In his account of the Thackaringa sulphide ore, Lawrence (p. 92) reports the presence of valleriite as a minor accessory in chalcopyrite. He says that it is readily identified by its intensive anisotrophy and reflection pleochroism. He also gives (p. 87) the chemical formula as Cu8Fe4S7 Recent work by Evans et al. (1964), Chamberlain and Delabio (1965), and Schidlowski and Otteman (1966) suggests that most material identified as valleriite is, in fact, mackinawite. Mackinawite and valleriite are both extremely anisotropic and strongly reflection pleochroic, and so with fine-grained material it would be hard to distinguish them optically.Mackinawite, according to Evans et al. (p. D66) is a copper-free iron sulphide (PeS) with small quantities of nickel, whereas valleriite is considered to be a dimorph of chalcopyrite (CuPeS2 ). They found that mackinawite is much more widespread than valleriite, and, unlike the latter mineral, is commonly included in other sulphides, particularly chalcopyrite.Lawrence (p. 92) states that the valleriite inclusions are up to 0·01 mm long, so that an electron probe microanalysis should be quite feasible and provide a ready answer to this query.L. First in a projected series on the use of flexible liners for support of underground mine openings, this report presents information obtained from an extensive review of the literature on this subject. It also includes results of some preliminary test work by the Bureau of Mines. Investigations thus far indicate that flexible liners offer numerous advantages over rigid-type sup-ports, By deforming in the direction of the applied stress, the stresses are redistributed from the liner to the surrounding material. The corresponding buildup of passive resistance in the direction of diametric extension causes an equalization of stresses around the liner, thereby enabling the liner to carry loads in a more efficient manner. However, additional experimental data are needed to establish design criteria that will permit maximum utilization of the flexible liner concept in mining. Testing of small-scale models, accompanied by measurement of free-field stresses in material surrounding the model, is recommended as the most suit-able approach to the problem. The experimental procedures necessary to such an approach are outlined in detail and a statistical design for the experiments is proposed. The report also describes a device developed by the Bureau for measuring free-field soil pressures to 1,000 psi and a technique for evaluating the response of the device.

This report gives the result of investigations of coals of different rank, coal com¬ponents, chemically and thermally treated and irradiated coals, and sedimented organic matter. In most studies the arbitrary parameters obtained from the usual quantitative profile analyses are not given largely because they lack physical meaning. Instead comp interpretations are offered. X-ray patterns of high-volatile bituminous and lower rank coals are not self¬-sufficient for structural interpretation by the methods of analysis developed to date. The patterns of hydrogenated and dehydrogenated coals indicate that the basic change in the structure of bituminous coals with increase in rank is the conversion of alicyclic structures into aromatic layers. In low-rank anthracites the aromatic layers are about 10 A in size. The increase in rank is the result of coalescence of layers. High-rank anthracites have layer sizes of 25 to 40 A and exhibit the development of three-dimensional (hkl) reflections of graphite, indicating ordering of adjacent layers. In meta-anthracites the layers are > 1000 A and the basic structure is that of defective crystalline graphite. The well-known petrographic components in low-rank coals have different structures; the differences dissappear in low-volatile bituminous and higher rank coals. The patterns of sedimented organic matter, except impsonites, differ from those of coal hydrogen contents are high, and their X-ray patterns are consistent with those of structures. In contrast to normal coals, the patterns of uranium-bearing coals show increased diffuseness with decrease in hydrogen content. The diffuseness is accompanied by increase in the uranium content of the coal. It is very likely that high uranium-bearing coals have predominantly tetrahedral structures.

ABSTRACT The scheduling of underground mining activities is a complex task that must simultaneously satisfy a large number of constraints. A schedule optimization tool (SOT) for underground mine planning is described, and its use for investigating strategic decisions is illustrated through a case study. The maincomponents of the SOT include (a) a genetic algorithm that searches for optimal schedules, (b) guidance for the application of heuristic rules, and (c) sliding, which implements just-in-time development. Findings indicated that preliminary scheduling performed before invoking the SOT, intended to provide a good starting point for the search, did not ultimately lead to higher value schedules.

