A method has been developed whereby one may calculate the productivity factors of producing formations from a knowledge of the reservoir conditions. Account is taken not only of the heterogeneous character of the gas-oil flow system but also of the detailed variations with pressure of the shrinkage and viscosity of the oil, the solubility of the gas in the oil, and even the variability of the gas viscosity and the deviation of the gas from ideal behavior. Curves are shown giving the results of numerical calculations on the production rate as a function of the pressure differential for a high-prcssure and a low-pressure system, three values of gas-oil ratio being treated in each case. Curves are also given showing the variation with distance from the well of the pressure, oil saturation, and permeability. The effect of connate water is briefly discussed in relation to the apparently large discrepancies between the calculated and observed productivity-factor values. Introduction The significance of the productivity factor as a measure of the capacity of an oil-bearing formation to produce is well recognized; for it is the composite and integrated resultant of the physical prop-crties of both the porous medium and the fluid stream passing through it with respect to the ease with which the particular petroleum fluids present in the formation can flow through it and into producing wells. The most direct method of determining the productivity factor of a well consists, as is well known, in the simultaneous measurement of reservoir-pressure differentials and rates of production and the expression of the data in terms of rate of flow per unit pressure drop.' Actual measurements carried out in this manner on producing wells have given factors that generally lie in the range of o to Ioo bbl. per day per pound pressure drop. This wide range arises not only from variations in permeability but also from the varying sand thickness of producing formations. One of the aims of developing a theory of the mechanics of oil production obviously is that of predicting what the productivity factor should be from a knowledge of the individual characteristics of the producing formation and the fluids produced. For homogeneous fluid systems passing through a porous medium into a producing well, it has been known for some time that the steady-state rate of liquid flow Q is given by the formula:* Q ? u log r?/r? where k is the sand permeability, h its thickness, µ the liquid viscosity, ?p the pressure drop between the well and the distant parts of the reservoir, in particular that at a radius re, and r? is the well radius. INTRODUCTION In all cave mining operations waste is drawn mixed in the ore, hauled, hoisted and milled. This waste usually contains some mineral which partly covers some of the costs of mining and milling it, but it still re- presents a loss of profits as the production rate from the mine is matched to the mill capacity - every tonne of waste milled replaces a tonne of profitable ore. Draw control aims to reduce the amount of waste drawn and to increase the amount of ore recovered. It is also used to regulate the grade of ore flowing to the mill and in block cave blocks to prevent potential stress build- up on the major apexes above grizzly drifts. This paper summarises what has been learnt about draw control in the forty years that cave mining methods have been used in the three largest underground chrysotile asbestos mines in the southern hemisphere. The four mining methods to which draw control has been applied are: a. Block caving. b. Shrinkage with overburden caving. c. Sublevel caving. d. Open stoping. Open stoping has been included because on a number of occasions severe falls from the back and side of these open stopes have occurred. Without full records of where and when ore is blasted, when and how much ore has been drawn from each of the drawpoints, it would be impossible to analyse the migration of ore and fallen waste in the stope. Several problems peculiar to chrysotile asbestos ore bodies affect the practice of draw control. Heterogeneous fragmentation, cavities, side pressures and the interaction of stresses in the caved ore affect the migration of ore under draw. Fibre is normally not developed uniformly throughout the ore bodies, values vary from place to place but there is usually a general decrease upwards and the hangingwall contact is an economic limit. The immediate hangingwall rock frequently looks like the ore body hostrock and is difficult to recognise in a drawpoint, and cannot be used as the marker for stopping draw. During caving or shrinkage, a large proportion of fibre becomes detached from the host rock and re- ports in the fines, which migrate differently to the larger rocks. The fines are not sticky, and flow easily if loose and dry, but compacted, the fibre and rock fines con- solidate the ore. During draw the proportion of fines in the ore varies considerably, as fines either flow relatively freely between the large rocks or become trapped and compacted above large rocks or hangups. This creates a large sampling error in drawpoint grade assessments, whether done visually or by bulk sampling, unless the assessments are done frequently. The method of draw control used is to regulate the draw rate in an attempt to lower the ore-waste interface as evenly as possible, and to finally stop working the drawpoint when a calculated tonnage has been drawn.

