The exact date of man's first use of coal is lost in antiquity. The discovery that certain black rock would burn was undoubtedly accidental and probably occurred independently and many times in the world over thousands of years. It is quite likely that these independent discoveries were made when primitive man chanced to build camp fires on exposed ledges of a black stone, then was amazed when it caught fire. The Chinese recorded the use of coal 1100 years before the Christian Era. And, from the Bible we learn that King Solomon was familiar with coal in what is now Syria. In Wales, there is evidence that the Bronze Age people used coal for funeral pyres, and it is known that the Romans used this fuel. There are other ancient references. So the knowledge that coal would burn, and even some uses of that knowledge, goes back for thousands of years. However, practical and consistent use of coal seems to date to England in the Middle Ages. COAL IN AMERICA In the Americas, there is evidence here and there of a slight use by the Indians. However, the first recorded discovery of coal, in what is now the U.S., was by French explorers, who reported a "cole mine" on the Illinois River in 1679. Following this, other discoveries were made by French and British explorers, but the first recorded actual usage was in Virginia in 1702, where a French settler was granted permission to use coal for his forge. Earliest recorded commercial mining was in 1750, from the James River coalfield near Richmond, Va., a deposit now abandoned. Besides local consumption from this field, shipments were made to Philadelphia, New Pork, and Boston. During the Revolution this coal was of importance in the manufacture of shot and shell; so important, in fact, that the British sent an expedition in 1781 to destroy the iron works and

CERTAIN physical and chemical properties of copper are so intimately related that a change in variation of the physical properties indicates a certain chemical change. The standard specifications of copper of the American Society for Testing Materials are based upon physical characteristics with one exception, namely, the copper contents. The physical standard includes electrical properties, defects in the "set or casting," variation in dimensions, weight, etc. Paragraph 4 of the specifications states, " Wire bars, cakes, slabs and billets shall be substantially free from ;shrink holes, cold sets, pits, sloppy edges, concave tops, and similar defects in set or casting." Shrink holes and concave tops indicate both physical and metallurgical defects; cold sets, sloppy edges, etc., indicate physical defects only; small pit holes may be indicative of either or both physical and metallurgical defects, depending on conditions under which they originated. To the refiner, a copper casting, no matter how made, is known as a "shape," irrespective of whether it is wire bar, ingot, cake, slab, billet, etc. As practically all shapes are cast in an open mold, that is a mold without cope, the surface of the shape cools in contact with the atmosphere and has a coating of oxide. Certain phenomena of the surface indicate the adaptability of the metal for forging or rolling. The writer believes that it is much simpler to produce shapes that are metallurgically correct than those that are mechanically satisfactory. When copper is to be rolled into thin sheets or drawn into very fine wire, the slightest physical defect becomes evident. It is, therefore, of the utmost importance to, consider every characteristic of the shape and ascertain the physical and chemical relationship. The following descriptions and explanations apply specifically to the use of the Hotchkiss Superdip, but there are no apparent reasons why they should not apply to any magnetometer. This paper is a product of work in the practical field for several years with the Hotchkiss magnetometer, mostly on mineral deposits in the southeastern United States. The paper describes the result of an attempt to develop a practical and economical field method that approaches, as nearly as possible, the utmost accuracy of which the magnetometer is capable. As there are many published descriptions of various magnetometers and magnetic methods, it would be superfluous to describe such instruments here, but a limited bibliography on the Hotchkiss and Askania magnetometers is appended. The Hotchkiss and the vertical Askania magnetometers have, respectively, maximum sensitivities of approximately 5 and 30 gamma per instrument scale division. Purpose of New Method The purpose of the method described in the following paragraphs is to eliminate, as far as possible, all corrections of field data that cause complexities and inaccuracies in the results of magnetometer surveys. Magnetometer field observations must be corrected for periodic variations in the intensity of the earth's magnetic field, as well as for temperature variations, both of which take place during the course of a day. These variations do not seriously handicap magnetometer work on highly magnetic deposits, but it is impossible to obtain accurate results, by the conventional methods in use today, over weakly magnetic or diamagnetic deposits. This is due to the physical inability to obtain by such methods sufficiently accurate data in the field to make dependable corrections. The magnitude of the necessary corrections of field observations frequently exceeds the magnitude of local magnetic anomalies obtained over various types of mineral deposits. Therefore if these corrections are neglected or made on the basis of inaccurate data, the entire magnetic picture of the area concerned is at least distorted, and perhaps destroyed altogethcr.

