ON p. 499 of the December issue Of MINING AND METAL-LURGY plans were announced for a memorial to en-gineers who died in overseas service during the World War and a gift to the University of Louvain on behalf of the engineers of America. In this connection it is proposed to erect a memorial tablet giving the names. of engineers who died in the foreign service. Members of the A. I. M. E. who gave their lives, so far as they are known, are listed below. It will be much appreciated if notice be given of any omissions and also if the name of some surviving relative be supplied in each case. Discussion of the paper of Frederic P. Dewey, presented at the Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912, and printed in Bulletin -No. 70, October, 1912, pp. 1075 to 1101. EDWARD KELLER, Perth Amboy, N. J. (communication to the Secretary *) :-Mr. Dewey, in his paper, offers a liberal addition of new data to those already to be found in the technical literature on this subject. However, now as before, the work issuing from the U. S. mints and assay-offices conveys the impression that systematic sampling in those institutions is more or less a secondary consideration, the chief attention being given to the principle of producing approximately homogeneous bars; recourse being taken to remelting or refining the bullion. This practice has been definitely rejected in the realm of copper-bullion sampling, for the reason that in such operations there are always unaccounted losses. Does not the same objection hold true for gold-bullions; although, perhaps,in a lesser degree ? Differences of opinion would seem justified on the following statements made by Mr. Dewey: 1. "Only two classes of alloys can form homogeneous bars-those that are solid solutions, and the eutectics."

In this year's review, the concept of solution mining has been expanded to include total solution as well as the technology of leaching, or partial solution methods. Leaching methods continue to make strides in the processing of metallic minerals, particularly in copper and uranium production. No quantitative data are available on the increase of leach operations; however, it is known that there were more systems installed in 1969 and that the estimated 15% of U.S. domestic production of copper produced in 1968 was by leach methods.1 While the number of publications appearing during the year were few,2,3 there were special sessions in this field at the AIME Annual Meeting and SME Fall Meeting in 1969 and more scheduled for these meetings in 1970. Significant areas that should be mentioned are: the continuing interest in bacteria to convert sulfide sulfur to acid thus reducing reagent costs in both copper and uranium sulfide ores, the exploration of leaching agents other than common mineral acids or alkaline solutions,4,5 kinetic studies of leach mechanisms and the development of microfractures for increased leach solution penetration by use of chemical or atomic explosives.6,7

The Toquepala concentrator of the Southern Peru Copper Corp., located approximately 720 miles southeast of Lima near the Chilean border, processes 36,500 tons of ore daily containing between 0.50% and 3.00% copper. The molybdenite content in the ore also varies greatly, ranging from essentially nothing to as high as 0.15%. The 1966 yearly averages were approximately 1.20% copper and 0.03 % molybdenite. The three basic problems that plague the opera- tion of any molybdenite recovery plant are all present at Toquepala in large measures. Both the quantity of plant feed and the quantity of molybdenite contained in the plant feed are continuously changing. Even more detrimental to an efficient operation is the fact that the copper mineralization in the feed frequently changes once in every 24 hours and occasionally once a shift. From the point of view of the molybdenite plant metallurgist, there are four distinctive chalcopyrite concentrates and, at least, an equal number of chalcocite concentrates treated in the molybdenite recovery circuit. The various types of concentrates are distinguished mainly by their mineral content and how effectively the copper minerals are depressed by the different reagents used in the circuit.

