MANY producers have held that the only workable quicksilver ore is easily recognized by its .cinnabar content. In most cases this is true. A noticeable exception is a. particular opalite deposit where part of the ore now being mined in considerable quantity shows only the yellow mineral, calomel, or its alteration products. This mineral, on exposure to the sunlight, quickly becomes coated with gray or black layers that may be removed by scraping to reveal the yellow mineral beneath. The blackening of this mercuric chloride on exposure to sunlight shows reaction to form metallic mercury, which is usually plainly present in this class of ore.

The new electrolytic zinc plant of the American Zinc Company of Illinois commenced operation in April 1941. The simple flowsheet using the standard current density and the economic reasons that dictated it are given herewith. The Evans-Wallower Zinc Co. built an electrolytic zinc plant at Monsanto, 111., in 1929 and operated it for about two years. The plant stood idle from 1932 and was purchased by the American Zinc Co. in 1940. Because of the condition of the , equipment, excepting the motor generator set, a complete rebuilding was necessary. The Fairmont City plant of the American Zinc Co. could treat the leach residues, the purification cake and the skimmings from the melting furnace in its various plants. This possibility permitted a simple flowsheet with good economic results. The flowsheet is shown in Fig. I. The calcined concentrates are leached in mechanically agitated tanks with spent electrolyte and such ferric iron solution as necessary. When the acid has been neutralized and the iron coagulated, the fluid is discharged to settling tanks. The underflow from these thickeners is filtered on a Moore filter; the filter cake leaves the plant for retreatment and the filtrate joins the thickener overflow. Zinc dust is added to this solution until the copper and cadmium are precipitated. The pulp is filtered through shriver presses, which deliver the purified solution to stor- age tanks, and the copper-cadmium-zinc cake is shipped for retreatment snd recovery of these three metals. The purified solution is electrolyzed; the regenerated acid is returned for use in the leaching plant and the cathode zinc, after stripping, goes to the melting furnace, from which it is cast in slabs. The skimmings from the melting furnace are shipped to the Fairmont City plant for reduction to metal in the retort furnaces. The choice of this simple flowsheet was made possible only because of the facilities of the Fairmont City plant. The long leaching period, with high acid content and high temperature which characterize the high-density process, gives a higher zinc extraction but also dissolves more impurities, which must be removed. The same is true to a lesser degree of the multi-step leaching of the western low-density plants. By the sacrifice of some initial extraction, solutid'ns can be obtained that are relatively easy to purify and give good ampere efficiency. This loss in initial extraction is made up in the retreatment of the residues in the Waelz plant. The impurities that accompany the zinc thus extracted are inconsequential when the Waelz product is treated in a distillation plant. It was recognized that this flowsheet would require a somewhat greater amount of sulphuric acid—either as acid or as sulphate sulphur in the calcine—because of poorer washing. The sulphuric acid plant at Fairmont City could deliver 60" BC. acid to compensate for the sulphate loss and the cost would be less than the cost of more intensive washing.

