MUCH descriptive matter has appeared on the subject of suspension roof supports, or roof bolting, as it is more commonly called. The widespread introduction of roof bolting into coal mines and metal mines is truly phenomenal. Mine operators were quick to recognize the advantages of supporting wide openings without hindrance to machine maneuverability and ventilation. Although suspension roof support has long been installed at St. Joseph Lead Co. mines in southeast Missouri,'" its application to coal mining presented new problems, such as proper anchorage and bearing for the bolts, bolt diameter, and spacing of bolts. After continuous testing and experimenting at the mines, standard roof-bolting materials were determined.'!' The study reported in this paper is not concerned with such details as bolt diameter, which may be considered already solved in practice. In the tests discussed here, small models patterned on actual bolts were found to function in the same way and as satisfactorily as their prototypes. The aim of these tests was rather to investigate the influence of roof-bolting systems on the stress distribution around mine openings and to study the fracture patterns obtained in actual testing. Little was found about this in the literature, as testing of suspension roof methods and quantitative measurements are only now coming to the fore. Several suggestions and actual measurements have been made to evaluate critically the functioning of roof bolting systems, single roof bolts, and parts thereof. Outstanding among them is Bucky's outline of structural model tests.'" Since none of the suggested testing equipment was available, however, for the experiments discussed below, a different approach was chosen. The response of a mine roof under stress has often been compared to that of a beam. The slow coming down and bending through of beam or plate-like banks of shale, sandstone, or top coal is a familiar occurrence, extensively cited in the literature." It was felt that testing of roof-bolt systems installed in a concrete beam which was loaded in bending would be a fair approximation of the behavior of a mine roof underground. Another school of thought considers the roof behavior over an underground opening in connection with the stress distribution all around a circular or rectangular opening. This is more accurate, and leads to the concept of a dome-shaped zone of material destroyed under tensile stress. This is likewise a common sight in unsupported roadways where the continuous fall of roof results in what has been called the natural outline of roof fracture. This theory could not be tested and is treated separately in Appendix B. It is important to note that according to both assumptions the immediate roof fails in tension; the use of a beam in these tests, therefore, should give information valid for either of the two theories. With the testing equipment at hand it was possible to load concrete beams 6xlx0.5 ft under two-point loading, giving an equal bending moment over the center part in which the model bolts were installed. A comparison was made of the ultimate loads needed to break plain beams and beams in which roof bolts were installed. Arrangements were made with: 1—plain beams; 2—bolts with plate washers, some with holes drilled at 90" angles and others with holes drilled at 45" angles; 3—bolts with channel irons underneath; 4—bolts in holes filled afterward with cement; and 5—bolts anchored in a stronger stratum. The foregoing arrangement is made in order of increasing strength, as assumed from the theory of reinforced concrete. Likewise, laminated beams with wooden model bolts and with combinations of the foregoing set-ups were tested. All in all, 21 experiments were made out of the much greater number of combinations possible. There were, too, some trial tests. Enough observations from this limited number were made to interpret the behavior of mine roof, supported by various types of suspension bolts, at fracture. In present-day concepts, which have been proved by mathematical derivations and stress analyses, any opening driven underground will change the distribution and magnitude of the stresses existing around it. It does not matter whether the stresses become visible, as in rocks whose strength is less than the forces acting upon them, or whether they are invisible, as in the gangways lacking evidence of rock pressure. In this latter case the rocks can withstand changes in stress-distribution. To consider the mine roof as a beam, there are, with transversal loading, tensile stresses in the lower fiber and compressive stresses in the upper layers above the neutral axis of the beam. Beams of brittle material such as rock and concrete fail exactly as shown