Bitumen is a general term for a group of materials composed of mixtures of hydrocarbons that are fusible and soluble in carbon disulfide. Included in the group are petroleum, asphalts, asphaltites, and mineral waxes. Asphalt is a dark-colored, cementitious solid or semisolid, which generally softens on heating and resumes a more viscous or solid state when cooled (personal communication). It is found in native form in fissures and pore spaces in rocks and as lakes. It is also obtained from the residues produced in petroleum refining. Asphaltites are black, naturally occurring solid bitumens. They are generally shiny and break with a conchoidal fracture. Common asphaltites are gilsonite (uintahite), grahamite, and glance pitch. Mineral waxes are solid or semisolid, relatively nonvolatile bitumens of various colors, having an unctuous feel and waxy luster. Of the native waxes, ozokerite is the best known. Montan wax is also classed as a natural wax, although it never occurs in the pure state and must be extracted from lignite or cannel coal (Ladoo, 1920). Mineral waxes may also be obtained by pyroprocessing of petroleum, lignite, and peat. Pyrobitumens are dark-colored, solid hydro- carbons that are infusible and relatively insoluble in carbon disulfide. They are so-called because they will yield liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons only when heated. Asphaltic pyrobitumens are defined as "substantially free of oxygenated bodies" and include wurtzilite (elaterite), albertite, and impsonite (Thrush, 1968). Nonasphaltic pyrobitumens contain oxygenated bodies; examples are coal and peat. The nonasphaltic type will not be discussed further. Petroleum Asphalts Asphalts refined from crude petroleum have almost completely replaced the native types. Refineries can produce asphalts in every desirable grade more economically and in greater quantity than the native types and with a variety of properties that meet the requirements of the various manufacturers using them. For all practical purposes, it is estimated that more than 95% of the asphalts consumed in the United States are refined from crude petroleum (private communication).

(New York Meeting, October, 1913.) THE problem of increasing blast-furnace efficiency through diminution of flue-dust production while operating with burdens consisting largely of fine ores has of recent years attracted the attention of metallurgists, whether directly or indirectly interested in the economies of iron smelting, and the various methods evolved from theory or practice have been. submitted to wide discussion. After the very thorough and, at that time, exhaustive view of the whole subject, which was afforded to the industry by the meeting of this Institute in February, 1912, the subject was again taken up at the meeting of the Verein deutscher Eisenhüttenleute at Düsseldorf in December, 1912. While American and German conditions are not entirely identical, it may be of interest to give here the words of the gentleman summing up the discussion at the Düsseldorf meeting : ?The chief advantage offered by the use of briquettes lies in the fact that disturbances in the furnace, caused mostly by the presence of fine ores in the burden, are avoided, and that blast pressure can be considerably reduced. The resulting economies cannot be overrated, as, with lower blast consumption per ton of product, the installation will be able to take care of increased production. In consequence of lower pressure and speed of blast, heat is more efficiently utilized,, flue gas temperature is lowered, and coke particles are less liable to be carried along with the flue dust, of which considerably less is produced. Finally, by increased regularity of operation and higher temperature in the lower parts of the furnace, the quality of the product is improved. The question of briquetting iron ores has grown to be one of the most important in the iron industry, and it is not any more a question of what is the cost 'of briquetting a ton of ore, but what, in. using ore briquettes, is the cost, of: production of a ton of iron."

