In flotation, particulate materials are separated by controlling the hydrophobicity of the particles using appropriate collectors. In this regard, contact angle (?) is the most important process variable. However, the flotation models used in industry today do not include ? as a parameter. As result, flotation circuits are designed based on the first-order flotation rate constants (k) determined from laboratory experiments. A problem with this approach is that laboratory experiments usually give substantially higher k values than achievable in full-scale operations, which makes it difficult to use the model for plant design. In the present work, we have developed a model from first principles using both surface chemistry and hydrodynamic parameters, such as ?, ?-potentials, surface tension (?), particle size, energy dissipation rate, etc. The basic approach is similar to the one developed previously for bubble-particle interactions under laminar flow conditions (Yoon and Mao, J. Colloid and Interface Science, 181, 61, 1996) except that the model parameters have been modified by considering the turbulence in a flotation cell. In addition, the model describes the recovery processes in froth phase, including bubble-coarsening due to coalescence. Based on this model, we have developed a computer simulator (FlotSim) that can be used to design flotation circuits from the mineralogical (or liberation) data on the feed and the hydrodynamic characteristics of a flotation machine. Since the model is dynamic, it can also be used for process control. Further, the simulator has predictive capacity as it is based on a first-principles model. The model-based simulator has been validated in a carefully controlled bench-scale flotation experiments. The complexity of the reduction process combined with the fact that under different experimental conditions the controlling stage for the reaction may not necessarily be the same, has led experimenters in this field to a wide diversity of opinion regarding the reaction mecl1anism. As a rule, each investigation has been restricted to the study of one or two variables over a comparative]~• narrow range of experimental conditions, and consequently, it be-comes necessary to examine the significance of each published work in the light of the results of other experimenters in the field.

The use of an integrated software package to simulate and optimize the performance of mineral processing circuits is illustrated by three examples. Each represents application of the software and associated techniques to optimization of an existing plant. In the first example, a South-western U. S. copper company employs the method to simulate and improve performance in crushing, screening and SAG milling. A second copper producer evaluates equipment changes and flowsheet alternatives in a closed-circuit ball mill-cyclone operation. A Southeastern U. S. aluminum refinery optimizes performance of a dry milling and classification circuit for production of carbon particles used in anode casting. Graphical and tabular data describe the circuits simulated and the results achieved in each example.

The original manuscript of section 2 of this series of miners' circulars devoted to accident prevention in bituminous-coal mines was completed in September 1944. At that time roof bolting had been tried with some success in the lead-mining district of south-eastern Missouri, but information on the subject was so fragmentary that it was not included as a method of roof support. References to roof support in bituminous-coal mines, therefore, were confined almost entirely to conventional timbering methods. In 1947 the Bureau instituted a research program and intensive study of the general problem of roof control, which emphasized roof-bolt application. The rapid increase in mechanized mining following the close of World War II provided the impetus for the Bureau's roof-control investigations, because the vertical supports used with conventional timber restricted the maneuverability of mechanical face equipment, and the industry wanted to explore every possible method of eliminating interference with the production cycle to gain full advantage of mechanized mining. Moreover, the accidental dislodgment of vertical supports greatly increased the roof-fall hazard. As roof falls have killed and seriously injured more mine workmen every year than any other cause or classification of injury since records have been kept, the Bureau assumed this investigative leadership with the prime objective of substantially reducing the annual toll from falls of roof, including falls of rib and face.

THE registration badges gave out, there were not enough programs, the Pioneer Hotel's rooms were insufficient, and some hundred applicants for banquet tickets had to be turned down at the Institute's Regional Meeting in Tucson, Nov. 1-5. Minor inconveniences these, however, occasioned by the fact that, optimistic as they are in Arizona, about half again as many partook of the week's activities as were expected. For this, the local program committee can be blamed-both the technical and social features were too attractive in quantity and quality. Seriously speaking, though, the Institute has probably never had a more successful Regional Meeting than this one. It being the first that has been held in Arizona in 22 years, no effort was spared to make it the distinctive gathering that it was.

