"BHP-Billiton’s Minera Escondida Limitada, in Chile, is one of the world’s largest copper producers. It treats a combined 10,500 tph of copper ore through its two concentrators: Los Colorados and Laguna Seca. The performance of the rougher circuit at each concentrator was measured and analysed using the JKTech flotation optimisation methodology. This involved developing a flotation model for each concentrator based on cell operating parameters (for example bubble surface area flux and froth recovery) and feed ore floatability characteristics. The rougher circuit performance was evaluated in terms of traditional measures, such as grade and recovery. The operation was also analysed using the measured cell operating parameters and ore floatability and the effect of these with regard to performance (grade / recovery) was assessed.This paper presents a comparison of the rougher circuit at each concentrator in terms of these parameters. The main differences in rougher circuit performance between the two plants were attributed to differences in feed ore floatability characteristics and froth recovery. The comparison highlighted opportunities where performance improvements could be made. The study also showed the usefulness of separating the flotation process into easily measurable subprocesses to further identify the different mechanisms occurring in each rougher circuit. Traditional measures like grade and recovery are useful for monitoring flotation operation but this data lacks the depth to determine the root cause behind operational issues. Determining the operating parameters and ore floatability provides the operating plant metallurgist better tools to assess and manage these issues."

Introduction Coal has always been China's predominant energy resource. The country ranks among the three richest countries in coal reserves in the world, next to the US and the Soviet Union. According to China's Ministry of Coal Industry (MCI), coal accounted for about 72% of the total national energy consumption. Despite efforts to increase the output of oil and hydropower, coal is predicted to remain dominant on the energy scene by increasing its share to 77% by the turn of the century. To match the rapid growth in the agricultural and industrial sectors, MCI has targeted the coal industry to double coal output from 600 Mt/a (660 million stpy) in 1981 to 1.2 Gt/a (1.3 billion stpy) by the year 2000. How is this goal to be achieved? According to MCI, it will be accomplished by: • building new underground and surface mines with a total output of 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy); • increasing the output of existing state-controlled mines from the present 344 Mt/a (368 million stpy) to 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy); and • developing and increasing the output of small, local mines run by province, county, and production brigade from the present 276 Mt/a (304 million stpy) to 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy). Building new underground and surface mines New underground coal mines will be developed in areas where the coal industry has already made headway and infrastructures currently exist. This is to optimize hardpressed capital spending on investment. Ten existing coal production bases were selected in nine different provinces that met these requirements. The underground mines scheduled to be constructed in stages at he existing coal production bases will have a total output of 200 Mt/a (220 million stpy) by the end of the century. Regarding surface mines, four mines in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and one in Shanxi province have been earmarked for construction during the same period. By the year 2000, these surface mines are expected to produce 200 Mt/a (220 million stpy). Foreign equipment, machinery, and surface mine stripping technology were all involved in different degrees in the development of the five new surface mines. Some have signed joint venture agreements. Occidental Petroleum Corp. is in a joint venture with China in developing Ping-shou's 15 Mt/a (16.5 million stpy) Antaibao No. 1 open-pit. The Shentou power station, situated nearby, is anticipated to consume 3.2 Mt/a (3.5 million stpy) of the coal it produces. Some is designated for export. Increasing output There are 554 state-controlled mines that have been in operation since before 1980. They produce 344 Mt/a (379 million stpy). To increase capacity, MCI has laid out some guidelines. • Coal prospecting near existing mines must be given top priority and intensified so that workable reserves can be increased. This would lengthen the mines' useful life. • Many mines and slopes that were constructed during the 1950s are very small and densely populated. Keywords: Ilmenite, titania slag, pig iron, rutile, zircon Located on the eastern shores of South Africa, 180 km north of Durban, Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) produces approximately 2.0 million metric tonnes of product annually making RBM a leading producer of titania slag, high purity pig iron, rutile and zircon. Heavy minerals are extracted from the nearby dunes by dredging and concentration on a floating gravity separation plant, followed by separation of the ilmenite, rutile and zircon at the mineral separation plant located at the smelter site. The ilmenite is processed through an oxidizing roast followed by magnetic separation and is then partially reduced to an 85 per cent TiO2 slag in one of four six-in-line a.c. electric arc furnaces. The slag is milled and then classified into two product sizes suitable as a raw material for both the sulphate and chloride pigment processes. The high quality iron produced during the reduction process is further processed to produce various grades of low-manganese iron. Around 95 per cent of the products are exported, yielding a world market share of about 25 per cent of titania slag, rutile, high quality pig iron, and zircon.

