ESTIMATION of re- serves in prorated sand fields has been discussed by S. A. Judson, H. D. Easton, Jr., and W. A. Schaeffer, Jr., in a paper that appears in Vol. 114 (1935), of the A.I.M.E. TRANSACTIONS. The purpose of this present paper is to extend the investigation to prorated flush limestone fields and to outline a method of procedure in determining the amount of oil originally in place and the amount of oil that can be recovered from such fields. Although it is possible to use the decline curves to estimate the amount of recoverable oil in certain limestone fields that are allowed to produce the oil at or near capacity production, such a method cannot be used in fields under severely restricted production rates. The problem is exceedingly complex due to fluctuation in the allowable rates of oil production over a wide range and at frequent intervals, and especially because of the heterogeneous nature of the reservoir itself. A well completed in a large solution cavity, capable of producing great quantities of oil per day, may be offset by a well of very limited capacity. Also, it is di5cult to arrive at an average figure for porosity in a given limestone reservoir due to abrupt variations in the character of limestone, in many instances even between two ad- joining wells. It is a safe statement that uniformity of porosity and permeability in limestone reservoirs .is nonexistent. It is evident, therefore, that the method of estimation of re- serves on the basis of per-acre content can give only approximate results.

Although the titaniferous iron occurrences at Iron Mountain have been known since 1850, exploitation of the deposits has been discouraged by the metallurgical difficulties encountered in treating the complex magnetite-ilmenite material. Because of the intimate association of magnetite and ilmenite, the material is not amenable to known ore-dressing practices. During World War II, industries started moving south and west from the industrial East; iron-ore reserves in the East were being depleted at a rapid rate; and titanium came into demand as a pigment. Imports of ilmenite from India, then the main source, were practically suspended because of lack of shipping space. These factors created interest in possible exploitation of the Iron Mountain deposits as a source of iron and titanium.

The San Vicente Pipeline project involves the construction of an 8-1/2 foot diameter water pipeline in an 11 mile long tunnel in San Diego, California. The tunnel will be excavated in extremely variable geologic conditions consisting of strong granitic and metamorphic rocks, weak sedimentary rocks, abrasive conglomerates, and mixed face conditions. This paper discusses the challenging geologic conditions and some of the key design evaluations for the project. Currently design work for the project has been completed and construction will be underway by mid-2005.

A flotation process was developed by the Bureau of Mines for separation of carbonate and phosphate minerals occurring in unaltered phosphate ores of the Phosphoria formation. The process involves depression of phosphate minerals with fluosilicic acid and flotation of carbonate minerals with fatty acid emulsions. In individual laboratory tests, selective removal of carbonates was achieved with phosphate recoveries ranging from 60 to 80 pct P205. In continuous-circuit testing, sizing and separate treatment of coarse and fine fractions was necessary to achieve 65-pct P205 recovery. Concentrate grade ranged from 26 to 33 pct P205. The flotation tailings containing primarily carbonate and phosphate minerals is a potential fertilizer material. When reacted with H3P04, concentrated superphosphate containing approximately 40 pct available P205 was obtained.

High metal prices and new world trade standards and accounting for environmental liability in financial disclosures are creating markets for metals commodities that are produced using ?green technologies?. A promising "green" gold leaching system uses a polysulfide based lixiviant which is non-toxic and non-polluting. Laboratory testing has demonstrated selective gold extraction rates comparable to those of cyanide. The polysulfide lixiviant is a dilute aqueous solution which can be inexpensively produced from readily available chemical reagents and even mining wastes. The reagent system is self-buffering and maintains the optimal chemical environment for leaching. Treatment of residual leach solutions is not necessary because the lixiviant itself is not toxic, and breaks down as the system equilibrates. Simple closed system boiling is used to recover gold from process solutions. The polysulfide lixiviant can then be readily renewed and recycled back into the system, forming a closed loop system that conserves reagents and energy which minimizes operating costs. Economic projections have shown that the system can be used profitably for standard ore types and grades.

