Two samples of drilling mud from the Hastings oil field, Texas, were tested, and the solids in each were separated into small fractions of a limited range in particle size. The mineral composition of each fraction by X-ray analysis is reported, and the results are interpreted in relation to other measured quantities, such as the physical properties of the original samples and the density of the various fractions. It was found that only 7 to 8 per cent by weight of the solids was of colloidal dimensions and that neither of the samples contained montmorillonite but did contain illite. Considerable calcite was also found. These data should be useful to the geologist interested in the origin and history of sedimentary strata as well as to the petroleum engineer. Introduction The questions, What is good drilling mud? What constitutes bad drilling mud? are pertinent, because the proper use and control of drilling fluids has been a factor of great importance in the successful drilling and completion of oil wells since the days of Captain Lucas. Adequate control of the characteristics of drilling fluids has assumed greater significance comparatively recently because of the problems introduced by caving formations in deep wells, costly blowouts and impressive mud bills. Much is known about the solution of some of the problems but, despite extensive research directed toward a better understanding of the physical and chemical properties of clay suspensions, it is difficult to define precisely a drilling mud, and much more difficult to say what constitutes a good mud. It is generally believed that the smaller particles of a drilling mud greatly affect its physical properties. In fact, it is customary to blame the colloids in a mud for nearly everything that goes amiss, because colloidal properties have effects out of all usual proportion on viscosity, filtration rate and reaction to electrolytes. It is germane to know whether drilling muds possess colloids and if so, the quantity and kind. Source oF Samples Two drilling muds from the Hastings oil field, Brazoria County, Texas, were selected because it is generally agreed that in this oil field good natural muds made solely from formations penetrated by the drill can be used until the well is nearly ready for completion. Customary drilling procedure in this field is to spud in with water, set a protective string of pipe, drill to 2500 ft. and set the surface casing. Remarkable as have been the direct results of Danks's puddler, there are some indirect and incidental results, which are well worthy of study for their intrinsic value and suggestiveness. The success of Danks's machine is due mainly to the nature of the lining and the manner in which it is attached to the walls of the revolving chamber. Herein lies Danks's merit and good fortune. Given such a lining, and the success of the machine, as far as puddling iron is concerned, could easily be predicted. Other important results have, however, been obtained with this machine, which, though clearly explicable, were, nevertheless, unanticipated. These are the increased yield of bar-iron over the pig-iron charged, and the elimination of phosphorus, which, though not absolutely complete, is yet more decided than in the case of hand-puddling. As regards the increased yield, this is merely what we have a right to expect if we consider the puddling process to consist in the oxida tion of the carbon and silicon of the pig by the oxygen of the oxide of iron. That this result is attained, nearly to the extent that the theory requires, in Danks's puddler, and has never been more than partially attained by the most careful experiments in band-puddling, points clearly to the fact that the contact of the molten pig-iron with the oxide of iron is much more intimate and complete in the one instance than in the other. The action of puddling in Danks's machine may be considered to be twofold: first, the removal of the carbon, silicon, and phospho rus of the pig, which is the primary object, and, second, the produc tion of wrought iron direct from the ore, which is entirely an inci dental result. Intelligent metallurgists were not long in recognizing in this latter result a fact of deeper import and greater value than the attainment of a perfect puddling process. A new method

THIS issue is about Chuquicamata and the new sulphide plant. Chuquicamata is moving into a new cycle of productivity; she has begun to give up the sulphide copper which lies deep-seated beneath the oxide ore zones in large but yet unknown quantity. After forty years of production, Chuqui may be likened to a strapping youngster, with adolescence and maturity still ahead. Mining operations are being projected-not for decades -but for generations. Although there are still many years of open-pit mining ahead, planning of future underground mining has been started. The bottom of the orebody is still unknown, but enough work has been done to show that Chuqui is one of the largest known copper orebodies in the world. Until recently, only the oxide ores have been mined and these have been treated at the rate of 50,000 to 60,000 tons per day by leaching. Construction of the sulphide plant was timed to coincide with reduction in production of oxide ores. The new sulphide concentrator and smelter, designed in keeping with the magnitude of the orebody, will be brought on the production line at the rate of 30,000 tons per day. The capacity of the plant now planned can be expanded to treat 60,000 tons of sulphide ore. Little wonder that Chuqui is a name legendary in the remotest mining circles. But to those who have known her more intimately, and there is hardly a mining camp without a Chuqui graduate, she means much more. She is an orebody that has made engineers. Reposing at 10,000 ft on the western flank of the Andes in the arid northern reaches of Chile, water is scarce, common fuels absent, and volcanoes and earthquakes add drama and hazard. It is these natural difficulties which have created the fascination and challenge which have caused many engineers to devote their lives to unlocking this treasure house of nature.