Because of the two distinct stages in the solidification of rimmed steel, segregation in the rimmed ingot is more complex than that in the killed or semikilled ingot. In the earlier stage, chemical reactions, resulting in evolution of gas and vigorous stirring of the metal, effect a degree of negative segregation unique to rimmed steel. The composition of this zone constitutes the principal quality advantage of this type of steel. In the later stage of solidification, after the evolution of gas has ceased, the segregation follows the general pattern of a more completely deoxidized steel. However, the composition of the liquid remaining after the first solidification stage varies markedly from that of the original melt, some constituents having been partially removed as reaction products while the concentration of others has been intensified by rejection from the metal solidifying in the first zone. The aim, from the standpoint of segregation, in rimmed steel of high quality is to effect a maximum negative segregation in the rim zone without excessive concentration of undesirable elements at the center of the ingot. To achieve this aim, the composition of the melt may be varied and the furnace and pouring practice may be adjusted within certain limits. It is the purpose of this study to discuss segregation in rimmed steel from the standpoint of the mechanisms that produce it and to survey the phases of open-hearth practice that influence those mechanisms. Mechanisms Producing Segregation The mechanisms that determine the degree of segregation in the rimmed ingot are closely interrelated, making it difficult to select the primary factors and to determine a satisfactory order for presenting them. For instance, the question of sulphur segregation is relatively simple, since sulphur is not directly involved in chemical reactions in the ingot; but its concentration in the rim zone is dependent not only on its original analysis in the melt, its segregation coefficient, and the freezing rate, but also on the rate of its removal from the impure film on the solidifying surface. This washing action involves all the factors (such as freezing rate, the carbon-oxygen product, pressure, etc.) that determine the rate of gas evolution and hence the efficiency of film removal. Sulphur distribution between the rim and core is affected by the volumetric ratio between the two zones, and its segregation in the core is a function not only of the freezing rate of the core but also of all the foregoing factors that determine its concentration in the metal when solidification of the core starts. To simplify the presentation, it is proposed to treat the mechanisms affecting segregation independently in this section, reserving a discussion of their over-all effects for the section in which actual segregation data are given. Diamond drilling has advanced and expanded during the past few yean. Along with this increase there has been a marked trend to rely more and more upon drilling for the outlining of ore for reserve purposes. This is especially true underground, where men have not been available for opening up ore by crosscuts, drifts and raises. During the recent heavy call upon known ore reserves, more drilling has been done for exploration and it has become expedient to drill longer lateral holes from underground and deeper holes both from surface and from exploration headings in the mines. Furthermore, these deeper holes have to be drilled closely enough to warrant calculation of "probable" if not "proven" ore, from the results obtained therefrom. Interpretation of diamond-drill results has become more precise and reliable with the growing knowledge and understanding of the geologic structures that control the geometry of ore distribution, and this has broadened the field of usefulness of the drill. All of this has created a necessity and a demand for more accurate control of the hole as to direction, a more precise and reliable method of surveying for position, and a need for better and more complete core recovery, as well as larger cores, to provide an adequate sample. At depth the control becomes more difficult and, at the same time, more important. Control A close study of drilling in various parts of the world for a period of more than 20 years has brought to light one definite rule, practically invariable; namely, that diamond-drill holes tend to deviate into a position normal to any structure existing in the rocks, such as bedding, schistosity, gneissosity, or even parting or jointing— even if the hole is started at almost any angle other than parallel with the structure. It also appears that the better developed the structure is, the more quickly will the hole get into a position perpendicular to it. It has often been said that there is a tendency for holes to "drift" in the direction of rotation. This is obviously untrue, for in a vertical hole the measure of deviation would depend upon the azimuth chosen as zero, and there is an infinite number of choices. It has been proved. however, that in homogeneous rocks there is a tendency for the hole to corkscrew, and that the direction of the spiral is the same as the direction of rotation. This may account for the belief that holes drift in that direction. Some tests have been made using right-hand and left-hand rods, and these show that no matter what the direction of rotation the hole will swing into a position perpendicular to the structure. Methods of Control The foregoing empirical rule may be used as an indirect method of control. As discussed in the economics section of this article, the main processing consideration is whether manganese will be recovered, as this has major implications for reagent consumption. Nodule processing can be classified into three sections; smelting, roasting, and leaching. Many patents have been issued for various stages of these techniques. Since extensive laboratory and pilot plant testing is continuing, it is certain that some companies are close to full-scale commercial processes. Published data does not include all of the possible concepts for nodule treatment. In fact, one may suspect that published flowsheets are those that have been rejected or have since been extensively modified.

