BLAST furnaces are most efficient thermally when the C02 in the top gas is highest. Oxygen introduced in the air blast is converted to CO in the combustion zones. The extent to which CO, generated in front of the tuyères, is converted later to C02 depends upon the ratio of ore to coke in the charge and the degree to which C02, formed by reduction of iron oxides with CO, reverts to CO by the secondary reaction C + C02 = 2C0. About 300 to 400 lb. of carbon1 per ton of pig iron is normally involved in the solution-loss reaction or direct reduction of FeO with carbon, which produces the same over-all results; that is, lower C02 in the top gas. Riche has recently reported a reduction in fuel consumption at slower rates of blowing on two furnaces in spite of higher heat losses per ton of iron. Lower fuel consumption at slow operating rates was due to more complete reduction of the ore that resulted in higher C02 in the top gas and consequently more efficient use of carbon. Kinney3 has reported substantial savings in fuel as a result of crushing and sizing the ore charge. Improvements in practice brought about by sintering magnetite concentrates, flue dust and fine ores have been due to the establishment of conditions favoring more complete reduction of the ore in the upper part of the furnace. The extent to which oxides and fluctuations in composition in pig iron affect the quality of steel and finished product needs further study. There is evidence that more thorough preheating and reduction of the ore in the upper part of the furnace tend to give a better quality of iron. In the past few years a great deal of preeise information has been obtained about the relation of natural gas to oil production1. The improvement of our understanding has been of great value, both in prolonging the life of wells and in providing a much needed technical background for the legal problem of proration. But there are two principal aspects of the problem of production. It is necessary to consider not only the energy available, in the form of compressed and dissolved gas and in the pressure of driving water, but also the tenacity with which the sandstone holds the oil. The amount of oil that each sand condition will produce under given conditions of gas content should be determined. Hitherto the effect of the sand has been judged by a study of the flow of each well coupled with a procedure for extrapolating the production curve; hut, as is well known to evaluation engineers, such production curves are subject to changes that are not well understood, and often are affected by outside disturbances. On the whole, the concept of "potential production" is vague principally because the influence of the sand in production is not known beyond the simple ideas of porosity and permeability. The permeability is a quantity that has only inference value where mixtures of gas and oil or of gas, oil and water are present. Excellent studies of the production of oil from reservoirs packed with unconsolidatcd sand are available2, but these studies treat largely of small-scale analogzes to a producing field, and the conclusions to be derived from them arc necessarily of a qualitative character because it is not known in what way these miniature oil fields resemble large ones.

Data on worldwide geophysical activity in mining exploration programs is collected annually by the Geophysical Activity Committee of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists as part of a continuing service to the industry. The data is obtained by sending out questionnaires to all organizations (which are) known to be carrying out mining geophysical work; the organizations canvassed include mining companies, contractors, government departments and universities. The questionnaire is divided into three sections, namely ground methods, airborne methods and research. In 1968, 515 questionnaires were circulated throughout the non-Communist world and 283 replies were received which is a 55% return. A 67% return was received from the U. S. organizations surveyed so the statistics quoted in this report for the United States are reasonably reliable. This report is published in condensed form, but with emphasis on the United States statistics, with the permission of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. It was presented at the 39th Annual International Meeting of the SEG in Calgary, Alberta, on September 15, 1969. Worldwide utilization of mining geophysical methods reached a new high in 1968 with total expenditures of United States $41.4 million, compared lo $32.3 million in 1967, representing a 28%, increase. The expenditure distribution by area and type of activity is shown in the graph on page 64. In terms of money spent, ground geophysical surveys accounted for 49% of the total, airborne survey's 36% and research 15%. The percentage of the money spent on ground geophysical surveys fell by approximately 7% from 1967, that for airborne surveys, increased by 5%, and for research the amount increased by 2%. Industry accounted for 79°1% of the total monies spent on mining geophysical activity in the world in 1968 and governments and universities 21 o%.

