Although the problem of well spacing is one of the most important involved in the production of oil, it must be considered at the present time as still subject to further development. The published literature on this question is so voluminous that we cannot enter here into a review of it, except to refer to the recent papers by L. L. Foleyl and E. A. Stephen-son,2 where other references are cited. However, a decisive and conclusive answer to the problem of well spacing in any general form does not seem to have been developed. And while we shall be unable to present the desired solution in the present paper, it is nevertheless felt that the material to be given here not only provides the physical ground work for the ultimate solution, but shows qualitatively the essential factors that enter the well-spacing problem. Field studies of the well-spacing problem, in which the ultimate recoveries from different fields with different well spacings have been compared, have generally suffered from the lack of knowledge as to the similarity of the inherent characteristics of the producing reservoirs being compared, such as the sand volumes, the sand porosities, the sand permeabilities, the original reservoir pressures, the presence or absence of gas caps, the presence or absence of effective water drives, and the economic limits of production rates at which the various fields were considered to have yielded their ultimate recoveries. Certainly no one who is evaluating originally the economic significance of any oil reservoir would deliberately ignore these phases of the problem. And it is equally certain that no one would reasonably expect the ultimate recoveries from two reservoirs, even with the same well spacing, to be identical regardless of these other factors. More reliable results might be expected from comparisons of the recoveries obtained from different leases with different well spacings, but producing from the same reservoir sand. Unfortunately, however, even conclusions for such studies may be subject to serious errors. The reason simply is that however much one may insist that an operator is entitled only to the oil immediately underneath his surface acreage he will nevertheless drain the surrounding properties as long as his reservoir

Pyrite has been subjected to xanthate adsorption experiments in order to determine the nature of adsorption. The identification of adsorbed species by means of IR spectroscopy, as well as UV, shows that the dixanthogen adsorption is undoubtedly predominant on pyrite surface. The rest potential measured in a xanthate solution coincides with the redox potential of the xanthate-dixanthogen couple. Considering all the factors together, the adsorption mechanism of dixanthogen on pyrite has been proposed as This mechanism is consistent with the "passive" character of pyrite. From the measurement of the redox potential of the xanthate-dixanthogen couple in the homologous series, a rule similar to that for surface tensions proposed by Traube is also applicable. The polarization experiments were conducted on pyrite in a solution containing xanthate. In the anodic polarization, xanthate is observed to oxidize to dix- anthogen, which depresses oxygen evolution on py rite at higher potential levels. In spite of the importance of the presence of pyrite in the flotation of sulfide minerals, not many studies have been made on the xanthate-pyrite system in the absence of an activator or a depressant. In an early study by Gaudin and Wilkinson,' it was pointed out that no ferric xanthate was formed on a pyrite surface, while in another study Gaudin and his collaborators2 proved the formation of a very small amount of ferric xanthate. Afterwards, Gaudin et al.3 studied the pyrite-xanthate system with a radiometric technique and found indications of the presence of adsorbed dixanthogen on pyrite surfaces. Mamiya4 studied the flotation behavior of the pyrite-xanthate system and also suggested the possibility of dixanthogen. Recently, Fuerstenau and his coworkers at The Colorado School of Mines5 studied the role of dixanthogen in the xanthate flotation of pyrite and discussed the problem in terms of such properties as oxidation potential, zeta potential, flotation recovery, pH of solution, etc. However, the mechanism of dixanthogen adsorption at the pyrite-water interface is not yet understood. LAST year this Institute was good enough to accept some remarks by the writer regarding sound steel, entitled Plant for Hadfield Method of Producing Sound Steel Ingots, being a continuation of a research in which for some time the writer has been engaged, and full particulars of which were submitted in papers entitled A New Method of Revealing Segregation in Steel Ingots, and Method of Producing Sound Ingots, read before the Iron and Steel Institute in October, 1912. These papers gave rise to a very interesting discussion, both in England and America. This question is one of vital importance, as unless sound steel in the form of ingots is first obtained, sound steel in the finished forms of rail billets, rails, bars, sheets, and other forms cannot be expected. The working stresses demanded by modern conditions are so great, each year they probably approach nearer to the limit of safety, that without doubt those who produce steel will be compelled to pay the attention which this subject deserves. Moreover, the problem is not an insuperable one, as shown by the writer in the papers above referred to. In view of the information which has already been presented in these papers, it is not now necessary to go into details of the system advocated by the writer, except to repeat that the ingots and steel now referred to were produced by employing in the first place sound fluid steel, free from blowholes, this being poured into ordinary ingot molds, provided with the necessary feeding heads, the insulating slag medium, also charcoal and air blast or other suitable form of applying heat to the head portion of the ingot. Tile upper or head portion of the ingot is kept fluid by the intense heat generated by the air blast and charcoal, so that such fluid steel passes into the body of the ingot below the head, thus feeding and avoiding the shrinkage or piping which would otherwise occur. The result is the production of a sound steel ingot, free from blowholes, segregation and piping, and in which the waste portion, usually termed the discard, is but little over 7 or 8 per cent.

