Helium used as a tracer gas in petroleum reservoirs continues to show great promise as a new tool for the oil and gas industry, according to tests conducted jointly by the Bureau of Nines and The Pure Oil Co. in-the Cabin Creek field, Boone and Kanawha Counties, W. Va. Helium, when used as a, tracer gas, is mixed with natural gas being injected into a reservoir for secondary recovery of oil, recycling, pressure-maintenance, or other purposes. Three separate experimental helium tracer-gas tests were run in the Cabin Creek, W. Va., field, wherein helium was added as a tracer to the natural gas that was being injected into the oil-bearing Berea sandstone. The results obtained in each test permitted determining the direction and rate of travel of the injected gas, calculating the volume of injected gas in the gas produced at the various wells, and determining the nature of the transition from natural gas to injected gas during a gas-injection program. Data were obtained on the effects obtained from waves of injected gab containing 1 percent and containing 5 percent helium and from a wave of essentially pure helium injected into the formation.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a flammability study of plastic ventilation ducts. Six rigid 16-in-diam fiberglass-reinforced plastic ducts from five manufacturers were examined using laboratory-scale, large-scale, and full-scale fire tests. The laboratory-scale tests included the American Society for Testing and Materials E162 radiant panel test, the E2863 oxygen index test, and the standardized small-scale flammability test (S3FT) developed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor, and replicated by the Bureau of Mines. Ten-foot lengths of the same ducts were also subjected to a large-scale vertical fire test, and 20-to 30-ft lengths were tested in a full-scale in-mine fire test at the Bureau's Lake Lynn Laboratory mine. The data from the laboratory-scale radiant panel test and oxygen index test indicated that the ducts were fire-resistant, However, five of the six ducts failed the S3FT and vertical fire tests, and four of the ducts failed the full-scale in-mine tests with flame propagation rates that ranged from 3 to 10 ft/min. The results indicate the need for improved fire-resistant plastic ducts. The good agreement between the S3FT re-sults and the vertical and full-scale tests show that the S3FT provides a good indication of the flammability of fiberglass-reinforced plastic ducting under realistic fire conditions.

In this Bureau of Mines study, an equation is derived for the limit burning velocity for divergent, spherical propagation from an ignition kernel of radius, r: (Su)e = ( ) . For flame propagation into a preexisting, stretching velocity gradient of magnitude dv/dx, the limit velocity is (Su)e = (a dv/dx)1/2. These formulations are shown to be equivalent to the fluid dynamic concepts of Damkoh1er, Kar10-vitz, and Markstein. Existing data for the b10woff limits of flames are shown to give excellent agreement with those concepts provided that proper account is taken of two dilution effects: composition dilution caused by entrainment and velocity gradient dilution caused by flow expansion. Approximate flow-field solutions are also derived for the unburned gas motion above an upward propagating, spherical flame kernel in buoyancy-induced flows. It is shown that;, the upward hemisphere propagates toward a stagnation plane in a counterflow configuration involving the balance between the combustion force, which accelerates the cold gas upward, and the buoyancy force that accelerates the cold gas downward. The position of the stagnation plane above the upward propagating hemisphere is related to the ratio of the buoyant velocity, vb, to the burning velocity, Suo Extinction of the upward propagating wave occurs by flame stretch in that counterflow configuration when n = Vb/Su begins to exceed the expansion ratio, Pu/Pb' and the wave is blown off by its own buoyancy-induced flow field.