Le concept du forage horizontal a été développé voilà de nombreuses années. Différents types de plate-formes permettant le forage horizontal depuis une cheminée ont été conçus par divers manufacturiers ou opérateurs miniers. Entre autres, on connaît bien la griffe de montage Alimak à laquelle peut être fixée une plat-forme sur laquelle est montée une foreuse. En 1992, Ross-Finlay a développé sa propre plate-forme de forage qui à notre opinion améliore la flexibilité du concept du forage horizontal, en augmente la productivité et en diminue le coût d?ensemble tout en assurant une sécurité accrue des travailleurs. Tel que montré à la figure 1, la plate-forme employée à la Mine Kiena est composée d?un toit de protection contre les chutes d?objets et de deux passerelles de forage de forme carrée. Le toit et les passerelles sont fixées à une structure de 6.5 m de longueur équipée de deux assemblages de rouleaux (non montrés à la figure) permettant de faire glisser l?ensemble sur des rails Alimak. L?angle du toit et des passerelles peut être ajusté pour des cheminées dont le pendage varie de 65 degrés à 85 degrés.

The Thor lake deposit is a world class resource of rare earth (REE) metals and minerals in Canada. Development work to optimize a REE mineral recovery process flow sheet is underway, however, given the ore mineralogy; the developed reagent scheme is relatively complex. As part of a research project, micro flotation tests were conducted on a feed sample in order to examine factors affecting stream partitioning. SEM-EDX was performed to evaluate variability in grain composition between streams (concentrate and tails) and TOF-SIMS surface analysis was used to determine statistically significant differences in surface species particularly related to potential activation (or depression) of the examined mineral phases. SEM-EDX analysis reveal that the concentrate has a significantly higher proportion of REE bearing grains (carbonates and phosphates) relative to the tail (almost none were identified). Spectral fingerprinting by TOF-SIMS has allowed for the identification of all reagent species investigated. Reagent signal intensity discrimination on test stream mineral surfaces was observed by the TOF-SIMS analysis using reagents at plant concentration levels. TOF-SIMS analysis confirmed that REE bearing grains reporting to the concentrate are doing so in response to collector attachment whereas grains reporting to the tail are doing so in response to a lack of collector and/or in combination with the presence of the depressant. The surface analysis of gangue phases reveal a similar reagent discrimination; the signal intensity of collector species was significantly higher on the concentrate samples relative to the tails while depressant species were significantly enriched on the surface of the gangue phases in the tail samples. A detailed evaluation of the surface species representing the various reagents used in flotation scheme revealed a distinct competitive relationship between two of the reagents. The surface analysis identified that when used in concurrently, there appears to be a negative feedback resulting in a significant reduction in loading for several of the collectors on grains reporting to the concentrate. The small-scale surface mining operation in northern regions is typically located in a remote, ungaged basin. With the recent increase in the economic potential of mining, the number of small operations is increasing. The year-to-year variability in precipitation in this region under study is of great concern to mine operators. Some years may yield only 5 to 6 inches of precipitation, while others may yield in excess of 15 inches. Such variability makes placer mining operations difficult to plan, since low water years may result in too little run-off for gravel washing and high water years may result in flooding of mining developments. There are no official streamfloaw records in many watersheds in the northern region containing placer mining claims. However, information from other streams permits calculation of an estimated discharge for a watershed under consideration using average flows per square mile of drainage. It is to be emphasized that these are average or expected figures in reality, one water year may be significantly wetter or drier than another. This high variability of annual precipitation is significant in relation to placer operations because of the large quantities of water required for this type of mining. Some operations can not operate in low water years. In the larger watersheds, operations may continue in low water years but at a slower pace because of longer water collecting times. The high variability of available run-off rakes placer mining in many parts of Alaska difficult to plan on a long range because of the unpredictability of water supplies.

