With the expansion of open pit operations, belt conveyors are going to be used in the 13 608 to 18 144 t/h (15,000 to 20,000 stph) capacity range, which calls for a review of some of the horsepower calculation methods. This paper presents methods (based on German research data, field tests and theoretical considerations) for the evaluation of the Ky factor in the CEMA formula for belt conveyors of large carrying capacity, which fall beyond the limits of the data given in tables in the CEMA book. (The CEMA limits are 407 N\\m (300 lb ft) and Tave = 7.3 Mg (16,000 lb). At these large loads, the impression resistance of the belting on the idlers plays a major role, which in turn influences the magnitude of the drive horse power required. An example will illustrate the order of magnitude difference of the horsepower values obtained by using a conventional calculation method and the suggested method, as well as the beneficcia1 influence of the 4-roll idler in comparison to the standard 3-roll unit for a large caving capacity belt conveyor. This paper concerns itself with the analysis of the resistance to motion of belt conveyors, emphasizing the evaluation of the frictional resistance to motion due to load and belt pressure on the idlers and the flexing resistance of the belt and material when passing over the idlers. In the case of long and heavily loaded belt conveyors, the aforementioned resistances reach extremely high values calling for close analysis of the phenomena, presently not calculable with normally used formulas. This paper establishes correlation between experimental and empirical data presenting practical formulas a tool for the designer of high-capacity belt conveyors. The application of the formula is illustrated in an example in the Appendix.

The coals mined in the area known as the anthracite fields of Pennsylvania have always been recognized commercially as anthracites. In the literature, however, some of these anthracites have been called semi-anthracites by various writers. The coals mined in Sullivan County, especially those from the Bernice field, have been recognized commercially both as anthracites and semi-anthracites. In the literature they have almost always been referred to as typical semianthracites, although Franklin Platt,1 in his report to the Pennsylvania Geological Survey, uses the terms semibituminous, semianthracite, and anthracite in describing them. The purpose of this paper is to endeavor to dispel the confusion of names used to describe these coals and to supply further information that will permit a logical and definite classification. Most of the confusion of the past has been due to the impossibility of securing enough fresh face samples from which to draw sound conclusions; some of it was due, no doubt, to lack of standard methods of analysis, and of course, to the ever-present lack of definition of boundaries from the standpoint of classification. Map Showing Lines of Equal Volatile Matter and Lines of Equal Specific Gravity As a foundation for this work the writer constructed a map showing lines of equal volatile matter and lines of equal specific gravity throughout the anthracite and semianthracite regions. The points on these lines were determined from a study of analyses of 214 face samples from 28 mines and composite analyses from 18 different breakers. These samples were collected through the joint efforts of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the Anthracite Institute. The Bureau of Mines standard method of sampling was used in all cases. All analyses were made by the Bureau of Mines and are used here with its permission. The

GRINDING is one of the major problems in present-day milling practice, and in many cases, it represents one of the main items of expense. It becomes necessary from time to time, to compare grinding practice in one plant with that in another plant, and in making such comparisons, it would be very desirable were there available accepted standards of grinding resistance for the materials involved. Such a set of grinding constants would also be of considerable value in planning new grind-ing installations. There have been some tests published, notably those of Lennox,1 which have been generally cited as a basis for such comparisons. Most of the tests made have been based upon open-circuit grinding, in which a weighed sample of the ore was crushed to pass a certain mesh, and was .then ground under certain conditions, either wet or dry. Grinding was continued until a certain desired fineness was attained, and the compari-sons based on the grinding time, or the samples were all ground for a certain specified length of time and comparison based upon the screen analysis of the products. Such methods have been acceptable where the ore was to be ground in open circuit. However, in modern milling practice, many grinding problems involve closed circuits wherein the oversize returns to the mill and a large circulating, load builds up. A method of testing that does not take the circulating load into consideration might yield results quite different from those to he expected in practice, because the minerals in the ore that offer maximum resistance to grinding will accumulate in the circulating load up to an equilibrium value. Thus the nature of the ore charge in the mill at any instant may differ greatly from that of the new feed, with a consequent error in the rate of grinding determined by such a method.