in Fig. 1. Nearly all model beams showed the same fracture pattern as that of a tension crack. HIGHLY pure metals are needed for low-temperature electron transport studies in progress. Recent improvements in purification techniques, such as zone refining, have made it possible to obtain metals with improved purity. For some metals, the improvement has been to the extent that ordinary analytical techniques are inadequate and special methods are needed.1 For other metals purification is more difficult, so that simple but rapid analytical methods are desirable as an aid in evaluating the effectiveness of purification procedures. Furthermore, it is desirable to be able to determine the impurity level of the sample or ingot with the minimum of physical disturbance of the material. In order to aid in the preparation of purer metals, techniques involving the measurement of electrical resistance at liquid-helium temperatures have been devised for studying impurity distributions in zone-refined ingots and other bulk samples without destroying the ingot or its geometry. The method yields information on the variations in purity along the length of the ingot or sample and provides a measure of the overall purity of the material. Compared with ordinary analytical methods, the resistivity method is rapid, sensitive, and does not require significant physical disturbance of samples with reasonable shapes. It has the disadvantage that resistance measurements are not specific, i.e., they do not identify the impurity. However, this disadvantage is offset by the advantage of being able to establish a measure of the overall purity so far as electrically active" impurities are concerned. METHOD AND ITS BASIS The method is based on the well-known fact that the resistivity, at Liquid helium temperatures, of a reasonably pure metal containing no regions with additional phases decreases with increasing chemical purity or a decrease in the number of physical defects. It is convenient to separate the total resistivity into three parts: where is the resistivity due to the scattering of the conduction electrons by the lattice vibrations or phonons, p is the contribution due to physical defects, and originates from the effect of chemical impurities in the metal. Insofar as Matthiessen's rule is obeyed,2 pphys and pchem are independent of temperature. Except possiblyin the very purest metals, ptherm is negligible at liquid helium temperatures and For zone-refined metals, which normally are well annealed and consist of large grains, at the chemical purity levels thus far attained the available data indicate that pphys is negligibly small or at least constant throughout the ingot. SPODUMENE is a lithium-bearing pyroxene, and is an important source of lithium compounds. Because of its high alumina and lithia content. it might be a desirable constituent of glass batches. The use of spodumene in ceramics will undoubtedly increase, as it has been shown that a mixture of the proper proportions of this mineral with soda feldspar and potash feldspar has a much lower maturing temperature upon firing than has any one of the three components.1 The mineral spodumene seldom occurs as pure mineral, but ordinarily with feldspars, mica and quartz. All spodumene-bearing rocks tested contained these minerals as gangue. Small amounts of iron and manganese oxides also were present, usually as stains on the silicate grains. Mica associated with the spodumene carried a considerable amount of lithia. This was discovered in flotation tailings, which, although virtually free of spodumene grains when examined microscopically, showed 0.4 to 0.5 per cent Li20 on chemical analysis. The lithia content of micas picked from the North Carolina spodumene rock was variable. Some samples contained little lithia, others more than 3 per cent. In 1938, under the supervision of Oliver C. Ralston, [t] the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Tennessee Mineral Products Corporation, undertook to study the beneficiation of North Carolina spodumene by froth flotation. The Bureau had previously published investigations on the beneficiation of spodumene.2, 3 The methods described in the second publication3 did not give good results with badly weathered spodumene rock, so that more thorough investigation of the subject was warranted. . In the early decades of the past century the method of starting iron blast-furnaces by " scatlolding-down" seems to have been in universal use for coke-furnaces and, at least in this country, for charcoal-furnaces also. It was likewise used at some of the early anthracite-furnaces, as is stated in the important " Reminiscences" printed by the late Samuel Thomas.' It had been generally superseded in Great Britain as early as 1850, by some variations of the plan now used, and was rarely used when Percy wrote.2 On the Continent it was still followed ill the 60's; and was elaborately described by Valerius in 1852. I have never read any statement as to when and by whom " scaffolding " was first dispensed with, but the following extracts from journals of my father seem to fix an authentic date for an instance in this country: " [Pittsburg] July 12, 1838.