ONE of the principal factors that have contributed to the hesitancy of design engineers to use metal-powder parts is the difficulty experienced in the determination of the mechanical properties of compacted components. Because standard test: methods cannot usually be applied in the inspection of such parts, and because adequate special test methods have not been developed, it has been considered desirable to investigate the methods that are applicable. These may then be included in specifications for metal-powder materials' and components in order that the design engineer may be assured that the subject parts possess the desired mechanical properties for satisfactory performance. It is known that direct relationships exist between usually nonmeasurable properties as tensile strength and elongation and shear strength and the angle through which compacts may be plastically deformed before fracturing. These correlations are valuable in the inspection of specific parts, but it is necessary to set up standards before they may be satisfactorily employed. Apart from the use of correlations, the number and character of the inspection methods that are applicable to almost all powder parts is limited to three-chemical analysis, density, and hardness. The last of these may or may' not be a pertinent characteristic, since the indentation hardness of many powdered-metal materials is so low as to have little significance. It is, however, occasionally desirable to use hardness measurements as an indication of the uniformity of the structure of pieces of a given type. Chemical analysis reveals very little about the physical properties of metal-powder compacts, since the unpressed powder is usually of a composition almost identical with that of the finished pieces. Density determinations are simple, to perform and have the advantage of being nondestructive in character. If the dimensions of a machine part are known (and usually they are), the average density may be determined by weighing a given number of pieces and dividing by the calculated volume of the parts. More accurate measurements may be made by the water-displacement method. , It. is recognized that mechanical properties of metal-powder materials are related to their density, but usually these relations are determined for only one type of powder, processed under a given set of conditions. Comparisons of the properties of compacts formed from different types of powders are made on the basis of compacting... pressures instead of density, and for. this reason the results obtained by using powders of different types appear widely variant.

Pressures developed by the coal during the coking process have been responsible for serious trouble to many companies that operate or build by-product coke ovens. The insidious nature of this trouble is indicated by the fact that oven operators, unless they have ascertained the characteristics of the coals they use, cannot determine the existence of dangerous pressures until after the damage has been done. A rather popular misconception is that ease of pushing of the charge at the completion of the coking period indicates that no dangerous pressure has been developed, but this is far from the truth; pressures developed during the coking period are often completely dissipated by the shrinkage of the charge in the completion of coking, and so any criterion based on the ease of pushing is futile. However, methods of testing coals are available that will definitely distinguish the dangerous coals from those that are safe, and such methods have been brought to a high degree of certainty. The operator should take no risk that involves either a lack of knowledge of the behavior of coals during coking or the failure to believe that certain of the coals or coal mixtures can cause damage to the oven structure. This merely tends to minimize the problem and leads to claims that coking coals of all kinds may be carbonized with no danger of damage to the oven structure provided some particular kind of byproduct oven is used. This lack of appreciation of the true situation is in itself one of the main factors leading to damage of coke-oven structures. Coals that develop more than a certain safe pressure cannot be used in by-product coke ovens without causing damage to the side flue walls. The following paper presents a highly certain method for the measurement of the pressures developed during the carbonization of coal—a method that is the culmination of many years of work on the problem in which a number of methods for the purpose were investigated and used. While actual pressures found may appear to be small when expressed in pounds per square inch, the number of square inches in each oven wall is so large that the total pressure on the oven wall becomes an enormous load.