Instantaneous outbursts of gas in underground workings are similar in effect to great blasts of explosives, but without heat effects. Fortunately they occur only in a few localities in exceptional coal fields of the world and under exceptional geologic conditions. Such violent outbursts should not be compared with the ordinary outflows of gas into coal mines or with explosions of gas and dust. The phenomenon is essentially one of gas held in circumscribed areas under very high pressure and as a mining face or heading approaches such a place and the mining excavation sufficiently weakens the natural surrounding dam or shell, this is burst by the pressure just as by the discharge of a mass of explosives. The outbursts, so far as known to the writer, have been confined to coal beds and have not occurred in other mineral deposits. Hence, as discussed later, he believes that it is the relation of the gases to the coal material that is a factor in conjunction with others in producing conditions which permit the phenomena to occur when mining is done. The gases in most instantaneous outbursts have been hydrocarbon gases but in two coal fields they have been definitely found to be chiefly or wholly carbon dioxide. One of these localities in which CO2 outbursts have been frequent and have caused loss of life is in the southern part of the Gard basin, near Alais, in southern France. In 1919, the writer visited the Fontaine mine in this field the day following the occurrence of an outburst by which two men were smothered by carbon dioxide and fine dust. After 24 hr. the CO2 had not been entirely removed by the ventilating current. Occasional outbursts of CO2 have also occurred in other small basins in France, causing accidents, as in Puy-de-Dome. However, mines in the Gard basin, north of those in which CO2 outbursts have occurred, have experienced hydrocarbon gas outbursts. In the Lower Silesian coal field, Germany, there is a group of mines which have been subject to many instantaneous CO2 outbursts, some causing serious accidents, but the greatest disaster occurred recently

This paper describes the sources of funds required by the petroleum industry to finance capital expenditures and also presents a discussion of the effect of rising construction costs on these expenditures. The petroleum industry obtains its capital funds from several sources: (I) internal, from retained cash earnings; and (2) external, from borrowings and the sale of securities to the public. The upward trend of capital expenditures of the petroleum industry is caused in the main by the influence of two powerful factors: (I) the physical growth in the demand for oils; and (2) the rising cost of drilling wells and constructing refineries, pipe lines, and other facilities. The segregation of these factors is accomplished by deflating the actual capital expenditures so that they are shown in terms of 1939 costs and then subtracting the adjusted series from the actual figures to yield a set of data representing the expenditures made on account of higher costs. Rising costs affect prices and the portion attributable to this factor had to be generated from the cash earnings of the industry, which called for higher oil prices. Introduction Capital may be defined as "wealth employed in or available for production." All production requires capital. Expanding industries require more capital than static ones, and technological industries employ more capital than. those in which little equipment is needed. The petroleum industry is both rapidly growing and highly technological, and, being a large industry, its capital requirements are prodigious, amounting to about one-seventh of the total of all American business, excluding agriculture.* Capital formation may be defined as the method by which the wealth or capital needed in the productive processes is created. There are various ways in which capital funds may be obtained but there is only one way in which capital can be created—out of production in excess of consumption, that is, savings. The physical realities are simple, but the monetary concepts are complicated because the mechanism of credit can draw upon future savings. Introduction Grinding circuits are used to reduce the particle size of ores to the size desired for beneficiation or to grind a concentrate to a size required for final marketing. Grinding and classification can be carried out using either wet or dry circuits. Most sulfide ores are ground in wet circuits using one or more stages of grinding to obtain the necessary mineral liberation to produce a final concentrate which will meet the desired criteria. Iron ores are ground in circuits applicable to the