In a study of the principal factors affecting the transport of coal-water mixtures through a centrifugal pump and a pipeline, the interrelation between solids concentration, velocity, and pressure drop was established for a bituminous lump coal (minus 2 inch) in concentrations up to 48 weight-percent. An optimum concentration was found to exist for maximum capacity of a given pipe-line, and for minimum energy requirements per ton of coal. Coal size degradation by particle fracture took place in the pump; abrasion and attrition to form fines took place in both pump and line. A novel system of studying flow of solid-liquid mixtures in pipelines by the determination of relative sound intensities was developed.

Watershed Jll in Jefferson County, Ohio we instrumented in 1977 as one of three watersheds established for the purpose of investigating surface mining and reclamation effects upon local hydrology, sediment discharge, and sediment and water quality. Each watershed was less than 50-acres in size, and was in a different geologic setting within southeastern Ohio. Surface runoff and ground¬water levels were monitored. Samples were taken for sediment determination and chemical analysis prior to mining. Monitoring and sampling continued through the period of watershed disturbance caused by mining and reclamation activities, which began in May 1980 at Watershed Jll. A psuedo-postreclamation period followed the initial cessation of man-machine activity on the watershed. A second reclamation effort occurred in the fall of 1981 and was to be followed by a third in 1982 after observations ceased. A true final postreclamation period was not monitored at this site, because the erosion control practice (terrace diversions) failed after each reclamation. Watershed Jll was a small pasture and wooded watershed with sandstone and shale above the mined coal seam prior to mining. A clay layer under the coal supported a perched saturated zone, termed the top aquifer for convenience. A lower underclay supported a second saturated zone called the middle aquifer. A lower perched aquifer had been dewatered by previous deep mining. After about three years of premine data and about two and one-half years of mining reclamation and psuedo-postreclamation data, the following general observations may be made: 1. The mining-reclamation phase was very short, and the postmining period was characterized by erosion failures and remedial disturbances that kept the watershed condition and size in a state of change. It was impossible to collect sufficient data to confidently characterize the hydrologic-sediment-chemical aspects of the mining period or of a postreclamation period and, most importantly, of the future watershed after its various properties and characteristics have ceased adjusting to its severe disturbance and reconstitution. 2. A seeding of wheat followed by grasses and legumes was not a particularly successful reclamation practice in terms of stabilizing the new soil. Numerous rills and small gullies developed in spite of installed diversions. 3. Storm runoff rates and yields at the watershed outlet increased from the premine, (phase 1) to the mining-reclamation (Phase 2) periods, and remained at or near the Phase 2 level through the postreclamation (Phase 3a) period. 4. The top aquifer changed in physical and chemical character as a result of mining and was becoming reestablished as the project drew to a close; but it is impossible to predict its final configuration or character. 5. Dewatering of the top aquifer resulted in a complete cessation of baseflow because the middle aquifer water table lay below the elevation of the watershed outlet. 6. The top and middle aquifers were merged in one area of the watershed where the upper coal underclay was disturbed. 7. Failure of the diversion terraces and their outlet obscured the effects of the reclamation practice upon sediment concentration and yields. There was little difference in sediment concentrations between Phases 2 and 3a. 8. Drinking water standards were met by surface waters throughout the period of observation except for two samples that exceeded the nitrate-N allowable level of 10 mg/l. 9. In all Phase 3 surface-water samples, iron concentrations were within the limits established by OSM, and manganese concentrations exceeded the regulation level only once. pH fell below the lower regulation level of 6.0 between 10% and 20% of the time. 10. The chemical quality of sediments was generally about the same after reclamation as before mining, with the exception of organic carbon, which decreased.

