Leaching column techniques and microbiological methods have been described in detail in Madgwick and Ralph (1980) and Madgwick, Ralph and Sadler (1981).Sixty-nine kilograms of copper porphyry ore (0.4 per cent Cu, 2.7 per cent Fe) (particle size 2.4-11.2 mm; 60 The effect of sodium chloride (O.6M) irrigation on bacterial leaching of Bougainville copper porphyry ore was studied.Viability of suspended Thiobacillus ferrooxidants was reduced to less than 10 cells/ml in NaCI (O.6M) compared with 10' eells/ml in dilute II,SO, (0.01 M, pll 2). Salt irrigation had no significant effect on heterotrophic and sulphur oxidizing bacteria. Increascd short term recovery of copper (145 g/tonne/ 15 days) was followed by a marked decrease in tenors to less than 20 mg/litre/day compared with an acid leach, steady release, of 110 mg/litre/day. Resumption of acid leaching restored average solution copper to 46 mg/litre/day and the viability of suspended T Ierrooxidates to 10 cells/ml.Quantitative removal of sodium ehloride from ore particles was difficult and t races of NaCI remained for more than 200 days.

"Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy has been employed to· examine the role of tetraperoxochromate( V) ions (Cro:-) and other Cr(V) species in the generation of hydroxyl (OH) radicals in the reaction of Cr(VI) with H2O 2 in biological media. In contrast to earlier suggestions, the present ESR studies using crystalline K3CrO8 as a source of Cro:- show that decomposition of Cro:- in water or in H2O 2 does not generate significant amounts of OH radicals. Addition of NADH to a solution containing Cro:- yields a Cr(V)-NADH complex, which readily reacts with H2O 2 to generate OH radicals. Similar results obtained from several other biological reductants, including vitamin B2 , indicate that a vacant coordination site on a Cr(V) complex facilitates its reaction with H2O 2 to generate ""OH radicals. We thus suggest that in biological media, reaction [3] instead of [1] or [2] is the major pathway for the OH radical generation: While the carcinogenic potential of Cr(Vl)-based compounds has been well established via epidemiologic and animal studies (1), the underlying biochemical mechanism is still not well understood (2). In a recent development, however, Kawanishi et al. (3) have reported that hydroxyl (OH)2 radicals might be the key species in the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity. As to the mechanism of the ""OH radical formation they suggest that Cr(VI) reacts with cellular hydrogen peroxide (H2O 2) to form the tetraperoxochromate(V) (Crog-) ions, which decompose to produce hydroxyl radicals. It was also suggested (3) that the ""OH radicals thus produced cause genotoxicity via DNA base modification and deoxyribose phosphate backbone alterations. More recently Aiyar et al. (4) reported the detection of OH radicals in the reaction of Cr(VI) with H2O 2 in biological media, including the reaction of ""OH radicals with deoxyguanosine to generate 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine adducts, confirming that ""OH radicals could indeed play a significant role in the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity. However, the mechanism for the ""OH generation was not clarified, although the role of Crog- ions as possible precursors was mentioned, somewhat along the lines suggested by Kawanishi et al. (3). The possibility of the participation of Crog- in the ""OH generation has also been indicated by Sugiyama et al. (5), since they mention that vitamin B2 enhances the formation of""OH radicals in the reaction of Cr(VI) with H2O 2 because of the generation of Crog- in the reaction."

