THE second operation in the art of casting, and one of the greatest importance, is that of melting and thoroughly liquefying the materials of which you wish to make your casting. On this operation depends the whole outcome of your intentions and the perfection of your work. Without it, even though you had a great abundance of moulds and vast quantities of bronze, your desires, labor, and expense would all be in vain. In this operation I find on consideration that, in addition to experience, there are three necessities-perhaps indeed four-that must be provided without fail. The first is the furnace or other agent which contains the fire and the metal brought together. The second is the wood or charcoal which is the necessary and proper nutriment of the fire, from whose virtues are derived the greater or lesser forces which, according to their kind, are ready to effect what is required. The third is to have the materials disposed to easy fusion by means of corruption, alloying, or by their own nature. The fourth, as the motivating cause of the whole, could perhaps be listed as the first-this is the ingenuity and good judgment of the worker, together with the bodily exertions not only of himself but also of his helpers in addition. For, besides a certain ordinary caution, it is necessary to pay particular attention, first, to see that the furnaces, machines, ladles, hearths, refineries, and other kinds of instruments or similar vessels be made so as to dispose the metals for melting, and, when melted, that they easily maintain them so. These should also be prepared in such a way that they cannot be injured by the fire, for if they should be damaged the operation would fail. In order to do this, it is first necessary that you arrange the instruments with forethought and action so that the power of the fire can operate. Fire operates on things only when brought together with them in long-continued operation, or when driven by a great force of wind. It burns many things and softens others, but it makes the metals as liquid as water.

The active mines in the Park City district at the present time are the Silver King Coalition, Daly-Judge, Daly West, and Silver King Consolidated. Several other companies, such as the Daly, American Flag, Ontario, etc., are doing considerable development work. In the Silver King Coalition mines the ore is a replacement of a dark siliceous limestone bed, varying in .thickness from 18 in. to several feet. In places the ore has reached a thickness of 25 ft. This limestone bed lies within 100 ft. of the underlying Weber quartzite. There are other lime beds, similar in appearance to this one, in the Park City formation, which is approximately 700 ft. thick; but not one of them has been found to contain any traces of ore. Directly under and in contact with the ore-bearing bed is another, composed of gray lime well studded with dark concretionary nodules; and this one is an unfailing indication of the proximity of the ore-bearing bed. These ore deposits make out from or have connection with some one of the ore-bearing fissures, which were undoubtedly the channels for the circulation of mineral-bearing solutions. It is therefore proper to run prospecting drifts in the fissures, although they seldom contain much ore. As a general rule, drifting in the fissures is not costly. Mining and mucking cost from $2.50 to $4 per foot, and very little timber is required. There are instances, as in the Daly fissure in the Daly-Judge mine, where the expense of keeping drifts open in the fissure is so great that it has proved economical to make the drifts in the foot-wall rock and run crosscuts into the fissure at short intervals. In the Park City mines it is not easy to determine beforehand the best method fir extracting the ore from a newly discovered ore shoot in the bedded deposits. While we may get one dimension from the drift run in the fissure, that will not give us a correct idea as to the other dimensions of the orebody. The fissures here referred to have a N. 35" E.

THE Duquesne property of the Callahan Zinc-Lead Co. is about 20 miles east of Nogales, in southern Arizona. One mine is near the mill, but most of the mill feed is hauled in by truck from a number of small mines. The same sulphides are found in all the ores, in general, but the amounts vary considerably. All ores contain silver, copper, lead and zinc minerals but one mine ships ore high in silver and lead and low in copper and zinc; while another mine ships ore high in copper and zinc, and low in silver and lead. The common sulphides are galena, carrying most of the silver; chalcopyrite; sphalerite, carrying iron in solid solution; and pyrite, in a gangue consisting of limestone, quartz and garnet. Mineralization is fairly coarse. At the present grind of about 66 per cent minus 200 mesh most of the sulphides are liberated. A small amount of chalcopyrite is locked up with the sphalerite and cannot be liberated at an economic grind, and the copper carried into the zinc concentrate with the sphalerite accounts for the comparatively poor recovery of copper in the copper-lead concentrate. PRODUCTION OF TWO CONCENTRATES The milling problem, which was complicated by the extreme variation in the grade of the feed, was first attacked with the idea of producing a silver-copper-lead concentrate and a zinc concentrate, both with satisfactory grades and recoveries. By February I94I, it was felt that these objectives had been attained, when the grades of the various products and the recoveries were as shown in Table I. [ ] A rough outline of the flowsheet and reagents used is as follows: Minus ¾ -in. feed to a 7-ft. by 36-in. Hardinge ball mill working in closed circuit with a 36-in. Wemco classifier. The classifier overflow passes to the second cell of an 8-cell bank of No. 18 Special Denver Sub-A flotation machines (volume, 22.5 cu. ft. per cell). A rougher concentrate is removed from the second to the fifth cells inclusive, and returned to the first cell, which is the cleaner. IT Is well known that the Cottrell process is more easily applied to certain kinds of smoke than to others. The successful Cottrell installations are those treating smokes that carry dust of a mechanical nature; also smoke carrying fume dust that contains an excess of sulfuric acid over that required to combine with the oxides in the dust. But up to the present time the process has not reached a satisfactory economical basis of operation, in the treatment of smoke' containing basic dust. It is not impossible to make a smoke containing basic dust suitable for the process by. humidifying or acidifying. A number of Cottrell plants use these