The valuation of early-stage exploration projects requires a valuer to take into account a large number of uncertain value drivers, the interplay among which may be non-linear. This paper examines some of the key value drivers including geology, target metrics, project area and maturity, the market and the psychology behind the decision-making process. The commonly accepted valuation methods and their underlying logic are outlined, including a view on why they evolved, what value drivers they attempt to address and their potential shortcomings. These methods include the multiple of exploration expenditure, geoscience rating, expected values and market based methods. The potential future valuation methods of replacement values and neural networks are also introduced along with how to minimise heuristic bias and error within the market-based approach.CITATION:Bell, J A and Guj, P, 2012. Recent dry-top electric smelting tests at the Northwest Electrodevelopment Experiment Station, Albany, Oreg., indicate that a high-titanium slag and a good grade of pig iron can be produced from alluvial Idaho ilmenite. A total of 120 tons of concentrates were smelted during this investigation, to yield an average of 0.5 ton of slag and 0.3 ton of pig iron per ton of ilmenite. Power consumption averaged 1,400 kv.-hr. per ton of ilmenite, at a feed rate of 400 to 500 pounds per hour, when operating at an electrical energy input of 290 to 370 kilowatts. The optimum operating voltage appeared to be 110 volts, phase-to-phase. Graphite electrode consumption averaged 15.6 pounds per ton of ilmenite smelted. Magnesite furnace refractory withstood the corrosive action of the hot metal and slag better than carbon refractory.

One goal of the Bureau of Mines is to conserve the Nation's mineral resources by developing improved performance materials. Consistent with this goal, the Bureau conducted studies on the formation of undesirable cristobalite in seven different fire clays used as refractories. The studies employed scanning electron micrography, chemical and X-ray analyses, and pyrometric cone equivalent determinations to examine the sample clays and determine the effect of thermal history and stablilizing additives on the amount of cristobalite in various calcines. This research has indicated that as fire clay calcining temperatures increased from 1390° to 1,490° C there was a gradual decrease in the percent of cristobalite present in the calcines and a progressive development of mullite crystallization. No cristobalite was found in fire clays calcined above 1,550° C, but cristobalite reappeared when the calcines were reheated to temperatures between 1,400° and 1,500° C. The research also revealed that additions of lithium fluoride (LiF) prevented formation of cristobalite in fire clay calcines.

Functional Description Figure 1 is a typical flowsheet for a system for solid fuel addition to filter cake. Solid fuel, coal, coal breeze, or charcoal, is fed from a,stockpile to a surge hopper. The solid fuel is metered into a grinding mill. The fuel is dried and ground in a grinding mill. The on-size particles are removed from the mill by air sweeping. The ground solid fuel is separated from the air stream by a cyclone and stored in a surge hopper. The ground solid fuel is then pneumatically conveyed to a small hopper in the balling area. The fuel is proportioned into the filter cake just prior to mixing. An efficient mixer is very important to have a successful operation. The exact flowsheet would depend on a number of factors including what fuel is used, how the fuel is received, and the cnaracteristics of the fuel as received. Availability of floor space in the plant may also affect the flowsheet. For example, drying air may be supplied from the pellet furnace if the grinding mill can be located near the grate, or the pneumatic conveying system and a surge hopper may be eliminated by placing the grinding mill adjacent .to the mixing area. Also, for a multiple line plant, a ball mill rather than a roller mill may be more suitable.

This report deals exclusively with roof-fall accidents that occurred during 1955 and 1956 in both anthracite and bituminous-coal mines throughout the United States. The report stems from a cooperative study conducted by the Bureau of Mines and the Roof-Control Committee of the Coal-Mining Section, National Safety Council. The study includes an analysis of individual accident reports, sets forth the measurable factors, and compares such factors with a representative sample of average data from 39 anthracite mines and 117 bituminous mines (appendixes A and B). Particular emphasis is placed on fatal roof-fall accidents with respect to their causes, locations, and the methods of support used at the point of occurrence. INTRODUCTION The purpose of the report is to classify all measurable details of the occurrences of roof-fall fatalities so that the material presented will assist those promoting safety and will serve as a manual for those whose principal duty is inspection of mines.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, platinum Mortimer Smelter is one of the three smelting operations in the Anglo Platinum Group. It is located in the Limpopo Province, approximately 100 km north of Rustenburg, and approximately 15 km west of Northam. The smelter operation is the smallest of the three smelting operations in the group, with a smelting capacity of 170 kt/annum. The operation consists of a Larox filtration plant, a Drytech flash drying plant, a modified Elkem / Hatch 19.5 MVA furnace, and a 60 t/h matte crushing plant. The operation does not convert its furnace matte, and hence the final sulphide rich matte is transported to and processed further at the Anglo Platinum Converting Process (ACP) within the Waterval Smelter Complex in Rustenburg. Furnace slag is granulated, and processed through a slag mill, or transported to a slag dump.

