THE zinc deleading processes at the Parral and Santa Barbara mills are described separately to provide a basis for comparison. Although the two procedures are fundamentally alike, there are some differences in application to meet specific conditions. The Asarco mill at Parral in the State of Chihuahua is a flotation plant treating 1450 metric tons per day of complex sulphide copper-lead-zinc ores. In general, the procedure used for selective separation of the minerals into a copper, a lead, and a zinc concentrate follows the usual practice. First, a bulk copper-lead concentrate is floated and then separated into a final copper and a final lead concentrate by the sulphurous acid process. A small tonnage of high grade gravity lead concentrate is tabled from the bulk copper-lead cleaner tailing before it is reground so as to avoid undesirable over-grinding and sliming of this portion of the lead mineral. Next, a zinc concentrate is floated from the lead rougher tailing and, as described later, is separated into a final lead product and a final zinc concentrate. Finally, the zinc rougher tailing receives a strong scavenger float to remove all recoverable middling values for regrinding and return to the flotation circuits. The slime is separated from the scavenger flotation product, and only the sand portion goes to the regrind section. The minerals in the separated slime are extremely resistant to all methods of selective separation and pose one of the major problems awaiting solution. Nevertheless, the slime shows a profit when mixed with either the lead or the zinc concentrate, except when metal prices are very low, so it is accepted as a final product for lack of a more profitable method of handling it. It is well that the usual system for supplying water at high pressure purposes of hydraulic mining possesses serious disadvantageense, delay and large annual repairs. In the coastal plain region of the middle Atlantic slope there are no large supplies of potable surface-waters. The great rivers by which the region is intersected are tidal estuaries, and the water of their local branches is often of bad quality. The cities situated at intervals along the western margin of the region obtain a plentiful supply of excellent water from the rivers above the tidal estuaries, but out on the coastal plain surface-waters are mainly used. A few artesian wells have been sunk which afford abundant water, but their number is at present very limited. Norfolk, Newport News, and the many smaller places use surface-waters, and all over the region there is great need for purer and more abundant supplies. During the past five years I have been engaged in a study of the geology of the coastal plain for the U. S. Geological Survey, and have given special attention to the question of subterranean waters. In this communication I shall present a brief review of the geological conditions under which such waters occur in this region, and give an account of the wells which have been bored. Unfortunately the number of well-records is small, and some of the most important questions of subterranean geology are as yet far from settled. It is hoped that this paper may lead to further borings, especially as the cost of artesian wells has been much reduced by the introduction of new machinery and methods, and is now quite within the reach of the average community. In New Jersey there are many wells, and the water-bearing horizons are so definitely determined that they may almost everywhere be predicted with certainty. In Maryland and Virginia the data are less definite, but there is excellent evidence of a wide distribution of water at moderate depths.

THE milling of talc, as is the case of many non-metallic minerals, until recently, has not received adequate technical consideration, for the talc industry has become of importance only within the last decade. At first, talc was used only in the massive form, for foot warmers, griddles, and so on, and milling methods were unnecessary. As the demand for ground talc increased, producers adopted the machinery used in the milling of flour; in fact, many talc mills were rebuilt flour mills. Improvement has been slow, but today several types of grinding and separating machinery are in use; many of them, however, are still inadequate and inefficient. To determine the best methods of milling talc, it is necessary to understand the essential properties a talc must possess to fit it for a particular use. For toilet purposes, whiteness, freedom from lime and grit, fineness of grain, and good "slip" are essential. As a paper filler or coating, the talc must be white, have a good slip, be free from grit and iron, uniform, and fine grained; freedom from lime is a disputed point. Fibrous talc is supposed to be superior to massive on account of the interlocking of grains in the paper, thus increasing its strength; this point, though, is in doubt. In general, talc for the paper industry need not be of as high quality or as fine grained as that used for toilet purposes. Talc is usually bought by sample, for which reason it is difficult to state the essential properties for use in paint, rubber, roofing, and so on. The adoption of standard screen tests and standard grades by producers is necessary before an accurate basis for manufacturing or selling standards can be established. Off-color tales might be utilized, as in Germany and-Austria, by the establishment of standard grades of colored tales.