A short time ago, one of the large steel companies courteously furnished the author with detailed records of the operations of a considerable number of iron blast furnaces over a period of two months. These will be made the basis of a subsequent study, but in beginning this study one of the first points requiring consideration was the probable error of the records, for what otherwise might be regarded as significant differences of performance under different conditions were perhaps really due to errors of observation, or failure to observe and record variations. If it is assumed, in blast-furnace records and calculations, that known quantities or factors are constant, .when as a matter of fact they are variable, the effects of these variations may erroneously be ascribed to some other cause. This is quite clearly expressed in the following quotation from E. Buckingham:l Theory always operates on an ideally simplified picture of reality because real phenomena are unmanageably complicated. The results obtained are not exactly true for any real phenomenon, though they may be for an ideal one; and the approxi-mation with which a theoretical equation, however obtained, represents the actual facts, always depends on the approximation in essentials between the ideal picture and its real prototype. The purpose of dimensional reasoning is to find out how some quantity which is involved in the phenomenon under consideration is related to certain others; or to find the relation connecting two or more quantities which vary, or may vary, simultaneously during the course of the phenomenon. Since we know that we must have a complete equation to start with, we begin by thinking the matter over, to see whether the quantities we have in mind are the only ones involved. Usually it is evident that they are not; so we next make a list of all the quantities we can think of which might under any circumstances be important. Upon considering this list, which is often a long one, it is usually evident that under the actual circumstances a number of these quantities may safely be ignored; so we cross them off the list and thus pass from our most general conception of the phenomenon to an ideal simpler one, in which these quantities are not involved at all.

Ralston—The fact that none of the organizations that have worked on these ammoniacal leaching processes have contributed discussion of Mr. Caron's papers today is a matter of some disappointment. Adaptations, modifications and improvements have been made by several organizations or individuals and to complete the record I want to document a number of them. The Nicaro Nickel Co. operated a Government owned plant at Nicaro, Oriente, Cuba, during the past war. A report on the project was written for Reconstruction Finance Corp. and is in the document file collected by the Office of Technical Services, Commerce Department and filed with the Library of Congress, where it can be consulted or bibliofilm or photostat copies obtained by asking for copies of PB 97271. Nicaro Nickel Co. has obtained a series of U.S. Patents, my list (probably incomplete) of which bears the following numbers: 2,400,098; 2,400,114; 2,400,115; 2,400,461; 2,400,612; 2,458,902 and 2,473,795. International Nickel Co. has also studied the problem and U.S. Patent 2,478,942 shows that some of the complications involving occasional low extractions have been unraveled. Forward, Samis, and Kudryk, of the University of British Columbia, have also published a study of copper-nickel sulphide concentrate.' Others are interested and it is evident that this type of hydrometallurgy is likely to find a happy application in the not-too-far distant future. Caron's two papers practically amount to a summation of his life's work on the important subject of nickeliferous iron ores and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is fortunate to have been chosen the medium of publication. M. Rey—The ammonia leaching process has been the subject of certain studies in New Caledonia, but at the present time, the conditions are not very favorable to its adoption. The process is a combination of a thermal and a hydrometallurgical process. As a result, the first costs and the operative costs are rather high. To counteract this unfavorable situation, it would be necessary to make a very high extraction. But unfortunately, the process is delicate and in spite of all of Caron's valuable work, there are still many unknown factors. It is difficult to obtain regularly a high extraction, exceeding 75 to 80 pct. It would be interesting to have the opinion of Inter-national Nickel on the process and to know what the Dutch are doing in Celebes. M. H. Caron (author's reply)—I am quite familiar with the different types of nickel and cobalt ores as found on New Caledonia, and it may be pointed out that the Celebes ores are quite the same in their properties. Their behavior when treating the ores by the ammonia-leaching process is also alike and in my opinion, there is no reason why a high extraction of the New Caledonian ores could not be obtained if the process is properly applied. For the sake of completeness I may add that one of my patents