(communication to the Secretary *).-Wideawake teachers of geology are constantly on the lookout for good illustrations of veins, especially where the processes of formation are either clearly shown or suggested. And I long ago found out that one who would learn nature's laws must despise nothing. It thus happened that in 1910, Dr. George J. Peirce of the depart-ment of botany at Stanford University called to my attention a cracked and broken yellow earthenware dish, 8 ½ in. across the top and 2 ½ in. deep, that, to the ordinary observer, seemed to be of no further use, and quite ready for the waste can. The striking thing about this dish was that the thin glaze over much of the outside surface and over the upper margin of the inside surface had been lifted in small scales, varying in. diameter from ½ cm. to 1 cm., and thrust outward and held there by some sort of white fibrous mineral. The process looked very much like one we are familiar with in the Southern States where. we often see in the winter pebbles and soil thrust out from a clay bank or lifted from a clay soil and held there supported by what is popularly known as needle-ice. Upon inquiry I learned the following facts in regard to the history of this particular dish: In the summer of 1910, it had been partly filled with a concentrated salt solution taken from one of the salterns of the Stauffer Chemical Co. at Redwood City, Cal. A qualitative analysis of the original brine showed: Present: iron, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chlorides, sulphates, nitrates (trace), bromides, carbonates, borates (trace), and considerable amounts of organic matter. Absent: calcium, lithium and iodides.

The recurrence of mine-fires in Nevada during the past decade is not only a matter of interest, but also one of considerable concern to engineers and mine-managers. The more important fires may be enumerated as follows: Forman Shaft fire, Gold Hill, April 21, 1903; shaft-house, machinery, and shaft destroyed; loss estimated at $50,000; cause unknown. Union Shaft fire, Virginia City, July 14, 1904; shaft-house, machinery,and shaft in part destroyed; loss estimated at $100,-000; cause of fire stated as the careless throwing of a match in the rope-house. Sutro Tunnel fire, Virginia City, Jan. 27, 1909; 700 ft. of tunnel-timbering destroyed, and direct damage of $10,000; cause " probably electric wires." Belcher Shaft fire, Gold Hill, Aug. 9, 1910; shaft-house destroyed, machinery ruined, and upper part of shaft damaged; damage, $25,000; no cause given. Belmont Mine fire, Tonopah, Feb. 23, 1911; fire started ill winze; 17 men killed. Giroux Mine fire, Kimberly, Aug. 23, 1911; fire originated in shaft-station from unknown cause; 7 men killed, and $34,-521 damage caused. (Note 1.—On June 11, 1912, some time after the present paper was written, a fire broke out in the pump-room on the 2475 station of the Ward shaft, Virginia City. This fire was caused by the short-circuiting and exploding of the starting-switch on No. 5 pump. The oil in the switch was scattered about and set fire to the timbers and lagging of the pump-room. The pump-man in charge notified the surface, and the electric current was shut off. A hose was then turned on the fire, but the dense smoke drove the attendant out. No observations on the mechanical properties of iron-manganese alloys have been published since pure manganese became readily available, either distilled manganese or electrolytic manganese. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether iron-manganese alloys are essentially brittle, as reported by Hadfield,1 or whether the lack of ductility observed was due to impurities in the alloys that he studied. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The alloys were melted in a 100-lb. high-frequency induction furnace with a magnesia crucible, using ingot iron and electrolytic manganese. The heats were split, the first giving six 18-lb. ingots and the second three. Each successive heat was higher in manganese and about 0.3 per cent silicon [ ] was added as ferrosilicon. The alloys forged without difficulty-and were given a 90 percent reduction to 3/4-in. rounds. The chemical analysis of the alloys is given in Table I. The forged rods were homogenized for [ ] 24 hr. at 1150°C. (2100°F.) and air-cooled. The alloys were tested in two conditions of heat-treatment: (I) as normalized from 870°C. (1600°F.) and (2) normalized from 870°C. and tempered for z hr. at 540°C. (1000°F.) and air-cooled. The tensile specimens were 0.505 in. in diameter with a 2-in. gauge length, and the impact specimens were V-notch Charpy. The proportional limit and yield strength were taken from the stress-strain diagrams drawn by a Peters recorder. The data obtained from the tensile test and the hardness measurements are given in Table 2. Specimens that were normalized are designated by N; those that were normalized and tempered by T. Alloy G was tempered after forging (D).