J. J. Kanter.*—The authors of this paper have demonstrated that at 500°F their alloy will elongate, under appropriately adjusted stress, one or two per cent over a period of 6000 hr. Then they show that after the alloy has so elongated, it will still elongate anothcr 40 per cent if it is tested at ordinary temperature. I should like to ask the authors how much more than 2 per cent over a period of 6000 hr. their alloy will elongate at 500°F. H. L. BuRghofE.—We do not know, because we have not carried out stress-rupture tests on this material. I believe your point concerning the desirability of stress-rupture testing is very well taken. In the material that we have subsequently tested we have not seen any signs of deterioration. We do not know how much further it is possible to go beyond the 2 per cent before finding grain-boundary separation. We have not encountered any under the conditions of the test. W. E. Kingston.†—IS this particular type of copper susceptible to strain-aging, and if so at those comparatively low temperatures, is that going to affect the shape of the curve? By strain-aging I mean the phenomena that certain ferrous alloys show in which the resistance to deformation increases suddenly during the low-temperature creep cycle, apparently due to some precipitation type of reaction, perhaps analogous to hydrogen embrittlement. H. L. BUrghoff.—I believe that this material is not subject to strain-aging of this type. It is very high in copper content, of course, nearly loo per cent. There are some very minor impurities and it carries a small amount of phosphorus, which, unless it is present as an oxide, should be in solid solution well within the solubility limits. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM THE administration of industrial organization today embraces more than the cost of production and selling prices. Competition is deeper seated than mechanical devices, overhead charges, and a shrewd manipulation of the markets. Despite the "down-to-the-minute" equipment and the "last word in organization," it is quite evident that "capacity production" will be an unknown quantity until the workman is considered as a producer, in relation to his home, as he is now considered in relation to industry. Whether or not a man shall do an honest day's work is as much a psychological condition as it is a matter of physical strength or skill. His attitude toward his work each morning is determined, to a large degree, by the environment of his home. Whether this attitude, good or bad, obtains the day through will depend entirely upon the one fact as to whether the corporation which employs him does or does not differentiate between the mechanical factor and the human factor in industry. To be more specific, sociological work, under whatever name, should be of such a character as to influence the life of a workman in such a manner as to establish a cooperative interest in his work, foster within him a spirit of contentment in his home, lead him-so to employ his leisure time that he will not lower his efficiency as a workman, destroy his domestic happiness, or endanger his standing in the community as a citizen. While no fixed rules of procedure can well be formulated for the development of the work, yet definite lines of activities will readily present themselves as applicable to the individual needs of a community. This is especially true where community influences and agencies pertaining to general welfare are easily correlated.

The purpose of this paper is to record the results obtained in the use of the Russell process at Aspen, Colo., covering a period of fourteen months, from November, 1891, to December, 1892, during which time over 30,000 tons of ore, purchased outright, on sample and assay, were treated. No explanation of results will be attempted, nor will the chemistry of the process be discussed. The plant was designed by C. A. Stetefeldt, of San Francisco, and built by the owners by day-labor. The entire plant is run by water-power, supplied by a flume 3600 feet long, and a pipe-line 2200 feet long, with a head of 170 feet. A Pelton water-wheel, 8 feet in diameter, is used, from which power is transmitted by wire-rope to the main counter-shaft in the mill, a distance of about 250 feet. From the mill to the samplingworks, about 150 feet, power is also transmitted by a wirerope. A Pelton water-wheel, 3 feet in diameter, supplies power to the dynamo for lighting the plant. The works are located adjoining the Santa Fe railroad tracks, and all ore and supplies are unloaded directly from the cars to the works. The sampling-works are provided with crushers and rolls, the latter being used only on samples, and not on the entire ore. The Cornish hand-quartering method is used in sampling ore for purchase. After crushing and sampling, the ore goes to the bedding-floor, where it is made up into mixtures suitable for the mill. The drying-plant consists of four Stetefeldt double shelfdryers, six shelves high, and is provided with dust-chambers and a stack 65 feet high for draft. These dryers are fired with gas

