Gold wires, 5 mil in diam, are found to creep viscously up to approximately 5.5x106 dynes per sq cm around 1300°K. Beyond this point, an additional slip mechanism appears. The average coefficient in the viscous range at these temperatures is 18.9 ± 7x10 12 poises. This observation and other visual observations made during the experiments agree with Herring's predictions. EARLY creep studies by Chalmers on single crystals of tin produced some of the first experimental evidence to suggest that metals deform viscously under very light stresses. That is to say, over a small initial stress range up to 150 g per sq mm, the single crystals of tin elongated at a rate proportional to the stress. The proportionality constant between strain rate and stress is by definition the coefficient of viscosity. Chalmers named this range of proportionality the microcreep range. One of the first theoretical attempts to explain the microcreep phenomenon was given by Kauzman,' who applied Eyring'sQ eneral statistical mechanical theory of shear rates to creep data then available. From the rate theory, he deduced the general hyperbolic sine law for shear rate on the assumption that the distortion of the reaction path due to stress is negligible and that the system is an infinite continuum. In order to fit the available data to the equation, it was necessary to assume that creep occurs by shear of rather large blocks of material, rather than by an atomistic shear process as in diffusion. The size of the shear units was shown to increase with increasing temperatures and lower stress, or lower strain rates. In applying the hyperbolic sine law equation to the microcreep data of tin, it was shown by Kauzman that the unit shear blocks became quite small, which suggested to him that microcreep might be a self-diffusion process. Making this an assumption, Kauz- man reworked the rate theory and arrived at an equation where the shear rate is proportional to the stress. In the form of viscosity coefficient, the equation is: o- _ \LkT V = 2qAlA where u is the stress; S, the shear rate; X, the distance in shear direction moved by flow units relative to one another in the unit process; L, the distance between layers of units of flow; T, the absolute temperature; k, Boltzmann's constant; qAL, a constant proportional to the size of flow units; and kT A, the diffusion coefficient = ------kTe-Q/RT = K X2 h Kauzman applied the expression to molten lead with a fair degree of success, the calculated viscosity being low by a factor of four. For solid lead the result is 5000 times too high. Taking q = 1, and X = dA = L = 21 = nearest neighbor distance, Udin, Shaler and Wulff8 found the equation low by a factor of lo7 for solid copper. On the basis of the discrepancy in lead, Kauzman indicated that microcreep is probably not a simple diffusion process of molecular shear units, but one involving preferential diffusion paths, or even that diffusion in solids does not involve shear at all. Cottrell and Jaswon4 treat the microcreep phenomenon on the basis of slow moving dislocations and apply it to Chalmers' data on tin with fair success. Nabarro Suggested a microcreep model in which mass movement in the direction of pull is effected by the diffusion of holes. The activity of nickel in liquid Pb-iVi alloys which are rich in lead was measured in the temperature region of 700° to 1100°C by means of the galvanic cell: The electrolyte used was stabilized zirconia. The work of Kuikkola and wagnerl and Schmalz-reid2 has shown that the stabilized zirconia electrolyte is essentially an ionic conductor at the oxygen levels encountered in the experimental arrangement of the work, i .e., PG > 10-l7 atm. THE EXPERIMENTS The advantage of this type of reversible cell over those using a liquid electrolyte is the simplicity arising because the electrolyte also functions as one of the containing crucibles. A further simplification was the choice of the Ni (sat.)-NiO electrode as the standard. This permitted a ready check on the behavior of the electrolyte, as the potential of the cell must become zero when the right electrode becomes saturated with nickel, either because of a change of temperature or because of the addition of nickel to the electrode. It also permitted the potentials being measured to lie in the most satisfactory experimental range of 0 to 100 mv. Although it was not theoretically necessary, lead was included in the standard electrode as it assured good contact between the electrode and electrolyte. Cell Design. The general arrangement of the experimental cell assembly is shown in Fig. l(a) and the details of the cell itself are contained in Fig. l(b). The anode lead wire on the interior of the cell was connected to a coil of perforated sheet nickel. Within this coil were nickel oxide pellets which were held beneath the surface of the liquid Pb-Ni alloy. A disc of nickel oxide was held at the bottom of the external crucible (alumina) by means of the thermocouple protection tube. The nickel oxide disc and pellets were compressed dry at 10,000 psi and sintered at approximately 1000°C for an hour in air. OLEIC acid, a standard flotation reagent, has generally been preferred to other fatty acids. Because oleic acid differs from saturated fatty acids by the presence of one carbon-to-carbon double bond and because the flotation operation is one in which extremely intimate exposure of the reagent to oxygen is obtained, it appeared possible that the value of oleic acid as a flotation collector was related to the oxidizability of its double bond. To test this hypothesis, the floated mineral, fluor-ite, was leached with a solvent capable of extracting the adsorbed reagent and the extract was analyzed.' Results show that oleic acid is not oxidized during flotation, although some oxidation can be obtained if the flotation operation is repeated many times and if oxygen in place of air is employed as the gas during flotation. Incidentally, it was found that lino-leic acid