BITUMINOUS coal piled in heaps or bins frequently undergoes a process of spontaneous heating as the result of the absorption of oxygen. It seems probable that the first absorption of oxygen by coal which has not previously been exposed to the air may occur as a condensation or a combination of oxygen in some form which does not result in the production of carbon dioxide, but slow combustion soon begins. The absorption of oxygen is accompanied by an increase of temperature, and this by in increased rapidity of absorption; hence the dangerous condition proceeds from bad to worse, until the kindling point is reached, unless the process is interrupted. A dangerous rise of temperature can be prevented by excluding oxygen, by increasing the bulk of coal in proportion to its surface exposed, or by circulating enough air to dissipate the heat produced. The storage of coal, in practice, varies from almost complete exclusion of oxygen, by storing under water, to such freedom of access as exists when the coal is stored in open piles. Oxygen available for absorption by coal is supplied by the air in the interstices between lumps and by additional air which may enter the pile through circulation. The size, of the coal largely affects both of these supplies; for if the fragments a re small the spaces between them constitute a small percentage of the total volume, and little oxygen will be available unless the circulation of air brings in a fresh supply, while with large fragments the percentage is relatively large; circulation also is much easier through a pile of coarse lumps. In the case f lump coal, although a large amount of air may be present, the exposed surface is comparatively small and there is little opportunity for the absorption of oxygen to so rapid as to cause dangerous heating. Attempts have been made to prevent heating by allowing a sufficient circulation of air to carry off the heat generated; obviously this method cannot be applied to fine sizes nor mixed sizes.

Horace F. Lunt, York, Montana* :—Two years ago I visited the region described by Mr. Jennings and assisted in the examination of a somewhat similar group of deposits in the White Mesa sandstone on the Navajo Indian Reservation, 125 miles north of Flagstaff and 50 miles east of the Kaibab plateau. There, the Triassic red sandstone is less than 200 ft. thick, and is overlain by a stratum from 200 to 250 ft. thick of white sandstone, which gives the name of " White Mesa" to that locality. The white sandstone shows all phases of crossbedding in great complexity, and evidently marks a period of oscillation and subsidence of the water, or an elevation of the land, at the close of a geological epoch. The prevailing color is white or gray, but occasionally it is red. In structure, it is composed of well-worn grains of quartzsand, from which most of the cementing material has been leached out, leaving it soft and friable. Possibly the cement was ferruginous, as is indicated by occasional traces of red color. The copper-deposits consist of a replacement of the cement of one particular cross-bedded stratum of the sandstone by chrysocolla, having also at times various quantities of tenorite in grains or masses. Some specimens of the ore contain as much as 32 per cent. of copper. Generally the copper-deposits are a few hundred cubic feet in size, and no strict line of demarcation is shown between them and the surrounding sandstone, the bluish-green color of the chrysocolla gradually fading into the white of the sandstone. The ore is apparently associated with small vertical crevices or fissures. Some of the deposits show a distinct vein-structure, while others do not. The origin of the ore is not very clear. Discussion of the paper of L. O. HOWARD, presented at the Salt Lake meeting, August, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 91, July, 1914, pp. 1785 to 1790. E. P. MATHEWSON, Anaconda, Mont.-I would like to add a few words of praise on Mr. Howard's work at the Old Dominion. Mr. Howard has given this particular converter shell his personal attention, and the results are shown in the figures given. Similar converter shells, a little different in shape and of about the same size, have been tried in many plants throughout the United States. The results have been highly satisfactory, but there is no shell of the size of the one described by Mr. Howard that has given anything like the results that Mr. Howard's shell has given. I know of larger shells that have given very good service, and are still in operation, and require very little repair. The main thing about the whole process of using the basic lining in copper converting is to keep the temperature within reasonable bounds, particularly not to get the furnace too hot. If it is overheated a little bit, for say half an hour, an entire lining may be ruined. It is very easy to keep the temperature regulated 'if the mass is large. If you have a large mass in your converter you can easily prevent it from getting over-heated, and that is the big argument in favor of the extra large converters. Of course, there is a limit to what a plant can turn out in the way of matte. Very few plants can supply matte sufficient to keep a converter of 20 ft. in diameter in operation constantly, but the 20-ft. converter is very much superior to the 12-ft. converter in easy handling and absolute control of the temperature. I think Mr. Howard is to be congratulated on the excellent showing he has made.