particular ore using either wet or dry grinding. Nonmetallic minerals frequently present different requirements. Barite is likely to be subjected to wet grinding before beneficiating the ore; the concentrate is dried and then dry ground to meet market particle size requirements. The one thing that most mill operators will agree to is that there is no such thing as the "best" configuration of equipment for grinding. The circuit which works well on one ore may be totally unsatisfactory for another ore body. The general trend in the industry is flow sheet simplication with fewer parallel circuits instead of multiple-line circuits using small mills. This change in philosophy has been brought about by the saving of both capital and operating costs that may be possible with larger equipment. Remember that comminution is basically a very inefficient process, and that the costs can range upwards to 50% of the total milling costs. It, therefore, behooves the mill operator to carefully design his grinding and classification circuits. He must ascertain the optimal economic particle size for beneficiation and then make certain he has achieved the best balance between capital and operating costs to achieve the desired mesh of grind. Equipment Grinding circuits consist of one or more pieces of equipment to grind the solids. Generally, these circuits include one or more grinding mills, classification equipment, and the necessary materials handling equipment such as pumps, pipelines, and conveyors. There are many different types of equipment available which are used to grind and classify ores and minerals. Following is a tabulation of most of the equipment used for wet and/or dry grinding.

During the year 1934, Kentucky oil and gas operators have partly overcome their past depression fears and in the oil industry, with possibly more abandonments of old oil producers than the completion of new oil wells, produced 4,814,904 bbl. of oil in 1934 against 4,501,511 bbl. in 1933. In the gas industry of eastern Kentucky, 115 gas wells were completed during 1934. This production is delivered through two 20-in., one 16-in., one 12-in., one 10-in., and two 8-in. pipe lines to supply both domestic and industrial markets in Cincinnati, Ohio; Louisville, Lexington, Frankfort, Winchester, Ashland, Covington and other Kentucky towns; Washington, D.C., and other eastern cities. The largest percentage of these gas wells and production are from the Devonian black shale area of Floyd, Pike, Knott, Martin and Magoffin counties, Kentucky. In this area the largest percentage of 1889 wells, developing 421,-215 acres, has been completed in the past 10 years, of which 55.3 per cent produce from the 400 to 550 ft. of Carbonaceous Devonian black shales. The successful results obtained from these Devonian shales are due to the physical effects of the 5000 to 6000 lb. of gelatinated nitroglycerin with which the entire 400 to 550 ft. of shale is shot. A very small number of the shale wells are natural producers and do not require shooting. Other than the Devonian shale gas production, the remaining 44.5 per cent of the gas in this field is encountered throughout the entire strati-graphic section above this horizon; namely, salt sands of Pennsylvanian age and Maxon, Big Lime and Weir of Mississippian Age. A very small percentage is encountered in the Corniferous Devonian lime and the Silurian Big 6 below the black shales. In western Kentucky, in the counties of Henderson, Webster, Hopkins, McLean, Christian, Muhlenburg, Ohio, Daviess, Hancock, Brecken-ridge, Hart, Barren and Warren, many gas wells have been completed, but, because of insufficient market, activity has been somewhat desultory. The area is served by the pipe lilies of the Kentucky Natural Gas Corporation, with headquarters at Owensboro. The earliest mention of the sulphur deposits in what is now Culberson County, Texas, seems to be contained in " Explorations and Surveys for a Railroad Route from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean, United States War Department, 1853-54." Captain John Pope (he was not commissioned Captain until 1856) had charge of one of the divisions of the Survey. In his report on the geology of the route, William P. Blake noted the analysis of a greenish earthy powder from the bed of Delaware Creek, at the springs, which contained 18.28 per cent. of free sulphur. The report states: "From the chemical examination of the waters of the spring, by Dr. Booth, it appears that chloride of sodium is the principal solid ingredient, but considerable quantities of sulphide of sodium are present. ***** The waters from the springs examined by Dr. Booth were alkaline, but it is possible