THE necessity of accurate temperature measurements in the glass-making industries is today being much more widely appreciated than in the past. The introduction of the modern simplified and perfected pyrometric methods in connection with exact regulation of furnace temperatures has caused a marked improvement in the glass product with a quickened rate of production. An example of the processes in which much improvement has been and still can be made is that of annealing or heat-treating the glass. This is one of the most delicate processes in glass manufacture and one that requires a most careful furnace control. The heat treatment is undertaken to decrease the possibility of breakage and, in glass for fine optical instruments, to prevent serious warping of accurately ground and polished surfaces and to make the glass more uniform throughout to the passage of light waves. These objects are accomplished by removing all the harmful stresses that exist in a piece of glass when it has been cooled too quickly or unevenly. Such stresses exist, for example, after it has been pressed, cast, or otherwise worked. Thus the process of annealing consists of heating the glass evenly to the temperature at which it softens just enough to relieve these stresses in a reasonable time and then cooling slowly and uniformly until the glass hardens again. Accordingly, the things that must be investigated and determined in order to anneal glass without loss of time are, the annealing temperature, the time that the glass should be held at this temperature while the stresses relax, and the quickest cooling procedure that will give satisfactory results. After these characteristics of the glass are known the problem is one of pyrometry and temperature control entirely. In cases when it is known that a glass article will be required to withstand some definite type of heat or mechanical shock it is often possible, by a proper heat treatment, to produce such a distribution of the stresses in the glass that it will be enabled to resist these shocks more effectively.

Island Creek conditions are generally referred to as ideal; yet, as at all other properties, there are all known hazards of coal mining. The hardest of these hazards to combat is the human element. The basic thought in the minds of the management of these properties is to produce coal with the utmost safety, and it has impressed upon its supervisory force that it does not want a ton of coal unless it can be produced safely. This company has instituted a mine inspection department, which reports direct to the general manager, arid all matters pertaining to safety come under the direction of this department. Through the medium of the inspection department, the management is kept in touch with the actual conditions existing in general at all mines. Inspections are made regularly arid continuously; that is, at all times while the mine!: are in operation some sections of some mines are being examined. These inspections cover all active and inactive workings. Miners are contacted in their working places and other employees at their respective, work. A thorough check is made to see that the state mining laws are complied with and that company safety rules arc being observed. Night shifts receive the same attention as day shifts. All violations and dangerous practices are brought to the attention of the plant supervisory force with suggestions and recommendations; major hazards of emergency nature are taken up immediately with the management. Periodical inspections are also made of all tipples, preparation plants, dumping and hoisting equipment, to see that all machinery is properly guarded, and walkways and platforms properly fenced; conditions of equipmcnt and mechanical defects are also reported. Reports of inspection are written in letter form and in such a manner as to give the management a picture of the existing conditions at the time of inspection. Copies of inspection reports are forwarded to the superintendents with the general manager'? comments. During the war, the Navy undertook the construction, under my direction, of an experimental gun embodying features designed to lessen the cost and time of production. These experiments were initiated after representations as to their desirability had been offered by myself, by the Naval Consulting Board, and by the National Research Council. The first drawings were made in June, 1917, and the experiment was completed in November, 1918. For the sake of clearness it will pay to recapitulate briefly the fundamental idea of gun construction. It is well known that if a hollow cylinder is subjected to internal fluid pressure, the maximum stress occurs in the inside layers, the outer parts carrying much less than their due share of the stress. This inequality of stress is more pronounced the thicker the walls of the cylinder. If such a cylinder is pushed to the elastic limit, failure in elasticity will take place long before the outer lagers have reached the limit of their capacity. Economical use of the material would demand, however, that all parts of the cylinder reach the limits of their capacity simultaneously. This may be brought about, at least in cylinders of not too great thickness, by producing in the inner layers an initial compression, and in the outer layers an initial tension. The effect of internal pressure is at first to relieve the compression of the inside layers, while increasing the tension of the outside layers. If the initial stresses are properly distributed, all parts of the cylinder will reach their elastic limits simultaneously, thus giving a cylinder of maximum strength for its weight. In gun construction as hitherto practiced, this initial distribution of stress is produced either by winding the inner tube with wire, a common English practice, or by shrinking hoops over the inner tube, which has been the standard American practice. Previous workers have developed differential equations to describe oil displacement by water