The smelter building at Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex, Iran, houses two reverberatory furnaces and five Pierce-Smith converters. Under normal operating conditions SO2 emissions fill the building, posing a major health problem for all workers in the building, and reducing their ability to maintain the plant. The converter fume extraction system was analysed using plant measurements, engineering modelling of the entire system and CFD modelling of the extraction hoods. By applying fundamental engineering concepts, a user-interactive computer program was developed that enabled plant engineers and operators to gain a detailed understanding of the system. In conjunction with plant measurements, the model quantified the amount of inleakage throughout the system, identifying it as a significant contributor to the poor extraction performance. Furthermore, it enabled investigation of the effects of hood gates, converters on line, hood dampers, flue insulation, electrostatic precipitator (ESP) operation, and inclusion of an acid plant. The model gave unprecedented insight into the operation of a counterintuitive buoyancy-driven extraction system.

Horizontal holes are drilled underground into coalbeds to control methane flow from ribs and active face areas and to make gas pressure measurements in coalbeds. Gas pressure measurements are made by drilling the same hole incrementally. After each increment, the hole is filled with some type of packers and allowed to reach equilibrium before a gas pressure reading is taken. As the length of hole increases, more packers are required to effect a seal and obtain a reliable pressure measurement. Problems have been encountered in obtaining satisfactory packer seals due to the friable nature of the coalbed. New methods of packing the holes must be used. Therefore, this project was established to evaluate materials and develop a new technique in which a semiliquid and/ or rigid type grout could be placed in the hole to provide satisfactory sealing.

Sabe-se que a presença de ultrafinos em plantas de beneficiamento de minérios pode comprometer a eficiência dos processos principalmente os de flotação, uma vez que fenômenos como o slime coating e o arraste hidrodinâmico das partículas ocorrem fortemente. Além disso, concentrados contendo uma proporção significativa de ultrafinos terão dificuldade de serem filtrados gerando tortas de alta umidade. Este trabalho teve por objetivo estudar o efeito do dispersante AGLP consumido atualmente na planta de beneficiamento da Votorantim Metais Vazante, na flotação do minério silicatado de zinco e avaliar o efeito da sua dosagem na umidade do concentrado final produzido. Para tanto foi realizada a caracterização granulométrica das amostras e conduzidos testes de bancada de sedimentação, filtração e flotação em diferentes dosagens de AGLP. Como era de se esperar, os resultados identificaram que o concentrado de granulometria mais grosseira obteve melhor sedimentação e umidade. Já os testes de flotação indicaram que a dosagem ótima do dispersante em torno de 400g/t garante um concentrado de qualidade, sem perda de recuperação metalúrgica e com umidade adequada para que seja transportado.

This report presents a method of utilizing the Coulomb strength criteria for estimating the strength and stability of pillars and pit slopes containing planes of weakness. It is assumed that the Coulomb theory, as a special case of the Mohr envelope, is a satisfactory first approximation of failure in uniaxial compression or triaxial loading with low lateral loads. Accepting this assumption for brittle materials, an expression for the strength decrease of rock pillars containing a plane of weakness or fracture at any angle of orientation is derived. As few as six samples (three solid cores and three fractured cores at a failure-oriented angle) are required for testing uniaxially and triaxially to statistically determine the coefficients of friction and the shear strengths of both the solid rock and the fracture plane and the range of failure angles of the fracture plane. Interpretation of the data shows that the mean normal stress and maximum shear stress technique of analyzing the data is superior for solid core and that shear and normal stress values using angles of failure should be used for fractured specimens with failure-oriented angles. Plots of either the strength or strength ratios against fracture angles obtained from oriented drill core samples give a useful first approximation of strength decrease due to fracture. Using the same test conditions for both fractured and unfractured material increases the validity of the tests.

The concept of mine safety is highlighted in the literature of sustainable mining but not extensively discussed. This study analyzes various aspects of underground and surface mine safety and emphasizes its importance in the context of sustainable mining. More specifically, this research attempts to find the relationship between mine hazards and demographic characteristics, examine and compare the perceptual difference among miners, and determine the impact of mine hazards on workplace safety and safety climate. Descriptive analysis, chi-square test, independent samples t test, and linear regression modeling were conducted to achieve study objectives. Results confirmed that mine hazards were significantly associated with age and experience. Miners perceived lower levels of management safety practices, followed by supervisor safety, coworker safety, and job safety. The analysis showed that underground miners reported lower safety scores than surface miners. There was a statistically significant difference between miners’ perception of safety climate (p < 0.05). The results showed that the higher prevalence of mine hazards predicts poor workplace safety and a low safety climate. The regression models revealed that mine hazards have a significant effect on workplace safety (p < 0.05) and safety climate (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the distinctive model of mine safety presented here contributes to the monitoring and design of comprehensive safety interventions and helps to better understand how certain factors interact on multiple levels to influence the overall safety of the industry. In this study, some suggestions are put forward to provide directions to develop a sustainable mine safety system.