that some of the springs are acid; and in this case the precipitation of sulphur would ensue on the mixture of the acid waters with those charged with alkaline sulphurets and the origin of the deposits of sulphur would be thus explained." This is the first reference to the existence of sulphur in that region, the first mention of the character of the water found there and the first suggestion as to the origin of the deposits. The possibility of the existence of acid waters was confirmed by E. M. Skeats, nearly 50 years later.' In this publication, Skeats says that the water from the sulphur deposits in Section 11, Block 114, Township 6, contains 79.08 grains of free sillphuric acid per gallon. This locality is about 13 miles (21 km.) south . of Delaware Creek and about 35 miles (56 km.) east of the Delaware Springs. The next published reference to the existence of sulphur in Trans-Pecos. Texas is in the Pirst Annual Report of the Geological Survey of Texas, 1889, page 226, where W. H. von Streeruwitz mentions that sulphur is found in that region, but gives no further information. IN discussing the art of the goldsmith, it is apparent that it is an art requiring skill. He who wishes to be acclaimed a good master therein must be a good universal master in several arts, for the different kinds of work that come to his hands to be done are infinite. Those who work in gold and silver must outdistance all other craftsmen in learning and achievement to the same degree that their materials outdistance other metals in nobility. Therefore, it is necessary first of all to be a good designer, because design is the key that opens the doors not only to the goldsmith's craft but to all others. Then it is necessary that he understand melting and that he know well how to work with a hammer and how to use flat gravers and burins in engraving, as well as files and chisels. He must also possess certain secrets that are needful to the art, which in truth are parts of alchemy, such as softening gold when it is brittle and raw, coloring it when it has little color, soldering, enameling, working in niello, blanching, gilding, and an infinite number of things which must all be known in detail. But above all he who wishes to do this art well must be very patient in working, must know how to mould and how to proceed with the melt and with the file, hammer, chisel, or other implements for bringing his gold or silver work to the final state which he plans. He must also have good judgment in gems and know well how to recognize every [134v] good or defective quality they possess, and to distinguish the false gem from the true, either when set or when unmounted, as there is need; also how to value them both in buying or selling and in satisfying others who seek his appraisal. An etching technique.has been used to investigate the dislocation structure of deformed @-brass single crystals. Isolated single ended pileups have been observed, and it is shown that, in certain cases, the configurations of such pileups agree with theoretical predictions. Many discrete pileups within heavily deformed regions have also been detected and the influence of surrounding dislocations on these groups are reported and discussed. Divergences between the experimental and theoretical spacings in the isolated pileups and the origin of the stress maintaining the pileups are discussed. THE spatial configuration of a linear array of identical dislocations has been evaluated theoretically by Eshelby, Frank, and Nabarro.' Of particular interest is the equilibrium spacing of a series of dislocations under a uniform shear sti-ess when the leading dislocation is held fixed in the lattice; such an array is termed a single ended pileup. Eshelby, Frank, and Nabarro' found that an explicit analytical solution to the problem of n dislocations in a pileup is not possible, but they were able to derive approximate formulae applicable under various limiting conditions. An alternative method of determining the equilibrium configuration was proposed by Leibfried and Leibfried and Haasen in which the discrete dislocations are replaced by a continuous dislocation density. This technique was used by Head and Louat to solve in first approximation, a number of problems of particular interest, eg., single and double ended pileups. Head has also solved numerically a number of specific configurations involving up to six dislocations. Recently Kuhlmann-Wilsdorf has obtained numerical solutions for single-ended pileups containing between three and seventy dislocations, thus making possible a comparison between appropriate experimental results and accurate theoretical values. The considerable use of the pileup