The tensile behavior of magnesium single crystals at a temperature of 26º ± 2ºC was investigated at varying pressure levels from 760 to 8 X 10-8 tow. For crystals deformed at a constant linear strain rate of 0.061 min-1. there was no apparent effect of the vacuum environment down to 10-8 torr. However, from a vacuum of 10-5 torr down to the lowest pressure attained (8 x 10-8 tor,), the effect of the vacuum environment was to increase the strain at the end of the first linear (or easy-glide) stage and to decrease the slope of this stage; the magnitude of this effect was found to be dependent on pressure. The slope of the second linear stage was also decreased at the lower pressure levels; however, this effect appears to be caused primarity by the vacuum effect on the first linear stage. The magnitude of the vacuum-environmrnt effect was also found to be dependent upon strain rate. The reduction in flow stress at 5 x 10-8 torr, as compared to the stress in air, was obserced to be about 10 pct for a strain rate of 0.0250 min-' and 70 pct for a strain rate of 0.67 min-1. No systematic effect of pressure on the critical resolvled shear stress was observed. The data interpreted in terms of a modified form of Mott's work-hardening mechanism for hexagonal metals. It has long been known that surface conditions influence the mechanical behavior of materials. Roscoe 1 demonstrated the importance of surface conditions on mechanical behavior by testing cadmium crystals with oxide layers. He found that the "apparent" critical resolved shear stress for cadmium was increased approximately 2.5 times by the presence of an oxide layer 1000 atoms thick. The magnitude of this effect was dependent on film thickness with crystals having films less than 20 atoms thick still showing a definite increase. This observed strengthening could not be attributed to any strength of the oxide film because of 1) the thinness of the films and 2) an observed increase in the flow stress as deformation proceeded. Harper and cottrel12 obtained similar results on zinc crystals which had been etched and steamed to give artificially thick oxide films. However, in the course of this study, they also carefully examined the very early stages of plastic flow for zinc crystals which in one case had been electrolytically polished and in the other had been lightly etched to produce a thin film. They then found that the critical resolved shear stress for both surface treatments of the crystals was actually identical but that the etched crystal exhibited a much more rapid initial hardening rate. This had not been noted previously. This result indicated that, in fact, the film caused an increase in the stress for continuation of slip, rather than for the initiation of slip. Lipsett and King3 investigated the effect of evaporated gold films on the plastic behavior of cadmium single crystals. For large angles (=75 deg) between the specimen axis and the normal to the slip plane, they found that the stress-strain curve of the coated specimen always lies above that for a clean specimen. While the production of crude oil and condensate in South Arkansas increased only 1.7 per cent over the 1940 figure, complete utilization of gas produced with the oil and condensate, and heretofore wasted, was beginning to be evidenced. There were 26,229,264 bbl. of oil and condensate produced in South Arkansas during 1941, as against 25,790,380 bbl. for the year 1940. (Fig. I.) Since 1936, deep producing sands have been discovered in 18 fields and during that period only 40 per cent of the total state production has come from Upper Cretaceous formations while 60 per cent came from the Lower Cretaceous and Jurassic formations. The gas produced with crude oil and condensate from the latter formation contains large quantities of hydrogen sulphide, the maximum being 6900 grains per 100 cu. ft. in the Patton pool of Lafayette County. Gas Utilization During the latter part of 1940 and the early part of 1941, pilot plants were placed in operation to determine whether the hydrogen sulphide and deleterious material in South Arkansas gases could be removed economically. The Federal Government desired to build a large aluminum plant in the Ouachita Valley and was seeking cheap fuel for the generation of electricity. The fact that the gases were produced with appreciable quantities of crude oil and condensate made it available at a very low price, since the state's conservation law prohibits the flaring of any gas. As a result of these experiments the first large-scale unit for the processing of gases containing hydrogen sulphide was placed in operation on Sept. I, 1941. The plant is in the Magnolia oil field, Columbia County. It processes residue gas from the Shell Oil Company's gasoline plant in that field and also raw gas from the Village field, 6 miles east of the Magnolia field. The gas entering the desulphuri-zation unit is laden with approximately 1400 grains of hydrogen sulphide per 100 cu. ft. and is stripped to a content of 4 grains per 100 cu. ft. The capacity of the plant is 15 million cu. ft. of gas treated daily under a pressure of 160 lb. per sq. in. The cost of treatment, exclusive of depreciation, is appreciably less than I per 1000 cubic feet. Two other plants of much greater capacity have been announced and priorities have been granted, which should bring the total amount of gas treated to 150 million cu. ft. daily. The gas to be treated will have a maximum hydrogen sulphide content of 4500 grains per 100 cu. ft. and will be processed under a pressure of 600 lb. per sq. in. These developments are something entirely new in field practice for the industry. The fact that this heretofore wasted gas is available at very low cost has led to the location of some eight war industries within the state, in addition to the alu-minum plant. WHILE the yield stress of solution treated Fe-Cu alloys increases rapidly with aging, a precipitate has only been directly observed in overaged samples.'