—Went with Major Wade to his foundry,etc., and he gave me a letter to D. Tyler, Esq., Farrandsville, Agent Boston Coke & Iron Co." " [Lockhaven, Pa.] July 18, 1838.—Heard there was a flat-boat going to take some gentlemen up to Farrandsville. Got on boat and to Farrandsville, 5 or 6 miles, in 1 hr. 30 min. Dined, and then delivered my letter to Ma Tyler, who showed me much attention, and everything belonging to the furnace, and had the water turned on the wheel that I might see the blowing-cylinders at work. There are two cylinders, 6-ft. stroke, -56 in. in diameter, but they find that one makes more than enough blast for the furnace. The furnace has 16-ft. boshes, 7-ft. tunnel-head, and is 47 ft. high, 3 tuyeres, and 3 heating-ovens [hot blast-ovens]. A

On April 1, 1937, Burma, formerly a province of the Indian Empire, was formally separated from India and became an independent unit of the British Commonwealth. In future, therefore, statistics of oil production in India will exclude Burma and those for Burma will be separately published. The last few years have been marked by noteworthy, almost spectacular, developments in the oil fields of Burma and the Punjab. In Burma these developments have been the proving of unexpected extensions of the existing fields and not the discovery of entirely new fields. The new extensions are important not only to Burma in giving a new lease of life to her fields, but also in general as stressing some interesting geological aspects hitherto neglected. Production The production of crude oil in Imperial gallons has been: Burma India 1934 254,760,070 67,265,210 1935 251,338,974 . 71,323,362 1936 265,656,393 69,241,504 1937 (eat.) 270,000,000 70,000,000 The Chindwin Fields.—The small field at Indaw continues to produce steadily about 3,000,000 gal. a year, but no really deep test has yet been successfully carried out and resources are thus not yet fully known. The remote location of the field, inaccessible except by river and situated 22 miles from the Chindwin 270 miles up that river from its junction with the Irrawaddy, has not encouraged active exploitation. The field is worked exclusively by the Indo-Burma Petroleum Co., Ltd. (I.B.P.), using now an automatic gas-lift system, and the company formerly refined the oil at a small refinery at Pantha on the river near by. The chief market was for kerosene in upper Burma. The refinery has now been closed. The oil is stored on the field during the low-water season

AN earthquake caused an upheaval in Japan, started fires which destroyed large parts of Tokio, Yokohama and Hakone, and with tidal waves and other consequences extinguished some 68,000 lives and much property right at the beginning of September." Also on Sept. 1, the Italians, offended by the murder of members of the Albanian frontier commission by Greeks, occupied the Island of Corfu, which was viewed as an act of war by Italy against Greece. An appeal by the Greeks to the League of Nations was flouted by the Italians. One of the consequences of these affairs was to throw discredit upon the League of Nations and to excite doubts whether it would be able to survive. On Sept. 19, Greece made the formal apology to the Allies collectively and following that the Italians with-drew from Corfu. During this month also the embroilment between Italy and Jugoslavia over the matter of Fiume came again into prominence. In Bulgaria there was a communist uprising which was promptly put down by the government. The whole country was put under martial law. On Sept. 13 there began a military revolution at Barcelona, in Spain. On Sept. 14 the king of Spain accepted the revolution and charged the leader with the formation of a new government. Cosgrave was reelected president of the Irish Free State, without there being any disorder. Great Britain paid the remainder of her silver debt to the United States, thus writing finis to the Pitman Act. The position of Germany went from bad to worse during September. The mark has become valueless and the business that is being conducted is largely on a gold basis once more, in terms of dollars and pounds sterling. Chancellor Stresseman announced Sept. 24 that the German government had decided to abandon pas-sive resistance to the French and Belgians immediately and unconditionally.