Much work has been done recently on the lead-antimony system1 in connection with lead-rich alloys of commercial importance containing less than 20 per cent. antimony. Dean, Zickrick and Nix have called attention to the perpetuation in the literature of several erroneous data, such as a eutectic temperature of 228° C. at 12.5 per cent. antimony, instead of 247° at 13 per cent. The series is given as a classic example of a straight eutectiferous series in such late books as those of Heyn and Grossmann, 2 Jeffries and Archer,3 Guillet and Portevin,4 Pulsifer,5 Rosenhain,6 and Liddell,' as well as the somewhat earlier works of Hof-man (1918), Wang (1909), and Williams (1920). The work of Dean has definitely shown a solid solution of antimony in lead at about 2.5 per cent. antimony. While lecturing to a class in general metallurgy at the University of Idaho, the writer had the students prepare a series of lead-antimony alloys for the purpose of illustrating methods of thermal analysis. FROM indirect evidence point defects have been believed to influence the fatigue behavior of metals and alloys.1,2 Measurements of changes in resistivity made after cyclicstressing at low temperatures indicate that a very high density of defects is present, part of which may be removed by room-temperature annealing.3'4 These results are consistent with the generation of a high number of point defects at low temperatures. Corresponding measurements made after room-temperature stressing did not show any recovery effects.3 This was attributed to a stabilization of the dislocation network after a few thousand cycles without generation of vacancies. In this laboratory resistance measurements of copper single crystals, shaped as normal fatigue specimens ,5 have been made with a Kelvin double bridge at room temperature during and after cyclic stressing at 80 cps by comparing with a dummy at a close and constant temperature. Temperature differences were measured to ±0.025°C with fine thermocouples taped onto the gage lengths. Potential leads were tin-soldered into small holes in the gage length to give stable values. Corrections for differences in temperature and changes in mean length of the specimen were made according to the formula:

As a result of studies distributed over the earth- including ocean basins as well as continents- some tectonists recognize four dominant structural trends: 1) northwest; 2) northeast; 3) nearly east- west, or equatorial; and 4) nearly north-south, or meridional. Baker' proposed a theory to account for these trends and Sonder5 called their world-wide arrangement the regmatic shear pattern. Moody and Hill6 proposed a much more complicated shear network which, although fascinating and perhaps ultimately useful, will not be followed here. In a recent review of deformation within the Cordillera, Wisser7 mentioned the four fundamental directions. The fact that many geologists deny the existence of the regmatic shear pattern implies that the fundamental structures are far from obvious. It may mean, also, that some geologists are not accustomed to examine regional and world maps analytically. The maps require much study, and certain features, should be isolated on overlays. Even so, with the present limited knowledge, uncertainties remain. The following analysis is a qualitative experiment, subject to change as information accumulates, and should be supplemented by the western sheet of the Tectonic Map of the United States.8

Carbon which is present as insoluble carbides in austenitic stainless steels can be measured quantitatively by dissolving the steel in iodine-methanol and analyzing the residue for carbon. Severe sen-sitization was observed in Type 302 due to precipitation of only 0.003 pet carbon. Both cold work and the presence of delta ferrite caused a marked acceleration in rate of carbide precipitation. Carbide precipitation rates in 17-7 PH were stzulied for the austenite conditioning and also the aging heat treatment. CARBON and its compounds exercise a major influence on the properties of stainless steels and their response to thermal treatment. Sensitization in 18-8 type stainless steels has been the subject of numerous investigations throughout the years. Bain, Aborn, and utherford," and Binder, Brown, Frankss all studied the effects of heating austenitic stainless steels in the temperature range of 1000° to 1500°F. The primary purpose of most of these studies was the investigation of susceptibility to in-tergranular attack in acids due to these sensitizing heat treatments. Intergranular precipitation of carbides was always associated with intergranular attack but it was recognized2 that severe attack could occur with but minute quantities of precipitated carbide. Mahla and ielsen utilized the electron microscope to make a significant contribution in illustrating the appearance and method of growth of chromium carbides during sensitizing heat treatments. However, as they stated, their studies of residues could not be used to obtain a quantitative measurement of the amount of carbon which was actually precipitated. The aim of the present investigation was to devise a relatively fast, simple method for the quantitative measurement of carbides in stainless steel. EXPERIMENTAL WORK The initial investigations were made to determine the best means of separating carbides from the matrix. A number of dissolving media were tried using both chemical and electrolytic attack. Qualitative examination of the extracted residues by X-ray diffraction indicated that solution in iodine-methanol would furnish a good means of separation. Consequently, further work was pursued along this line. The method is quite