When a new mine is in the planning stages, one of the most important decisions to be made is the selection of' face haulage equipment and the interrelated transportation system to the surface. Equally important is the method of transporting personnel supplies and repair parts from the surface to the working places. When Bell & Zoller management elected to open the new Zeigler mine in the No. 9 seam near Madisonville, Ky., last year, various transportation systems were considered. It was agreed early that a slope mine would be preferred to a shaft mine, and that belt conveyors would be more economical than a rail system.

An uncoupled thermoviscoelastic finite element formulation with an application to Underground Coal Conversion (UCC) is presented. An incremental solution procedure with an implicit time stepping scheme is used under the thermorheologically simple material (TSM) postulate. The presented formulation, for a homogeneous and isotropic medium, is employed in the simulation of the UCC post-burn phase. Temperature, displacement, stress, and failure responses under thermomechanical loading are predicted. The solutions for the selected field problem indicate potential roof collapse, stress relaxation, and modest surface subsidence with a progressive thermal and failure front. The corresponding thermoelastic responses with temperature- dependent elastic properties are also presented and compared with the thermoviscoelastic results.

The purpose of the project is to divert flood flows of North Potato Creek. The project is located in the southeast corner of Tennessee near Copperhill, approximately 160 km north of Atlanta, GA. The project consists of: a 28-m high dam, a 0.9-m diam outlet conduit, an emergency spillway, and a 4.0-m diam hard rock transbasin diversion tunnel. This flood-water management system was part of Cities Service Co. mine safety program for the Cherokee ore body, which is partially located within the creek channel. The following paper describes the entire project development from feasibility studies to design and construction management.

When coal is irradiated by the X-rays emitted from a plutonium 238 isotope, the radiation absorbed by elements of low atomic number (carbon and hydrogen) is lower than that absorbed by elements of high atomic number (silicon, aluminium, iron) which form the ash in coal. The differences are reproducible and readily measurable, and this paper describes how this technique is used to determine the ash content of coal and to optimize measurement accuracy. Uses of the output signal are given with an example of a simple control circuit, and the advantages of instantaneous ash measurement are highlighted in terms of operational convenience and profit.

