The process metallurgy of many nickel laterite smelting operations is controlled largely by the physical chemistry of the slag system. Consequently, accurate phase diagram information and physicochemical property data are essential to interpret and predict the behaviour and optimisation of the overall process. The system (SiO2 - MgO - FeO) first described by Bowen et al. between 1914 and 1935 and the system (SiO2 - MgO - FeO - Fe2O3) determined by Muan and Osborne in 1956 are of particular relevance to the study of nickel laterite smelting slags as these systems form a reasonable approximation of many industrial slags. This paper will review the literature for these (and other relevant) phase systems. In addition data available from the ternary and (quasi)ternary phase diagrams will be compared with data obtained from industrial slags. The physico-chemical properties under consideration will include; melting and crystallisation behaviour (solidus and liquidus temperatures), viscosity - temperature relationships, heat flux considerations, electrical conductivity, surface and interfacial tension.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines publication is intended to provide mining industry representatives and regulatory authorities with a reference package dealing with studies on hydrology and underground mine subsidence. An annotated bibliography and a list of additional sources are given and represent references published prior to June 1993. Ninety-two references ware identified and 72 obtained for assessment. Annotating the references included evaluating the study methodology and summarizing the basic results. The references are also compiled based on geographic location to aid the user in identifying articles of particular interest.

This Bureau of Mines report evaluates audio dosimeters, 3 sample units from each of 10 currently marketed brands. Each dosimeter was treated as a "black box" with the acoustic stimulus as the input and the accumulated dosage as the output. The dosimeter microphones were exposed to a sound field gener¬ated in an anechoic chamber. Characteristics evaluated include frequency response (100 to 8,000 Hz), level-time trade-off rate (88 to 117 db), status of calibration, crest-handling capability, and power consumption rate. Experi¬mental errors revealed by replication of the tests were found to be generally much smaller than variations in performance among the samples of any brand, and possibilities of further reducing the magnitude of these errors are discussed.

Following discovery in October 2004, commencement of development in February 2007 and first ore production in mid 2007, the Trident gold deposit, located in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia, has now been successfully mined for over three years. Three years of operational history has enabled the performance of the Trident underground mine to be reconciled against the mine plan and strategy proposed for the original feasibility study.The Trident deposit, initially based on two lode systems known as the Eastern Zone and Western Zone, has been continuously drilled, interpreted and re-interpreted over the period and as a result the addition of the Athena, Apollo and Artemis lode systems as well as numerous smaller scale lodes has been realised. The first three years has seen the Trident underground mine quickly move up to its 1 Mtpa design production rate. The mine plan and strategy used in the initial feasibility study and subsequently implemented, required sufficient flexibility to enable modification and optimisation to mine plans as ore zones were further defined. The ability to modify the mining plans has enabled Avoca to achieve its mining targets at Trident. With over 250 000 ounces gold produced to January 2010, the company is well positioned to achieve its ten year vision associated with the Higginsville Gold Project.This paper offers an account of operational experiences whilst providing comparison to assumptions and methodologies used in the original feasibility study. The paper is a sequel to a paper presented at the Tenth Underground Operators’ Conference held in Launceston, Tasmania titled Development Strategy of the Trident Underground Gold Mine.

For the past 120 years, Portland cement manufacture has been undertaken on the shores of the Whangarei Harbour in northern New Zealand. Through a serendipitous conjunction of geo-chemistry, the argillaceous marl found on Limestone Island in the harbour and Tikorangi Hill provides a perfect mix of the various elements required for strong and durable cement. Golden Bay Cement, and its predecessors, have been the guardians and managers of the use of these minerals. As the demands of the concrete industry have increased, so have the needs of the manufacturing process. Careful mapping of the resource at both Portland and Wilsonville Quarries has been undertaken. This has allowed the Company to change the Quarry operation from a purely volume basis to one of selection and blending of constituent minerals. Within the manufacturing process, change has also been introduced. Analytical techniques, using x-ray fluorescence spectrometry, microscopy and the application of modem data collation, has allowed fine tuning of the process. The Company now produces an increasing diverse range of products for both the domestic New Zealand market and exports to various South Pacific countries. This paper discusses the processing of limestone and æcement rockÆ into cement clinker, an intermediate synthetic mineral ground into cement. It examines control and blending regimes, and some methods used in determining process efficiency. An important technique ærediscoveredÆ has been the application of microscopy to clinker.  Examination of the major silicate minerals enables interpretation of the kiln processing and feedback to process operators. It also enables a prediction of indicated performance when ground into cement. Examples this paper give an insight into the use of minerals from Northland in some of the more important construction projects in modem New Zealand.