During recent years there has been a marked increase in the use of explosives in Queensland coal mines. Delay detonators have been introduced and their use has extended with the wider application of mechanised methods of mining.The need for careful study of the characteristics of delay detonators is stressed so that the advantages of simultaneous firing, from the points of view of safety and efficiency, may be obtained. With their use new potential hazards are introduced. These hazardsare considered and means whereby the overall safety may be improved are discussed.The increase in the number of misfires since the introduction of delay detonators is shown and the examination of misfired detonators is described. Lessons to be learned! from these misfires are noted and details are given of the essential requirements for safe and efficient blasting using delay detonators.INTRonUCTIONOne of the aims of mechanization in coal mines is to reduce the physical effort applied to the winning of coal. Explosives play an important part in achieving this and, following the introduction of power borers for the drilling of shot-holes in Queensland coal mines, much of the arduous work associated with coal getting has been eased. During recent years there has been a marked increase in the consumption of explosives, as shown in Table 1, and it must be the aim of all to use these explosives safely and efficiently. Roasting of refractory gold ores has been a commercial process for many years. Improvements in design of fluidised bed roasting technologies and low capital and operating costs compared with other refractory treatment processes can potentially make roasting a viable option.However, gold extraction from roasted ores carried out on laboratory scale equipment often invariably yields lower recoveries than other processes such as bio-oxidation or pressure oxidation. Non-optimal laboratory roasting conditions can incorrectly write roasting off as a process option.Low gold recoveries from the cyanidation of calcine products from roasting can often be attributed to roasting conditions not favouring gold liberation and agglomeration processes, particularly if lockups of elements such as arsenic are being pursued for environmental reasons.This paper reviews the conditions favoured for gold agglomeration and accessibility of gold to cyanide, test conditions to achieve gold liberation and agglomeration on laboratory scale and designs that incorporate staged decomposition and roasting to make roasting a more commercial option.CITATION:Aylmore, M G and de Klerk, L W, 2013. The Egnatia Odos (Odos meaning road) is one of Greece’s largest ever highway construction projects and one of Europe’s most important. The Highway will assist in the connection of the Greek Ionian/Adriatic Coast with Turkey and the Black Sea reviving an historic Roman alignment “Via Egnatia” connecting Rome to Constantinople (now Istanbul). There are 74 twin tunnels (60 bored and 14 cut-and-cover) with lengths ranging from 160 m (175 yd) to 4,600 m (5,031 yd) and 100 m (109 yd) to 270 m (295 yd),respectively. The complex geology and resulting physical geography have had a major influence on both the design and construction of these tunnels. This paper describes the management, design and construction challenges of these numerous tunnels.

Since its discovery, Cuba has been called the “Pearl of the Antilles.” The country remains that, albeit a little tarnished these days. In Havana, many of the buildings are being refurbished, while some new ones are under construction. Since 1991, the laws have been relaxed so that Cuba is developing a mixed economy of central control with free market. Joint venture agreements have been signed with businesses from many countries. This does not include the United States due to its embargo. But even these regulations have been relaxed some.

Taking the third meridian as the eastern boundary of proved payable auriferous country, there is a stretch of country, nearly 600 miles in width, in which no appreciable amount of gold has yet been discovered. Many prospectors have attempted to .penetrate or traverse it, but comparatively few have thought it worth while proceeding with the examination.The desolate stretch of waterless desert-the very few and insignificant outcrops through the sand and the almost total absence of feed for horses have, combined, presented such a barrier as to preclude prospecting. The few who have traversed the country are eloquent in denunciation, yet their investigations, necessarily hurried, are not quite satisfactory. The absence of water utterly debars a thorough examination being made. Gold may exist in quantity, yet it would have to be extraordinarily plentiful to render its obtaining profitable. Too fantastic is the idea of its ever being a mining district; shifting sand to traverse, utter absence of wood and water render the notion absurd. Likely looking belts occur, but these in all "cases are small and remote from water. Gold has been obtained from likely look ing quartz reefs, but only by fire assay, and then but a few do to the ton. Without wishing to be pessimistic, I would unhesitatingly declare that east of the third meridian, and between the parallels 25 and 30 degrees in West Australia, there is no gold in payable quantities.

During the late 1940's and early 1950?s, the Westinghouse Combustion Turbine Division built and demonstrated a residual oil-burning locomotive on six eastern railroads. Plans were made to convert to burning pulverized coal, and a single combustor was operated at a full-pressure condition in the laboratory for about two years. During the mid-1960's to mid-1970's, there was considerable interest in coal-burning MHD and a combustor was developed which would also be applicable to combustion turbines. In the early 19801s, the BCR National Laboratory (BCRNL) became affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh, and a program was begun, supported by the Stare of Pennsylvania, to develop an all-purpose combustor for use with industrial and utility boilers and eventually with combustion turbines. In this paper, we review the work of almost 40 years, indicate our present position, and propose steps to be taken leading to efficient and environmentally acceptable power generation from coal, and specifically to coal-burning locomotives.