The effect of small copper additions on the mar-tensitic transformation behavior in Au-47.5 at. pct Cd was studied by measuring electrical resistivity as a function of temperature. The transformation behavior was found to change and transformation start (M,) temperatures for both the ß to ß' and ß to ß' transformations were depressed substantially by the addition of small amounts of copper. Both M, temperatures were lowered approximately 70°C per at. pct Cu. Copper also had the effect of narrowing the transformation hysteresis region (resistivity us temperature), and for the alloy Au-47.5 Cd-1.5 Cu there was little or no hysteresis; in this alloy, the reverse transfmmation upon heating apparently occurs below the thermodynamic equilibrium temperature, To. THE ß phase in the Au-Cd system occurs at the electron/atom ratio 3/2, and is similar to other ß phases in alloys based on copper, silver, or gold. It is of the CsCl type, in which a considerable degree of long-range order persists to the melting temperature.' The phase boundaries of the ß phase are not known precisely below 300° C, but at room tem- perature the phase exists from approximately 46 to 52* at. pct Cd.2 At low temperatures, the ß phase transforms in a diffusionless (martensitic) manner. Alloys having a composition near 47.5 pct Cd transform upon slow cooling to an orthorhombic3 phase, ß', at - 60°C. Alloys having a composition near 49.0 pct Cd, transform at - 30°C into a phase, ß", which has been recently identified as trigonal.4 Alloys having compositions near 48.5 pct Cd will transform into both the 0' and 0" phases over a range of temperatures. THE electrolytic separation of silver and gold has been practiced by the refineries in the United States for a good many years; and probably because of frequent visiting between officials of plants and the consequent exchange of views, operations in the various silver and gold refineries are very similar. We find, for instance, they practically all use electrolytes of approximately the same composition, which, no doubt, is more the result of experience than of studies of electrolytes. At the new electrolytic parting plant of the U. S. S. Lead Refinery, Inc., East Chicago, Ind., considerable attention has been given to the, composition of electrolytes, especially to their conductivity and their effect on the character of the silver deposit. We are not aware that anything has been recently published on this subject and are, therefore, presenting such data as we have with the idea that, although it will not be wholly new, it may stimulate interest in the subject. EFFECT OF COPPER CONTENT ON CONDUCTIVITY The first work, was to determine the specific conductivity of silver nitrate and copper nitrate solution. Concentrated solutions of silver nitrate and copper nitrate were prepared by dissolving analyzed chemically-pure salts in distilled water, and determining the silver and copper in each. Definite amounts of the concentrated solutions were taken, mixed and diluted to a definite volume. The silver and the copper were determined in each of these solutions and the conductivity was, then determined. The plotted results are shown in Fig. 1 and 2. The effect of increasing quantities of silver and, copper is readily seen. A comparison of the two sets of curves shows conclusively the benefit of holding the copper content of the electrolyte above 50 g. per liter, as its

MANY of the studies of intermetallic compounds containing uranium were performed during the early 1940's under the aegis of the Manhattan Project. Subsequently, much of this work was declassified and published after 1949. In some instances this early work, completed with relatively impure materials, represents the only source of X-ray diffraction powder data available in the literature. In the case of the intermetallic compound U,Fe some discrepancies in the powder pattern exist in the literature. Since this compound has been prepared in this laboratory, it is believed that the publication of the indexed powder pattern would help clarify the conflict in the literature. In studies of the U-Fe system, Gordon and Kauf-mannl and Grogan and Clews2 independently reported the intermetallic compound U,Fe in 1950. The crystal structure was described by Baenziger, Rundle, Snow, and Wilson3 in 1950. It is isostructural with U,Mn, U,Ni, and U,Co and crystallizes in a body-centered tetragonal lattice. The lattice constants determined by Baenziger et al. are: giving an X-ray density = 17.7 g cm-3 for 4 mol per unit cell. The compound used in this study was prepared by melting a stoichiometric mixture of the constituent metals in an argon-arc furnace using a nonconsum-mable tungsten electrode. Before the argon of 99.98 pct purity was introduced into the furnace, it was passed through CaC1, to remove water vapor and afterwards through a stainless steel tube containing calcium turnings heated at 600°C for the removal of nitrogen and oxygen. MARCH 15-Industry is rapidly snapping back from another coal crisis, other business news is in general favorable and the outlook through the Spring is by most observers considered quite promising. Most industries report comfortable backlogs of unfilled orders, department store sales in recent weeks have equalled in dollars those of the corresponding period last year, retail sales of automobiles show again over the same period a year ago, and new orders for machine tools are at the highest figures since August 1946. Orders for railway freight cars have shown a very encouraging pickup, with a total of 9385 cars in January and the N. Y. Central alone ordering 4500 in February. Construction continues very active. In January new housing starts totaled 80,000 against 50,000 a year ago and the daily average contract awards, according to the Dodge reports, were 57 pct larger. In the first 22 days of February the increase in awards was 27 pct. Lumber orders since Jan. 1 have run 22 pct above last year. All of these favorable factors bolster the opinion that the upturn in industrial output and employment which began last summer has not yet spent itself and that the setback caused by the