OZ Minerals’ Carrapateena mine is one of Australia’s newest ‘greenfield’ mining deposits. It will be a 4.25 Mtpa sub level cave underground operation, with an estimated mine life of 20 years. The integration of stakeholder values to inform project development influenced the social and environmental outcomes. A Native Title Mining agreement was developed in 12 months. Project primary approval was obtained 12 months from submission, with achievable licence conditions and one public comment. The project moved from a Pre-feasibility Study in 2016 to construction in 2018. Following recent international dam failures, the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) was a focus for Government approvals and stakeholder engagement. Significant effort was made into understanding the science around potential effects, impacts and risks. A leading practice Impact Assessment Framework that identified Sources, Pathways and Receptors was applied. A process of failure mode identification and layers of protection analysis was undertaken for robust design controls at each stage, while simultaneously transitioning between downstream and upstream discharge arrangements. Participatory selection of the TSF site and design layout was critical in managing project costs and environmental constraints, and in incorporating cultural heritage constraints and technical risks.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines report is to describe the methods and establish the basic economics for dragline, shovel-truck, and scraper mining systems. An overall view of the techniques of preliminary design and the cost involved is presented. Considerations of equipment selection, emphasizing short-range evaluation of required equipment, and a long-range evaluation are considered at a constant production rate over the life of a hypothetical mine. Separate cost analyses for each system were based on 1977 equipment prices, prevailing wage rates, and associated mining costs. Specific engineering and cost breakdown for such items as access roads, transmission line installation, rail spurs, etc., are beyond the scope of this report.

The Bureau of Mines determined the physical properties of southeastern Idaho phosphate fines as related to mineral composition, particle size and liberation, beneficiation, and potential use in structural clay products. The phosphate mineral in the fines was identified by unit-cell dimensions to be essentially the same as the phosphate mineral fluorapatite identified in the coarser sizes. The mean particle frequency as determined by electron-microscopy and pipet-analyses was between 0.5 and 0.2 micron. Liberation of the phosphate could not be definitely determined because of the weathered condition of the minerals and their extreme fineness. No beneficiation scheme was developed that would concentrate the phosphate into a marketable fertilizer product; therefore, forming and firing tests were made to demonstrate that the fines can be used to manufacture structural clay products.

The Goro Nickel Process, developed over a ten-year period, uses a number of novel processing steps and treats two ore types, limonite and saprolite, together. Nickel and cobalt are solubilized using a 270°C pressure acid leach in sulphuric acid, which rejects the bulk of the Fe into the leach residue as hematite particles. The leach liquor, after CCD, is aerated to oxidize any ferrous iron to the ferric form and is neutralized with limestone to precipitate iron as hydroxides together with gypsum from the neutralization of the free acid. Further neutralization with lime, together with steps to remove suspended solids, reduces the iron to trace concentrations. Nickel and cobalt are directly recovered from the low-iron leach solution by primary solvent extraction using Cyanex 301® (SXl) in a high-strength hydrochloric acid solution. Nickel is subsequently separated from cobalt in a secondary solvent extraction circuit using tri-isooctylamine. A granular nickel oxide is made by pyrohydrolysis, and this allows the recycling of hydrochloric acid to SXl. The process is currently being commercialized to produce approximately 60,000 t/y of nickel as nickel oxide granules and approximately 5,400 t/y of cobalt as cobalt carbonate. This paper describes the process development to control the Fe concentration in the SX1 feed solution.