PRACTICALLY all explosives may be classified as those that burn and those that detonate. Explosives of the first class include .black blasting and smokeless powder and are broadly known as low explosives, or propellants, because they merely burn and do that comparatively slowly. Their action is as if some power behind the projectile or other material were exerting a shoving or pushing action. The high, or detonating, explosives produce a smashing or shattering effect upon the material. In using military- explosives of the propellant class, the breach of the gun, or cannon, is proportioned to hold the pressure, so that the projectile will be blown out. Exactly the reverse is true in commercial work; then it is the "breach" or the hole that is to be broken. The projectile and the explosive are therefore chosen that will rupture the largest "breach" possible. With the high explosives, it is easy to break out the breach (that is why they are of no value as military propellants)" but with some of the low explosives it is necessary to plug up the muzzle very carefully before shooting. Doubtless the use of incendiary mixtures of oxidizing and combustible materials led, in the 13th century, to the perfection of the mixture which is practically the same as our commercial black blasting powder of today. About 600 years later, nitroglycerine was discovered, but for years its great potential energy could not be used because, in its liquid state, it could not be safely handled or transported. The accidental discovery that kieselguhr would absorb, and hold fairly well, three times its own weight of nitroglycerine, however, made it available. "Guhr dynamite," as the combination nitroglycerine and kieselguhr was termed, was soon displaced by dynamites having an active base, such as wood pulp and other carbonaceous combustible materials. These do all that kieselguhr will do and, in addition, increase the chemical reaction and add materially to the effectiveness of the blast.

THE Montreal mine, operated by the Montreal Mining Co., is four miles west of Ironwood, Mich., in Iron County, Wisconsin. It is the westernmost producing property on the Gogebic Iron Range of the Lake Superior district. Its production is 4000 tons of hematite per day from an average depth of 2300 ft. This tonnage is hoisted through a five-compartment vertical shaft. Several mining methods are in use but in the larger orebodies the method is sublcvel caving. ORE OCCURRENCE AND CHARATERISTICS The main orebodies of the Montreal mine lie in eastward-pitching troughs formed by the intersections of intrusive dikes with impervious members of the iron formation. The formation has an average width of 425 ft., strikes east and west and dips north at approximately 62°. The dikes dip south at 45° and bear north 20° from the strike of the formation, making the intersections with various members pitch east at 16°. The dikes are not continuous across the formation but are interrupted by a longitudinal bedding fault, which has a throw of 380 ft. vertically and 885 ft. horizontally. North of the fault zone the formation is called "hanging," south it is called " footwall" formation. The faulting has created two ore-bearing horizons; viz., at the inter- section of hanging dikes with the slate members and the foot dikes with the quartzite footwall. In each formation the main ore-bearing member consists of wavy beds of hard chert interlaid with hematite. In the most productive part of the mine, where the sublevel caving method is employed, a hanging-formation dike lies in juxtaposition with a footwall dike and the iron formation carries ore in certain sections from the quartzite footwall to the hanging dike. Here a horizontal section of the orebody may be 300 to 400 ft. wide for a length of 150 ft. or more and tail out lengthwise in both the foot and hanging formations. The footwall ore section is much longer than the hanging wall because of the orebody's greater height above the "pitching dike."