which has two nonconjugated double bonds is not affected appreciably more than oleic acid. Linolenic acid which has three nonconjugated double bonds is measurably altered even during one flotation step, using air. The fatty acids used, from the Hormel Foundation, were of the highest purity. The quantity of fatty acids employed in each test was sufficient to float the mineral, but less than the theoretical amount required to form a monolayer at the mineral surface. The purpose of this limitation was to eliminate droplets of oil smeared on the adsorbate-covered mineral surface. The mineral was dried in vacuum at about 60 °C. Effective leaching was obtained by use of a solution of 1 pct hydrochloric acid in absolute alcohol. The extract was separated from the solvent by distillation, with final recovery of the extract in carbon tetrachloride. The identity of the extract was tested by a combination of analytical procedures including infrared spectroscopy, saponification number, iodine number, and index of refraction. At the outset, great hopes for accurate quantification of oleic acid oxidation had been entertained in regard to the method of infra-red spectroscopy. Unfortunately, because the double bond in the oleic acid is so sym- metrically located at the center of the molecule that it provides very weak absorption bands, accurate quantitative analyses were not obtained. Nevertheless, infra-red spectrograms suggested the absence of double-bond oxidation during flotation. Iodine number, semi-micro method, provided a critical test of the extent to which fatty acids oxidized during flotation, see Table I. The index of refraction was used in a qualitative rather than quantitative fashion, and its findings corroborated those obtained by the iodine-number method. It is concluded, in the case of fluorite and C-18 fatty acids having one or two nonconjugated double bonds, that there is practically no change of the fatty acid molecule or ion during the flotation operation. It would appear, therefore, that the extraordinary utility of these reagents is related to some property of the compounds other than the oxidizability of their double bonds. In the withdrawal of fluids from tilted aquifers it is of value to be able to predict pressure patterns during the course of the pressure decline. As an example of this, in the displacement of fluids from oil reservoirs being produced by water-drive, prediction of the reservoir pressure is an important factor in fixing production rate. The prediction of pressure patterns in the depletion of an inclined aquifer has conventionally been made by solving the well known flow equations for the pressure Patterns in a horizontal aquifer, and correcting these patterm for the pressure difference due to the hydrostatic head associated with the vertical distance between a point in the horizontal aquifer and the corresponding point in the tilted aquifer. Inasmuch as the equation describing flow in tilted strata is different from that for horizontal flow. there was question as to the validity of the simple corrective procedure current1y in use. To examine the magnitude of error made using this procedure, an inclined aquifer was chosen for which the error was expected to he large, and the equation for flow in this tilted stratum was solved numerically. The results of the conventional procedure of correcting the solution of the equation for horizontal flow was compared with the solution of the correct equation by studying the difference between predicted pressures by the two methods. Three forms of the hydrostatic head correction were studied. The results for all three forms of the head correction are similar. The error in the approximate solution is quite dependent on the position of the horizontal aquifer with respect to the inclined one. The error is greatest at the producing end ad increases with amount of fluid withdrawn. The magnitude of the errors is not large if a good choice is made for the position of the horizontal datum. The most satisfactory position for the datum in all cases is near or slightly about the mid-point of the inclined stratum. Use of the best approximate method studied with the best datum tested yielded predicted pressures in error no greater than 7 psi. INTRODUCTION The movement of water by expansion from an aquifer to displace fluids from a contiguous oil reservoir was first recognized over 20 years ago.9 Since that time much work has been done to relate this mechanism to reservoir behavior mathematically. The result of this effort on the part of many workers has led to an understanding of underground fluid movement which has enabled us to follow and predict the behavior of the water-drive reservoir. One reason that good progress has been made in the application of mathematics to the study of pressure patterns and water movements in aquifers has been that the differential equation which describes this process is of a relatively simple form. The equation for the isothermal, horizontal, viscous flow of water through homogeneous sandstone is identical with that for the diffusion of heat through homogeneous solids, and this equation and means of obtaining solutions for it with many types of boundary conditions have been studied extensively. The industry has been canvassed for information on methods of handling grinding steel at milling plants, an important subject overlooked in most descriptive articles on milling plant arrangements. The data collected are offered in this paper as a guide to designers and planners who have loading and storage problems to solve. WITH capacities of milling plants expanding from a few hundred tons per day to many thousand, replenishment of grinding media is an important phase of mill operation. Information on this aspect of milling procedure, solicited from several mining companies, is summarized here. At International Nickel's Copper Cliff concentrator the normally strenuous job of changing rods is considerably simplified by the use of the