-" This precipitate is essentially pure fcc copper, the E phase. Hornbogen2 suggested that the initial hardening is due to clustering of copper atoms in a bcc iron matrix. Hornbogen was not able to obtain direct confirmation for such bcc clusters by either X-ray diffraction or electron microscopy; however, he did observe analogous clustering in Fe-Au alloys7 where the scattering factor difference between iron and gold is more favorable than that for iron and copper. Fujii, Nemoto, Suto, and Monma4 recently observed diffuse electron diffraction scattering in a 2.5 pct Cu alloy aged at 500°C: for 30 hr. They suggested that part of the diffuse SCattering was due to a modulated structure of 26 to 42 wavelength parallel to the (110) matrix plane. This disappeared with further aging. However, 30 hr at 500°C is well beyond the peak strengthening in this alloy which occurred at less than I hr at 500oc.4 By transmission electron microscopy they could not distinguish between quenched samples and samples aged to maximum strength. The purpose of the present investigation was to try to obtain further confirming evidence for a precipitation stage preceding the formation of the fcc E phase. Change in Young's modulus was selected for study be- EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The Fe-1.67 at. pct Cu alloy was supplied by the U.S. Steel Corporation in the form of a hot forged rectangular bar. The carbon and nitrogen contents of this alloy were 70 ppm and less than 10 ppm, respectively. The samples for Young's modulus measurements were made by cold swaging to & in. diam and cutting to 2 in. lengths. Tensile test samples 1 in. long were prepared by cold rolling to a thickness of 0.012 in. and then machining to gage dimensions of 0.5 by 0.012 in. For Mijssbauer studies, foils 1 mil thick were prepared by cold rolling. During fabrication the alloy was given intermediate anneals at 845OC followed by quenching. The specimens after preparation were solution treated at 1000°C (y field) or 845°C (a field) for 1 to 2 and 5 to 6 hr, respectively, in a dynamic vacuum of about 2 x lom6 torr. The tensile and modulus specimens were drop-quenched into iced brine through an aluminum foil which vacuum-sealed the bottom of the furnace tube. The MOssbauer foils were drop-quenched into helium gas cooled by passing through N2 (liq) in a copper coil. The grain diameter of the modulus and tensile specimens was between 0.025 and 0.035 mm. The samples were aged from 400" to 500°C in a dynamic vacuum of 2 x 10-6 torr and cooled by pulling into a water-cooled portion of the vacuum system. The dynamic Young's modulus was measured at room temperature using electrostatic excitation and detection of longitudinal vibrations.' Neglecting any length change during the aging, (this is expected to be comparatively small), the fractional change of Young's modulus (?Et)/Eav, is equal to twice the fractional change of the resonant frequency (?ft)/fav . ?ft =ft —fo where fo and ft are the resonant frequencies of a specimen before aging and after aging to time t. The measured f's, approximately 51,000 cps, were corrected to 25°C for any variation in the ambient temperature. The tensile tests reported were carried out at room temperature in an Instron with a 1000 lb full scale load cell. The flow stress reported herein corresponds to a strain of 0.002. Production of oil in Oklahoma during 1927 amounted to 273,256,900 bbl. (Table l), an increase of nearly 100,000,000 bbl. over the previous year. All of the major fields declined with the exception of those of the Seminole district which produced 136,105,000 bbl., almost one-half of the total production of the state. Because of this large new production, most of the development in the state during the year took place in that district. The Seminole City pool located in T.-9-N., R.-6-E., was the first of these pools to be developed. The Indian Territory Illuminating Oil Co. brought in the first well in this field in March, 1926, for 1100 bbl. This well is located in Sec. 24-T.-9-N., R-6-E., and produced from the Hunton lime reached at depth of 3900 ft. The first Wilcox production was developed by the Independent Oil & Gas Co. and R. S. Garland in Sec. 26, T.-9-N, R-6-E. This well was being drilled for production in the Hunton lime but was dry in this horizon and was deepened to the Wilcox sand in July, 1926, and at the total depth of 4069 ft. developed a maximum production of 8000 bbl. daily. It held up in wonderful manner and was the cause of not only the development of this pool but the prospecting of the whole district for the Wilcox sand. This led to the discovery of the other major pools in that district. Seminole City pool reached a peak production of 264,500 bbl. on February 22, 1927, and slowly declined so that by December it had a daily average of 56,200 bbl. from 321 wells. The second pool in this district to be discovered was the Searight pool which was discovered by F. J. Searight et al. in Sec. 33, T-10, R-6, in April, 1926. The first well was drilled to the Hunton lime encountered at 4115 ft., and came in for 1300 bbl. daily. During August, 1926, the second well was drilled on the same farm through the Hunton lime to the Wilcox sand which was encountered at 4360 ft. It came in for an initial production of 4000 bbl. daily. This started active drilling in this field for the Wilcox sand. The field had a peak production of 40,621 bbl. on June 15, 1927, and declined to a daily average of 22,300 bbl. from 73 wells during December.