simple. The sample in the form of millings or nibblings is dissolved in iodine-methanol solution at room temperature (6-g iodine, 25-ml methanol per g of sample). The insoluble residue containing the carbides is separated by suction filtration through an ultra-fine glass filter disc. This is a very fine filter medium that will retain particles as small as 0.1 to 0.2 p in diameter. After washing with methanol and drying, the filter disc and residue are placed in a conventional combustion carbon-tube furnace and the carbon determined gravimetrically. Using this technique it was found that reproducible insoluble carbon values were obtained. However, since such small amounts of insoluble carbon were obtained on Type 302 after sensitizatipn at 1250°F and 1500°F, the values were confirmed by a second method. In the second method the sample was dissolved with copper potassium chloride and filtered through a millipore paper. This treatment dissolves the matrix but leaves undissolved practically all of the carbon irrespective of how it is present in the steel. The amount of insoluble carbon present as chromium carbide is determined by calculation from the analysis of the residue for chromium and iron. The derivation of the formula used for this calculation is discussed later. The values obtained by the indirect copper-potassium-chloride method were in agreement with those obtained by the iodine-methano1 method. See Table I. It should be pointed out that the sensitivity of the direct combustion method is not too high when the amount of carbide present is small. This is due primarily to inherent blanks and to analytical errors such as weighing. For this reason it cannot be stated with any degree of certainty that there is a significant difference between values of 0.002 and 0.005 pct. Having confirmed that the iodine-methanol extraction gave a quantitative measurement of the precipitated carbides in Type 302, exploratory tests were conducted on Armco 17-7 PH stainless steel. Samples from commercial Heat 54807 were solution annealed at 2000°F, water quenched and heated at 1250" and 1500°F, and water quenched. The analysis of Heat 54808 is as follows:

As a preliminary, consicleration is given to the conventional definition of relative permeability and to the conditions governing the simultaneous flow of oil and gas through porous media. For the conditions of flow prevailing throughout most of a gas drive reservoir, the oil and gas can reasonably be supposed to be in capillary equilibrium with each other. Under these conditions, and these conditions only, the relative permeability to liquid can be expressed as a function of saturation. The relative permeability to liquid in that case is dependent upon the distribution of fluids which itself is shown to be related to the capillary pressure, and, in turn, to the saturation. As a consequence, relative permeability to liquid can be expressed in terms of the volume and surface area of a network of liquid channels bounded by the rock and the gas phase. While the volume of this network can be evaluated accurately, the surface area cannot. However, for any such volume, maximum and minimum values of the corresponding surface area can be calculated from capillary pressure data. It is then possible to establish for any saturation the limits within which the value of the relative permeability to liquid must lie. As a consequence of the theoretical development, the validity of an experimental method for measuring relative permeability to liquid which utilizes a stationary gas phase is demonstrated. In this method capillary barriers are cemented to the ends of the core sample to permit the maintenance of capillary equilibrium between the two phases. At the same time, this procedure eliminates undesirable secondary phenomena such as end effects, fissure effects, etc., the presence of which adversely affect the results of other laboratory methods. The results obtained by theoretical calculations, and experimentally, are discussed. In view of the overall precision that can presently be obtained in reservoir calculations, the agreement between the calculated and measured relative permeability to liquid data can be considered satisfactory. In conclusion, for reasons of economy and simplicity, the procedure of calculating limiting relative permeability to liquid curves from capillary pressure data is indicated for general engineering purposes. It is shown that the above procedure can easily be extended to the cases where connate water is present. Its use for reservoir studies is particularly recommended in conjunction with the method for measuring relative permeability to gas' which simultaneously yields the capillary pressure data necessary for the calculations. In order to obtain a convenient basis of comparison, the effective permeabilities are referred to the specific permeability, k, of the considered porous medium, with the help of the relations: k1. = KI. k kQ = Kn k..........