Garrow rod charging machine, Fig. 1. The overhead crane, Fig. 2, brings a bundle of rods, weighing four to a ton, to the loading platform of the machine, positioned in front of the mill. The rods roll one by one down the slight incline of the platform onto a conveyor which sends them into the mill. A modified version of the Garrow machine, Fig. 3, is used at the Federal mill of St. Joseph Lead Co. An overhead crane places the portable steel structure in position in front of the discharge end of any one of the five 9x12-ft rod mills. It then raises a bundle of about twenty 3-in. rods to the discharge platform of the charging machine. The rods are 11 ft 7 in. long and weigh about 278 lb. By tripping a lever the operator allows one rod at a time to roll onto the inclined rollers. A slight push by the operator sends the rod smoothly into the mill. The Union Miniére du Haut Katanga rod charging machine, Fig. 4, is mounted on a pair of wheels at the forward end with swiveling castors at the back for steering it to position for use or storage. Wheels are equipped with locking brakes to maintain the machine in position while it delivers rods to the mill. The device is made in two parts. The first consists of the base, which carries the supporting wheels, grooved rollers, and drive. The other part serves as the rod deck, which can carry up to six 3-in. x 12-ft rods. A short boom built integral with the base reaches through the mill trunnion and delivers the rods into the mill barrel. Three grooved guide rollers ,are provided to receive the rods from the sloping charging deck. One rod at a time is fed to the rollers and thus delivered into the mill. Two of the rollers are driven by 11/2-hp motor through a V-belt drive. The third roller is driven off the first by a single V belt in a groove below the rod groove and on the same center line. Rods are delivered to the charger by an overhead crane in bundles of three to six as needed. The power is supplied by cables plugged into power outlets, suitably located near the rod mill discharge end. The Oliver Iron Mining Co. uses a rod charger, Fig. 5, suspended from a monorail by cables. It is constructed .of structural steel and has two decks, each capable of carrying five rods of 4-in. maximum diameter. The rods ride in grooved free-turning rollers. New organic flocculants of high-molecular weight are replacing lime, glue, and starch in liquid-solid separation. Of these synthetic materials, poly-acrylamides are outstanding. Polyacrylamides form a class of compounds varying widely in composition and activity. Separan 2610, one of the first of these flocculants' released to the mining industry in 1954, is described' as a high-molecular weight polymer of acrylamide with or without a copolymer material and with some replacement of amide by carboxylic groups. MECHANISM OF FLOCCULATION In practice, flocculation makes solids settle faster and filter better. But two opposing factors control it. The random motion that causes particles to collide favors Van der Waals' forces, which hold the particles together. The effect of zeta potential opposes this contact, and particles are mutually repelled. Flocculation can be achieved by reducing the magnitude of the zeta potential; this is the mechanism of flocculation by lime addition. The way in which polyacrylamides accomplish flocculation is not fully understood, but the action is undoubtedly comp1ex and probably varies considerably depending on the system. To begin with, the active groups of these compounds have an extremely high affinity for solid surfaces, probably by hydrogen bonding." Initially some active groups of the molecule attach themselves to the solids with a large portion of the molecule extending into the solution. Two particles can become tied together by long flocculant molecules in the following ways—by bonding between the active groups of two flocculant molecules on different particles, or by an extended molecule from one particle attaching itself directly to the surface of the other particles." These flocculant bridges prevent the particles from moving apart through random motion, but when such motion moves them together other active groups on the flocculant bridge bond to the solids, holding them in the closer position. This process is repeated until the particles are close together. Although bridging is probably a major flocculation mechanism, it is not the only phenomenon involved. Relatively neutral acrylamide flocculants reduce the magnitude of the zeta potential by increasing the viscosity of solution in the immediate vicinity of the solid surface which contains the mobile counter ions of the double layer. In other words, it moves the shear surface which bounds the zeta potential out into the solution containing counter ions which tend to neutralize the zeta potential. This effect is probably more pronounced during the initial adsorption period, before the flocculant molecules are pulled close to the solid. In some cases the slight charge of the polyacry-lamide molecule tends to neutralize a zeta potential. However, this is not a primary flocculation mechanism, as evidenced by the fact that the polyacrylamides will flocculate solids with either positive or negative zeta potential. Adsorption of polyacrylamide flocculants by a solid is substantially an irreversible reaction. Since the flocculant molecule is attached to the particle surface by many active groups of high bonding strength, desorption would require the simultaneous breaking of many bonds—an unlikely occurrence. UNIQUE PROPERTIES The irreversible adsorption of certain polyacrylamides, the flocculant's high affinity for solid surfaces and its rapid adsorption make it effective, but these unique properties require special techniques to achieve maximum flocculation. This paper describes a method for obtaining compositions of gas and oil phases in equilibrium with each other at a given reservoir temperature and pressure as lean or enriched gas is injected