imbibition, but have not explicitly defined the relationship between recovery behavior for a single reservoir matrix block and its size. In the present work, imbibition theory is extended to show that the time required to recover a given fraction of the oil from a matrix block is proportional to the square of the distance between fractures. Using this relationship, recovery behavior for a large reservoir matrix block is predicted from an imbibition test on a small reservoir core sample. The prediction is then extended to analyze recovery behavior for fractured- matrix, water- drive reservoirs in which imbibition is the dominant oil-producing mechanism. Experimental data are presented to support the basic imbibition theory relating matrix block size, fluid viscosity level and permeability to recovery behavior. INTRODUCTION Imbibition has long been recognized as an important factor in recovering oil from water-wet, fractured-matrix reservoirs subjected to water flood or water drive. l-3 Recently, two approaches have been published which might be used to predict imbibition oil-recovery behavior for reservoir-sized matrix blocks. Graham and Richardson4 used a synthetic model to scale a single element of a fractured-matrix reservoir. lair,' on the other hand, used numerical techniques to solve the differential equations describing imbibition in linear and radial systems. This latter method requires auxiliary experimental data in the form of capillary pressure and relative permeability functions. These two approaches, i.e., synthetic models and numerical techniques, have been used to study a variety of reservoir fluid-flow problems. One pur- pose of this work is to present, with experimental verification, a third method for predicting imbibition oil recovery for large reservoir matrix blocks. This method uses scaled imbibition tests on small reservoir core samples to predict field performance. The imbibition tests are easier to perform than the capillary pressure and relative permeability tests required to apply the numerical method. Furthermore, when suitably preserved reservoir-rock samples are used, the properties of the laboratory system are the same as those of the field. This offers an important advantage over the use of synthetic models because there is usually some question as to how accurately reservoir-rock properties can be duplicated in such models. Based on the recovery behavior for a unit matrix block, an analysis is presented to predict oil recovery for a fractured, water-drive reservoir made up of many such unit blocks. In the analysis, it is assumed that the flow resistance and the volume of the reservoir fracture system are negligible compared with that of the porous matrix. These assumptions are generally consistent with observed characteristics of many fractured-matrix reservoirs, and have been employed in previous studies.2,3,6-8 further assumed that the effect of gravity on flow in the matrix blocks is negligible. On first thought, the latter assumption might appear to seriously limit application of the method. However, in a fractured reservoir, the effect of gravity on flow in a matrix block will be restricted by the height of the block. Furthermore, matrix permeabilities are often very low (10 md or less) in such reservoirs. This means that capillary or imbibition forces will be large, thus tending to minimize the relative importance of gravity. For these reasons, imbibition should be the dominant oil-recovery mechanism in many fractured-matrix, water-drive reservoirs. The predictive method presented in this report is applicable to such reservoirs. SCALING IMBIBITION THEORY The "scaling laws" applicable to the operation.

The successful application of ther mo compression lead bonding to semicondtctor or thin-film electronic devices depends on the establishment of the associated parameters. The quality of a thermocompression bond is primarily related to the process temperature and bonding force. A technique using the coelyicient of friction is presented that both reduces the time necessary for determining optimum parameter values and increases the accuracy of the results. Modern theories of the friction process are used to develop mathernatical expressions for shear and tensile bond strengths in terms of friction measurements. A further application of the pararneter-deterlnination technique concerns the measurement of surface contamination that may affect thermocompression bonding. In spite of the extensive use of thermocompression bonding, adequate methods for determining the bonding parameters have not been utilized. The quality of the weld depends on the temperature, force, and time used. There is a definite value or range of values for each parameter which assures an optimum weld. The process now generally used to obtain these values is to make several weld samples at each parametric setting, determine the mean pull strength, and relate the maximum consistent strength to optimum weld conditions. This could involve a very large number of test samples if a thorough search of each parameter were made. Experience and prior knowledge can reduce this number somewhat by limiting the investigation to a range known to contain the correct value, but the time and effort involved are still objectionable. The problems associated with thermocompression bonding of interconnecting leads to semiconductor or thin-film devices can be alleviated by the application of a new technique for establishing the process parameters. Obtaining the correct temperature, force, and duration to assure an optimum bond is accomplished by a simple measurement of the coefficient of friction. This approach increases the accuracy of parameter determination and greatly reduces the time necessary to complete the process. The approach made can be better understood by analyzing the principles of adhesion and friction on which thermocompression bonding depends. When two flat polished surfaces are placed together, the area of actual contact is much less than the