ABSTRACT: The paper is devoted to two major aspects related to the abandonment of salt mines: 1)- Long-term risk associated with the mechanical instability of surface and its consequences for public security and properties. 2)- Long term dissolution and transport of salt resulting from its communication with groundwater. Basic characteristic features of salt deposits and mining methods are presented through the studies already undertaken on French mines. This analysis allows to identify major hazards encountered in different traditional salt mines and solution-mining cavities. In particular, the role of overburden (presence and thickness of salt layer in exploitation roof, presence of clayey rocks or hard rocks e.g. dolomite or anhydrite), presence of water-bearing strata and possibly natural brine levels, discontinuities, etc. are discussed. In the second part, the main features of mechanical behaviour of salt (creep, damage) as well as transfer processes of this material are presented. The influence of these aspects on the long term evolution of abandoned salt mines is then analysed. KEY WORDS: exploitation, abandonment, salt, mechanical, stability, transport, solution, brine. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Artikel bezieht sich auf zwei bedeutende Aspekte beim Salzabbau: 1)-Das langsfristige Risiko zur Bodenoberflächeunbeständigkeit und sein Einfluss über Mensch= und Gütersicherheit. 2)-Die langsfristige Auflösung und Beförderung des Salz beruhen sich auf Studien über französiche Bergbauen. Diese Analyse emöglicht es, die bedeutendesten Risiken in verschiedenen Salzgruben zu identifizieren, bzw. Traditionellen oder durch Auflösung abgebauten. Insbesondere wird die Rolle des Deckgebirges (Vorhandensein und Dicke von Salzschicht am Dach des Grube, Beisein von Tanlager oder hartem Gestein wie Bitterkalk oder Anhydrid), Beisein von wasserhaltigem Boden und/oder gesalzenen Wasserflächen, Trennflächen, usw… erötert. Im zweiten Teil werden die haupsächlichen Eigenschaften des Salzverhaltens (Kriechen und Beschädigung) beschrieben. Les principales caractéristiques de gisements et d’exploitations de sel sont présentées en s’appuyant sur les études antérieures réalisées sur les exploitations en France. Cette analyse permet d’identifier les risques majeurs rencontrés dans différentes mines de sel traditionnelles ou exploitées par dissolution. En particulier, le rôle du recouvrement (présence et épaisseur d’un banc de sel au toit de l’exploitation, présence de terrains argileux ou de roches dures telles que la dolomie ou de l’anhydrite), présence de terrains aquifères ou de nappes salées éventuelles, discontinuités, etc. sont discutées. The development of fire hazard criteria for noise control products in underground coal mines are presented. Qualifying requisites of the criteria include maintaining miners' safety, allowing for maximum use of noise control products, and economic feasibility. The burning process is analyzed for its relationship to fire hazard criteria developed by NASA and the FAA, and the mine environment is analyzed in conjunction with the end-use applications of noise control products. Also, the interim fire hazard specification developed by MSHA is appraised as it applies to end-use applications of noise control products. From these analyses and a literature survey, fire hazard criteria are developed. They include an initial screening procedure that evaluates the level of flammability testing required. Fire tests that may be indicated are the Vertical Flame Test, the Ignition Temperature Test, and the 25-Foot Tunnel Test.

The H-3 Project is planning, design, and construction of a 10-mile (16 km)-long final segment of new highway that traverses the Koolau mountain range in Oahu. Interstate H-3 traverses North Halawa Valley on one side of the Koolau Mountains and Haiku Valley on the other side. The project includes a tunnel through the mountain range. The one-mile (1.6 km)-long twin-bore Trans-Koolau Tunnel will have two lanes in each direction. The total roadway width including shoulders in each bore will be 38 ft (11.6 m). The geologic and geohydrologic conditions along the alignment present a variety of tunneling problems. Geologic conditions consist of volcanic materials deposited generally in fairly thin basaltic layers. These volcanic materials generally weather down to "MH" soils which are compressible but relatively strong. Perched ground water that is recharged by heavy rainfall is present in the mountains. The paper presents results of initial geologic surveys and exploratory boring, and plans for exploratory tunneling and testing programs. A site specific classification method developed to characterize the weathered profile is presented.

A reconnaissance for sources of scandium and a metallurgical investigation of recovery methods for byproduct scandium from uranium mill solutions were conducted by the Bureau of Mines. The work on scandium was undertaken to obtain information on domestic resources and to explore and develop recovery procedures in consonance with the Bureau's long-range program for conservation and wise utilization of mineral resources. The element scandium is widely distributed in the earth's crust in trace amounts, but it seldom occurs as an important constituent in any mineral. An exception is thortveitite, (Sc,Y)2 Si207) a rare mineral that contains various amounts of scandium and yttrium and may contain up to 42 percent scandium oxide (SC203). Knowledge of the chemistry of scandium has expanded rapidly in recent years (1, 4, 9)4 but only fragmentary information is available about the metal because it is still largely a laboratory curiosity without established uses (2, 3). A recent study shows some of the physical proper-ties of the metal are (1) density of 3.05 grams per cubic centimeter) (2) melting point of 1,540° C, (3) hexagonal close-packed structure) (4) hardness of about 50 Brinell (500-kilogram load), and (5) an alloy behavior similar to yttrium and rare-earth metals (2). The price of $2,850 a pound for scandium oxide of 99.9 percent purity and $2,700 a pound for oxide of 99 percent purity reflects the scarcity and complex chemistry of the element.

