THE key to maximum production of ingots for the war effort is maximum production of pig iron. For any given furnace and ore, the most important single influence on blast-furnace production is the quality of the furnace coke. It is generally recognized that undoubtedly deterioration of Pittsburgh coking coals will be accelerated by the depletion of some of the better grades' of coal; the extension of mine mechanization, with attendant degradation of coal quality; and the opening of new coal fields, some of which are known to be fairly high in sulphur. All of these factors, contributing as they do to higher ash and sulphur, and not infrequently to inferior quality of coke, made it desirable that an extensive study be undertaken to determine the effect of washing some coals that closely approximate the average chemical composition of coking coals to be expected in the future by the subsidiaries of the United States Steel Corporation in the Pittsburgh district. It was deemed advisable to study the improvement obtained by washing such coals and to determine the need for supplementing the existing coal washery at Clairton to assure continued maximum production of pig iron from presently available furnace stacks. The existence of the coal washer at Clairton made it possible to conduct tests on coals used in raw form and on similar coals after washing. This study covers an investigation of the quality of furnace coke as affected by washing coking coals, and is confined to the use of 100 per cent high-volatile Pittsburgh seam coals from Fayette and Greene Counties in the manufacture of furnace coke. It covers the improvement in chemical and physical properties as well as the degree of uniformity in coke obtained by washing these coals, and includes the effect on blast-furnace production and practice. The test period involved is four months; the plants, Clairton by-product coke plant, and the Carrie No. I and No. 2 blast furnaces at Rankin, Pa., Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation. CLAIRTON BY-PRODUCT COKE PLANT AND COAL WASHER The Clairton by-product coke plant carbonizes 30,800 net tons of coal daily in 22 batteries containing 1482 ovens. Three oven sizes are used, commonly known as wide, medium, and narrow types, recognizing the difference in oven width. These ovens also differ in height and length. The present coal washer has a daily capacity of- approximately 14,000 tons, leaving 16,800 tons to be carbonized in raw form. Washed coal is used on all the narrow ovens and on three of the six batteries with ovens of medium width, raw coals being used on all the remaining ovens. The customary arrangement is

Data are presented in this paper to show that addition of zirconium to sand-cast Mg-Th alloys effects a marked decrease in the grain size of these alloys which is accompanied by a significant increase in the mechanical properties over the entire range of thorium content investigated. The beneficial effect of zirconium on the strength properties is maintained at elevated temperatures up to 700°F. In addition the alloys exhibit exceptionally high creep resistance at temperatures up to 600°F. Zirconium does not greatly improve the strength or creep characteristics of extruded Mg-'Th alloys. Cerium is not a desirable addition to Mg-Th-Zr alloys. IN a previous paper,' it was shown that addition of thorium to magnesium imparts exceptionally high resistance to creep at elevated temperatures both in the sand-cast and in the extruded states. The large grain size of the sand-cast alloys, however, renders them of questionable value as engineering materials. Sauerwald² showed that the grain size can be reduced effectively by the addition of zirconium. Results of a detailed study of the properties of Mg-Th-Zr alloys over a wide range of thorium content are presented in this paper. In accordance with the preliminary findings of Sauerwald,² it is shown here that Mg-Th-Zr alloys possess the unusual combination of fine grain size and a high level of strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures. Some information on the effect of cerium on the properties of Mg-Th-Zr alloys is presented also. Effect of Th on Solubility of Zr in Molten Mg Sand-cast test bars and 3 in. diam extrusion billets of Mg-Th-Zr and Mg-Th-Ce-Zr alloys* were pre- pared according to the procedures described in the previous paper.' The zirconium was added in the form of sponge metal as supplied by the Bureau of Mines.' The maximum amount of zirconium that usually can be introduced into magnesium at the customary alloying temperature of 1350° F is about 0.7 pct. The analyses in Table I clearly show that thorium in- creases the solubility of zirconium in liquid magnesium. The tabulated zirconium contents are designated as "acid soluble;" this serves to distinguish these values from the small amount of zirconium that is not dissolved when the alloy is subjected to the action of a dilute acid solution. The "acid-insoluble" zirconium is believed to be ineffective as an alloying ingredient. The acid-insoluble zirconium contents ranged between 0.03 and 0.16 pct in the present alloys, the tendency was toward higher values in alloys with higher thorium content. In contrast to the effect of thorium, cerium decreases the solubility of zirconium in magnesium. This is shown by the three Mg-Th-Ce-Zr alloyst in- cluded in Table I and stands in agreement with the observations of Nelson and Stricter".' on Mg-misch-metal-Zr alloys. Effect of Zr on Grain