IN reality, the Butte district is the birthplace of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., for it was here that strength was gathered and means provided for later expansions of the Company. The Butte district was organized at a miners' meeting on Aug. 20, 1866, primarily for gold placer-mining operations. Substantial amounts of placer gold were recovered from gulch gravels during the period 1862 to 1868. The earliest lode claim locations in the district were recorded in July and August 1864. IT IS usually assumed that chemical specifications are sufficient for steel to be used for case carburizing, and if the steel analyzes within the ordinary limits specified for steel for this purpose, no difficulty traceable to the steel used should be encountered in obtaining satisfactory results in the case carburizing and hardening. Much work has been done to determine the effect of various alloying elements on the rate of carbon penetration, etc. but, to our knowledge, little if anything has been published in regard to the effect of the quality of the steel on the final results in the hardening of case-carburized steel parts. The writers believe that the structure of the case both before and after quenching is greatly affected by the actual condition of the steel itself as made, and that for good results in the case-carburizing and hardening departments, the steel should be of the best possible quality as regards non-metallic impurities. It is the purpose of this paper to prove that the presence of excess dissolved oxides in the steel, as made in the melting furnace, affects permanently the results obtained in carburizing and hardening and that it is possible that the presence of dissolved oxide can result in total unfitness of low-carbon steel for, case hardening purposes. When races and rolls for roller bearings are made from a low-carbon steel, case carburized and hardened, it is of primary importance that the results of this treatment be of the highest quality. It is necessary, therefore, that in the case-carburizing work each detail be rigorously checked to avoid any defects which would cause the loss of much time and material. The case carburizing with which this paper deals was done in under-fired oil furnaces. The temperature of each furnace is controlled by means of a platinum platinum-rhodium thermocouple, in connection with a potentiometer indicator and potentiometer recorder. The temperature of each furnace is registered every 15 min. by an operator, who is continually checked by the automatic recorders.

The derivative of the surface tension with orientation, ??/??, for copper has been measured over the entire unit triangle. This derivative or torque term was determined from the variation of the dihedral angles at the intersection of twin boundaries and free surfaces. High-temperature anneals in graphite with a hydrogen atmosphere gave torque terms of 0.097 at (111), 0.066 at (100), and 0.0257 at (110). A variation from -36oto +23oC in the dew Point of the H2 had no effect on these values, nor did a change from 99.98 to 99.999 pct Pure copper. The removal of graphite from the system decreased ??/?? slightly. Considering the surface near a low-index plane to be smooth except for occasional steps, the free-energy increment per cm of step is calculated, and it is shown that the observed variation of ??/?? is consistent with a random distribution of steps and an interaction energy between steps. Integration of ??/?? gave the relative values of y at (100), (110), and (111) as comPared to ymax: (Y111/Ymax) =0.974, (Y110/Ymax) =0.996, (y100/Ymax) = 0.983. The ratio of the surface tension of coherent twin boundaries to the surface tension of the free surface was found to be (yT/ys) = 0.027 * 0.011. In a crystalline solid the surface tension y (surface free energy per unit area) depends on the orientation of the surface relative to the crystallographic axes of the crystal. Measurements of this variation of y with surface orientation have been reported for metals only within the last few years. Consider the grain boundary groove shown in Fig. 1. Here the three surfaces are all normal to the plane of the paper, and each has a different surface tension, y1, y2, and y3. If the system is at equilibrium, the total surface free energy must remain unchanged for a slight vertical displacement of the intersection (points A, B, and C are kept fixed). KAISER Bauxite Co., a subsidiary of Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp., has been mining and shipping Jamaican bauxite for over a year. On Feb. 10, 1953 the first boat load of bauxite left Port Kaiser, Jamaica, for the company's alumina plant at Baton Rouge, La. To provide its own source of the aluminum ore, a Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp. exploration party started initial reconnaissance in 1947. This work, and subsequent exploration, led to the acquisition of reserves sufficient to warrant a full-scale mining operation for several decades.

