(written discussion*) .—The fact that, after a change in the hours of labor, as much work is found to be done in 8 hr. as was accomplished in 10, probably results from the more rigid examination of operating methods that is made when the management faces new and more difficult conditions. Although A better working pace will prevail, most of the gain will result from economies of plan and only a part of it from the improved effciency of labor. The Iabor of shoveling is so severe that it may be easily believed that a working period of less than 7 hr. will give maximum results, but there arc many other occupations about a mine in which this is not true, and in which the rate of accomplishment is in proportion to the time employed, up to 9 or 10 hours. Mr. Harley's study of shoveling has becn thorough, and demonstrates the benefit of investigation and education even in such simple work, but his reference to methods of payment opens a subject even more important in mine management. The efficiency of labor may be excellent, but unless a method of equitable payment accompanies it, the result will be only temporary. With strict but sympathetic supervision, a good average day's work can be obtained; but with the exception of those unusual men who cannot be restrained from working to their limit, an average daily wage does not bring out the remarkable performance of which many men are capable. There is also a considerable variation in the average amount accomplished, dependent on the supply of Iabor. This can readily be shown by any labor record that covers several periods of shortage or superabundance of labor. An increase in the daily wage in the time of labor shortage does not necessarily bring out an increased day's work; there is usuaIly a decrease in labor efficiency at such times regardless of the wage, whenever a daily rate is used. Rewards to individuals for exceptional performance appearing as an increased rate of pay cannot be made in a large organization without bad feeling. In a small organization, an individual's ability may be so well recognized that different rates of pay can be applied. EARLY in the development of every oil field, the operators of relatively large tracts of land must decide upon a spacing plan for the wells to be drilled upon their respective tracts. Usually it is desirable to have a system of regular spacing laid out over the entire tract, making such adjustments as may be necessary near land boundaries. Unless the dip of the producing formation is very steep, the equilateral triangular arrangement is the one most generally preferred, for the very good reason that it gives the maximum amount of drainage area for the wells up to the limit at which mutual drainage interference begins. Assuming that the equilateral triangular pattern is to be used, there still remains to he decided the matter of distance between wells. Many variable factors enter into the problem of proper spacing, some of which are physical and some economic. It is not the purpose of this paper to discuss these factors, as that has been done in several comprehensive articles during the past few years. In the end the decision must be based upon an estimate of the relative importance of various factors which apply to the field in question and to economic conditions in the oil industry at the time the development is getting under way. Even if the best possible spacing distance should be chosen when the problem arises, changing economic conditions and variation in physical conditions in different parts of the field may cause the original choice to become more or less unsatisfactory. Obviously, it is advantageous, once a spacing plan has been adopted, to avoid alteration of it as the field becomes better known or as conditions in the industry change, and yet be able to vary somewhat, the acreage per well in extending the area of development. Or, it may be desired to provide for an ultimate spacing considerably closer than conditions seem to warrant early in the development of the field. With these contingencies in mind, it is of interest to examine the possibilities which the equilateral triangular system affords. Because of the necessity for taking regularly occurring open-flow tests in prorated high-pressure oil fields, much gas is turned to atmosphere by way of vertical vent lines leading away from the oil and gas separator. In the past, measurement of such gas has been accomplished by several methods, usually by use of the open-flow Pitot tube. The use of the closed-flow Pitot tube has been avoided apparently chiefly because the ordinary vent-line hook-up makes it necessary to apply the instrument closer to a bend, valve, or obstruction in the pipe than is recommended by rules of good practice. The many advantages that would result from the application of the closed-flow Pitot tube prompted investigation of the actual effect upon quantity rate of flow measurements computed from data obtained with the tube in a normal working position, which is closer to the tee at the base of the vent riser than is usually considered as giving highly accurate results. An effort Was first made to compare the results thus obtained to those under ideal conditions and at high velocities To make this comparison, knowledge of the characteristics of gas flowing at very high velocities is essential. Research for such information indicated that little or no work had been done that would give data necessary for such a comparison, therefore the problem was changed to a test designed to determine the relationship between quantity rates of flow as measured by an orifice meter and a Pitot tube placed at the center of a pipe eight diameters from a tee or ell at the base of a vent riser, through which gas is flowing under low pressures at very high velocities. To determine this relationship, a series of tests was run on a number of 8-in. iron-pipe vent riser., in which the Pitot tube data were taken at the position as stated above. Gas from a wet-gas gathering system was passed through an orifice meter setting and thence to atmosphere by way of the vents. Data were taken simultaneously from the orifice meter and Pitot tube from which computations for comparisons were made. The actual method of comparison is discussed later in this paper. EUGENE COSTS, Calgary, Alberta (communication to the Secretary*).¬This new theory to account for the accumulation of commercial deposits of oil and gas, is deliberately and admittedly based on the hypothesis that the origin of these products is organic. Mr. Daly says (page 1142), "Should the organic origin of the petroleum that is found in pools be granted, the following interpretation is offered for the mechanics of its accumulation." But suppose the origin thus accepted by definition be incorrect, then what becomes of the diastrophic theory, Mr. Daly's interpretation? As Mr. Daly remarks himself (same page), "It is obvious that the history of petroleum will have to be entirely different, dependent upon its origin, either from emanations coming from the depths, or from organic decomposition in the strata themselves." Then why should one propound a theory, through which he is endeavoring to trace the history of petroleum, by starting with a definition of its origin? The origin should be the deduction, the forced conclusion of the theory, and not its starting point. Facts alone should be considered first, in any theory worth the name, until sufficient proofs have accumulated to permit of the deduction of a complete explanation for these facts. This would lead one to the origin through a real theory founded on facts, and not based on a preconceived idea perhaps true, but possibly fanciful. Mr. Daly's way can only lead on one road, namely the organic road, and, I repeat, it may be the wrong road. In the case of the petroleum deposits, as .I have endeavored to show in several papers on the subject, to which the reader may refer, the facts clearly lead to the force conclusion that their origin is not one of accumulations of hydrocarbons at first disseminated in the sedimentary strata but the reverse process of subsequent local infiltrations and impregnations of hydrocarbon emanations from the depths. This new theory, therefore, founded on, an erroneous conception of origin cannot be a help in the solution of the petroleum' problem, not any more than were the anti-theory or the hydraulic theory, both of which were also based on the same error, although Mr. Daly is inclined to think that the authors of these two theories did not accept the misconception boldly enough (page 1142). -