Human response to blast induced vibration and air overpressure is an unsolved problem that accompanies excavation process in mining. Pre-assessment and understanding of annoyance due to production blasting is probably one of the most important aspects of a successful mining operation. Complaints arising due to unoptimised blasts lead to various critical situations that hamper production. Inspite, this important aspect has been covered by a limited number of researchers in the world and probably least in Indian context. Human response is a complex phenomenon and the sensitivity of individual also vary from person to person depending on various factors like age, sex, literacy, health and exposure to mining. With ever increasing demand of minerals, opencast mines are expected to approach habitats and thus mine management may witness increased response to blasting. Many developed countries have their own guidelines based on scientific analysis, addressing such environmental problems, where as there are a few studies available in India. This study introspects above phenomenon in tune with mining requirements by analysing direct human response. This paper is based on a case study regarding the human response to blast induced hazards in a Manganese mine situated in central India. Advanced techniques of Critical Path Method and Multiple Response Analyses have been used to unearth important inferences on the response of different crosssections of population residing about the mine to blast induced noise, ground vibration and air overpressure. Various inferences drawn may provide guidelines to the planners, environment or safety departments and blasting official for safe and environment friendly blast design.

In this paper, the removal of fluorides and chlorides from blast furnace dusts by water vapor enhanced microwave roasting was investigated, combined with the advantages of microwave selective heating and based on a thermodynamic analysis of zinc and lead halides. According to proposed reactions in the process, detailed experiments were systematically conducted to study the effect of roasting temperature, holding time, air flow, water vapor flow rates, and stirring speed on the efficiency of the removal of F and Cl. The results show that 97.26% of F and 64.23% of Cl could be separated when the condition of the roasting temperature of 650°C, stirring speed of 80 rpm, holding time at 60 min, air flow of 350 L/h and water vapor flow rate of 8 mL/min was optimized.

In this paper, a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model for the short-term scheduling of open pit mines is formulated. The proposed model aims at sequencing the blocks extraction over multiple short-term periods. The model takes into account multiple processes, waste dumps, and multiple stockpiles. The short-term scheduler makes a decision on the period, destination, and route that ore and waste are supposed to take to minimize costs while meeting all the mining and processing constraints. The destinations of the extracted materials are also controlled by their rock types. A monthly short-term production scheduling case study of an iron ore deposit is carried out over a year to validate the model.

An underground medium frequency radio communications system has been developed and demonstrated in both coal and metal/non metal mines. The principal advantage of the system are its low cost, ease of installation and the ability to provide radio communications to any vehicle or roving miner in the underground mine. The system provides high quality radio coverage in work areas and along manways with existing "wireplant" conductors. The conductors include AC power cable, telephone cable, metal water and high pressure air pipes, etc. The measured communications range from the base station to mobile transceiver exceeded 12,500 ft without the use of repeaters. A cost/benefit analysis shows that the initial cost of the equipment can be returned 2-6 times in the first year. The mine productivity increases by approx. 13 percent.

"In the changing global market scenario for raw materials for the steel industry, a number of novel iron- and steelmaking process technologies are being developed to provide the steel companies with economically-sustainable alternatives for iron- and steel-making. In addition, the steel industry is also focusing on reduction of energy consumption as well as green-house gas (GHG) emissions to address the crucial subject of climate change. In this context, it is important to assess these critical issues for the alternate iron- and steelmaking technologies that have been developed. This paper presents a comparative evaluation of energy-efficiency and GHG emissions for some selected iron- and steelmaking technologies that are being considered for implementation. In this work, Hatch’s G-CAP™ and En-MAP™ tools that were developed with the main objective of quantifying and qualifying the potential energy savings and CO2 abatement within the iron and steel industry, were employed in the evaluation conducted. INTRODUCTIONThe iron and steel industry continues to transform itself and evolve in the ever-changing global market place – the raw material scenario is constantly changing with respect to quality and quantity (availability), there is stiff competition in both global and local markets, and there is increasing pressure to address global climate change issues, especially since the steel industry is highly energy- and carbonintensive. There is growing importance of steel production in developing countries such as China and India – this means that the steel industry in these countries will play an important role in defining and shaping the future of the industry.Climate change is expected to present new risks to the steel industry with respect to ensuring a sustainable business. Legislators are proposing to limit GHG emission by placing an implicit price on CO2 emission - market-based “cap and trade”, carbon tax etc.. In this scenario, it is important for the steel companies to reduce exposure to climate-related risks and at the same time, find business opportunities within these risks. Thus, there is a need to strategically manage the climate change risks; the key steps to strategically manage climate change risks are presented in Table 1[1]."

