properties of hydrogen in the liquid and gas states (table 1). Since little work has been conducted on explosion and related hazards of cryogenic fuels, a research program was undertaken to obtain basic data on such dangers for hydrogen and other combustibles under these conditions. These data were used to outline emergency procedures for protecting personnel and equipment when an accidental spillage of liquid hydrogen occurs and to establish a quantity-distance table for the storage of this fuel. The vaporization of liquid hydrogen from a surface is treated as a prob¬lem in heat transfer theory. Two extreme cases are briefly considered: (1) The transfer of heat occurs at constant temperature drop between, the boiling liquid and the hot surface, and (2) the transfer of heat is limited by the rate at which it can flow to the surface from a hot insulating medium. The available data indicate that the former case (1) is applicable when vaporizing from a conducting surface and, initially, when vaporizing from an insulating medium; the latter case (2) is applicable after initial flash vaporization has occurred from the insulating medium. The vaporization rate determines in part the rate at which flammable hydrogen vapor-air mixtures are formed above a spill area. However, the rates at which heat is transferred to the vapor, and air is brought in contact with it also are of importance. Accordingly, the distribution of flammable mixtures above a spill area was determined experimentally. In general, flammable mixtures were found to be both above and within the visible vapor cloud.

Les dykes tant de porphyre feldspathique quartzifére que ceux de prophyre feldspathique sont d'affinité calco-alcaline: Zr 83 ppm, Sr 500 ppm et P2O5j 0.10%.Le gisement de 10 mine 2 est filonien: veines subhorizontales (""flats "") surtout et veines sub-verticales dans des zones de cisaillement. Le dernier réajustement structural de direction de compression nord-sud a broyé le quartz des veines existant es et rendu possible leur minéralisation. Les veines minéralisées contiennent du quartz, de la tourmaline, de la calcite avec des traces de scheelite, de pyrite et d'or; elles sont bordées par de minces (2 à 20 cm) bordures d'altération où l'on retrouve un enrichissement en carbonate, paragonite, apatite, rutile, saphène et zircon et où les phases ferromagnésiennes sont disparues. In producing feed for a lead blast furnace, concentrates analyzing 70 to 80 pct Pb are sintered to produce a physically acceptable low-sulfur product which contains only about 50 pct Pb. Mixtures of PbS with varying amounts of SiO2, CaO, Fe 20., and ZnS were heated in an oxidizing atmosphere at 1,000° C; the products were cooled and examined to determine the problems involved in producing sinter with substantially higher lead levels. Microscopic and electron microprobe studies of the above products as well as experimental and commercial sinters indicate that sinters consist essentially of lead silicates, lead-zinc silicate, calcium zinc silicate, and spinel (ferrite). Lead oxide and lead sulfate areas appear to result from insufficient mixing of the materials prior to sintering. The data give an insight into the process and show that sintering results from a complex interaction of all constituents and that sintering is not simply a matter of diluting the mixture to control the oxidation of lead sulfide.

The Witwatersrand Basin contains by far the most gold ever found, and has hosted mining from its discovery in 1886 to the present. For many years, South Africa was the world’s largest producerof gold, nearly all of which came from the Witwatersrand. Since 2000, South Africa has fallen back several positions because of declining gold output. There are many complex and varied reasons for this; however, declining gold resources in the Witwatersrand Basin are not one of them. As far as the author knows, there are no qualified estimates in the literature of gold remaining in the Witwatersrand Basin. This paper collects mining data from several sources and then, using elementary gold accounting and error analysis, attempts to estimate the amount of gold remaining in the Witwatersrand Basin. It includes gold underground in existing and defunct mines, in evaluated ore resources, and dumps. Compiled data from 1887 to 2019 shows that 50 200 t of gold were produced by Witwatersrand mines, while it is estimated that a further 48 100 t remainunderground, both within and outside of mine leases, a further 1 600 t on the surface in tailings,and an unknown amount in rock dumps. Nearly all of this gold will remain inaccessible with current mining methods, and major technical developments in mining will be necessary before any of the gold can be categorized as a code-compliant resource or reserve. To win this prize, the mining industry will have to rethink its approach to mining, both in old mining leases and in the unexploited ground. It will also have to find effective means of preventing gold theft and informal mining, which are on the rise.