FORM of ore bodies, strength of wall rock, and quantity of water that must be handled differ so greatly in the various districts in which the Corporation operates that a variety of mining methods have to be employed. All are underground, however, with the exception of glory holes at Cerro de Pasco from which siliceous silver pacos ore is obtained. In general, the ors is in many relatively small bodies unsuitable for hulk mining, such as caving or top slicing. The strength of the rock and ore rarely permit open stopes, though shrinkage is successfully used on various veins with strong walls, particularly in, Casapalca. Horizontal cut and-fill and square-set stoping with careful filling are the principal methods employed, with the necessarily higher cost for supplies and labor offset as much as possible by care in the avoidance of dilution. The mines at both Morococha and Casapalca are notoriously wet, and even at Cerro de Pasco the quantity of water was enough to retard deep development until the perfection of electric pumps. In Morococha particularly, the extension of successive levels, first from adits of moderate length, then from shafts and heavy pumping installations on the 750 and 1000 levels, and finally by the 30,564-ft. Kingsmill tunnel, was one of the most difficult and long continued fights against water and resulting heavy ground that is recorded in mining history.

COMMERCIAL strip mining of coal was first begun in the state of Illinois in 1911.1 The annual tonnage of coal produced from coal strip mines in the state was very small until 1924, when the strip mines shipped 1.68 pet of the total state shipping mine tonnage. Since then, strip mines have gradually come into their own by producing a sizable percentage of the coal produced in the state. Table 1 shows the coal tonnage shipped from both underground and strip coal mines in the state of Illinois for selected years. The table illustrates the major role that strip mines play in the state's coal industry. Today, strip mining is generally conducted in areas where the coal seams lie so close to the surface of earth that a stripping method of mining the coal seam is cheaper than an underground method. Strip mining not only recovers 100 pct of the coal deposit, but may also be used as a method of mining large acreages of coal abandoned by the closing of underground mines.

It is shown that one cannot approximate the broad internal friction Peaks observed in the Fe-Mn-N system as the sum of a number of subsidiary Peaks and still vetain the concept of a single relaxation time. Furthermore, the approximation of manganese affectirg only nearest neighbor interstitial sites is shown to be incompatible with the experimental results. The results of this experiment show that the influence of manganese in the ferrite lattice extends over 3 to 4 atomic distances. NUMEROUS experiments have shown that the presence of relatively small amounts of substitutional alloying elements can profoundly affect the profile of the damping spectrum in the vicinity of the Snoek peak in bee metals.1-7 Dijkstra and Sladekl observed this phenomenon in Fe-Mn-N alloys where it appeared as a broadening and shifting of the Snoek peak to higher temperatures. The authors interpreted this as being the result of a superposition of two damping maxima—the normal Snoek peak, located at its usual position and having a normal half-width, and an interaction peak having a normal half-width, but occurring at a somewhat higher temperature. They prclposed that the interaction peak was caused by nitrogen atoms jumping from Fe-Mn sites to Fe-Fe sites, the Fe-Mn interstitial sites having one manganese and one iron atom as nearest neighbors, and the Fe-Fe sites having two iron atoms as nearest neighbors. They further suggested that the Fe-Mn sites had a lower energy than the normal Fe-Fe sites because of the presence of the adjacent manganese atoms. The behavior of molybdenum and its surface oxides in oxidizing and reducing gas atmospheres and in high vacua at elevated temperatures is a question of scientific and technical importance. The use of molybdenum as a metal or as an important component in alloys in oxidizing atmospheres at elevated temperatures has been limited because of the unprotec-tive nature of its oxide film and the volatility of this oxide at moderate temperatures. This communication will present results of a vacuum microbalance studyl, 2 of the following problems: (I) the oxidation kinetics in the temperature range of 250°to 450°C; (2) the reduction with pure hydrogen of thin oxide films formed on molybdenum; (3) the volatility of the thin oxide films; and (4) the vacuum oxidation of molybdenum at high temperatures. Molybdenum is an interesting metal to study for the following reasons: (I) although the oxide-to-metal-volume ratio is greater than one, the metal is not considered protective; (2) the metal oxidizes readily at temperatures of 2 50°C and higher; (3) the oxides of the metal are reduced at temperatures as low as 500°C by pure hydrogen; (4) the oxide Moo3 melts at 795°C; and (5) the oxides of molybdenum are volatile at moderate temperatures. The following variables are studied in the oxidation kinetics: time, temperature, pressure, surface preparation, surface area, concentration of inert gas in the lattice, cycling procedures in temperature, vacuum effect and high temperature vacuum oxidation. The general interpretation of many of these factors has been previously discussed. Literature