Current climate change projections suggest both an increase in the intensity of significant rainfall events and an increase in the variability of rainfall in some regions of Australia. It is necessary for mine site owners and operators to understand the effects that this potential shift in climate may have on their operations. The ability to maintain compliance with discharge regulations and operational security for those sites that rely on surface water run-off harvesting may be negatively impacted if some current climate change projections are realised. Although current regulations require the preparation of water management plans, these are generally developed using historical climate records for the site in question and as such do not give any indication of a siteÆs resilience to the influences of climate change.This study compares design and operational considerations for a case study mine site using historical rainfall records and modified records representing climate change projections. The future climate models are invariably broad scale and are limited in their capacity to be downscaled to a reasonable resolution for developing a site water balance. Instead the local historical data set has been modified to concentrate precipitation to peak periods and propagated through the model. The study looks at the siteÆs response to the potential changes in climate.It is shown that if current climate change projections are realised, this will have a significant effect on both the necessary size of designed surface water infrastructure and operational considerations on-site. A discussion is presented on the potential risks that climate change presents to mine sites and the range of options that could be considered to mitigate these risks. Depending on a number of factors, including location and risk profile of the owner/operator, resilience to climate change can be addressed as either a capital or operational expenditure (CAPEX/OPEX).CITATION:Craven, A, Hawker, S and Gibbs, M, 2013. In many mineral processing operations, the reported production figures for an accounting period may not make the best use of available data. While most of the mathematical approaches, such as check-in/check-out, mass balancing, used in effective metallurgical accounting strategies are well understood, the sources and magnitude of measurement errors generally are not. As part of the æAMIRA P754-Metal Accounting and ReconciliationÆ project, a study was undertaken at the Northparkes copper/gold concentrator near Parkes, New South Wales to examine the data used in their concentrator metallurgical accounting system. This paper summarises the results of a detailed examination of the mass measurement systems around the concentrator as well as the primary sampling system used for grade estimation. The goal of this work was to develop practical techniques to quantify the error (ie both accuracy and precision) of the measured metal accounting information. With this information, statistical confidence levels for this data can then be calculated. If the errors are small, the effect of error in each piece of measured data can then be propagated to other calculated production figures such as recovery and feed grade using a statistical technique called æthe propagation of errorÆ.

Since great emphasis is being placed on the manufacturing science and processing science programs in the Department of Defence and other government research agencies and industries; currently, extensive research on computer aided design(CAD)/ computer aided manufacturing (CAM)/ and computer aided engineering (CAE) is being conducted at Ohio University (OU) . OU has invested over a million dollars in CAD/CAM hardware and software. Design and analysis packages like ALPID, NIKE, STREAM, SHEAR, POLY_FLON, RINGROLL have been developed or modified at OUusing finite element method, finite difference techniques or enhanced slab analysis. Packages like ABAQUS, FLUENT, and NASTRAN have been extensively used.

Two key elements in the design of a pastefill or high density hackfill system are the preparation of the backfill material and its distribution underground. This paper examines these two areas. Owing to the essentially impervious nature of total mill tailings, preparation of pastefill and high density fill from current tailings involves a physical dewatering process. There are currently three methods available for this process: I. Vacuum or pressure filters. These represent the 'traditional' approach to the preparation of pastefill. 2. Paste production storage mechanism. This is a thickening/storage mechanism developed with the specific objective of producing paste/high density backfills. 3. Fluidization. This system utilises silos fitted with simple dewatering devices and nozzles. Recently developed by CANMET, it provides the simplest and most economical approach. This paper describes and compares the three preparation methods, from a practical and an economic point of view. Once the pastefill/high density fill has been prepared and binder added, the backfill must be distributed underground into the stopes. A fundamental factor in the design of a distribution system is the rheology of the material- No two materials will exhibit the same properties, and a sequence of rheological and related testing is required prior to the completion of the design of the underground distribution system. This paper covers the testwork normally required and discusses the fundamental design parameters of pastefill distribution systems. The final section of this paper summarises the use of pastefill at three mincsin Canada.