Numerous brands of virgin pig lead are used in the manufacture of lead and lead-alloy cable sheath for commercial cables. In changing from one brand of pig lead to another a readjustment of press operating conditions is nearly always necessary. This is due largely to different flow characteristics, and some brands extrude at a much lower pressure than others; for example, copper-bearing lead requires much more pressure than a low-bismuth lead under the same operating conditions. With the modern type of lead press the extrusion practice in general differs very little. Molten lead at a temperature of 375" to 400" C. (710" to 750" F.) is cast in a water-cooled cylinder and allowed to cool or solidify into a slug for six to nine minutes, This slug is forced into the die block and around the core tube through which the cable runs. The • die block is held at an optimum temperature by means of gas flames, usually 175" to 225" C. (350" to 435" F.). Measurements of the temperature of the cable sheath taken at the time of extrusion have covered a range of 190" to 225" C. (375" to 435" F.). According to Tammann, the rate of extrusion for a metal under constant pressure through a simple orifice is almost doubled for each 10" C. rise in temperature. Because of the irregularity of die-block construction, such a great increase is not obtained in lead-cable extrusion practice. To obtain more definite information about the effect of small percentages of metals usually present as impurities in virgin pig lead, a series of compression tests were made covering several different brands of lead and various alloys. Since the usual temperature of the sheath is approximately 200" C. as it emerges from the die block, these compression tests were all performed at 200" C. Five different brands of virgin pig lead were selected, as follows: Brand A: A desilverized western lead of very high purity. This lead contains neit,her copper nor bismuth. Brand B: A bismuth-free southeastern Missouri lead, usually containing 0.05 to 0.08 per cent copper. Brand C: A copper-free mid-western desilverized lead of very good grade, usually containing around 0.06 to 0.10 per cent bismuth.

The cases of no auxiliary ventilation and ventilation with tubing were mathematically modeled, using a turbulent dispersion model. The Scooptram® used to load is modeled as a variable-speed, variable-strength source of pollutants moving in and out of the dead-ended drift. Model predictions are compared to experimental measurements. A parametric analysis was performed to determine If a relationship existed between C02 and NO levels. It was concluded from this analysis that when modeling a load-haul-dump cycle, it is necessary to use a model that can predict changes in source strength as well as source location. Carbon dioxide was used as a tracer to calibrate the model since, knowing the fuel flow rate, it is possible to calculate C02 production. The model was then verified after this calibration process using additional experimental results. With the calibrated model, it is possible to predict pollutant concentrations at any location in the heading using an engine map and the previously calculated flow field.

Birmingham - A City With a Future COURTING new industries is the time honored duty of the chambers of commerce; but Birmingham, until recently, has done its courting without the benefit of troubadors. This is all changed now for the iron and steel industry is singing an enticing song about steel priorities for new industries from Birmingham's own mills. Along with the increasing industrialization of Birmingham there has been a marked influx of industry into the Southeast and neighboring areas in the south central states which augurs well for business in Birmingham. This important stronghold of the foundry industry (consuming 95 pct of Birmingham's merchant pig iron in 1950) has been the source of important announcements about additions to steel ingot capacity. The virtual abolition of basing point pricing gives the Birmingham iron and steel industry an advantage in the South's new markets. This means more business for Birmingham, but the problem of raw materials supplies is posed.