The central power-station of the De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., was designed and built under my supervision about five years ago. Since no detailed description of this plant has ever appeared, it may possess sufficient interest to arrant its publication, even at this late date. Although some additions may have been made to the plant, the following account, prepared from my notes, and accurate up to May, 1905 (at which time I severed my connection with the De Beers Company), will, I think, be found substantially correct. Certain local conditions governing the design of this plant should be stated first. IT. General Considerations. The climate is hot and dry. The region around Kimberley is arid and water is very scarce. The supply obtained from the mines contains so much material in solution that it is unfit for use in boilers or condensers (although tests recently made with a water-softening plant, built by Hans Reisert, of Germany, would indicate that water thus treated is suitable for boilers). And the amount of water required for concentrating about 30,000 tons of ore per day is so large that the question of adequate water-supply for this power-station had to be carefully considered. The rainy season extends from December to April, and the rainfall averages about 15 in. per year. Droughts are frequent; and in some years there is scarcely any rain at all.

EVERY mathematical statement of a measure of anything (as distin-guished from a count) is followed by a qualification always implied if not explicity stated--that the statement is only an estimate, which may vary from absolute accuracy within certain limits, according to the accu-racy of the measuring instrument. This basic fact, so obvious to engineers, is not so well understood by many that make use of laboratory coal tests. The tolerances that must be allowed in measurements of coal quality are very important in both their commercial and engineering applica-tions-and the significance of these tolerances depends upon the use made of the laboratory coal test. Only in recent years has there been any intensive study of this ques-tion of tolerances as applied to measurements of coal quality. There is very little in our published literature on the subject, and what has been published is not, readily comprehended by those who sell coal, or buy coal and use it, unless they happen to have made a study of the subject them-selves. There is great need for more widespread understanding of what has been discovered and how it applies to the use of laboratory coal tests. What follows is an attempt to condense into a few pages the results of the major investigations so far reported, and to explain their meaning in simple nontechnical language, with the addition of some recent illustrative experiments.

The phenomenon called "water-coning" is that, observed in many oil wells, in which bottom water gradually and frequently sudderlly displaces a part or all of the oil production when a certain rather critical production rate from the well is exceeded. To follow in detail the process of the formation of a water cone as it breaks through the oil zone and enters the well bore is a problem so complex as to make a theoretical analysis practically impossible. However, an analytical treatment of the flow system before the water has broken through and during the time that it lies statically beneath the oil zone with an elevated or "coned" surface can be carried through under certain approximations. To present an analysis which shows the essential characteristics of the coning mechanism is the purpose of the present discussion. Physical Basis of Theory and Meaning of Approximations As will always be true for flow systems where true water-coning is at all possible, the water will be supposed to lie beneath the oil zone because of its density contrast with respect to the oil. In fact, tinder the usual field conditions, when the pay horizon is reasonably homogeneous, the water most frequently enters the well through the lower zones, but even when it enters from intermediate zones it may, in the later life of the well, displace the bottom layers of oil, thus resulting in a system wherein the oil is effectively floating on the water.

THE underground haulage system in the lead-silver mine of the-Bunker Hill & Sullivan Co., situated at Kellogg, Idaho, is the most extensive in the Coeur d'Alène district, comprising about 35,000 ft. of tunnels, drifts, and cross-cuts where locomotive haulage is in use. The main working adit, known as the Kellogg tunnel, or No. 9 level, is approximately 10,000 ft. in length from the portal to the main working shaft and extends beyond that about 4,500 ft. in each of two directions. On this level all the ore from the Bunker Hill & Sullivan, the Sierra Nevada Consolidated, and the Caledonia Mining Co. an average of 44,600 tons per month-is hauled to the mills, located a short distance from the portal. Electric haulage by the trolley-type locomotive is used on this level throughout. Below this level, at intervals of 200 ft. vertically, are five other working levels (Nos. 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14); and the total haulage distance on these, where electric locomotives are used, is approximately 16,000 ft. No. 13 level has but recently been opened up and is not working-to capacity; while the main cross-cut on No. 14 has just been started, and has no need of power haulage. Of the four levels equipped with electric haulage, Nos. 11, 12, and 13 have storage-battery locomotives, and No. 10 still retains the trolley type by reason of the small and decreasing tonnage produced.