Plots were established on regraded abandoned mine spoil to determine if nearby good quality spoil could be used in place of topsoil for the reclamation of these sites. Gypsum, calcium chloride, and power plant ash were also tested to determine the effectiveness of these materials in reclaiming these sites. Two sites were selected on which very little vegetation was growing on highly sodic spoil material. Gypsum, calcium chloride, and ash were added to the spoil at a rate designed to reduce the (sodium adsorption ratio) SAR in the surface 15 cm to 10 or less. The good quality spoil (replacement soil) was then laid on the swface at rates of 0, 5 or 15 cm of material. The plots were seeded to a mixture of smooth bromegrass (Bromus enennis Leyss.), crested wheatgrass (Agropyron desertorum (Fisch. Ex Link) Schult.) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). The addition of 5 or 15 cm of replacement spoil significantly improved vegetative growth on these sites. Chemical treatments had no effect on vegetative growth. Weathered ash showed no adverse effects on plant growth or soil properties.

"1. INTRODUCTIONTo say that the environment will be a dominant issue in the 1990' s is an understatement. A world-wide ""green revolution"" is taking place not only with the general public and politicians, but in the boardrooms and plant facilities of corporations around the world. There is probably not a plant manager who has not been requested by his corporation to assist in some way on environmental issues by providing advice and strategy, by dealing with customer or community concerns, by considering environmental matters in transactions, by developing new environmental compliance policies and requirements, and so on.There are, in the author's view, three main challenges for the mining industry in the environmental area in the 1990's. This paper will discuss each in turn. The first challenge is the concept of ""sustainable development"". Whatever the meaning of this much-debated phrase, we are rapidly moving beyond the buzzword, and into the specifics. It will clearly impact on the way we manage our companies, our communities and our personal lives.The second is the challenge of personal liability; particularly for officers, directors, supervisors and managers of the corporation. For example, in Ontario today, a good percentage of prosecutions for pollution offences are against individuals, usually managers and supervisors, in addition to the prosecutions against the corporation itself for the same offence. In all likelihood, prosecutions will increase in number and will increasingly be directed at individuals. A corporate president has already served a jail term for contempt of court related to his corporation's breach of a court order related to sewer by-law offences. Although the case is on appeal, another president has become the first officer in Canada to be sentenced to jail for violation of an environmental protection statute. Other corporate officers and directors have recently been charged with breach of their duty under Ontario's Environmental Protection Act."

The leaching kinetics of a zinc concentrate in autoclave reactors were studied. A sample of concentrate from Bolivia, with typical mineralogical characteristics of the Andes region, was used. A concentrate containing 49% zinc and 145 ppm of silver from Minera Viacha was characterized chemically and mineralogically (atomic absorption, X-ray diffraction, and SEM microscopy) and tested in bench scale reactors. Two types of autoclave batch reactors were used at 40 bars of oxygen pressure and three levels of temperature (150°C, 200°C and 250°C). The solid to solution leaching ratio was 1:10 (10% sulphuric acid concentration). The effect of the particle size of the concentrate on the leaching kinetics was studied (P80: 145 and 45 µm). Iron from the leaching solution was removed by precipitation by increasing the pH in order to generate a clean solution for zinc electrowinning. The zinc solution was used to evaluate the feasibility of cathode production at the laboratory scale. Zinc extractions with higher liberation (P80 = 45 µm) reached up to 98%. Ground concentrate with finer sizes resulted in agglomeration and the use of dispersing agents did not improve slurry mixing. The leaching solution contained 55 g/L zinc and 7 g/L iron; it was purified by precipitating iron. The precipitation was evaluated using sodium hydroxide and ammonium hydroxide. In the first case, a colloidal suspension of ferric salts was formed while in the second case, different iron compounds were precipitated. The precipitate obtained with ammonium hydroxide had better filtering properties. Electrowinning was carried out using two types of cathodes (stainless steel and aluminium) and solutions purified with ammonium hydroxide. Zinc cathodes formed on stainless steel presented a better physical quality than those formed on aluminium.

Develop tools that mine personnel can use to comply with 30 CFR,Part 47. Background The new MSHA rule, 30 CFR, Part 47 (also known as the HazCom rule), requires all mines to develop a written program to track hazardous chemicals at their sites. More specifically, the rule requires that mines list all chemicals and determine which are hazardous; develop a written Hazard Communication Program; label all containers used to store hazardous chemicals; obtain or develop Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for all chemicals stored or produced; provide miners with training in working around hazardous chemicals; and make information about hazardous chemicals available to all workers. All mines with six or more employees must have complied with the new rule by September 23, 2002, and mines with five or fewer employees will have to be in compliance by March 21, 2003.