Partners In Economic Reform, Inc., established a Polish-American Mine Center in Katowice, Poland, in 1996 to improve working conditions in the minerals industry. The program was based on the experience of mining companies, government, and labor in the United States, and was executed by a Coordinating Committee headed by the Center Director and Polish leaders from industry, State, labor, and academia. The cooperation among all parties has enabled safety and health issues to become part of industry restructuring with impressive initial reductions in coal mine fatalities. Existing work practices and attitudes of labor and management were assessed in coal mines throughout the country. Promotion, Rules, and Job and Task Analysis were identified as the areas requiring the most improvement, and are part of a post-graduate Safety Management program. Demonstration projects included measuring dust levels, using safety glasses, and promoting hazard awareness. Improved labor-management relations increased cooperation allowing for effective transfer of technology. Results can also be applied to improve the working environment of the manufacturing sector also undergoing restructuring.

This report presents experimental data on crater formation in four rock types. From an analysis of these data a general theory of rock breakage by explosives is deduced. This theory accounts for most of the rock breakage and other phenomena that occur when a concentrated charge is detonated in a drill hole near a free surface. From instrumented crater tests and high-speed motion pictures of the explosions, various experimental checks on the deduced theory of rock breakage are made. The general mechanism of rock breakage by explosives as described in this report is outlined briefly below. The detonation of the explosive charge creates a high gas pressure in the charge hole, which in turn generates a compressive strain pulse in the surrounding rock. This compressive strain pulse travels outward in all directions from the charge hole. Near the charge hole the amplitude of this strain pulse is sufficient to cause crushing of the rock. However, as the strain pulse travels outward its amplitude decays rapidly until no further crushing of the rock is possible. The compressive strain pulse continues to travel outward until it is reflected by a free surface. Upon reflection the compressive strain pulse becomes a tensile strain pulse. As the strength of rock in tension is much less than in compression, the reflected tensile strain pulse is able to break the rock in tension, progressing from the free surface back toward the shot point. In other words, the rock is pulled apart, not pushed apart.

Jackleg drill operators are exposed to harmful levels of hand-arm vibration (HAV). Anti-vibration handles and gloves provide modest reductions in HAV exposures and forearm muscle exertion from the use of anti-vibration handles and gloves by jackleg drill operators. The goal of this pilot study was to investigate changes in HAV with the use of anti-vibration gloves and handles compared to forearm muscle exertion experienced by operators and measured with surface electromyography (EMG). Five subjects operated the drill under four different cases: no anti-vibration controls, anti-vibration gloves only, anti-vibration handle only, and simultaneous anti-vibration handle and glove use. Muscle exertion was expressed as a percent of maximum voluntary contraction (%MVC) and was compared using Welch’s ANOVA with Games-Howell post hoc comparisons. The case with both anti-vibration controls in use simultaneously (largest grip diameter) was associated with a mean %MVC of 36.13% during operation for all forearm muscles combined, which was significantly higher than that of the other cases (p < 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in mean HAV exposures. The anti-vibration handle with anti-vibration glove case only increased the maximum allowable exposure time by 8 min as compared to the control case without any anti-vibration controls. These results suggest that the modest HAV exposure reductions from the use of anti-vibration handles and gloves may pale in comparison to the increased muscle exertion resulting from their use, and this trade-off among jackleg drill operators is a potential concern that warrants further investigation.