The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to Mining and Metallurgy and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes, It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization and at a minimum of expense. J. V. W. Reynders is chairman of the Endowment Committee. Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund THE Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund, consisting of $100,000, was given the Institute in 1929 by the family of Colonel Mudd who had served the Institute as Director, Vice-president and on many important committees. His long career of distinguished professional and public service is fittingly commemorated by this fund. The income is available for support of research and other special purposes. In view of Colonel Mudd's life work with the nonferrous metals and his keen interest in the younger men of the profession it is purposed to apply the fund particularly to the benefit of these two. Control of income is exercised by the Board of Directors on recommendation of a Committee consisting of the President and Secretary, ex officiis, together with three others selected by the Board. The Committee consists at present of the following members: W. H. Bassett, President; H. Foster Bain, Secretary; Harvey S. Mudd serving until October, 1931; Edgar Rickard serving till October, 1932; George Otis Smith serving until October, 1933. On recommendation of this Committee the Board has authorized as a first project the preparation of a series of small books designed especially to be helpful to the Junior Members. These are now being written and it is hoped will be available for distribution in 1931. The list includes: A Brief History of American Mining, by T. A. Rickard; Mining Costs, Why and What, by Arthur Notman; Introduction to Mineral Economics, by H. Foster Bain and T. T. Read; Choice of Methods—A Record of Experience in Making Decisions, with chapters by W. H. Bassett, F. W. Bradley, E. DeGolyer, Howard N. Eavenson, A. B. Parsons, J. V. W. Reynders, L. D. Ricketts, Robert E. Tally, Pope Yeatman and others. One other book is projected but final selection has not been made. The problem of good engineering practice and. of good conservation practice in oil production is that of keeping gas in solution. This can best be done by producing a field as a water-drive field. Some degree of water drive is believed to be present in most fields but in the past most fields have been produced too rapidly to allow water drive to be effective. Ultimate recovery should be So per cent greater for fields produced by water drive over that from gas-expansion fields. Wide spacing will permit fields of low-degree water drive to be produced effectively as water-drive fields. INTRODUCTION NEGLECTING all the complicated scientific and technical argument that leads to the conclusion, the solution of the problem of good production practice, of good engineering practice, and of good conservation practice in oil production is to keep gas in solution. This can best be done by producing fields at a rate low enough to make effective the water drive, which exists, it is generally believed, to a degree great enough to be made effective in more than 80 per cent of the fields of the United States. Oil is being so produced in the Ten Section field of California; the Hobbs field of New Mexico; the Yates, Hastings, Friendswood, Anahuac fields and the main sand of the Conroe pool, in Texas; the Magnolia pool in Arkansas, and doubtless in many other pools. The measures of success in the efforts to achieve the solution of the problem are the maintenance of bottom-hole pressure and the prevention of an increase in gas-oil ratio. Some decline from the original bottom-hole pressure and the production of some gas are essential. A pressure gradient from the reservoir to the well is necessary and at least as much gas must be produced as that in solution in a barrel of oil. Once the optimum pressure and the gas-oil ratio have been established, they should be maintained. How common is water drive in oil and gas pools? General opinion is that some degree of water drive is almost universal. Theoretically, this conclusion appears to be a sound one. According to our present understanding of the processes of sedimentation, we would expect to find all sands or sandstone charged with connate water unless it had been displaced by some other fluid, such as fresh water percolating into the beds at the outcrop, or oil and gas, or gas only, in reservoirs. The fact that the original pressure of the fluid system in most reservoirs is approximately that of the hydrostatic head of water for the corresponding depth indicates that the sands are charged with water, and common experience in drilling into the extensions of the porous zones beyond the reservoir is to find them watercharged. The very fact that oil and gas pools have substantial pressures in their original undisturbed state indicates either that a reservoir is a rigid, closed system, a con-

The Mufulira mine in Northern Rhodesia is 13° south of the Equator and at an altitude of 4100 ft above sea level. The concentrator was planned in 1930 to treat about 10,000 tons of ore per day, but before construction work had gone very far the size of the plant was reduced to 1500 tons daily capacity. Then just as the construction was finished in December 1931, the price of copper did not warrant the commencement of operations and it was not until October 1933 that the mine re-opened. Extensions have been made to the plant in 1934, 1935, 1936, 1937, 1940 and finally in 1945. The capacity of the plant when the 1945 extension is completed will be 9500 short tons per day. The various extensions have been carried out with the minimum confusion and with great skill on the part of the designers and the erection engineers. In dealing with the plant in this paper it is proposed to give an outline of the present practice and only to refer to past practice when it is considered of particular interest. Ore Treated The ore consists of fine grained highly siliceous, felspathic and argillaceous quartz- ites, the latter containing graphitic carbon and locally termed graywacke. These rocks are considerably altered near the surface and on the fringes of the ore body. Despite extensive efforts at mixing, both underground and in the crushing plant, many sudden changes of ore take place in the mill feed. The minerals are chalcocite, bornite and chalcopyrite with relatively unimportant amounts of malachite, native copper, azurite, covellite and chrysocolla. Gold is present at about I oz to a thousand tons, and silver at about 2 dwt. per ton. With increasing depth the nonsulphide content or,, as commonly termed locally, the oxide content of the ore is decreasing and is now less than 0.25 pct against a high of 0.77 pct- Crushing Operations The first stage of crushing is done under. ground where the oversize from I2-in. grizzlies is fed to a 56 X 72-in. jaw crusher. At the Selkirk shaft two 10-ton skips deliver the run of mine ore at a rate of 450 tons per hour to the 400-ton capacity shaft bins. One 6 ft wide Ross chain feeder and one locally made air-operated finger feeder feed the two 30-in. McCully crushers. Ahead of each crusher is a 6 X 9-ft spring grizzley spaced at 5 in. on a 35O slope. Neither the Ross chain feeder nor the finger feeder is entirely satisfactory and for the wet, muddy and sticky ore that has to be handled it is planned to replace these with two 6-ft wide apron pan feeders. GROWTH of the United States to industrial supremacy in the world is mainly because of the rapid exploitation of natural resources. The easily found high grade mineral resources have been depleted and attention has turned to low-grade ores. Progress has been made from the comparatively crude mining and milling techniques, which sufficed for the rich deposits, to more complex technology for exploiting low-grade ores. In spite of this progress the defense program is pointing up the fact that the mining industry is caught short on ability to produce the needed mineral raw materials. The mining industry is digging itself out of business here in the United States.