As a consequence of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969(PL91-173), the Bureau of Mines (BOM) entered into a contract with Ocean Energy Inc. (OEI) to develop, fabricate, install, and evaluate a permissible lighting system for use on a longwall coal mining operation. The program schedule is shown in Figure 1.1. The proposed regulations are contained in Appendix A. The initial part of the program involved a survey of existing longwall lighting practices in Germany and England and an evaluation of a variety of lighting components on a mockup of a longwall mining operation that was fabricated under this program. Visits made to German and British mines uncovered major differences in lighting level requirements, permissibility aspects, size, and operating constraints which identified wide disparities and essentially eliminated from further consideration any known imported lighting devices for meeting the higher lighting levels and standards proposed for US coal mines by the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA). The longwall mockup provided use¬ful information regarding the amount of illumination required, physical size and shape of lamps, light distribution problems, cable routing, use of connectors, signaling, glare, and other important factors unique to the lighting of low coal longwalls.

MFIRE is a computer simulation program that performs normal ventilation network planning calculations, and dynamic transient state simulation of ventilation networks under a variety of conditions. The program is useful for the analysis of ventilation networks under thermal and mechanical influence. MFIRE simulates a mine's ventilation system and its response to altered ventilation parameters, external influences such as temperatures, and internal influences such as fires. Extensive output enables detailed quantitative analysis of the effects of the proposed alteration to the ventilation system Network simulation using digital computers has become widespread throughout the mining industry in recent years. However, as the sophistication of the simulator increases (MFIRE, for example), the complexity of input data requirements and interpretations of results requires more skill and knowledge from the users. Perhaps the most difficult part of using MFIRE is to construct the data set describing the mine's physical layout and its ventilation properties. The initial attempts to get the data set running often reveal unknown or ignored aspects of the mine's ventilation. MFIRE was written in Fortran 77 and compiled with Microway1 Fortran for the Intel 80386 based computers with a 80387 math co-processor. The source code is portable and available for users who wish to modify the source code to operate on other computers. This user manual describes the development of MFIRE, the input format and requirements, the output, common errors, fire parameters, and examples MFIRE application. Valuable reference material is included in the appendices. Knowledgeable users may skip directly to the PROGRAM INSTALLATION AND OPERATION section to begin using MFIRE immediately.

The Bosphorus Rail Tunnel Project, located in Istanbul, Turkey, aims to provide a Euro-Asian rail link, via an immersed tube tunnel crossing the Bosphorus Strait, along which will run all commuter, freight and intercity passenger trains of Turkish State Railways (TCDD), as well as the future extension to the European rail network. The total length of upgrading and new railway construction will be approximately 76 km. The main structures include the immersed tube tunnel; mechanised shield tunnels; new Austrian tunnelling method (NATM) tunnels; cut-and-cover, at-grade and retained-cut/fill structures; and some service structures. This paper discusses Phase 1 implementation of the project, one of the major transportation infrastructure projects in the world today, whose varied structures present stimulating engineering and construction challenges.

This report describes a statistical analysis of 41,502 respirable quartz dust samples collected from 1974 through 1981 in metal and nonmetal mines and mills. The goal of this Bureau of Mines study was to identify commodities and occupations associated with high quartz dust exposure so that future enforcement and research activity can be focused on the high-exposure areas. For this analysis, the Bureau used its computerized Mine Inspection Data Analysis System (MIDAS), which contains data on nearly 350,000 air samples, including data for 61 contaminants in 45 commodities. The samples analyzed were collected by inspectors of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MS HA). The data were entered into the MIDAS computer and coded according to commodity, occupation, location, and other categorical information. Occupations an. commodities with high quartz dust exposure were identified by grouping the data by code categories. Workers at sandstone, clay and shale, and miscellaneous nonmetallic mineral mills had the highest quartz dust exposures. Within these mills, occupations with high exposures were baggers, general laborers, and persons involved in crushing, grinding, and sizing operations. Dust concentrations in these mills were not necessarily the highest, but because the dust contained a high percentage of quartz, the health risk from dust exposure was the greatest.