(2) K,. and Kr. are defined as the relative permeabilities to the liquid and to the gas phase respectively, and frequently expressed in per cent of specific permeability. It may be seen that Equations (1); which appear to be a direct generalization of Darcy's law, correspond to the assignment at any given time of a set of "local" permeabilities to each point of the porous medium, and represent in a differential form the two fluid flow system as a simple superposition of the individual single flow systems. INTRODUCTION Direct reduction processes reduce the various commercial forms of iron oxide (pellets, concentrate, fines, etc.) to metallic iron at temperatures lower than that of molten iron. Thus, this technology includes practically, all iron reduction processes other than blast furnaces and electric pig iron furnaces (whose output in terms of world production is negligible). The product of these processes which is known as direct reduced iron (DRI), or sponge iron, is primarily used as a source of metallic iron in steel-making operations. Interest in DRI, which has been significant since the early 1960s, increased significantly in recent years with the rapid growth of DRI installed capacity throughout the world. The importance of the subject for the Circum-Pacific region stems directly from the influence that DRI has on iron ore consumption and on future steel development for this region. Although there is widespread agreement that electric furnaces will continue to increase their share of global steel output, and especially so in the countries of the Pacific Steel community, some doubts exist about future scrap supplies being adequate to support growth at past rates. The authors believe that such doubts are soundly based. As this paper points out, the total supply of all metallics used in electric furnaces may not be adequate to support the extrapolated rapid growth in electric furnace steel production. This paper seeks to provide perspective on the global and Circum-Pacific prospects for DRI in light of recent energy price developments and the current recession. In this regard, the demand for DRI within the context of recent evolutionary patterns in steel-making, the outlook of DRI supply in terms of prevailing production costs, and the prospects of new technology are discussed. THE DEMAND FOR DRI Although several reports published in the last 10 years predict high rates of growth in DRI, the subject remains a controversial one. Significant growth has indeed occurred, but not to the extent anticipated in the studies summarized in Table 1. The substantial difference between previous expectations and present reality can be ascribed primarily to: (1) lower growth in steel production than formerly anticipated; (2) numerous cancellations of DRI facilities that were previously announced; and (3) a fundamental and probably irreversible change in the economics of DRI production. Note that DRI capacity at the end of 1980 was about 16 million tonnes, a significantly lower figure than any of the projections above. In addition, DRI production was only about half of capacity, reflecting the abnormally low rates of capacity utilization in this industry. [ ] Before examining the current outlook in steel, it is pertinent to note that the market for DRI is usually different in the industrialized countries of the West from that in developing countries. In the former, the available infrastructure and industry's diversification extends DRI's potential markets to numerous steelmaking, foundry, and other industrial applications, although competition from scrap and other forms of metallic iron is constant. Scrap is generally available in these countries and, therefore, DRI competes with it in electric furnace steelmaking, basic oxygen steelmaking (as a coolant), cupola foundry operations, or as an additive in the metallic charge for open hearth and blast furnaces. On the other hand, DRI in developing countries is often allocated exclusively to domestic electric furnace steelmaking or, when capacity exceeds domestic captive requirements, to export. Notwithstanding quality considerations, DRI is being and is likely to continue to be used predominantly as a source of metallics in iron and steel-making. Other uses of DRI, such as in copper cementation represent a marginal market in terms of overall tonnage and can be ignored at this point. Therefore, DRI demand is-determined by the overall availability of metallic scrap in its various forms--a function of steel production and its probable evolution. The Global Steel Outlook Given the present recession, an objective appraisal of the long-term outlook for steel is particularly difficult. On the one hand, historical trends and, especially, the inertial forces associated with such a basic industry as steel must be recognized; such trends suggest that the current stagnation with

The wzodel of Blandin and Diplunt;, generalized to include a phase factor, is applied to the carbon-carbon interaction in iron. Darken&apos;s "energetic" model is generalized to include not only first neighbor interactions but further neighbor interactions as well. On the bases of these generalized models relations are derived for the activity of carbon in both austenite and ferrite in terms of the carbon-carbon Pair interaction energies. A single function then yields the pair interaction energies consistent with the experimental activities of carbon in both ferrite and austenite. Thus, a simple explanation is given for the observation that the nearest-neighbor interaction between carbon is repulsive in austenite and attractive in ferrite. Certain consequences of this approach are explored. OnE object of the present paper is to attempt to take into account the consequences of electrostatic contributions to the carbon-carbon pair interaction energy for carbon as a solute in iron. Friedel&apos; has shown that oscillations in electrostatic potential are to be expected about a solute atom in a metallic solution. Blandin and 6lant6&apos; have shown that such oscillations yield an interaction energy between pairs of solute atoms that obeys the relation: W{ = A cos(2ftFri + 4>)/(kFri)3 [l] where kF = Fermi wave vector, ri = distance between solute atoms comprising the pair7 <p = phase factor dependent only on electronic nature of solute and solvent, A = coefficient dependent only on electronic nature of solute and