"AIR-SAND" is the term which has been given to a process of separating refuse material from coal by means of a body of dry sand artificially fluidized and maintained in that condition by a continuous stream of air bubbles flowing through the sand body. By proper regulation of the rate of air flow, this fluid air-sand body may be maintained at such a density that coal will float near the surface and the refuse, which is heavier, will sink through the sand to the bottom of the container. This separation is a float-and-sink operation similar to the separation of wood chips and stones in water; the one floats and the other sinks, irrespective of size of pieces. This was the objective sought in the development of this method of cleaning coal-a dry process which requires no preliminary sizing of the coal. METHOD OF PRODUCING THE AIR-SAND MEDIUM Figure 1 shows the cast-iron cell used for testing at the Central District Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Urbana, Ill. This consisted of two castings: a. rectangular box 12 in. square in cross section and 18 in. tall, open at both ends and flanged on the bottom; and a cubical box also 12 in. square inside, with a closed bottom and flanged top. A porous diaphragm is bolted between the flanged ends of the two castings. The upper part of the cell above the diaphragm is filled with river sand screened through 20 mesh without removing the dust. Air under suitable pressure is admitted to the lower part of the cell below the diaphragm. The air passes through the diaphragm and bubbles up through the sand, distending the mass and throwing the sand particles into motion.

The three basic ingredients of fertilizers are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Nitrogen comes from natural gas or other sources and is usually a "manufactured" ingredient. Phosphorus and potassium come from mineral sources which are mined in open pit and underground mines all over the world. Phosphorus is one of the 15 chemical elements needed to sustain life. Along with nitrogen and potassium, it is essential to the fertility of the soil and to the growth of plant life. Plants require phosphorus for proper soil conditions, early root formation, and crop maturity. Humans and animals require phosphorus for bone and tooth development. The primary raw material for phosphorous fertilizers is phosphate rock. It is found and mined in many areas of the world. Morocco, the United States, USSR, Tunisia, and some Pacific Islands are the leading rock producers. Other sources of phosphate are guano, bone meal, and other natural organics, but these comprise a very small percentage of all phosphate used. Phosphate rock in the United States is mined in Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee, Idaho, and Montana. Florida alone produces about 70% of all the rock mined in this country, mostly from a 20 X 30 mile area in Polk and Hillsborough Counties in central Florida known as the Bone Valley district. There are phosphate reserves in many parts of Florida, and within the past three years mining has begun in north Florida in Hamilton Country (see Fig. 1). In 1967, world phosphate rock production was about 75 million short tons (st). The ore deposit of the Buckhorn Mines Co., Buckhorn, Nev., is peculiar in being a shallow kaolinized mass of material with basalt walls, and having apparently no direct connection with any of the usual gold-bearing rocks. The average ore contains 16 per cent. water of hydration, and the cyaniding of this hydrous clayey material offered unusual difficulties as compared with an average Nevada quartz ore. The orebody was thoroughly developed; then the mill was built according to the latest cyanide practice, with such changes as were thought to be demanded by the peculiar nature of this ore. Upon starting the mill, the ore proved more difficult to handle than had been anticipated. It is hoped that an account of how these difficulties were met may prove of interest to anyone having a clayey ore to handle and to the profession in general. Geology The Buckhorn orebody lies along a north and south fault plane of perhaps 1,000 ft. dislocation, that can be traced for miles; but the only other known mineralization consists of similar ore in the Murphy mine, a mile farther north. The east or hanging wall is hard and smooth, being a typical fault plane. The best ore is along this wall, gradually grading down toward the west until at 30 to 60 ft. it is too low-grade to mine. The country rock on the west consists of alternating layers of hard and soft basalt and basalt scoria, pitching toward the mine. One of these basalt layers on the hillside a little above the mine is marked, for 3 or 4 miles in length, by a line of springs which seep out along it. Perhaps the meeting of the surface drainage, passing down these basalt layers, with the fault-plane solutions explains the formation of the Buckhorn orebody.