This report describes laboratory studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines on the spontaneous combustion of U.S. coals. Approximately 11 pet of U.S. underground coal mine fires are attributed to spontaneous combustion. The relative self-heating tendencies of 24 coal samples were evaluated in an adiabatic heating oven. Minimum self-heating temperatures (SHT&apos;s) in the oven ranged from 350 C for a lignite and high-volatile C bituminous (hvCb) coal, to 1350 C for two low-volatile bituminous (lvb) coals. An empirical expression was determined predicting a bituminous coal&apos;s minimum SHT in the adiabatic oven based on the coal&apos;s dry ash-free oxygen content. Several factors that can affect the self-heating process were also evaluated. The self-~eating tendency of a coal increased when the coal was dried and exposed to humidified air, and was dependent on the particle size and oxygen concentration of the air. A new moderate-scale apparatus is described, in which the self-heating tendencies of larger coal samples, 3 kg, can be evaluated. The minimum SHT&apos;s of two coals were determined and the results were in good agreement with those found in the adiabatic oven. Finally, results of a test in the moderate-scale apparatus indicated a strong dependence of the self-heating rate of a low rank coal on the moisture content of the air.

Mines and plants for sale, downsizing, bankruptcies, consolidation, slab imports, minimill growth displacing traditional integrated steel-making. These are some issues for North American iron ore and integrated steel producers. But the blast furnace still remains the workhorse of the ironmaking industry. And direct reduction and other alternate ironmaking technologies have yet to make any serious inroads in North America. How come? This article addresses the current state of primary ironmaking in the changing North American steel industry, the direct reduction market and new technologies under development that may hold some promise.

The operation of Quarry and Aggregate sites are similar to factory production, since it contains sequential production processes, tasks and activities to produce the output product. Compared to the plant though, the quarry processes are generally not synchronized and controlled towards the overall throughput of the site in real time. Some quarries control parts of the production but do generally not utilize real-time technologies for the whole site and all its activities. This fact indicates a general improvement potential in increased productivity at quarry sites, but also unsolved challenges for the same reason. The main contribution of this paper is the presentation of a Lean based method for how to describe the processes to identify control improvement potential within a site. The aim of the identified improvements is to increase overall site productivity by optimizing site, fleet and machine utilization towards the overall throughput, and minimizing operational expenses and inventories. Further the paper exemplifies the method?s usability with field studies at operational quarry plants successfully identifying and quantifying potential wastes and improvements. In addition the identified productivity improvements based on increased control and automation indicate challenges and needs in wireless communication and sensing technologies.

"A great deal of effort has been expended in the last 11 years by the authors and others to identify the correct power required to grind ore in a SAG mill, by developing ore hardness variability functions for the ore body to be mined. This paper describes the next step in the SAG design process, which is choosing a SAG mill to accomplish the required specified design performance.At the test work stage, each ore hardness data point is a unique and discreet bit of information that represents the energy required to grind the ore represented by that sample at optimum SAG conditions. When the design criteria are set, it is now considered necessary that the required power draw in the mill chosen be provided at optimum conditions as well.Based on actual 3-ft diameter pilot plant results, we can now show that the grinding efficiency and throughput drop when the optimum load limit is exceeded. Future work is expected to show a similar reduction in efficiency when exceeding optimum speed. Providing specified power by exceeding these optimum conditions is not adequate and leads to a lower cost but underperforming SAG mill.It is possible in some cases to modify a SAG circuit to force it to perform better, but this often takes time, much effort and costly modifications. In most cases the capital spent on a properly sized SAG mill may prevent production losses that would be many times greater over the extended start up period. This is the direct result of choosing the proper SAG mill at the start.INTRODUCTIONThe sequential steps required for the design of any grinding circuit, have changed dramatically in the last seven years. Previously, it was considered necessary to do six foot diameter SAG mill pilot plant tests on representative samples of minus six inch ore (F80), in order to understand design requirements. It can now be shown that this method is costly and not likely to produce the desired result because it is difficult to recover six-inch material from deep within a new mine. The representative nature of the sample is often compromised when the sample is selected."

