"Butte is in many ways an ideal location for a mining school. The student lives in the atmosphere of his intended profession. By the time he has spent four years at the school and in the community he has a fairly clear idea of what kind of a business he is entering upon, and is freed from any illusions about its being a primrose path he is about to follow. The mines and mills and smelters are his lecture rooms in part, and the shovel, pick and drill form part of his equipment. Most of the students work in the mines during part of their school life, which serves the double purpose of assisting them financially and increasing their practical knowledge.The School of Mines is a state institution, amply endowed and exceptionally well equipped. The school is strictly technical and no attempt is made to prepare men for any other work but mining engineering. The mining men of the community take an active interest in the welfare of the school and are of much assistance in securing employment for its graduates.The teaching staff is entirely composed of men who have had practical, commercial experience in their various specialties, and no expense is spared in securing suitable men for the faculty."

IN planning retreatment of tailings, the material to be retreated should be thoroughly investigated, tak- ing into consideration the total tonnage, the blende content, the specific gravity of the different particles, and the grinding necessary to liberate the mineral. The tailing pile is surveyed by making a closed trav-erse around the outer edges, locating the stations at points from which a considerable portion of the pile is visible. From each of these points the pile is sur-veyed by stadia and a contour map made. The yardage is then calculated from the contour interval and the area inclosed by the contours obtained with a planim-eter. A party of three men can survey an average tailing pile in one and one-half, days. In calculating tonnage it is assumed that 22 cu. ft. of tailing in place equal one ton. Sampling is done by the use of an auger with casing to prevent the hole from caving. These holes may be bored 12 to 15 ft. deep by hand, but to penetrate the entire pile some kind of power is applied to drive the casing and raise or lower the auger. The latter method is more expensive but the increased cost is more than compensated for by the value of the information obtained.

THERE are few natural monopolies comparable with the nitrate industry. Perhaps the only other one is, curiously enough, also an essential fertilizer material, viz., potash, of which the Germans have heretofore held practically a-monopoly due to the existence in their territory of the most important known deposits of potash salts. And although nitrates in minute amounts are found in many desert regions, the only deposits callable of being worked commercially exist in Chile. Combined nitrogen in the oxidized form is an essential for plant life. Nature provides it mainly through the agency of nitrogen-fixing bacteria. But where lands are cropped artificially this supply is too small; and gradually the nitrogen supply becomes exhausted. In order to continue farming, it is necessary to furnish a supply of nitrogenous plant food, and this is clone by putting on various substances containing combined nitrogen. These consist of various animal wastes, ammonium sulphate, the ammonia of which is obtained in the destructive distillation of coal, and Chile saltpeter. The latter is immediately available as a plant food, the nitrogen being in the required form. The other substances must oxidize before they are available. Besides its use as a fertilizer, Chile saltpeter is the source from which the bulk of the nitric acid of commerce is derived. The use of nitric acid in the manufacture of almost, all modern explosives is, of course, well known.

Mining examinations are of several kinds and the scope of the investigation depends in each case upon the purpose for which the examination is made. A formal examination of a developed mine is an expensive undertaking; from one to several months are allowed for the work according to the size of the property; many samples are taken; investigation is made of the geological features, including, perhaps, a topographical and geological survey of the surface; the metallurgical treatment of the ore is studied; finally, a determination of costs is demanded. Formal examinations are made for prospective purchasers or as a basis for the consolidation of several properties, and occasionally, in the owner's behalf, to verify the work of resident engineers, or to determine the readiness of a mine for equipment and the kind and capacity of equipment it shall receive. A formal examination of a mine should not be undertaken until a preliminary examination has shown that it is justified. It is regrettable that some engineers are in the habit of prosecuting long and exhaustive examinations of properties whose lack of merit should be, and perhaps is, apparent from the start, or of continuing their investigation long after an unfavorable result is seen to be inevitable. This wasting of a client's money is a species of trickery difficult to prove, and therefore the more contemptible. CONDITIONS in underground mining are so variable that in approach-ing the problem of the economies effected by the use of pressure-treated mine ties and mine timbers, it is necessary to secure specific data for each mine. Facts must first be dug out to show the service life of untreated timber and the reason for its failure. Generally speaking, decay is the usual cause of failure, but in some mines mechanical destruction is an important factor. Occasionally the two causes combine to produce fail-ures, and it is difficult to determine positively which factor is responsible. In making comparisons, it is always necessary to start with the cost in place and for this reason there must be accurate information covering the labor cost of installation and the labor cost of renewals. When treated timber is used, it is necessary to know the specifications for the treating process, whether the timber was painted, dipped, treated open tank, or impregnated under pressure according to standard specifica-tions. It is also necessary to know the preservative used and the amount of the preservative that was retained by the timber after treatment. It is also well to know whether the timber was thoroughly air-seasoned before treatment or was green at the time it was treated. The kind of timber available, both untreated and treated, must be known and all of the factors listed above must be taken into consideration in the study of any problem.