The objective of this research is to find the extent of the range of applicability of previously developed statistical methods for determining grade and tonnage of ore to bedded uranium deposits. Uranium assays obtained from gamma-ray logs of exploratory drill holes are used to compute grade and tonnage of ore in the deposit by a standard polygonal method and by statistical analysis. The results obtained by the two methods are compared. The uranium-assay frequency distributions are shown to be lognormal and a simple transformation permits the use of standard normal curve statistics. The effects on the assay frequency distributions of stratified sampling, a required minimum mining thickness, and increased assay-interval length are investigated. The addition of low-grade mineralization to make up the required minimum mining thickness results in a distinct change in the skewness of the assay frequency distribution. Any statistical inference regarding grade-tonnage relationships that will be produced, using the minimum mining thickness, should be made on the basis of this "revised" assay frequency distribution.

"Construction of the University at Buffalo’s new School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (UB-SMBS) required excavation in variable ground to a depth of more than 40 ft adjacent to the NFTA Metro subway and Allen Street Station. Complicating the building design and construction, the new medical facility incorporates the at grade Station entrance building, requiring a combination of temporary and permanent excavation support structures, a complex sequence of ground support installation, and a mix of shallow and deep foundations to accommodate the large floor spans and concentrated column loads introduced by building over and adjacent to the Station entrance. Excavation and foundation construction was challenged by a stratified soil profile with interlayered and sensitive sands, silts and clays and complicated groundwater regime with perched and regional water tables. Efficient construction required ongoing coordination between the design team and contractor, careful field observation, and construction monitoring in several facets of below grade construction. This paper describes the design and construction of excavation support structures and foundations to manage the variable ground, congested site conditions, and complications of building adjacent and above an active subway station. Use of site instrumentation and monitoring data to provide guidance in construction when unanticipated field conditions arise is illustrated. Lessons learned in installation and sequencing of excavation support, groundwater control and foundation construction are also discussed.INTRODUCTIONUniversity at Buffalo President Satish K. Tripathi heralded the new School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (UB-SMBS) as a future linchpin of UB’s downtown campus that will revitalize the area and enhance western New York’s emerging bio-sciences corridor. The $375 Million, 628,000 square foot, eight story building with two basements is expected to house 2,000 faculty, student and staff allowing UB to increase class size from 140 to 180 students. It will be constructed above the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority’s (NFTA) Allen Street Station, creating a direct connection to Buffalo’s light rail system. The 200 ft x 400 ft site is bounded by Main Street, High Street, Washington Street and the Roosevelt Apartments and adjoining parking lot at the west, north, east and south respectively, as shown in Figure 2. Groundbreaking for the new building was in October 2013 with the facility scheduled to open in early 2017."