has not been discussed in the papers. This patent deals particularly with the treatment of serpentine nickel ores. Gilbert H. Cady (Senior Geologist, Head of Coal Division Emeritus, Illinois State Geological Survey, Ur-bans)— Those coal mining and preparation engineers and operators who read this article will probably be most concerned with those parts which deal with the applied aspects of coal petrology in the fields of mining and technology. Actually the two categories overlap to such a degree that they are essentially one. The article appears to suggest that there are two points of veiw in the field of applied coal petrology. From one viewpoint the interest is in the attributes of the various macerals (Fig. 4)—vitrinite, exinite, and inertinite—-in terms of utilization (when the coal is burned, coked, gasified, hydrogenated, etc.). From the other point of view, assuming that the macerals do possess individuality in behavior, interest attaches to the possibility that coal of a particular type (maceral composition) can be prepared by discriminating methods of preparation and blending. Most of the 29 items listed for mining and technology can be assigned to one or the other of these two categories. Somewhat the same simplicity that resides in the items of the proximate chemical analysis is desirable for the petrologic analysis. This simplicity appears to be fairly well achieved by the group maceral device provided mineral matter is also included. At present, without fully adequate experimental substantiation, the three types of material represented by the group macerals vitrinite, exinite, and inertinite are regarded as sufficiently different in composition and properties so that the preponderance of any one type gives the coal distinctive properties provided it is not too high in rank. This appears to be increasingly true with coals of decreasing rank from medium volatile bituminous coals downward. The article reflects the great emphasis placed on the technique of descriptive coal petrology in America. Such description has resulted in a good understanding of the nature of the fundamental variability in the physical composition of bituminous coals. Such understanding has been attained very largely by the thin section technique used in coal bed profile analysis introduced by R. Thiessen after the manner suggested by the data assembled in Table 11. In contrast, the group maceral concept of coal analysis in terms of the categories indicated on the left hand side of Fig. 4 is particularly useful for broken coal analysis and applied coal petrology, in which evaluation is largely based on quantitative concepts. It is inadequately emphasized in this article that although the Thiessen procedure is suitable for the purpose of petrologic description in which texture and orientation are of critical importance, it is less well adapted to the technological uses of applied coal petrology. No doubt those persons whose interest may have been aroused in the possibilities of more refined coal preparation by this and other recent contributions to the literature of coal petrology will understand that certain technical aspects of coal petrology, particularly in the field of descriptive petrology, are still a matter of some controversy among the coal petrologists, but they will also appreciate that Schopf has made an important contribution to the field of coal petrology in America by pointing out that such petrology requires consideration of disoriented or broken coal samples and that results are expressed less in descriptive terms than in quantitative values with respect to the four types of material composing coal—-vitrinite, exinite, inertinite, and mineral matter. Unfortunately because so much American coal petrology has been descriptive of the coal in the bed there is a dearth of literature on applied coal petrology. Research and experimental data in this field are greatly needed.

The energy which causes oil and gas to flow from a reservoir formation into a well depends upon a differential between the formation pressure and the pressure at the well face. This differential pressure may be the result of any one of at least three forces, or a combination of them. Gas under pressure in an oil-producing formation (part of the gas may be in solution and part in contact with the oil) is the principal source of energy for producing oil in most fields. In some fields, however, hydrostatic pressure due to water in contact with the oil and/or the force of gravity may be important factors in causing oil to flow into a well. Still another force affecting oil movement is suggested by some students of the problem; the force dependent upon the phenomenon of capillarity. Hydrostatic pressure is seldom the only source of energy in an oil sand, but it is commonly an adjunct to the compressed gas in the formation. Where this condition prevails, increased production may be obtained provided the water encroachment is properly controlled. In addition to the water-drive effect, the hydrostatic head may tend to maintain pressure in the formation by progressively reducing the volume of the reservoir as withdrawals to the surface are made through