I AM well aware that this subject is not strictly in the line of mining engineering, yet as it is a subject with which mining engineers at times have something to do, I have thought, perhaps, it might not be wholly out of place to communicate to the Institute something of the method used in determining deflection, and of its final issue. Having felt a need of some simple formula for determining the deflection of girders of uniform cross-section under any load, I have been led through the counsel of Mr. Frederick J. Slade, to whom I am indebted for many suggestions, to undertake a labor of which I shall in this paper give only some of the most important features. The results arrived at agree with those obtainable from the received formula; of Weisbach, Rankine, and others, but the expressions given by these authors, and by all others that I have at hand, are of such a form that they are not easily applied by those whose higher mathematics have become rusty from disuse, and they require, moreover, too much labor in their application to be of practical value. The general formula that I have adopted is similar to that given by Rankine, and is deflection = [mWl3 -El], in which l is the span, W the total load, E the modulus of elasticity, I the moment of inertia of the uniform cross-section of the girder, and m a factor depending for its value on the mode of distribution of the load. The problem then is to find the value of this factor m in the formula, and for some distributions of the load it leads to a number of mathematical difficulties. The housing of labor and sanitation at mines in India are difficult problems to solve because-no more than two or three castes will accept the same conditions, and conditions suitable to one coal-field are not applicable to other fields. It is also necessary to consider the financial standing of the different companies. The European companies, which pay 30 per cent. and more dividends, can erect more suitable houses than the Indian companies, which are just able to keep their heads above water. The Santhal will not live in a bucca-roofed house as a permanent dwelling, and both the Santhal and Koras have an aversion to living in a line of attached huts. They have forsaken a whole, line of houses in one of which a case of sickness or death has occurred, and those houses were afterward considered unfit by all other classes of natives. The Santhals, Koras, and Douri castes will not take drinking water from a stand pipe; wells must be furnished. When well water is not available, these people will take water from the nearest pool or tank regardless of whether or not the water is stagnant. The well tops should not he completely enclosed, nor should there be a drain around the top. The ground should slope away from the well. In the Girieih coal fields, the miners have a great objection to pucca floors; they prefer earth which is lapped, easily cleaned, and renewed. As it is customary for the miner to build his own house, the company supplying the roofing material, he takes a special interest in it, keeps it in order, and hesitates to leave it. Each house is surrounded by its own bit of land, which the inmate cultivates.

My function here today is not to illuminate any particular subject but simply to welcome you to Penn State and to the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. Our college is, of course, dedicated to the same thing to which most of you have dedicated your lives--the exploration of the earth, the extraction of materials from it, and the production of useful things from those materials. We have about 2,000 students engaged in studying in preparation for service in these activities at the present time. Like other colleges of our type, we've undergone a great expansion just at a time when university budgets are contracting. This creates an interesting situation as to how we can best use our resources. This, of course, is the thing a lot of you are going to be talking about here--how we can best use the world's resources. As you well know, the expectations of the people of the world are rising, and, with the numbers of people increasing and with finite resources, there never was a time in history when it was more important that we become "quantitative" in our discovery, estimation, extraction, and utilization of those resources. I think it is admirable and very timely that you are gathered together to discuss your various approaches to this particu¬lar problem of quantifying and making most efficient use of the resources of the world. Yours is sort of a hidden profession, not just because you actually go underground, but because the public in general is not aware of where the materials they use come from. If you are successful in your professions the public will continue to be unaware. Only if you fail will your essential function become patently obvious. I wish you success both in your professional pursuits and in this particular meeting.