The fundamental role of diffusion in many reactions occurring in solid metals has long been recognized, and there have been careful measurements of rates of diffusion in numerous alloy systems; but our understanding of the atomic mechanism by which diffusion occurs is scarcely in an advanced state.l-3 It is doubtful that this mechanism can ever be directly ascertained; rather, all imaginable mechanisms must be examined and the one that is in best accord with such data as can be obtained from suitably chosen experiments should be selected. Because of its relative simplicity, diffusion in a system containing only one kind of atomic species—commody called self-diffusion—is of considerable theoretical interest. It may be expected that diffusion theory will not be advanced appreciably until a wide variety of diffusion experiments—of which diffusion in a chemical concentration gradient and self-diffusion are two important types—are carefully performed and inter-compared. Aside from the purely theoretical interest in self-diffusion measurements, such studies will be of considerable engineering importance. The rate of any process in a pure metal requiring the movement of atoms, of which recrystallization and creep are two familiar examples, will be understood more readily with the aid of self-diffusion data.† Self-diffusion implies the diffusion of something into its exact counterpart; the detection of such a process is patently impossible, and it is necessary to substitute for it the diffusion of one isotope (in this case radioactive) into another isotope (in this case stable) of the same chemical element. There is, however, no reason to suppose that a radioactive atom will not diffuse at the same rate as its stable isotope, for all of the isotopes of the same element have exactly the same chemical properties; neither the difference in nuclear energy nor the difference in mass would be expected to exercise an important influence in this phenomenon. In this sense, self-diffusion may be thought of as the diffusion of radioactive atoms down a radioactivity concentration gradient, just as usual diffusion is the diffusion of one kind of atom down its chemical concentration gradient. The first measurements of self-difiusion were made by von Hevesy4-6 using the radioactive lead isotope thorium B in ordinary lead. The recent development of means for producing artificial radioactive elements has made possible similar measurements on gold,7, 8 copper,2, 9 and zinc.10, 11 Many of the data that have been obtained are rather poor, and no adequate reason has been given for their poorness; it appears, however, that the unsatisfactory results are characteristic of the particular experimental procedure employed, and not of self-diffusion measurements in themselves. With this issue of the Bulletin, the Institute puts into operation a plan which it has long had under consideration for enlarging its field of usefulness to its members. We refer to the Index to periodical literature bearing on mining, metallurgy, and related subjects, which will be found in the advertising section at the end of the Bulletin. The Index is printed on alternate pages so that anyone who desires to compile a card index can readily clip the items and paste them onto cards. By its affiliation with the Engineering Societies Library, the Institute possesses unexcelled facilities for the preparation of this Index, since practically every important engineering or technical paper published anywhere in the world is regularly received by the library. The items for publication in the Index are first selected by the library staff, but their final approval and their order of arrangement remains in the hands of the editor. A word should be said in explanation of the system of classification that has been adopted. It will be noted that the classification is extremely broad, no attempt having been made to gather the references into closely specialized groups. Our reason for breaking away from the modern tendency toward minute specialization is based upon the fact that the fundamental principles underlying all engineering are not by any means so diversified as has commonly been supposed. For example, it is not at, all unlikely that an engineer engaged in large-scale ore mining in the Southwest can profit by observing the methods employed by his colleagues in the Pennsylvania coal mines. It is notorious also how extensively the brotherhood of chemical engineers has profited by the. earlier experiences of the ore-dressing and metallurgical engineers. If the Index were minutely sub-divided, it would always be possible that the coal-mining engineer, for example, might fail to observe a most important paper because it happened to be listed tinder the head of iron mining. For this reason, mining practice in general is consolidated under one head. The same line of reasoning applies to other divisions as well. In order to make the Index of practical value to all members of the Institute, wherever they may be situated, the library will undertake to supply, for a nominal charge, an abstract, a translation, a typewritten copy, a photostat copy, or the original of any article in the Index. Requests for service of this character should be addressed directly to the Engineering Societies Library, 29 West 39th St., New York. Members are urged to cooperate toward the success of this new departure by sending us suggestions. Although every effort has been made to anticipate the wishes of the members, it is almost impossible to foretell what services may be most useful to our 7000 constituents. Furthermore, it is known that some men prefer one method of classification while others would find another method more convenient.