the producing wells. The action of the force of gravity on the oil in a formation is of relatively small importance, from an energy standpoint, until the last stage of the productive life of a well is reached. This force is the only remaining natural source of energy in some of the eastern fields, but in most of the deep wells of the Mid-Continent and California districts the force of gravity can be precluded as a source of energy, because the wells reach their economic limit of production before the force of gravity becomes an important factor in moving oil to the wells. Since the majority of fields produce oil chiefly by reason of the gas pressure in the oil horizons, the following treatment deals mainly with factors that influence gas-energy relationships. BY the courtesy of Mr. Charles W. Jenks, of Boston, one of the owners of this interesting mine, I am enabled to lay before the Institute a suite of specimens, illustrating its peculiar formation and the paragenesis of mineral species which it presents; and a recent brief visit and rapid reconnoissance of the locality permit me to supplement this exhibition with a general description, based upon personal observation. The mine is situated upon the Culsagee Fork of the Tennessee River, in Macon County, North Carolina, a few miles from Franklin. The most practicable route by which it can at present be visited is by wagon (or preferably on horseback) from Seneca City, S. C., a station on the Charlotte and Atlanta Air Line Railroad. The itinerary is as follows: to Walhalla,* nine miles; Walhalla to Highlands, twenty-nine miles; Highlands to the Culsagee, fourteen miles. By passing the night at or near Highlands, the mine can be reached and examined and the return to Highlands made on the second day; and the round trip, if performed in the saddle, can be completed in three days from Seneca City. It is not easy, with due regard to steed and rider, to do it in less time. The rough and precipitous mountain roads do not permit rapid travel ; and the journey is at best a fatiguing one. But its slight hardships are overpaid by the stimulating effect of the climate and the great beauty of the scenery, both of which are destined to become more widely known than at present, to seekers for health and pleasure. Indeed the town of Highlands, already named, is almost entirely made up of northern immigrants, attracted by these advantages and by the inducement of cheap land for agriculture and stock-raising. The Culsagee or Sugartown fork of the Tennessee traverses the belt of ancient crystalline schists on the west flank of the Blue Ridge. This belt abounds in valuable minerals. Among those of the nonmetallic class may be mentioned graphite, soapstone, serpentine, ashes- * A branch or cross railroad is in operation as far as Walhalla ; but the single daily train runs at an hour not convenient for this expedition ; and Seneca City is probably the best starting-point. At all events, I obtained there an excellent mount for the trip.

NUMEROUS brands of virgin pig lead are used in the manufacture of lead and lead-alloy cable sheath for commercial cables. In changing from one brand of pig lead to another a readjustment of press operating conditions is nearly always necessary. This is due largely to different flow characteristics, and some brands extrude at a much lower pressure than others; for example, copper-bearing lead requires much more pressure than a low-bismuth lead under the same operating conditions. With the modern type of lead press the extrusion practice in general differs very little. Molten lead at a temperature of 375° to 400° C. (710° to 750° F.) is cast in a water-cooled cylinder and allowed to cool or solidify into a slug for six to nine minutes. . This slug is forced into the die block and around the core tube through which the cable runs. The die block is held at an optimum temperature by means of gas flames, usually 175° to 225° C. (350° to 4.35° F.). Measurements of the tem¬perature of the cable sheath taken at the time of extrusion have covered a range of 190° to 225° C. (375° to 435° F.). According to Tammann, the rate of extrusion for a metal under constant pressure through a simple orifice is almost doubled for each 10° C. rise in temperature. Because of the irregularity of die-block construction, such a great increase is not obtained in lead-cable extrusion practice. To obtain more" definite information about the effect of small per¬centages of metals usually present as impurities in virgin pig lead, a series of compression tests were made covering several different brands of lead and various alloys. Since the usual temperature of the sheath is approxi¬mately 200.° C. as it emerges from the die block, these compression tests were all performed at 200° C. Five different brands of virgin pig lead were selected, as follows: Brand A: A desilverized western lead of very high purity. This lead contains neither copper nor bismuth. Brand B: A bismuth-free southeastern Missouri lead, usually con¬taining 0.05 to 0.08 per cent copper. Brand C: A copper-free mid-western desilverized lead of very good grade, usually containing around 0.06 to 0.10 per cent bismuth.

