Percolation infers the passage of a liquid through, the interstices of any material or materials permitting it. Leaching is the process of extracting soluble matter by percolation. Lixiviation is analogous to leaching. Percolation and leaching may occur simultaneously. A filter may be used either to strain suspended or finely divided matter from a liquid, when it is known as a clarifier, or to separate a liquid from a solid. Clarification usually infers the addition d: some settling or flocculating agent which permits the decantation of the clear supernatant liquor. The simple separation of solid from liquid, such as occurs when a thickened flotation concentrate is filtered, is usually termed dewatering. The word filtration is used more to cover the complex process of separating, as far as possible, solid from liquid by vacuum or pressure, removing the residual solution by wash, and at the same time leaching any recrystallized, absorbed, or undissolved matter, by percolation with the solvent. The final product of metallurgical treatment should be reported as a recovery when the yield is refined metal. When the metallurgical operations are incomplete and a concentrated but not refined-product is obtained, the metal content should be reported as an extraction.

The hacienda Sauceda is one of the largest and finest haciendas in the vicinity of the City of Zacatecas, Mexico, and is said to reduce ores by the Patio process more cheaply than any other establishment. It receives its supply of ore from the San Acacio mine. This mine has been for some time, like most of the Zacatecas mines, out of bonanza, and yields, at present, ore of rather low grade. The silver occurs principally as silver-glance, ruby-silver and native silver, associated with pyrites of iron and copper, and some galena and zinc-blende, in a gangue of pure quartz, which takes the form of amythyst whenever the ore is of high grade. All the ore, as it comes from the mine, is broken by hand into small pieces, and sorted before it is delivered to the hacienda. Here it is first crushed dry in Chili mills, and then ground wet in arrastras to an impalpable powder. The sulphurets not decomposed in the patio process are separated in the settlers from the tailings and concentrated by hand. By roasting them in a reverberatory furnace with carbonate copperores, "magistral" is obtained. All machinery is driven by mulepower.

Visitors frequently put the question to Kalgoorlie gold miners; "Why don't you concentrate your mining operations?" A mine may be drawing ore from over a hundred different working places which are spread out over several thousand feet of strike and on many different levels. The answer to this question is that "finished" can rarely be written for a section of the mine. The intricate web of mineralization in faults, shears and fractures is an endless puzzle, each solution opens up new avenues to be explored. After the last ore is taken from a stope, a program of drilling may continue for several weeks on different possibilities. Perhaps no ore is discovered and drilling is abandoned, but it is not unusual for another search to begin later in that same area on a new theory with successful results. Wherever a slightly richer mineralization is found, it is needed to "sweeten" the mill heads. Over seventy years ago gold was discovered in the dry wastes of Western Australia. Rich deposits of alluvial gold were found at first and as these were worked out they led to the discovery of the lode ores, which were leaner and harder to extract.

Field experience in uranium has shown it is most economical to ram through a drilling program to obtain maximum footage per drill hour. Drift surveys can then determine the course of the holes. Using this method is generally cheaper than paying the additional cost involved in using the drilling technique and equipment necessary to maintain straight holes. Factors Affecting Direction of Bit Travel: In all rotary-drilled holes there is an interplay of forces or conditions affecting the direction of bit travel. Rarely is a straight vertical hole obtained. One of the major factors is weight on a drill string. In looking at a joint of drill stem it is hard to imagine its being quite flexible, but flexing of the steel increases when many joints are made up together, and even a slight weight added to the upper portion causes a buckling or spiraling effect in the hole. The result is that the bit deviates from the vertical.

This plant was built in 1907 at the Bankhead mines to manufacture briquettes by the Zwoyer process under license from the Zwoyer Fuel Co., of New York, N. Y. The building was constructed to contain two units, each of a capacity of 10 tons per hr.; one unit was installed at the time the building was constructed, and the second unit is now being built. The coal used is an anthracite, which is more friable than that of Pennsylvania, and, as a consequence, a larger percentage of dust or waste is produced, which was formerly thrown upon the slack-pile as waste, but is now passed to the ? dust-bin " in the breaker, from which it is conveyed to the briquette-plant.