Crocidolite deposits in the Hamersley Ranges, NW. of Western Australia, occur over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20' to 30 miles. Their stratigraphic environment and mineralogy is comparable to that of similar deposits of the Cape Belt, South Africa. It is probable that the known exposures' represent only a small portion of the total extent.Current production is wholly by Australian Blue Asbestos Pty. Ltd. at Wittenoom Gorge and has been in the order of 1,2,000 to 14,000 long t.p.a over the past six years.INTRODUCTIONThe Hamersley Ranges are located in the NW. Division of Western Australia and extend, approximately, from latitudes 21° 30' to 23°S and longitudes 117° to 1200 E. Their mean height above sea level is 2,000 ft, and they rise from 600 to 800 ft above the general level of the tableland which extends SE. from the coastal town of Roebourne.Mt. Bruce, the highest peak, is 4,024 ft above sea level. The ranges are intersected by numerous north-flowing streams, which are dry during the greater part of the year. These streams have carved deep gorges, and it is in these that the principal deposits of crocidolite outcrop.The presence of the mineral was first recorded in 1917, but the deposits remained untouched until 1937 when strong market demand for crocidolite resulted in considerable prospecting and mining activity, particularly in Yampire, Wittenoom and Dale's Gorges. It was established also that the blue asbestos belt extended from Willi Wolli Springs NW. to Millstream station, Le., over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20 to 30 miles. "The Éléonore mine, located in the James Bay region of Northern Quebec, generates a gold bearing flotation concentrate rich in pyrrhotite. Direct leaching of the finely ground concentrate results in high cyanide consumptions and poor recoveries, so effective pre-treatment to passivate the pyrrhotite is required before leaching. Following a number of process upsets at the mine, test work was performed to better understand the requirements for passivation so a more effective operational strategy could be implemented. This paper outlines the testing and implementation of the new strategy at Éléonore.ÉLÉONORE CONCENTRATOR The Éléonore mine is located 800 km north of Montreal, in the James Bay Region of Quebec, Canada. The ore, containing gold disseminated in sulfide minerals and free fine gold in silicate gangue, is crushed in a two-stage crusher plant before being ground in a single 9,000 kW ball mill. The ball mill is in closed circuit, with about 25% of the cyclone underflow passing through a gravity plant with two, 48” Knelson concentrators. Gold recovery in the gravity circuit varies between 15 and 20%, with gravity concentrate leached daily in an Acacia intensive leach reactor. Cyclone overflow, at a target P80 of 65 microns, flows to the flotation plant where the gold bearing sulfide minerals, mainly pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite, are recovered to concentrate with a mass pull of about 5%. The flotation concentrate, typically containing between 80 and 120 g/t of gold, is thickened and finely ground using a 1500 kW Isa Mill. The finely ground concentrate is diluted, to generate a slurry with about 32% solids by weight, before feeding the leach plant. Initially the concentrate slurry is pre-treated with oxygen and lead nitrate, to passivate the sulphide minerals before cyanide is added for gold dissolution. Gold is recovered from the leached slurry using carbon-in-pulp (CIP). The flotation tailings are also thickened and gold is recovered in a dedicated leach-CIP plant."

"Sandfire’s DeGrussa Copper-Gold operation in West Australia is a new high grade copper sulfide mine, which includes a 1.5 Mtpa concentrator which was completed in 2013.Early after commissioning, it was identified that the flotation capacity in the all-mechanical cleaner circuit was not sufficient. In order to improve recovery, the tail from the cleaner scavenger was sent back to feed the rougher scavengers. Test-work was done on-site to evaluate the possibility of using a flotation column as a pre-cleaner. A CavTube™ sparging system was selected, which is especially effective for fine ore particle flotation. Test-work was conducted at site using a 150 mm diameter unit, and then confirmed on a 500 mm diameter unit. A 4250 mm diameter full scale unit was installed in Q4 2014 and commissioned in Q1 2015. This unit gave some significant advantages including a reduction in re-grinding requirements, elimination of a circulating load and increase in the recovery of copper in the cleaner circuit and overall circuit.In this presentation, the benefits of columns and cavitation sparging for floating fine particles and rejecting fine entrained gangue will be explained. Also, the results from a lab unit and a pilot unit will be compared against the results of the full-scale unit. The paper will demonstrate the scalability of flotation columns, and which phenomena and scale-up criteria must be considered to be successful. Finally, some general observations will be made about the importance of columns in copper cleaning circuits.IntroductionSandfire Resources’ DeGrussa copper-gold concentrator is located approximately 900 km north-north-east of Perth in Western Australia. "Abstract-Exploration in most areas of Canada has to contend with problems posed by glacial overburden. In many areas exploration for gold has been based on the sampling of tills, frequently by deep overburden drilling, and analyses of heavy mineral concentrates. Notwithstanding the significant role that till geochemistry has played in the discovery of some important gold deposits over the last few years, increased appreciation of the nature of the glacial history and stratigraphy and the character of gold within till has led to the recognition of a number of ways whereby the effectiveness of exploration can be improved upon.In order for till geochemistry to be useful in exploration, a number of conditions must be fulfilled, including:1. mineralization, or alteration halo related to mineralization, subcropping at the bedrock /over­ burden interface; 2.glacial erosion and dispersal of a recognizable signature of mineralization into the glacialsediments; 3, preservation of glacial sediments containing this geochemical component (trace metal or mineral) at positions subsequently selected for sampling (normally drill sites); 4. correct identification of specific till units and associated ice movement history; 5. collection of adequately large and representative samples; 6. appropriate sample preparation and processing; 7, appropriate geochemical analyses; and 8. correct data processing and interpretation.While we have no control over the first two geological conditions, and only limited controlover till availability, we can control the quality and thoroughness of sampling, sample identification, sample preparation, analysis and interpretation. In particular attention needs to be focussed on obtaining a large enough sample to be adequately representative, an unbiased sample must be collected, together with appropriate sample processing, analysis, data processing and interpretation. It is considered that by modifying or extending existing approaches to gold exploration the chances of exploration success can be increased. In particular, analyses of both the heavy mineral and minus 63 ?m fractions of till is recommended because gold in till may occur in different size fractions."