While a country is small and its coal fields are not many, it may be possible to classify its coals on some basis that avoids both overlap and inconsistency, and that may be satisfactory to the particular country, such as geographic distribution or geologic age, or regional uses. In the adjoining country, however, the coals may differ more or less; broad areas may have escaped the erasure of transition zones by erosion, and the stages of alteration of the coals may lead to a classification different from and even incompatible with that of the other country. Such classifications, developed primarily along national lines, are essentially opportunistic. Further, many even of the "use" terms that have been in more common employment with a degree of international application have lost their significance and value, due to changes in industrial methods and urban life. When the number of coal fields is large and the classification is designed to cover the coals of many countries, the groups or divisions into which the coals are integrated are found to verge one into another; and, though the main divisions may be so naturally composed and oriented that they are relatively distinct and readily separated as entities or units when taken by themselves, the sequence, through classes, groups, and subdivisions, is so complete that we find transition zones through which boundaries must be arbitrarily drawn with minute technical definition. This situation, which is conspicuously illustrated in the United States, is due to the progressive evolution of all coals, irrespective of geologic age, from peats to successively higher ranks, which, if the progressive alteration goes far enough, ends with graphite. This evolution is now firmly established and its complete acceptance is but a matter of time. A classification of all coals in all coal fields can not escape this fact and must take into account all the stages in the transformation of the fuel from rank to rank through division to division, and through group to group. The plan here outlined aims at a natural classification of coals based on their evolution from peats to graphite. As in other classifications, the differentiation of the various groups and divisions takes account of changes resulting from the progressive losses of moisture and .of oxygen of constitution; the relative conservation of carbon; the progressive increase in fixed carbon (inverse to the loss of volatile matter) in

The il'lott and Jones theory of thermoelectricity predicts that the absolute thermoelectric power of alloys of transition and noble metals should be a maximum when the concentration of the noble metal is approximately 55 to 60 at. pct. An examination of the emf of a series of relatively pure alloys of copper and nickel shows that the predicted maximum occurs at about 57 at. pct Cu. This excellent agreement with the theory is considered to substantiate the Mott and Jones theory of thermoelectricity for binary alloys of transition elements. This theory is extended to show that the emf behavior of dilute, ternary copper-nickel base alloys, which contain approsimately 60 pct Cu and 40 pct Ni, may be described in terms of a scattering mechanism. The scattering effect of a third element is demonstrated to be a function of its valence and its period in the periodic table. Small amounts of solute elements have additive scattering effects upon the emf of the Cu-Ni base. The Mott and Jones equation is modified to include this scattering parameter. This adaptation accurately describes the thermoelectric behavior of ternary and quaternary CLL-Ni base alloys. An empirical form of the modified Mott and Jones equation is derived which permits the calculation of thermoelectric power with an average error of less than 0.4 pct at 500 "C. CONSTANTAN has long been used as a thermocouple element. Its approximate composition varies from 50 pct Cu, 50 pct Ni to 65 pct Cu, 35 pct Ni. Small amounts of manganese, iron, and other elements have been used to modify the composition in order that the resultant emf vs platinum conforms to nationally accepted table. Adjustments of this type are made on a purely empirical basis. Constantan was originally made in Germany and was imported into this country for thermoelectric and electrical resistance purposes. During World War I, the supply of this material became seriously depleted. The work of Bash4 was done in this period in order to develop a satisfactory substitute for the imported material. Bash's empirical work on Cu-Ni alloys is still the basis for all commercial constantans made in this country. No reexamination of the electrical properties of this system has been made, despite the fact that it is now well known that Bash's alloys contained impurities which strongly affected their thermoelectric behavior.