Discussion of the paper of W. J. SHARWOOD, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1671 to 1675. FREDERIC P. DEWEY, Washington, D. (communication to the Secretary*).-Even if the data given should be considered sufficient to support properly the empirical rule as stated, this rule would be of extremely limited application in miscellaneous assaying. Tile fixed conditions must include equality of gold and silver where mixed beads are concerned, owing to the wide variation in the specific gravity of gold and silver. Also, the fixed conditions must include the presence of the sane amounts of other base metals besides lead. Such an agreement is .often lacking even in the beads from two fusions of the salve ore. In practical work it is sufficiently general to be called universal that cupellation beads are not pure precious metal. An apparent loss in cupellation is an algebraic sum and in many cupellations the gains exceed the losses, especially with large beads where tile gains lie so completely in the judgment of the cupeller. For several years I have been engaged in an investigation into the conditions affecting the accuracy of gold-bullion assaying, and have just completed an examination of cupels which included the assaying of 10,000 used cupels. The grand result of the cupel work is an emphatic warning against drawing rigid conclusions regarding cupellation. It is so easy to say "If all other conditions remain the Same," but it is extremely difficult, and in practical work impossible, to maintain equal conditions. Cupel absorptions, which constitute such a large proportion of cupellation losses, and in many cases the only loss, may vary considerably in different parts of the same row of cupels, even in carefully regulated work.

The law of supply and demand is, in general terms, that law which governs the price of any commodity in an unrestricted competitive market. There are several variables which, for the purpose of this discussion, will be defined only as they apply to the petroleum industry: Production: The volume of petroleum that is moved from leases. Stocks: The volume of petroleum that is in the hands of the tank farm and pipeline companies. Inventory: The value of the stocks at the market. Consumption: The indicated delivery of oil to others than those who hold stocks. Demand: The potential absorbing power of the consuming market. Demand is the expression of the needs of the consumer and may depend on the economic value of the oil to the consumer. In times of low prices, the demand is the same as the consumption but during periods of high prices or deficiency in supply, the demand may be greater than consumption. A general expression of the law is as follows: production or consumption Some relation between stocks and or controls price or demand inventory The Law as Applied to Crude-oil Market The above general expression of the law shows that there are six relations between variables that must be investigated in any attempt to establish the exact status of price control at any time. Production vs. Consumption If stocks of crude oil were very low, so that the flow of oil to the market was directly from the producer to the consumer and not, in a large measure, through stocks, some relation between production and consumption would be proportional to price changes. The ore deposits at Firmeza have been worked continuously since 1884; those at Daiquiri since 1895. It is surprising, therefore, that they have not been the object of careful geologic study until quite recently. It is true that considerable attention was paid to these deposits by A. C. Spencer, in 1901, in the report on the geology of Cuba, by Hayes, Vaughan, and Spencer,l but this was only incidental to a hasty general reconnaissance of the Island. As far as the Daiquiri deposits are concerned, this gap has been filled by the appearance of the two papers by Prof. James F. Kemp2 and by Prof. Waldemar Lind-gren and Clyde P. Ross respectively.3 Max Roesler, first holder of the Emmons fellowship, made a detailed study of the Firmeza deposits during the past summer, so that soon we can expect a full description of them. Consequently, there is no, demand at the present time for a description of the deposits from other sources, and that is not the purpose of this paper. The papers on Daiquiri, however, leave unsolved problems in regard to the age of the rocks of the district and certain phases of the genesis of the deposits, and it is with the hope of aiding in the solution of some of these problems that this contribution is offered. Kemp, and Lindgren and Ross agree in assigning these deposits to the type of contact metamorphic deposits. They disagree in part on the question of their localization. The deposits occur in an extensive area of diorite which includes numerous blocks of limestone, and sometimes are found in the contact zones between these blocks and the diorite, and in other instances are completely enveloped in the diorite, showing no apparent connection with the limestone. JOHN H. NELSON, Worcester, Mass.