The sedimentary basins of this region developed in the collision zone of thePacific Ocean plate and the continent. Stresses were transmitted thorough wedge-like lithospheric blocks, such as the Okotsk Sea, East Kamchatka, Aleutian and other smaller blocks. Compression and inversion were more active at the boundaries: ***INSERT EQ*** and ***INSERT EQ*** in places. Tension, rifting and the increase in the rate of sedimentation were marked in P1-2, P3, N12, and also in N2 û Q in places. Structural plan changes of the sedimentary basins and possible oil, gas and fluid migration occurred more actively at the boundaries: ***INSERT EQ***.

Pipe pigging is a technique for the in situ (field) coating application, to create a seamless internal anti-corrosive lining of long pipelines. The technology originated in the cleaning of pipes, and these proven cleaning methods continue to be used today. Firstly mechanical cleaning of the pipeline is performed, using wire brush, razor back, course stud and fine wire pigs, then foam pigs, or criss cross pigs, and urethane blade scrapers to remove loose debris, wax, residual hydrocarbons and corrosion products from the pipeline. Part of the proprietary techniques and expertise is to ensure that these cleaning pigs do not get stuck Next chemical cleaning of the pipeline is performed, using repeated pig runs with detergents, solvents, acid etching, corrosion inhibitors, consecutively batched between two pigs, to ensure a clean, dry metal finish to a visual cleanliness standard of ISO SA2½. These in situ techniques were developed, 40 years ago to apply internal corrosion protection to pipes using a thin layer of epoxy based paint (50 to 100 micron). Until recently these old techniques were never improved upon. Although many thousands of kilometres of pipes were successfully coated with these thin film epoxy based paints and old application techniques, these thin paint films had problems in weld coverage, and were also unable to fill pits caused by pitting corrosion, and unable to replace metal loss caused by channel erosion. New coating material developments, revised application methods and modified pigging equipment have now made it possible to apply thick film coatings as corrosion barriers to the internals of pipes in the field, using these pigging techniques. The thick coating films can be up to 1 mm (40 mils) thick in a single coating run over long distances. The new thick film coating materials and application techniques are similar to continuous screeding, creating a far more robust seamless internal pipe lining when compared to the old technology of thin film paints. With thick film polymers the option now exists to create a structural GRP pipe within a pipe, be it steel or cementicious. It has been preferable, even necessary, to move away from the traditional epoxy paints and coatings. It was found difficult or impossible to use epoxy materials for these pipe coating applications due to the requirement for achieving a suitable viscosity with adequate hold up. In order to reduce epoxy viscosity a solvent or reactive diluent is required. This inevitably lead to solvent entrapment and poor cure characteristics in cold climates. Further mud cracking in over thick areas, the inability to extend or reduce pot life, poor control of cure time and limited resistance to aggressive or chemical environments made solvent based epoxy resins a poor choice.

Petrographic and mineralogical studies were made on unoxidized samples from the Cuyuna and Mesabi districts to study occurrence and properties of the iron phyllosilicate minerals . Examination of 96 thin sections from the thinbedded facies of the main iron - formation of the Cuyuna district indicates that the most abundant minerals are Mn - Mg - siderite , stilpnome lane , and minnesotaite . Reconstitution and recrystallization of minerals has occurred along certain beds , and textures indicate that some minnesotaite apparently formed at expense of stilpnomelane . Three samples of stilpnome lane and one of minnesotaite were concentrated from fracture - fillings within iron- formation . Results of chemical , optical , spectrographic , X- ray diffraction , and differential thermal analyses on these samples are reported . The detection of ammonia in stilpnome lane samples is the first such occurrence reported , and its significance is discussed . New mineral data are presented on greenalite and probable septechamosite from the Mesabi district .

