AT present it is impossible to estimate closely the amount of oil obtainable from a given area of land. However, after the completion of a few properly distributed prospect wells, one can calculate the approximate yield of the sands penetrated, with a probable error of say 50 per cent. Even rough predictions of this kind are of value in, large operations. Without wells upon it, one can never be absolutely certain that an area will produce any oil whatever, and one can only indulge in wild guesses of the probable productive area, before the geological structure has been carefully contoured and the top of the basal water plotted on a map. This requires wells. At times it is desirable to form an idea of the possible yield of oil in advance of drilling, as in cases where the price asked for undeveloped land seems too high, but where the probability of finding oil is furnished by neighboring development, supported by the geology. In such cases the most one can do is to make an estimate of possible maximum yield, which may of course far exceed results, and which is of use mainly in the prevention of excessive initial investment. The method is very significant in a general way, as in regions like the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming, where the productive sands in the Cretaceous shale are so few and so thin and fine that they cannot develop very great production, although the high quality of the oil probably will counterbalance this defect sufficiently to give local profit in favorable areas. Reservoir Capacity of Sands.-The porosity of a stratum is the measure of its maximum reservoir capacity for liquids and gases. The porosity may be determined experimentally and must be used in connection with the total volume of the sand.

The building of reverberatory furnaces (Fortschaufelungsofen) where ordinary brick, fire-brick and iron are comparatively cheap, is quite a different matter from the building of such furnaces in isolated camps, where proper material is only to be obtained at high cost and with long delays. Time is always a large factor in metallurgical operations, and the metallurgist may find himself in a position where it becomes necessary to erect apparatus and have it running in less time than it would take to obtain material from outside. It is here that he must make use of makeshifts. In Mexico, one of the most important of these is the alluseful adobe. Employed from prehistoric times, it still has its sphere of application in a surprisingly large number of instances requiring an article that can be quickly and cheaply produced. It is quite possible to erect serviceable reverberatory furnaces with no other materials than adobes, stone and wood. The old Mexican smelting shaft-furnace was an example of what can be done with adobes, and the large number of ruins of this class of furnace scattered through the mining districts of Mexico are silent testimony to the genius of a people who demonstrated their capability of adapting material at hand to their needs. The present paper will describe briefly the construction of an adobe reverberatory furnace which is giving good results, can be quickly erected at a low cost, and, if properly built and handled, will last a long time. The material being simply sun-dried, it naturally follows that the construction must be quite heavy. The adobes should be evenly made, with just sufficient straw to hold them together, and not too large in size (9 in. wide, 18 in. long and 4 in. thick

(Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) Iv taking up this subject it is first necessary to define our terms. Efficiency, in its engineering usage, means the ratio between actual and theoretical results, and efficiency-records thus involve the use of scientifically determined standards with which all results are compared. Scientific management is the methods used in increasing efficiency, and includes the use of efficiency-records. Effeciency-records do not alone constitute scientific management, but they are necessary to it, and any so-called system of management which is not based upon standards and standardization is fundamentally wrong. An efficient management and efficiency-methods in management are not the same thing. There are some people who have an instinctive genius for management and accomplish results without exactly knowing how they do it. Such a manager may obtain a very high efficiency without the aid of scientifically determined standards. On the other hand, it sometimes happens that poor results will accompany the use of efficiency-records, clue to a weak or indifferent management, which fails to make use of the information acquired. Efficiency-records are only a tool, and like other tools are worthless unless used. The ordinary cost, sheet and production-statement do not go far enough. They tell what has been done, but give no information as to how well it has been done. It is true that the man who is familiar with the industry and the plant in question may draw inferences and form a general idea of good work or bad work, but it can only be a very general and hazy idea. Comparisons with previous records or records of other plants are unsatisfactory, since there is nothing to show the cause of the differences.