solvent. Machlin3 found that Eq. [I] accurately described the pair interaction energy derived from short-range order measurements based on field ion microscope observations of dilute alloys of platinum. He also found that the value of the phase factor $ derived from residual resistivity measurements agreed well with that obtained from the analysis of the short-range order data. Harrison and paskin4 were able to predict the long-range ordering energy of 0 brass using Relation [I] and residual resistivity values to predict the value of the phase factor $. Machlin5 has repeated their analysis and applied it to the prediction of the long-range ordering energy in AgZn and AgCd with excellent agreement between prediction and experiment. Both A and $ are independent of the crystal structure. The Fermi wave vector depends uniquely upon the conduction electron concentration per unit volume in the spherical approximation of the Fermi surface. Thus, Eq. [I] is expected to apply to both fer- rite and austenite with only one set of values of A and $. Mossbauer studies6 yield the result that iron has one 4s electron. We shall make an assumption found to hold previously for platinum3&apos;7 and nikel, which is that only the s electrons are involved in shielding the perturbing potential of carbon. With this assumption, kF = 1.35 A-l. Although A and $ may be obtained from certain mdels&apos;&apos;&apos; we shall take A and $ to be empirical constants in the spirit of Kohn and osko.&apos; Thus, Eq. [I] involves two adjustible parameters. Consequently, two independent relations in A and $I are required in order to evaluate them for carbon as a solute in iron. We may use a recent analysis of Aaronson, Domain, and poundg who showed that Darken&apos;s energetic model,1° as well as others, can be used to describe the activity-temperature data for carbon in iron in both the aus-tenitic and ferritic phases. Darken&apos;s model takes into account only first neighbor pair interactions. For our needs, all neighbor pairs need to be taken into account. It is convenient to generalize Darken&apos;s model. An automatic control method for the ferrosilicon heavy media process maintains media density within 0.01 specific gravity points. Continued demands for higher grade, competitive products from the Mesabi Range have resulted in experimental work such as that detailed for one concentrator. Various methods, step by step procedures and instruments used at an iron ore beneficiation plant in the development of an automatic control system are described. Work continues and it is hoped that further applications of control instrumentation can be made in the next operating season. The need for instrumentation and automatic control of the various parameters in the heavy media process of iron ore beneficiation has been apparent for some time. Continued demands for higher grade, competitive products from the Mesabi Range have made it necessary to increase the efficiency of the process in every possible way. In a typical heavy media flow scheme for iron ore beneficiation (Fig. 1) a sized, prepared feed (generally about —1% in. to +% in.) is fed to a heavy media separatory vessel, along with a ferrosilicon slurry. A separation of the feed is made on the basis of specific gravity. Low density particles overflow a tailings discharge weir, while high density ore particles sink to the bottom of the high density pool and are moved away to the concentrate discharge chute. Both products are passed over drainage screens and then are cleaned thoroughly of attached ferrosilicon on wash screens. Float material is generally stockpiled, while the sink product is shipped as a final concentrate. Undersize from the drain screens is returned directly to the circulating media sump. Wash screen undersize is cleaned of contaminating ore particles and slimes by passing through magnetic separators. Provision is also made for splitting a portion of the tailings drain undersize into the cleaning circuit if necessary for control of depth of tailings overflow, or for additional cleaning as required. Cleaned ferrosilicon is stored in a densifier and returned to the Circulating media sump as make-up material. Dilution water is also added to this sump to maintain a desired specific gravity of the circulating media. As in any process, operational intelligence is secured only by keeping records of the process variables. Generally apeaking, plant operators have neither the inclination nor the time to keep complete and detailed records of these variables over the course of their shift. Before instrumentation was added to aid the operator, specific gravity was measured by weighing a given volume of pulp at intervals of from 30 to 60 min. Scale readings were made at the beginning and end of each shift. No records were kept of operating conditions, such as rpm of the separatory ves-sel, media level in the machine, tons per hour of the products, and so forth. These items were recorded only when spot checks were made by the metallurgical staff. CONTlNlJOUS DENSITY RECORDING The first process instrument used, other than the usual ammeter on the drive motor of the separatory vessel, was a nuclear density gauge and its associated circular chart recorder. These instruments were used to indicate and record specific gravity of the circulating media. This was a tremendous aid to the operator in that tie was able to observe and correct the specific gravity at any time. There was also added incentive to make frequent corrections because of the permanent record made by the recorder of the densities. The addition of the nuclear density gauge was influential in securing optimum quality and recovery of the heavy media product. Manual control was improved, and it became possible for a good operator to main control within f.05 specific gravity units. This compares with an unknown quantity, estimated at f0.15 gravity units, when manual measurement and control was used. An example of the improvement in manual control over the course of one season&apos;s operations is shown in Fig. 2. Chart A is typical of the records made shortly after the gauge was installed. S. F. Emmons, Washington, D. C.: Mr. Malcolmson&apos;s paper on the intensely interesting deposits of the Sierra Mojada creates a strong desire to visit the region so well described. Although it is difficult to intelligently discuss a locality that one has never seen, I cannot refrain from offering some remarks in the nature of a tentative suggestion: 1. Age of Beds.