Size of Mg-Th Alloys The potent effect of zirconium as a grain refiner has been demonstrated for many types of magnesium alloys.3-8 Of greatest importance to date are Mg-Zn-Zr alloys5,6,8 and Mg-mischmetal-Zr alloys.3,4,7 Zirconium has also been found to exert a marked grain-refining action on Mg-Th alloys. All the Mg-Th-Zr alloys cast in the form of ½ in. diam test bars have an exceedingly fine grain size (Table I). Reference to the previous paper' will show that binary Mg-Th alloys containing up to 6 pct Th are almost completely columnar even in the M in. diam reduced section of a test bar, and that 10 to 50 pct Th alloys have an equiaxed grain structure of 0.03 to 0.08 in. The data in Table I also show that addition of cerium to Mg-Th-Zr alloys has no effect on the grain size. In addition to increasing the strength properties, the fine grain size of Mg-Th-Zr alloys

A report is given of electrical analog experiments on the effect of casing perforation completions on well productivity for ideal uniform reservoirs under steady state homogeneous fluid flow conditions. Graphical results are presented for the effect of perforations of different densities and various degrees of penetration into the formation surrounding the casing or cement sheath. The latter range from perforations which terminate flush with the casing to those which extend into the formation a distance equal to the casing diameter. For the special case where the perforations terminate immediately beyond the casing with semi-spherical protrusions the electrical analog results correct and supersede previously reported theoretical calculations. It is found that the penetration of the perforations into the surrounding productive section may so increase the resultant productivity as to approach or even exceed that for open hole completions. INTRODUCTION A theoretical analysis of the effect of casing perforation on well completion, without additional penetration of the formation, was reported several years ago.' In this treatment the perforations were represented by mathematical sinks and no explicit account was taken of the imperviousness to flow of the casing in which the perforations were made. This procedure was justified by consideration of the mutual interference between the sinks, which seemed to indicate that the analytical method automatically eliminated flow across the casing radius between the perforations. However, both further theoretical investigation and the electrical analog measurements described below showed that this assumption in the previously developed theory was not valid and that the calculated well capacities would considerably exceed the correct values. § Even if this simplifying assumption were retained the generalization of the theory to situations where the perforations extend into the producing formation would be extremely difficult. On the other hand, the electrolytic model analog of this type of steady-state homogenous fluid system is, in principle, so simple that it has not been worthwhile to attempt to develop the exact analysis even for the more limited case of strict casing perforation. The whole problem has therefore been studied anew by electrical models to cover the range from holes in the casing which terminate flush with the casing surface to such as extend into the surrounding rock to a depth equal to the casing diameter. It is to be expected that the productivity of a well completed with casing radius* rw, perforated with holes of radius Tp, and extending to depths d into the surrounding rock, would depend primarily on the dimensionless geometrical parameters Te Tw TP d of the system, such as —, —, — , and —, where re is the Tw, a a rw external boundary radius and a is the mean vertical separation between the perforations. It will also depend, of course, on the number of perforation lines or total perforation density. While such parameters automatically control analytical treatments, it would require a very extensive series of model experiments to fully disclose their functional effect on the well productivity. For practical purposes, however, a rather limited range of the variables suffices to give the effects of interest. Accordingly, in the experimental study reported here the casing diameter has been kept fixed? at six in., the perforation diameter has been taken as either one-fourth in. or one-half in., their density has been varied from one to eight per ft, and their penetration into the formation has ranged from zero to six in., with a primary scaling factor of one to six. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD AND RESEARCH Although electrolytic model experiments have been made for years, there still seems to be some question as to what set of conditions will give the best results. For this reason a number of electrode materials and electrolytes were tried. Those chosen for the final experiments were copper electrodes and a weak copper sulphate solution as the electrolyte. This 'Assuming that the casing has been cemented with a uniform and impermeable cement sheath, the effective casing radius is to be interpreted as the external radius of the cement annulus. It is also assumed here that the casing is set through the complete producing section that it is perforated throughout with a uniform density and that tie formation has a a and isotropic permeability. As noted later, however, a uniform scale change permits reinterpreting the primary measurements to correspond to a casing diameter of 12 in.