IN his recent article, Stanley C. Herold described some of the principles involved in oil-field rejuvenation. The purpose of this paper is to present certain facts, based upon observations of systematic water flooding of oil sands in the Bradford and Allegany fields of northwestern Pennsylvania and southwestern New York, which, it is believed, will partially substantiate Mr. Herold's opinions. The writer gratefully acknowledges his obligation to the Forest Oil Corpn., the Kendall Refining Co., the Petroleum Reclamation Co., W. J. Healey, of Bradford, Pa., and the Producers Oil Corpn., of Olean, N. Y., for information included in this article; and he is especially indebted to Jerry B. Newby, of the Petroleum Reclamation Co., for helpful suggestions and criticism in the preparation of the paper. It is obvious that, in the calculation of mathematical formulas for the prediction of oil recovery, uniform conditions must be assumed; otherwise, the applicability of the results of such work will be, by necessity, restricted to the area or individual property for which they were designed. Geologic and physical conditions are so variable throughout the fields where water flooding is practiced that it is difficult to devise methods that can be universally applicable. However, it is believed that there are certain fundamental principles which, when applied with specific modifications designed to meet the conditions existing in local areas or individual properties, may yield considerably greater recoveries of oil.

TWENTY-FIVE DOLLARS for nothing at all except a sheepskin. That to me is the effect of the New York State law for registration of engineers and the same may be said of any of the state licensing laws. Of course, if one has to practice in more than one state, he must pay a more or less equal amount for every state he works in; and yet there has been little effective protest against these laws. It would seem that the spirit which animated the Boston Tea Party is non-existent amongst engineers. Undoubtedly a good many consider, through their failure to understand the law, that the matter does not affect them. In New York State it is provided that "any person practicing or offering to practice profes-sional engineering or land surveying . . . shall be licensed as hereinafter provided." To quote further from the law: "A person practices professional engi-neering . . . who holds himself out as able to do, or who does, the work that an engineer does . . . " The cunning of the wording of this article can only be appreciated by considering that anyone calling himself an engineer falls within the definition; its liberal inter-pretation (I have not quoted the whole of it) would embrace many who do not consider themselves engi-neers. The state authorities may not construe it to include such individuals; indeed, they may possibly consider it inexpedient to extend it to include engineers of subordinate grade, but the possibility is always there and, even though an engineer be of the grade of assis-tant, he may at any time be called upon to substitute for his principal in responsible charge of the work. It is therefore clear that anyone calling himself engineer and practicing engineering must, for his own protection, apply for registration or run the risk of violating the law. Now, what is the sense of all this? We have done very well without such restrictions on the means of gaining our livelihood. If one only stops to think, there is hardly a minute of his modern existence when he is not dependent for his safety on the engineering by engineers of yesterday or today. How often is one in jeopardy through failure of engineering works, work done under the supervision of those same engineers? If all of us had to wait for our ends by such means, our average life would probably be some thousands of years. Where, then, is the point to the object declared in all these laws that the need for licensing is "to safeguard life, health and property?" Bosh!