The most serious safety problems encountered in U. S. underground coal mines today are related to the roof bolting operation. Also, roof bolting is usually the operation which limits coal production of the section. The purpose of my paper is to review some of the research, developments, and new ideas related to roof bolting. Many of these ideas have originated at. coal mines or with manufacturers. Most of the research on fundamental improvements has been funded by, and is a part of, the excellent and broad plans of the Bureau of Mines.

The Phu Kham Copper-Gold Operation (Phu Kham Operation) is located in the Lao People's Democratic Republic and is owned and operated by the Lao-registered company, Phu Bia Mining Limited (PBM). Australian-headquartered copper and gold producer, PanAust Limited holds a 90 per cent interest in PBM; the Government of Laos owns the remaining 10 per cent. The Phu Kham Operation was commissioned in 2008 with an initial concentrator nameplate throughput of 12 million tonnes per annum (Mt/a). Subsequent improvement projects, including the Phu Kham Upgrade Project (PKU), completed in 2012, and the Phu Kham Increased Recovery Project (IRP), completed in 2013, increased the design throughput to 18 Mt/yr. In 2016, the actual mill throughput exceeded 19 Mt/a, this throughput is budgeted to be maintained until the end of 2020.The concentrator flotation circuit upgrade, completed during the IRP, called for a non-selective bulk sulphide concentrate to be generated from the rougher circuit. This in turn caused the mechanical flotation cells in the cleaner circuit, particularly those in the second cleaner bank, to become volumetrically overload. The overload reduced the cleaner circuit performance to approximately 92 per cent copper recovery at a 23 per cent copper concentrate grade, below the expected 95 per cent recovery. This bottleneck restricted copper units entering the plant to approximately 14.5 tonnes per hour (t/h) due to uncontrolled recirculating load build-up in the mechanical cleaning circuit.Maintaining the operating methodologies would have led to a copper production shortfall beyond 2016, to address this shortfall the Phu Kham Operation looked to optimise the Jameson Cell and mechanical cleaner circuit performance. The work included fundamental application of flotation practice and modelling, mineralogical analysis, bubble size analysis, plant surveys and test work. The results were used to develop and implement an innovative automated control system strategy incorporating flotation theory and operating strategies. The automation has the ability to quickly adapt to disturbances in the circuit and maintain optimised performance with little or no intervention by flotation operators.Upon completion, cleaner recovery increased to 95 per cent at a final concentrate grade of 23 per cent copper, and copper units entering the plant increased to 17.5 t/h.CITATION:Baas, D and Mikhael Gurieff, L, 2018. The basic objective of this project was to determine the permeability of coal fracture systems as a function of effective stress. The detailed steps in accomplishing this objective are given in Article I of the contract under which the work was conducted as follows: Sec. 1.1 The objective shall be to determine the permeability of the coal fracture system as a function of effective stress. At least three bituminous coals shall be studied and at least five samples of each coal shall be tested. The sample size shall be as large as possible to be representative of coal found in the seam; a minimum of four inches is preferred.

South African coal discards derived from feed coal for thermoprocesses pose human health and environmental problems and incur high disposal costs. These issues need to be resolved. Coal fines and a coal fines/ K2CO3 blend were combusted at 700°C in a laboratory rotary kiln to produce ashes containing metakaolinite (Al2O3.2SiO2) and illite/muscovite/orthoclase amorphous materials. The blend ash and coal fines ash, containing 18% K2O and <1% K2O respectively, were leached with water and with 1 M and 8 M NaOH at 80°C for 4 hours using a solid to liquid ratio of 1:5. The 8 M NaOH leach yielded 17% sodalite (Na8Si6Al6O24(OH)2) formation through SiO32-, Al(OH)4-, and Na+ precipitation in the leached ashes. The 1 M NaOH leach yielded no sodalite. X-ray fluorescence analysis of the original ashes and leached ashes showed low Al and Si dissolution efficiencies due to the sodalite formation. Sequential NaOH leaching resulted in the highest potassium dissolution efficiency of 89% for the ashes of fines/K2CO3 blend and 59% for the fines. It may be possible to increase the ash-derived zeolite concentration by using even higher NaOH concentrations (12–20 M NaOH) during leaching. Sodalite derived from coal ash could possibly be utilized for water purification in industrial applications, or as molecule separators. The potassium-containing liquid could be used in fertilizer manufacture.