The Miami orebody occurs in an altered Pinal schist. It is popularly known as one of the '(porphyry " deposits but, as at Inspiration and Ray, the ore is an altered mincralized Pinal schist. The orebody mined is the zone of secondary enrichment. Speaking in general terms, the area of the orebody at Miami may be considered as 1000 ft. long and 800 ft. wide. The vertical thickness varies from 200 to 400 ft., so that it is an extremely irregular mass. The study of the ground movement and resulting subsidence at Miami is complicated by the fact that the formation is not homogeneous throughout the mining area, the orebody terminating on its eastern extremity at a fault plane adjoining the Gila conglomerate. This conglomerate is a recent sedimentary deposit somewhat analogous to glacial drift and consists of boulders of granite, schist, and other material cemented with clay, and at times is quite hard. The fault dips eastward at an angle of 45". The original method of mining was top slicing, the slices being 10 ft. thick. At first, there was a good deal of experimenting with mining methods. Some undercut rooms were tried, and the stopes were filled with broken ore with the idea of removing intervening pillars by top slicing. The adoption of the top-slicing method in itself involved considerable experimenting, including some experiments with a long-wall system. The method finally adopted involved the operation of top slicing areas 250 ft. square, each with a central supply raise and ore-gathering raises, each block being worked as a unit. Mining operations in the Captain orebody, which connects with the boundary of the Inspiration property, were started by the room-and-pillar system, the rooms extending across the orebody, with widths of 10 to 15 ft., with 15- to 10-ft. pillars between. The intent was to operate the rooms as shrinkage stopes, permitting the pillars to crush when the ore was drawn from the rooms. It was found that the shrinkage stoping was unnecessary, so a system of block caving was adopted. This system was so successful in the Captain orebody that, about three years ago, the method of mining in the orebody was changed from top slicing to block caving, the method now in use. Having occasion several years since to make ferrous sulphide, I attempted to do so by fusing a mixture of coal-brasses (FeS2) and dried ferrous sulphate. A very nice-looking sulphide was obtained; but on attempting to use it, I found that it was insoluble in dilute hydrochloric and sulphuric acids. The subject was laid aside at the time, but has since been taken up; and some curious results have been obtained, which I believe are new. I have made the material by all of the following methods and the product seems to be pretty much the same, however obtained : (a) FeS2 heated to fusion. (b) FeS2, and FeSO4 heated to fusion. (c) FeS2, and Fe2O3 heated to fusion. (d) FeS2, and FeCO3, heated to fusion. (e) FeSO4, and S heated to fusion. (f) Fe2O3 and S heated to fusion. Obtained in this way the mass after cooling breaks easily and is very nearly black in color. On the upper surface of the fused cake the color is generally reddish or brownish black. When this is treated with dilute sulphuric or hydrochloric acid, it refuses to dissolve; but if touched with the point of a file or any piece of wrought-iron, solution of the sulphide takes place with the evolution of sulphuretted hydrogen. If the iron is removed the evolution of gas ceases, and only begins again when the iron is again brought into contact with the fused sulphide. The same thing happens if the iron is connected with the sulphide by means of a platinum wire. But in all the samples of fused sulphide I have obtained, if the iron is allowed to remain in contact with the sulphide for a certain time (which varies with different samples of the fused sulphide) and is then removed, solution of the sulphide continues. Zinc, tin, and magnesium have the same effect as iron. In hydrochloric acid aluminium acts more rapidly even than iron. In sulphuric acid it has little if any effect. Copper in HCl, when brought in contact with the fused sulphide, dissolves quietly without evolution of gas. The solution of copper chloride formed becomes,as it flows down over the sulphide, converted into copper sulphide.