"The efficiency of the truck-shovel haulage system is significantly influenced by the truck fleet size. A discrete event simulation model with 3D animation has been developed to estimate the productivity of a truck-shovel network system, shovel efficiency, truck cycle time, truck utilisation and the optimal fleet size. The simulation model considers the dynamic variability of traffic conditions and also the truck as an individual entity. The Runruno Gold Project is located on the island of Luzon, approximately 200 miles north of Manilla in the Philippines. The mine is an open cut operation and uses the proven BIOX® and carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes to recover gold, and the ASTER™ process for detoxification of the CIL residue prior to discharge to the Residue Storage Impoundment (RSI). Work to date has defined a mineral resource of 1.39 million ounces (Moz) of gold, and the operation will produce 96 700 oz of gold per annum over a mine life of 10.4 years. The BIOX circuit is designed to treat 140 000 t/y of concentrate with a design capacity of 404 t/d of concentrate at a design sulfide sulfur grade of 17% S2-.The Runruno BIOX Plant is the first application of the Outotec BIOX Generation III design principles, focussing on ease of operation and maintainability. During development and implementation, the project team focussed on identifying opportunities to optimise the capital efficiency while not compromising on the operability or overall efficiency of the process or the equipment. The BIOX plant also incorporates the latest developments in the design of the BIOX agitators for more efficient mixing and gas dispersion. This paper will discuss some of the critical aspects and decisions taken during the development and implementation of the BIOX Process at the Runruno Gold Project. The paper will highlight some of the factors affecting the commissioning process as well as the improvements seen through the introduction of the Generation III BIOX design principles. Marble is one of tile most beautiful and enduring materials employed in the construction industries. Because of its diverse colors, decorative patterns, and varying textures, it has furnished material for artistic architectural design for many centuries. The marble industry is described in some detail in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 106, The Technology of Marble Quarrying, which, unfortunately, is now out of print but may be consul ted at most large libraries. Onyx marble and travertine are discussed in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6751. The purpose of this paper is to describe the main features of a distinctive group of ornamental marbles known as the serpentine marbles or verde antiques.

The knowledge of the final location of a drillhole is critical in obtaining the expected blasting results. This paper proposes a new methodology to control the drilling accuracy in open-pit mines using aerial images and machine learning. Specifically, it investigates how support vector machines (SVM) and convolutional neural networks (CNN) are useful for automatically detecting blastholes over drone images captured in blasting patterns. Several datasets were obtained from different mines in Nevada (USA) and were used to train and test models. We then processed those images to create orthomosaic and digital elevation representations of the patterns. Thousands of patches were then extracted and augmented to develop SVM and CNN models. The results demonstrate that machine learning is useful for drillhole detection and, in this way, to control the drilling accuracy and use the explosive energy more efficiently.

This report summarizes a Bureau of Mines study on the use of geotechnology to identify and reduce ground control hazards at slate quarry operations in eastern Pennsylvania. The major ground control hazard is falling rock, attributed to weathered bedding plane faults, which weaken quarry highwalls. It was demonstrated that these faults can be detected outside of the quarry perimeter using surface resistivity measurements. Falls of ice from quarry highwalls constitute a second major hazard, which requires water diversion as a basic control method. In situ stresses seemingly cause only minor problems in slate extraction although they could interact with developed stresses and lead to failure of barriers between quarries. Pull tests showed that rockbolts anchor firmly in slate and should prove effective in securing loose rock.