Grunerite asbestos (amosite) has been shown in epidemiological and experimental animal studies to cause lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis commonly referred to as asbestosis. An overview of the human and experimental animal studies describing the health hazards of grunerite asbestos (amosite) is presented. Of the many human studies describing the health hazards of asbestos, only three factories using mainly, if not exclusively, grunerite asbestos (amosite) have been studied. The first is a series of reports on a cohort of 820 workers from a plant located in Paterson, NJ. Among this cohort, 18.7% died of lung cancer and 17 mesotheliomas occurred. The Paterson factory closed in 1954 and moved to Tyler, Texas where it operated until 1972. Among the 1130 former workers in the Tyler plant 6 mesotheliomas were reported with 15.8% lung cancer mortality. The third grunerite asbestos (amosite) exposed cohort was an insulation board manufacturing facility in Uxbridge, United Kingdom. Here 17.1% of the workers died of lung cancer and 5 mesotheliomas occurred. The lung content from 48 Uxbridge workers was analyzed by analytical transmission electron microscopy for mineral fibers. The relationship between grunerite asbestos (amosite) concentrations in the lung correlated with grades of fibrosis and asbestos bodies and was lower than the concentration found in the cases with malignant tumors. The lung cancer cases contained more grunerite asbestos (amosite) than mesothelioma cases, and in the cases of non-alignant disease the concentrations were still lower. In both types of malignancies the concentration of grunerite asbestos (amosite) was very high-over a billion fibers per gram of dried lung tissue. Occupational exposure to airborne concentrations of between 14 and 100 fibers of grunerite asbestos (amosite) per milliliter after 20 year latency causes marked increases in lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis (asbestosis). © 2007 Elsevier Inc. The safe operation of gas transmission pipelines is increasingly coming under the spotlight. Increasing environmental pressure is also forcing pipeline owners and operators to ensure the integrity of their pipelines. The integrity of a pipeline is usually determined using intelligent pigging, often referred to as In Line Inspection (ILI). However, in many cases, gas pipelines cannot be pigged for a variety of reasons. The National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) has recently published Recommended Practice (RP) 0502, referred to as the External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA) Methodology to assist pipeline owners with assessing the condition of pipelines that cannot be pigged. 2. External Corrosion Direct Assessment - NACE RP 0502 The ECDA Methodology is conducted in four phases as follows: ? Pre-Assessment ? Indirect Inspection ? Direct Examination ? Post-Assessment In the Pre-Assessment Phase, all the relevant historical and current data relating to the pipeline in question is reviewed. This covers pipeline, construction, soils/environmental, corrosion control and operational data. The aim of the Pre-Assessment Phase is to determine whether ECDA is feasible, and if so, to define the ECDA Regions and finally to select the Indirect Inspection Tools that will be used for each region. Originally developed for use in coal mines where on-shift blasting with explosives was prohibited, compressed-air blasting has been used for the past 15 years as a substitute for fixed explosives. With the current commercially available compressed-air systems -Airdox and Armstrong -coal is dislodged by a high-pressure discharge of air from a pressurized shell placed in the coal borehole. In the original systems stationary compressors were mounted on the surface or in the underground ventilated areas. These proved so successful that a mobile compressor unit was developed for use at the working face. Because of the possibility that such a unit might operate in a gassy atmosphere, the Bureau of Mines has investigated the hazards associated with operation under conditions where firedamp could accumulate in explosive concentrations. In 2024, Capstone Copper Corp commissioned a new sulfide flotation plant at Mantoverde in the Atacama region of Chile to process copper ore at a design rate of 32,000tpd. The pyrite associated with the copper ore body contains cobalt in solid solution, with Co replacing Fe in the pyrite matrix. As per the existing sulfide flotation flowsheet most of the pyrite is depressed and sent to tailings via the cleaner scavenger tail stream. A new project considers the recovery of the pyrite from the cleaner-scavenger tails via froth flotation to produce a cobaltiferous pyrite concentrate, which is then leached via the existing dynamic copper leach pad to oxidize the pyrite and dissolve the cobalt. The cobalt is recovered from the solution by treating a bleed stream of copper SX raffinate through a continuous, counter-current ion exchange (CCIX) facility. This approach to by-production of cobalt confers numerous benefits, including reduced costs compared with alternative cobalt recovery processes, reduced acid consumption in the heap leach, increased copper production, and reduced acid mine drainage potential due to the removal of pyrite from the mill tailings.