Silver tarnishes readily in common atmospheres and is accelerated in humid atmospheres. Tarnish is the formation of silver sulphide on the surface of silver when it is exposed to a wide range of sulphur-containing atmospheres. Tarnish is unattractive and highly undesirable, and can be removed either with a silver polish or a chemical dip. Dips are generally only recommended when heavy black tarnish cannot be removed with a polish, and care must be taken during cleaning because these can contain aggressive chemicals and give off hazardous and unpleasant smelling fumes. Polishes work best for large areas of plain undecorated silver, and form part of a regular cleaning programme. Some polishes contain chemicals that inhibit tarnishing, but these generally only have a short life. Several methods have been developed to reduce tarnish formation on Silver; these include alloying, surface treatment, and coatings. The authors evaluated a range of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) surface treatments and coatings in earlier research. Four treatments/coatings increased the time to noticeable tarnish by more than ten fold, and the results were reported at the International Corrosion Congress (ICC) in 2005, and at the Mint Directors Conference (MDC) in 2006. SAM treatment using 95% 1-hexadecanethiol (C16H34S) was found to give good anti-tarnish performance and showed potential for the commercial treatment of Sterling silver. Therefore research was performed to optimise the methods of application of this type of coating to provide an easier, faster, and more-user friendly technique to provide an anti-tarnish treatment. Measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise and attenuation along a hoist rope were made in an operating hard-rock mine, Lucky Friday Mine, located near Wallace, Idaho. Spectra of electromagnetic noise generated by various pieces of equipment, spectra of specific noise signals at various depths, and noise and attenuation on the 4250 foot (1295 meter) hoist, were measured. Three techniques were used to make the measurements. First, noise was measured over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief time periods. Data were recorded using broadband analog magnetic tape for later transformation to spectral plots. Second, noise amplitudes were recorded at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of time to provide data for amplitude probability distributions. A third technique gave attenuation data through the direct measurement of field strength at various depths. The specific measured results are given in a number of spectral plots, amplitude probability distribution plots and amplitude curves as a function of depth.

The labour question is one that has caused mine managers much thought and anxiety and is likely to continue to do so as long as human beings exist. The difficulty is to devise some arrangement whereby the interests of miner and mine ownerare identical. Mines cannot be worked without capital, and capital is no good without labour, yet, though both have the mine in common, their interests are not exactly the same. Some men are happy so long as they can scrape through by exerting themselves as little as possible, but capitalists do not work mines for charity, they want some return for their money.Where a large number of men are employed there are bound to be examples of all sorts, good and bad, and it is because one cannot depend on all, that different methods of employment have to be adopted. Which method is selected depends to a great extent on the labour market, local conditions, nature of the ore and the way in which it occurs.A big step towards success is obtained by securing the services of good bosses, not only those who know how work should be done, but men who have a knowledge of human nature. It is a big mistake to be too lenient with a man, also to be unnecessarily harsh. A good boss will always be sought out by good men who have worked under him before, or who have heard of him from others. Bis-basic ethers off fluorene and fluoren-9-substituted derivatives such as tilorone have been reported to inhibit silica-induced fibrosis in rats. The potential antifibrotic potency of 2,7-bis (diethylamino) ethixy fluorine fluorenone (F-9-H.H), fluorenoxime (F-9-one), and fluorenol (F-9-ol) was F-9-axime > F-9-one ~ F-9-H,H > F-9-ol. Since the release of reactive oxygen species and growth factors from alveolar macrophages (AM) in response to silica exposure has been linked to the development of pulmonary fibrosis, the present study was carried out to determine the inhibitory effects of these compounds on rat AM activity in vitro. The following parameters were monitored: (1) cellular viability; (2) zymosan-induced respiratory burst activity (superoxide and hydrogen peroxide release, chemiluminescence, and oxygen consumption) of AM; (3) drug binding to AM; and (4) lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated interleukin- I (IL-1) release from AM. The bis-basic ethers, at 40 did not affect cell viability when incubated with AM for 30 min, but significantly inhibited zymosan-induced macrophage respiratory burst activity. The inhibitory effect of these agents was F-9-oxime > F-9-one ~F-9-H,H > F-9-ol. Binding of these drugs to AM was time and dose dependent, and exhibited the following binding affinity: F-9-oxime > F-9-one > F-9-H,H > F-9-ol. F-9- oxime was shown to inhibit LPS-stimulated IL-I release by AM in a dose-dependent manner. This inhibition of IL-1 release by AM cannot be explained as a decrease in viability. In addition, these drugs were also shown to impair human fibroblast proliferation in response to serum stimuli without impairing cell viability. These results indicate a positive correlation between drug binding to AM or other cell types and their inhibitory effects on cellular activities including oxygen consumption, superoxide release, hydrogen peroxide secretion, chemiluminescence, IL-I release, and proliferation. The ability of-these bis-basic ethers to modify AM and fibroblast functions in vitro suggests that further investigation of their reported antifibrotic potency in vivo is warranted.

A comprehensive field study has been carried out to measure the background air quality status and identify the air pollution sources from opencast mines around a heritage site in India. Air quality modeling has been carried out to envisage dust concentration due to the existing and closed mines in the region. The predicted total PM10 and PM2.5 levels at the selected receptor locations ranged from 86.39 to 194.89 and from 34.82 to 99.55 µg/m³, respectively.