Freeman, the English historian, said that he had learned from Macaulay "never to be afraid of using the same word or name over and over again if by that means anything could be added to clearness or force. Macaulay never goes. on, like some writers, talking about ' the former ' and 'the latter ', 'he ', 'she ', 'it), and 'they’, through clause after clause, while his reader has to look back to see which of several persons it is that is so darkly referred to". He might have learned also from Macaulay that a preposition makes a feeble ending for a serious statement. How often do you hear 'the former' and 'the latter' in conversation? Good conversation is a guide not to be disdained. When you must use 'the latter ', do not confuse it with 'the last '. Cheap labor, cheap fuel, and cheap transport are essential, the latter [last] being particularly important in base-metal mining. The apparatus may be used to determine such gases as hydrogen sulphide, chlorine, oxides of nitrogen and some others, as well as sulphur dioxide. In the case of the latter two, etc. The two last mentioned are "sulphur dioxide" and "some others". He should have stated which two, and he should have avoided that wretched phrase "in the case of ". Pinning may be partly prevented by use of chalk, oil, or turpentine. The latter [last] is beat. "Partly prevented" is a poor phrase. 'Prevented' is a word that does not lend itself readily to modification. He means ' checked ' or 'corrected '. These steps are necessary to produce the gas, crude oil, and ammonia, the latter [last] of which is in solution in the water obtained along with the oil.

EyRing'S general theory of shear rates as a function of the properties of molecular units of flow is outlined and applied to the creep of metals. This theory regards the unit molecular processes involved in the flow of matter as typical chemical reactions requiring an energy of activation in order to proceed. The externally applied stresses are assumed to influence the rate of flow solely by lowering the activation energy for flow in one direction and raising that for flow in the other, owing to the work that is done by or against the external forces in going from the normal to the activated state. The rates of flow in the two directions are then no longer equal arid there is a net, macroscopically observable flow in one direction. This is understood to be the physical basis for the well-known exponential dependence of the creep rate on the stress. The amount by which the activation energy is raised and lowered by a given external stress is directly related to the molecular dimensions of the unit of flow, so that some insight into these call be found from the behavior of the strain rate with changing stress. When Eyring's equation is applied to the flow of ordinary liquids, such as water or benzene, it has been found from the values of the constants required to fit the observed data that the unit molecular process here involves the passage of single molecules by one another. In metallic creep, on the other hand, the unit molecular process is shown probably to involve the shear of rather large blocks of material (100 to 1000 or more atoms on a side). This agrees with present ideas of crystal flow by means of dislocations such as have been presented by Taylor, Oroaan, and Polanyi, as opposed to flow by a mechanism related to that taking place in atomic diffusion. The dimensions of the dislocations are found to depend markedly on the temperature. The questions of why some metals are so much softer than others, the effects of impurities on hardness, the softness of single crystals, and the role of self-diffusion in creep are considered in the light of the theory and it is shown how answers to these questions (and others similar) might be obtained by use of the theory.

THE remarkable advance in the Science of Mineralogy, during the years that have elapsed since this Text-Book was first issued in 1877, has made it necessary, in the preparation of a new edition, to rewrite the whole as well as to add much new matter and many new illustrations. The work being designed chiefly to meet the wants of class or private instruction, this object has at once determined the choice of topics discussed, the order and fullness of treatment and the method of presentation. In the chapter on. Crystallography, the different types of crystal forms are described under the now accepted thirty-two groups classed according to their symmetry. The names given to these groups are based, so far as possible, upon the characteristic form of each, and are intended also to suggest the terms formerly applied in accordance with the principles of hemihedrism. The order adopted is that which alone seems suited to the demands of the elementary student, the special and mathematically simple groups of the isometric system being described first. Especial prominence is given to the "normal group" under the successive systems, that is, to the group which is relatively of most common occurrence and which shows the highest degree of symmetry. The methods of Miller are followed as regards the indices of the different forms and the mathematical calculations. In the chapters on Physical and Chemical Mineralogy, the plan of the former edition is retained of presenting somewhat fully the elementary prin¬ciples of the science upon which the mineral characters depend; this is par¬ticularly true in the department of Optics. The effort has been made to give the student the means of becoming practically familiar with all the modern methods of investigation now commonly applied. Especial attention is, therefore, given to the optical properties of crystals as revealed by the micro¬scope. Further, frequent references are introduced to important papers on the