Discussion of the paper of J. NORMAN BULKLEY, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 355 to 373. GRAHAM BRIGHT, E.. Pittsburgh, Pa.-On p. 265 mention is made of a change from steam hoist to electric hoist. The arrangement mentioned, of using a geared motor, and having the gearing and counter-shaft in a separate, self-contained unit, and then connecting that to the hoist by means of a flexible coupling, is very good. Sometimes, however, it is necessary to change a geared hoist over to an electric hoist. 'In that case the motor could be either direct-connected to the countershaft or geared to the countershaft, making a double-reduction gearing. Trouble has been experienced with this method on account of the hoist not being designed for electric drive. It may be of a rather light construction which will not stand the forces obtained by steam operation, the maximum being determined by the steam pressure which can be obtained in the cylinder. With motors of hoisting types, torques, can be obtained, which are so far in excess of anything that the steam engine could give, that this sometimes results in disaster when a motor is applied to a hoist of that type. If the operator gets a little careless, he may overstrain the hoist, And cause damage, so that this question should be looked into when changing from a steam hoist to an electric hoist. The hoist should be rugged enough to stand the torques which may be attained by careless operation, in which case, instead of using a three-bearing motor, with a pinion between two of the bearings, it is much better to arrange for a two-bearing motor, arranging for a coupling through a flexible coupler. In another place trouble is mentioned as due to the vibration of a geared hoisting motor. That can be overcome by supplying a flexible coupling between the motor and the hoist proper. You will find, if a flexible coupling is furnished, that the motor troubles will largely disappear. K. A. PAULY (communication to the Secretary*), Schenectady, N. Ways are discussed of appraising chances in conformance with probability principles, and graphs are suggested to show tonnages, grades and the corresponding judged expectancies. Introduction When exploratory development of a mineral deposit is contemplated, three interrelated questions normally must be answered before a sound decision can be reached. How much will the program cost? How much will the anticipated ore add to the immediate value of the mine? And what is the chance of developing this ore? To justify development, the deposit should present a favorable disparity between the three factors, cost, chance and return. If, for example, there is a 50-50 chance of success, the ore that is sought should have an immediate worth (after deducting all subsequent charges that it must bear) of more than twice the cost of the development. Likewise, if the chance of finding the ore is but one in five, that ore should enhance the immediate value of the mine by more than five times the cost of developing it- With sound economic and operating assumptions, the cost of exploratory development and a present value of anticipated ore may be estimated within reasonable limits. Less general attention has been given to appraising ore chances in comparable terms. The exploratory experience of the mining industry is broad enough that knowledge, vision and judgment may be combined to yield more tangible evaluations of Ore expectancy than are now customary' A way of making such appraisals is suggested herein. The mathematics of probabilities cannot be applied directly to the search for ore. By coupling applicable principles of probability, however, with pertinent experience gained in mineral exploration, an estimate often can be made of the chance of finding a certain tonnage and grade of Ore in a specific location. INTRODUCTION The primary purpose of comminution circuits in the mineral industry is to reduce an ore to a particle size that will permit separation of the valuable minerals from its gangue constituents. Wide variations in the mineral content and physical characteristics can and do occur throughout a given mineral deposit From the standpoint of their effects on the comminution characteristics of an orebody, these variations may not be identified by the normal sampling and analysis procedures utilized to delimit an orebody and to characterize its grade distribution. The proper design of a comminution circuit for a mineral deposit is very important to the success of that enterprise. It is also an expensive unit process both from the standpoint of capital and operating costs. It is, therefore, essential that any sampling program be designed to identify the variations that may occur that will affect this circuit. Because of the variety of comminution systems that are available, it is also essential that the sampling and subsequent evaluation program be sufficiently comprehensive to identify potentially inappropriate systems or flowsheets. It would be impossible to describe in a single chapter the techniques and approaches that should be utilized for sampling every type of orebody. Each orebody is unique and requires a sampling and testing program designed to its specific requirements for exploration, characterization and circuit design. The following is a general discussion of the guidelines to be used and considerations to be made in establishing such a program. SAMPLE SELECTION When sampling an ore deposit for the purposes of equipment and flowsheet selection for comminution, it is important that the sample composites for grind testing be chosen on the basis of how they will affect the comminution circuit rather than just how they might affect the subsequent metallurgical operations. For example, grindability, classification and liberation size characteristics are more important to the comminution circuit than ore grade. Mineral deposits may contain a multiplicity of ore types that can vary extensively in the dissemination of minerals and optimum liberation size requirements; and may also vary as much as 100% in ore hardness. The accumulation of samples for grind characterization should be done in such a way as to allow the identification of this variation. A proper mineralogical evaluation of the samples obtained to characterize an ore deposit can be a great aid in identifying the individual ore types within the deposit