Part of a major sewer expansion for the City of Columbus, Ohio. The Big Walnut Outfall Augmentation Sewer?Part II (BWOAS) consists of 13,200 feet of tunnel of 12-foot tunnel passing mainly through glacial deposits with a water head of up to 2 bar. A Lovat RME167SE was used to drive this tunnel with steel fiber reinforced precast segmental liner used for support. This paper will discuss the concepts for tunnel sup-port and TBM selection, the problems encountered with the TBM sealing systems and the solutions used to repair the machine.

Chain Conveyor Cutter (CCC) is a chainsaw-type machine and originally developed for the construction of underground walls and/or ground improvements. CCC was developed from the accumulated technology of coal mining, combining the cutting technology of a shearer and the fuctions of chain conveyor. The CCC can cut harder soils and soft rocks, and vertically mixes the cut soils/rocks with cementing material selected through the discharging port installed at the bottom of the machine. In Indonesia, highwall mining trials have already been conducted in several coal mines. However, full-scale and regular operations have not been done yet due to the ground and machine control issues from their geological conditions. In order to overcome these problems, the application of CCC to highwall mining systems was proposed, and its applicability and technical issues to be solved were investigated in this research. This paper discribes the characteristics of CCC system and discusses the application of CCC to highwall mining systems.

In Copper smelter Aurubis Bulgaria, the copper in slag from the Flash furnace and the Converters is recovered by flotation. The scheme of slag processing is crushing, two stage grinding (autogenous and ball) and flotation. Till 2010 the grinding cycle in the plant was in two stages ? the first stage was AG Mill 70?23 working with a classifier and the second stage was ball mill 3.6/5.5 working with a hydrocyclone. In 2010 a new AG Mill 65x78 with hydrocyclone was put in operation in order to increase throughput of the plant. The second stage of the grinding cycle is with the same ball mill. The Old AG mill processed 55-60 t/h slag with particle size -0.071 mm 75% or over 75 t/h with particle size -0.071 mm 35-40 %. The new AG Mill was designed for throughput 105 t/h with particle size -0.071 mm over 70 %. After the start up there were some problems with the equipment ? block up of AG Mill?s grate and pumps for feeding of the hydrocyclone. For optimization of the process a lot of general tests were made. One of the main problem was a wearing of the sand nozzles. Different materials (rubber, ceramic, metallic) for the sand nozzles were tested. The openings of the grate were changed. This paper presents: ? the optimal technological parameters of the old and the new working scheme; ? how the technological parameters of the new working scheme change when the hydrocyclone works with different nozzles; ? the effect of the change of the grate openings; ? the problems with the increase of the circulating load; ? a final decisions for improvement of the grinding cycle work. The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) will induct its the 2014 National Mining Hall of Fame Class on Sept. 13, 2014 during its 27th Annual Induction Banquet and Ceremony at the Westin Hotel in Denver, CO. Representing the domestic and worldwide metal production, education, and health and safety sectors of the industry, this year?s four inductees cover a diverse cross-section of the mining industry. Harry M. Conger III, Günther Franz (Frank) Joklik, Ellen Swallow Richards and Dr. Alfred Weiss will join 223 other mining industry pioneers when they are formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame. They were selected for being visionaries, leaders and ambassadors, both within their own sectors and across the industry at large. Conger was a great role model and strong advocate within Homestake Mining Co. and among his industry peers on behalf of environmentally responsible, safe, profitable and high-performance operations. As chairman and chief executive officer, Conger was instrumental in revitalizing and rebuilding Homestake into an industry leader in technological advances and environmental protection. Through his contributions in exploration, project development and operations management as Kennecott president and chief executive, Joklik did much to strengthen Kennecott as a company and assisted in restoring the competitiveness of the U.S. mining industry. Richards is generally recognized as the founder of ecology. She was the very definition of a pioneer in such diverse fields as chemistry, geology and mineralogy, mining and metallurgy, environmental science, public health, home economics and education. Weiss was a true visionary in using quantitative methods and digital