-At our plant we have done considerable work on notch-bar testing and are farther at sea now than when we started. So far, we have been unable to get the notch-bar test to be consistent with any other known test. Lately, I have been investi-gating the effect of the position of the notch-bar specimen in a, bar. To do this I took a 3, ½ in. square bar and quartered it, then heat treated the four quarters. Each of these pieces was again quartered and a specimen machined and notched. "In this way we would have notch-bar tests from the exterior to the interior of the bar. These were made of such lengths that it was possible to make four impact tests on each speci-men. Extreme care was taken in marking the position of these test speci-mens in the original bar. The notches were then cut with relation to position of the specimen in the original bar. The second notch was cut 90° from the first, and so on around the specimen. In this way, we have found that, with a 3 ½ in. bar of 0.4 or 0.5. per cent. carbon steel when properly heat treated, we could get impact values ranging from 15 to 100 ft.-lb. Just why this is the case we are unable to state; but it does appear to be a fact that along the outside of the original bar the notch-bar test seems to be low and increases toward the center, but it is not always consistent. For instance, we may have, on a single specimen; one notch-bar test giving us 15 ft.-lb. and another 100 ft.-lb. We have not found such inconsistencies in alloy steels. Alloy steel is consistently good or consistently bad. If it. is good, you cannot readily destroy the impact value, no matter what you do; if it is bad-that is, if it is a poor notch-bar steel-and you have sufficient latitude in your draw, you may correct it. In other words, if the hardness you are working to will allow you to draw to about 1050° F.(561° C.) or over and then quench this steel from the draw heat, you. can raise the im-pact value of the steel from about 4 or 10 ft.-lb. up to-40-or 50 ft.-lb: Just what occurs I do not know. There is evidently a critical-point in steels that have poor impact value, in the neighborhood of 1000 F. to 1050° F. (536° to 561° C.).

THERE are, as I have heard, varying opinions among men experienced in minerals as to whether silver has its own mineral [i.e., occurs native] or not. Mineralogical reasons and the authority of the majority persuade me that it has, not only because I have seen the natural material separate but also because I know that in mines of gold, copper, lead, and other metals pieces of pure metal are found without admixture, and I have heard that pieces of silver, gold, and copper have been found that had been reduced to their ultimate purity by natural causes. This is also confirmed by a German, Georgius Agricola, who says* that in a mine in Saxony a piece of metallic silver was found so large that the Duke who was prince and patron of the place had a whole dining table of square German style made from it without its being enlarged or worked on by any human artifice except for the tripod legs, and he often boasted that in this he surpassed the greatness of the Emperor. In truth I have never seen any metal except copper that was brought out from the mine pure and without any mineral, but I think that such a thing is indeed possible, since I believe in the greatness and power of Nature, who strives toward no other goal than perfection and purity. Indeed most of the minerals that I have seen have not been without admixture, not only of their earth but also of other metals, and this is more true of that which I have heard called silver than of any of the others. I except the silver that is mined in Schio in the region of Vicenza. These doubts, therefore, are not born without some shadow of apparent reason. As I told you above I believe that silver may have and does have its own mineral, for every substance that is converted into metal can exist pure by itself in its own species, as it also exists separately even though it be mixed with others, since it is seen that in each ore its metal is generated in a single body. Therefore it happens many times that whoever speaks of the ore of silver in one breath, without distinction, speaks of that of all the other metals, because there are few ores that are not mixed. But because the most noble things always have the prerogative of including in their name that of the others, where there is gold or silver the ores are not called