The oxidation of molybdenum has not been studied critically. Although many studies have probably been made on the kinetics of the oxidation process, none has been reported in the literature available to us. The crystal structures found in the oxidation of molybdenum have been studied by Hickman and Gulbransen." Their results showed that Moo2 is the oxide which is stable in contact with the metallic substrate throughout the temperature range 300 to 700°C. As the film thickens in the low temperature range, MoO3 becomes predominant on the surface. Above 400°C, Moos is no longer observed, MoO2 being the only oxide found. Hagg and Magneli6 have shown from an X ray study that the a-phase, orthor-hombic Moo3 is stable up to 1050°C. Two other phases, ß and ß with compositions close to MoO2.90 are also obtained. The formula for the 0 phase is not given but that of the ß phase is defined as Mo9O26 The 0' phase is found to be built upon a monoclinic unit cell. GENERAL In mid-1974, a representative of ARCO Petroleum Company walked into our Austin offices and asked for a permit for ARCO's first Clay West Mine site. This was the first in situ uranium mining permit issued in the United States. That initial permit, issued in January 1975, was for three acres. The four years since have been characterized by growth and change. Today there are 16 permits approved for approximately 1,540 production acres issued to five companies at eight sites in four counties. There are approximately seven additional permit applications being processed or on the verge of being submitted for an estimated 2,000 additional acres of production. As a rough gauge of the financial scope of this activity, at the typical 40 production wells per acre and an estimated $2,000/well, operators hale installed or committed $122 million for production wells. This does not account for the exploration and development wells installed to delineate the ore or the cost of processing facilities for extracting the uranium. HISTORY OF URANIUM MINING IN TEXAS Information I have concerning early in situ uranium mining activities is "sketchy" but the apparent first on-site test of in situ uranium mining was conducted between 1967 and 1971 at the Dueterstat site, north of Yorktown in Gonzales County, by City Service. Others ran tests at the Bruni site in Webb County and the Burns and Clay West sites in Live Oak County in the mid-70's. During this period, Texas Water Quality Board personnel in the central and district offices maintained a general surveillance of these various test activities. Regulation of in situ uranium mining was formalized with the issuance of a permit in January 1975 with the advent of ARCO's initial production scale (3 acre) effort in the Clay West area at the Moser mine site. Since 1975, the accelerating rate of mining and exploration activity is noticeable. There were 16 exploratory rigs operating early in 1977. This year, the rig count is averaging 46--a 287% increase. HISTORY OF LEGISLATION Paralleling this mining activity was state and federal legislation which subjected in situ mining to environmental regulation. The following is a brief chronology of the legislation that is directly or indirectly related to uranium mining. As most of you know, disposal wells are an integral part of most in situ uranium mines operating in Texas. They are used both during production and during aquifer restoration following production. The wells are regulated by the Texas Injection Well Act, enacted in 1961 by the Texas Legislature. In 1967, the Water Quality Act established the Texas Water Quality Board, and provided for the regulation of water quality by the so-called permit system. In 1969, the Solid Waste Act was enacted by the Texas Legislature. The legislation provides for control of wastes from manufacturing, mining, and agriculture. This Act regulated uranium surface mining activities until 1975 when the Texas Surface and Mining Reclamation Act placed responsibility with the Railroad Commission for uranium open-pit mining and surface mining of coal and lignite. In 1972, the Federal Water Pollution Control Act (Public Law 92-500) was passed. This legislation forms the legal base for the NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) and the subsequent point source effluent guidelines and standards. The November 6, 1975 issue of the Federal Register published interim final rules for Best Practical Treatment levels for effluent discharges from ore mining and dressing operations. Litigation was immediately initiated by eleven companies against these proposed rules, and they are currently being reconsidered for reissuance in 1979. In 1974, the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act (Public Law 93-523) was enacted. A part of this legislation is the Underground Injection Congrol Program. The regulations implementing this program have undergone various public hearings and it is expected that they will be published in the Federal Register before the end of 1978. In 1975, the Texas Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (Senate Bill 55), providing for the Railroad Commission's authority to require reclamation of surface mines, was passed. It is usually assumed that chemical specifications are sufficient for steel to be used for case carburizing, and if the steel analyzes within the ordinary limits specified for steel for this purpose, no difficulty traceable to the steel used should be encountered in obtaining satisfactory