THE Columbia Steel Corporation, organized in 1922, and taken over by the United States Steel Corporation on Feb. l, 1930, is operating one blast furnace at Ironton, Utah, which was started on April 30, 1924, and is producing approximately 14,000 tons of pig iron per month. Half of the pig iron produced is basic iron and is used in its own plants at Pittsburg and Torrance, Cal. The ore for the blast furnace is shipped from Desert Mound, Utah, near Cedar City, in the southern part of the' State, approximately 231 miles from Iroaton. The ore is a hematite, disseminated with magnetite, the chemical analysis showing approximately 12 to 20 per cent magnetite, and under the micro- scope the ore has the appearance of a magnetite.

Fracture tests were conducted on subsize specimens of Charcoal granite to demonstrate that the extent of the nonlinear region at the crack tip can be significant. The model of the fracture process considers an effective crack length as a traction free portion plus a process zone where closing stresses act; this zone is identified by microcracking and interlocking. A singularity is allowed at the effective crack tip. The effective stress intensity factor is the superposition of the stress intensities due to the effective crack and the process zone. By assuming that the closing stress is a linear function, it is shown that a process zone length of approximately one-third the effective crack is needed to match the compliance-determined crack length.

It is of importance to analysts to have a ready means of detecting the presence of small quantities of titaninm in iron ores and in certain fluxes and slags. The method given in Elderhorst's Blowpipe Analysis (fusion with potassium hydrogen sulphate) requires considerable practice, in order so to regulate the heat that the titanium oxide shall become soluble. In Brash's Determinative Mineralogy is found a method which, at least in inexperienced hands, has given better results, i. e., fusion of the substance to be tested with sodium carbonate on charcoal in the reducing flame. The solution in hydrochloric acid of the bead thus obtained, boiled with tin or zinc, gives the characteristic violet color; but when the mineral contains less than four per cent. of titanium oxide, long boiling and consequent concentration is necessary. In fact the test would seem to be much less delicate than is generally supposed. In the course of some analyses I quite accidentally found that a peculiar color is given to turmeric paper by solutions of titanium chloride. This color is hard to describe, being modified by the quantity of ferric chloride present in the solution ; but it is neither the orange of zirconia nor the red of' boron. It is rather a dull shade of purple, arid is easily recognized when the paper is dried, although the color fades in a few hours. By this means a solution containing .015 per cent. of titanium oxide can easily be tested. The same solution, treated with tin, required to be concentrated to one-tenth its bulk before a decided color could be obtained. The color given to turmeric paper is intensified after the solution has been treated with tin. This and some other indications show that the best shade of color is given by the titanons chloride rather than by the titanic chloride, and no other salt of titanium than the chloride has been found to give the color. Another peculiar property of titanium salts has come tinder my observation. When titaniferous minerals are soluble in nitric acid, and the solution is subjected to the action of the battery, the soluble titanium salt is converted into the insoluble oxide and appears on the electrode, in some cases, as a white coating; this

IT IS universal practice for corporations, at the end of the fiscal period, to call in a firm of chartered accountants to audit the books. The effect of this is to put an independent organization's seal of approval on the accounting of the business done by the management. Their report lets the stockholders know that the accounts rendered truly present the results of the year's business. This is as it should be; the average stockholder has no personal contact or even acquaintance with the managers of his enterprise and the approval of their stewardship by an indepen-dent agent is very desirable for maintaining confidence in their honesty and ability. But such an examination deals only with what may be called the arithmetic of the business; even the most elaborate audit, as the practice is at present, goes no further than to verify the items of the inventory. In other words, while checking up the entries showing the transaction's of the year and certifying to the correct-ness of the items of the balance sheet, such a report gives the stockholder no idea of the ability with which his affairs have been managed. If the profit and loss balance is satisfactory, as certified by the public accountants, he assumes that the management has been able; where it is not, he turns to the president's report and usually finds an explanation. Such an explanation never takes the form of admission of mis-takes in business judgment or of bad technical manage-ment. It could hardly be expected that it would. The stockholder is generally furnished, therefore, with a certificate of the honesty of his management, but never one of its ability. He does not worry about the latter as long as dividends come in; when they cease, his action generally finds expression in replacing the management. In other words, so long as profits are realized, he assumes the management to be good, even though its success is a matter beyond its control and better management would make larger profits. When there is no profit, the stockholders have no means of knowing whether it is due to conditions beyond the control of the management, as the annual report is sure to allege, or whether, by better management, profit is possible. Here is where the technical audit comes in.