different subjects discussed, in order to direct the student's attention to the original literature. The Descriptive part of the volume is essentially an abridgment of the Sixth Edition of Dana's System of Mineralogy, prepared by the author (1892). To this work (and future Appendices) the student is, therefore, referred for fuller descriptions of the crystallographic and optical properties of species, for analyses, lists of localities, etc.; also for the authorities for data here quoted. Bituminous coal piled in heaps or bins frequently undergoes a process of spontaneous heating as the result of the absorption of oxygen. It seems probable that the first absorption of oxygen by coal which has not previously been exposed to the air may occur as a condensation or a combination of oxygen in some form which does not result in the production of carbon dioxide, but slow combustion soon begins. The absorption of oxygen is accompanied by an increase of temperature, and this by an increased rapidity of absorption; hence the dangerous condition proceeds from bad to worse, until the kindling point is reached, unless the process is interrupted. A dangerous rise of temperature can be prevented by excluding oxygen, by increasing the bulk of coal in proportion to its surface exposed, or by circulating enough air to dissipate the heat produced. The storage of coal, in practice, varies from almost complete exclusion of oxygen, by storing under water, to such freedom of access as exists when the coal is stored in open piles. Oxygen available for absorption by coal is supplied by the air in the interstices between lumps and by additional air which may enter the pile through circulation. The size of the coal largely affects both of these supplies; for if the fragments are small the spaces between them constitute a small percentage of the total volume, and little oxygen will be available unless the circulation of air brings in a fresh supply, while with large fragments the percentage is relatively large; circulation also is much easier through a pile of coarse lumps. In the case of lump coal, although a large amount of air may be present, the exposed surface is comparatively small and there is little opportunity for the absorption of oxygen to be so rapid as to cause dangerous heating. Attempts have been made to prevent heating by allowing a sufficient circulation of air to carry off the heat generated; obviously this method cannot be applied to fine sizes nor mixed sizes. When storing coal at the University of Illinois, an attempt has been made to use so much fine coal and to pack it so thoroughly as to prevent circulation of air, while also reducing the original air in the pile so as to prevent heating. The Role of the Operator The ultimate objective of any installation is to be able to accomplish the useful work that it was originally designed for. The operator needs a tool that he can both operate effectively and maintain efficiently. The overall design and subsequent installation of a comminution circuit should be a marriage of good engineering practice and practicality. Since the operator must operate and maintain his equipment, his input into the design and installation is vital to its ultimate success. The design of a crushing or grinding circuit is dependent upon many factors including flowsheet design, equipment selection, physical layout, space restrictions, climatic restrictions and considerations for future expansion. The operator must live on a day-to-day basis with the results of the final design and installation. The most satisfactory operation will result when the operator has a major input into each of the criteria that are used to define the final design and installation. The operator referred to is not only the mining company or organization that is having the installation built for its specific use but, more specifically, the person or persons that will actually be responsible for its daily operation and maintenance. Future references to the "operator" will include those individuals with that daily reponsibility. The operator's input into the installation of the circuit is of equal importance to his input into the design. The engineering organization which puts together all of the various design drawings for circuit installation is generally restricted to trying to get all of the details onto a multitude of 24" x 36" two dimensional drawings with a few isometric drawings thrown in. It's almost impossible to get all of the details of a final installation onto all of the drawings, and field modifications are necessary to make everything fit properly. In a multilevel installation, such as a grinding or crushing circuit, it is difficult to envision space requirements to adequately operate and maintain the various pieces of equipment simply by looking at a set o£ drawings. For some designs it is helpful to build a scale model so that a more realistic view of what the installation will look like can be seen. BEHIND the contrasting liquid-fuel technologies of Germany and the United States lie the basic differences of scarcity and abundance. The chemists and engineers of each nation have developed processes that accommodate available raw materials. In the United States, processing is based on an abundant supply of petroleum, which is refined into a variety of fuels and lubricants. Germany has little indigenous petroleum but has a readily available supply of coal that can be converted into liquid fuels and lubricants. As a result, in Germany several basic processes have been developed for the conversion of coal into synthesis gas (carbon monoxide and hydrogen). In turn, this gas is processed into products. As a normal function of its researches into petroleum processing, the petroleum industry in the United States