This report describes the materials flow of mercury in the United States. It examines the mining and production of mercury and the manufacturing, uses, and ultimate disposal of mercury. Materials flowcharts were prepared for 1989 and 1990. An effort was made to include estimates for all major anthropogenic sources including fossil fuel combustion, waste incineration, and nonferrous metal mining operations. Mining and mineral processing released about 100 mt/yr of mercury to the environment in both 1989 and 1990. The combustion o ii fu1s released 175 mt/yr in the same years. The manufacturing, use, and disposal of products containing mercury accounted fix the release of 1,037 mt of mercury in 1989 and 938 mt in 1990. The manufacture of chlorine and caustic soda was a major source of recycled mercury, but it was all reused within the industry. Recovery from all waste products accounted for 36% of reported consumption in 1989 and 42% in 1990. The losses from manufacturing and end use have been declining, whereas mercury emitted from combustion sources has not been strictly regulated and will likely become the largest source of mercury releases to the environment.

The first operation permitted under Michigan’s Part 632 Non-Ferrous Mineral Mining Law, it opened in 2014 and is expected to produce 163 kt (360 million lbs) of nickel, 134 kt (295 million lbs) of copper and small amounts of other metals over its estimated nine-year lifespan.The company extracts approximately 2 kt/d (2,200 stpd) from the underground nickelcopper mine using a bench-and-fill stoping process. Accessed from the surface by specialized underground trucks, the vehicles carry about 45,400-kg (100,000-lb) loads through a 1.6-km (1- mile) long and 5.4-m (18-ft) diameter ramp shaft descending into the earth at a 13 percent grade. Stoping is a bottom-up method that involves systematically blasting columns of loosened ore that is then mucked by front loaders into trucks and backfilled using cemented and uncemented rockfill."

"American Barrick Resources Corporation acquired the goldstrike property in north eastern Nevada in early 1987. Since that time, the company has undertaken an extensive development program. This paper will overview the milling, autoclaving, and heap leaching facilities which are part of the $400-million Betze development plan. Gold production at the Mine has increased from 40,000 ounces per annum in 1987 to more than 500,000 ounces in 1991. And in 1992 Goldstrike will be the single largest North American gold mine when it produces 1,000,000 ounces.1. The Rio Tinto (Mount Bruce Mining Pty Ltd) Koodaideri Iron Ore Project is located approximately 110 km north-west of Newman in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. During detailed ecological studies of the project area, a significant maternity roost (containing around 430 individuals) of the Orange Leaf-nosed Bat (OLNB) (Rhinonicteris aurantius) was discovered within the boundaries of the proposed mining area. The OLNB is listed as Vulnerable under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and is listed as a Schedule 1 species under the Western Australian Wildlife Conservation Act 1950.With a good understanding of blast vibration attenuation in the Pilbara’s different geologies and in the absence of other known studies, it was considered that appropriate buffer distances between mining and bat colonies were not scientifically determined. Therefore, to inform the environmental approvals process that was underway, a series of seismic blasts was planned to assess and measure the sensitivity of the OLNB to trial-sized seismic blasting activities to develop a more scientifically based buffer zone for the protection of the OLNB. This was to be achieved by testing ground attenuation of the site and measuring any response from the OLNB to the firing of seismic charges. Rio Tinto sought the independent expertise of ecological consultants to evaluate and participate in the work to quantify the level of sensitivity of the bat colony and to outline the proposal to government authorities.After detailed risk assessment and project mapping, the seismic blasts were implemented, with the aim of firing individual charged and measured vector peak particle velocity (VPPV) at the OLNB roost cave, combined with monitoring OLNB disturbance activity within the roost that was invoked by the blasts. A series of six charges were fired with the VPPV ranging from 0.66 mms-1 to 18.70 mms-1. The OLNB activity was monitored using high frequency microphones, which detect bat calls emitted during flight. Under daytime conditions, the bats would normally be dormant, so the null hypothesis was for no calls to be detected if the bats displayed no disturbance behaviour. This work has improved understanding of mining activities (blasting) on the OLNB species, assisting in establishing mining exclusion zones that are based on scientific data, contributing to a sustainable future for both the environment and the mining industry.CITATION:Martin, D, 2015. This is a paper demonstrating the steps taken to combine multiple types of piles for a single site to maximize the benefits and characteristics of each method. We intend to discuss the use of grouted displacement piles in lieu of traditional pile types that were specified on an individual project. We will show how implementing this alternate pile type can both supplement and replace the originally specified pile to increase efficiency and lower costs. We will demonstrate a reduction in spoils, vibration, crew hours, and equipment size while employing methods to overcome unforeseen ground conditions.