This research was conducted as part of the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines program to recover metals, glass, and a combustible fraction from municipal solid waste (MSW). The objective of this analytical study was to determine the concentration of antimony, arsenic, and mercury in samples taken from various sampling areas in the Bureau of Mines raw refuse recycling plant and to compare these values with those for coals used in the generation of electricity. To provide the necessary analytical data, sensitive reproducible ashing-chemical digestion-atomic absorption procedures were adapted from published procedures. It was determined that antimony and mercury concentrations in the combustible fraction of MSW are approximately an order of magnitude higher than those found in coals presently used for power generation;' the arsenic concentration is similar in both fuels.

The Ispat Mexicana SA de CV (IMEXSA) pelletising plant is located at Lazaro Cardenas on the west coast of Mexico. It is the primary source of feed stock for the adjacent direct reduction (DR) plants and steelmaking facilities. The initial design of the pellet plant began in 1981 for 3 Mtpa of DR grade pellets using local concentrate received by pipeline.' Several construction delays, an ownership change, and a decision to use imported concentrates delivered in 60 000 to 90 000 tonnes ship cargoes required flowsheet modifications and additions. The design concepts are described for the plant which includes concentrate regrind to final pelletising particle size.

This circular is part 5 of the third paper (entitled "Excavation") of a series summarizing the technical problems involved in the production and preparation of sand and gravel. Part 1 discussed the use of power shovels, draglines, and excavator cranes; part 2, power scrapers, slackline cable-way excavators, and hydraulic monitors; part 3, hydraulic, clamshell, ladder, and dipper dredges; and part 4, haulage systems in general, with particular reference to locomotive and car, hoist and car, and remote-control systems. This circular discusses the use of motor trucks, conveyor belts, pumps end pipe lines, barges and towboats, and aerial trams. MOTOR-TRUCK HAULAGE During recent years motor trucks have gained considerable ground as a successful competitor of locomotive haulage for quarries and gravel pits. Often where trucks have displaced locomotives and cars the operators readily admit an increase in both labor and total haulage operating costs but point to some other advantage as offsetting the extra expense. In other instances haulage costs have beep reduced by the use of trucks. In still others operators, having replaced locomotive haul with trucks, have again returned to the earlier method. Obviously gasoline-driven motor trucks cannot successfully compete with other types of haulage under all conditions. The apparent' growth in the number of advocates of truck haulage, however, indicates that it has passed the experimental stage and become a permanent competitor to other tyres.

This report describes a field survey and laboratory investigation into the causes of failure of resiliently clad screen decks applied to coal preparation plants. Blinding of screen deck perforations and delamination of the resilient cladding are studied and mechanisms responsible for these failure modes are hypothesized. A laboratory test program to simulate the mechanisms was begun and abandoned when it became apparent that meaningful test results would require a substantially redirected effort. No meaningful test data was obtained from the laboratory simulation.

This report describes in detail three waterflooding projects and a pres-sure-maintenance project in Butler and Cowley Counties, Kans., that will be visited on the 1963 annual spring tour of the Kansas-Oklahoma Waterflood Association. Among the unique features of the projects are the flooding of five oil-producing horizons separately with injection water furnished by two water treating plants. Discussion of the individual projects includes information on their early history, the source and treatment of the injection fluids, oil production decline curves, and the results of water injection on oil production.