strikes will be made up when people get back to work. Only in a few lines are there indications that primary production may be outrunning the consumption of finished goods, although inventory build-up would seem to be rather modest as the National Association of Purchasing Agents reported in February that 78 pct of its members were buying for 60 days or less. Industrial prices as a whole show no significant trend despite the continued alarm over both the immediate and the long-term possibility of inflation caused primarily by the government's increasing expenditure and its inability to balance the budget. A recent advance of 1.9 pct in primary market prices is viewed by some people as the surface symptom of renewed inflation, but even so it is more than two years since the alltime high was reached by the daily index of sensitive commodities in November 1947. Over two years have passed since prices received by farmers hit their peak and about a year and a half since all wholesale prices and the consumer price index touched their highest points in August 1948. The decline in the wholesale price index has been almost continuous, interrupted only twice by slight advances in the monthly figures from February to March 1949, and, later in the year, from August to September. Of course, this continued decline in the last half of 1949 largely reflects a downward movement in farm and food prices. Wholesale prices for commodities other than farm and food leveled out after June and now stand only slightly under the June level. Farm products are down by 22 pct from January and by 18.6 pct from August 1948. Food prices are down only slightly less. Consequently, the farm price support program is in serious trouble and has imposed a heavy financial burden on the Treasury. In those commodities other than farm products only building materials, chemicals and textiles have come down as much as the average, while housefurnishings and metals and their products have fallen hardly at all. Glancing away from the domestic front, the results of the British general election indicated a highly inconvenient situation, that public opinion there is so exactly deadlocked as to divest the victors of much ability to make forceful decisions or create significant policy. It is generally considered that another election in the near future would give substantially the same result. The British people are equally divided and the politicians are not likely to precipitate another appeal to the country until there is manifest reason to believe that external and internal circumstances have changed sufficiently to permit one party or the other to obtain a decisive verdict. Because of the lack of a clear mandate steel nationalization will likely lag in Britain. In the meantime there is considerable discussion going on as to whether the European steel industries as a whole are at a disadvantage in world competition with the American industry. An article in the "Statistical Bulletin" for January of the British Iron and Steel Federation takes issue on this point with the authors of the Geneva report, observing that they wrote before devaluation, and this particular conclusion "has been overtaken by events." The "Bulletin" also contends that the statement was in any case incorrect so far as Britain was concerned, and that it was based on scanty and insufficient evidence. To support the rebuttal a detailed and extensive comparison is made of the home prices of certain steel products in Britain and in other countries of the world. The accompanying table gives a selection of the prices published. It sets out the changed position since devaluation and since the recent increases in American steel prices. These are home market prices; no doubt in competitive export business some of the price levels could be brought closer together at need.

The Diamond mechanical soot blower system, manufactured by the Power Specialty Co., Detroit, Mich., consists of a permanent installation of units arranged in groups to fit the design of the various boilers to which they are attached. The units are so arranged as to effect the cleaning of the fire surfaces of the boiler, particularly the tubes, by means of steam jets. When this steam is released among the tubes at a velocity of approximately 2700 ft. per sec. (assuming a pressure of 150 lb.), a perfect whirlwind of currents is created, reaching all the nooks and crannies of the boiler, and thoroughly removing the particles of soot and fine-ash accumulation. This operation requires but a moment's time-from 20 to 50 sec. per unit¬and is performed from two to four times a day, while the boiler is under full load, using a greatly decreased amount of steam and labor as compared with the hand hose or any other system of blowing. Moreover, this cleaning is effected without admitting air, with its cooling effects, to the boiler setting. The Diamond model "G" blower consists of five principal elements as follows: 1. A head through which the steam passes from the main supply line when the valve is opened. The head is the foundation element to which the other elements are attached. 2. A wall box which is bricked into the setting. The box supports the unit, and is so constructed that the blower can be turned freely without admitting air to the inside of the setting. 3. A blower element running cross-wise of the bank of tubes, and consisting of a small header with nozzles so placed as to discharge steam between the boiler tubes. 4. A sheave or hand wheel by means of which the blower element is rotated. 5. Bearings attached to the boiler tubes which support the blower element and permit it to revolve freely. The nozzles from which the steam issues are designed on the principle of the Venturi tube, and vary in design for different pressures. The expanding walls of the Venturi nozzle increase the velocity of the steam over 200 per cent., as compared with a nozzle having a straight orifice. Thus, the velocity of the steam issuing from a straight nozzle at 150 lb. pressure is 912 ft. per sec., whereas, at this pressure the velocity of the steam issuing from a Diamond Venturi nozzle is 2795 ft. per second.

