The primary use of a portable crusher, i.e., a crusher mounted on crawlers or tires, in the rock and mining industries is to reduce costs by permitting the substitution of conveyor belt haulage for truck or track haulage. The usual sequence of operations in surface mining is drilling, blasting, loading, haulage, and crushing. Haulage is normally accomplished by truck or track-mounted cars, the latter method being used for the longer distances. However, by using a portable crusher in the pit, the sequence of operations would be changed so that the crushing stage would occur before haulage (Fig. 1). Such a sequence would permit the use of conveyors to replace the more expensive truck or track haulage methods. Since most quarry and open pit operations normally require a crushing stage, the only additional costs incurred will be due to the investment required to purchase or construct a mobile arrangement for a crusher. But this factor has to be weighed against the advantages to be gained by conveyor haulage. As shown in Fig. 2, transportation of material by belt conveyor over short distances is less ex- pensive than by truck. The inclination of the belt has no effect on belt speed; consequently, the hourly tonnage moved remains the same. Conversely, the output rate of trucks as expressed in tons or ton- miles per shift decreases proportionally to the haulage speed, which is considerably slowed by the steepness of the road (Fig. 3a). Although maximum possible grades and maximum economic grades of haulage are greater for a belt than for a truck (over the same total lift), the longer haulage distances favor the use of trucks.

ZINC is one of the effective elements introduced to enhance the strength of aluminum. This strengthening is principally attributable to the high solid solubility of zinc in aluminum and the pronounced variation of solubility with temperature. Consequently an accurate determination of the solid solubility curve is desirable. The solid solubility relations have been studied by numerous investigators. Shepherd' first established the existence of a solid solution region at the aluminum end of the diagram (y phase) by specific volume and microscopic determinations. Bauer and Vogel2 published a constitutional diagram which showed the limits of solid solubility as determined by thermal and microscopic methods. Hanson and Gayler3 presented the aluminum-zinc diagram which is now most generally accepted (Fig. 1). Chill-cast samples were given thermal treatments designed to obtain equilibrium conditions, quenched, and microscopically examined.. The solubility was placed between 15 to 20 per cent at 600 C., 20 to 22 per cent at 140° C. and 36 to 38 per cent at 270° C. Sander and Meissner4 decidedly modified the limits of they phase field of Hanson and Gayler's diagram by using similar methods on chill-cast specimens annealed for a shorter period of time. Tanabe,5 utilizing dynamic hardness, electrical conductivity and dilatometric measurements of specimens at temperature, obtained values comparable to Hanson and Gayler's at room temperature, but appreciably lower at higher temperatures. Nishimura6 concluded from age-hardening results of aluminum-zinc alloy chill castings, which had been quenched from 400° to 500° C., that the solubility of zinc in aluminum at room temperature is less than 5

In another place,* the writer has called attention to the modern methods of the laboratory investigation of clay, and it is desired here simply to discuss one branch of the subject, which, though of considerable importance, has heretofore received little attention in this country, viz., the rational analysis of clay. In order, however, the better to point out the bearings and advantages of this procedure, it is necessary to refer briefly to the ultimate analysis as well. The remarks in this paper refer only to the use of clay for the manufacture of clay-products. Pure clay or kaolin-f is extremely refractory, possesses little plasticity, and usually shrinks aud warps considerably in burning. Even the smallest proportion of impurities changes these properties, so that the kaolin exhibits variations in shrinkage, plasticity, tensile strength, fusibility, and often color when burned. The majority of nearly pure kaolins consist of kaolinite (A1,O2 2SiO,, 2H20), undecomposed feldspar, and quartz. The kaolinite generally forms the finest particles of the clay and is known as the clay-substance, while the rest of the clay-particles are collectively spoken of as sand. In the ordinary or ultimate analysis, the substances generally determined are silica, alumina, ferric oxide, lime, magnesia, alkalies and water. An analysis of this type simply regards the clay as a mixture of elements or oxides, but gives no clue as to the actual condition in which these substances exist, i.e., whether as silicates, oxides or carbonates, etc., a point which it is of the highest importance to know; for the individual components of the clay influence its properties not only according