Grinding Practice-These tests were run in the 9 ft diam by 8 ft long grate discharge ball mills at Climax. Each mill functions in closed circuit with a 78 in. Akins duplex high-weir classifier, and a circulating load of 300 pct is maintained. The size of the mill feed is 6 pct on 3/8ths, which is ground to pass 28 mesh. Testing Methods-Each grinding section is equipped with a conveyor scale on the ball mill feeder belt, a watt-hour meter on the ball mill motor, and an automatic sampler for the ground product. These instruments are exceptionally valuable to the mill testing program.

Exploration by AS&R of the Nuestra Senora lead-zinc-silver property, located in Cosala District, Sinaloa, Mexico, has proved sufficient ore to warrant placing the mine on an operating basis. Installation of mine plant, concentrator, and townsite, is expected to commence late in 1951. Opening of a lead-zinc property in Nigeria is also being contemplated by AS&R. Private enterprise is being urged by Secretary of Interior Chapman to start a synthetic fuels industry, it is reported. Based on tests at the Louisiana, Mo., plant which produces quality gasoline at costs up to 144 per gal, he predicts that a commercial plant would pay for itself in 10 years.

A key point in the design and operation of a modern mining operation is the construction of what is called an ore-body model or block model. This model is a representation of reality constructed from predicted information. The blocks involved are merely subsets of the overall model which allows manipulation of the contained information on a local scale. In general, block models enable mine planners to effectively select the most promising means of extracting the ore both physically and economically. The uses of a block model can be quite diversified, but one must realize that a single model that satisfies all curiosities and forms of expertise is difficult to construct.

AN isopachous map is one on which lines connect points of equal thickness of a given unit. This type of map is used by the Florida Phosphate Project of the U. S. Geological Survey to represent the economic phosphate deposits known as matrix and the waste material, or overburden, that overlies the matrix. The top of the bed on which the phosphate was deposited is known as the basement and a subsurface contour map of this old buried erosion surface is known as a basement map. Recent experiments have been made in preparing maps that show tonnages and grades of the phosphate content of the matrix.

ABSTRACT A critical summary is given of the analytical procedures available to the engineer for the analysis of slope stability. The emphasis is on the various types of behaviour that have been measured in different rock types. A method of assessing the possibility of failure of simple three dimensional wedges is provided in an attempt to demonstrate how structural features can be included in a meaningful manner. An outline for theoretical design is provided that stresses the importance of carrying out a 'Back Analysis' of large and small instrumented failures so that realistic parameters of the rock mass forming the pit slopes can be obtained.

A critical path approach is presented for the problem of mine ventilation networks where regulators and fans are employed to control the airflow distribution. The problem is a classic one arising in mine ventilation planning. By identifying the analogy between the network for controlled flow and that for critical path method (CPM), the applications of the well known CPM technique to the ventilation problem become straightforward. The mathematical formulation of the problem is presented and the solutions are illustrated with examples. The cutset operation is introduced and employed for obtaining alternative solutions. The effects of booster fans on the total air power of the ventilation network are also discussed.