has made careful studies of various conversion and synthesis techniques. A number of oil companies are carrying out independent development programs with the aim of synthesizing hydro- carbon products that can be marketed at a price that will compete with the price of refined petroleum products. American oil companies hope to perfect synthesis processes that will directly benefit the consumer. A good example of progress in these terms is the synthesis plant at Brownsville, Texas, which is based on the conversion of natural gas to synthetic fuels and other valuable products. When this plant is operated at near capacity, it is expected that the products will be able to compete favorably for the consumer dollar. The complete gasification of coal is a technique well rooted in history. As a controlled process on a small scale, it goes back centuries. As a practical technique on a commercial scale, it dates back to 1839, when "producer gas" appeared in Germany for limited industrial use. By 1873, "water gas," or "city gas" as it is sometimes called, was being manufactured commercially in the United States for use in heaters and stoves. The water-gas process was the cornerstone for modern synthesis. To older methods that were concerned only with carbon and oxygen reactions, it added hydrogen by means of steam. Thus far the goal of conversion was to produce gas for heating, lighting, industrial use, and cooking. The long step forward to synthesis was made in 1927, when Germany started to make gasoline from coal by means of the revolutionary Bergius hydrogenation process. The principles of the caving system, as they apply to mining soft iron-ore deposits, are well known, as this method has been in use for many years. It is, however, necessary to give a general description of it before describing the Athens method. The shaft and surface equipment should be placed at a sufficient distance from the orebody, so that the caving and pulling of the surface will not disturb the operations of the mine. Levels are started at the proper intervals, and when raises are completed, slicing commences at the top of the orebody and progresses downward. The necessary precautions are taken to avoid the occurrence of large open rooms and it is customary to break sufficient capping to form a mat to prevent heavy falls of ground from crushing through to the lower sublevels and endangering the lives of the workmen. Slicing is continued, and when sufficient width and length are undercut, the capping commences to cave, and in time a settlement occurs at the surface. As soon as this caving commences, the pressure on the timber increases; after it extends to the surface, the amount of pressure has a certain relation to the depth. In other words, the pressure increases with the depth, but not in direct proportion. At great depths, such as are found at the Athens, 2500 ft. (760 m.), the pressure might be so excessive that the cost of keeping working places open would be prohibitive. The actual caving of the surface in a deep mine, with a great thickness of capping, is slow and often takes years to accomplish. After sufficient width and depth have been undercut, the capping starts to break away, but, through arching, large masses of rock fill the opening, support the capping, and retard the continuation of caving. Caving to the surface is, therefore, retarded until either a sufficient thickness of the orebody is removed, or the width and length of the undercut part have been greatly increascd. I wish to emphasize this fact of slow caving, for it is on this principle that the success of the Athens system largely depends. (written discussion*).-The appearance of Mr. Brokaw?s with-the chemical composition of "paraffin dirt" will be welcomed by oil geologists who have worked in the Gulf Coast district. It is to be hoped that it will lead to a discussion of the subject which will throw some light on the relation this peculiar substance bears to the occurrence of oil deposits. The problem of locating oil pools in advance of drilling is at the best a very intangible matter in the district along the Gulf Coast, and it is therefore desirable to make the most of any clew which may be of the least assistance to this end. Geologists have been familiar with "paraffin dirt" for a number of years, and have informally discussed its value as a surface indication of oil. But doubtless owing largely to the fact that they have been unable to define its exact composition, very little information has appeared in print on the subject. The presence of this baffling and somewhat indeterminate substance is now quite generally accepted as one of the most reliable indications of a gas seepage. The question is whether paraffin dirt necessarily indicates that the escaping gas is an emanation from an oil deposit, or whether it merely indicates that marsh gas (urethane) has here escaped from its source in "the abundant decomposing vegetation entombed in the sediments of the old Mississippi Embayment, and the Gulf Coastal Plain. The presence of this material has been relied upon to a great extent, both by oil producers and geologists, in the location of wildcat wells, since the discovery that it was associated with gas seepages. It is quite true that other surface indications were often present at such localities, but if, in addition, paraffin dirt could be found in the vicinity, this fact was accepted as the final justification for drilling a test well, despite the fact that no one seemed to understand its chemical composition or to know why it should be associated with oil. In fact, for a long time it has generally been accepted that the name is a misnomer, that very little, if any, paraffin is present in it, or, for that matter, any other known fraction of crude oil.