A simple and inexpensive clay imprint core orienting device has been developed by Dr. R. D. Call. It has a minimum of moving parts, is durable and easily used by drillers, and adds only 15 minutes to a core run. Conventional wire-line drilling and a drill hole inclined 30° to 60° from the horizontal plane are required. The device will not operate in a vertical hole. The orientor is an eccentrically weighted downhole device which can be constructed in a mine shop from an old inner core barrel and lead. Modeling clay is packed in the core lifter case, which is screwed on the downhole end of the orientor. A clay imprint of the bottom of the hole is taken after each coring run. This imprint is matched to the top of the succeeding core run, the drill core is pieced together, and a reference line representing the drill hole is scribed on each core. Fracture attitudes are measured relative to the reference line and the core axis. On recent drilling projects, tests for imprint reproducibility were conducted. The results of these tests show an average variation of f3" in location of the scribed reference line between imprints. Comparisons of surface mapping data with oriented core data are good. It is rare that the entire length of drill core in intensely fractured zones can be oriented because it is impossible to piece the core together. However, if a triple tube set-up is used, a modification in the scribing procedure can result in a good statistical sampling of the fracture population. Attitudes of major structures have been oriented with this technique.

Because no rock outcrops exist in the Cuyuna district, it is necessary first to make a magnetic survey with a dip needle, or possibly with a sun-dial compass, and determine the area or belt of magnetic variations and the maximum lines of magnetic attraction. A dip-needle survey is quicker to make, is sufficiently accurate, and will suffice. Regardless of how poorly defined the magnetic attractions may be, it is important that they be determined. Even if drilling has developed ore on an adjoining property, the survey should not be omitted. Iron-bearing formation is indicated by the magnetic attractions, but whether or not ore exists must be determined by drilling. The maximum line of magnetic attraction offers the best place to begin drilling. If no magnetic attraction exists, nearby developments are the only guide; and if these also are lacking, drilling is governed by guess. Test-pitting is not employed in exploratory work because the surface is too deep. Tunneling cannot be used because the topography is not suitable. Exploration shafts are a waste of time and expense, because from every standpoint drilling with churn and diamond drills is the most applicable method for exploratory work. Light drilling equipment only is needed. Rarely have heavier drills been required, for seldom do holes exceed 400 ft. in depth, and about 100 ft. of this is in glacial drift which is easy to penetrate. The deepest hole is 1023 ft. Because of the steep inclination of the strata and the narrowness of the orebodies, many angle holes have been drilled, mostly at 60' to 70" from the horizontal and against the dip of the formation. Angle holes are most advisable. If after initial drilling the beds are of shallow dip, vertical holes or holes of any angle can be used. The total cost of drilling a property is much greater if only vertical holes are used because more holes must be drilled to obtain the requisite information than when angle holes are used. Many tests for variation in angularity of a finished hole have seldom shown more than 2'; therefore, such tests may with safety be abandoned. Because the orebodies are generally about 100 ft. wide and cross a 40-acre tract at a slight angle, and as the dips are usually about 70"