For hardening, the steel should be heated just above the critical temperature, as a properly forged steel quenched from this heat has some toughness, with maximum hardness and density. The quenching bath should be kept at approximately a constant temperature. In drawing or tempering, longer time periods at lower temperatures are better than the shorter periods at higher temperatures. A recent questionnaire brought out the following facts: The double-arc, double-taper bit and cross bit give the best service; resharpening of the drill steels most frequently was caused by wear of gage; chipping of bit was, with one exception, the second cause; breakage of shank was with one exception, the third cause; upsetting of bit, upsetting of shank, and breakage of body were the fourth cause. The direct cause of the necessity of resharpening given was poor heat treatment first, and faulty steel and severe rock conditions second. Rock-drill Steel By N. B. Hoffman Much of the drill steel produced in America is manufactured into hollow rods. After all forging has been finished the entire bar should be thoroughly annealed and heat trcated before the point is hardened and tempered, at least where the drill has heavy duty, such as working in deep holes and hard rock. A large number of tools of like character and doing work requiring similar properties are now being made of alloy steels; for instance a steel with a carbon content of 0.75 to 0.85 per cent., manganese 0.25 to 0.35, phosphorus under 0.020, sulfur under 0.030 and vanadium 0.18 to 0.23 has proved very satisfactory for chisels. A steel of this type properly manufactured will be far superior to the ordinary carbon steels, while at the same time is one whose price range should not prove prohibitive. Much of the cutting efficiency of a drill depends on proper heat treatment. This vanadium steel has a far greater safe hardening and forging range than ordinary carbon steels, making it more nearly foolproof. It will harden nicely at 1400" I?. but will also harden well and satisfactorily at 1550" F. retaining its quality of hardness and toughness in either case. Drill Steel from Hollow Ingots BY P. A. E. SOME of the principal metallurgical difficulties en-countered in the differential flotation of lead-zinc-iron sulfide ores arise from the following causes: The oxidized, or partly-oxidized, condition of one or more of the minerals ; impurities in the minerals them-selves; composition and character of the gangue miner-als; soluble salts in the ore; and unfavorable metal ratios. In many of the ores received at a custom mill there are present appreciable amounts of oxidized' or partly-oxidized minerals, although the ores may be substantially sulfides. Often the ores are not oxidized at all when received but on account of operating condi-tions at the mill it is necessary to stock them for several months before they can be milled, and considerable oxi-dation takes place while they are lying in stock. In most ores received at Midvale, when oxidation is pres-ent, the lead and iron sulfides have been more affected than the zinc sulfide, but with some ores the zinc mineral has also become partly oxidized. Some ores, such as those taken from old mine-dumps or from old stopes, may show very little total oxidation, but the greater part of the valuable minerals has been sufficiently acted upon by oxidation to make the minerals very difficult to float. Ores of this character are among the most difficult the flotation operator has to contend with, be-cause the galena, sphalerite, and pyrite are all sluggish in their behavior in the flotation cells. Only a part of the lead mineral will float in the lead circuit. The re-mainder will lag badly and tend to come up with the zinc or, if badly oxidized, will go -through all the flota-tion circuits into the tailing. The zinc mineral, if it has also been affected by oxidation, will act in a man-ner similar to the lead mineral. A hard pull will be required to float a reasonable percentage of it, and this is likely to bring up so much pyrite that it will be difficult to make a zinc concentrate of commercial grade. If it happens that the zinc mineral has not been no-ticeably affected by oxidation it will tend to float in the lead circuit because a hard pull is also required in that circuit in order to bring up the sluggish galena. When only a fraction of the sulfide minerals has become partly altered, or completely oxidized mineral is present in relatively small quantity, it is usually possible to make reasonably clean concentrates of all three sulfides, that is, lead, zinc and iron concentrates. Most of the oxi-dized and semi-oxidized minerals will go into the tailing and the losses will be proportional to the oxidation.