results in the case carburizing and hardening. Much work has been done to determine the effect of various alloying elements on the rate of carbon penetration, etc. but, to our knowledge, little if anything has been published in regard to the effeet of the quality of the steel on the final results in the hardening of case-carburized steel parts. The writers believe that the structure of the case both before and after quenching is greatly affected by the actual condition of the steel itself as made, and that for good results in the case-carburizing and hardening departments, the steel should be of the best possible quality as regards non-metallic impurities. It is the purpose of this paper to prove that the presence of excess dissolved oxides in the steel, as made in the melting furnace, affects permanently the results obtained in carburizing and hardening and that it is possible that the presence of dissolved oxide call result in total unfit-ness of low-carbon steel for case hardening purposes. When races and rolls for roller bearings are made from a low-carbon steel, case carburized and hardened, it is of primary importance that the results of this treatment be of the highest quality. It is necessary, therefore, that in the case-carburizing work each detail be rigorously checked to avoid any defects which would cause the loss of much time and material. The case carburizing with which this paper deals was done in under-fired oil furnaces. The temperature of each furnace is controlled by means of a platinum platinum-rhodium thermocouple, in connection with a potentiometer indicator and potentiometer recorder. The temperature of each furnace is registered every 15 min. by an operator, who is continually checked by the automatic recorders.

Metallic copper of purity equal to commercial electrolytic copper is deposited during the anodic dissolution of technically available white metal, Cu2S, in m acidic solution of' copper(II) sulfate as electrolyte and copper sheets as cathodes. The process may be applied on commercial scale since it has the advantage of by passing the converting and poling steps, decreasing pollution problems due to SO, and recovering the sulfur of the white metal in the elemental form. The anodic dissolution is believed to take place in three steps: The working conditions that lead to 98 pct cathodic current efficiency are: 30 gpl Cu2+ and 100 gpl H2SO4 in electrolyte, current density 1.0 amp per sq dm, and tetnperature of bath 40°C'. DURING the smelting of copper, nickel, lead, and zinc sulfide ores, large amounts of sulfur dioxide are produced. Because the release of this gas in the atmosphere causes pollution problems, many attempts were made in the past for its recovery either in liquified form or processed to sulfuric acid. Although these two forms of sulfur are the usual forms that are consumed by the chemical and metallurgical industries, their storage and transport usually raise economic problems. It was realized, long ago, that a process by which sulfur can be recovered directly in the elemental form would be most attractive. Elemental sulfur is easily stored and transported, and is readily converted to SO2, H2S, or H2SO4 when needed. Processes aimed to recover the metals from their sulfide ores, and at the same time by-product sulfur in the elemental form, were recently reviewed.' As early as 1882, Marchese2 patented a process in which a matte having the composition: Cu 15, Pb 14, Fe 41, and S 25 pct was electrolyzed. According to cohen3 the process was applied on a pilot scale by the Aktiengesellschaft fur Bergbau-, Blei-, und Zinkhiitten-betriebe at Stolberg, Rheinland, Germany. The process was unsuccessful, however, owing to the contamination of the electrolyte during electrolysis. Studies in this field were reported by Bernfeld4 and Egli.5 Borchers et a1.6-8 developed the process further by using white metal (Cu 78.2 pct, S 19.6 pct) instead of the matte, and a pilot plant was operated by the Mansfeldschen Kupferschiefer Co. at Eisleben, German~.~ It appears, however, that the process never went into commercial operation. Further studies in this direction were carried out by Russian workers.10-23 The International Nickel Co. of Canada erected a pilot plant at Port Colborne in 1951 to apply the process to nickel matte which is essentially pure nickel sulfide."'- 26 Full-scale plant went into operation at the Thompson Refinery in Manitoba in 1964.27 In this method nickel sulfide matte is melted and cast into anodes analyzing 76 pct Ni and 20 pct S with small amounts of copper, cobalt, and iron. These anodes are then electrolyzed in an aqueous solution of NiS04 at pH 4. Further work on this method was reported in the literature.28-31 In this paper, experiments on the anodic dissolution of white metal in aqueous copper sulfate solution are reported. EXPERIMENTAL White metal, Table I, obtained from The Anaconda Co., was cast in form of anodes 10 by 7.5 by 1 cm, Fig. 1. The anodes are mechanically strong and do not break easily; when polished they gave a shiny gray metallic appearance. From the chemical composition shown in Table I, it can be seen that the atomic ratio Cu:S corresponds approximately to the formula CU2.06S. The copper in excess to the formula Cu2S is most probably present as a separate phase since metallic copper could be seen under the microscope, Fig. 2. Fig. 3 shows the X-ray diffraction pattern of white metal which matches fairly well with that of reagent-grade Cu2S.