An increasing amount of high-temperature metall~?~gical research is carried out in resistively heated tube furnaces in which a bare specimen is suspended by a fine wire at the midpoint of the tube. It is shown that the assumption of near-blackbody conditions on the surface of the sample may give rise to errors in optical pyrometry of 50°C or more. A number of papers published in the metallurgical literature in recent years have described the use of high-temperature tube furnaces for heat treatments, melting-point determinations, and other work. Typically, the tube is of a refractory metal with open ends, is heated by the passage of an electric current, and has concentric cylindrical radiation shields outside it. In at least one of these,' the specimen is contained within a crucible having a small hole in its lid through which optical-pyrometer measurements are made under essentially blackbody conditions. In another design,* the specimen is inside a muffle which is concentric with the heater tube and which contains a number of washerlike longitudinal radi- ation shields to reduce axial temperature gradients and to give conditions near the specimen closer to those of a black cavity. Yet another design3 employs a wire specimen coaxial with the heater tube. Blackbody conditions are simulated by passing current from a separate supply through the wire until it "disappears" against the background (the inside of the heater tube) as seen through a radial spy hole in the tube. Good agreement with known melting points is achieved when an optical pyrometer is used under such disappearance conditions as the melting point is approached. That this latter method works so well is due, evidently, to considerations such as those mentioned by Dike4 and others.5-8 A more common method than the above, however, has been the suspension of an uncovered specimen by a fine wire in a resistively heated tube with open ends. A radial spy hole about midway between the ends of the tube permits optical-pyrometer observations on the specimen, the inside of the tube, or both. So observed, the specimen typically appears to differ but little in brightness temperature from the inside of the tube. According to De vos9 the radiation from such a spy hole in an empty tube of reasonable 1ength:diameter ratio (e.g., 10 or greater) should be essentially blackbody radiation. The extent of losses, due to evaporation, sediment, and water, in crude oil stored in steel tanks, is a very interesting question, and particularly so at this time, when every reasonable measure should be employed to eliminate all possible losses of this important natural product. Available information on this subject is incomplete; e.g., during the development of the Cushing Field, considerable surplus oil was stored in steel tanks, but from time to time, owing to changes in weather, some losses by evaporation and short storage room on the leases, these tanks were topped out, thus rendering inaccurate any system designed to determine the average rate of evaporation or other losses of the oil over a given period. Furthermore, the losses, as shown by the records at the time, as a result of hasty gages, failed to take into account the temperature and gravity of the oil. Losses may be classified roughly as occurring from evaporation, presence of sediment and water, and leakage. The coefficient of expansion and contraction of crude oil, in relation to temperature conditions, is of material importance; also, the rate of evaporation is dependent upon the gravity of the oil, as the escape of the lighter hydrocarbons in fresh Cushing oil, of from 40 to 42 gravity, on a warm day is considerable, and from available records of temporary storage, it is safe to assume that a loss of 1 to 11/2 per cent. in volume will easily occur in light crude oil of Cushing grade over a period of 6 months, including the summer season. The presence of sediment, water, and other impurities, in the oil will also cause more or less deterioration in quality, particularly when the fresh production is run direct from the gage tanks, or from the wells on the lease to steel storage, as is often the case when an oil field is being rapidly developed. The bad oil will settle to the bottom of the tanks and may be determined by thiefing and running a centrifuge test on the sample. The amount of water in the oil depends entirely on the conditions under which it is produced. Sometimes in large producing wells, with heavy gas pressure, some water may come in with the oil, particularly if the well has been drilled to the top of a water sand. As a basis for further progress in several branches of metallurgy, particularly the study of physical properties of solid solutions and the kinetics of solid-solid reactions, a more complete understanding of the structure of solid solutions and the nature of the metallic bond is necessary. Any investigation contributing to this understanding should be of primary interest to the metallurgist. Since the metallic bond is characteristic of an assemblage of atoms, it can be studied only where this assemblage exists. One of the most promising approaches to this study of the interactions in metals is through the general problem of binary metallic solutions. Although crystal structures of many solid metallic solutions have been determined and solubility limits for many systems are given in phase diagram studies, progress