concept in theories of plastic flow has stimulated a number of attempts to observe such arrays experimentally. There is of course considerable intrinsic value in revealing an isolated pileup because a direct check on the elastic theory of dislocations then becomes possible. The only technique generally applicable for studying pileups in bulk metal specimens is selective etching of the point of emergence of individual dislocations. DURING part of the year 1932, conditions at the plant of the Inland Steel Co. made possible the collection of data on two of the variables of blast-furnace operation, between which we observed an interesting correlation. The variation in percentage of coke ash in the coke seemed to be reflected in the variations in percentage of silicon and sulfur present in the iron. This subject is of particular interest during this period of low production because of its effect on quality and cost of pig iron. The consumers of pig iron are now more exacting in their requirements. Formerly 0.050 per cent sulfur was considered satisfactory; now many foundries and steel plants insist on iron under 0.030 per cent sulfur and expect it to average 0.025 per cent sulfur. To attempt to produce iron so low in sulfur and still have reasonably good furnace operation means that everything possible must be done to minimize all variations. This subject is also directly connected with the cost of producing iron. A blast furnace operates most economically and efficiently in rather narrow limits and so any variable that has range enough to disturb regular operation must be moderated. The importance of regularity is accepted and the methods followed to eliminate variations in materials such as coke and iron ore are recognized as indispensable. Uniformity of Ore and Variations in Coke Ash The delivering of uniform cargoes of well mixed ore to the blast furnace involves much handling and expense, but it is accepted that the trouble and expenditure are justified. After the ore reaches the dock, further mixing is assured by spreading ore in thin layers, preventing segregation by keeping piles level, variations in digging, and the use of several bins for one ore. And finally, the fact that the furnace burden generally contains three or more ores, together with several miscellaneous materials, eliminates the possibility of ill effects due to variations in any one. Thus, much effort is made to insure a uniform ore. But a variation in the percentage of silicon in ore is less detrimental than a variation in the percentage of ash in coke. The former affects

ALTHOUGH the exclusion of foreigners and private owners from participation in the development of the. Russian oil fields prevents first-hand information being obtained, both official and private news indicate a growing appreciation of the value of the country's oil resources. Notwithstanding the suppression of that initiative and energy which only ambition can adequately stimulate, the industry is progressing and exports of products are assuming an importance that cannot be disregarded as an economic factor in the world's oil business. The following notes and observations must be regarded mainly as the views of one who has closely followed the fortunes of Russian oil, when considering the changes that have taken place in geological knowledge and oil-field technique, which have so profoundly modified oil-fields methods. Russia is fortunate in having retained the services of. a few scientists and technologists whose devotion to science has superseded their personal inclinations, and to these few men must be attributed the slow, but nevertheless striking, progress that has been made. The productive oil fields of Russia are centered around the Caspian Sea which, with its connected river system, constitutes such an ideal means of internal distribution for products. From the group of oilfields of which the. city of Baku forms a center, oil is pumped to Black-town, a suburb of Baku, where all the refineries are situated. The next important group of oil fields is located in the Terek district near Grosny, where refineries are erected and the products are piped or carried by tank cars to Petrovsk for the internal Russian market, or sent to the Black Sea by rail. A third oil field is spread over the province of Uralsk, north of the Caspian, Sea, the main port of outlet being Gourief, at the mouth of the River Ural. In Trans-Caspia there are two oil-field centers, one near Krasnovodsk on Chelekan Island, and one in Central Asia at Ferghana. The product of the former fields is transported to Baku for treatment, while the output of the Turkestan field is refined and consumed locally, mainly by the railway.