apparent area determined by the over-all dimensions of the surface. This is because the microscopic surface is covered with projections which prevent uniform contact. Careful measurements of the electrical resistance across the contacting surfaces indicate the actual area may only be 1100,000 of the apparent area.' Because the actual contact area is small, extremely high pressure results from moderate force. This will produce deformation and plastic flow at contact points of the microscopic projections. The process will terminate in the creation of a large number of minute welds formed at extreme pressure and cold-worked to strong, hard bonds. Load removal will generally result in fracture of most of these microbonds because of the residual elastic stresses, unless the materials are soft. Under ordinary conditions, economic law will take care of the conservation of tin. Under present conditions it seems desirable that economic law should still be permitted to operate as far as is practicable. It is true that this law operates rather slowly, and that under war conditions it cannot be depended upon to give our Government the supply it immediately needs. There should, therefore, be a designation of the essential industries by the Government, and tin should be supplied for those needs, letting the non-essential industries take what is left. At the same time, information ought to be forthcoming as to how tin can be conserved; with tin selling at 80 c. per pound, more or less, it is to the interest of every consumer to get the best information he can as to how he can save tin. Economic law would properly punish those who do not study their own interests in this way. I deprecate, therefore, any centralized socialistic effort toward avoiding penalties through failure to observe and obey economic law. In saying this, however, I am not unmindful that it is desirable for our Government to take such control of the tin situation as may be necessary to the prosecution of the war, practically regardless of the effect of such action upon individual industry, which should studiously seek to adjust itself to the new condition. The Government should promulgate such technical information as it can collect, showing how tin can be conserved, and should urge upon every consumer the exercise of his common sense in self-protection. There is very little danger of any one attempting to hoard or corner tin, in the present state of the market. Most consumers will be glad to live from hand to mouth, covering their sales by purchases, or vice versa. As to the technical aspects: Tin and tin alloys are used to give certain practical and also certain artistic results. The practical factors are those involved in proper adhesion, continuity of surface, protection, the right degree of hardness, proper working qualities, etc. The artistic results are those that appeal purely to the eye or to our cultivated sense of what is desirable. There is no doubt that a great deal of tin could be saved if there were not a demand for certain pleasing effects. How can this saving be brought about? The users of tin hearing alloys are not the only ones involved in this question. The manufacturers of solder and babbitt have for a long time sought to give certain appearances to their fabricated bars and ingots in order to make them more salable. The user of a solder is very apt to judge of its working qualities by the appearance of the bar; the same thing is true with regard to babbitts. WITHOUT diffusion taking place in liquid metals and alloys, no castings could be made; it is therefore the most important factor affecting the structure of metals. Diffusion involves the interchange of atoms, a process which takes place during the life history of an ingot. In the liquid, atoms are in a state of high thermal agitation, but this thermal vibration is reduced in amplitude with falling temperature. When solidification sets in, the atoms arrange themselves on an ordered space lattice and the changes in structure which take place in the solid are due to the interchange of atoms on this space lattice. The rate of atomic interchange-e.g., of diffusion-is most rapid at temperatures close to the melting point and decelerates as the temperature is lowered. At room temperature, the rate of diffusion is practically negligible in most alloys, and any change in structure can only be brought about by using methods which will accelerate the rate of diffusion. The rate of diffusion depends on three factors (I) temperature; (2) concentration gradient and (3) activation energy. The growth of grains and particles in the solid alloy also depend on these factors and are therefore intimately associated with diffusion. The rate of homogenization in a cast alloy depends on several factors, such as: (I) rate of solidification, which involves grain and particle size which, in their turn, depend on diffusion: (2) the nature of the constituents; (3) the temperature interval between the melting point of the metal or alloy and the temperature at which it is being heat-treated. It is well known that coarse, cast structures are extremely difficult-if possible to homogenize, and the finer the grain size and particle size, the more readily solid solution will take place. The rate of diffusion depends, also, largely on the nature of the constituents; for instance, copper and magnesium form solid solutions with aluminum quite readily but nickel and iron do not; neither do certain intermetallic compounds, such as alpha and beta FeSi. Furthermore, the actual formation of intermetallic compounds may be a very slow process, particularly when they are formed in the solid state as equilibrium products. For example, ßFeSi is formed in the solid as the result of the reaction aFeSi + Al?ß FeSi. The particles of aFeSi become sur¬rounded with a reaction ring of ßßFeSi. This layer is formed as the result of diffusion of atoms taking place between the aluminum matrix and aFeSi. As the amount of ßFeSi surrounding the core of aFeSi increases the concentration gradient becomes low and so the rate of diffusion of atoms also decreases until it practically ceases. This occurs after a comparatively thin layer of ßFeSi has been formed. It follows that when intermetallic compounds of this type are formed in the solid, as the result of diffusion, it is generally impossible ever to attain equilibrium, since the forma-