A bean placed at the bottom of tubing in flowing wells is not a new idea. In fact, a device which in effect was a bottom bean was patented prior to 1890 by John D. Rockefeller. Because of the limited use of the bottom bean, prior to 1922, when it was installed in a few wells in the Santa Fe Springs field, California, the knowledge of the results of its operation is very meager. Since then various oil operators have experimented with bottom beans, but most of the records of the results obtained by their use are unavailable. For the past year or two, more attention has been directed to this method of producing wells; the theory and best means of application have been studied, and accurate records maintained. In theory, the use of bottom beans in flowing or gas-lift wells should secure certain advantageous results. With the exception of flow friction of the tubing and flow lines, there is no back-pressure held on the rising column of fluid. Thus severe beaning is possible with no danger of killing the well by too heavy a fluid column, a condition that often exists when a surface bean is used. The whole energy of the gas expanding to atmospheric pressure is utilized to lift the fluid in the well. The same effect is obtained when flowing a well through open tubing or casing. In using a surface bean this energy of expanding gas is wasted into the flow lines beyond the bean, because the fluid has reached the surface by the time the restriction is reached and the work of the gas performed. The bottom bean affords an efficient use of the expanding force of gas, utilizing less gas to raise the same amount of oil, hence allowing for lower gas-oil ratios. The flow restriction being at the entrance to the flow string, a more uniform mixture of gas and oil enters the tubing and a steadier backpressure is held on the well. The uniform mixture and high velocity attained while flowing through the bean, which is above the critical velocity required to suspend a spray condition of gas and oil, prevent slippage of gas, surging and heading with its resultant strain on the casing. The advantageous conditions allow positive control of production in gas-lift wells within limits set by the bean size and amount of input gas; and probably help to prevent sanding up of a well and the coning

Church, New York City: It requires some courage to appear as a critic of a theory which is not only the fashion among American geologists but is usually presented by them in terms which imply that any other views are an exhibition of ignorance. Still, I am obliged to say that the theory of lateral secretion as it is stated in this and other writings of Mr. Emmons and other geologists has not added much to our real knowledge or clearness of view. In the earlier and less developed stages of the theory, when it was used as Sandberger used it, to show that certain veins were probably derived from the rocks in which they lie, or which are adjacent, it was valuable in pointing us to an immediate source of ore-deposition. When we are driven to assume the existence of undiscoverable rocks at an unknown but certainly a considerable distance and in an unknown direction from the vein, I do not see that we have improved upon the despised " unknown source in depth " with which our ignorance has been covered so long. The new theory may suffer from adolescence, and these points map be cleared up by further study, but I speak of it as it is. Differentiation in a magma, by which a metal is concentrated in one member of a series of outflows, may explain why certain ores have favored a given locality with their presence; but it is not a necessary precedent to ore-formation. Concentration in the source of supply cannot be a requirement, for the forces that have been able to take up four or five tons of gold from an extensive body of rock must be able to collect four or five thousand tons of lead, copper or nickel from a proportionately more extended body of rock. That is to say, concentration is no more essential for these metals than it is for gold. In fact, differentiation, as it is now explained, is not an advance upon old ideas, but a retreat from them. It was noticed long ago that violent eruptive phenomena, however long continued, died away in solfataras; and when a vein came to be looked upon as an extinct solfatara the inference was ready that veins are eruptive in the sense that the solfataric waters collected the metals from the unerupted residue of the magma and carried them to the veins. The early views carried differentiation further than the modern school.