Because of the attention that has recently been given to the health and safety of miners by various organizations such as the A.I.M.E., The American Congress, Mining Section, National Safety Council, as well as the Bureau of Mines and various state mining departments, your committee on health and safety deemed it best to call attention this year to the mine-accident cause that is by far the most important; namely, injuries due to falls of ground, rock, roof and coal. Each of several members of the committee contributed a brief outline of the importance of this accident cause in his district. While these papers were brief, it would require too much time and space to give them in full, therefore we present an outline of each and summation of all. Report of M. D. Cooper, Hillman Coal and Coke Co. M. D. Cooper, Division superintendent, Hillman Coal and Coke Co., Pittsburgh, Pa., contributed the following: During the period from 1930 to 1939, accidents from falls of roof in bituminous mines average 54.3 per cent of all accidents. In mechanized mining, there is a tendency toward reduction in this class of accidents because the operator of the machine is usually at a distance of 10 to 20 ft. from the face, whereas in hand load- ing the miner is close to the face during most of the shift. No doubt the use of aluminum and light steel beams supported at regular intervals by jacks, a common practice in mechanical mining, has contributed to the favorable record so far developed. Report of M. H. Fies, De Bardeleben Coal Corporation Milton H. Fies, Vice-President, DeBar-deleben Coal Corporation, Birmingham, Ala., says: With reference to the types of mining, it is suggested that a clear understanding be had as to the character and thickness of the directly overlying strata, with especial consideration to the strength and in some cases an analysis of it. In coal mining, generally speaking, overlying strata higher in silica than others is stronger. In changing from narrow to wide places, the procedure should be experimental, both as to the width and depth of places and as to the nature of the necessary timbering. Since most of the accidents in coal mining particularly are due to falls of roof and coal, this phase of mining should be attacked with vigor There is no substitute for discipline and, in this connection, under present conditions it is important that cooperation by the labor ornanizations- be sought and that a spirit of fairness prevail. Frequent and thorough inspection of all active working places should be made.

Approximately 5000 tons of zinc ore a day was mined during 1943 in the Mascot-Jefferson City district in East Tennessee. This ore came from the Kingsport formation, a part of the Knox dolomite, of Ordovician age. The Kings-port is composed of 350 to 400 ft. of limestone and dolomite. Thin cherts, sandy layers and shales are numerous. Frequently, the limestones are altered to crystalline dolomite. The Kingsport is divisible into four main lithologic zones. These divisions are illustrated in an accompanying table, which gives detailed sections of the ore-bearing beds as found in the mines and shows the exact positions of the various ore zones within the formation. Key beds are described and the practical applications of stratigraphy in mapping, prospecting and mining are discussed. Introduction The Mascot-Jefferson City zinc district is in Knox and Jefferson Counties, in the Great Valley of East Tennessee. It extends from Mascot, I3 miles northeast of Knoxville, to Jefferson City, about 30 miles northeast of that city. The American Zinc Company of Tennessee is producing from five mines in the district, in which it has operated for more than 30 years. The only other important producer is the Universal Exploration Co. The approximate daily production of the district in 1943 was 5000 tons of sulphide ore, grading from 2.5 to 6 per cent zinc. Small amounts of oxidized ore are mined intermittently. The Knox dolomite has been described by various geologists,'-' but no detailed descriptions of the rock sections revealed by mining have been published. Rock units are not conspicuously different and careful study is required to distinguish them. Nevertheless, familiarity with the stratigraphy of the mineralized zones is essential to successful exploration and extraction of the ores; therefore the purpose of this paper is to give detailed stratigraphic sections as measured in the mines, to discuss their important features and to show their relationship to the stratigraphy of the district. Generalized Section Table I gives the most characteristic general features of the major stratigraphic units. The formation names given in parenthesis are locally and widely used terms, the correlations of which are not necessarily established. For this reason they are put in quotation marks and are replaced by more restricted terms. The names "Mascot" and "Kingsport" were adopted from local towns. They were chosen jointly by Josiah Bridge, of the Federal Geological Survey, and the senior author for use in their separate unpublished manuscripts describing the Knox dolomite in East Tennessee. Descriptions of the type sections may soon be published. The name "Longview" was first applied by Butts6 in Alabama.