OF all the machinery used in mining work, mine cars are probably the most abused. They are hauled through water and muck, up hill and down grade, whipped around curves, bumped and jerked, and exposed to the ravages of the weather. However, as a general rule their lubrication is not altogether neglected. The mine operator may not heed the extra drag that a frozen conveyor bearing gives, but he is all too aware of the increased load that faulty mine car wheels put on his power plant. When the circuit breakers begin to fly, and when his mine loco- motives come out with only half the cars that they were able to carry a month before, then neglected mine car wheel lubrication becomes apparent, and woe to the person responsible.

In 2011 the forecasted world demand for iron ore continues to grow, and during this time Australia is looked upon as a reliable supplier of high quality ore. The expansion of the current Australian mines is unlikely to meet the forecast demand. New mines are therefore being actively explored for and when discovered, are quickly being developed into mines in order to meet the world’s hunger for steel.The Solomon Project area is a large new iron ore discovery, located in the central Hamersley Ranges of the Pilbara province in Western Australia. The first Fortescue exploration drill holes commenced on the project in 2007 and to date three billion tonnes (Bt) of iron ore have been defi ned within the project area. Fortescue is fast-tracking the development of the ‘Solomon Stage 1’ project, with rail and mine construction commencing during 2011, and ore to be railed to Fortescue’s existing shipping operations at Port Hedland commencing in 2012. At a designed production rate of 60 Mt/a, the Solomon operation will be one of the biggest production centres of iron ore in the Pilbara.Deposit types include the three dominant mineralisation styles of the Pilbara province, being bedded iron deposits (BID), Channel iron deposits (CID) and detrital iron deposits (DID). All these mineralisation styles are present in large concentrations within the Solomon project area, and when mined will produce two product streams. These are a single product of CID, and a combined product from a blend of BID and DID material.This paper defines the geological characteristics of the Solomon iron deposits as recognised through the exploration and development of this vast resource over the three years since exploration commenced on the project.

U.S. Bureau of Mines research has found that maintenance of surface mining equipment is involved in slightly more than one-third (34.1 pct) of all surface mining accidents. Two groups of machines, haulage trucks and power shovels, accounted for over one-half of all surface mining mobile equipment maintenance accidents in 1978-84. Maintenance work-time histories for these machines were compared with accident records to identify the most hazardous-to-maintain systems within the machines. Recommendations to reduce the accident risk associated with maintenance of these hazardous systems are presented.

The electric arc furnace has characteristics which make it attractive for a number of metallurgical applications. Some of these characteristics are: high thermal efficiency, the possibility of attaining very high temperatures, low off-gas volume compared to fuel-fired furnaces, no impurities are introduced by the heat source, and impurities in only minor amounts are introduced by the electrodes. It also has disadvantages, the chief ones being the relatively high cost of electrical energy compared to fossil-fuel energy and the fact that, when oxide ores are smelted using carbon as reductant, the off-gases emitted are rich in carbon monoxide. As in many other pyrometallurgical processes, fumes and dust are emitted from melting or smelting operations. In many installations, some or all of the off-gases are flared, thereby wasting their energy and contributing to atmospheric pollution. During the last eight years, a shaft-electric furnace has been under development at the Mines Branch, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ottawa, Canada. This project was initiated to try to overcome, or at least minimize, the disadvantages of the electric furnace. Experience on other projects, prior to the beginning of this program, had indicated that preparation of the charge materials, for example by sizing raw ore, sintering concentrates and crushing and sizing the sinter, or agglomerating concentrates into uniform-sized pellets, could make a substantial contribution towards achieving success in arc-furnace smelting projects; This entire

This report documents the status of a laser-based underground guidance system for tracking and controlling the movements of underground mobile mining equipment. This research is part of a multiple project effort at the U.S. Bureau of Mines to increase mine safety and efficiency by developing technology for computer-assisted mining. Guidance systems, which can track and control the movements of underground mining equipment, are essential during computer-assisted mining operations. A continuous mining machine at the Bureau's surface test facility served as the test-bed for initial development and experimentation of this guidance system. Subsequently, a continuous mining machine in an underground mine served as the platform for in-mine experimentation The first section of this report includes details of the laser sensors, communication network, and computer hardware. The next section includes experimental results, which show the system capable of accurately tracking and controlling the tram maneuvers of a continuous miner underground. The final section discusses conclusions and recommendations.