two methods of conditioning smoke previous to Cottrell treatment, which are quite successful, but the use of either results in expensive operation and a substantial loss in metals.. For these reasons, I would say that the baghouse process has not been replaced by the Cottrell process in the treatment of smelter basic smoke. Basic smoke must be given a. preliminary conditioning treatment because the dust is not a conductor of electricity; the water or acid treatment imparts some conductivity to the dust.. The rate at which dust is recovered depends on the proportional amount of power transmitted to the, treater and on the rate at which the smoke passes through; therefore to maintain a maximum constant amount of power across the electrodes of the treater, the same degree of conductivity should prevail, at all times between the surface of the electrodes. For all practical purposes, in the application of this process to lead and copper-smelter smoke, we can consider that the conductivity of the gases is a .constant. The variations in temperature of the smoke have a much greater effect on the solids than on the gases; the only instance where the temperature of the gases plays an important part in the process is at plants using humidifying: The temperature does not affect the conductivity of mechanical dust because such dust has natural conductive properties. However, in the case of smoke carrying acid-fume dust, where the conductivity is imparted to the dust particles by coming into contact with the acid fumes, the temperature is of importance.

In the year just past there were produced in the United States about 170,000,000 tons of sand and gravel. Much of this was pit-run material used for gravelling roads and as railroad ballast on lines that did not carry heavy traffic. But more than half of it was marketed as washed and sized, or graded, material. The methods used for preparing sand and gravel for the market have long been used in ore dressing and, as in ore dressing, depend on differences in the specific gravity of two substances or in the size or weight of particles. But many changes in the design and operation of plants and machines have been necessary. In ore dressing, the concentrate is only a small part of the feed; in sand and gravel washing, it is much the larger part of the feed. In addition, such close work as is needed when concentrating a metallic ore is not needed when washing gravel; the ability to put through a large tonnage is more important, and sizing, which is only a preliminary process in ore dressing, is an end to be attained. Rock crushers are found in most sand and gravel plants and they are used to break up the larger pieces from the deposit (known as boulders and cobbles) which are removed by a scalping screen. The crusher discharge is usually sent back to the scalping screen, the perforations in this screen setting the maximum size of the finished product. Washing Washing is to prepare sand and gravel so that they may be used as aggregates in concrete and wall plaster and in various processes in which impurities would harm the product. At one end of the scale of washed materials may stand ordinary concrete sand, which in some states may contain as much as 3 per cent, of clay and still be used in highway concrete construction. At the other end will stand the silica sand used for making plate glass, which must be washed so clean that the impurities that can be removed by washing do not exceed a few hundredths of a per cent. The Asientos-Tepezala district is in the north of the State of Aguasca-lientes, about 30 miles north of the city of Aguascalientes, the capital. The district is reached by a standard-gage railway on the west side through the junction, Rincon de Romos, which is on the main line of the National Railways of Mexico from El Paso to Aguscalientes. The terminal is Tepezala. On the east side a narrow gage connects Asientos with the junction, San Gil, on the main line, Asientos to San Luis Potosi. Tepezala on the west side of the Asientos hills is about 2 miles from Asientos on the east side. The area between the two mining centers is separated by a low subdued divide which forms the central part of the hills. The district is in a group of isolated hills surrounded by characteristic bolsón plains. The hills rise above the surrounding plains about 6500 to 10,000 ft.; the highest peak is Alta Mira. The two mining districts lie somewhat upon the flanks of the hills at about the same elevation, 7200 ft. The district is an old one and has been known since early in the 17th Century when the mines were worked by the Franciscan Monks. Their mining operations, which were limited to the oxidized ore above the water level, consisted chiefly in extracting silver from the Santa Francisca vein. To judge from the old workings and the remains of surface plant, the operations were on a large scale. By modern mining operations since about 1900, the various mines of the district have been one of the principal sourees of ore for the smelter located at Aguascalientes. Topography The topographic features of the Asientos hills are largely controlled by the character of the underlying rocks. During the Tertiary period, the entire group of hills was probably covered by extrusive volcanic material in the form of cones and lava flows. The central part of these have since been carried away by erosion, so that remnants have been left along the borders of the hills. These remnants form rather conspicuous peaks,

Although his method will give only a rough approximation of the reserves, nevertheless it is much more reliable than the saturation method. The saturation method should not be used when any other method is available. The paper describes a generalized method, which is especially useful in estimating the total resources of a Nation or State. The decline in deliverability of conventional natural gas supplies and the general energy crisis have resulted in national programs directed toward the commercialization of energy conversion technologies. Foremost among these efforts is the gasification of coal. Coal reserves represent our most abundant fossil fuel resource. Its utilization is hampered both by its form value and its pollution qualities. Coal gasification is commercially feasible today and projects requiring hundreds of millions of dollars and years of construction time are underway. This paper provides a perspective for the scope, time, and cost of these venture projects. Resource requirements, plant products, and coal gasification processes are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the effects of coal feedstock and prices on plant economics.