THIS paper proposes to give a general description of the pumping and other machinery in use at the Thames Hauraki Pumping Station, situated on the Thames goldfields of the North Island, New Zealand. An idea of the general arrangement of the pumping engines and pumps can be obtained, together with a certain amount of detail, by reference to the illustrations. The history of the pump is rather interesting, and is as follows: -In 1894 the Government decided that a subsidy of £1 for £1up to an amoUllt not exceeding £25,000 be granted towards the erection of suitable machinery to exploit the Thames low levels.With a guarantee of such assistance a company was floated in London, with a capital of £300,000, to develop several properties at Thames. As the old Queen of Beauty Company had produced bullion worth £400,000 prior to closing down on account ofa breakdown to its pumping gear, their shaft was chosen as the site of the principal work. As soon as the company was floated, operations were commenced at the Queen of Beauty shaft, situated at the entrance of the Waio-Karaka Creek, and not more than about half a mile distant from the principal mines on the field.

In 1950 the Program Staff of the Department of the Interior undertook an exploratory study in the projection of energy requirements of the nation. This work was reported in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7582 by H. J. Barnett. In that preliminary study Mr. Barnett, after exploring the nature of the energy economy in some detail, evolved a method for estimating how much energy will be required in the future, based on estimates of trends in efficiency of energy utilization in specific applications, the physical output of specific energy-consuming industries, size of the population, productivity advances in the economy at large, consumer preferences, and other factors. Considerable new information was developed regarding the nature of energy demands and the possible levels of requirements for each fuel under various assumed business conditions. The study analyzed the interrelationships, including substitutions, among the fuels and emphasized the need for viewing the energy economy as an integrated albeit complex whole. This exploratory study showed a need for a single comprehensive statistical re-port that would assemble and show in a uniform manner the diverse published statistical data on energy commodities now scattered through many publications. A particularly important need was for a set of historical statistics showing the production and consumption of all energy on a B.t.u. basis. As the prospective size and nature of the future energy requirements of the nation are matters of continuing importance, this report was prepared to assist further investigations of the subject. In this report the authors undertake to assemble and present in tabular form, on a uniform basis, the production and use of each of the fuels and electric energy in the United states for three census years -1929, 1939, and 1947. The year 1947, rather than a later year, was selected because it is the most recent year for which census data are available showing the consumption of fuel by each of the manufacturing industries. It is hoped that making data for these 3 years available in one re-port will provide the needed statistical background for further studies of fuel requirements and supplies.

The underlying message of this paper is that investment in prospecting, exploration and mining in New Zealand is welcomed. The Government's policy with respect to Crown owned minerals is for continuing investment in prospecting, exploration and mining which is in accordance with good exploration or mining practice. To encourage continued investment requires a business-friendly environment. Government policies and initiatives to enhance the business environment for the minerals and coal exploration and mining industries are discussed in this paper. As well, new initiatives under consideration, which have the purpose of enhancing the investment environment, are discussed.