beyond this is irregular. Electromotive force and vapor pressure determinations have provided thermodynamic activity data for small concentration and temperature ranges in the amalgams and a few other systems.1 In two systems, however, copper-zinc and iron-carbon, data are available for the calculation of activities over wide ranges of temperature and concentration. This activity data for the brass system is summarized in. the preceding paper.2 A detailed study of the solubility and distribution of carbon in iron is given by Smith and Darken .3 Their treatment of interaction energies is applicable only to dilute interstitial solutions. The objectives here will be to derive from activity data given in the previous paper for the brasses and structural considerations as much new and detailed information as possible about the interactions between copper and zinc in metallic solid solution and the effect of these interactions in determining the short range structure of the equilibrium phases; that is, we shall investigate the energy of interaction between pairs of atoms of the same and different kinds, the deviations of the distribution of nearest neighbors from complete randomness, and show that the conclusions found are consistent with the observed behavior of the brass system. The method of treatment is fairly general for substitutional metallic solid solutions and will be applied to other systems. The determination of vapor pressures of the components of alloy systems is being undertaken in this laboratory to supply more data for this purpose. The information obtained from solid solutions may be extended by careful analogy to liquids as long as the metallic type of bonding is preserved. Since it will be necessary to employ the language of thermodynamics, a brief summary defining the terms used extensively in solution theory is given below.

All strata not yielding oil or gas in commereial quantities or a corresponding amount of water may be called dry in a wide sense. In petroleum geology, however, we may exclude all sands of too low or fine porosity to yield gaseous or fluid contents to the hole drilled in the sand before any original pressure that its contents may be under is disturbed. Most rocks are of this class and they are not reservoirs in our definition; their "dryness" is wholly a matter of course. What are the contents of the pores or what is the exact porosity of such rocks is of almost no concern to us, for economically they are "dry." What does interest us is the content of a rock having sufficient porosity and the pores of sufficient size to yield oil or gas in commercial quantities, if they were present under original pressure. Dryness of these reservoirs is a matter of supreme practical importance. Three views current as to such dryness seem, to me, to apply in a few cases only. It is the purpose of this paper to give reasons for this position and for believing that, in ordinary sedimentary rocks, there is only rarely a reservoir of competent porosity and undisturbed pressure that is dry in the sense of not yielding water, oil, or gas when first penetrated. 1. Gardnerl writes of some Kentucky sands, "There has never been present any salt water or other water in the sand." Absence of water cannot demonstrate this position. It is necessary to show that the rocks were not laid down in water, but in air, and that they became so enclosed, while still above the water-table of the ground water, that water has not been able to enter since. Most of these sands, and certainly the productive limestones, were deposited in water; and such sands as have been commercially productive show no reason for believing that the overlying shale or limestone was not laid down progressively from one direction and in water that would have flooded it. NO adequate explanation has been offered for this hypothesis, which is so inherently improbable. 2, Reeves2 urges that "sands originally water filled may have been drained of their water and not filled when later covered." Few men in the coal-mining industry have had experience in metal mining as well, as has Carroll A. Garner. He went to the Arizona copper country immediately after graduating from Penn State in mining engineering in 1910, and worked in the engineering departments of the Miami and Inspiration companies for two years. Then he came back to Penn State far a year as an instructor in mining engineering before embarking in the coal industry. He was born in Ashland, Pa., July 6, 1889, and reared there, in the heart of the anthracite district, which undoubtedly influenced his choice of a professional career. The green Pennsylvania hills were preferred to the Arizona cactus country. His first coal-mining job was with the Lehigh Valley Coal Co., of which he was division engineer at Hazleton when he joined the Institute in 1917. He gave that up to go to Ohio as head of the Fernwood Mining Co. in 1921, but even that was too far west and after two months he was back in Pennsylvania as assistant general manager of the company that has since monopolized his services the Jeddo Highland Coal Co. Since 1927 he has been vice-president in charge of operations of both the Jeddo-Highland and the Hazle Brook Coal Companies, Jeddo, Pa. Between them they normally produce about 1,500,000 tons of what Mr. Garner will readily admit is the very highest grade of anthracite, utilizing the services of some 2600 men.