COLLECTIVE bargaining, hereto-fore loudly proclaimed as one of the stout timbers of the Republic, has passed from the picture. The coup de gr[a]ce was struck by the President of the United States when he ignored his vested legal prerogative and seized the steel industry by the dubious authority of, his "inherent powers." Autocratic judgment by a single official replaced arbitration by the steel industry and labor union. This is the outcome of a battle which has been bitterly waged for months in the hazy atmosphere created by well oiled propaganda machines. Prior to government intervention, there was no clear picture of the issues at stake. All parties concerned marshalled their accountants to conjure up figures proving their respective contentions. The results were fed into public relations departments for embellishment and dissemination. Thus, the public was asked to believe on one hand, that the steel worker, who is second only to the coal miner in hourly wages, was entitled to an increase in pay and other benefits. Nothing was said about the effect-of such an increase on the national economy. Industry in turn pointed to declining profits after taxes, but failed to mention the more than a billion dollars spent on plant expansion, in addition to the payment of substantial dividends for 1951. With the intervention of the administration, the immediate issue became clear to freedom-loving Americans. Is the executive branch of the government above the law, or is it supposed to uphold and carry out the .laws of Congress? The present administration forgot that it is a servant of the public and has become despotic. The American people must obliterate this dangerous precedent which has been set by the administration or accept the. ominous consequences of submission. Fortunately, the strongest weapon of the citizen-the ballot -still remains. When democratic procedure is restored, stabilization of the economy will continue to challenge us. This is the main public stake in the steel controversy. Only a solution based on bed-rock democracy will work. If the emergency is real, and we must assume that it is, this is the time for sacrifice. Industry and labor must meet without rancor to resolve wage contracts through collective bargaining. The government role, under emergency conditions, must be to objectively maintain wage, and price ceilings in the interest of stabilization. Political expediency cannot be permitted to' influence these controls. Politics and not the public weal have been the guide lines for too long. We are at the cross roads. By all sober judgment, this is the time for Americans to take a militant interest in their government today. Tomorrow will be too late.

IN general in making such powders, all kinds of gravel, tuff, washed river silt, and similar earths whose grain is fine and lean by nature are good for this operation of casting, either by themselves or in mixture because they are disposed to receive the metals well on account of a certain dryness which they possess. Many kinds are also compounded by means of art. Of these, I shall proceed to tell of all those that experience [119] has taught me to recognize as good. But first I desire that we return to speak of the natural ones because they are real earths and can always be had wherever one may be, and in the necessary quantity. They please me greatly because they are easy to reduce on account of their disposition. A loam is made from these and mixed by beating with wool-cloth cut- tings, spent wash ashes, and horse dung. This is made into cakes and dried. These are then put to bake in a furnace or in some other way and, in fact, are baked very well. Then it is pounded and sifted with a fine sieve, or it is ground in a potter's color mill, or by hand on a porphyry with water, to the fineness that the craftsman desires, or as fine as he can make it. When it has been ground it is again drained free from water and dried out with fire. Then as much magistery of salt is taken as will moisten it. It is dried and pounded again and passed through a sieve. When it has been made as desired in this way it is moistened again before use with water, urine, or vinegar just enough so that it holds together when it is squeezed in the fist. Then, when it has been brought to this point, it is moulded as you will hear. Powders are also made of crushed brick, tripoli, vine ashes, tiles, and glazed drainpipes, or burned emery, calcined tin, straw, and of burned paper and horse dung as well as of young ram's-horn ashes and many other things. The goodness of all these depends on three things; namely, on receiving the metal well, on being so fine as to be almost impalpable, and on their being made .with a magistery that renders them hard and strong when they are dry. In addition to these powders I have used another when I needed it, and it has succeeded well every time I made it. To make this. It is particularly interesting at this time to notice the recommendations of F. L. Bishop, clean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering as to the types of engineers required and the training that should be given each type. Dr. Bishop's recommendations, which follow, are substantially the same as the first two recommendations made by resolution at the National Conference recently held to discuss commercial engineering problems. This provided business training for the engineer arid engineering training for commercial enterprises. Dr. Bishop says: "The first type is that of the man who may be called a technician, who is highly trained in science and mathematics, who possess the instinct of the research man and who can devote his entire time to highly technical research problems, either in the research laboratories which are now rapidly being developed in the large industries, or by applying the results of his research to engineering science. For the training of this