0. C. RALSTON, Salt Lake City, Utah.-I have merely glanced over this paper, consequently, I am hardly in a position to discuss it intelligently. There is one thing, however, that is of interest, that is, the claim that the oil mixture which they have chosen is the best adapted to the work at hand. I would like to ask Mr. Mathewson if they still feel that that is the case-if that really does give the best grade of concentration and the best extraction for the same money, compared to any particular oil mixture which they could get. E. P. MATHEWSON, Anaconda, Mont.-We are still using that mixture, and we consider it the most economical mixture used. DAVID COLE, El Paso, Texas.-I would like to ask Mr. Ralston if there are some other mixtures that would be better? E. P. MATHEWSON.-We are open to suggestions. 0. C. RALSTON.-My own paper on oils* calls attention to the fact that certain hardwood oils, especially the tars, are now being burned or wasted. A great deal of hardwood tar is available as low as 4 or 5 c. per gallon, that being its value as fuel under the boilers. As a matter of fact, a great deal of testing has been done with only the commercial products that are as a usual ride sold on the market. Very little hardwood tar is sold on the market. In asking a great many people who have tested flotation oils, I have not heard hardwood tar mentioned very often. I think I would add to that that the hardwood tars can probably be bought in quantity comparable with the sludge acid at Anaconda, and. should contain a greater proportion of the frothing constituent, and at a price fairly commensurate with what they pay for the sludge acid. E. P. MATHEWSON.-I would like to make a correction in one statement I made that there has been no change made in the mixture. This change has been made: We found that the amount of wood creosote in treating the sand from tables was extremely small, and we tried some experiments on a large scale, dropping it out and using simply the sludge acid and sulphuric acid. We found that this gave practically as good results as wood creosote. We use wood creosote in treating the slimes. We find it necessary in that operation. (San Franciso Meeting, September, 1915) I. INTRODUCTION THE Furbero oil field lies in the Gulf coastal plain of Mexico between the important ports of Tampico and Vera Cruz and about one-third of the distance between the two points from the latter (Lat. 20° 22' N., 97° 30' W. Gren.). It is in the State of Vera Cruz, about 14 miles west by south of the village of Papantla in the canton of the same name, and is the most southern of the developed oil fields of the Tampico-Tuxpam region being a distance of 50 miles south by east from the Potrero del Llano field and 42 miles in the sane direction from the Alamo field. The field has been developed by the Oil Fields of Mexico Co. and is in the midst of a large block of lands owned or leased by then. Communication is through the port of Tuxpam with which it is connected by a narrow-gauge railway and 6-in. pipe line some 52 miles in length. This field is of more than ordinary interest since it represents a type of oil deposit hitherto unknown. So far as I am aware, no other commercially valuable deposit of oil is known to occur under conditions of accumulation similar to those found here. The igneous nature of the so-called `sand' encountered in drilling was not recognized until a number of wells had been drilled; and it was not until recently. that the geological relations of the sill or laccolith, which gives rise to the accumulation of oil, were known and the so-called `anticline' was known to be, in part at least, the result of igneous intrusion. Geological surveys in this general region were made in 1900-1901 by W. H. Dalton and in 1907-1909 by P. C. A. Stewart, F. W. Moon, Leonard V. Dalton, and Dr. Max Muhlberg. More recent surveys have been made, however; under the direction of the author, by E. L. Ickes, B. C. Belt, B. Hartley, and Harve Loon-us. Notes of the earlier examinations were not available with the exception of the report by Dr. Muhlberg who apparently first recognized the true nature of the Furbero intrusion. The experiments of which the results and significance are set forth in this paper do not by any means cover the whole subject of the heat-treatment of the material referred to, yet they constitute a contribution to that general subject, rather than to the special department of' annealing. The material here considered is acid open-hearth steel, containing from 0.50 to 0.80 per cent. of carbon, with a nearly uniform percentage of other elements. The problem of stress corrosion has been discussed a great deal recently, but many factors have as yet not been clarified. There are many interpretations of the definition of the word, different corrosive media are used, and numerous methods of stressing are utilized. Some quarters believe that the inherent strength of the material under test is the determining factor of its resistance to stress corrosion, while others think that the natural corrosion resistance of the material is the determining factor. This paper is intended merely to set forth the limited experience we have had and to discuss some of the other stress-corrosion tests which have been made with light alloys.