INTRODUCTION The Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) Tunnel Scheme is part of the Alimineti Madhava Reddy Project in Andhra Pradesh, South India. This scheme has been planned since 1983 and will provide irrigation facilities to drought-ridden areas in Andhra Pradesh. Water will be transferred from the Srisailam Reservoir during the monsoon months to 0.3 million acres of farmland and will also provide drinking water to villages en-route. The paper will address the design and onsite assembly of the Robbins Double Shield TBMs for Tunnel-1 of the SLBC tunnel scheme from planning to start-up of the machines. Also, it will provide a current status of the project and describe the advantages of a site assembly. Problems encountered to date and the solutions adopted will also be described. The project comprises over 50 km of tunnels and involves construction of the world?s longest tunnel without intermediate access. The TBM tunnels at 43.9 km in length and 10.0 m diameter will cross the Amrabad plateau, containing a wild life sanctuary and India?s largest tiger reserve, the Rajiv Gandhi. Jaiprakash elected to excavate the tunnel using two tunnel boring machines, rather than by drill and blast, in order to alleviate surface disturbances to environment and the tiger reserve, wild life sanctuary, and protected forestry areas. The Project was awarded to the Main Contractor Jaiprakash Associates Ltd with The Robbins Company as the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) supplier in August 2005. The Robbins Company supplied the TBMs along with two continuous conveyor systems and all spares and consumables to complete the tunnel excavation.

A mathematical modeling method was developed by the Bureau of Mines for the prediction of the principal equilibrium species in the solvent extraction of copper. The use of models for predicting the amount of metal extracted can reduce the amount of experimental work required to characterize a system for purposes such as optimization studies. Models were developed for the extraction of copper from ammoniacal sulfate and carbonate solutions with commercially available extract ants commonly used by industry. Results from laboratory shakeout tests compared well with predictions of the equilibrium concentrations of copper and pH values. For example, the loading of copper onto the solvent was predicted for most cases within ±S pct of the measured values, and the pH to with-in ±O.l pH unit in sulfate systems and ±O.2 pH unit in carbonate systems. Both mechanistic and empirical extraction equations were developed from laboratory data for copper and ammonia. The empirical-based models were slightly more accurate than were the mechanistic-based mod-els. Industrial level concentrations of the aqueous and organic constituents were used in this work. Independent variables included copper concentration, ionic strength, and initial pH of the aqueous phase; extractants, diluents, and their concentration in the organic phase; and temperature.

"The NewCrest Cadia operation boasts the largest SAG mill commissioned last June 1998. A request was made to shed some more light on possible SAG mill charge behaviour. Three different software were used to simulate SAG mill charge behaviour:Mishra/Rajamanis MillSoft DEM charge motion program, Radziszewskis agglomerated DEM charge motion program and Powell/Nuricks MillTraj outer trajectories program. The contexts simulated are: 20/30 % charge volume, 65/75/85 % critical speed using the Hi-Lo lifter configuration specified for the mill as well as a Hi-Lo 60 degre lifter face configuration. Further, lifter interval was also studied to determine the effect on power draft. Power predictions are compared with those obtained during the commissioning period.INTRODUCTIONThe NewCrest Cadia operation is located outside of Orange, New South Wales, Australia. With proven reserves of 190 million tonnes at a grade of 0.75 g/t Au, the mill was designed to process 17 Mtpa (2065 tph) of ore with an 86% copper and 73% gold recovery. The grinding circuit (Fig. 1, Table I) boasts the largest SAG mill (Fig. 2) and was commissioned last June 1998."

The Adelaide Desalination Plant (ADP) draws raw sea water into the facility and returns saline concentrate to the Gulf St Vincent via subsea conduits. This paper describes the detailed design and construction methodologies developed for the cross connection tunnel excavation. The paper concentrates on key design elements which include:· lateral breakout support of the segmental tunnel lining,· ground improvement grouting in the zone of the cross connection tunnels due to extremely variable and weak ground conditions, and· excavation methodologies and proposed support types of the riser to tunnel cross connections.The design process consisted of developing concepts, detailed risk assessment, three-dimensional (3D) finite element modelling and structural analysis for temporary support of tunnel lining; functional design of the ground improvement grouting and the temporary support; and permanent lining design of tunnel to ocean riser connections in a mixed soft ground/hard rock environment.The paper also presents conclusions of the design based on construction data available, and highlights the close collaboration between the design team and construction team.