into a reservoir oil not in equilibrium with the gas. The method is based on calculation of equilibrium constants, K, from the equation log Kp = A + B F, where p is pressure and F is component characterization factor. A and B are constants that vary with a composition parameter. The paper explains how A and B could be determined with a minimum amount of data. The method consists of calculating equilibrium constants as a function of liquid composition and using the K's to calculate changes in compositiort of injection gas as it successively contacts original resetvoir oil at the gas-oil front and the change in composition of reservoir oil as it is successively contacted by the injection gas in the vicinity of an injection well. An iterative process is required. Two examples of the method are given which show how oil and gas compositions and properties are calculated with the aid of a computer. INTRODUCTION The calculation of recovery from lean-gas or enriched-gas injection into a saturated or under-saturated reservoir oil requires a knowledge of how phase properties change in a reservoir between injection well and producing well. To determine the phase compositions or properties experimentally would be difficult and time consuming, especially if one wanted to look at the effect of various injection gas compositions. For some fields an engineer would want to make preliminary calculations on the economics of gas injection before he makes the decision to spend a corrsiderable sum of money for laboratory work to obtain the necessary fluid properties. A method for calculatine compositions and properties based on a minimum of laboratory data is described. The minimum amount of data required is injection gas and reservoir oil composition and injection gas solubility as a function of pressure for an undersaturated oil, or the compositions of mixtures of reservoir fluid with two or more enriched gases, which mixtures have a bubble-point pressure that is the same as the expected average displacement pressure. On the other hand, if the economics appear to be attractive, more laboratory data can be obtained in the form of equilibrium constants for three or more mixtures of the reservoir fluid and injection gases. The method is based on the calculation of K's from the equation, log Kp = A + B F, where K is equilibrium constant, p is pressure and F is component characterization factor. This method of plotting K data by means of the above equation is described by Hoffman, Crump and Hocott.1 A and B are constants that vary with a composition parameter. It is shown how experimental data are used to determine how A and B vary with composition. BASIS OF METHOD EQUILIBRIUM CONSTANTS Equilibrium constant (K) data are required for this method. The K of each component is obtained from an equation that gives the product of K and pressure as a function of component characterization factor. The characterization factor F = b(l/Tb — l/T), where b is a constant characteristic of a given component, Tb is the boiling point in OR at atmospheric pressure of the given component, and T is the temperature of the system in OR. This method of plotting K data is described by Hoffman, Crump and Hocott.l The straight-line equation of the log Kp - F plot is log hp = log Kop +BFi, where Kop is at F =0, i designates the component, and B is the slope of the line. RECENT investigators have noted anomalous behavior in the electrical resistivity of vanadium below room temperature. Rostoker and Yamamoto1 in studying the vanadium-oxygen system hypothesized that the body-centered-tetragonal phase existing from 15 to 34 at. pet O at approximately 800°K was really a low-temperature allotrope of vanadium that was stabilized by oxygen. In measuring the electrical resistance of cold-swaged vanadium rod over a range of temperatures, a small discontinuity was observed at approximately 240°K, supporting their notion of allotropy. However, the magnitude of the observed discontinuity was extremely small. Loomis and Carlson2 in studying the ductile-brittle transition in vanadium also made resistance measurements and reported a discontinuity near 200°K. More recently, White and Woods3 showed that the electrical resistivity from room temperature to approximately 100 °K was not linear and at variance with the Bloch-Griineisen law. The creep behavior of hot-rolled, hypoeutectic Zn-Ti alloys was investigated in the temperature range from 0.43 to 0.53 TM. Secondary flow was found to originate primarily from strain-induced gvain growth where grain boundary )nigvation served to relieve the strain energy of distortion introduced by slip, grain boundary sliding, and subgvain formation. The extent to which this recovery mechanism operated was determined by the ratio of grain width to the spacing between planar fibers of TiZn,, compound particles generated in these alloys during rolling. When this ratio was unity, creep resistance demonstrated a marked improvement. In this condition, which was fulfilled by annealing following rolling, structural stability was enhanced with decreasing grain size below the equicohesive temperature (-0.5Tm), while the reverse was true above this temperature. TITANIUM concentrations approaching the eutectic composition of 0.23 wt pctl have been shown to promote a significant increase in the creep resistance of rolled zinc,2 The alloying effect created with titanium is somewhat unique; a structure closely resembling that of a fiber-reinforced metal composite can be developed which selectively modifies creep strength in preference to other mechanical properties. In an earlier investigation,~ the present authors found that, while the fiber network, composed of individual TiZn,, compound particles, had a distinct influence on rolled texture, the crystallographic variations produced were of minor importance with respect to creep. Rather, creep resistance seemingly increased when the grain size appeared to coincide with the in-terfiber spacing. The work described here was undertaken to explore this effect in greater detail. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Three zinc-base alloys containing 0.05, 0.12, and 0.16 wt pct Ti were prepared from CP zinc and iodide titanium in the form of 4 by 2 by f in. chill-cast ingots. The melting and casting procedures for these alloys have been detailed el~ewhere.~ Individual ingots of each alloy were hot-rolled at 200°C (392°F) to total reductions of 10, 25, 50, 75, and 90 pct in from one to five passes, respectively, employing a 10-min reheat prior to each rolling pass. With grain, tensile-type creep specimens with a 1-in.-long, -in.-wide gage section were machined from the rolled strips for test purposes. Annealing studies to explore the influence of grain size on secondary creep flow were carried out at 400°C (752°F) in argon for times extending up to 60 min. The grain-size effect was evaluated in terms of average grain width and length values statistically derived from lineal intersection measurements.4 A similar method was applied in establishing the average interfiber spacing, i.e., average perpendicular distance between adjacent planar fibers. The creep characteristics of the alloys were investigated by means of constant-load and constant-stress creep tests. The former tests were conducted at 25°C (77°F) under an initial stress of 10,000 psi, while the latter were performed in the range from 25°C (77°F) to 90°C (194°F) at stress levels varying from 8000 to 22,000 psi. Total specimen strain, as determined with Budd HE-1161-B strain gages, was in excess of 0.10. Maintenance of constant stress was achieved through periodic load reductions made at 0.01 strain intervals to compensate for the attendant incremental reduction in specimen cross-sectional area. The maximum indicated error in the applied stress at these strain intervals was less than 3.0 pct. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Constant-Load Creep. In an effort to clarify the in-terrelation between interfiber spacing and grain size with respect to the creep resistance of the Zn-Ti alloys, their separate effects on secondary creep rate were determined as a function of titanium content and rolling reduction. These results are set forth in Figs. 1 and 2, respectively. The average grain diameter plotted in Fig. 2 was resolved from average grain width and length values. No data are presented for reductions of less than 50 pct because of the inability to obtain consistent measurements on these strips. The curves of Fig. 1 indicated that, for a given titanium content, a decrease in interfiber spacing, as produced with increasing reduction, promoted a decrease in creep rate. Depending on titanium content, however, wide variations in creep rate occurred at the same interfiber spacing suggesting that interfiber spacing, by itself, has little or no influence on creep resistance. Grain size, on the other hand, decreased progressively with both increasing rolling reduction and titanium content, the effect of which led to a pronounced decrease in creep rate, particularly when the average grain diameter became smaller than 3.0 x 10"4 in., Fig. 2. The continuity of this relationship tended to support the view that grain size rather than interfiber spacing was predominant in controlling secondary creep. Annealing Effect. The observed dependence of creep flow on grain size suggested that a further contribution to creep resistance would result when the alloys were annealed to effect a coincidence between grain width and interfiber spacing, see Fig. 3(b). ~eiides creating an immediate barrier to grain boundary movement, annealing offered the possibility of providing increased structural stability by eliminating many high-energy, mobile grain boundaries.= To test this hypothesis, specimens from the Zn-0.16 Ti strips reduced 75 and

In single-stage autogenous grinding, the buildup of a critical size fraction in the media can be corrected by removing this material through pebble ports, crushing it below the critical size range, and recycling the crusher product back to the mill. The rate at which the critical sire fraction is crushed affects the size distribution of the grinding media and this in turn affects the sire distribution of the grate discharge. This provides a means for controlling the grind produced by a single-stage autogenous grinding unit. The pilot-plant investigations on a very hard copper ore were carried out at the facilities of the Institute of Mineral Research, Michigan Technological University. In an autogenous grinding circuit in which feed at approximately 9 in. top size is reduced to a size suitable for subsequent processing, the build-up of a "critical size" fraction in the media causes problems. A "critical size" fraction has been defined as, "media too small to effect reduction by impact grinding of ore coarser than a quarter of an inch and too large to be broken by the largest size of media in the charge."' The buildup of a critical size fraction reduces the capacity of the mill, increases the grinding power requirements per ton of finished product, and generally produces a finer grind than is desired. It is general practice to overcome this problem by the addition of large-diameter steel balls to the grinding charge. This has certain disadvantages, such as 1) an increase in mill liner wear, 2) wear on the steel balls, and 3) some loss in flexibility in grinding circuit opera-tions resulting from difficulties in removing the steel balls by means other than by grinding out. A number of investigators' have suggested the use of a small crusher as an alternative to the use of large steel balls for control of a critical size fraction. With this technique the critical size fraction is removed from the mill continuously through suitable-sized pebble ports, crushed below the critical size range, and returned to the mill. An external crusher would cause no increase in mill liner wear, the wear on the crusher would be less expensive