Barite deposits are of widespread occurrence in Nevada but there are few producing properties; most of the latter are in northern Nevada. The production of the state is small at present-in the neighborhood of 15,000 tons annually-but is steadily increasing. The barite occurs in veins and also as replacement deposits in limestone. The bulk of the production has come from the replacement deposits. It is thought that the barite was deposited from rising hot waters similar to-and probably contemporaneous with-those responsible for some of the metallic ores of the state. This paper discusses only the deposits in northern Nevada. THE commercial mining of barite did not begin in Nevada until 1916 but although the production has been small there has been a rapid increase in tonnage during the past several years. Barite is widely distributed in the state and production comes from at least nine of the seventeen counties. Apparently this is not generally known, as only two counties are mentioned in a recent publication6 dealing with barite. The increase in output is due largely to recently discovered barite deposits in northern Nevada. The principal production has come from the northern portions of Lander and Eureka counties; smaller amounts from Elko County. The discussion in this paper is confined largely to the deposits in these counties. Most of the producing area is tributary to the Western Pacific and Southern Pacific Railroads, whose tracks lie along the Humboldt River. Barite is known from other northern counties but so far the production has been small. The output has come entirely from veins and replacement deposits, the latter largely in sedimentary rocks. In general, the barite from veins is white; that from the replacement deposits usually is dark gray to black, although some is light gray or white. Most of the veins contain sulphides and many barite-bearing veins have been worked for their content of base or precious metals. In the theoretical study of metallurgical reactions, it is necessary to make certain assumptions concerning the nature of metal-gas systems. The assumption usually made is that the reaction in such systems takes place predominantly with gas that is in "solution" and that the amount of solution follows the rules which have been developed for aqueous solutions; namely, Henry's law. The purpose of this paper is to inquire whether these assumptions are the best ones that present knowledge of gas-metal systems permits us to make. In the first part the extent to which a gas will dissolve in a metal and still follow Henry's law is considered. The conclusion is believed justified that the number of molecules of gas that can dissolve in a metal and have the system follow Henry's law must be small indeed. It is therefore improbable that the first assumption concerning the predominance of these dissolved molecules in reaction is correct. It is suggested that some improvement in the correlation of the probabilities with the assumptions made in the mass law equations would be made by the use of the dp law of Sieverts in place of Henry's law. However, the amount of gas that may be held in a metal so that it follows either Henry's or Sieverts' law is considerably outweighed in most metallurgical reactions by that held in gas-metal systems of entirely different structures and concerning which little experimental evidence is available. Some speculation concerning the nature of these is offered. The conclusion is that attention should be given to the determining of the nature of gas-metal systems and that the really fruitful application of the mass law and its connected calculations will have to await a more complete knowledge of these systems than we now possess. Owin to its isolation and comparatively small tonnage, the Yoquivo district is not widely known; though financially important andgeologically, quite interesting. San Francisco de Yoquivo, the center of the mining district, is in the western part of the state of Chihuahua, Mexico; about 35 miles west of San Juanito, on the Kansas City, Mexico & Orient R. R. The town can be reached from the railroad by a good trail over a rugged country. The elevation of Yoquivo is 6500 ft., and peaks surrounding the town are 2000 ft. higher. The mining towns of Concheño and Ocampo are 25 miles northwest, and Uruachic is 20 miles southwest. The climate, temperate and healthful, is almost ideal. The rainy season begins in July and ends the latter part of September. There is usually, though not always, some precipitation in all months except April, May, and June. The mountains are covered with pine and scrub oak. Water, wood and lumber are plentiful for all ordinary purposes, and hydroelectric power is available for about six months of the year, when wood for steam power is utilized as an expedient. The district has been worked recurrently for over 60 years. The Yoquivo province lies on the steep western slope of the Tara-humara division of the Sierra Madre range of mountains. The province is traversed by many deep canyons, most of which flow west. The town is situated on the San Francisco arroyo, which makes a confluence with the Huevachic stream 236 m. southwest; the Huevachic in turn joins the Candemeña river farther down and these two drain the western flank of the Tarahumara mountains and form the headwaters of the Mayo river. The claims of the Yocluivo Development Co., which is the only organization in the district with a record of any considerable production, lie within an area roughly l½ m. square. Thc area extends from the San Francisco arroyo north, and from the Dolores arroyo west, and is confined to the andesite formation. By means of top-slicing methods, wide veins, masses, or thick beds of soft ore may be mined, where the caving of the overburden is of no consequence. The ore is mined in a series of horizontal floors or slices, taken in descending order, from the top of the deposit. Each floor is mined in small sections, the roof of each section being allowed or forced to cave before an adjacent section is attacked. MILTON L. LISSBERGER, ? New York, N. Y.-Solder is a mechanical mixture of tin and lead, a fact which is susceptible of very simple demonstration. A bar of solder of a grade even as low as 30 per cent. tin and 70 per cent. lead, passed through a buffing machine, will show a surface practically identical with that of a bar of second-quality or reclaimed tin. The buffings, on chemical analysis, will prove to be almost pure lead. According to the best practice, solder is made in the following manner. Virgin pig lead is first melted, and when it is thoroughly liquefied, virgin pig tin is added, together with a small amount of flux; the latter is for the purpose of bringing to the surface the so-called "liver," consisting of impurities that may have remained in either the lead or the tin as a result of incomplete refining. The combined material, when completely liquid, is thoroughly stirred for some hours, and is then cast into small pigs. Just before casting, and continuously during this operation, the molten metal yields dross, consisting largely of the oxides of lead and tin; this should be carefully skimmed off. After the pigs have cooled, they are taken to a smaller kettle, remelted, and cast into the desired shape for use; or if wires, ribbons, etc., are to be made, the solder is cast into slugs suitable for extrusion and rolling. During this second operation, the skimming of dross should be even more carefully done than at first. Hand mixing has proved to be the only reliable method for the production of the best quality of solder, irrespective of its percentages of lead and tin. The best quality of solder is not necessarily that which contains the highest percentage of tin, but rather is that composition which performs best on the required piece of work. In order to produce