Since the discovery in 1935 by Adams and Holmes that certain synthetic resins exhibit ion-exchange properties, many applications of the ion-exchange process have been made. There are two general types of ion-exchange resins. Cation exchange resins adsorb cations from solution, and these in turn may be replaced by other cations adsorbed under certain conditions. 'Anion exchange resins adsorb acids from solution, and the anion of the acid may then be replaced by other anions. It is reported, however, that certain anion exchange resins have a low capacity for anions of weak acids without the necessity of acid adsorption either directly or as an intermediate step. The adsorbed ions may then be removed from the resins by elution with an appropriate solution, and the resin is prepared for the next adsorption cycle by regeneration with another solution. Sometimes one solution, is used to simultaneously perform the functions of elution and regeneration. The first and probably the largest application is in the field of water purification. Other applications have been made in the production of high-quality foods for human consumption, in the recovery of valuable substances from solutions, in the separation or fractionation of electrolytes, and in several other fields, each of which has its specific applications, variations, and possibilities. Ion exchange resins also have been highly useful in perfecting techniques of laboratory analysis and research.4/, 5/, 6/

Ultrafine copper, gold and silver minerals flotation has become increasingly important because of the rising demand for processing finely disseminated ores. This paper investigates the improved flotation of ultrafine ores from a Troilus Gold project. Troilus is primarily an Au-Cu deposit but contains minor amounts of Ag, Zn and Pb, as well as traces of Bi, Te, and Mo. As a result of ultrafine Cu-Au-Ag dissemination and associated grinding requirements, Eriez’ column/StackCell and Denver benchtop cells were utilized to optimize their respective flotation responses. Enhanced flotation results were achieved using column and StackCell technologies. KAX 51 and SPRI 206 collectors, Na2SO3, and ZnSO4 depressants were the primary reagents employed. In column/StackCell flotation of three main mineral deposit ore composites, the rougher-scavenger-cleaner circuit Cu, Au and Ag flotation recoveries were 90.4~95.8% at a copper grade of 13.6-17.4%, 87.5-95.1% at a gold grade of 101-145.9 g/t, and 88.6-91.8% at a silver grade of 62.6-251.4 g/t, respectively. The benefits of Eriez Column/StackCell flotation technologies include high flotation selectivity and increased recovery due to unique hydrodynamic designs. Specifically, the StackCell design facilitates high turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rates to improve fine particle recovery and incorporates countercurrent wash water to significantly reduce hydraulic entrainment of the finest size gangue minerals to the froth product.

Editor's note: This is the first of two articles on maintenance. Part two, "Effective maintenance downsizing techniques," will appear in the October issue of MINING ENGINEERING. Most mine managers are aware that the cost of maintenance rarely goes down unless work is done less often and with fewer people. Fewer people translates into downsizing and seldom means making maintenance more efficient. Even so, mines that have struggled unsuccessfully to improve maintenance and are now pressed to reduce maintenance costs may opt for downsizing. On the other hand, mines with an immediate need to reduce costs may be forced to downsize because they cannot wait for needed improvements to take effect. This can be bad news for maintenance. In any case, the mine must downsize correctly to ensure effective maintenance is sustained.

"IntroductionTITANIUM is probably the most widely publicized metal today. Much has been written, both in the lay press and the technical press, about its properties and potentialities. In view of the fact that Canada possesses large quantities of titanium-bearing ore, and could conceivably become a major producer of metallic titanium, it was felt that a paper dealing mainly with the physical metallurgy of titanium would be of interest to this Institute. This paper is concerned chiefly with the useful properties of titanium and its alloys and the fundamentals governing the modification of its properties by alloying.Physical Properties of TitaniumTitanium belongs to a family of metals that have been termed 'gas sensitive' (I), because their mechanical properties are altered by certain gases which they readily absorb and retain. Other metals of this group are zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, columbium, tantalum, and chromium. Titanium has a strong affinity for oxygen and nitrogen and once it has absorbed these gases they cannot be removed either by melting in vacuum or by any degassing agent. These gases, when present in excess of about half a per cent oxygen plus nitrogen, render the metal brittle and useless as a structural material.Some of the typical physical properties of titanium are listed in Table I along with those of common structural metals for comparison."