WHEN making comparisons of the efficiencies of different grinding and crushing machines it is desirable to be able to estimate the work actually done in crushing the ore from a given size of feed to a given size of product, the screen analysis of both feed and product being determined. Messrs. Klug and Taylor, in a paper on this subject, published in the monthly journal of the Chamber of Mines of WA, 31st January, 1906, have described a method adopted by them in calculations made in connection with a series of trials of grinding pans. Their methOd is based upon the assumption that if a quantity Q of material consisting of particles of average diameter x be crushed down until the average diameter of the particles is y, then the work done in grinding is proportional to Q x. There is no theoretical basis for this assumption that the writer is aware of, and it does not appear to satisfy the fundamental conditions necessary. If the material be further crushed until the diameter 2 becomes Z, the additional work done is measured. The work done in crushing from diameter x to diameter Z in one operation is proportional to Q x:, and therefore we ought to have zx2 y2 x2 Q-+Q-=Q-. y2 Z2 Z2But these expressions are not in general equal to one another. A 3-year study was conducted to evaluate the problems and benefits of using vegetation to stabilize tailing from a potential Minnesota copper-nickel milling operation. The project consisted of three separate investigations: a waste characterization study, a greenhouse study and a field study. With few exceptions, the physical and chemical characteristics of the tai ling were found to lie within the range of properties of Minnesota soils. The tailing lacks organic matter; is deficient in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium; and may contain elevated levels of soluble salts and heavy metals, particularly copper and nickel. Numerous grasses, forbs and woody plants will tolerate the tailing as a rooting medium. Peat incorporation and topsoil dressing provided few benefits to the revegetation process which were not provided by a fertilizer application. With fertilization, grass/legume production in the tailing was comparable to local agricultural yields. Concentration of heavy metals in grasses grown in the tailing were generally below suggested tolerance limits for plants and animal forage. Legumes tended to accumulate higher concentrations of copper and nickel, and metal uptake of most plants was positively correlated with rate of fertilization. Tailing drainage water contained elevated levels of heavy metals, and establishment of vegetation had little effect on the quantity and quality of tailing drainage water. However, topsoil dressing significantly increased drainage water volume when compared to unvegetated control plots. Copper-nickel tailing revegetation recommendations were developed.

Consumption of plastics has been growing in both the U.S. and world markets since the mid-1930s. This growth is due to plastics being used to make new products and as a replacement material for existing products. This paper develops an understanding of the replacement process by looking at the use of plastic, specifically PVC, in the construction pipe industry. History details the growth of the plastics industry and a discussion of the material selection process indicates the advantages and disadvantages of plastic pipe. Analysis shows that the use of plastic, as an alternative material for pipe, is having a significant effect on the cast iron, copper, clay, and steel industries. For the purpose of understanding the replacement process, three example residential systems were examined with a lifecycle cost analysis being performed. PVC was the material of choice in 1988 for all systems. Even though disposal cost was the one area where PVC was not the most cost effective, disposal costs were not sufficient to offset the overall advantage of using PVC on an economic basis. That plastic competes effectively with other materials, in terms of material properties and cost, indicates that further work should be performed to understand the impact plastics have on other material markets.

Este processo normalmente é utilizado para produzir peças de formas complexas e com uma maior precisão dimensional de acordo com a especificidade exigida pelo cliente final. Para obter resultados de qualidade, foi necessária a implantação de técnicas de medição indireta de última geração, que proporcionam ganho de tempo e a redução de desperdício de energia e material, além de aumentar a segurança, reduzindo a presença de pessoas próximas aos materiais para medições manuais. O presente trabalho trata da criação de um sistema de visão que, por meio de análise de imagem, é capaz de coletar a medida do perfil de barras em uma Forjaria em tempo real, podendo ser utilizado durante a operação da prensa, para garantir que o material está em conformidade com o especificado. A execução do sistema em produção aponta que as medidas realizadas apresentam desvio máximo de 2mm em relação àquelas realizadas pelos operadores.

Tracer gases are an effective method for assessment of mine ventilation systems, but their dispersion characteristics can differ substantially as ventilation parameters, such as flow path and velocity, vary. This research utilizes Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to model a simplified full scale model mine, details a sensitivity study examining mesh size for an underground coal mine simulation, and examines gas dispersion parameters to determine the optimal model methods for simulation of tracer gases in underground coal mines. These models can be used to determine how a given tracer gas profile might be generated in a mine or areas of a mine that are not accessible, for example, immediately following a mine disaster. Accurate simulation scenarios can allow for the remote determination of the status of the ventilation network, but the sensitivity of the simulation at mine scale must be carefully examined.

It has often been said by consulting engineers that foundation contractors are in the business of taking risks. One would agree that the mere fact a foundation project can be budgeted, planned, engineered and executed solely on the reliability of eight test borings made at a proposed site having an area of approximately 19,000 square feet, is a risky proposition, in and of itself. Now imagine that this site is actually one half of a city block located in an urban setting in an old, congested, historical neighborhood, surrounded by narrow city streets and historic landmark buildings. And suppose that the required depth of excavation for the construction of the new building on this site is approximately 35 feet and the natural groundwater table is at a depth below existing grade of only 25 feet. Given the difficult site conditions outlined above, one could certainly add the words "challenging" and "complicated" to the inherent word "risky" when describing the construction techniques involved to undertake a foundation project of this magnitude. This case study will discuss in detail how the excavation, sheeting, dewatering and underpinning work was accomplished as well as the problems overcome along the way.