Taking the Long View THE present international situation has serious implications for this nation. The possibility of total war is no more appalling than the threat of making the United States permanently into an armed camp. A period of ten years under such conditions could mean a Communist victory without firing a shot-if the present trend toward statism is allowed to continue. As individual citizens and as members of the mining profession we have the power to oppose the march toward socialism. We must not adopt shortsighted policies dictated by self-interest, but must endeavor to size up the situation as a whole and act according to what will be best in the national interest. The economic picture for the metal mining industry under present emergency conditions is apparently bright. Demand for metals exceeds supply. But there is danger that fluctuating prices will bring Government regulation. Care must be exercised in our pricing policies, or the calamity of Government intervention will be inevitable. President Truman's "loophole" reference to percentage depletion early in the year caused a brief flurry of excitement, but now that the immediate threat is over the industry has lapsed into sommolence on this subject. Special tax privileges accorded the mining industry because of inherent risks should be guarded by a continuing propaganda campaign to educate Congress and the public. If this is not done we may find ourselves losing the necessary tax protection which we now possess by a capricious act of legislation. Stockpiling minerals from abroad certainly lengthens the life of our own mineral resources. The present consumer demand for the base metals indicates foreign sources of supply for stockpiling. However, this is only one facet of the problem. For strategic military reasons it is necessary that the United States have quick sources of all minerals within our national boundaries. Undeveloped mineral deposits do not meet this need so that where it is possible to encourage our own mineral development by stockpile purchases, it should be done. A need exists for an overall controlling agency that would make purchases for the stockpile according to military necessity, current metal market conditions, and so as to strengthen the mining industry. In the course of the history of the United States we have been engulfed in several wars by the necessity of protecting our economic rights abroad trading privileges-and also because of moral obligations. Disregarding the moral side, it is difficult to reconcile fighting wars to protect world freedom of trade when in peacetime we attempt to restrain such trade by tariff barriers. When it comes to accepting subsidies from the Government in one form or another it is difficult to overlook the immediate personal gains and see in the future that where the Government lays out capital it becomes a partner in the business and not a silent one. It is apparent that hope for the traditional American way of life cannot be bought without some self-sacrifice; and we cannot wait for the other fellow to start it because it is the responsibility of each individual citizen. By taking the long view our course should be apparent and not diverge sharply from our own personal benefit.