Discussion of the paper of Norman B. Braly, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 80, August, 1913, pp. 1881 to 1906. GEORGE A. PACKARD, Butte, Mont.:-I would like to ask Mr. Braly if he has any information as to the relative efficiency of the sinking pump, using it as he refers to it, discharging the exhaust into the water column or otherwise. MR. BRALY :-I have never gathered any information on that point. It is a question of getting the work done. In driving the shaft, using that method, we find it easier on the men and everything else. In the bottom of the shaft, if you exhaust back into your column, it is a quiet. shaft. Another thing is the freezing: if you are sinking with air in your pump, you will find it is liable to freeze, and in that case as the air is still under compression it will not freeze the pump. The difference is very small if there is any. But, as might be expected, the pump is a little less efficient when exhausting the air into the column. MR. PACKARD :-I suppose all of us know what a pump in the bottom of the shaft is. My experience has been, although I have no figures, that the capacity of a pump is quite considerably decreased if you are pumping, say, from a depth of 200 ft. through a No. 7 Knowles pump, when you exhaust the air into a column, but, on the other hand, it is also my impression that we can raise the water to a little greater distance. I would like to get some figures from somebody who has made actual tests.

In general, many problems relating to the exploitation of mineral deposits are probabilistic in nature. This derives from the fact that the geologic universe is inherently random. Probability theory and statistics have been found useful for forecasting the behavior of natural events that occur in the geologic universe. The objective of this paper is to outline the application of the theory of extremes to this forecasting problem. Consider the design of an underground structure or the design of a rock slope. The initial step is the formulation of the various possible structural actions which result from the geometry of the layout. For a given structural model, various intensities of behavior are possible depending upon the load, deformation, and material characteristic spectra, respectively. Of popular interest to mining people is the failure behavior or condition. A necessary feature of the analysis is the rupture strength of the material. Information on the rupture strength is derived from testing either in situ or in the laboratory and the usual outcome is a variation in the test results. This variation is overcome by constructing a frequency distribution of rupture strengths, and then determining a measure of central tendency and variability. The main feature of interest in the analysis is the failure characteristic and its percentage chance of occurrence. Hence, one is naturally led to examine those areas of a distribution curve which are termed the tails. The statistical concepts which can most efficiently handle such areas are contained within extreme value statistics.

There is a basic need for the health and safety manager to know what work he or she is to do and how to do it in a more professional way. Peter F. Drucker in The Practice of Management said, "The ignorance of the function of management, of its work, of its standards and its responsibilities is one of the most serious weaknesses of an industrial society-and it is almost universal." The biggest need in mining today is for its managers to have a thorough understanding of the management control activity.