The pore pressure must be included in any discussion of the state of stress within a rock. Rock cylinders at elevated stress levels, loaded uniaxially to a stress less than the yield strength, can be fractured by holding the constraints constant and increasing the pore fluid pressure. This can be described in terms of the Mohr envelopes using effective stresses. The effective stress concept can simplify data with various confining and pore pressures. When the pore and confining pressures are equal, the pore pressure appears to be totally effective in reducing the confining pressure effects. The area over which the pore pressure acts has been the subject of some prior discussions. Terzaghi 1 defined boundary porosity as ". . . the ratio of that part of the area of the potential surface which is in contact with the interstitial liquid and the total area of this surface." His method of calculation included a discussion of splitting failure which was objected to by Mr. Kessler, National Bureau of Standards. The values calculated by Terzaghi were close to unity. Leliavsky,2 using unjacketed cement cores, reported that the interstitial fluid pressure appeared to act upon about 92% of the surface of failure. He concluded: "The fraction of the area of cross-section over which the internal pressure acts can therefore have nothing to do with ordinary porosity, and the results of the experiments tend to support Professor Terzaghi's views." In 1947 Balmer3 determined the boundary porosity of concrete when the confining and pore pressures were equal. He also found values close to unity. During the past few years the author has had an opportunity to examine a number of base-metal mines in the western United States, France and Spain. Nearly all of these mines produced some silver, and laboratory studies of the relationship between the silver and the various base-metal minerals in the ore have given some interesting and, it is to be hoped, enlightening facts. As this work was undertaken primarily to ascertain the amount of silver chemically associated with, not controlled by, the various base-metal minerals, the laborious and not always satisfactory method of picking out "pure" samples of each mineral from many localities was employed. However, the results obtained have justified the time that has been spent. Not only have the conclusions arrived at in different mining areas been in accordance with one another but in many instances they have afforded scientific support or explanations for much of the knowledge that operators in the various camps have acquired by practical experience. Although many of the conclusions are not new, many of the facts are, and the results, if they do nothing else, serve to confirm the findings of some of the other workers in this field, particularly the work of Nissen and Hoyt1 and of F. N. Guild2. Dr. S. G. Lasky3 has suggested a novel method for determining from a series of algebraic equations the amount of silver controlled by each of the base-metal minerals but I doubt very much whether his method can be justified, chiefly because there appear to be more variables to be considered than the few that appear in his equations. The hot-milling process for reconditioning rock-drill bits is not new. It has been employed by a few mines for years and in the past decade it has been widely adopted, as its advantages have become better known. Because of the extensive commercial development in England and Canada of machines to operate on this principle, general acceptance has been largely in the British possessions and until recently has been chiefly in the field of conventional steel. In the past two years there has been a definite trend toward hot-milling of detachable bits in Canada, but only in the past year has any considerable attempt been made to build special machines for this type of work. Generally a machine designed for conventional steel has been used and special holders employed to manipulate the bit. As early as 1934 at least one operator in the United States had adapted hot-milling to conventional steel with a substantial saving in resharpening costs.1 Several other operators have taken it up but there has been no widespread adoption of the method in this country by users of conventional steel. This may be partly explained by the fact that until recently no American manufacturer produced this equipment and operators have been obliged to build their own hot-millers or import them. Several years ago a few machines were built in Seattle, Washington, and operated in some mines in the northwest, but, for reasons not generally known, the effort was abandoned. The Process Hot-milling performs the function of re-dressing the bit at a forging temperature of about 1650°F., by the removal of metal from the flutes with a milling cutter, followed by a similar cut from the bit gauge. Conventional bits are thus treated following the usual forging operation in a sharpener, and usually in the same heat.