—Mr. Malcolmson speaks of the enormous thickness of limestone forming the Sierra Mojada as belonging to the Carboniferous series. If this is not a typographical error, it seems that he should present some evidence for such age, for Chism,* in his previous article on the district, says the only fossils found there were said to be Cretaceous; and it is well known by the investigations of R. T. Hill and others that the great thickness of limestone in this part of Mexico is of Cretaceous age. 2. Structure of Mountains.—Mr. Malcolmson presents good reasons for thinking that the structure of the two related mountain masses (Sierra Mojada and Sierra Planchada) is not the simple anticlinal fold given by Mr. Chism&apos;s section, it being evident that there has been faulting as well as flexure. I venture to add that the facts presented by Mr. Malcolmson seem to suggest the possibility that, instead of being simply an eroded anticline, the valley between the two ranges may have been formed, in part at least, by the irregular faulting down of the intermediate block, on the surface of which the volcanic breccia had originally accumulated at a higher level. The sections of the Exploradora and the San Josh mines, in the smooth surface of the contact, with clay selvages and the occasional slickensides, certainly suggest a structural fault between the limestone and breccia. Discussion of the paper of L. C. Graton and Joseph Murdoch, presented at the New York Meeting, February, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 77, May, 1913, pp. 741 to 797. THOMAS T. READ, New York, N. (communication to the Secretary *) :-At the meetings of English technical societies it not infrequently happens that, during the discussion of a paper, someone will arise to say that although he highly appreciated the material presented, nevertheless he believed it would have been better if some other phase of the question had been more highly emphasized. Assuming that this form of discussion is permissible in the Institute, I should like to reiterate the point made by Prof. A. J. Moses that conclusive proof of the identity of the minerals in question is an essential feature of the study of ores in this way. This is also expressed by Paul Krusch in his recent valuable paper 1 on the sulphide ores (in which he arrives at conclusions diametrically opposed to those of Mr. Graton), as follows : ?The diagnostic properties of the various ore minerals are known to but a limited circle of investigators." Many earlier investigators began the study of ores beneath the microscope by reflected light, but discontinued their work, in most cases, because they were unwilling to undertake the great amount of preliminary work necessary to securely establish a basis for their inferences. It is evident that Messrs. Graton and Murdoch realize that the promised later paper on diagnostic characters will be the more important of the two, but the point should be emphasized to forestall a flood of literature from other investigators who may gain the impression that the brief survey of polished specimens is a wade mecum to incontrovertible conclusions as to any given ore deposit.

Petroleum occurs, in nature, as a fluid saturating the pore spaces between the grains of porous rocks or aggregations of rock particles such as sand, sandstone, conglomerate, shale, limestone, etc. The oil, under the influence of gas pressure, hydrostatic pressure, gravity, earth pressure, and, perhaps, other natural forces, is caused to flow through the porous "reservoir rock1&apos; into wells penetrating the stratum in which the oil occurs. The principal moving force is the pressure of dissolved or occluded natural gas within the oil, though this force is assisted by gravity and by the hydrostatic or buoyant pressure of ground water about the edges of the "pool." The wells, providing outlets to the surface, are centers of reduced pressure and the flow of rock fluids into a particular well is usually an expression of the difference in pressure existing between the space within the well and that of the stored oil within the reservoir rock. The greater this differential pressure, the more rapidly will oil flow from the source rock into the well. Opposing movement of the oil from the reservoir rock into the well are certain natural forces related to the rock structure, such as pore friction and capillarity, and certain others related to the physical properties of the oil, such as viscosity and adhesion. The differential pressure between the well and the boundaries of the area drained by it must be sufficient to overcome the forces opposing flow if there is to be movement of oil into the well. If by any device the resistance to movement of the oil may be reduced, the oil will flow into the well at a more rapid rate and the effective area of drainage will be increased.