The Bougainville ore body was discovered in 1964 by a partnership of Conzinc Rio Tinto of Australia and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited. The ore body is a porphyry copper in a fine-grained quartz diorite, which intrudes andesite volcanics and is located at an elevation of about 2, 000 ft in the Crown Prince Range of Bougainville in the Solomon Islands. Mineralization is predominantly chalcopyrite with some bornite and some gold and silver present. Rainfall in the area amounts to 200 in. (5. 08 m) per year. An active volcano is situated only 24 miles (38.4 km) from the mine, and all structures were designed to resist seismic shocks. An interesting and unique feature of the Bougainville operation was that the overburden was stripped with hydraulic monitors. Bougainville Copper, at 90,000 tpd, is the largest copper concentrator to be designed and constructed at one time; and besides the twin 54 in. by 74 in. Allis-Chalmers gyratories, it features seven 7 ft (2. 13 m) standard and fourteen 7 ft shorthead crushers, in addition to nine 18 ft diameter by 21 ft long (5. 5 m by 6. 4 m), 4250 hp, single -stage ball mills. During the design stage of the Bougainville primary crushing plant, several alternates were studied because the ore was expected to break with the production of large amounts of small-sized particles but with a minimum of fines. These alternates included two 54 in. by 74 in. gyratories with grizzlies, two 60 in. by 89 in. gyratories, and one 72 in. by 96 in. gyratory, the latter two installations without grizzlies. The two 54 in. units with grizzlies were finally selected as giving good reliability and the ability to handle the large amounts of small material in the feed. As originally installed, grizzly bars were set at 8 in. (203 mm); but, in an effort to perform more interparticle crushing in the primary and less rock-on-steel crushing in the secondaries and tertiaries, a test is underway (1976) to determine the effect of using 6 in. (152 mm) grizzly spacings (see write -up on Anaconda's crusher at Butte). The Bougainville ore is mined with 17 cu yd (13 cu m) shovels and hauled in 105, 170, and 210 st trucks to the crushers, which are equipped for two-side dumping. Up to 40% of the ore passes the grizzlies, which are equipped with splitters; and additional horizontal splitter bars are located directly above the spider caps. Because of the grizzlies, the crushers are supported by unique U-shaped enclosures, which are in turn supported by the end and center walls of the installation.