The surface-diffusion coefficient for , has been measured on (111) and (100) surfaces of copper from 1000" to 620°C. D,(Ge) on the (111) is two to three times that on the (100) as was found earlier for copper and gold on copper. D, (Ge) on both (111) and (100) is about thirty times that found for gold or copper tracers on the same surfaces, while in the temperature range where both D,(Ge) and Ds(Au) have been measured the activation energy for germanium is the same as that for gold. The apparent activation energy for Ds(Ge) is not a constant, but decreases with temperature. In a recent paper we reported on the application of a new tracer technique to the determination of the surface-diffusion coefficient (D,) for gold and copper on (111) and (100) surfaces of copper.' In this paper, we shall give the results obtained when the same technique was used to measure Ds for germanium on the (111) and (100) surfaces of copper. In addition to providing data on D., for an additional element on copper, the longer half-life of germanium (275 days) meant that Ds could be measured down to a much lower temperature and thus over a much wider temperature range (1000" to 620°C) than was used in our gold-tracer work (1060" to 780°C) or copper mass-transport studies (1060" to 800). The apparent activation energy for D, (Ge) is essentially the same as that found for gold or copper in the same temperature range, though the values of D, (Ge) are thirty times greater than those found for gold or copper tracers. The most interesting new result found is that the apparent activation energy for Ds(Ge), and thus Do, definitely increases with temperature. Such a trend was much more apparent in Gjostein's mass-transport work on copper than in our own, though in an earlier paper we mentioned the difficulty of fitting all of our points with one straight line:= No real explanation of this is given though experiments done on grain boundary groove growth at various ambient pressures demonstrate unequivocally that vapor transport plays no part in the increase in activation energy with temperature.

It is perhaps a little difficult for Americans fully to appreciate the slow progress in the search for oil in Australia. Conditions are so different from those in the United States that methods must also differ considerably. Australia possesses an area almost exactly equal to that of the United States, but has a population of less than 7,000,000, and this population is concentrated almost entirely around the eastern and southern coasts of the continent. There are, therefore, vast "empty spaces" entirely unpopulated or exceedingly sparsely populated. The emptiness is due not to any lack of energy or initiative on the part of Australians but to the arid and waterless character of much of the country's interior. Throughout the greater part of the area that is comparable with the Mississippi drainage area of the United States, there is not a single flowing stream, and over most of it the rainfall is less than 7 in. a year. This hinders exploration and geological survey, and also isolates from potential markets many of the regions that otherwise might be considered worth prospecting. Also, Australia consists of six independent and sovereign states. With the establishment in 1901 of the Commonwealth of Australia, the states retained complete control of lands and mineral rights. Each state has its own petroleum legislation, and the absence of a central controlling authority has tended to confusion and to the introduction of many complications in oil prospecting. There are three major "territories," administered by the Federal Government; namely, the Northern Territory, enclosed between the northern parts of Queensland and Western Australia, within Australia itself, and the Territories of Papua and New Guinea in the island of New Guinea. Land and mineral legislation in these territories is not uniform. Furthermore, during the late twenties there occurred an orgy of company flotation and indiscriminate drilling, wQch resulted in the discovery of some definite indications of oil in three of the states and two of the territories, but which failed to develop any producing oil field in the common acceptation of the term. The Mother Lode district in California is probably better known as the land of Bret Harte and Mark Twain than as a gold-producing district, although in this respect it holds an important place. The history of quartz mining on the Mother Lode dates back to the '50s, when, after the first fever of the gold rush, men began to look for something more permanent, if not more lucrative, than the placers. Since that time, the discoveries, shutdowns, and reopenings of the many mines, together with the varying fortunes of their numerous operators, constitute an interesting chapter in California history, but one too long to include in a description of mining methods. The district is well situated, so far as physical conditions are concerned. The Mother Lode extends along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, about half way between the crest and the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys, the country traversed consisting of low rolling hills—typical foot-hills. The