type of man, there is needed the best of scientific equipment, the members of the faculty must be those who are intimately interested in research problems, and the student himself must have what is sometimes called a mathematical mind. It is doubtful if this type of nan can be developed in a four-year course under existing conditions. In fact, it is probable that such a man can be developed only M. a school which has a thorough graduate department. "The second type which seems to be demanded by the industries is the man who has a broad general knowledge of engineering subjects and can apply that knowledge in an effective way in present engineering problems. He must have ability to command men, a knowledge of the applications of economic principles to industries, and a broad training in the so-called humanities, since he is the man in contact with men of other types in other fields of human activities. He should not be a research man, his training in mathematics need not be of necessity so extensive as that of the research technician, but his understanding of engineering problems should be extensive. Such a man cannot be trained in the ordinary schools because of the artificial conditions which of necessity exist in academic institutions. He must become familiar with the industries while yet, a student in order that he may understand thoroughly the application of his theoretical courses in school and their application to industries, and also that he may become familiar in the formative period of life with the problems of labor and the human factor in engineering. It is in the development of this type of man, who is to become. the manager and operating head of our large manufacturing industries, that the advantages to be derived from the cooperative system of engineering education are needed."

ANYONE who wishes to make the patterns for statues in order to cast them later in bronze, even though he himself is the artificer who made them, must take many things into consideration: first, whether they are large or small, and whether they are wholly round or only in part; then of what material they are made, for the way that can be followed if they are of wax cannot be used if they are of clay, wood, marble, or even of plaster; likewise he must consider whether or not it has irons inside to support it. There is also a great difference in facility if the support is placed more in. one way than in another. Great consideration should be given to whether it is to be made hollow or solid. If you have not been the workman yourself, you must at least have been an active helper in this and in every other part in order to be able to observe everything without a fault. For if they are large it is necessary to make their moulds in pieces, with marks and measurements so that you can replace them-at will exactly in the same order and in the same places after they have been taken out. But if you are the artificer [as well as sculptor] the process is made easier. Taking the ordinary way and, over an iron, make out of well beaten moulding clay, compounded with cloth clippings a core exactly as the statue is to be or however large you wish the hollow to be. Dry and bake it. On top of this work the wax, thickening it all over as much as you wish the bronze to be and finish it completely, remembering to arrange that the base may come out solid with bronze so as to support the whole work. Then take some rods of hammered bronze one dito thick and one palmo long. Pass these throughs the thickness of the wax and fasten them in several places in the core of clay that you made. [81] Do it so that they, project out of the wax a good three or four dita. These are, put in so that when the wax is removed the core is held in the middle of the mould that forms the outer part, and this outer part is held by the inner part, namely the core, so that the mould may not move in any part from its place even when it is handled. This done, take some of that clay made with well-prepared cloth clippings as I taught you, and mix with it if you wish some wash ashes or

T. H. Alden and R. L. Fleischer (General Electric Research Laboratory)— The authors' results indicate clearly and, we believe, significantly that during tensile deformation the surface layers of an aluminum crystal are hardened more severely than the interior of the crystal. A probable explanation of this effect, as the authors indicate, is that dislocations in the primary slip system may be obstructed at the surface or, it should be added, near the surface. The intent of this discussion is to show that the oxide film on aluminum is not likely to be responsible for this effect, but that the results can be understood if it is assumed the secondary slip is more active in the surface layers than in the interior. Prior study has shown that the principal mechanical effect of an oxide film on a single crystal is to raise the yield stress while leaving the rate of strain hardening during the initial deformation relatively unaffected.33 Since the yield stress is unchanged during polishing in the present case, we conclude that continual removal of the oxide film exerts a small effect on the plastic hardening.