Autogenous batch grinding tests were performed in laboratory-scale tumbling mills with magnetite, limestone, and sandstone pebbles. The influence of pebble size, feed size, mill speed and loading, and grinding time on the fineness of grinding was investigated. Comparisons were made with the results from ball mill grinding experiments.

TO SERVE their primary function of balancing supply with demand. crude-oil prices must not only return full cost plus a reasonable earning to the efficient producer but they must also offer an additional reward to stimulate exploration sufficiently to maintain adequate reserves. High prices increase the volume and efficiency of exploration; low prig e- -Idle exploration. Over the last decade average prices for crude oil have been much lower than for the proceeding ten years, and lower even than the average over the life of industry. Under these circumstances no one should be surprised to learn that over this same recent period of discovery of new oil fields has also lagged and fallen below its average level for the previous decade. Crude oil prices have been too ion to support the required activity in wildcatting.

As can be seen from the phase diagram A1-W1 the equilibrium solubility of tungsten in aluminum is practically nil at room temperature. By quenching from the liquid state (50,000°C per sec), Varic, Burov, and Kolesnicenko2 obtained A1-W solid solutions up to 0.15 at. pct W. The quenched alloys were in the form of foils, 0.2 to 0.3 mm thick. Considering the results of Duwez and Willens,3 it is obvious that this thickness, which makes impossible a sufficiently rapid quenching, was the main reason for the relatively low content of tungsten dissolved in aluminum found by varic.2 he present note shows that the metastable solubility of tungsten in aluminum can be appreciably extended in aluminum-rich A1-W alloys. The quenching technique and the procedure employed for the preparation of the alloys have been described previously.475 The resulting quenched flakes varied in thickness from 1 to 20 µm from experiment to experiment. However, the measurements of the lattice parameters were carried out only with flakes thinner than 5 µm. The areas of quenched flakes were between 0.1 and 15 mm2. The quenched flakes were placed into a 0.3-mm glass capillary tube which was then mounted in a 114.6-mm-diam Debye-Scherrer camera. Straumanis asymmetric film position and nickel-filtered CuKa radiation were used. The lattice spacings were computed taking X(CuKa1) = 1.54050A for resolved and ?(CuKa) = 1.54178A for unresolved doublets. All specimens were rotated at room temperature, 26o +2°C. The lattice parameters were estimated from extrapolation against the Nelson-Riley function. It was estimated that the error in the lattice parameter of the measurements on a single film lies within +0.0004A for lower and about +0.001A for higher concentrations of tungsten. The lattice parameters of the metastable solid solutions A1-W are plotted vs the concentration of tungsten in Fig. 1 together with the parameters measured by previous investigators.' Each point of the present measurements represents a determination of the lattice spacing on different quenched flakes, for a given concentration of tungsten. With experimental accuracy, the lattice parameters of the metastable solid solutions fall on the straight line passing through the already known data.' As estimated from the uncertainties in the lattice spacings of the solid solutions, the alloys were homogeneous within 0.1 at. pct W. The solubility of tungsten in aluminum-rich A1-W solid solutions obtained by a very rapid quenching technique is increased to about 0.95 at. pct W. This value is 6 times greater than the amount known up to now. -he lattice parameters of the resultant aluminum solid solutions with higher concentrations of tungsten than 0.95 at. pct W did not remain constant AUGER electron spectroscopy has been used to clarify the role of impurities in the embrittlement of AISI 3340 steel. Analysis of fracture surfaces has shown that the embrittled condition is correlated with appreciable antimony segregation at grain boundaries. The low temperature (400" to 600°C) temper embrittlement of low alloy steels containing various combinations of Cr , Ni , Sb , Mn , P , Sn , and As has been examined extensively for many years. General reviews of the area have been made by McMahon1 in 1968, LOW' in 1959, woodfine3 in 1953, and Holloman4 in 1946. Samples of copper-lead concentrates from the mine of Cia Minerals Santander, Inc., a Peruvian subsidiary of the St. Joseph Lead Co. were recently subjected to special analysis. This concentrate was known to contain bismuth which, under some circumstances, might have incurred a smelter penalty. In this case, customers for the concentrate accepted it and requested a higher concentration of bismuth. Although chemical analysis would disclose the presence of the metal, it was not possible with equipment available at the mill in Peru to determine the mode of occurrence in the fine grained ores.