As there is danger that in the ensuing debate individual interests may be given emphasis out of proportion to their place, we shall do well to view the whole field of geological inquiry in order to see the problem in true perspective. THE NATURE OF GEOLOGICAL INQUIRY "Basic" and "Complex" Sciences It is convenient to divide all science into two major divisions, the basic and the complex sciences. The basic sciences separate out from reality such entities as "substances" and "movements," describe their behavior in terms of arbitrary units of measurement and derive from them by progressive abstractions concepts and patterns of behavior that exist between them, so-called general "laws" and "properties" of nature. The complex sciences, on the other hand, deal, with little or no abstraction, with those objects of reality that are accessible to man in the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, the lithosphere and the biosphere.† Their work comprises two types of inquiry. One is concerned with abstractions to the extent of dealing with types rather than individuals-that is, with such things as plants, animals, protoplasm; clouds, streams, glaciers; volcanoes and mountain ranges. It comprises the search for general properties and patterns of behavior or "laws" that characterize the objects and their reactions to each other. These properties and laws apply always, everywhere. They are independent of the stream of time. We may call the results of this sort of inquiry timeless knowledge. The other type of inquiry is concerned with the objects themselves-that is, with this animal and that plant; this river system and that mountain chain; this glacier and that valley. Like all concrete objects in nature, they are subject to change with the passage of time, especially when it is measured in years, centuries, eons. The characteristics by which we recognize them -indeed, their very existence are dependent on their position at this point in the stream of time. This we may call time-bound knowledge. The so-called descriptive sciences are all bound to the past of which the objects of their study are the product and through which alone their present properties can be understood. They are historical sciences. This obvious fact is easily overlooked, which leads to serious misunderstanding, as we shall see later. Dynamic Geology With this broad picture in mind, let us now examine the nature of geological inquiry, defining, for the purposes of this discussion, geology as the science of rocks. DETERMINATION OF SILICA OXIDE iron ores usually are found in intimate association with silica and phosphorus compounds. Their quantitative separation and purification sometimes present difficult problems to the chemist. Silicic acids may represent various degrees of dehydration. They are exceedingly weak, but combine with metallic acids and form some of the most stable oxides in nature, the silicates. When iron ores are treated with hydrochloric acid, they yield practically all their iron. However, apart from rare exceptions, varying amounts of insoluble residues of silica, alumina, lime, magnesia and compounds of phosphorus, sulphur, titanium, chromium and others will be left. If the oxides of silicon, aluminum and titanium are present in small quantities, the insoluble residue is generally very small, but the presence of these oxides more usual in larger quantities. Therefore, only a special treatment can break the bond between these elements. Ore Residues Acids remove the soluble constituent of the ore, leaving the insoluble residue, which chemically is rock or gangue and must be treated accordingly. Alkali carbonates are used frequently to break up the residue, but other fluxes have also been recommended, such as a number of lead and boron salts. The introduction of these salts, which offers certain advantages, requires, however, their removal before the other constituents can be analyzed, and this elimination is sometimes difficult. Usually in quantitative analysis silicates are dissociated by fusing them in a platinum crucible with sodium carbonate, thereby forming sodium silicate, Na2SiO3, sodium aluminate, Na2A1204, sodium titanate, Na2TiOs, and carbonates of other elements. All the carbonates are soluble in hydrochloric acid, but also some silicic acid is formed that must be rendered insoluble. To this end the solution is evaporated several times, as the first evaporation still leaves as much as 5 per cent of the silica soluble. Even after a number of evaporations, minute quantities of silica may be found with the iron and alumina present. Perchloric Acid as an Agent for Dehydrating Silicic Acid Perchloric acid, HCI04, (60 per cent), has been used for years as a solvent, but few chemists have used it to dehydrate silica. It is derived from anhydrous perchloric C1207, which is most unstable and dangerous. Perchloric acid is a strong oxidizing agent, which boils at 203°C. It is more effective in rendering silica insoluble than any other known agent, and most rapid in action. IN plants casting electric-furnace ingots and converting them immediately into blooms, billets, slabs, bars or forgings, the criterion of quality performance is the soundness of the semifinished or finished product. When rejections are necessary, it is not always obvious whether the defects were caused by an unsound ingot or by improper treatment during the heating and forming operations. To evaluate the effects of the numerous factors involved, it is necessary to accumulate a large number of detailed observations and to analyze and interpret these data properly. Even after a thorough investigation has been conducted, it is impossible, in some cases, to isolate the cause of the defect and say that it is definitely the result of an unsound condition in the ingot or mistreatment of the ingot during further processing. Two factors that are extremely difficult to evaluate are the chemical composition of the steel and time from finish pour to charge in the soaking pits or "track time," and it is necessary to evaluate their combined effects before many other factors can be studied. Plain carbon, fine-grained steel in the range of 0.18 to 0.23 pct carbon, is very susceptible to cracking and the longer the elapsed time between the pouring of the ingots and stripping for charging into the soaking pits, the higher the billet rejections for cracks are found to be.