Under compuision of the present urgency to implement the President's promise to make the United States the arsenal for the democracies there is a tendency to demand a relaxation of restrictions on hours of labor and to speed up all industrial processes. The pressure is the more insistent with growing realization of the importance of the time factor in the success- ful prosecution of the war effort and the lack of skilled workers due to (2) operation of the draft, lack of an apprentice system in industry, and loss of skill by workers unemployed for long periods during the depression. With "total" war such as it is today the probabilities are that everyone will be required to exert greater effort (in many instances in activities to which they are unaccustomed) for longer periods than ever before has been necessary. The question arises, "What will be the aftereffects as well as the immediate effects on health, safety, and efficiency?" A review of the literature leaves the impression that this question has not been an- swered completely, especially as regards the ultimate effects. Mechanization, speeding up of industrial processes, mass produc- tion, and the small industrial concerns present many problems to indus- trial medicine. Does the tendency to expect the worker to produce at full speed all the time he is on the job decrease the effectiveness of the shorter working hours and cause undue fatigue, loss of efficiency, and increased accident proneness? The answer is important as this condition is likely to be intensified by the exigencies of the present emergency. According to Viteles (1)3, The increased tension under such conditions of work appears to offset the savings in muscular force made pos- sible by the machine. The tension, the speed, the subject- tion to specialization of work and a rhythm uncontrolled by the individual promote fatigue, characterized by a "decrease in the power to work, a decrease in pleasure taken in work, and a decrease in the enjoyment of the hours spent away from work."' The crowding of workers in temporary structures without proper provision for comfort and health may add greatly to the general fatigue factors already present in many industrial establishments. In 1932 Lockhart (2) stated that the production and maintenance of a healthy, satisfied industrial population is the most urgent necessity, involving problems so serious as to constitute a national task too great economically to be relegated to industrial concerns. If this was true in 1932, it must be doubly so today.

A way back in 1851-2 an army of diggers had commenced the conquest, of the now famous goldfields of Australasia. At that time, and in the Colony of Victoria, more that 10,000 were camped on and around the slopes of the silurian ridges over which Ballarat East h'as been built. A wonderfully rich golden harvest was soon gathered from the alluvial found high on these slopes, and from runs (or gutters) which got their rise on them, and were traced down gullies into a broad valley. In due course it was ascertained that the valley carried a main gutter which represented the unity of the higher ones, and further explorations proved this gutter to have a westerly and then a southerly trend toward and under a basaltic plateau, on the top ofwhich Ballarat West and Sebastopol now stand. In the records of alluvial gold mining all the world over the Ballarat field can be classed amongst the richest. Gold in pieces the size of beans, in, stringy filigree bits, in dust and in solid lumps (the largest of which weighed more than 2,200 ozs.), was obtained in the comparatively shallow ground on the slopes; and speaking generally, great and uniform richness was met with along a belt of country on which, in a north and south line, the present quartz mines of Ballarat East are at work. It was noticed by the diggers that when the gutters crossed the upturned edges of the ,strata, the gold deposits in them were patchy, and that when they trended north and south on this beltthey carried rich deposits for longer distances. In time it was also noticf!d that a class of stringy, irregular shaped quartz occurrences, in a bottom of soft slates, in the, immediate vicinity of tpe g)ltter, meant greater richness, and (in the aIluvial) on the higher ground slabs of quartz would now and then be met with, in which strings and spongy masses of gold were found. As the shallow alluvial became worked out the diggers turned their attention to the quartz occurrences, and, now and again the striking of a flat make of a very golden nature would cause quite a stir in the local mining world.