IN the four mills of the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corp. in Peru, some 3000 tons of complex sulphide ores are treated daily, with four kinds of concentrates produced: copper, lead, zinc, and pyrite, each containing values in silver, gold, bismuth, and some other metals. Copper occurs in the various ores as chalcopyrite, enargite, tetrahedrite, tenantite, bournonite, and chalcocite; lead as galena; and zinc as sphalerite and marmatite. Small amounts of silver and tungsten minerals are also present. The gangue consist mainly of shale, quartzite, calcite, rhodochrosite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. In general the values are freed with a relatively coarse grind, about 70 prr cent minus 200 mesh being the finest to which the pulps are ground. In Morococha and Casapalca however. sphalerite particles much finer than this contain inclusions of chalcopyrit r. At Cerro de Pasco the silver and gold are present in all sizes of the ground pyrite.

This article gives an account of the latest developments in the use of TBE for sink-float separation of silicate minerals. A number of minerals for which the process has been tested and found suitable are reviewed. Specific examples are discussed in relation to the particular problems of sink-float separation and recovery of TBE as compared with non-silicate minerals. The economic aspects are outlined. Silica and silicates comprise the most common and abundant group of minerals, and since they are present in variable amounts in most ores, they constitute an appropriate subject for the review and discussion of the recent developments in the use of TBE for mineral concentration. The silicates considered as a group have an extremely wide range of chemical and physical properties. Some of these properties, which are common to all minerals, are of importance to concentration by TBE and are discussed in some detail in this paper, as well as the development of methods and apparatus for concentration and recovery of TBE and several examples of concentration of silicates. PROPERTIES OF MINERALS WITH RESPECT TO CONCENTRATION BY TBE The properties considered as most important to concentration by TBE are specific gravity, structure, surface and shape. The specific gravity of a mineral is a fundamental property and is constant between very close limits for the same species of different sources if particles are pure and free from cavities or cracks. In many species, however, solid inclusions and changes in chemical composition due to replacement of elements cause variations in the specific gravity. The plagio-clase series of feldspars between albite and anorthite illustrate this point (specific gravity from 2.60 to 2.77). Fig. 1 shows the specific gravity distribution of some of the common silicate minerals.' The highest specific gravity is about 4.7 (zircon) and the lowest is 2.0 (sepiolite), with most of them ranging between 2.6 and 3.5. Although most of the silicates given in Fig. 1 are found as constituents of rocks, those generally considered as rock making minerals are comparatively few. They include quartz, feldspars, nephelite, sodalite, leucite, mica, pyroxenes, amphiboles, chrysolite, kaolin, talc and serpentine. These minerals may appear in igneous rocks as coarse crystals in granites, syenites and diorites or as very fine grained dispersions in basalt and felsite. When the latter rocks occur in an ore, their specific gravities depend on the minerals present and structure. The same is true for the sedimentary and metamorphic rocks (sandstones, shales, gneiss, slate, schists). A comparison of specific gravities for the minerals listed in Fig. 1 with that of TBE (see Table I) shows that the important rock-forming minerals, with the exception of pyroxenes, amphiboles and chrysolite (olivine), lie in the specific gravity range of less than 2.96 and can therefore be separated by TBE. The ore structure is important both in determining the apparent specific gravity and the efficiency of TBE recovery. The structure can be compact (as in

Dolomite-fluxed pellets of various compositions were made from magnetite concentrate, hematite concentrate and a concentrate containing a natural mixture of both. Physical properties and reduction test results were used to ascertain proper compositions and firing temperatures. These pellets were subjected to physical tests and to reduction tests. Petrographic and electron microprobe examinations were made to evaluate the effect of composition and fining on the phase assemblage. We interpreted our test results in terms of chemistry and microstructure and related these to properties. This approach enabled w to determine the composition best suited to each of the three concentrates. Compared with acid pellets, dolomite- fluxed pellets of the optimum compositions had similar physical properties but swelled less, softened at a higher temperature, and reduced faster and more completely.

Sponsored by the Utah Section of AIME, the 1960 Annual Rocky Mountain Minerals Conference brought more than 500 members of the mineral industry to the conference rooms of the Newhouse Hotel in Salt Lake City during the period October 5 to October 7. Under the overall supervision of J. M. Ehrhorn, general chairman, and H. E. Wright, assistant general chairman, the Conference offered 14 papers of technical interest in four sessions during the first two days, and it culminated in the Exploration Symposium held on the morning of October 7. The opening session of the Conference, meeting on the morning of October 5, heard R. P. Work, utility engineer of the Mountain Fuel Supply Co., discuss the growth and economic factors related to the use of natural gas in Utah. In his paper entitled Natural Gas Market In Utah, Mr. Work emphasized the very good prospects of natural gas serving almost all parts of that state. He mentioned that recently the El Paso pipeline, built to serve the Pacific Northwest with gas from Texas, has permitted natural gas to be available to Eastern Utah, and a tentatively planned pipeline from Green River, Wyo. to Southern California will bring natural gas to the central and southeast areas of the state.