elevation varies from 1000 to 1800 ft. and the climate is most desirable. There is an abundance of water, timber is easily obtained from the higher foot-hills a few miles east, and cheap hydro-electric power is generated practically on the Lode. These natural conditions are conducive to low costs in mining and have been the deciding factor in allowing profitable exploitation of the comparatively low-grade orebodies. Transportation facilities are not bad. Five branch railroads, from the main trunk lines in the valley, tap the district at intervals of from 10 to 30 miles, and the roads connecting these are fairly good for trucking purposes. Labor is made up of several nationalities, the principal ones being American, Spanish, Jugo-Slav, Italian, and Mexican. There were few Mexicans on the Lode prior to 1919, but the shortage of labor, experienced generally by the mining camps of the country in the years following the war, made necessary the hiring of some. The percentage of Mexican labor rapidly increased in 1920 and for a year or so thereafter, but it has now diminished until at most of the mines only a few Mexicans are working. Of the different nationalities, Americans are the most efficient and Mexicans the least.

this paper presents the results of a study of the slip velocity of gases rising through liquids in vertical tubes, inclined tubes, and vertical annuli. The data were obtained in gas-liquid systems which included combinations of air, propane and natural gas (over 97 per cent methane) with water, lubricating oils, and crude oils. The 214 data points obtained in this study along with 11 data points reported in the literature are incorporated in an empirical correlation which relates the mean slip velocity of gases flowing through liquids with the parameters gas rate, tube size, ratio of liquid viscosity to liquid density, gas density, liquid density, and the angle of the tube from the vertical. The average numerical deviation of the measured slip velocity data from values obtained from the correlation is 9.2 per cent. The average algebraic deviation between measured and Predicted data is 0.31 per cent, an indication that the correlation is a satisfactory representation of the data. The correlation presented in this paper will be useful primarily in the design of subsurface gas-oil separation equipment for increasing the efficiency of oil-well pumping installations. but may perhaps be extended to other situations of gases rising through liquid columns. INTRODUCTION The production of oil by pumping is often complicated by the presence of free and dissolved gas in the oil at bottom-hole conditions. This gas can be drawn into the pump barrel and result in "vapor locking" the pump, thus reducing the efficiency of the pumping operation. Large amounts of free gas may be excluded from the pump by the use of a gas-anchor, which is designed to allow the separation of free gas from the oil before it is drawn into the pump. The design of a suitable gas-anchor depends on a knowledge of the difference between the velocity of the free gas and that of the oil as the oil travels down toward the pump intake. THE principles of the caving system, as they apply to mining of soft iron-ore deposits, are well known, as this method has been in use for many years. It is, however, necessary to give a general description of it before describing the Athens method. The shaft and surface equipment should be placed at a sufficient distance from the orebody, so that the caving and pulling of the surface will not disturb the operations of the mine. Levels are started at the proper intervals, and when raises are completed, slicing commences at the top of the orebody and progresses downward. The necessary precautions are taken to avoid the occurrence of large open rooms and it is customary to break sufficient capping to form a mat to prevent heavy falls of ground from crushing through to the lower sublevels and endangering the lives of the workmen. Slicing is continued, and when sufficient width and length are undercut, the capping commences to cave, and in time a settlement occurs at the surface. As soon as this caving commences, the pressure on the timber naturally increases; after it extends to the surface, the amount of pressure has a certain relation to the depth. In other words, the pressure increases with the depth, but not in direct proportion. At great depths, such as that found at the Athens, 2500 ft. (760 m.), the pressure might be so excessive that the cost of keeping working places open would be prohibitive. The actual caving of the surface in a deep mine, with a great thickness of capping, is slow and often takes years to accomplish. After sufficient width and depth -have been undercut, the capping starts to break away, but through arching large masses of rock-.fill the opening, support the capping, and retard the continuation of caving. Caving to the surface is, therefore, retarded until either a sufficient thickness of the orebody is removed, or the width and length of the undercut part have been greatly increased. I wish to emphasize this fact of slow caving, for it is on, this principle that the success of the Athens system. largely depends.