Namakwa Sands, a heavy minerals beneficiation business situated along the west coast of South Africa, is a major producer of titanium slag, pig iron, ceramics quality zircon and rutile concentrate to the international export market. The bulk of the economic mineralisation, which includes zircon, rutile, ilmenite and leucoxene is hosted by a late Cainozoic aeolian succession overlying remnant palaeo-strandline sediments. Relatively younger duricrust layers that cement a significant part of the generally unconsolidated ore compounds the challenging processing character of the primary mineralogy. The complex nature and hardness of the duricrust ore influence their mineability negatively, and can potentially destabilise downstream ore preparation processes. Effectively, up to ten per cent of the entire mineral resource is sterilised as the present infrastructure is not geared to treat the hard-mineralised ore. The metallurgical performance of the primary processing stage, which entails wet density separation, is strongly a function of the quality of the heavy mineral assemblage, liberation state of the economic minerals and slimes content. Elevated concentrations of garnet, a gangue contaminant exhibiting similar physical characteristics as the economic minerals, subtract substantially from the recovery performance of the secondary concentration process, which comprises mainly wet magnetic separation. By contrast, the intrinsic mineral purity of the economic fraction governs its successful recovery to saleable products as stringent product quality specifications apply. Improved mine planning through geometallurgical enhancement of the existing mineral resource model is envisaged to benefit the entire Namakwa SandsÆ mineral beneficiation chain, ultimately aiming to optimise mineral resource utilisation.

It has generally been accepted that the volatile mater in a coal is the factor that determines whether or not a specific coal dust is an explosion risk. This paper presents the results of an attempt to relate the explosibility index (Kex) of South African coals, as determined in a AD-litre explosion vessel, to the volatile mater content of the coal and the calorific value of the volatiles. A good relationship between the calorific value of the volatiles and the explosibility index was established, which makes it possible to calculate the violence of an explosion, as expressed by Kex, for South African coals. The Kex value is but one of a number of parameters that influence the explosion hazard in a specific colliery and cannot be used as the sole predictor of the propagation of an explosion underground. Other parameters include the ignitability of the coal, temperature, humidity, dispersibility of the dust, methane concentration, amount of incombustibles present, and ventilation.

THE IMPORTANCE of infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectrometry in studies of the structure of coal and similar substances is described. Special experimental techniques have been developed for these studies. Thin sections of coal are preferred, but halide pellets are easier to prepare. Information obtained from infrared spectra on chemical functional groups has been discussed; the importance of both intensities and wavelengths of absorption bands has been emphasized. Functional groups assigned include aliphatic and aromatic CH, methylene and methyl groups, hydrogen-bonded hydroxyls, hydrogen-bonded and chelated carbonyls, phenolic structures, minerals, and aromatic structures that are benzenoid or polynuclear. Infrared studies of structures of coal extracts, distillates, and reaction products of various processes, both chemical and physical, are discussed. Coallike infrared spectra of chars of model compounds have been utilized extensively in studies of coal structure. Ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra of coals show a lack of fine structure and low spectral intensities. These results have been applied to the questions of the chemical and physical structure of coal, particularly the question of polynuclear aromaticity of coals. The color of coal is also treated. The physical-chemical origin of the color of coal may be due to free radicals, as interesting correlations of ultraviolet-visible spectra with electron paramagnetic resonance have been obtained. The optical color of coal has been explained and simulation of the color changes observed in thin sections has been carried out, The spectra and structure of coal derivatives and other carbonaceous materials are also discussed. Possible sources of error in absorption spectral measurements are pointed out. Limited measurements of the ultraviolet-visible reflectance spectra of coal are described.

This report presents the results of a study of the overturning Stability of Front End Loaders and the development of an Obstacle Detector to warn of Obstacles in the blind regions of the vehicle. The contributing factors have been identified, the FEL stability characteristics have been determined and six overturn warning indicators were fabricated and two were field tested in a mine operation over an extended time period. A simplified overturn indicator, based on the principle of sensing wheel load, was designed, constructed and field tested. The principle was demonstrated to be sound, however, the method of sensing wheel load must be revised. An obstacle detector capable of detecting a man sized target at ranges of two feet to one hundred feet was designed. A "Breadboard" device utilizing existing microwave devices was constructed and tested successfully.