A procedure of obtaining specimens of lead, tin, and cadmium with a moderately equiaxed structure and a smooth surface suitable for etching without grinding and polishing is described; the advantages of general oblique illumination (as opposed to vertical illumination) in the photomicrography of pure metals .are stated. Using these methods, a statistical study of the changes brought about in deformed lead, on annealing, has been made. The common mode of structural change was found to be recrystallization. Cases of growth of one original grain into another were rare; but if a totally recrystallized specimen was annealed above 200° C., a few large grains appeared and spread over the whole area, except for a certain number of small grains which remain unabsorbed. The temperature needed to produce structural change in lead was found to be lower, the greater the degree of deformation. With tin, an extension of 28 per cent. caused practically no recrystallization at ordinary temperatures, but recrystallization occurred if the specimen was heated to 100° C. In cadmium at low temperatures, the grain size decreased in marked manner as the deformation increased; but at high annealing temperatures, the grain size was comparatively independent of the degree of deformation. THE structural changes in metals brought about by annealing following a deformation at a low temperature has been the subject of many investigations. (Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) IN order to obtain data on the thermal effect of the blast-furnace jacket and oil the water consumption in these jackets a series of tests were run on the 56 by 180 in. blast furnaces at the Great Falls Reduction Department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., at Great Falls, Mont. The arrangement of the jacket is shown in the transverse section of one of the furnaces (Fig. 1) on which the tests were made. The nose, spout, and breast jackets have independent water supplies and discharges. The end and side jackets are connected in pairs, as regards water supply, the feed water entering at the bottom of the lower jacket and overflowing into the bottom of the jacket immediately above it, and discharging into an independent overflow pipe for each pair of jackets. Tests were run on the main side and end jackets, the breast jacket, the spout, and the nose. Measurements were taken of the quantity of water discharged per minute and the rise in temperature of the water in its passage through the jacket. The product of these two results, expressed in the proper units, evidently gives the number of units of heat removed per minute by the water. Sufficient work was done on each type of jacket to determine its behavior under different conditions, and the results from each set of conditions were checked by repeating the work from three to six times.

IN order to control a chemical process by other than empirical, rule of thumb methods, two types of knowledge concerning the reactions involved must be available: (1) the thermodynamics of the reactions, and (2), by no means less important for efficient operation, the mechanisms and kinetics of the reactions. Information on the thermodynamic side enables the operator to decide upon initial and final conditions, whether heat must be .added or removed from the system, whether the reactions proceed farthest in the desired direction at high pressure or low, etc. Knowledge of the mechanisms involves the determination of the individual steps by which an initial set of reactants, under given conditions, proceed to give the desired final products and kinetic studies upon which the mechanisms are based give the speed at which each of these reactions or steps take place. Thus thermodynamic studies of a 'reaction enable the operator to control the direction and extent to which the reaction can proceed, while kinetic studies enable him to control rates and thus the time' efficiency of the operations. The thermodynamics set the limit to which the reacting system approaches; the kinetics tell how fast the system actually approaches this limit. The two types of information are complementary and not antagonistic even though in discussing the mechanism the introduction of thermodynamics is entirely needless and generally of no assistance, while in thermodynamic studies mechanism need not even be mentioned.

DESPITE the tremendous drop in the volume of domestic production of metals, their prices, and profits, the world as a whole has managed to produce and consume nearly as much as in 1937. Measured by production, 1937 was the record year for copper, lead, and zinc. The Copper Institute figures for 1938 (estimating December as equal to November) show that although apparent domestic consumption declined 309,422 tons, foreign consumption increased 133.035 tons. The total for 1938 was 1,971,790 tons compared with 2,148,177 tons for 1937. The domestic decline was 38.5 per cent, the foreign increase 9.9 per cent, and the total decline 8.2 per cent.