THE operations described in this paper are those of the flotation plant of the Valley Forge Cement Co. at Conshohocken, Pa., and concern the use of a particular cationic reagent-namely, DP-243. The role of this reagent in this plant may be better understood by first considering the purpose of beneficiating cement rock in general and the specific problems at the Valley Forge plant. The ultimate purpose of beneficiating cement rock is to obtain a kiln feed of the desired chemical composition in a form suitable for the most efficient kiln operation. The chemical composition is governed by the type of cement to be made. Before government restrictions (the purpose of which is to simplify operations during wartime) limited the types of portland cement a manufacturer is permitted to produce, five principal types of cement were generally recognized by the industry. They are based upon chemical and physical specifications proposed by the American Society for Testing Materials, federal and other governmental agencies, state highway departments, water boards and other users of large quantities of cement. The physical as well as chemical specifications for any particular type of cement necessitate proper proportioning of the major components-that is, the silica, alumina, iron and lime-and it is necessary to establish and maintain definite limits for each in the raw mix. The manufacturer must then prepare a kiln feed of a composition that will yield a final product that will fulfill the desired specification. This step is further complicated for kilns using coal as fuel, by the amount and analysis of the ash introduced. The amount and nature of the dust lost during burning will also affect the composition of the kiln feed. The problem of preparing a kiln feed of the desired chemical composition is not a simple one, and it is the final product that governs the methods used to obtain such a feed. For example, in starting with a material deficient in lime for the mix sought, it may not be sufficient to raise it to the required lime content. The other constituents must also be present in the proper proportions. In some cases, it may be necessary to raise the lime content to a point greatly exceeding that of the final mix, then, by addition of one or more other materials lower in lime, obtain the mix. The rock used at the Valley Forge plant is a metamorphosed argillaceous limestone of the Jacksonburg formation, the same formation as that of the Lehigh Valley cement rock (which occurs approximately 50 miles north), and its oxide composition is similar to that of the latter. The only practical differences between the two are that, as a result of metamorphosis, crystallization of the Valley Forge rock is considerably coarser and it contains less carbon than the Lehigh Valley rock as well as slightly more magnesia in the form of magnesian mica. The calcium carbonate content of the various strata in the Valley Forge quarry ranges from about 65 per cent to over 85 per cent, the average for the entire quarry being somewhat under the requirement for manufacture of cement, which usually is from 75 to 76 per

THIS TALK is a digest of some of the information contained in tables, one on practices and one on costs of shaft sinking, in Bulletin 357 of the U. S. Bureau of Mines written by E. D. Gardner, Supervising Engineer of the Bureau at Tucson, and myself. The table of practices contains information on 43 shafts and the table of costs contains information on 25 shafts. These various shafts were sunk between 1917 and 1930 so they may be termed modern practice with costs applicable in the United States, Canada and Mexico. In the compilation of this material the statistics on shafts which were concreted have been eliminated, as these figures were entirely out of line with corresponding figures for timbered shafts. It is my experience that where costs are divided between sinking and concreting the tendency is to load the costs onto the larger item of concreting. Thus a shifting of costs making an addition of 10 per cent in concreting costs may suffice to make a deduction of 40 per cent in sinking costs. Fine work is done (on the books) and everybody is happy. Most shafts are sunk with three shifts of men per day. Each shift consists of men who are miners, muckers, or timbermen, as chance may call for during their shift. Where pumping or high fixed costs do not necessitate three shifts it is cheaper to sink on two shifts. It is desirable for speed and economy in any case to work out a cycle of operations for each 24 hours. In this way men are hired for their ability as machinemen, muckers, or timbermen; they know exactly what to do and there is no passing the buck to the next shift.

The problems associated with the processing of the Tilden ore are very much representative of the problems encountered in plants processing fine grained magnetic and nonmagnetic iron ores. I would like to comment on some of the problems mentioned in Dr. Nummela'spaper and add to his list of research opportunities in the processing of iron ores. Grinding, the most important step in the processing of fine grained iron ores, is synonymous with liberation. One grinds to separate discrete grains of minerals from the gangue. By convention- al grinding in tumbling mills, mostly random size reduction is achieved with relatively little preferential liberation of minerals. Not only are discrete particles broken that should not be broken, but damage is done to the mineral surfaces. The combination of over- grinding and surface damage shows up in lower recovery figures and higher grinding costs. What is obviously needed is a better comminution process that is more discriminating and that would permit liberating mineral particles at the coarsest possible size with a minimum production of fines. Laboratory attempts at such preferential grinding have been quite successful, but technological difficulties have unfortunately prevented its use. Impact grinding is a good example of a new comminution process that has not been accepted because of equipment problems. Either these problems have to be solved or new comminution systems have to be developed to reduce grinding costs and improve liberation. In his paper Dr. Nummela mentions the change in the primary mill throughput that occurs during the winter months. Seasonal changes in the operation of the grinding circuit and other unit operations have been observed in many plants, and many explanations for this phenomenon have been advanced. The paper by M. Lonoff looks at the importance of byproduct prices on copper production. The paper develops several interesting points on this topic, but there are some points in the theoretical discussion that could use further development. A couple of these theoretical topics will be considered here using the paper's framework of assumptions without concern about how realistic the assumptions are for the copper industry. Lonoff’s theoretical model is based on a static, homogenous world where all copper/byproduct deposits are identical, and these deposits are the main source of these metals. Due to the importance of the byproducts to the production decision, the term coproducts will be substituted for the term byproducts to reflect more accurately this condition. The conclusion is drawn that a rise in coproduct prices necessitates a decrease in copper prices because copper production is increased as a consequence of increased coproduct production. The observation that real world behavior does not always follow this pattern is dismissed as "speculation." However, it can be easily shown that within this simple framework market forces might create the observed behavior. The key question to be answered is what causes coproduct prices to rise. Three possible cases will be used as illustrations. The first case is the one implicity assumed by Lonoff. Here, the demand for coproducts increases at all prices (an outward parallel shift of the demand curve) with the demand for copper remaining constant. As reported in the paper, the results are higher coproduct prices, an increase in coproduct production, and lower copper prices due to the resulting increase in copper production. The second case is when the supply of coproducts are constrained-leading to higher market prices. Copper production, as required by the simple model, is also reduced which