The cost of maintaining the production of an operating oil company is one of the most important, as well as one of the most difficult to estimate, of the various items which go to make up the total cost of producing oil. In the opinion of many operators the cost of drilling and developing new wells, whose, production takes the place of the loss in production through decreased yield of the old wells, is considered an operating expense, for the reason that the total income-producing power of the property is not increased. The cost of these new wells may be added directly to production expense, or it may be charged to capital account, and this account depreciated to the same extent. In either case, after an oil company is on a satisfactory income-producing basis, the money for drilling new wells to maintain production must be taken from the income of the company. Three factors determine the cost of maintaining production: First, the rate of decline in yield of the wells; second, the cost of drilling and equipping new wells in terms of their production; third, the decrease in initial production of new wells as the property is drilled and gas pressure taken off the sands, etc. In order to check theoretical figures for the cost of maintaining production the writer, with the assistance of Reed Bush and Fred Tough, has compiled the following figures. It is necessary first of all to choose a' period of time during which production for the field or territory studied remains fairly constant. The longer the period of time over which this condition prevails, the better. It is also necessary to eliminate or allow for any extraneous condition which may have affected the production returns, such as the shutting down of a large number of wells, the bringing in of a well of exceptionally large yield, the opening up of virgin territory where the flush yield is greater than will be had from new wells in after years, etc. All these conditions are exemplified most simply in the case of the Coalinga field, and perhaps these figures are more truly prophetic than the two other cases given. Business managers and mining engineers are aware of the theorist's weapons, but the question of applying them to the mastery of practical problems seems hardly feasible, especially in view of the almost innumerable variables plaguing the everyday scene in the mining enterprise. One such sophisticated tool of long-standing in the theorist's arsenal is marginal analysis. Equally long-standing for the operating company and valuation engineer is the problem of defining the cut-off grade the point below which a mineral re- source ceases to be economically amenable to extraction. TULSA, the host of the Petroleum Division this year, is the oil metropolis of the Mid- Continent and gateway of the Southwest. It has risen in less than three decades from a dusty cattle town of less than 1000 population to its present-day status of a modern, wide-awake and prosperous city of close to 150,000, with an assessed realty valuation of approximately $100,000,000. Oil was discovered near Tulsa in 1901, and with it came th.2 development of the Mid-Continent field, one of the richest in the world. Tulsa from the start has been the center of operations, and its location on foul- and aggressive application of the airplane to oil-field requirements tends to fix this status as production is developed farther and farther afield. That Tulsa is far more than an ephemeral oil town is punched into the newcomer's- especially the Easterner's-mind, as he is whisked by taxi from the railroad station to the Hotel Mayo. The cicadalike pounding of the riveters on the steel skeletons of many skyscrapers, mounting upward to fill the gaps in an already well-developed skyline, dispels the feeling of a new atmosphere and puts him back on Forty-second Street, Michigan Boulevard or whatever his own particular "Main Street" may be along which an American city is being remade. June was the month in which AIME was founded in the year of 1871. For some reason, February was selected as the month for the legal Annual Meeting. One can't help thinking wistfully of Annual Meetings in June but of course this is not the reality. Because the Centennial Ceremonies are taking place in February, that month has been chosen as the one in which MINING ENGINEERING, the monthly magazine of the Society of Mining Engineers, a constituent society of AIME, is publishing its Commemorative is- sue to celebrate the event. SME and ME take a proprietary air about AIME. This is mostly because AIME started as the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Metallurgy was added to the name in 1919 and Petroleum in 1956. The official abbreviation of "AIME" has been retained, however.

The design of a centrifugal slurry pump is approached as a compromise between efficiency and wear life of the wetted parts. This compromise is effected by the choice of proper materials of construction and geometry. However even the most optimally designed pump will fail if due consideration is not given to its installation and operation. System head curves and hydraulic profiles are discussed as useful tools to be used in the operational analysis of a slurry system.