UNDERGRADUATES in mining engineering may be prepared for work by giving them sound instruction in the courses generally considered essential to the profession. The industry is not deeply concerned about the details of those courses. The average man in the coal industry does not wish to insist upon a rigid program. Therefore, he differs little from those in the teaching profession who evidently are not unanimous in their opinions, or all college catalogs would be alike. For the good of the profession, it is just as well that there should be differences in regard to details. It appears that students graduating in mining engineering from the accredited institutions receive similar instruction. It is taken for granted that the graduate will have a good understanding of English, mathematics, mechanics, electricity, chemistry, physics, geology, and surveying, in addition to his major courses in mining. Somewhat belatedly, industry hopes he will have had at least an introduction to the subject of labor relations, the importance of which is only too clear at present. The coal industry expects, of course, that students in mining engineering will be taught the strictly mining subjects by men who have had practical experience in the mines and who keep themselves well informed in regard to current methods. While the undergraduate is subject to the control of members of the teaching profession, industry expects him to be trained in certain ways that are not a part of his textbooks, but can be made an inseparable part of his development by the skillful supervision of his teachers. Of the desired characteristics, dependability is of the utmost importance. Probably most employers would overlook certain short-comings if the young graduate demonstrated that he was thoroughly dependable. If he always appeared at the right place at the right time with the proper equipment, he would soon be well established as a welcome member of his organization. The graduate who gets a reputation for being undependable will have little opportunity for advancement. Closely allied to dependability is loyalty. Athletic teams and social groups in college tend to develop loyalty which may well be carried over into industry. This does not mean that the graduate has to be satisfied with customary practices. The average manager is glad to see the graduate make constructive criticism as long as he demonstrates his loyalty at the same time. It is important that his loyalty keeps him alert arid ready to take helpful action for the benefit of his organization, and especially to stand with it during times of stress. With or without an introduction to labor relations in college, the graduate is expected to develop ability in this most important field. Beginning with himself, he will find it essential to deal agreeably with his immediate associates. Getting along in friendly fashion with his own small group will be a great help as his responsibilities increase and he is required to deal with larger numbers of persons. On a higher scale, his interest in his community may grow at the same time by voluntary work in any one of a great number of useful activities. Industry expects the graduate engineer to be a mature man at the time he gets his first job. Supposing that he has better than average intelligence, industry expects him to continue to grow intellectually and to fit himself for responsible jobs when they are offered to him. For this reason, employers are apt to look over his college record to see what he did that would indicate his fitness for leadership. There is interest in knowing what he did beyond the requirements. As evidence of his mental growth, it is expected that the graduate will do independent thinking; that he will not take too much for granted. When he reads a report, he should develop the ability to see whether the subject is new or whether it is just a description of an old method that has been superseded by something better. For the same reason, the graduate should be able to accept conditions that have been arrived at by sound experience rather than cling to something else that seems better in theory. In this connection, it may be remarked that the ability to operate successfully a personal budget will be noteworthy, as it may be assumed that a man who knows how to conduct his own affairs will be prepared to assume the larger responsibilities of industry. Membership in AIME will indicate to the employer that the graduate is interested in the mining industry as a whole. Therefore, it is good evidence of something more than a local outlook. Quite apart from college training and mental ability, the newly employed graduate will be expected to be willing to do hard manual labor for a time. This will give him an understanding of the actual conditions of work done by those he supervises later. He will gain their confidence and be able to see that the work is carried on in a safe and efficient manner. Part of this experience may be acquired in his summer vacations during his undergraduate career. Such work would make a favorable impression on a prospective employer, especially if the graduate showed a willingness to continue it until he was prepared for something better. To summarize, the man in authority in the coal industry will not quarrel with the professor of mining engineering over details of curriculum. He will be pleased if the school sends him graduates who possess a good foundation in the courses studied, and who may be depended upon to do their work faithfully and intelligently. Such men will be ready when the time comes to assume their places as leaders of an essential industry.