computers to aid mineral exploration, plan and design mines, operate mineral production facilities and integrate the disparate information resources throughout a mining company into a modern management information system. NMHF&M Board of Directors Chairman, Paul C. Jones, said, ?Again this year we are honored to be able to induct an outstanding group of deserving individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the mining industry in the United States. Included are two living inductees who have made significant contributions to management in the industry. One inductee was the first female graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, its first female faculty member and the first female member of AIME who had an outstanding career as a mineral investigator in the United States. Another inductee was a lifetime innovator in bringing digital technology into common use in our industry. Each of our 2014 inductees made significant and lasting contributions to our industry and are well deserving of becoming a member of the National Mining Hall of Fame.? The Northern Cape Province in South Africa has high levels of annual direct normal solar irradiance and reserves of zinc (Zn) ores. The question arises as to the benefits of integrating renewable solar energy into the beneficiation routes of these reserves. The paper evaluates a novel flowsheet for the production and beneficiation of Zn in this region, maximising localised solar energy as a source for both electricity and process heat. Solar variability is discussed and the cost and benefits of thermal storage in the flowsheets are evaluated by its influence on the levelised costs of electricity and process energy over the project life-time at a possible implementation site. The results of the developed scoping model showed that solar photovoltaic integration to provide electricity for electrowinning without battery storage can lead to more than 10% cost saving on electricity over the lifetime of the project. Additional savings potential was identified when battery storage was included to enable the solar PV system to supply electricity during peak tariff periods. The solar thermal case showed the most promise with savings of 70% on heating costs for casting, while solar PV electricity without storage resulted in a 16% cost saving on heating for casting over the lifetime of the project. Solar PV electricity generation resulted in the avoidance of more than 20% of CO2 emissions from grid electricity use. Solar thermal heating can avoid up to 80% of the CO2 emissions associated with grid electricity use for remelting of Zn cathodes for casting. The Cadia mine has shifted from an open pit operation to the Cadia East underground panel cave. The resulting increase in milled tonnes, more competent ore and the decrease in fines production through shifting to panel caving were predicted to require an increase of over 25 per cent in installed power. This expansion was accomplished via the installation of secondary and high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) crushing of the ore, with the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill receiving a combination of primary, secondary and HPGR crushed feed. This design, criteria and rationale for selection was presented at the SAG Conference 2011. Timber has been used as pile support for structures for 6,000 years. Some means of preservation of wood go back almost that far. Timber piles support all types of structures ? some are buried below the water table; others raise a home for protection from animals or a chief&apos;s home for prestige. Millions of wood piles have been driven for bridge support. Earlier piles were driven by hand then by ingeniously raised weights. Charring, animal fats and oils have been used for preservation. Coal tar creosote and other preservative methods started only in the early 1800&apos;s and give effective protection.

Recently a detailed study ?Minerals Planning Policies and Supply Practices in Europe? has been completed. The study, conducted on behalf of DG Enterprise, demonstrated that there are very few written down national minerals policies within European Union. Mineral policy elements are dispersed in many different documents and acts. The paper discusses the essential elements of minerals policies; particularly importance is placed in issues related to planning (land use planning, mineral development, etc.). A number of examples of successful and less successful mineral planning policy approaches are presented in other to support the idea of importance of comprehensive mineral policy. The main sources of information were the country reports of 26 European countries that are appendix of the study. We conclude that comprehensive written mineral policy that incorporates essential elements is crucial in order to achieve secure minerals supply.