A laboratory technique for simulating in-situ uranium mining was developed and used to determine the effects of leaching variables on permeability, uranium recovery, leach solution interaction with the ore-aquifer environment, and post-leach chemical leakage. In particular, ammonium bicarbonate, the commonly-used leach solution, was examined in great detail. Agitation leach tests were conducted to examine the effect on ammonium sorption and desorption of clay content, solution and clay ammonium levels, pH, and the type and concentration of other anions and cations in solution. Initial column tests were performed to determine the degree of ore-aquifer interaction that could be expected for various leach solutions; sulfuric acid, and ammonium, sodium, and potassium bi-carbonates. Subsequent tests examined various methods to restore the ores by lowering the post-leach chemical leakage. The restoration tests examined the use of reducing agents (e.g., ammonium bisulfite, sodium bisulfite; and sodium sulfite), ore blocking and stabilizing agents (e.g., sodium silicate, aluminum chloride, and magnesium-calcium salt).and ammonium displacement agents (e.g., aluminum chloride and lanthanum chloride-sulfate)

Coal bursts are one of the least understood yet the most critical hazards in underground coal mines. The ground motions induced by seismic events can trigger unstable failure of coal and rock mass and degrade the surroundings of an excavation. Therefore, the characteristics of ground motions should be fully investigated for an improved burst risk management. This paper analyzes ground motion features of a longwall panel from a typical underground burst-prone coal mine in China. The results showed that most of the ground motions on roadways were hardly initiate coal bursts due to insignificant energy input to the damage. The intensity of ground motions in near-field zone were nearly 20 times higher than those in far-field zone. The strongest vibration on roadway was induced by a coal burst with energy of 28,600 kJ, which can cause ground motion of 0.77 m/s and equivalent dynamic stress of 14.69 MPa. The findings of this paper can improve the assessment of seismic risks and its management.

This report summarizes part of the work performed under the USBM Contract No. H0155113, "Noise Abatement of Continuous Mining Machines." It reviews, briefly, the aboveground tests performed on a Jeffrey 120M conveyor that were documented in Vol. I of the subject contract; and describes the performance of treatments implemented on underground equipment. The noise level at the operator's position in the aboveground-test facility was reduced from 101.5 to 91 dBA using treatments with satisfactory - aboveground - durability. Extensive underground evaluation has been performed only on the constrained layer damping, which has reduced the conveyor noise by 2 to 6 dBA depending on the operating conditions, and has been shown to be sufficiently durable. Other promising candidates for exploratory evaluation include resilient layers for the top/bottom decks, and smoother discontinuities between adjacent conveyor sections.

Remote control is usually associated with deep mine, continuous mining machines. This is because thin-seam operation precludes an onboard operator's compartment or the mine has approval to conduct extended cut mining. Using a tethered or radio-linked control box, the remote operator is typically situated 3 to 15 m (10 to 50 ft) from the working face. The operator receives direct operational cues through senses like vision, hearing and feel. Remote control is sometimes touted as a safety feature. However, this is not always true, as operators are not provided protection from roof and rib falls or being crushed between the machine and a rib. Remote control operators are also left exposed to dust and noise. Teleoperation described here is the computer-based, distant control of mining machinery from a protected operator compartment located out of the line-of-sight from the operational site. Video, sound and other sensory information are gathered through sensors and electronically transmitted to and displayed at the operator's location. The teleoperator responds to the information and makes decisions that are initiated by control devices (usually switches). These control commands are then electronically transmitted to the re¬mote machinery and the appropriate machine function(s) are carried out. Teleoperation increases the safety of mining machine operators as it removes them from the immediate vicinity of hazards. The US Bureau of Mines' involvement with teleoperation dates back to 1979. Following feasibility studies, a highwall milling system (HMS) was developed and tested. A deep, thin-seam, room-and-pillar system (TSRPS) has been designed and is currently being surface tested.