than the wear on the steel balls, and the flexibility of the grinding circuit operations would be enhanced since the crusher can be cut into and out of the circuit at will. This paper describes an autogenous grinding pilot plant investigation on a very hard copper ore, which led to the selection of an autogenous grinding flowsheet incorporating a crusher in the circuit as the preferred method for grinding this ore. Further development of the technique demonstrated that the crusher could be employed to control the product produced by an autogenous grinding unit. Description of Pilot Plant These investigations were carried out at the pilot-plant facilities of the Institute of Mineral Research, Michigan Technological University, Houghton, Mich. The autogenous grinding unit was a 6-ft-diam by 2-ft-long Hardinge Cascade mill with %-in. slotted steel grates. Pebble ports cut into the grates allowed passage of pebbles having a top size of approximately 21/2 in. The grate and pebble-port discharge material passed over a 3/16-in, trommel screen with the trommel under -size being pumped to the classification device. DSM screens were employed for classification in the early investigations, but were replaced later by a small Dorr rake classifier. The trommel oversize material returned to the mill via scissor conveyors. When the crusher was incorporated into the circuit, the trommel oversize material passed to a double-deck vibrating screen fitted with 2-in. and 3/4-in. square mesh screen cloths. The $ 2-in. and the —2 +3/4-in. size fractions were combined and crushed to a nominal 1 in. in a 4 x 6-in. jaw crusher. The crusher discharge and the —3/4-in. screen undersize returned to the mill. In the final investigation, a flap gate fitted to the top deck of the screen directed the — 21/2 +2-in. size fraction to the crusher or back to the grinding mill. The flap gate operated manually on a 15-min cycle, with this material being crushed for so many minutes out of each cycle. This was found to be a more reliable method of controlling the amount of — 21/2 +2-in. material crushed than attempting to make a split of a small weight of material on a continuous basis. Operational Techniques: Each sample was sized into three fractions and the Cascade mill feed was reconstituted from these size fractions in the proportions existing in the original sample. Sufficient feed for 15 min operation was weighed out and fed by hand over a 15-min period. The gross mill power draft was recorded every 15 min, corrected for tare power and drive efficiency, and reported as net kilowatt-hours per ton. A recording kilo-watt-hour meter provided a continuous visual record of the power drawn by the mill. Pulp densities of the trommel undersize and the classifier overflow (or DSM undersize) were taken every 15 min. The classifier overflow was sampled automatically. Timed samples of the classifier sands were taken every 15 or 30 min, weighed, and returned to the circuit. After correcting for moisture content, the weights were converted into percent circulating load. A detailed study of texture developmenf in poly crystalline copper atzd 70-30 brass has been completed. Textural changes as a function of deformation are shoum by pole jigmres and by intensity measurements oF- various rejlectiotzs from the rolling plane and the rolling direction. These examinations were accompanied by measurements of stacking fault frequency, hardness changes, and microstructure. Some of the results were briefly presented earlier. Additional results reported here are consistent with the idea that deformation faulting or slip by partial dislocations is of primary importance in the formation of deformation textures in fcc metals. lo examine the idea that deformation faulting is of primary importance in determining whether the texture is the copper type or the brass type an extensive study of the development of polycrystalline textures in copper and 70-30 brass was initiated. Besides the determination of complete pole figures, the intensities of the various reflections from both the rolling plane and the plane perpendicular to the rolling direction, the peak shifts due to deformation stacking faults, and the hardness of the rolled specimens were examined at various reductions from 10 to 99 or 99.5 pct. Mi-crostructures were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Some of the results were briefly presented in an earlier publication.' Since then, additional information has been obtained. This is given in the present paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Material and Specimen Preparation. The material used was a commercial electrolytic copper bar 1i in. wide and 2 in. thick and a 70-30 brass bar la in. wide and 1i in. thick. Chemical analysis indicated a purity of 99.97 pct for the copper, with 0.025 pct 0 as the major impurity. The 70-30 brass was of higher purity with 0.0016 pct 0 as the major impurity. Extreme care was taken in the preparation of the starting material to insure uniformly fine grains with a nearly random initial texture. The two bars were first cold-forged and then annealed to eliminate any original texture. The grains were then refined by several cold rolling (approx 30 pct reduction) and annealing treatments. The + -hr anneals were carried out in a salt bath at 390" to 440°C for copper and at 490°C for brass. The resulting penultimate grain size was 0.06 mm for copper and 0.03 mm for brass, and both showed very little preferred orientation. The number of prior cold rolling and annealing cycles was such that the final thickness after various final reductions of 10 to 95 (for brass) or 99 (for copper) pct was the same (0.020 in.). These annealed strips were rolled in two directions by reversing end for end between passes according to the following schedule: 0.006 in. per pass to 0.100 in., 0.003 in. per pass to 0.050 in., 0.002 in. per pass to 0.025 in., 0.001 in. per pass to 0.020 in. Texture Determination. The development of