* It appears that the hardening interactions are occurring not only at the immediate surface, but to an appreciable depth below it, although with decreasing severity. For example, Kramer and Demer found that with removal of 0.004 in. from a specimen, the easy glide region was extended somewhat; but the yield stress did not decrease. The initial yield stress was recovered only after 0.041 in. was removed. Since a very brief polish would permit dislocations trapped behind a surface film to run out,34 extra dislocations must, instead, be trapped to a considerable depth below the surface. The same conclusion is drawn from the observation of decreasing hardening slope with increasing surface removal rates. If the hardening interactions were only at the immediate surface, a full softening effect would be observed at some small removal rate. The view is taken here that strain hardening is principally caused by small amounts of secondary slip.35 The secondary dislocations will interact in various ways with the primaries, interfering with their motion and causing them to accumulate in the crystal. Prior studies of easy glide have shown Diehl's model of hardening to be qualitatively consistent with the effects of impurities,36 of temperature,36 and of crystal size.37 On this basis the enhanced hardening of the surface layers in aluminum arises from increased secondary slip at and to some depth below the surface. Selective removal of this hardened layer is expected to decrease the measurable "bulk" hardening, the effect increasing with the removal rate and decreasing with the applied strain rate. We suggest that the stress on secondary systems is raised by the bending moments arising from interactions with the grips during the deformation. This stress from the grips has been shown to be a maximum37 near the surface, and hence, increased secondary slip should result. Prior investigations of grip effect:; indicate that as the grip stresses are raised by changing the crystal shape, the easy glide slope increases while the extent of easy glide decreases.38-40 It has been shown also that bending moments superimposed during tensile testing may either decrease easy glide, when supporting the moments caused by gripping, or increase it, when cancelling the gripping moments.38 This interpretation of the authors' results, emphasizing the special importance of secondary slip near the surface, is also consistent with the earlier results of Rosi.41 Copper crystals alloyed with silver in the surface layer show greatly increased easy glide compared with pure copper. In addition, the easy glide slope is reduced. The effect of bulk alloying in extending easy glide has been well established and has been interpreted as indicating the relative difficulty of secondary slip in alloy crystals. Since non-basal glide is difficult in zinc crystals, the effects of surface removal during deformation may be less important. Experiments to test this idea are in progress. I. R. Kramer and L. J. Demer (authors' reply)—The authors wish to thank Dr. Alden and Dr. Fleischer for their discussion. Our interpretation of the data in the paper is that dislocation motion is obstructed by "debris" which starts to form at the surface and extends towards the interior of the crystal with further plastic deformation. The fact that we did not find a reversion from Stage II to Stage I by surface removal shows that in Stage II the "debris" fills the entire cross-section of the specimen. Drs. The element silicon, with its usual partner, oxygen, plays the same role relative to inorganic materials as carbon and hydrogen play with respect to living organisms. The crystallographic structure of silicon dioxide (SiO2) consists of one atom of silicon well-nigh inseparably bonded to four contiguous atoms of oxygen, a gas of but slightly more than half its atomic weight, forming a three-dimensional network of SiO4 tetrahedra (Dietz, 1968). This wispy arrangement is the fabric of the mineral quartz which is one of the harder, more abrasive, and chemically stable raw materials to be found in Mother Nature's cupboard. Most of us are vaguely familiar with the observation that nearly 60% of the lithosphere to an approximate depth of 10 miles is composed of these two elements, which proportion actually rises to about 75% if the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere are included (Parker, 1967). Elemental silicon is a brittle steel-gray metalloid with a density of 2.42 and does not occur in nature. In its limited commercial form, which is still brittle and metallic in appearance, its density drops to 2.33. It combines with oxygen to form the gaseous oxide SiO, or the solid dioxide Si02 (analogous to its congener carbon in CO and CO2); a tetrachloride SiCI4 (analogous to CC14); or, combining with oxygen and one or more metal ions, forms the largest rock-making family of all, the silicates. Further, next to the feldspars, quartz is the most abundant known mineral and, in some form or another, accounts for roughly 12% of surficial terrestrial rock. It is this so-called "free silica" to which your attention is chiefly directed in this chapter. In any such consideration of silica, its several crystalline phases with their attendant differing physical properties appear worthy of delineation. Alpha quartz is the only one of this interesting polymorphic family that is thermodynamically stable at normal pressures and temperatures up to about 573°C. The low phases of tridymite and cristobalite can exist in the so-called metastable state below 117° to 200ºC but seldom occur in nature in these two different crystal forms (Sosman, 1965). Opaline silica, now considered by most researchers to be a variety of cristobalite, occurs in abundance and is the only exception. The three remaining polymorphs, keatite, coesite, and stishovite, also are metastable under ambient conditions. Keatite, however, is not known to occur naturally and has only been synthesized in the laboratory. The other two have been identified in submicron sizes and in microscopic amounts, occurring naturally as a result of high order shock-wave pressures generating quite elevated temperatures --such as might accompany the impact of a large meteorite on a hard sandstone terrain (Chao et al., 1962). An intriguing characteristic of these silica minerals, and one which has very practical applications, is their extremely variable densities. The classic 2.65 specific gravity of alpha quartz drops to 2.20 in tridymite, cristobalite, and lechatelierite (natural silica glass), as well as in many man-made glasses of commerce