Production of oil within the state of Pennsylvania in 1940 was slightly more than the 1939 total, and this increase was due entirely to the new flush Music Mountain field south and west of the main Bradford pool. The influence and magnitude of Music Mountain production will be separately described, inasmuch as it is an important producing unit within the state. Production Bradford Field The production listed herein for Bradford field includes only the part of the field that is within the state of Pennsylvania. Approximately 4000 bbl. per day, or 10 per cent of the total Production of Bradford field comes from Cattaraugus County, New York, and should properly be attributed to production obtained within the New York state area, although locally and economically the Bradford field, situated both in New York State and Pennsylvania, is included as a single statistical unit. The 1940 average production in the Bradford field was 34,831 bbl. per day, as compared with a daily average in 1939 of 35,340 bbl., or a decrease from 1939 of 509 bbl. per day. The decrease in production from the Pennsylvania portion of the Bradford field would have been more pronounced if a portion of the crude from the Music Mountain field were not included with the statistics for Bradford field. The decline can be attributed largely to the fact that more properties of lower average recovery were being drilled in 1939 and 1940 than in previous years, and apparently a subnormal amount of drilling occurred in 1938 and 1939, when about 2100 wells were drilled each year. The full effect of the 1940 drilling is not felt immediately and undoubtedly will affect the producing period of 1941. It appears probable that the water-flood area in the Bradford field has reached a definite peak unless some unusual economic condition should cause abnormal prices and an excessive rate of development such as occurred in 1936 and 1937. Virtually all of the production in the Bradford field was obtained by water-flooding methods, as natural or stripper wells are uneconomical and air and gas repressuring have not proved so efficient as water-flooding as a secondary recovery method. Central and Southern Pennsylvania Central and southern Pennsylvania produced a total of 4,604,763 bbl. of oil during the calendar year of 1940; that is, an increase over the 1939 total of 166,728 bbl. The daily average production was 12,581 bbl., or an increase over 1939 of 422 bbl. per day. Table I includes the total oil production for the state of Pennsylvania for the years 1937 to 1940, inclusive, and the daily average for each of these years. The mining district of Sao Fidelis, in the northern part of the State of Rio de Janeiro, is situated on the Paraiba River, where it crosses the Serra do Mar (Mountain of the Sea), in the center of a mountainous country having numerous graphitic outcrops. For a long time, these outcrops were irregularly explored by local people, who had little means and no technical advice. A few years ago, the Cia. Brasileira de Minerasgo de Grafite took over the control of some of the more important outcrops and entrusted to me the task of studying the ores and establishing a flowsheet for a pilot plant to be situated in São Fidelis—the ore to be concentrated being mostly of a very high grade. Mineralization and Ores The rocks of the district are mostly gneiss and crystalline schists, with occasional interstratification of dolomitic limestone belonging to the Archean Brazilian Fundamental Complex. The general direction of the beds is roughly between 60" and 80°E., with variable dip, generally nearly vertical. Mostly, direction and dip of the graphitic outcrops is concordant with the embanking gneisses or schists. These outcrops seem to be aligned in two or three parallel zones (Pádua, São Fidelis, Mac- abu), the Sao Fidelis zone being the best known and the most important to date. Two outcrops of the São Fidelis zone, Saudade and Sao Benedito, are now being exploited. Mining has been carried out, so far, on a small scale. The mineralization consists of a vein of nearly massive graphite in a very compact, partially granitized gneiss, with vertical dip. The vein is most irregular, with nests and lenses irregularly distributed along the fracture plane. The ore consists chiefly (particularly in Sao Benedito) of massive graphite appearing and disappearing along the main direction of the vein, forming a succession of irregular lenses in a sort of rosary design. The average width is more or less one foot, with variations from zero to 6 feet. The lode minerals are quartz, a little feldspar and garnet (the latter having its origin perhaps in the embedding gneisses), with rare ferruginous clays on the outcrops. In Saudade a little pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite is found occasionally, as well as a carbonaceous mineral, very light, black and shiny, with conchoidal fracture, looking like a sort of jet. The composition of this mineral has not yet been established, but it