Since the discovery of the first-known rare earth elements more than a century ago, these metals have always been of academic interest. It is not so well known, however, that a rather stable, respectably large industry based on rare earths and their related materials has been in operation for more than 60 years. Rare earths, of course, are the elements having atomic numbers 57 through 71--lanthanum through lutetium in the periodic table. The most important commercial members of this group are mixtures of the lower atomic-numbered rare earths, and cerium. Although yttrium is not a rare earth, it occurs with rare earths and its properties are so similar to them that. it must be included in a discussion of these elements. In addition, thorium is important to most producers of rare earths because their ores generally contain this element. Thorium extractive metallurgy and technology is closely related to rare earth chemistry due to the frequent similarity of properties.

The development of microcracking with progressive strain through failure in an orthoquartzite has been studied by means of optical and electron microscopy of specimens deformed experimentally at 200 MPa confining pressure, 20°C. Microcrack maps and statistics have been prepared. The rock fails through the development of arrays of microcracks which form around grain boundaries and are initiated at notches on pore spaces. No special microstructural characteristic appears to be associated with the peak strength, and axially oriented cracks do not begin to develop until well past the strength peak. Axial microcracking is a precursor to shear fault localization. Because most cracks form in highly shear stressed orientations, it is inferred that most of the work done in rupturing the rock is against the frictional forces on crack surfaces. An attempt is made to integrate the work done in this way, to compare it with the work done by the external forces.

Within the last 15 years David Brown Gear Industries has manufactured approximately 200 large mill gears over 6m diam., 58 of them over 9 m and up to 12 m diam. The experience has not been without problems, due to a lack of clear understanding of the loads and stresses imposed on large gear wheels. American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA) practices suggest that a service factor be used for mill gears. But what is meant by "service factor"? The layman might be forgiven for believing that the term is synonymous with "safety factor," but this is certainly not true. The service factor is an aggregate of the following in some proportion: -An application factor, i.e., an allowance for the fact that systems do not run smoothly with uniform torque. -An ignorance factor covering the imperfections in the basic gear calculation. -Possibly a safety factor. In the following sections some of the ways in which the limits of applicability can be overstepped are discussed.

Use of coal thermal dryers has steadily increased since 1928 when one of the predecessor companies of the present Consolidation Coal Cu. constructed a complete preparation plant with thermal dryers. Today there are about 25 additional preparation plants that, all together, use over 65 individual thermal dryers of almost every type. The thermal dryer is a heat generator and the unit may have a separate furnace or a firebox that is an integral part of the dryer. It is also a materials handling device that allows an intimate mixture of wet coal and hot gases with instrumentation for temperature control and. in some cases, the more difficult flow rate of hot gases. The materials handling portion of the dryer is subject to the normal wear and teal of any similar device plus effects of heat, water vapor, moisture: and, sometimes, acid. With present emphasis on air pollution. most fine coal dryers have wet scrubbers.

ACID coal mine drainage presents a peculiarly difficult problem for two principal reasons. First is the fact that the amount of acid water discharged from active and abandoned mines constantly in- creases as coal fields are developed and thereby creates a steadily worsening nuisance of rapidly growing importance to the general public as well as to the coal industry. Second is the even more significant fact that there is no method yet known that will appreciably alleviate the acid water problem except at totally prohibitive cost to the coal operators. The problem is thus seen to be an urgent one. With a growing need for good quality water and a growing public demand for abatement of stream pollution, a large portion of the soft coal industry finds itself in the position of year by year dumping more and more acid into the streams and waterways and having no way in sight of improving the situation or even of keeping it from getting worse.

IT IS hardly to be doubted that the opportunity within the grasp of the mine manager for beneficent and helpful action in relation to young engineers seeking employment under him is very broad and very big. It is my experience that a manager usually has a strong inclination to help along those who have chosen the career which he has selected for himself, and to aid them and support them as their steps tread the paths which his own feet have previously followed. He has .a strong sympathy for them in their efforts, he almost yearns to shield them from the mistakes into which he himself fell, and to assist them to avoid the pit-falls of which he knows by bitter experience. Yes, this tendency and inclination is strongly developed in most managers, and they would welcome the opportunity of extending the helping hand, if they knew precisely how best this could be done.