Discussion of the paper of GEORGE K. BURGESS and SIR ROBERT A. HADFIELD, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 98, February, 1915, pp. 455 to 468. ALBERT SAUVEUR, Cambridge, Mass.-There is a definiteness and finality in the investigations that have been conducted by the Bureau of Standards and in the method of presenting the results that is most satisfactory and refreshing.. A year ago Dr. Burgess and his co-workers investigated the question of critical points in carbonless iron, and they settled the question once for all. No one can now claim that the thermal point A2 in carbonless iron does not exist. At the past meeting of this Institute in Pittsburgh, Dr. Burgess showed the worthlessness of the shrinkage clause. To my mind after his demonstration no one can again claim that the shrinkage clause renders any service. He also showed us that it was a practicable proposition to use pyrometers in steel work in order to ascertain the finishing temperatures of rails. No one can again come before this body and make the claim that it is not a practical proposition. And now Dr. Burgess shows us that steel ingots can be made in a commercial way, practically free from pipe, from segregation, aid from blow holes. It places again before us in a very clear manner the question of piped ingots and of segregation, a question which has been debated for 20 years or more. I know very well the attitude of the standpatters in the matter. They claim that most of the pipe is removed in the discard, and that if a little is left it is so thoroughly welded that it does no harm. I for one am not convinced of the soundness of the argument. I do not believe there is any one present who would claim that, given an ingot free from pipe, free from segregation, and free from blow holes, better rails will not be made out of that ingot than out of the ordinary piped or segregated metal which is used by almost all of our steel mills. In my opinion, if we give our sanction to the casting of steel in the shape of piped or segregated steel ingots, we are guilty. If we give our sanction to the rolling of rails from such metal, we are guilty. It is our duty as experts, as steel makers, and as steel consumers to make and to use the best steel obtainable on a commercial basis, for the manufacture of rails. Now, we have been shown that sound ingots can be produced from which superior rails can be made. If we do not insist upon these sound ingots, then we fail in our duty. I think that the art of casting steel ingots has advanced to such a point that the casting of steel ingots piped and segregated ought no longer to be tolerated.

Chalk is a natural calcium carbonate occurring as the remains of soft, friable, minute marine organisms. Whiting can be either finely ground calcium carbonate prepared from chalk, marble, or limestone or the product obtained by chemical precipitation from a solution or suspension containing lime. Until relatively recently, whiting made from limestone was termed "whiting substitute," but it is now usually designated as limestone whiting. Precipitated calcium carbonate, sometimes called "precipitated whiting" or "precipitated chalk," is a finely divided calcium carbonate product obtained by chemical precipitation from a solution or suspension containing lime. Considerable quantities of precipitated calcium carbonates are produced from many chemical processes. Naturally occurring calcium carbonate in a variety of crystalline forms and in all degrees of chemical purity forms a substantial part of the earth's crust. Exactly where a chalk grades into a marl or calcareous shale through increase of clay or silt or into a hard limestone through consolidation and crystallization is difficult to determine because no rigid specifications have been promulgated for classifying them. Composition and Properties Once considered to be amorphous, chalk was later found to be cryptocrystalline. In the pure state it consists entirely of CaCO3, but many deposits are impure. When impurities are removed and the material is reduced to a finely divided state, it is known as chalk whiting. Much confusion attends the use of the term "chalk" as well as the classification of whiting materials. For instance, blackboard chalk is not necessarily chalk but is sometimes plaster of paris or a form of talc. Colored "chalks" may be true chalk colored and compressed with a binder but are probably such materials as hematite, clays, or carbonaceous matter. The term whiting was applied exclusively to the product derived from true chalk before World War I. Chalk imports were difficult to acquire during World War I, and whiting substitutes, a term applied to the products derived from natural rock deposits and precipitated calcium carbonate, were introduced. Substitute whitings were not acceptable at first, but it was found that blending true chalk with substitutes often created an improved product; eventually by selection of limestone and finer grinding, products not only acceptable, but for some uses superior to chalk whiting, were developed. Gradually the term "substitute" was dropped because chalk whiting had lost its importance, being largely supplanted in the United States by other whiting materials. Whiting is now made in ever-increasing quantities from limestone, marble, dolomite, marls, vein calcite, oyster-shell, as well as primary and byproduct precipitated calcium carbonates. Tars paper deals with the origin, definition and prevention of scabs an semifinished rolled-steel product. Mold coatings, which are considered essential in scab prevention, were