Many factors enter into the manufacture of basic open-hearth steel of high quality. Perhaps the two most important are temperature and the iron oxide content of the metal. If we can control these two factors we can essentially control basic open-hearth practice. SOURCE AND EFFECT OF IRON OXIDE Earlier investigators, especially Herty and his associates, have shown that iron oxide is introduced into the open-hearth furnace in four ways:' 1. By oxidation of the scrap by furnace gases. 2. By decomposition of the limestone. 3. By oxidation of the iron oxide in the slag by furnace gases. 4. By direct addition of iron ore to the charge. We also know that the speed of operation of an open-hearth furnace depends, for a given charge and given combustion conditions, on the rate at which iron oxide will diffuse from the slag into the metal. The rate of diffusion depends upon a number of variables, such as iron oxide content of the slag, slag viscosity, etc., which also depend upon the amount of iron oxide in the metal, amount of carbon present, temperature, and so forth. For a given carbon and a given temperature, the iron oxide content of the metal is in proportion to the iron oxide content of the slag. This fact can be easily verified by analysis of slag samples taken as described by Herty.2 It is preferable to take these samples just before deoxidetion. In killing the steel samples with aluminum it is desirable to use aluminum rod of 99 per cent purity; ordinary commercial aluminum rod with a purity of approximately 92 per cent is not satisfactory. In drilling these samples it is also essential to take the largest amount of drillings possible. This gives more accurate results because it eliminates spotty segregation of A12O3.

Viewed from the standpoint of an economist, the task which faces the petroleum producing industry is one of intelligent adjustment so that technology can perform the job of efficient exploitation, while at the same time the interests of producers and consumers remain adequately protected. The crux in the task of making this adjustment lies in the difficulty of arranging the instrumentalities of production to accord with the physical characteristics of oil. For example, oil is exploited under a competitive economic system based on private ownership and contract, with the hope that profits will attract capital and enterprise, and with competition supposedly acting as the regulative factor. Whether such a scheme of industrial organization works is partially dependent upon the ability of the producer to withold or produce his commodity as he sees fit, in accordance with market demand. But in the oil industry, the enterpriser does not have complete control over the expansion and contraction of production, for, because of the decisions of the courts that ownership in oil depends upon its possession, desire for immediate output becomes the controlling force in production. Consequently, the theoretical commands and restraints of free enterprise are not operative because there is no security of property, and the result is loss due to the following economic maladjustments: (1) Production not completely responsive to price control. (2) Production at excessive cost. (3) Loss of oil, a highly exhaustible natural resource. If economic maladjustments are to be eliminated, there should be a change in the organization of production so as to provide efficient exploitation of the oil and at the same time to insure individual property interests. The latter is necessary if economic considerations are to become primary factors in regulating production. To attain these ends, the entire pool should be developed as one big engineering project and some scheme

(con~munication to the Secretary*):—It is not in a spirit of criticism that I offer a supplemental suggestion or two on the subjects covered by this valuable and highly instructive memoir. There are two points which, in my opinion, should have received greater emphasis in Mr. Emmons's excellent paper. One is the fundamental r6le played by the chlorides under certain conditions in ore-formation. The other is the possible establishment of geographic relationships among the four pheilomena of (1) excessive chlo-ridic content of mine-waters; (2) the abundance of chloridic compounds of the precious metals; (3) the presence of man-gancse oxides; and (4) the diminishing importance, in ore-genesis, of the metallic sulphates. Although Mr. Emmons's notes refer to gold alone, it may be pertinently asked whether the same principles do not hold good for silver and copper also, since these metals form, together with gold, a distinct and well-known chemical group. That the reactions involved apply equally well to the other two metals mentioned, is sbown by a number of recent observations and discussions. Chloridic ores of silver are, as I have lately endeavored to show, mainly worked in arid or desert regions only; and the great deposits of disseminated copper-ores are similarly characteristic of such regions, in which both classes doubtless owe their formation to the abundance of