ALL of the prospects that later became mines in the Ducktown district were discovered prior to 1854, and most of them were exploited before the turn of the century. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the exploration and current development of the Boyd mine, discovered in 1853. It is in the heart of the Ducktown Basin, in the extreme southeast corner of Tennessee, and is being developed by the Tennessee Copper Co. GEOLOGY The geology of the district has been fully described in many papers. Probably the most complete description is that of Emmons and Laney.I The rocks of the district are considered to be of Lower Cambrian age and are a part of the Great Smoky formation, consisting mainly of interbedded graywacke and mica schist, in which the ore deposits occur. The ore bodies are included in an area of about 6 sq. miles, 2 miles wide and 3 miles long striking N. 45° E., and may be grouped into three general lode systems. The northeast system, including the East Tennessee, London and Burra Burra ore bodies, and the southeast group, comprising the Polk County, Mary and Calloway deposits, are all characterized by relatively high copper values. The ores of the central system, which includes the Eureka, Boyd, Old Tennessee and Cherokee ore bodies, are low in copper and high in total sulphide content. Boyd mine lies roughly halfway between the Old Tennessee and Eureka ore bodies [ ] and 2500 ft. in the hanging wall of the Burra Burra mine (Fig. 1). While the reducing action of organic matter, of ferrous sulphate, and of hydrogen sulphide has frequently been invoked to account for the deposition of native gold and silver from ore-forming solutions, the high efficiency in this respect of certain of the metallic minerals which form the ore itself has not been suffciently recognized. If a little finely powdered chalcocite is placed in a test-tube arid 2 or 3 cc. of a dilute solution of gold chloride are poured over it, two or three shakes of the tube suffice to remove all the gold from the solution. The color of the solution changes from yellow to pale green, showing that copper is dissolved simultaneously with the precipitation of metallic gold. If a piece of chalcocite is hung in a dilute aqueous solution of silver sulphate (1/40 normal), a coating of silver begins immediately to form on the mineral, and within a few moments a beautiful silver tree has developed, similar to that formed when metallic zinc is immersed in a similar solution. When similar experiments are conducted with other sulphides and with certain arsenides and sulph-arsenides, especially those known to be commonly associated with native silver in ore deposits, it is found that these minerals differ greatly in their efficiency as precipitants, especially in their effect on silver solutions. The tests made with most of the minerals were qualitatipe only, but the reactions of a silver sulphate solution on chalcocite and niccolite were submitted to quantitative study to determine the nature of the reactions involved. ABOUT three years ago, I. L. Dunn, of Marietta, Ohio, found that wells could be cleaned by blowing with compressed air; this method has been used with great success on many wells in the Marietta, Ohio, district, where compressed air is being used to increase production, by forcing oil through the depleted sands. About a year ago, the process was successfully used to clean out wells in the Lenapah pool in Oklahoma, where an air plant had been installed, under the supervision of I. L. Dunn. Wells from 900 to 1000 ft. deep, with 40 ft. of sand and cavings in them, were cleaned out in from two to three days. The use of this process had, so far, been limited to properties using the Smith-Dunn process, where compressed air, under suitable pressure and volume, was available. For other properties, a portable compressor seemed essential; this was built and successfully demonstrated by Mr. Dunn, for the Tidal Oil Co. in September, 1924. The process of cleaning out with air has been described.1 It consists of lowering the tubing into the well, with a shoe or nipple of heavy pipe substituted for the perforated anchor on the bottom. Into the tubing, compressed air is introduced through a rotary swivel hose at the top, or by means of swing connections. The tubing is lowered to the top of the cave to be cleaned out, several barrels of water are put into the hole, and the compressed air is turned on. This blows out the material between the casing and the tubing, the tubing being lowered as the material is removed.