found to be effective only in relation to the ingot surface of semikilled and killed steels and not necessary for the rolled product. That is to say, the scabs on ingots caused by having been cast in uncoated molds are eliminated in the soaking and rolling operations, therefore are not present on the rolled product. This fact, which is contrary to the average opinion, was established after extensive and thorough experiments had proved the ordinary conception of the origin of scabs to be incorrect. This subject may be of little or no concern to steel plants producing small ingots for the manufacture of small billets and bars, except as it may be of interest in showing why their surface troubles with scabs do not exist on the product of heats with normal pouring practice. But to the producer of large ingots to be rolled into slabs for large plates used in shipbuilding, it is a very important subject. DEFINITION OF A SCAB The generally accepted opinion is that the individual scabs present on rolled products (as shown by Fig. I) are considered to have been individual splashes on the ingot surface. This opinion was found to be incorrect. Experiments showed that there were no individual scabs on the product that had appeared as individuals on the ingot surface. The single scabs seen are either pieces of a shell that is present near the bottom of all top-cast ingots, or a veneer that may be present on any part of an ingot improperly poured, as when the stream strikes the mold wall. This definition is based on a detailed study of scabs and their characteristics in which the following have been found true: Location.- On the product of heats poured without trouble, scabs, if present, are always on the product that corresponds to the bottom end of the ingot, and usually occur in clusters, This is true whether molds are coated or not. Shape.-There is no regularity as to shape, size or thickness. It is sometimes possible to separate a few pieces and place them together, like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, indicating that at one time they had been united as one piece. If individual splashes were the origin of scabs, the foregoing would not be true. Instead, the splashes, which occur throughout the pouring of the ingots, would be present uniformly over the entire product and there would be considerable similarity in the shape and thickness of the scabs. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Our experimental work was conducted on 200-ton heats of semikilled plate steel tapped into an oval ladle 15 ft. high. An increase in ts, due to either the temperature or the solute conlent, results in a decrease of e11 in crystals of single-slip orientation and an increase of 011 in crystals of' (100) find (111) orientation. is orientation-dependent and at all the temperatures and in all the materials studied. The Leveling off of the engineering stress-strain curve in crystals of (100) 07-ientotion at a stress tl, is associated with extensive cross slib. The temperature and strain -rate dependence of tl are similar to those of indicating that a rate process is the cause 01 this phenomenon. The plastic deformation of silrer crystals of (110) orientation is multiple to that of crystals of single-slip orientation. THE work hardening of fcc crystals has been the subject of intensive investigations in the past 15 years. The effect of orientation, deformation temperature, solutes, second phase or precipitates, strain rate, etc., has been studied in a number of fcc metals.'-5 In spite of the considerable amount of work reported on the dependence of work hardening on the orientation, temperature, and solute concentration, certain aspects of the plastic deformation of fcc crystals have not been clarified. For instance, with the exception of a few investigations,6-8 where crystals of multiple-slip orientations have been studied, almost all the studies have been on crystals of single-slip orientations. Hence, a major portion of this study has been devoted to the dependence of plastic deformation on the multiplicity of slip systems and the enhanced possibility of dislocation interactions resulting from such multiplicity. Further, the abnormally low rate of work hardening observed at large strains at certain temperatures in crystals of the (100) orienta-tion 6-8has not been explained satisfactorily. It is the aim of this study to clarify this aspect of the orientation and temperature dependence of the plastic deformation of fcc single crystals. The work-hardening characteristics of single crystals of aluminum of ( 110) orientation have been studied at room temperatur "'12 and above." They have not been studied at temperatures where the virgin flow stress is dependent on temperature or where, in Seeger's terminology is important. The work hardening of single crystals of (110) orientation is of interest for another reason. As shown in Table I, the dislocation reactions that are possible in the (110) orientation are similar in certain respects to those that are possible in the (100) orientation. Hence, the deformation of single crystals of silver of (110) orientation was studied in the temperature range 100° to 900°K at intervals of 200°K. The effect of solute concentration on the plastic deformation of fcc single crystals of single-slip orientation has been studied by several investiaators.> In all of these investigations—with the exception of Ref. 20—single crystals of identical orientation have not been used, with the result that the orientation dependence of plastic deformation is superimposed on the effect of the solute.