An inventory of the mineral resources of a region is a most desirable basis for planning their systematic development. In the absence of appropriate samples upon which to base a reliable estimate of this inventory, investigators have resorted to a number of indirect approaches; the unit regional value concept forms the basis for one such approach. The produced resources of a region are a function of the inventory multiplied by the degree of intensity (some fraction between zero and one) of development of the resources. A convenient means of expressing this amount is to accumulate the weight and value of resource and to prorate the totals over the area represented by the unit sampled; i.e., weight and value per unit area or tonnes/km.2 and U.S. 1967 $/km.2. When this approach is used for the U.S.A., South Africa and Rhodesia the average value of (log.) U.S. 67$/km.2 for the states of the U.S.A. and South Africa are similar ($55,176 U.S.$67/km.2 and $52,538/km.2 respectively); whereas, Rhodesia is relatively underdeveloped (10,301 U.S.67$/km.2). On the other hand if the individual commodities are used as a basis for comparison, the U.S.A. shows the greatest diversity (67 commodities out of a possible total of 75) with South Africa next (50 commodities) and Rhodesia last with only 26 commodities. Since it is known that area and value are not simply related perhaps diversity is directly related to area. Again the kinds of commodities which have contributed the greatest value to the totals differs, with fuels (petroleum, coal and natural gas) predominating in the U.S.A. totals; whereas, South Africa and Rhodesia obtain their greatest contributions from gold, diamonds (S. Africa) coal and asbestos. In each case the greatest value of resources is produced from sedimentary rocks. As a somewhat different kind of example, consider a single resource (petroleum, the most valuable in the U.S.A.) over a large area (number of sampling units) the U.S.A. by state. Furthermore, assume that the model frequency distribution of the amount of petroleum (tonnes/km.2) is log normal. Then the present production fails to match the model first because 17 states (34% out of 50) have not produced petroleum. Of the remaining 33 states, Louisiana has produced the most (15,177 tonnes/km.2) and the frequency histogram is still skew. A spatial analysis of the distribution of the amount of petroleum by state shows that the samples (i.e., states) are not random; the non-producers and producers tend to cluster. It remains to be seen if this is indeed a true representation of the incidence of petroleum or is a function of the exploration philosophy currently in vogue.

In the pellet-producing industry it is sometimes claimed that "The pellets are made in the concentrator," or that "The key to good pellets is in the balling operation." However, one claim is generally agreed on: If you can put in, on, and through the indurating furnace a good green ball of Proper size and adequate strength to withstand the handling, load, dehydration, and thermal shock until it is properly heat-hardened, you will have the pellet product you desire-that is, a "competent" green ball. The strength requirements that enable a competent green ball to withstand the environment of the indurating furnace are usually less restrictive than those for transporting the green ball from its source of production to the furnace. Experience has shown that different types of material may have different balling characteristics which may impose limitations on the quality of the green ball that can easily be produced under normal conditions. Therefore, if a specific material will produce a green ball that meets the physical requirements for competency in the furnace, but not for handling or transportation, various practices must be instituted to overcome this deficiency. In other words, if a normal handling system is too rigorous for the green balls that can be produced under standard conditions, then "handling with care" should be tried.