rolling textures was studied by examining complete pole figures determined from the (111) reflection. Specimens thinned from one face of the strip to half thickness (0.010 in.) were used to obtain the central portion of the pole figures, while specimens thinned from both faces to 0.003 in. were used to obtain the peripheral portion. The reflection and transmission techniques have been described previously. In addition to X-rav pole figures, texture development was also studied b; examining the intensity variation of the (Ill), (200), (2201, (311), (331), (420), and (442) reflections from the rolling plane and from the plane normal to the rolling direction, as a function of deformation. The same specimens used for the central portion of the pole figures were used for the intensity measurements of the various reflections from the rolling plane. For intensity measurements from the plane normal to the rolling direction, composite specimens were prepared by mounting sections cut parallel to the transverse direction of the strip. An epoxy resin was used to bond these sections together, and the entire composite was then mounted in a cold-setting resin to facilitate subsequent polishing and etching to remove distorted metal at the cut. The intensities were expressed in units of the integrated intensities measured from an annealed copper specimen having almost no preferred orientation. Stacking Fault Frequency Determination. Following the analysis of Warren: the stacking fault frequency, a, was determined from the change in the peak separation (A%) of two neighboring reflections of a deformed specimen, as compared with the normal peak separations of a fully annealed specimen. To obtain sufficient intensities for the second-order reflections, (222) and (400), composite specimens were prepared from parallel sections cut from the strip at 30 deg to the rolling direction for copper and 25 deg for the brass.* From texture data, these sections are known to contain a large population of both (111) and (200) planes. Since residual stresses can also cause X-ray line shifts (the direction of line shifts depends upon the sign of the stress), the use of composite specimens consisting of sectioned planes should help compensate for these effects as the residual stresses change sign from the surface to the central section of a rolled strip. IN analyzing the relation between the orientation of new grains and that of the deformed matrix of axially extended and recrystallized single crystals of face-centered cubic metals, a two-stage rotation process" is generally used where the first rotation is made in order to account for an "adjustment of orientation to the environment of strain."&apos; It has been argued that in spite of the difference of orientation, which may amount to as much as 12" (in a brass),&apos; between the octahedral plane as observed in the parent lattice and in the recrystallized grain, it is believed to be a common plane in the sense that it constituted the nucleus in the parent strained crystal from which the new grain grew.&apos; A possible source of the deviation in orientations of a common pole in the new grain and that of the deformed single crystal matrix from which it has grown may be found in the distribution of strain resulting from the plastic deformation. It might be expected in view of the incongruent nature of shear&apos; that the perfection of the octahedral plane along which glide has occurred is disrupted and that this disruption constitutes the strain from which nuclei of new grains can grow during recrystallization. Evidence for the existence of strain along glide planes was first detected by Taylor" in 1927 and substantiated by Collins and Mathewson&apos; in 1940. In their investigations, however, the deformed single crystalline specimens (aluminum) were cut mechanically along the glide planes followed by mechanical polishing. X-ray exposures (glancing angle) of only 8 min with filtered radiation were used. It was later shown&apos; that this type of surface preparation did not remove with all certainty the mechanically disturbed surface. It was felt that a re-investigation of this phenomenon using more refined techniques might reveal a more correct extent of the strain resulting from the deformation which might correlate the deviation of the common pole of the recrystallized grain with the acting slip plane of the matrix crystal. In accordance with these thoughts, a single crystal of a brass (70/30 nominal composition) M in. in diam x 5 in. long, tapered as in previous experiments,&apos; was extended and carefully documented with respect to elongation and shear. Disks about % in. thick paralle&apos;l to the primary slip planes were cut from the specimen by means of an etch cutter." These disks represented volumes of the specimen which had been extended 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 pct. Copper Ka monochromatic radiation was obtained by reflecting 35,000 v copper radiation from the c-cleavage face of a pentaerythritol crystal. The monochromatic radiation was collimated and led on to the disk set at the proper 0 angle for reflection from the primary (111) planes. The monochromatic beam was aligned in a plane containing the active slip direction. Following a 10 hr exposure at the theoretical Bragg angle, the disk was reset at 0 + 1°, 0 — 1", 0 + 2", 0 — 2", etc., until no Bragg reflection was obtained. The disk was then rotated 90" about its polar axis, and the same X-ray procedure was used. The results are shown in Table I. It may be seen from the results in Table I that the plastic deformation (20 pct elongation) produces fragments of the glide plane which are rotated or tilted as much as 25 " from the normal position on a purely block slip model. In addition to the large variation in 0 angle in the slip direction, there is a variation in 0 as much as 20" in the direction at right angles to the direction of slip, i.e., <110>. In view of the results shown, it may now be argued that the strain distribution finds its origin in the incongruent nature of the slip process.