THE questions as to what grades of ore it pays to conserve for the future, and the valuation of low-grade reserves, are becoming immediate and definite as applied to individual ore deposits, and seem to call for some sort of quantitative answer. Both opinion and practice involving these questions differ widely. The number of variables in this problem is so large that final solution will perhaps never be agreed upon, yet there seem to me to be certain controlling factors which can be placed in quantitative relation and serve to reduce the number of variables which it is necessary to consider in a given instance. I assume that it will not pay either for the individual or for the State to conserve any ore when the present cost of conservation (by stock piling or otherwise), when compounded at 6 per cent. interest for the number of years which would elapse before this ore is used, will exceed the profit which the ore will yield when it is used. It may be urged that any loss to the individual may be made up in gain to the State. This might be true if there was any definite limit to the amount of iron ore, but when we remember that iron makes up .4 per cent. of all the rocks of the earth and the amount of rock carrying iron in excess of 20 per cent. is for practical purposes, unlimited, it is apparent that posterity is assured of its iron ore. The changes will be mainly in methods and cost of extracting the ore. Therefore, any expenditure of money or effort now, which when compounded will exceed the worth of the effort or money needed in the future to utilize the iron, is a net loss both to the individual and to the community.

There have already been so many subjects of a purely mechanical nature presented to the Institute of Mining Engineers, that it is unnecessary for me to apologize for adding another to the list. When a new invention, or what is supposed to be a new invention, claiming simply an improvement on the well-known devices, is to be described, it is usual to point out the defects of the old and give a history of the object or the art up to date. But, as no doubt a large proportion of the members of this Institute know as much, or more, about the history and use of the steam-engine indicator than I do myself, I will not further preface the subject, than to remind you that what called for the Richards's improvement on the Watt's indicator was high speed; that the leading improvement was the reduction of momentum in the reciprocating parts; and that this was accomplished by making the parts lighter, and reducing the travel of the heaviest, of them, and consequently the speed and momentum. The use of the indicator has been extended, for the speed of steamengines and other prime movers has been increased, until one engineer at least, John Cooper, of Philadelphia, says, "I want an indicator that will work up to a thousand revolutions." .Mr. Thompson, of the Buckeye Steam-Engine Company, of Salem, Ohio, has improved on the Richards's indicator by another reduction in the momentum, which is done by putting the parallel motion nearer the fulcrum of the pencil arm, reducing both weight and travel. The characteristic feature of the indicator I am going to illustrate is a still further reduction in the same direction, which is accomplished by dispensing with the parallel motion altogether. THE requirements of the standard specifications under which Portland cement is sold have materially increased within the past 10 years, but practically all companies are now furnishing cement better than these requirements; in some cases exceeding them by nearly 100 per cent. From a sales standpoint, it is desirable to have a product that is uniform to a high degree and free from occasional quality troubles. A failure in quality, even if it affects only a few hundred barrels out of a yearly output of a million or more, is apt to be talked about in the trade and to affect the salability of the entire output. For these reasons, there has recently been great activity along the lines of quality control and improvement; and some of the most interesting problems of the industry are in this field. From the manufacturing standpoint, the quality of cement is chiefly a matter of uniform and proper chemical composition of the raw mix fed to the kilns plus proper burning in the kilns; the fineness to which the cement is ground, the proportions of gypsum, the method of seasoning, and the like are contributory factors. Uniform chemical composition of the raw mix has been one of the most difficult problems to solve. Most plants will use from 1000 to 3000 tons of rock per day and in but few cases is this material as it lies in the quarry even approximately uniform in composition. The problem, then, is to quarry and mix this raw material in such a manner that every handful passing through the kilns will have practically the same analysis as every other handful. To accomplish this purpose there are two methods of preparation: the wet process and the dry.