In Broken Hill, Northern Rhodesia, two water jacket lead furnaces have been in operation for the past three years. The furnaces were erected in war time, and only absolute essentials were procurable. The water for the jackets was obtained from wells adjacent to the works, in a dolomite formation. There being no water-softening plant, except a small one capable of treating water for the power plant only, this water was found to make a heavy scale in the jacket. During 1917 several jackets were burnt through, resulting in serious trouble and loss of output. In order to avoid this, furnaces were stopped twice a month for 8 hours and scale was removed as far as possible. In addition to the scale trouble during the summer months, a green slime grew in the supply tanks and occasionally became detached from the tank and collected in the cocks near the jackets. This caused risk to the jackets and was difficult to remove without a stoppage of the furnace. In 1918, bundles of wattle bark were placed in the hot well at the rate of one ton per month. These extracted the tannin and added from 0.5 to one part of tannin per 100,000 to the circulating water. The hot water was cooled over a brushwood cooling tower and returned to the supply tanks. The well water required to, make up the wastage was estimated at 40,000 gal per day.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the applicability of the freeze-drying technique for preparing dispersion-strengthened tungsten powders suitable for conversion by powder metallurgy into materials which might have improved high-temperature strength. Extruded rods from compacts of tungsten-5 vol pct thoria had at 1,650° C a tensile strength of 30,300 psi and a 10-hour stress-rupture strength of 12,700 psi, These are slightly below those measured for swaged rods of commercial tungsten-3.7 vol pct thoria. Only those tungsten-thoria dispersions containing a stoichiometric deficiency of oxygen yielded a significant strengthening effect. A low-melting eutectic formed in extruded tungsten dispersions containing either zirconia or yttria, which caused a lowering of the tensile strengths. These tensile strengths were only slightly higher than strengths of elemental tungsten made from commercial powder having a particle size of 2.4 microns (Fisher subsieve). Sheet made from this commercial tungsten had a slightly higher tensile strength than tungsten made by freeze drying, but the freeze-dried tungsten sheet had a lower recrystallization temperature, a lower ductile-to-brittle transition temperature, and a higher purity.

Models made by encasing strain-gage networks in epoxy are described and evaluated. With this technique relatively complex models can be constructed in which any number of gages can be located and alined precisely. Although the gages are an integral part of the model matrix, they create no important mechanical or thermal stresses. Model construction techniques and experimental data proved reproducible and reliable. In addition, the sGlution obtained with these models to the problem of the state of stress around a circular hole in a plate subject to a plane stress condition was in agreement with theoretical, photoelastic, and finite-element solutions.

This international symposium was convened to assess the current state of knowledge concerning the health hazards that might be associated with the ingestion and inhalation of fibrous particles produced from the processing of taconite ore. Concern about fibrous particles in taconite arose from their similarities to amphibole asbestos minerals that are known to be human carcinogens. The mineralogical characteristics of asbestos fibers are reviewed and compared with the fibrous particles known to be present in taconite ore from the eastern end of the Iron Range. The epidemiological and experimental animal studies for asbestos-related disease (including gastrointestinal cancer from asbestos in dinking water)were critically evaluated andcompared to those of the fibrous minerals in the taconite. The focus was on the amphiboles in the cummingtonite?grunerite and tremolite?ferroactinolite series and other fibrous particles in both the Iron Range and the Duluth Complex. This included examination of the reported occurrence of any asbestiform ferroactinolite, crocidolite asbestos, chrysotile asbestos, etc. In addition, an effort was made to provide a scientific framework to address fibrous minerals, which may be associated with nonferrous mineral deposits in the Duluth Complex. State-of-the-art risk assessment models for asbestos were presented. Risk assessment scenarios were developed for taconite-derived fibers at environmental exposure levels related to the operation of the Silver Bay taconite processing facility. These calculated risks were found to be trivial even after it was assumed that all mineral fibers were as carcinogenic as amphibole asbestos.