saline materials derived from desert dusts, and to the plentiful and almost universal presence of manganese oxide. Under these climatic conditions, silver is somewhat more abundantly deposited than copper and gold, because its chloride is so much less soluble. A series of studies of the corrosion of tin is under way in the Metals Research Laboratory at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. The complete program includes examination of the corrosion properties of high-purity tin and the changes produced in these properties by the addition of varying amounts of alloying elements. Other studies of this subject have been made recently under the sponsorship of the International Tin Research and Development Council, but these researches have been confined largely to the weakly acid environments commonly encountered in the canning industry.' There is little information available regarding the corrosion of tin under alkaline conditions, but such data would be of value, for a large amount of the metal is used under such conditions. The potential measurements to be described were made because they seemed to offer the most rapid method for obtaining a general view of the conditions to be encountered in such service. These experiments will also serve to establish a technique that will be of value in further studies. It must be emphasized that the results reported are those of controlled laboratory experiments and that the conclusions drawn cannot yet be applied to service conditions; rather, they point to the directions in which more exhaustive experimental work may be done to best advantage. Experimental Procedure The first work was devoted entirely to the problem of obtaining reproducible results from a series of potential measurements. Only the methods finally adopted as standard will be described here, except when the variations from these have furnished results of interest. The cell used is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The production of sand in an oil well increases operating costs because of abnormal wear in subsurface equipment, the necessity for frequent cleanouts, and the need for a means of disposing of the sand. Moreover, removal of sand from the zone can bring about the creation of cavities from which bodies of formation, sand or shale, may slough into the hole, endangering the shutoff, impeding production or collapsing the liner. The procedure known as gravel packing is attracting attention as a means of controlling these factors and contributing to the productive life of a well. That gravel packing is now substantially beyond the preliminary stage on the Pacific Coast is reflected in the 191,000 bbl. of oil produced monthly by the 66 gravel-packed wells in 11 different producing sectors. Reasons fob Gravel Packing Gravel packing, if properly carried out, can be expected to provide the following benefits: 1. Prevent the movement of sand and thus eliminate sand production and sand fills, and prevent the formation of cavities. 2. Provide a practical, relatively inexpensive, large-diameter hole, which will provide well-known theoretical advantages. 3. Support the walls of the hole by completely filling the space between the liner and the formation, regardless of its irregularities, and afford a support for liners. 4. Provide for more efficient pumping operations in wells by: (a) possibly utilizing the gravel as a gas trap in pumping gaseous fluids, (b) allowing deep submergence of the pump into the oil zone. In a conventional well—that is, where the liner is set in an open hole-. even though perforation sizes are chosen according to known rules based on analysis of sand grains from samples from the zone, there is likely to be some production of sand. The scaling characteristics of three Fe-Cr alloys have been investigated by determining their weight gain vs. time curves at 1600° to 2000° F. The scales formed thereby have been examined using the techniques of X-ray diffraction and spectrographic and metal-lographic analyses in an attempt to explain the discontinuities in the curves and to elucidate the mechanism of scaling. DESPITE the considerable number of investigations that have been carried out on heat resistant alloys, the characteristics of the scales formed at high temperatures are not fully known. The research reported here was undertaken in an attempt to ascertain the mechanism of scaling of the stainless steels. Scaling experiments were carried out first, the weight increase of the specimens being followed continuously with time. It was observed that, as well as showing the expected decrease in oxidation rate with time, the oxidation curves showed breaks corresponding to intermediate periods of accelerated oxidation, after which protectiveness again increased. This phenomenon was observed with austenitic stainless steels (types 302, 309, and 330) and with Fe-Cr alloys (types 410, 430, and 446), but only the latter are treated in this report. An examination of the scales was made using the techniques of X-ray diffraction and spectrographic and metallographic analyses in an