IF ASKED whether limestone production was a mining problem I would; not hesitate to answer emphatically in the affirmative. The question, "When is a quarry a mine?" is familiar. The immediate mental picture induced by the thought of limestone production is that of an open quarry. All are familiar with the open pit in the iron-producing districts of Minnesota and Michigan and the open cuts of the so-called "porphyry" coppers of the West. If these are mines, they differ little from limestone quarries in general mode of operation; if quarries, why do they need the attention of mining engineers? During 1923, the United States produced in round numbers 70,000,000, tons of ore. The limestone production of the United States for the same period was something over 100,000,000 tons. In tons, it about equals the oil production of the United States. The uses of limestone are legion. A paper read by a prominent engineer of Chicago, at the meeting of the National. Crushed Stone Association held last February in St. Louis says: "There is no industry in the United States today that is more basic in its operation or by itself controls. more industries. There is hardly a chemical operation, hardly a metallurgical operation or building operation that a crushed-stone man does not control if he will jump in and make the full utilization of it." Some of the many uses are for road metal, concrete, railway ballast, building stone, riprap, and rubble, the manufacture of iron and steel, alkalies, calcium carbide, magnesia, carbolic and carbonic acids, asphalt filler, mineral wool, poultry grit, sulfuric acid, phosphates, nitrates, soap, baking powder, the purification of copper and prevention of coal-mine explosions, to say nothing of the quantities used in the making of lime and cement. It has been said that without iron we would revert to the Stone Age; how much iron would we have without limestone? From the point. of view of the mining engineer, using the term in its broad sense to include geologists and metallurgists, the production of limestone is important because of its occurrence, volume, commercial importance, and the problems presented by its recovery and treatment.

Illinois supplies coal to seven states in the Upper Mississippi Valley —Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and portions of the Dakotas, Nebraska and Kansas. In this same area are marketed large quantities of coal from West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and elsewhere; fuel oil from the crude petroleum supplies of the Mid-Continent fields, and natural gas from Louisiana, Kansas and the Texas Panhandle. The boundaries of this "Illinois coal-market area" are determined by competition from other coal fields and from other forms of fuel. Within the area so described 90 per cent of Illinois coal is marketed. Thus in the Southwest, an abundance of fuel-oil supplies and natural gas dominates the market almost to the exclusion of coal. The westward movement of Illinois coal in Kansas, Nebraska and the Dakotas is met by an eastward flow of high-grade coals from Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. In the lake-shore counties of Minnesota and Wisconsin, the market is dominated by Appalachian coals, cheaply carried over the Great Lakes and reaching the ports of Lake Michigan and at the head of Lake Superior. Illinois coals find their largest market in the southern and western sections of these two lake states. Only small quantities of Illinois coals are shipped east of the state line. This market area is occupied entirely by the neighboring coal fields of Indiana and the Appalachian coal fields in Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. Illinois Coal-makket Area , With these factors in mind, the map of the Illinois coal-market area may be drawn. Within this boundary is the area that is logically and economically served by Illinois coal. However, this area is by no means exclusively dependent upon coal from Illinois mines. The preponderance. of Appalachian coal in Wisconsin and Minnesota has been mentioned. Appalachian coal, also, moves in large tonnages into Illinois itself, particularly the Chicago district. The Iowa and Missouri local coals share the market with imported coal from Illinois; throughout the market area, fuel oil and natural gas are important factors in the total energy supply.