An extensive suite of elements are routinely assayed on all resource drill core samples to assist in deposit scale resource definition, local mine scale delineation of ore zones, and ore characterisation for the planning and scheduling of mining and processing of ores at Olympic Dam. This paper discusses a deposit scale geochemical relation that can be used by mine geologists to find more high-grade ore at the local mine area scale at Olympic Dam.A 3D grade shell representing 0.8 per cent Cu was created for a mine area using drill hole assay data. This defined the geometry of the ore zone. The Cu-grade shell was then overlain onto the existing resource block model to evaluate the relationships between the Cu-grade shell, copper and other elements. The strongest correlation was between copper and manganese. The block model showed a dramatic decrease in the concentration of manganese just below the below the Cu-grade shell.Several drill holes that intersected the Cu-grade shell were selected to evaluate the copper manganese relation at the drill hole scale. As expected, the individual drill holes displayed a strong inverse relation between copper and manganese. A geochemical footwall was then modelled representing 0.1 wt per cent Mn. Using both the Cu– and Mn-grade shells, several drill holes were designed/drilled and all hit high-grade copper.For the vast majority of the deposit the inverse relation between copper and manganese is valid; however, in areas with intense chlorite alteration (related to amounts of mafic to ultramafic rocks) this relation is not as strong, due to increased manganese in the rock mass. Even though using the copper manganese relation as a drill targeting method was not always as reliable in a few small areas of the deposit, it demonstrates the value of using existing assay data integrated with the resource block model to discover local mine scale geochemical relationships which can be used to more effectively design drill holes to discover high-grade ore at Olympic Dam.CITATION:Griffith, J and Ehrig, K, 2017. From 1984 through 1987, the Bureau of Mines investigated numerous prospects and new discoveries of columbium, rare-earth elements (REE), uranium, zirconium, and other metals associated with the multi-phased peralkaline granite at Bokan Mountain, southeastern Alaska. This report summarizes the mineral evaluations and estimates indicated and inferred resources for those prospects containing significant tonnage and grade. A total of approximately 96.2 MM lb Cb205 (43 pct of the tonnage at a grade exceeding 0.125 pct Cb205), and 11.8 MM lb U308, 27.9 MM lb Th02, 133.0 MM lb Y203, 637.6 MM lb ZrO2, and 241 MM lb REO are estimated to be contained within nine deposits totalling 37.8 million tons (at least 80 pct of resource tonnage also exceeds 0.5 pct Y203 + REO). Generally, half of the REO content is composed of the heavy yttrium subgroup. Several deposits also contain beryllium and tantalum; 2.1 MM lb of Ta205 and 8.9 MM lbs of BeO were estimated. These estimates would likely be substantially increased with additional exploration. Four deposit types were investigated; shear zones and fracture-related deposits, pegmatites, mineralized dikes, and placers. Mineralized dikes contain most of the beryllium, columbium, tantalum, yttrium, zirconium, and REE resources, whereas shear zones and fracture-related deposits (Ross-Adams mine) contain the principal of the uranium resource. Pegmatites are similarly mineralized as are dike deposits, and contain low levels of gold. Placer potential is suggested, but no deposits were found.

Selection of the best possible truck type (model) is of crucial importance for the mine decision-makers. In this paper, authors contribute to the body of knowledge by developing a novel methodology for the selection of mining truck. Both the Coefficient of Technical Level (CTL) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methods were used in this study. The CTL represents a mathematical function which takes into consideration the interrelations among the main technical parameters of mining trucks. The authors developed a hierarchical structure where both attribute categories and their importance, i.e. priority or weight in the selection process were determined. For each category, a number of sub-attributes and their priorities were assigned, and a pairwise comparison among them was performed using the AHP method. In the final part of the study, the CTL was integrated into the AHP and represents a holistic approach in the selection of mining trucks. A case study on 180 tonnes truck category offered by five manufacturers was carried out. A sensitivity study of obtained results was also performed indicating a very stable solution. The methodology presented in this paper may be used by mining operators to help in the selection of a specific type when acquiring a new truck. It may also be used by equipment manufacturers to help in analysis of potential benefits of envisaged modifications concerning an existing truck type and/or development of a new type.

ABSTRACT It has been suggested that effective disaster prevention and response in mining requires that elements of emergency management be incorporated into everyday operations, planning, and decision-making, much in the same way that the industry approaches routine risk management. Since Congress passed the MINER Act in 2006, the newly mandated structural and technological advancements in mine emergency response preparation have been made and are apparent, but measureable improvement in mineworker emergency preparedness is difficult to ascertain. To begin exploring whether measurable indicators of mine workforce preparedness can or should be addressed within a risk management framework, NIOSH researchers examined the datasets from two separate research efforts—one which measured the organizational safety climate and self-reported safety performance, and the other which measured individuals’ perceptions of their own self-escape competency. INTRODUCTION In response to the mine disasters in 2006, the United States Congress passed the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act), which strengthened existing regulations [30 CFR, Part 48] and introduced new provisions to improve mine emergency response. Since that time, new technological and structural features, such as mandated redundant communication systems, personnel tracking systems, and lifelines in primary and secondary escapeways, have been installed in underground coal mines across the country. Additionally, mine operators are required to develop emergency response plans, provide adequate supplies of breathable air throughout the mine, provide more frequent and realistic expectations training, and are required to immediately notify the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in the event of an accident. While the structural and technological advancements in emergency preparedness are readily observable and easily measured, levels of individual mineworker preparedness remain difficult to assess. There is a general consensus that deficiencies in competence in the non-routine tasks required for individual miners to effectively respond to a mine emergency likely remain (e.g., National Research Council [NRC], 2013), and NIOSH research continues address this concern (Haas, et al., 2015; Hoebbel et al., 2018). To maximize an operation’s capacity to effectively prevent disasters and/or respond to emergency events, it has been suggested that individual and emergency management efforts be incorporated into everyday operations, planning, and decision-making in much the same way organizations manage routine risks to health and safety (Haddow et al., 2017). To the authors’ knowledge, the mindful intersection of routine risk management policies and practices and emergency prevention and response readiness have yet to be empirically studied within the mining industry.