A mineral survey of the approximately 144,000-acre Borah Peak study area was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1985 at the request of the U.S. Forest Service. The area studied included the Borah Peak RARE II roadless areas (No. 14210, 119,864 acres of land recommended for wilderness designation; and No. X4210, 18,440 acres of land recommended as non-wilderness) and other contiguous Forest Service administered land. The study area is in Challis National Forest in southeast Idaho about 30 miles south-southeast of Challis, ID. Burnt Creek, a conterminous study area to the northeast, on lands administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Managment, was examined concurrently. Dolomite and limestone inferred reserve bases exceed 1 billion tons each within the Borah Peak study area. The material is widespread and of high quality. Extensive sampling and more detailed mapping are required to better define the resources; however, ample dolomite and limestone occur nearby, outside the study area. Dolomite is the main constituent of several geologic formations within the study area. Sample analyses indicate that the more than 1,000-ft-thick Jefferson Formation dolomite is the most pure and is equivalent to material being mined at a dolomite-to-magnesium processing plant near Addy, WA. Analyses from limestone-bearing formations underlying much of the study area indicate that large quantities of the limestone may be suitable for a variety of uses.

"Carbides and nitrides of iron are being considered as magnetic materials for high-density recording due to their chemical stability and high-saturation magnetization values (> 100 emu/g). Iron carbides and iron nitrides with magnetic properties suitable for magnetic media were synthesized by employing a novel synthesis procedure based on fluidization of powders in reactive atmospheres. Fluidized-bed reactors of laboratory, bench, and pilot scale were employed for the synthesis of iron carbide, FeSC2, by reducing and carburizing U-Fe203 in the temperature range of 300 to 550 ºC. A temperature of 400· ºC and a reaction time of 2 to 3 h are found to be optimal for the synthesis of iron carbide. When the carburization was carried out in a reducing and carburizing atmosphere such as carbon monoxide, nucleation and growth of FeSC2 occurred directly from Fe304 with no intermediate phases such as FeO or Fe. Longer carburization times resulted in the deposition of carbon on the surfaces of FeSC2 particles due to Boudouard reaction, and higher temperatures favored the formation of a mixture of carbides such as FesC2 and Fe3C. Iron nitrides were synthesized by reducing u-Fe203 in the temperature range of 350 to 550 ºC, followed by nitriding in the temperature range of 350 to 550·ºC. The powders were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analyzer, and a vibrating sample magnetometer.IntroductionRecent demand for high-quality recording of optical, electrical, and audio signals generated interest in magnetic tapes with high-recording densities as compared to the conventional magnetic tapes based on U-Fe203. At present, commercially available magnetic tapes contain maghematite, U-Fe203, as a magnetic material with a saturation magnetization of90 emu/g and a coercive force of 400 Oe. Recording of signals at a higher density per unit volume of magnetic material demands magnetic materials with high-saturation magnetization and a reasonable coercive force. Although metallic iron particles possess a saturation magnetization of 130 to 150 emu/g and a high coercive force of 1000 Oe, the gradual oxidation of iron-to-iron oxides (of lower saturation magnetization) prevents the use of iron particles for high-density recording. In contrast, iron carbides such as FesC2, Fe7C3 and iron nitrides such as Fe4N and Fe3N possess excellent magnetic properties coupled with good electrical conductivities and high hardness. The carbides and nitrides of iron have generated significant interest as magnetic materials for the next generation of magnetic tapes due to their unique magnetic properties and relatively greater oxidation resistance as compared to metallic iron particles [1-4]."

This Bureau of Mines report presents a brief summary of the explosion trends in United States coal mines for the past 160 years. These trends show that in spite of the overall improvements in mine safety, the number of fatalities from ignitions of methane has actually increased in recent years. Suggestions are made of procedures that can be utilized to reverse this trend.

Surface and subsurface stabilization of mining-related wastes through revegetation depends upon the physical, chemical, and biological condition of the waste following mining. Mining disturbances can significantly alter the soil physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of a site, reducing or eliminating mycorrhizal fungi from the soil. Mycorrhizae are economically and ecologically important because they can alleviate environmental stresses caused by lack of proper soil condition and because they are vital to stabilization of mining waste by increasing plant survival and biomass through increased nutrient and water uptake. This report discusses some of the ecological factors that may affect mycorrhizae-plant associations on mining-related wastes and provides general information on mycorrhizae inoculation technology.