In these days of the almost exclusive use of byproduct coke as the blast-furnace fuel in this country, it may seem out of place, and smacking too much of reminiscing, to say anything about the use of anthracite coal for blast-furnace fuel. Viewed in the light of present day research and of developments in alloy steel, some observations seem appropriate regarding this raw material that played such an important part in the development of the iron and steel industry during 50 years of the past century. The research work of that period, in which the whole iron and steel industry was revolutionized, passing from wrought iron to steel and from charcoal to three new mineral fuels for blast furnaces, was done chiefly in the full-sized plants of that day; and it was done largely by the ironmasters themselves. The laboratory had not become a part of the ironworks, and scientific instruments were lacking around the blast furnaces; "rule o' thumb" and erroneous theories prevailed—and have not yet all been eliminated. The recent interest in meteoric iron in connection with nickel steels and other alloys proves that it is worth while to search for the reasons for excellence and the causes for failures in the metallurgy of bygone days. Turner1 gives the reasons why the blast furnace of Dr. F. W. Geissen-hainer on Silver Creek, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, about 10 miles northeast of Pottsville, was operated successfully with anthracite2 in August and September, 1836, and why several other attempts failed. It has taken a long time for us to find out that there are great differences in the behavior of anthracites from the several parts of the anthracite region, as well as differences in coking coals from the bituminous fields.

Turner1 gives the reasons why the blast furnace of Dr. F. W. Geissen-hainer on Silver Creek, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, about 10 miles northeast of Pottsville, was operated successfully with anthracite2 in August and September, 1836, and why several other attempts failed. It has taken a long time for us to find out that there are great differences in the behavior of anthracites from the several parts of the anthracite region, as well as differences in coking coals from the bituminous fields.

During the past few years the author has had an opportunity to examine a number of base-metal mines in the western United States, France and Spain. Nearly all of these mines produced some silver, and laboratory studies of the relationship between the silver and the various base-metal minerals in the ore have given some interesting and, it is to be hoped, enlightening facts. As this work was undertaken primarily to ascertain the amount of silver chemically associated with, not controlled by, the various base-metal minerals, the laborious and not always satisfactory method of picking out "pure" samples of each mineral from many localities was employed. However, the results obtained have justified the time that has been spent. Not only have the conclusions arrived at in different mining areas been in accordance with one another but in many instances they have afforded scientific support or explanations for much of the knowledge that operators in the various camps have acquired by practical experience. Although many of the conclusions are not new, many of the facts are, and the results, if they do nothing else, serve to confirm the findings of some of the other workers in this field, particularly the work of Nissen and Hoyt1 and of F. N. Guild2. Dr. S. G. Lasky3 has suggested a novel method for determining from a series of algebraic equations the amount of silver controlled by each of the base-metal minerals but I doubt very much whether his method can be justified, chiefly because there appear to be more variables to be considered than the few that appear in his equations. EXTENDED discussions, by inviting attention to problems affecting the conservation of natural resources, have encouraged investigations as to their sufficiency, with the general result that the more thorough the examination, the less cause appears for anxiety as to the exhaustion or serious depletion of these resources. The extent of industrial development, the large plants and the enormous volumes of materials required, when compared with conditions a few decades ago, are sufficiently startling to enlist the attention of those who "fear .the pace," and yet in but few instances has real solicitude for the future. been warranted by a knowledge of true conditions. In a former communication, presented 5 years ago,1 I endeavored to emphasize the fact that true conservation represented the best utilization of reserves and not the locking up of resources for future use; a conviction which has become more pronounced as the subject was investigated. Prophecies of the, early exhaustion of mineral resources have raised the question as to our permanent reliance upon these, and encouraged inquiries which have in most cases developed reassuring conditions. But the fact that the future appears less dark than prognosticated cannot excuse wastefulness or improvidence; and detailed study which demonstrates an apparent abundance of natural resources should encourage their best application. In making inventories of resources one is liable to confine conclusions as to availability upon present circumstances and conditions in the past, or to formulate data for the future upon methods which are rapidly being displaced. In reserves which are not reproductive, such as minerals, the possibilities of exhausting the supply are startling if estimates assume that future extensions will follow methods which were less economical than those now employed, or to he used, and we dare not claim that the limit of advanced practice has been attained.