The Isasmelt process was developed at Mount Isa Mines Limited in Queensland, Australia in collaboration with CSIRO, the Australian Government research organisation. Originally developed for primary lead smelting, culminating in the construction of a 60,000 tonnes per annum lead smelter at Mount Isa, this technology now also provides a major part of the current 200,000 tonnes per annum copper smelting capacity at Mount Isa. A programme is now in place to expand copper production to 250,000 tonnes per annum. The technology has also been applied to secondary lead smelting at Britannia Refined Metals, a MIM subsidiary company, where a 30,000 tonnes per annum lead plant based on battery scrap feed has been operating since 1991. Mount Isa Mines Limited decided to license the technology in1988, and copper smelting plants utilising Isasmelt technology are now operated by Cyprus Miami Mining Corporation in the USA and by Sterlite Industries in India. In addition, the technology was adopted by AGIP for smelting copper/nickel concentrates in Australia. Union Miniere are currently constructing an Isasmelt furnace to smelt and convert copper-containing materials at their plant at Hoboken in Belgium. This paper discusses these developments and also some likely future developments which include the application of the technology for continuous copper and nickel converting and applications in the treatment of zinc-containing residues.

The proposed EU directive on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment promotes the substitution of lead in consumer electronics to reduce emissions from lead in the end of life phase. In this paper, the consequences of substituting lead in solders is assessed using the Eco-Indicator-99 method for the examples. The base metal production system is considered as an interconnected network modeled dynamically in Simulink 4 and Matlab 6 (Mathworks Inc 2000), where the recovery and production of metal components of the assessed product partially overlap. This approach requires global modeling of metal production processes and mass balances and resulting allocation choices. It also reveals the susceptibility of LCA scores to different choices in the modeling and data availability and uncertainty. Besides the comparison between lead-free and lead-containing solders, other side effects are revealed. Lead is carrier material for the recycling and production of many co-elements in the interconnected production and recovery system. Substitution may have adverse effects such as temporary shortages of other connected metals that are often not considered in normal LCA assessments, thus leading to erroneous results. The suggested approach provides directions for including these extemal effects and for further assessment of the environmental effects of substituting lead. This paper shows that in order to assess the environmental aspects of metallurgy, dynamic modeling of the total system is required based on the fundamental thermodynamics in each metallurgical reactor, the basis of this dynamic model. With this the true environmental impact of metallurgy can be explained. In the case of lead free solder, it is shown that the mining of substitutes has a very much larger impact.