"COREM has developed, specifically for the mineral industry, a mobile laboratory using the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) technique. It has been used to perform onstream analysis (OSA) of the chemical composition of slurries in both gold-ore and iron-ore processing plants. Industrial tests have been carried out respectively at La Mine Doyon (Cambior), a gold-ore processing plant near Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, and at QCM's iron-ore pelletizing plant in Port-Cartier, Quebec. The aim was to demonstrate that the LIBS technique is capable of providing information that meets the needs for process control. C, Si, Ca, Mg, Mn and Al were the elements targeted on iron ore while Cu, Fe, Ag and Au were targeted for gold ore. The results obtained meet or exceed the requirements for process control and consequently clearly show that the LIBS technique is suitable for industrial applications.The feasibility of OSA, through in-plant validations using COREM’s LIBS mobile laboratory, has been demonstrated in four essential aspects: slurry sampling, LIBS chemical measurement, robustness for continuous operation, and functionality for industrial operators.INTRODUCTIONThere is a general need for optimization in the mineral industry. Process control is a favoured means to achieve this goal (McKee 1991). Real-time knowledge of process status is the key to effective control (Da Silva 1994). Only a few techniques, such as XRF, NMR and digital imaging, are currently amenable to chemically monitor industrial processes (Braden 2002). LIBS is an emerging technique with appealing characteristics for on-line and real-time measurement of bulk material (Lorenzen 1992, Palanco 2000). While our ultimate goal is to provide our industrial partners with performing monitoring tools, a shorter-viewed objective is to demonstrate the feasibility of developing a LIBS system for OSA. The LIBS technique has shown interesting capabilities for measuring solids, liquids, dusts and gases. Our work has focused on mineral slurries (Barrette 1999 and 2001, Turmel 1999). Special equipment is needed to perform in-plant validations. A mobile laboratory based on the LIBS technology has been assembled for this task."

Prior to 1995, the smelting process at the Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation (KUCC) smelter consisted of Noranda reactors and Pierce-Smith converters. In the consideration of expansion opportunities, the existing process did not lend itself to a program geared towards processing the total output of KUCC mining and milling operations. During 1989 and 1990, a number of smelting options were evaluated. The final selection was the Outokumpu flash smelting process, coupled with the new Kennecott-Outokumpu flash converting technology. Facilities were designed and installed to process 1:0 million tonnes per year of copper concentrate, with the ability to expand to 1.2 million tonnes per year. Following the shutdown of the smelter facility utilizing the Noranda technology in May 1995, the flash smelting, furnace commenced operation in June with the flash converting furnace startup following a few weeks later. The smelter has achieved design production targets and environmental goals. Current operating rates are at or above design rates for concentrate and matte processing. Emissions are lower than the permit levels and equate to less than 3.5 kg of SO2 per tonne of copper. This paper outlines the design, construction, startup and the first two years of operation of the modernized KUCC smelter.

"Surveying, and as a result, surveyors, have been around since the start of time, and it has been said that so has their methodology!The theodolite and tape have been the backbone of a time-tested practice that has led to ground breaking advancements such as electronic distance measurement (EDM), global positioning system (GPS) and positional laser scanning. However, it was the introduction of the unmanned aerial system (UAS) that has allowed mine sites such as St Ives to take the next step towards truly turning survey data into metadata.This paper will explain how the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was adapted to meet the requirements of a mine site supporting a major open pit operation, and how the open pit mining team adjusted their planning and production processes to maximise use of the extra data and information available to them.The advantages of the system include point cloud surveys with corresponding large-scale up-to-date photography and computer generated high detail contouring of mined areas that are then incorporated into the mine plan. All the while, the use of the UAV must be tailored to each specific problem encountered and a solution then matched.Citation:Steven, R, 2016. There have been many improvements and advancements in the application of neural networks in the mining industry. In this study, two advanced deep learning neural networks called recurrent neural network (RNN) and autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) were implemented in the simulation and prediction of limestone price variation. The RNN uses long shortterm memory layers (LSTM), dropout regularization, activation functions, mean square error (MSE), and the Adam optimizer to simulate the predictions. The LSTM stores previous data over time and uses it in simulating future prices based on defined parameters and algorithms. The ARIMA model is a statistical method that captures different time series based on the level, trend, and seasonality of the data. The auto ARIMA function searches for the best parameters that fit the model. Different layers and parameters are added to the model to simulate the price prediction. The performance of both network models is remarkable in terms of trend variability and factors affecting limestone price. The ARIMA model has an accuracy of 95.7% while RNN has an accuracy of 91.8%. This shows that the ARIMA model outperforms the RNN model. In addition, the time required to train the ARIMA is than that of the RNN. Predicting limestone prices may help both investors and industries in making economical and technical decisions, for example, when to invest, buy, sell, increase, and decrease production.