"Rare earth elements (REE) are essential and unique components of many high-technology products without which functioning of modern society would be greatly impaired. Commercial deposits of REE are limited to a few geographical locations. Largely untapped sources of REE are available in endof- life (EOL) magnets, rechargeable batteries, and electronics. Presently, < 1% of REE in EOL wastes is recycled. Conversion of EOL wastes to liquid streams allows use of IBC’s Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT) process to selectively recover, separate, and purify target REE and associated metals at g/L to mg/L or lower concentration levels. The MRT process together with its applications to separations of REE and associated metals in recycling as well as in mining are described. Economic and environmental advantages of MRT are presented. INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements (REE) include the lanthanide series (La-Lu), Y, and Sc. These elements are not rare, but concentrated minable deposits are scarce (Cordier 2012; Haxel, Hedrick, & Orris, 2002). Over 95 % of the world’s supply of REE is controlled by China (Hanson, 2011a) where they are mined, processed, and the pure elements incorporated into a growing number of consumer and military products. The consumer products are marketed worldwide. Since REE are vitally important in consumer and military products, this situation has caused other nations to scramble to develop the capability to produce their own supply (Cordier, 2012).In the U. S., Molycorp has reopened the Mountain Pass REE mine in California and production has begun (Goldenberg, 2010). Development of a reliable internal source of REE is of high national priority in the U.S. (Hanson, 2011b; Hess, 2012: “Obama Announces”, 2012). These elements have in recent decades been incorporated into new consumer and military products that are essential to our economy and defense. These products range from wind turbines, high performance magnets, hybrid car rechargeable batteries, energy efficient lighting electronics, flat screen televisions, and smart phones to advanced weapons systems (Haxel et al., 2002; Levkowitz & Beauchamp-Mustafaga, 2010)."

The program, aimed at reducing noise in mines, is functionally divided into three major areas: Instrumentation, personal protection, and noise abatement. This proceedings contains the opening remarks to the seminar and seven technical presentations based on various aspects of noise abatement and control.

The largest known platinum group metal (PGM) deposit in the world is the Bushveld Complex in South Africa, with the Great Dyke in Zimbabwe also being one of the biggest. It is therefore not surprising that the majority (just over 5 million troy ounces or 156 metric tons per annum) of the world&apos;s platinum is produced in Southern Africa. Primary smelting of ore concentrates is carried out in that region by five companies, namely Anglo Platinum, Impala Platinum, Lonmin Platinum, Northam Platinum, all of South Africa, and Makwiro Platinum in Zimbabwe. The only other primary smelter of platinum group metals is Stillwater Mining of Montana, USA, although very significant quantities of PGMs are produced as co-products by Norilsk Nickel of Russia. Smaller (but still significant) quantities of PGMs are produced by Falconbridge and Inco of Canada, also as co-products from nickel sulphide smelting. There are many similarities between PGM smelting and nickel sulphide smelting, and the range of technologies in use includes six-in-line rectangular electric furnaces, three-electrode circular AC furnaces, Peirce-Smith converters, and Anglo&apos;s ACP (based on Ausmelt technology). PGMs are also recovered from residue materials using DC arc furnace technology.