Controlled pre-grouting is a technique developed during a period of more than ten Years experience, in an effort to produce safer, drier and more economical mine shaft sinking. The technique involves a knowledge Of hydro-mechanics, both static and dynamic, and a series of specially formulated grout mixtures to obtain several desired results through precontrolled setting time. In general, the following procedures have been used to secure the best results in controlled pre-grouting: I. Before drilling is commenced, One Of two decisions is made: one procedure, a modified form of the Francois method, is to stage drill and grout, that is, drill a limited portion of the hole, then grout and redrill that section which has been grouted, progressing in stages until the required depth is reached. We prefer this method because no casing Or grouting packers are required in the bore hole. This eliminates the risk of losing them in the bore hole due to packer failure, which might result in the expense of drilling a new grout hole. Another feature Of this approach is that smaller drill holes may be effectively used, further reducing the costs. One drawback, however, is that because of the open and small size hole, it is impractical to attempt water draw-down tests. The second alternative is to drill the bore hole, (generally NX size), to the re-quire~ depth. he casing and grouting packer are placed in the bore hole at the lowest packer setting. A small, portable, power driven, swabbing device is used in the grouting casing to test the packer and remove mud or cuttings from the bore hole below the packer. The hydrostatic level is recorded and a close estimate or test is made of the quantity of water at each packer setting. Grouting progresses upward in a series of packer settings to the surface. Occasionally, casing is inserted in the bot-tom of the bore hole from within the mine, and water pressure and volume can be obtained in this manner. This is usually dangerous because of the unknown quantity of water. 2. The grouting, mining and geological engineers at the drill location make a detailed examination of the cores and also locate proper and firm grouting packer locations. Many of them are veterans of World War II and the question is raised in their minds as to whether or not to go back into military service. There is time to think about this question now and it is advisable to do so in order that snap decisions may be avoided if war is declared.

WHAT IS SAMPLING? We are all involved in sampling almost every day of our lives, by tasting, feeling, or smelling. Most raw materials, food products or manufactured items are sampled several times at various stages of the production process before a commodity of suitable quality can be produced. Data obtained from sampling is used in establishing price, quality control, allocating production costs, or overall process efficiency. The area of sampling outlined in this article is the collection of a small quantity of material from large continuous bulk flows of solids and slurries. The concern in obtaining the sample is that the material obtained is truly representative of the main flow in every respect. The methods and equipment outlined are for the collection of a manageable sample. The sample has to be analyzed in a laboratory to determine its characteristics and compliance to set standards. SELECTING A SAMPLING SYSTEM When selecting a sampling system, it is essential to define the requirements, as to what the actual sample obtained will be used for and what degree of precision is required. Determine whether or not the system has to comply with any set standards such as A.S.T.M. (American Society for Testing and Materials) which have established methods for collection of a gross sample of coal. Sampling which is done for in-plant or process control is not generally governed by set procedures, but similar care should be taken during the selection process so that when the equipment is put into service it will operate reliably and produce a sample which is truly representative of the total material lot or consignment.

Henry M. Howe, Bedford Hills, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary.)*—Mr. Johnson's explanation, that the rounding of the graphite masses in oxygen-bearing cast iron is due to their being in part reprecipitated after re-solution in forming carbonic oxide temporarily with.that oxygen, is certainly most attractive and suggestive. It remains to be shown whether this rounding occurs also when the solidification is too rapid to permit this process to go on. J. E. Johnson might easily test this by casting a single ladleful of his oxygenated iron in masses of varying size. If this present hypothesis is true, then the rounding ought to increase progressively with the size of the casting, and with the distance from the outside, that is to say with the time available for re-solution and reprecipitation. I question whether a like benefit is to be expected even on this hypothesis, from the oxygenation of steel. The spheroidizing of graphite does good because graphite itself is so weak. But the constituent which can be spheroidized in steel is its cementite, which is a source of strength. Lamellar pearlite, in which this cementite in effect forms long den-drites, is far stronger than divorced pearlite, in which these dendrites have been broken up into spheroids. Even the surfaces of contact between ferrite and cementite are probably sources of strength because of the amorphous iron which probably fills them.