This Final Report covers the work performed for Contract No. H0377043, "Cables for Face Equipment" from August 1, 1977 to April 1, 1981. It reports the findings in three areas of research: cable protection, circuit-breakers, and high-voltage cable couplers. Laboratory and analytical studies have been conducted in the three areas to determine proper circuit-breaker settings, cable sizes, and coupler performance. Also, an extensive field-monitoring program was established to relate in-mine epxerience to laboratory findings. Further, various pieces of equipment was designed for laboratory testing, particularly in the area of cable reeling and unreeling.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory study to determine what effect use of water-jet-assisted cutting has on frictional-ignition suppression. A single bit with a steel tip, installed on a rotating drum, repeatedly made 22-in-long cuts in a block of Berea sandstone. The drum was operated in an enclosure that contained an explosive methane-air mixture. High-pressure front-mounted water jets operating at 2,000 to 5,000 psig and low-pressure rear-mounted sprays operating at 80 psig were used; the number of ignitions that occurred with each type of spray was compared. The rear-mounted spray was more effective for preventing frictional ignitions than the front-mounted water jet.

"Sherritt Gordon's Ruttan Mine is a copper-zinc operation located approximately 600 miles north-west of Winnipeg. Open pit mining began in 1973 at 10,000 Tpd., with a change over to underground mining in 1981 producing 7,500 Tpd. Ore is crushed to -3/4"" followed by rod and ball mill grinding (two ball mills in series), differential copper-zinc flotation, and dewatering. The copper and zinc concentrates are trucked 75 miles to Lynn Lake, where they are shipped by rail to the HBM&S smelter at Flin Flon.This paper describes a method used to predict the effect of grind particle size on metallurgical performance, as well as details on the copper and zinc metallurgical performance due to fine grinding in actual plant operation.Initial statistical studies on historical data (including ore source, head gr3de, grind, etc.) indicated that copper and zinc recoveries increased with fineness of grind, in the range of 50 to 65% -200 mesh.In order to extrapolate beyond 65% -200 mesh, and to develop expected nonlinear relations between grind, Cu concentrate grade, and recovery, the assays of screen fractions of copper concentrate and tailing were used to determin8 the relation between net smelter return (a function of grade and recovery) and grinding cost. The optimum economic grind would be that grind at which the net smelter return less grinding cost reached a maximum."

The importance of timbering, not only from a financial point of view but from an actual mining point of view, is so often overlooked or slightly glossed over by the average expert and investor, that I have thought it would prove interesting to go into the matter and to invite discussion upon the subject. We will first take small veins, or reefs as they are termed in some mining countries; and by small veins it is intended to denote fissures from a few inches to three feet. The ore body is supposed to be confined within well defined walls free from gangue matter, unless the casing can be defined as such. Now, if the walls are smooth and moderately hard, no timbering is required other than the stulls, which are braced from wall to wall in order to form platforms or stages to stope from. Should the reef from wall to wall prove payable, or should the vein be of a character to prohibit cleaning or sorting; and it be determined to send the whole of the stone to the, reduction works, the stuUs should be left in place until the section or block of ground is worked out, in order that if a weak spot in the walls (especially the hanging) occur, it would be possible, without any particularly extra expense or difficulty often times accompanied by danger to brace and secure the slabs. After the block became entirely stoped, it would pay where labour was cheap to remove the majority of timbers to stull another section.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is the accepted method for evaluating proposed mining and other industrial projects to obtain regulatory approval and to help companies plan for responsible development. Another evaluation system becoming increasingly more common for proposed projects is the Environmental, Social and Health Impact Assessment (ESHIA). An ESHIA differs from an EIA for its more comprehensive and inclusive approach to evaluate potential impacts on public health, and its ecosystem services approach to assessing biodiversity impacts. An ESHIA may also be required by certain lenders for financing major projects. Conducting an ESHIA for a proposed mining development is not without its challenges, with costs, scheduling, regulatory concordance and other constraints to be considered. This paper examines some benefits and challenges of ESHIAs and summarizes lessons learned using a case study approach.