The US economy continued to grow steadily in 1988, reaching an annual rate of $5 trillion in the last quarter (US trillion = 1012). The value of domestically processed mineral-based materi¬als rose 20% to $300 billion (US billion 109). The value of metals produced from US ores rose 40% to more than $10 billion, industrial minerals rose 6%&apos; to $20 billion, and recycled scrap more than doubled to $10 billion. Increasing economic activity stimulated metal prices. Yearly lows and highs were 95 cents and $1.68 for copper, 52 cents, and $1.30 for aluminum, 34 cents and 42 cents for lead, and 43 cents and 75 cents for zinc. A number of mining and metal companies experienced significantly increased profitability. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is relatively saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and Federal debt continued to rise. About 246 million US citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production remained at the 1987 level of 7.1 million units. Truck and bus production, however, rose 7% to 4.1 million units. New housing starts fell 7% to 1.5 million units. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials. By year-end, imports of crude and refined petroleum exceeded domestic crude oil production. Such imports cost $42 billion. Imports of nonfuel mineral-based materials were valued at $44 billion and exports at $35 billion. The US and Canada-the world&apos;s two largest trading partners-consummated a historic free trade agreement. In February, President Reagan transferred responsibility for stockpiling strategic and critical materials to the Secretary of Defense. And, in July, the GSA group that bought, stored, rotated, and sold stockpiled materials was transferred to the Defense Department&apos;s Defense Logistics Agency. Concern about apartheid in South Africa continued, resulting in increasing attention to chromium, manganese, platinum-group metals, cobalt, vanadium, and gold. The Defense Production Act, authorizing priorities and allocations, supply expansions, voluntary agreements, and the National Defense Executive Reserve, was amended to include provisions for averting harm to national security from foreign takeovers. The DPAct, in effect through September 1989, is now up for further extension. Under the Act, the US Bureau of Mines maintains the Emergency Minerals Administration. During the year, consultations were held with Canada to strengthen the North American Defense Industrial Base. Coal production, 60% from open pits, rose 5% to 870 Mt (960 million st). Nearly four-fifths was burned to generate 57% of US electricity. Exports included 56 Mt (62 million st) of metallur- gical coal and 29 Mt (32 million st) of steam coal, with a total value of $4 billion. Domestic petroleum produc¬tion fell 2% to 574 hm3 (3.6 billion bbl). Uranium mining, including recovery from phosphates, was unchanged at 5.9 kt (6500 st). Nonfuel minerals Major metals Raw steel production-a major con¬sumer of many minerals-rose 14% to 92 Mt (102 million st). Domestic iron ore production rose 25% to 59 Mt (65 million st), about 96% pelletized. Net imports rose 37% to 16 Mt (18 million st). Raw steelmaking capacity of 102 Mt (112 million st) was unchanged. Voluntary Restraint Agreements with 21 steel exporting nations limited im¬port penetration to about 20% of the domestic market. The three major objectives of this contract were (1) to survey underground diesel-powered mining machinery to determine noise exposure problems, (2) to recommend noise control techniques, and (3) to develop a technique for predicting underground sound levels from surface sound power measurements. The objectives were achieved. The contractor developed information on the severity of the noise problem caused by diesel engines underground and pinpointed the equipment causing the problems. He recommended a number of corrective techniques that can provide relief until long-term solutions are found. A procedure for predicting underground noise levels from above-ground measurements of the machine noise was found valid for several cases tested.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority(WMATA) officially came into existence in February 1967 after the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia joined in a com¬pact pursuant to Federal creative legislation signed the previous November to build a regional rapid rail transit system called METRO (1). The parent organization was the National Capital Transportation Agency (NCTA), a Federal agency, subject to Federal statutes and regulations. Soon after the completion of the transition from NCTA to the new "non-Federal" status of the Authority, the Board of Directors of the Authority formally adopted procurement policies and procedures (2). These are specific statements concerning competition by formal advertising for bids or by solicitation of proposals for negotiation, contracting authority, approval of awards, awards of contract modifications, and processing of claims and disputes. These policies and procedures are silent as to Federal procurement statutes and regulations. But because of the Authority&apos;s origin, the sensitive nature of the compact among the several sovereign jurisdictions, Federal financing of two-thirds of the costs, and the resultant surveillance by the General Accounting Office over staff operations, the Authority&apos;s procurement practices follow closely Federal regulations adapted to WMATA&apos;s needs. This is an important point and is the foundation of contractual relations between the Authority as the owner and its construction contractors. Various constraints and flexibilities of this arrangement with respect to excavation and tunneling contracts will be pointed out in the ensuing discussions.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a system that permits the "soft" soldering of aluminum and aluminum alloys with standard tin-lead solders. The method employs application of a thin nickel-copper-alloy coating to the substrate, which enables the tin-lead solders to wet readily and spread over the areas to be joined. With conventional technology, aluminum and aluminum alloys are extremely difficult to solder because tenacious surface oxide films prevent wetting. With the Bureau-developed method, the aluminum substrate is mechanically or chemically cleaned to facilitate bonding to a minute layer of zinc that is subsequently applied with an electroless zincate solution. The nickel-copper-alloy (30 to 70 pct Ni) coating is then applied electrolytically over the zinc, using immersion cell or brush-coating techniques. Development of acetate electrolytes has permitted deposition of the proper alloy coatings. The coated areas can then be readily joined with conventional tin-lead solders and fluxes. The joints so formed are ductile, strong, and relatively corrosion resistant, and exhibit strengths equivalent to those formed on copper and brass when the same solders and fluxes are used. The method has also been employed to soft-solder magnesium alloys.