which are merely noncrystalline or amorphous solids in the form of super-cooled liquids which can no longer change their shapes (Pauling, 1950). It rises again to 2.50 and 2.93 for keatite and coesite, respectively, and finally becomes a reported 4.35 for stishovite-nearly a 50% range in density for the known physical combinations that silica naturally assumes (Frondel, 1962; Konnert et al., 1973; Pecora, 1960). Pursuing its esthetic aspects, briefly, silica is well-represented among gem stones which, to qualify as such, must have the attributes of beauty, durability, and rarity (Jahns, 1983). It is shown that conditions suitable for the conversion of straight dislocations into helices are common in crystals hardened either through long-range dislocation interaction or by jog formation on dislocation lines. For dislocations other than screw dislocations or dislocations nearly screw in orientation, helices can be formed with the aid of core difhsion at temperatures low relative to the melting point of the material. It is assumed that, once formed, helices will degenerate into dislocation tangles. THE dislocation tangle is one major dislocation arrangement observed by the transmission electron microscope which had not been predicted previously from dislocation theory. Since first being observed, the tangle itself has become important in applied dislocation theory. The Cambridge school (P. Hirsch) bases part of its theory of work hardening upon this phenomenon.' In spite of the fact that the tangle obviously is a structure of prime importance to a cold-worked crystal, until recently relatively little attention has been paid to the question of exactly why or how tangles arise. It was generally assumed at first that cross slip and perhaps jog formation will lead to tangles. However Wilsdorf and schmitz2 concluded that cross slip cannot markedly contribute to the tangles. The Wilsdorfs and Maddin3'* have proposed that tangles arise by means of prismatic dislocation loops and superjogs which are produced by a precipitation of point defects. Dislocations with superjogs or which have joined with prismatic loops are themselves dislocation sources and they can produce new dislocations, a process they call "mushrooming", which then tangle with each other. There is no question that the Wilsdorfs et al. mechanism as well as the cross slip one can pro- duce tangles. However these may not be the only paths leading to tangle formation. In this paper we wish to consider another way tangles can form. Our work will be based on the theory of dislocation screw We wish to show that whenever a crystal is cold-worked there always is present a "driving force" leading to helix formation and thus to tangle formation. We do not expect to observe well-developed, regular helices in cold-worked metals. Rather we would expect that after a helix is formed random interactions with nearby dislocations will cause a well-developed helical dislocation to go over into an irregular form. A dislocation tangle is, of course, a grouping of dislocations with irregular forms. Therefore we feel that, in accounting for the formation of dislocation tangles, it is sufficient to show that many dislocations in a cold-worked crystal will take on helical form. The crucial step is helix formation. In order to have a straight dislocation assume a helical form, diffusion of vacancies, or interstitials, must occur. Our discussion of tangle formation therefore will be limited to crystals which have been deformed at temperatures ranging from about one fifth to half their absolute melting point. In this tem per a ture range appreciable core diffusion is possible. (There is no problem in explaining tangle formation at temperatures greater than half the melting point. At such temperatures dislocation climb through a bulk diffusion of point defects gives an extra degree of freedom to dislocation motion. This extra freedom of motion makes tangle formation easy.) At temperatures much below one fifth the absolute melting temperature diffusion processes are sufficiently slow that helix formation does not occur. Of course helix or tangle formation could occur in material deformed at very low tempera-tures which was subsequently warmed in order to make the thin specimen necessary for electron-microscope examination. Since within the temperature range of approximately one fifth to half the melting temperature the diffusion of point defects in the core of the dislocation is rapid, we can reasonably assume that within

A general method for determining the geometric properties of structures composed of particles which are all the same shape and size is presented. The application of the method requires a knowledge of' the qualitative shape of the particles in the structure, ad a maximum of three simple counting measurenzents, which are made on a representative plane section taken through the structure. It is also shown that the number of different kinds of measurements necessary JOY the complete description of the structure can be decreased if some independent information about individual particles is available. The geometric properties that can be determined quantitatiz~ely from counting measurements for susch structures are size, shape, number, surface area, vlolume, ad such extensive properties as volume Mction and surface area per unit volume. THE simplest kinds of measurements that may be made on a metallographic section are counting measurements. There are three such simple counting measurements, which are determined by sampling the microstructure with a point, a line, and an area. The first of these, the point count, is probably the most familiar among metallographers. The second count, the number of intersections a test line makes with particle outline, is somewhat more recent in its origin and application. The third counting measurement, the number of particle sections