THE occurrence of this gas, in quite appreciable. quantities, has been observed for many years in its escape along the creeks of Western Pennsylvania, and more recently, in much larger quantities, from the oil wells in and near Venango County. Within about five years several gas wells have been struck, from which the gas has escaped continuously in prodigious quantities and at great pressure. During the last year a systematic attempt has been made to utilize the flow of gas from one of these wells, and results have been reached which were quite unexpected. This well, near Leechburg, Armstrong County, is about twenty miles northeast of Pittsburgh, on one of the side tributaries of the Alleghany River. It had been drilled in search of oil to a depth of 1250 feet in 1871, but none was found. A great flow of gas was developed, however, accompanied by a slight spray of salt water, and this has continued with little or no diminution to the present time. The gas in its escape has been discharged through a 5-inch pipe, and at a pressure of from 60 to 80 lbs. per square inch, but no exact determinations, either of the pressure or quantity, have been made. The rolling mill of Messrs. Rogers & Burchfield is on the opposite side of the river, and it has been for some years devoted to the production of fine grades of sheet iron from charcoal pig metal, by puddling and in knobbling fires. The usual weekly product of the mill has been 30 tons of No. 30 tin plates, and 50 tons of No. 24 to 28 sheets. The well was bought by this firm for $1000, and the gas is led across the river, a distance of about 500 feet, through a 3-inch pipe. It is distributed through half-inch pipes, and at a pressure of about 45 lbs. per square inch, to several of the furnaces, but a large fraction of the total flow of gas is still wasted at the well. No essential alteration in any of the furnaces has been found necessary in the use of the gas fuel, except to brick up the fire-bridge and to put in the gas and air pipes. The old grate used for coal is loosely covered with bricks and cinder, so that a slight percolation of air may take place through them. The gas is admitted through a half-inch pipe, and blows toward the fire-bridge through 18 or 20 one-eighth inch jets. The air is blown in at about 2 lbs. a

WITH most cast metals the grain size may vary within wide limits, depending upon the conditions at the moment of freezing. These conditions are subject to control in magnesium-base alloys, by proper melting and superheating techniques, enabling production of quite uniform and fine-grained castings, almost independent of section thickness. However, such variations of grain size as do exist, in common with all metals, are reflected in corresponding changes in mechanical properties. It is the intent of this paper to present data giving the relationship between grain size and mechanical properties. Data are also included on the combined effects of grain size and microporosity. In addition, a short discussion of factors influencing the grain size of sand castings is included. MEASUREMENT OF GRAIN SIZE By grain size is meant the statistical distribution of volumes occupied by the individual crystallites in a metal section. Since this is almost always impossible of direct measurement, several methods of estimating and expressing the size have been evolved. Most exact methods make use of the microscope. This involves study of a single plane cut at random through the metal. What is seen in the microscope are polygons, each the cross section of a grain. The diameters or areas of these polygons are then measured and the grain size is expressed as an average diameter, number of grains per unit area, average area per grain, or, rarely, average volume per grain. Rutherford, Aborn, and Bain3 have discussed extensively the errors involved when using a plane section to estimate volume. They clearly point out that the tendency is to underestimate the true grain size because of the nature of the measurement. The A.S.T.M.. recommends that measurement be made by comparison with a standard chart, by means of Jeffries' planimetric method' or Heyn's intercept method. The Society recommends that the notation be in terms of the number of grains per unit area (as is the grain-size number used for steel) or as an average diameter, expressed in inches or millimeters (as for copper and brass). The method of measurement used for this study was comparison with a standard chart, which has been described by P. F. George.', The chart was constructed by photographing at i00 diameters a uniform specimen with an average grain diameter of 0.003 in. The average diameter of this specimen was determined by numerous measurements, using both the Jeffries and Heyn methods. The other grain sizes were then obtained by appropriate enlargement of the master sample. Careful comparison of the chart method with other methods on identical samples indicates that though the differences be-