IN order to make his work easier, every master of any art whatever keeps always to the road that he has learned or that his skill or good judgment has shown him to be the best. Although there are various methods used in making moulds for guns, depending on whether they are large or small, nevertheless almost the same road is traveled in all. You must first know that it is necessary to make a pattern of wood or clay exactly as the gun is to be, with those ornaments of cornices and rings that you wish to be in the bronze. Let us suppose that you wish this pattern to be of wood. You must try to have for this a piece of fir as long and thick as you wish, dry, solid, and well seasoned, with few or no knots if possible. This should be longer than the gun by the length of the head and foot rests where it is pivoted [83v] so that it can be turned as on a lathe. On the end where the mouth is to be it should project out enough so that you can attach a feeding head at the top of the casting. You can make or have this pattern made round, fluted, spiral, or half fluted, as you like best, making the measurements exactly correct with all care and attention. Then two bearing trestles must be fixed firmly in the ground, one at the head and one at the foot, as is usually done with roasting spits and as you see drawn here. This done, if it is fluted, put the cornice pieces at the place where you wish the mouth to be and at the foot where the fire is applied. These are

It is common to blame irregular assay results upon volatilization and much has been written upon the subject, but there is no real evidence that, in a properly conducted assay, the loss of either gold or silver by volatilization is sufficient to affect appreciably the result, even when arsenic or antimony may be present. Bulk assays of flue dust from assay muffles have been published, but the data given are totally insufficient to even approximate the volatilization from a single assay; and such figures as we have indicate the volatilization to be extremely small. Diligent search in the literature and wide inquiry among assayers and instructors have failed to produce a single case where the litharge volatilized in making an assay has been collected and assayed for gold and silver. Having attempted to do this, with most indifferent success, I am not surprised that this has not been done. While various textbooks give volatilization as a cause of loss in cupella-tion, it may safely be said that in the rare cases where this volatilization is sufficient to affect appreciably the result it is due to excessive temperature. Percy' says "The loss of silver by volatilization during cupellation is very slight (unless the temperature has been much too high), and may be disregarded." This statement is repeated by the Beringers2 and Smith,3 who includes gold with silver. Mitchell4 says the litharge fume rarely contains over one ten-thousandth of silver. Campredon5 ays that at a proper temperature no silver is lost by volatilization. Primarily, excessive temperature may be due to too high general temperature in the muffle; but it may often be due to temperature localized within the bead by oxidation of the metals and this may be influenced by other causes than the general temperature. The results from fracturing plexiglas beams are combined in eight existing equations to determine the surface energy of the material. The reliability of each equation is tested, and the equation in use to determine fracture toughness is found to be the most exact. This equation is then used in determination of the surface energy of Barre Granite.