observed in unit area of the plane of polish, has long been used in the estimation of grain sizes. The real utility of these three counting measurements lies in the fact that they are rigorously and unambiguously related to certain extensive geometric properties of the three-dimensional structure of which the metallographic section is a sample. These relationships will be reviewed briefly below. Of somewhat secondary importance to the fundamental relationships is the observation that, if some simplifying assumptions about the geometry of the three-dimensional structure are introduced, manipulation of the counting measurements gives a more complete description of the structure. Specifically, in addition to the extensive properties which these measurements rigorously estimate, the number of particles, their size, and their shape may be determined. The purpose of the present paper is to explore the consequences of introducing the assumption of constant size and shape. A later paper will deal with the estimation of geometric properties of structures which may be characterized by a two-parameter size distribution. It should be mentioned that the introduction of this simplest of assumptions, while clearly not generally justified in metallurgical structures, is not without precedent. For example, many estimates of the number of particles per unit volume of structure, based upon a single counting measurement, are scattered throughout the literature.13 Virtually all of these developments assume a constant particle shape, e.g., spherical or polyhydral, and constant size. That such an assumption is necessary is evident from the fact that, for more general structures, more than a single parameter is required to describe the three-dimensional structure, so that the determination of a single parameter on a section would be insufficient to specify the structure. Similar developments for the estimation of particle size from a single counting measurement, e.g., routine grain-size determinations, make the same very limiting assumption,435 but have nonetheless proven of practical value. The present paper embodies a generalized approach to the development of relationships among the two-dimensional counting measurements and the three-dimensional geometry of the structure, subject to the assumption of constant particle size and shape. It is the hope of the author that by presenting the relationships and the assumptions involved in dealing with this approximation, in a single, unified treatment, the reader may be impressed with the usefulness of the counting measurements, may be guided in their application to the estimation of details of the geometry in specific structures in which he may be interested, and may be moved to apply the results, with understanding, to new structural problems. INTRODUCTION The Climax Mine is a property of Climax Molybdenum Company, a division of AMAX Inc. Climax is located in the central part of the Colorado Mineral Belt on the west slope of the Tenmile Range, Lake County, Colorado at 3,425' m. above sea level. Climax Mine, the largest single producer of molybdenum in the free world, has been a cornerstone of mining in the State of Colorado for many years. Before molybdenum was known, the early hunters of gold and silver laid their hands on the outcrops of the Climax deposit and left it as low quality lead or graphite without much value. Today, 44,000 TPD of ore is extracted from the heart of Bartlett Mountain. The molybdenum, separated from the ore, is vital for mankind, being used for everything from fertilizer to fine components of aerospace ships, because of its valuable physical and chemical properties. The operations at Climax have never remained static. Constant demand for the "gray gold", and technological advancements, have converted Climax into an "open book of technology", where learning the still-hidden secrets of mining is a continuing process. (All figures related to tons are metric tons) BRIEF HISTORY The mine produced its first molybdenum ore in 1918. It was shut down in 1919, resumed production in 1924, and has been in continuous production since that time. During World War 11, a peak of 20,000 tons per day was reached, then tonnage dropped from 1945 to 1950. Since 1951, production has been in- creasing, reaching a peak of 46,000 tons per day during the month of June, 1980. Early mining used shrinkage stoping. Block caving using the grizzly system was introduced in the early 1930's. Caving methods were improved through empirical studies of rock behavior and by trial and error, evolving a very efficient mining method by the late 1940's. This form of continuous retreat panel caving, with small modifications, is still used today, and has made the Climax Mine one of the biggest underground mines in the world. The Climax Mine, synonymous with molybdenum, was essentially an underground mine until 1973 when the open pit was introduced. Since then, both mining methods have operated successfully. Current production is 60% from underground, and the remaining from the open pit. Climax has been in continuous operation for 56 years, and as of December 31, 1980, more than 386 million tons of ore have been mined. The orebody is not fully defined, and at the present mining rate, the known life span of the mine will be to the year 2020. GEOLOGY The Climax deposit is a large low-grade porphyry molybdenum deposit somewhat similar to porphyry copper deposits, with a well- mineralized quartz molybdenum stock work sys- tem. It lies within the pre-Cambrian granites and schists and the Tertiary Climax porphyry. The age of mineralization is thought to be mid-Tertiary and is characterized by fracture filling and replacement through silicification. The main economic mineral is molybdenum, with pyrite, cassiterite and wolframite as by-products. Fluorite and topaz also occur, but are not recovered at this