The accompanying figures show a jig arranged for separating the middle product or middlings obtained in the concentration of certain ores, minerals, coal, etc. In the preparation for sizing, prior to jigging, of ore-bearing minerals, coal, etc., with their impurities, it is generally desirable to avoid reducing them to unnecessarily small sizes. Where the impurities adhere to the mineral particles or are disseminated through its mass, it is generally necessary to crush to such a fineness as will unlock the minerals from the gangue. If a considerable proportion of the material consists of mixtures of the minerals and gangue, each in large size, and a lesser proportion consists of a mixture of the two, in smaller sizes of various dimensions, it is not always desirable to reduce the whole to such size as would be required to liberate completely the pieces of ore and gangue in the finest mixtures. Still, the subject of iron ore is associated in peoples' minds mostly with the Lake Superior region and this is as it should be. The Minnesota Section meeting exposed the forces that over a period of two decades, 1950 to 1970, are revolutionizing the industry. The Lake Superior region has been at the center of these changes and has been deeply affected by them. The rise of foreign sources of iron ore that did not require beneficiation and taxation considerations were for a number of years a giant setback for the Lake Superior region and Minnesota in particular. However, the companies in this region have led the drive to improve the quality of ores which are culminating in the tailored pellet. This is a product in which iron content, silica, without significant impurities, is manufactured for optimum blast furnace performance. The oxide pellet does not seem to be the end as partially or prereduced pellets are closer at hand.

William Metcalf, Pittsburg, Pa. (communication to the Secretary*): I am greatly pleased that some one has at last reached what I have long regarded as the only rational explanation yet given of the reasons why steel hardens. Mr. Field claims originality; and doubtless he is entitled to it, but not to priority, mhich must be granted to Prof. John W. Langley.' The difference between them is that Langley says " Tension, probably molecular," and Field says " Tension, probably atomic "; in either case the vital thing after solution is tension. Mr. Field's argument carries with it the idea of increase of density with hardness; if he mill study the facts farther he will observe that the case is just the reverse; that is, the greater the hardness the less the specific gravity; it was just this fact that led Langley to his conclusion, in mhich I have always concurred. Field agrees with Langley that the first requisite for perfect hardening is complete solution of the carbon, not combination; and all of the facts agree with this conclusion. The fact that increase of hardness causes reduction of density was first brought to my notice some 40 years ago, when Major William Wade was testing Jones & Laughlin's cold-rolled iron, and I mas his assistant. We found the well-known increase of tenacity, compressive strength, torsional resistance, and hardness. Specific-gravity tests showed that the cold-rolled iron was less dense than the hot-rolled bars. The attention of travellers, upon the desert bordering the Great Colorado of the West, is often arrested by broad stretches of pebble-covered plains, or mesas, glittering in the sunlight from the myriads of polished surfaces, giving, at a distance, the appearance of a sheet of water. It is not alone the well-rounded, polished surface of these pebbles which commands attention, but, in addition, their nearly black or darkbrown color; and, above all, their uniform distribution in a level sheet, covering the plain in a continuous layer or pavement like a vast mosaic without sand or soil. Hundreds of square miles along the lower Colorado, especially in Yuma county, Arizona, and on the borders of the Colorado Desert in California, are thus covered. It is evident that the former cxtent of such pebbly plains was much greater than now, for the continuity of the mesa is broken into by the numerous dry arroyos or " washes " formed during exceptional showers or deluging rains. In some places there is an underlying bed of pebbly conglomerate, a mixture of pebbles and sand; in others the pebbles rest on a sandy, earthy foundation. The rounded pebbles are distinctly alluvial in origin, and pertain to the ancient Colorado drainage system; but it is not comprehensible that such regular layers of polished pebbles could have been left by subsiding floods or river action. Attention was early directed by me to these remarkable plains, first examined in 1853, when exploring for the United States and seeking a practicable route for a railway to the Pacific coast.* The cut and polished surface of the pebbles

Editors of engineering periodicals usually read the advertising pages. It may be hard' for some men, let alone engineers, to understand what value there is in reading "dry advertisements." Yet it is a fact that valuable suggestions have been obtained from these so-called "dry advertisements" which have been the means of securing greater efficiency in the performance of some undertaking and consequent saving of time and money. It seems to be an editorial practice to look to the advertisements for suggestions for the reading pages. It is a fact that some of the most appreciated descriptive articles were suggested by advertisements. Every undertaking is limited to that point where tools and machinery for its successful performance and completion may be purchased or manufactured. No work can he planned without having in mind such limitation, and the technical journals may be relied upon to furnish descriptions, both editorially and through the advertising pages, of methods and plant used in successfully performing various tasks. This being so, why should not the reader or subscriber to a magazine or periodical avail himself of such a fountain of knowledge? Such perusal proves of value to the up-to-date engineer or man occupying a -position. of responsibility where initiative is essential. Authorities agree that advertisements are on a par with technical articles for their educational value, and this Is as it should be. Also, most subscribers to a publication realize that a, successful advertising medium means a continuance of advertising patronage, which in turn enables the publisher to turn out a better and larger volume of reading matter.