S. Mortsell and J. Svenssofi (Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden)—Bloecher states that the apparatus described by him should be a suitable instrument in the mineral dressing laboratories for determining the specific surface of such granular products that are generally investigated. We want to express a somewhat different opinion, as we doubt that the gas adsorption method of surface measurement really is the most suitable method in mineral dressing laboratories. It is well known that the surface area, as measured by this method, does not coincide with the surface area calculated from the size, shape, and number of particles, i.e. the superficial surface of the particles. It can be seen easily from Mr. Bloecher's own determination on ilmenite-leucoxene concentrate that the surface area measured according to this method may be several hundred times larger than the superficial surface. It is supposed that the surface of cracks, fissures, and pores within the particles also is included in the measured surface. However, this is an assumption which scarcely can be proved and certainly has not been proved. We believe that the mineral engineer could better use a method giving the superficial surface of the particles, as in most cases this surface only is of importance to him. Such is certainly the case when calculating the resistance of the fluid flow through granu- lar materials and the capillary forces of such materials, problems which are of great importance in connection with dewatering, filtration, and pelletizing'" etc. The same may also be the case when studying flotation problems, partly since the quantities of the introduced reagents usually are so small that they can only cover the most accessible surface of the particles, and partly since the molecules of at least the collecting reagents are so large that they cannot enter the smallest cracks and pores. As to the surface, which is of consequence in the application of Rittinger's law of crushing, one is inclined to believe, from theoretical reasons and from the work by Gross and Zimmerley, that the total surface here is the most important one. However, it seems as if in that case the superficial surface was as important as the total surface. Other reasons making the gas adsorption method less suitable for use in the mineral dressing laboratories are that the granular materials there very often are too coarse to be measured by this method, that the experimental technique is rather difficult, and that it takes a long time to measure the specific surface of a sample. Besides, the validity of the method must still be considered questionable. It is thus well known that with different gases one usually gets different values of the specific surface of the same sample, which values, even with such an ideal material as metal foils, can differ as much as about 50 pct.'" The unpredictable behavior of ground movement and subsidence has complicated the problems that attend the extraction of large quantities of ore. Special studies, particularly relating to coal mining, have yielded such a voluminous literature and so many involved controversial theories that a partial review would be difficult. Limited space makes any kind of a review impractical. The features to be considered cover only a relatively small part of the broad problems of ground movement and subsidence, but it is believed that this small part is critical. The practical aspects are important, since they bear directly on safety of mine workings, on recovery of ore and on dilution of ore in block caving and related systems for extracting large quantities of rock. The ground movement to be described occurs outside the vertical boundaries of a caved block in the area that is commonly referred to as being in the "zone of draw." "Draw" is a term that originated in the subsidence problems related to coal mining, and it is defined by a line drawn from the margin of the area caved underground to the most distant fracture at surface on the same side of the caved area as shown in Fig. I.' A line thus drawn is called the cave line, and its angle with respect to the horizontal is the cave angle or angle of draw. It is understood that the line is taken normal to the limit of mining, and in a vertical plane. The prevailing theories as to draw and angle of draw assume that appreciable movement occurred along the cave line, which has been described as a fracture resulting from the shearing action brought about by the weight of the overlying load. Fig. 3 shows diagrammatically the mechanics of ground movement adjacent to an area of subsidence according to the prevailing theory of draw (A, from Royce2) and, for comparison, ground movement observed in the Climax mine (B). The text in Peele's Handbook2 referring to Fig. 2 does not state the meaning of the "original position of top of workable ore" in the rectangular space above "ore in place," and the arrows are not explained. However, this presentation is most concerned with the zones outside the rectangle. According to the prevailing theory, as shown at the extreme left under A, Fig. 2, the vertical tension cracks at surface change at a shallow depth to shear fractures forming the cave line, and it is assumed that appreciable movement takes place along the cave line toward and into the subsiding caved block. The mechanics of ground movement observed in the Climax mine, as shown under B, Fig. 2, does not accord with the prevailing theory, particularly as regards the cave angle and draw. The vertical tension cracks seen at surface die out at depths of 150 to 225 ft. and shear fractures do not develop. Movement is confined at surface to a mantle of rock 50 to roo ft.