The mining industry continues to have major disasters (Bingham Canyon, Pike River, Upper Big Branch, Mount Polley and Samarco), which often have a devastating effect on the enterprise, in terms of personnel deaths and injuries, environmental destruction, and financial and reputational loss. These disasters are not imposed from outside the business or organisation, they are almost always a function of loss of control of the management of the organisation’s critical assets and processes that they contain or to which they are exposed.Asset integrity is discussed as an effective response to business risks in order to mitigate, control and recover from loss scenarios that could expose a mining operation to significant property damage and business interruption, or even total loss. Vital to this process is the identification and control of risks to critical assets. Components of a critical asset assurance program are presented for discussion.Formal risk assessment has a longer history in industries other than mining, eg petrochemical, nuclear, military, aviation and space industries. Risk assessment is a structured, proactive approach to understanding and improving risks, as opposed to a reactive ‘fix-it-when-it-breaks’ mentality. Risk assessment techniques were triggered by major public disasters, such as the Flixborough chemical plant disaster (1973), Three Mile Island nuclear plant event (1979) and others.Today, most industries see risk assessment as an inherent part of their business, but do mining sites capture business risks that are related to major loss scenarios, which could have a significant impact on the operation?Does your risk assessment process:- involve a team having the right skill set so that the discussion is both stimulated and technically sound?- use generic assessment when a site-specific assessment is needed?- fail to consider all possible outcomes, including maximum foreseeable loss (MFL)?- fail to identify all hazards and controls associated with a particular activity?- fail to monitor controls effectively?This paper addresses the issues identified by these questions and provides some direction for developing a risk management process where business risk associated with critical asset integrity is integrated with other business and safety and health risk processes to provide a robust method for managing your business. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, investigated recovery of concentrates containing tin, tantalum, and niobium from the Kougarok deposit on the Seward Peninsula, AK. To date, 25 million lb of tin has been delineated in occurrences containing 0.36 to 1.32 pct Sn, and the resource potential is estimated to be as high as 25 million short tons at average grades of 0.75 pct Sn, 0.025 pct Ta, and 0,025 pct Nb. Deslimed ore was concentrated to 54 pct Sn, 0.3 pct Ta, and 0.3 pct Nb, with recoveries of 74 pct Sn and 44 pct Ta/Nb using a Humphrey's* spiral followed by a Deister shaking table. Tin values in the slimes were upgraded to a 5-pct-Sn concentrate using a Bartles-Mozley separator followed by flotation. The 5- pct-Sn was further upgraded by fuming to give a concentrate containing approximately 60 pct Sn. The recovery of the two products combined was 80 pct Sn and 46 pct Ta/Nb, A flowsheet with mill-design parameters resulted from the metallurgical testing. An economic analysis was made based on the proposed process.

This Bureau of Mines report is a reference manual of procedures used by the Bureau's Twin Cities Mining Research Center for obtaining rock properties. Included in the report are discussions on the usage of each property, descriptions of the general test methods for obtaining the properties, and instructions for performing the tests. The Instructions embrace details of the specimen configuration, test apparatus, test procedure, test conditions, and calculations needed to achieve satisfactory results. Although the procedures presented in this reference manual generally conform to recommendations of the ASTM Administrative Committee on Standards, they are not purported to be standards.

This report on tungsten in Ouray, San Juan, and San Miguel Counties, Colo., is one of a series describing results of studies on the tungsten potentialities in Region III, Bureau of Mines. The San Juan tungsten deposits occur in an area of 250 square miles, centering near the common corner of Ouray, San Juan, and San Miguel Counties (fig. 1). Field work supporting these studies was done in May 1954. Bureau of Mines reports prepared from investigations made during World War II and under the Defense Production Act of 1950 were reviewed.

IN the opencut iron mines of the Mesabi Range in Minnesota, the trend in mining is in the development of mining equipment and mining methods which will move surface overburden and ore-bearing materials with less labor and at a cheaper cost. This is a must for most of the independent operators. The trend is toward deeper stripping, longer and steeper hauls, and the necessity of moving a total of from three to five or six tons of overburden and ore material for each ton of shipping-grade ore produced. This naturally calls for greater production, with larger shovels, or draglines. cheaper drilling and blasting costs through the drilling of larger-diameter blastholes, and cheaper haulage through the use of trucks of larger capacity and more extensive use of belt-conveyor systems. This trend is notable both in stripping and mining.