&apos; The use of the two-stage rotation process seems valid in attempting to explain the relation between the orientation of recrystallized grains and the matrix from which they have grown. INTRODUCTION WE have endeavored in the following "sheets" to give the unit construction costs derived from the building of the Arizona Copper Co.&apos;s new smelter, Clifton, Ariz., starting in February, 1912, and completing February, 1914. 1 In Chapter I-Unit Costs-are to be found the most elementary total unit costs which the accounts provide for. They are usable in the Clifton district. Here too are found the percentages to be added to an estimate for Engineering and General Expense. In Chapter II-Comparative Costs-these elementary costs have been classified, averaged and reported as labor and material unit costs. In such form the labor unit costs, when properly applied to similar conditions as these under which they were derived, are usable anywhere. The material unit costs are better disregarded for more accurate estimates and replaced by a newly priced bill of material. In Chapter III Composite Costs are given. Percussive drills have been in commercial use for many decades. Until relatively recently there was little serious effort to analyze the stresses in such devices in any detail. Within the last few years such analyses have been developed and have been reported by a number of authors.1-4 We present here an investigation of the impact systems of a family of conventional down-hole drills with optimization the objective. We have assumed that maximum drilling speed was the quality most desired and that this was to be achieved within conventional practice. In fact the methods that are demonstrated in principle below can readily be adapted to other percussive devices, whether conventional or not, and to other constraints. A PREVIOUS publication 1§ has described the effect of quenching stresses on the lattice parameter values of high-purity aluminum-copper alloys particularly with reference to the solution and precipitation of CuAl2. A similar study has been made of the aluminum-rich aluminum-mag-nesium alloys. Attention has been directed in the present investigation to the magnitude of the quenching stresses as affected by the specimen size and shape, the number of solute atoms and the quenching rate. The effect of cooling stresses in causing plastic deformation or cracking has been considered in relation to the physical properties of the alloy. On reheating alloys in the two-phase field, the time required for pre-cipitation to occur has been observed in connection with the degree of supersaturation, the rate of diffusion of the solute atoms as a function of the comparative atomic radii, degree of strain, temperature of reheating and grain size. A few qualitative comparisons on the relative effect of these factors have been drawn between the aluminum-copper alloys and the aluminum-magnesium alloys.

With only six small spodumene prospect pits, no detailed mapping, and no subsurface information in 1938, the Carolina lithium-pegmatite area now contains four mines among more than 25 properties on which exploratory work has been done. Even the open pit mine of Foote Mineral Co. described herein, from which ten million tons of ore and waste have been removed since 1952, was virgin ground when mapped in 1938-40 1. It has been a privilege to participate in the transition. In 1940, the spodumene pegmatites were known in a 25-mile belt (originally noted for tin prospecting) between Lincolnton, N. C. and Grover at the South Carolina line. Subsequently, Broadhurst 2 reported relatively small bodies northeast of Lincolnton near the Catawba County line. To the south, diamond drilling done in 1953 on the old Ross tin-mine property near Gaffney yielded pegmatite cores containing a few crystals of spodumene. This fact, not previously reported, suggests that some of the pyroxene in the Ross shaft as described by Sloan 3 may be spodumene.

This paper reviews the subject of gasoline margins, discusses some of the more current marketing problems, and gives some consideration to the main urges to marketing expansion, or overexpansion, in the oil industry. Margins In an earlier paper1, some comparisons were shown for the years 1929, 1930 and 1931, of the margin between the refinery cost of gasoline in Oklahoma, the market price in Oklahoma, and the average retail price in 50 representative cities of the United States. These figures indicated a small margin for the refiner in 1929 between his gasoline cost and the wholesale price, which, however, had turned into a loss by 1931. The margin between either refinery costs or wholesale prices and the retail price in the 50 cities showed a continuous decline during the three years. We have now worked out these figures on a similar basis for a longer period—from 1928 through 1936. Certain compositions of the light, i:e., aluminum-rich, alloys of aluminum with magnesium and copper have become quite well known within the past ten years under the name of duralumin. These alloys are used for rolling and forging and can be so treated as to develop quite remarkable mechanical properties. Thus a properly heat-treated alloy containing about 4 per cent. of copper and about 0.5 per cent. of magnesium, rolled into sheet or rod, will have a tensile strength of approximately 55,000 lb. per sq. in. (3866 kg. per sq. cm.) with an elongation in 2 in. (50.8 mm:) of about 15 per cent. This alloy, duralumin, was developed by Wilm,1 and its properties more fully described by Cohn.2 The authors considered it worth while to investigate the mechanical possibilities of the light alloys of two somewhat analogous ternary series; namely, of aluminum-magnesium-nickel and of aluminum-magnesium-manganese, to study the effect of variation of composition upon mechanical properties within the alumimum-rich group of the aluminum-magne-