attempt to obtain a correlation between the nature of the scales and the oxidation curves. A search through the literature revealed only a very few previous reports of such periods of accelerated oxidation. Dunn' found breaks in the oxidation-time curves of some Cu-Si alloys but saw no rational explanation of the phenomenon. Heindlhofer and Larsen2 attributed a discontinuity in the weight gain-time curve of iron at 1290°F to the formation of blisters, the subsequent cracking of which exposed an unprotected surface and permitted rapid oxidation until a new protective scale had been reestablished. They advanced no explanation, however, for what they termed the peculiar behavior of a 27 pct Fe-Cr alloy at 2000°F which gained weight very rapidly in between two periods of very slow weight gain. Portevin, Pretet, and Jolivet3 in describing breaks in the weight gain-time curves of Fe-A1 alloys suggested that they might be associated with the occurrence of localized and deeply oxidized areas on the specimens. Bandel4 in a general discussion of oxidation curves of heat resistant alloys considered that the discontinuities were due to a local disruption of the protective layer by the growth of iron-rich oxides. Day and Smith" in their report on the scaling of a large number of iron alloys noted but did not explain occasional relatively rapid changes in oxidation rate at higher temperatures. Chevenard and Wache6 found breaks, often two per specimen, in the oxidation curves of an 18-8 type alloy. They suggested that the cause might be a depletion in chromium of the surface layer of metal due to its selective oxidation, the resultant high concentration of iron and nickel in the scale leading to a poorly protective scale. McCullough, Fontana, and Beck' explained the breaks in the oxidation curves of types 304, 430, and 410 alloys as due to mechanical ruptures. Experimental Work Table I lists the chemical compositions of the materials used. Cylindrical specimens 1/4 in. in diam and 11/2 in. long were machined from cold rolled % in. rod. After a fine finish cut with a sharp tool, the specimens were abraded while still mounted on the lathe with Nos. 2, 1, 0, and 00 metallographic grade emery papers. A 3/64 in. hole was drilled at a distance of 1/8 in. from one end to permit suspension in the furnace. Specimen Nos. 1, 2, and 3 were tested with this surface preparation. All others, after being similarly prepared, were electropolished in a perchloric-acetic electrolyte, electrical contact being made by pressing a tapered platinum hook into the drilled hole. The specimens were then washed in hot water, rinsed with distilled water, rinsed with methanol, dried at 120°F, and weighed. Thereafter,

The use of alkyl acid phosphates and their alkali salts as collectors for the uranium minerals brannerite and uranothorite was investigated. In particular a detailed flotation study was carried out using isooctyl acid phosphate as a promoter. Tests were conducted on an Elliot Lake ore analyzing 0.11% U 3 O 8, chiefly as brannerite, and approximately 9% pyrite. Pyrite was floated with conventional reagents; the flotation of brannerite from the sulfide tails was studied to determine the optimum pH and pulp density to employ with isooctyl phosphate. 4 uranium recovery of over 90% was possible with a selectivity index of 8.95 when these tails were floated at 17% solids and a pH of 1.7. The effect of various modifying agents was also investigated. Aluminum sulfate, lactic acid and sodium silicate improved the selectivity of collection yielding selectivity indices of 9.5 to 11.5. Ferric chloride was found to be a depressant for brannerite. A Bancroft ore which analyzed 0.13% U308, and contained uranothorite was also amenable to flotation using isooctyl acid phosphate. The composite uranium concentrate obtained assayed 0.41% U308 at a recovery of 95.3% and a ratio of concentration of 3.24. Previous investigations1,2 on the flotation of brannerite, pitchblende, uraninite and/or uranothorite from various Canadian ores showed that fatty acids, including oleic acid and tall oils, petroleum sulfo-nates and alkyl acid phosphates, were suitable collectors for these uranium minerals. Additional work carried out by the Mines Branch in Ottawa on brannerite ores from the Elliot Lake area3 used the tall oil Acintol FA-1, or FA-2, as a collector. A recovery of 92% of the uranium in a concentrate which contained about 55% of the weight and assayed 0.2% U3O8 was obtained from a feed of 0.1% U308 in this latter instance. Eigeles et a1.4 carried out flotation on pitchblende ores and found that the most promising results were obtained with alkyl acid phosphates and their alkali salts as collectors. Within the homologous series of alkyl phosphates, the best flotation characteristics were displayed by isooctyl phosphates. Further, isooctyl phosphate derivatives were much less sensitive to hardness forming salts than oleic acid, enabling all flotation tests to be made with tap water. This paper describes tests employing alkyl acid phosphates for the flotation of ores containing