DIAMOND drilling has advanced and expanded during the past few years. Along with this increase there has been a marked trend to rely more and more upon drilling for the outlining of ore for reserve purposes. This is especially true underground, where men have not been available for opening up ore by crosscuts, drifts and raises. During the recent heavy call upon known ore reserves, more drilling has been done for exploration and it has become expedient to drill longer lateral holes from underground and deeper holes both from surface and from exploration headings in the mines. Furthermore, these deeper holes have to be drilled closely enough to warrant calculation of "probable" if not "proven" ore, from the results obtained therefrom. Interpretation of diamond-drill results has become more precise and reliable with the growing knowledge and understanding of the geologic structures that control the geometry of ore distribution, and this has broadened the field of usefulness of the drill. All of this has created a necessity and a demand for more accurate control of the hole as to direction, a more precise and reliable method of surveying for position, and a need for better and more complete core recovery, as well as larger cores, to provide an adequate sample. At depth the control becomes more difficult and, at the same time, more important. CONTROL A close study of drilling in various parts of the world for a period of more than 20 years has brought to light one definite rule, practically invariable; namely, that diamond-drill holes tend to deviate into a position normal to any structure existing in the rocks, such as bedding, schistosity, gneissosity, or even parting or jointing-even if the hole is started at almost any angle other than parallel with the structure. It also appears that the better developed the structure is, the more quickly will the hole get into a position perpendicular to it. It has often been said that there is a tendency for holes to "drift" in the direction of rotation. This is obviously untrue, for in a vertical hole the measure of deviation would depend upon the azimuth chosen as zero, and there is an infinite number of choices. It has been proved, however, that in homogeneous rocks there is a tendency for the hole to corkscrew, and that the direction of the spiral is the same as the direction of rotation. This may account for the belief that holes drift in that direction. Some tests have been made using right-hand and left-hand rods, and these show that no matter what the direction of rotation the hole will swing into a position perpendicular to the structure. Methods of Control The foregoing empirical rule may be used as an indirect method of control. If the prevailing structure is known, it may be advantageous to start the hole as nearly normal to it as possible, for the nearer the direction of the hole is to this ideal, the straighter it will remain. This, of course, is not always practical and in some cases is impossible. Usually such a

Open pits and quarries are the major sources of all hard rock tonnages mined today. Normally, ore is fractured from the pit bench face by blasting and then truck-hauled to a primary crusher on the pit rim for conveying to the concentrator; overburden (or waste) is generally truck- hauled from the pit to dump areas. This system of truck haulage of blasted ore and waste accounts for some 25 to 50% of total mining costs in a typical open pit operation and commonly is the largest single cost factor. In an effort to reduce these costs mining companies are continually replacing their older and smaller trucks with larger ones and at the same time are studying conversions to conveyor haulage, since this method of transport seems to offer possibilities of lower costs per ton of material handled. In these studies it seems logical to consider installing these conveyors as close as possible to the mining face for maximum use of conveyors and minimum use of trucks, since a conveyor is much less labor intensive than a trucking system. However, direct loading onto a conveyor near the retreating bench face is impractical because of excessive lump size. Consequently, it is conventional practice to load the blasted rock into trucks at the face for haulage to the crusher. After crushing, the rock is fed onto a conveyor. The closer the crusher is to the mine, or if it is in the mine, the shorter the truck haul and the greater the potential for cost saving. At first appearance, in-pit conveying might seem to be an obvious solution, yet many mining companies have considered such a move while few have implemented it. To determine why, it is necessary to consider the factors influencing such a decision. A conveyor system tends to be capital intensive but can have a lower operating cost per ton than trucks. Trucks, on the other hand, tend to cost less to buy but more to operate; thus, economics tend to favor the conveyor if it can be operated close to capacity and if a sufficiently large tonnage can be passed over the system to mitigate the effect of its high capital cost. In a typical hard-rock, open-pit mine it is necessary for a variety of reasons to mine several faces of both ore and waste at the same time; and any mining system must have sufficient flexibility to permit loading from one face or another at short notice. This makes it impractical to place small mobile crushers and their consequent network of conveyors at each working face. To date no alternative has been found to using trucks for bringing all rock of the same class to some convenient marshalling point from which it may be crushed and conveyed from the pit. Another advantage of trucking when compared to conveying is flexibility. Many mines wish to deliver their shot-rock to different locations, depending on the mineral content. For instance, a typical copper mine may have to simultaneously mine milling ore, leach ore,