WHEN a hole is made in a stressed solid, such as rock pierced by mine openings, equilibrium of the solid is destroyed. To re-establish that equilibrium the stress condition in the rock surrounding the opening becomes rearranged. This rearrangement may or may not develop local stresses in the vicinity of the opening which exceed the elastic strength of the rock. Since stability of the opening depends, therefore, on the strength of the naturally occurring rock surrounding the opening, this rock is an engineering material of construction, and all rock affected by the associated opening or system of open- ings may be considered a structure. The term invert is chosen to describe the formation of the structure —built from the inside, as it were, and a consequence of mining rather than an entity built for a purpose. By definition, an invert structure is formed when openings are made underground and is composed of that material on the solid side of a rock-air interface wherein the stress condition is affected by the associated opening or system of openings. The shape of an invert structure is never clearly defined; the skin of the structure may be mapped, and even described, but the boundary of the structure within the solid rock mass must be arbitrarily set. The name geomechanics is proposed to describe a branch of scientific knowledge which will encompass principles and working hypotheses for behavior and design of invert structures. Discussion of the paper of Max Hebgen, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 80, August, 1913, pp. 1910 to 1933. A MEMBER :-Have there been any definite studies made in the hydrology of this system ? That is to say, what is the total extent and area of the drainage or catchment basin above these plants ? What is the total annual precipitation, and what is the percentage of run off ? That is a very interesting question to engineers and a question engaging a great many, because, unfortunately, there is not the amount of information on that subject which there ought to be.

The information which is required for' a preliminary feasibility study and the additional information which is required for the final feasibility study on a new mineral deposit are discussed. The preliminary feasibility study is made from very little information and at a minimum cost to the owner. However, the outline for the preliminary report is similar to the one used in the final report. In this manuscript, it is assumed that the results from the preliminary study are favorable and the owner authorizes a final feasibility study by an outside engineering company. The type of organization for completing this final feasibility study is described. The final reports includes all information and data relative to this new mineral deposit. This information is presented so that it may be understood by financial people as well as by technical people.

IN the field of mineral exploration, 1956 can be looked upon as the International Geochemical Year. This is not because of unusual developments in geochemical prospecting but rather because of the world-wide effort in geochemistry and the realization that geochemistry is now an established exploration method. Use of mining geophysics has continued to increase. Those extensively employing exploration techniques indicate that developments of the past few years have permitted better programming of methods, from reconnaissance to location of drill- holes. There is greater diversification of methods- reliance is not placed on results of one. However, it is realized that often it is more economical to drill an anomaly than to conduct additional expensive geophysical surveys

IN striking contrast to American mining engineering schools, in Europe a new president, known as the Rektor Magnificus, is elected each year or alternate year. An exception is Italy, where election is for a period of three years. The Rektor, who is elected by the full professors, must also be a professor and full-time member of the faculty. In most cases there is a Senate, composed of 5 to 14 full professors, some elected and some appointed, which controls the Rektor in policy decisions, but in some institutions there is no such controlling body. In the same way deans for each faculty or college are selected at the same intervals from among the full professors concerned.

TOQUEPALA is a porphyry copper deposit in which mineralization is localized by a large breccia pipe formed in dose genetic relation to intrusive rocks. The deposit is in southern Peru, 55 airline miles north of the small city of Tacna and the same distance inland from the port of 110. Quellaveco and Cuajone, geologically similar deposits, lie 12 and 19 miles north of Toquepala. Chuquicamata is 400 miles to the south. The deposit is high on the southwestern slope about 20 miles from the crest of the Cordillera Occidental of the Andes Chain. It lies in a mountainous desert where the steep southwesterly slope of the Andes is dissected by a succession of rapidly downcutting, deep canyons. Local topography is moderately rugged with a dendritic drainage pattern and an elevation of 8000 to 14,000 ft. Volcanic peaks along the crest of the Cordillera rise over 19,000 ft.

To the layman, the term "strip mining" usually applies to the appearance of mined-over land after an operation is completed, not to the technique. This attitude, however, is becoming pass6 in the central Florida pebble phosphate field as eight mining companies in the area pursue a mutual program of land reclamation. The Florida phosphate industry is fortunate in this respect because it occupies an area favorable to reclamation. The terrain is flat; overburden is sand and clay which will support vegetation fairly readily; a high ground water table naturally converts mine pits into lakes. Too, this is water which readily supports marine life, not the acidic water so frequently found in the coal industry.