brannerite and uranothorite. The flotation work described herein was conducted in conjunction with the development of a leaching process for Elliot Lake, Ontario, brannerite ores. In this process pyrite in the ore was concentrated by flotation and roasted, providing sulfur dioxide which was used to produce sulfuric acid in situ in a liquid-solid extraction process. A 40% conversion to sulfuric acid was indicated at a leaching temperature of 80°C; this resulted in the extraction of 93% of the total uranium after a contact period of 6 hr. A rotary kiln was used as a leaching vessel. Preconcentration by flotation was studied in conjunction with the above process to reduce the bulk of solids for leaching and, consequently, capital expenditure. The materials and methods used in this study will be described initially. Then the results will be presented in two sections, the first dealing with the brannerite ore, and the second with the uranothorite. Finally an economic analysis of the results on the brannerite material will be made. MATERIALS AND METHODS The two ore samples examined were from uranium-producing mines. One was a brannerite ore, a uraniferous quartz pebble conglomerate from the Elliot Lake area, which contained 0.11% U3O8, 4.3% S and 4.5% total Fe. Mineralogical studies of similar samples indicated the presence of quartz, microcline, sericite, pyrite and minor quantities of rutile, pyrrho-tite and zircon. The other ore was from a biotite-rich pegmatite in the Bancroft area; feldspar, quartz and biotite formed the major gangue components. Falls of roof account for over 50% of the fatalities that occur in coal mines in the US. Thus, roof control is one of the more important phases of underground mining. In reality, the control of roof influences the system of mining and is a major determinant of the width and spacing of working places, operations at the mining face, ventilation control, and surface subsidence. Frequently, the control of roof is the largest single cost item. Roof control is a never-ending task, not only at the working face and throughout sections where men are working, but along haulways and air- ways that must be maintained for the life of the mine. This is because roof, even the best of roof, slowly deteriorates, so it must be frequently examined, with corrective support applied when needed. As coal is excavated, stresses are set up in the roof because the previous equilibrium is upset, resulting in pressures that cause fractures and slight movements that are frequently hard to detect. Unless the immediate roof, in the excavated area, is given support by artificial means, it might fall or there might be a succession of falls, varying from a thin scale to several feet, depending on the nature of the top. Exceptions to this are those rare mines, or sections of mines, with hard, strong, nonweathering roof that requires no support. GENERAL CLASSIFICATION OF ROOF There are two broad types of roof as far as support is concerned: the immediate roof above the coal and the main roof. Artificial support for mining purposes is only concerned with the immediate roof as nothing except large blocks of solid coal, or massive concrete, will support the main roof. The immediate roof is generally a few feet thick but can vary from inches to 6.1 m (20 ft) or more. The two most widely used methods of measuring hardness are the Brinell and the scleroscope. In the Brinell method a hardened steel ball is pressed into the steel under a definite load and the area of the resulting depression is measured. The load in kg. per sq. mm. of the area of the depression is taken as a measure of the hardness. Within certain limits the hardness number so determined is independent of the load or the size of the ball. In the scleroscope method a small weight carrying a diamond point is dropped through a glass tube upon the steel and the amount of rebound is taken as proportional to the hard-' ness. In both methods the scale of hardness is an arbitrary one; however, they agree in a comparative may, that is, a steel showing 50 per cent. increase in hardness by the Brinell test mill show approximately 50 per cent. increase in hardness by the scleroscope test. Yet upon consideration of the two methods it appears that, upon a steel which has been carbonized, this should not be the case ; for the scleroscope method gives almost exclusively the surface-hardness, and the condition of the material below the surface has but a slight bearing upon the hardness number. The results given by the Brinell method should, however, be the exact opposite; for the depth of penetration 'of a ball pressed into the steel would be dependent to a large extent upon the condition of the material below the surface. This is particularly obvious when it is considered that the size of the ball ordinarily used in the Brinell method is 1 cm. (about 8 in.) in diameter under a load of 3,000 kg., while the diamond point of the scleroscope is in the neighborhood of 0.01 in. across, fitted in a hammer of about 0.5 oz. weight and dropping from a height of 10 inches.