AN extended program devoted to the development of a matrix for holding diamonds of a size and. kind not heretofore generally used is being carried on by the Carboloy Company, and this paper describes the part of the development that affects mining and its allied industries. Labora-tory and field work so far has indicated the following: 1. Tungsten carbide and cobalt form the most desirable known matrix material for the holding of diamonds for drilling work. 2. Industrial bort diamonds in sizes and of a class not generally heretofore acceptable and therefore less expensive can be successfully held in this cemented carbide matrix. 3. In exploratory drilling, the combination of bort diamonds, impreg-nated throughout a matrix of tungsten carbide and cobalt, when fabri-cated onto drilling crowns, is an indicated economic substitute for drilling crowns in which the diamonds are set by hand, mechanically or by casting. 4. This impregnated type of drilling crown or bit has definite possi-bilites of revolutionizing the drilling of blast holes, particularly in the harder formations. This will be brought about by the development of high-speed light-weight rotary equipment using an impregnated diamond bit to replace the percussion drill now in general use. (The development of this rotary equipment is well past the laboratory stage at this time.) 5. That the use of a rotary bit is a preventive measure in the fight against silicosis. The development of this product was started by G. F. Taylor at the Research Laboratories of the General Electric Co. It was early recog-nized that it had possibilities in the drilling field and the present product is the result of considerable experimental work with other powdered metals as well as with tungsten carbide and cobalt.

The grain-refinement effect of electromagnetic stirring of Sn-Pb alloys during solidification is investigated at higher field strength and in larger-sized samples. It is found that the grain-refining effect is due to a crystal multiplication phenomenon rather than a nucleation phenomenon. The effect increases with sample size for a fixed field strength and a fixed supercooling bath temperatures. The effect in other alloys was investigated. IN a recent publication1 it was reported that significant grain refinement could be produced during the solidification of a supercooled melt of Sn-Pb alloy when a critical degree of electromagnetic stirring was present in the melt. Thus, for a particular supercooling, AT, a critical magnetic field, Hc, existed at which the number of grains per unit volume, n, increased rather abruptly by a factor of 103 to 104 as the field, H, was increased by a small amount. It was further found that the undercooling at which the melt spontaneously nucleated, ?Tn, was independent of the magnetic field. These authors matched their experimental results against the qualitative expectations of existing theories and found each theory somewhat unsatisfactory. One important question that was not answered in this previous work was "should the effect be classed as a nucleation phenomenon or as a crystal-multiplication phenomenon?" Other valid questions that need answering are: i) do higher magnetic field strengths alter the nature of the results?; ii) what is the effect of higher lead content in the alloy?; iii) what changes occur when one extends the experiments to larger-diameter samples?; and iv) is this a universal effect applicable to the grain refinement of all materials? The present work directs its attention to answering these five questions. The

On the steep slopes of the Kootenays, 15 to 20 miles south of Nelson, B. C., are a number of ore occurrences (Fig. 1). One that has many features of mining and geological interest is the Ymir Yankee Girl Gold Mines Limited. Discovery of this property was made in 1899 at an outcrop on the hillside, some 2500 ft. above the village of Ymir. This proved to be a branch vein 20 ft. long leading to two main veins, the Yankee Girl and the Spur (Fig. 5). The ore pattern as now delimited shows a remarkable increase in ore area with depth below the outcrop. This recent development is of interest particularly in view of the fact that the property was nearly condemned, professionally. Another interesting feature, which has a bearing upon its history, is the persistent excess of tonnage produced from period to period over visible reserves. This is not ascribed to lagging mine development, but to detailed vein characteristics, which we will endeavor to make clear by giving a description of the veins and their surroundings. HISTORY AND PRODUCTION Little interest_was_evidenced-in this-distriet until the building of the railway in 1893 provided easy access and the discovery of the Ymir mine in 1896 attracted attention. As a result, the Ymir Yankee Girl group of claims was staked in October 1899. In 1907, an American syndicate took over the property and subsequently extended the 50-ft. drift and opened the present 400 and 540-ft. levels. In 1908, the Syndicate, without recording any shipments in the meantime, dropped its lease, which was taken up by H. L. Rogers, who bonded the Yankee Girl group. Rogers shipped 2622 tons of ore, mainly from the uppermost stope in the mine, which is reported to have yielded