Of the world's total production of gold the largest proportion comes from the more regularly consistent ore bodies, but in the aggregate an important part comes from those which are often irregular, uncertain and small. These smaller ore bodies are often high in grade and, as the capital required to work them is not large, they appeal to people seeking a quick and profitable return for a small outlay.These small mining concerns cannot afford detailed geological and petrological investigations and mapping, so they are very often dependent on local knowledge and experience which admittedly may be of really great value.Nevertheless the absence of skilled guidance may not only cause good opportunities for intelligent exploration to be lost, but discourage the seach for other ore bodies.lVIining engineers in the course of their travels in the examination of mines often come across such cases and also others where problems of finding lost ore bodies have been solved by the man on the spot. As records of cases are valuable and useful additions to the knowledge of ore occurrences, the writer now proposes to describe one such case coming under his observation in recent years.It is that of a small mine, known as the Idaho, at the southern end of the famous "Golden Mile" at Kalgoorlie (see Fig. 1). This mine has been a small and very erratic producer ever since it was abandoned by an English company which owned it forty years ago. "In modem concentrators, the operation of flotation machines is often stabilized by simple control loops. Froth level, slurry density and aeration rate are all physical parameters typically controlled through classical PID loops. Few concentrators, however make use of advanced computing technologies for controlling the grade of flotation product streams. Technical challenges such as long process delay and the long and uneven sampling interval of on-stream XRF analyzers often restrain their implementation. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is known to have better performance than PID for controlling processes with long delays (such as flotation circuits). This paper describes the implementation of a multi-input/single-output (MISO) MPC algorithm and an FIR model identification routine using an object-oriented graphical computing environment.The MPC module (controller and identification) was implemented on an industrial control system and applied to many sulfide flotation circuits in the Brunswick Mining concentrator (New Brunswick, Canada). In most cases, the manipulated variable was the collector addition. As long as it is provided with decent process models, the performance of the MPC controller is good on all the flotation circuits on which it was applied. Significant reductions of grade variance are reported and the controller responds well to set-point changes. The user-friendly, graphical nature of the computing environment led to a high degree of acceptance by both the process engineers and the flotation operators.1. INTRODUCTIONOver the past three decades, much instrumentation has been developed for flotation machines. The introduction of instruments such as pulp density gauges and cell level probes was particularly well received by the plants where pneumatic and electronic controllers were available for implementing PID control loops. Como parte de los estudios línea base realizados por MWH Perú S.A. para el proyecto aurífero Chucapaca de las Canteras del Hallazgo en el distrito de Ichuña de la región Moquegua, Perú, se investigó el origen de boro, alta salinidad y otros componentes que perjudican la aptitud de los ríos Ichuña y Tambo para irrigación y otros usos. En este sentido, se encontró que la calidad de agua es perjudicada principalmente por altas concentraciones de sodio, entre otros, precipitándose como hidróxidos de estos metales debido al pH neutro en el río. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe la relación de este impacto químico con los manantiales entre el Cerro Chucapaca y el cañón del Río Ichuña/ Alto Tambo, ubicados al Norte de Moquegua, donde presentan la característica distribución de diferentes tipos de aguas volcanogénicas sobre un sistema de convección hidrotermal de agua meteórica profunda reciclada, calentada y movida por una cámara magmática andesítica que aporta calor y gases.

"Energy efficiency in mining and minerals processing forms part of Mintek’s long-term research strategy which includes a specific programme designed at overcoming the challenges faced by the South African pyrometallurgy industry.The electric smelting industry is currently severely constrained by the global economic downturn as well as by the availability and increasing cost of electricity. Efficient utilisation of electricity through energy recovery systems and improved smelting process flowsheets can significantly contribute towards creating sustainable operations.Apart from efficient engineering design and solid process control, smelting of either cold or hot pre-reduced ores has been shown to decrease furnace electricity consumption by more than 40%. Various methods of solid-state reduction tests have been carried out at Mintek in order to select the most appropriate process option in the context of the South African industry. This paper summarises a subset of the results obtained, specifically on pre-reduction tests done on South African chromite and manganese ore pellets.In this set of tests, it was found that the use of an organic binder, together with B2O3 as flux, promotes manganese ore pre-reduction, but retards the pre-reduction of chromite. By pre-reducing the manganese ore feed, significant cost savings can be achieved in subsequent smelting processes and there is potential to minimise manganese losses as a result of fuming, due to possible lower operating temperatures."

To meet escalating energy requirements, substantial increases in production from the strippable coal and lignite deposits in eastern Montana, western North Dakota, and northeastern Wyoming already have occurred, and further expansions are expected at least until the year 2000. Such production, attributable largely to rising demand for low-sulfur coal, must be accomplished with a minimum of adverse effects on the environment. Information on geology, climate, and current land use in the Upper Missouri River basin is presented in the Bureau of Mines review as a guideline to what operators may expect during and after mining. Proven methods of protecting the air and water from pollution and of restoring mined land for other uses are described, and untried methods of land reclamation, some with equipment yet to be manufactured, are discussed as possible means of maintaining aesthetic values in the basin. Costs incurred to protect the environment are part of the production cost and thus are borne by the ultimate consumer. Unit production costs are less for the thick coal and lignite deposits of the basin than for the thinner but higher Btu coal deposits of the Eastern and Midwestern United States. Precise comparisons of environmental protection costs between mines in such disparate areas cannot be made, because of differences in physical conditions, accounting procedures, and other variables.