seems to be very complex. The mineralization seems to be hydro-thermal at a rather low temperature, perhaps mesothermal. The paragenesis, according to samples from Saudade, seems to be as follows, the earlier minerals being listed first: pyrrhotite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, with quartz concomitant to the three and graphite formed later. THE peninsula of Nicoya contains virtually all of the known manganese deposits of Costa Rica. These are south and west of the Tempisque River, which flows across the peninsula near its juncture with the mainland. This peninsula forms the westernmost part of the province of Guanacaste, which is the northern of the two Pacific Coast provinces of Costa Rica. The larger villages are connected by ox-cart roads and trails. The area may be covered on horseback without difficulty except during the rainy season, when rivers are in flood and difficult to ford. This is particularly true of the Rio Seco-Guayjiniquil area, where there are no inhabitants and few open trails through the tropical jungle. Santa Cruz and Sardinal are served by the Taca Airlines, two planes a week from San Jose and Puntarenas. The port of Puntarenas has excellent loading facilities but none are available nearer the manganese districts; there ore must be lightered to vessels standing offshore. PHYSIOGRAPHY In Costa Rica there are three physiographic divisions: (I) the central plateau (Mesa Central), a somewhat dissected lava platform upon which are superimposed volcanic peaks, some of which are still active: (2) the Atlantic low-lands and (3) the Pacific lowlands. The peninsula of Nicoya and the larger part of the province of Guanacaste lie within the Pacific low lands. The term "lowland" indicates relation to the central plateau, as the peninsula of Nicoya is largely mountainous. The mountains of Nicoya form the southern extremity of a range of low hills, which are almost continuous along the Costa Rican coast to the Nicaraguan border. The coast line shows evidence of subsidence. The Gulf of Nicoya obviously is the drowned valley of the Tempisque River. The west coast of Nicoya shows many rocks, shoals, bays, inlets and small islands as evidence of a sea encroachment. The altitude of the manganese deposits ranges from o to 800 ft. Topography is of the mature type of wide valleys and low hills, often with abrupt slopes. The climate is tropical and humid; rainfall of 125 in. falls largely between Sept. I and Jan. I. Vegetation often is very dense, the Rio Seco-Guayjiniquil area being truly tropical jungle, containing many hardwoods. HISTORY AND PRODUCTION The production of manganese ore in Costa Rica apparently dates from the first World War. It reached a peak of about 10,000 tons in the year 1919, then declined rapidly. Evidence of this period of prospecting has rotted away or been swallowed by the jungle. The war now in progress apparently revived the interest in Costa Rican manganese and has encouraged further prospecting. The slate industry of the United States has shown a marked decline in value of products made annually since the peak year 1925, although there has been moderate improvement over the lean years 1932 to 1934. In 1940, the value of all slate products sold was approximately 5¾ million dollars for a total output of 473,450 short tons. The quantity sold was a little less and the value a great deal lower than the annual averages for the past two decades. Enormous quantities of waste materials result from the quarrying, splitting and milling of slate. Obviously, utilization of such waste material is desirable, not only from the viewpoint of economical operation but also for the purpose of conserving natural resources. One possible use is to produce expanded or puffed lightweight aggregate for use in concretes. Such concretes are strong enough for specific uses, and the advantage of lightness could be obtained in such structures as the walls and roofs of buildings, suspension-bridge roadways and various other applications where weight is a factor. Conceivably, these uses could consume an appreciable annual tonnage. Use of Waste Slates for Making Aggregates The lightweight-aggregate industry has been discussed elsewhere4,5 and need not be covered in detail in this paper. The materials commonly utilized are naturally occurring aggregates such as volcanic cinder, tuff and pumice; by-product materials, such as ordinary cinders and air-cooled slags; and the specially manufactured products, including Haydite, Pottsco, Gravelite, Cel-seal, Superock and Waylite. Slates, however, have not been given the consideration they merit, especially in the United States. In the British Isles, some work has been done3 on certain Welsh slates by the Building Research Station to stimulate the use of these wastes. Requirements for Raw Materials As pointed out by Hughes,4 the lightweight-aggregate industry is segregated in regions adjacent to large cities in order to localize the market and avoid the necessity of long freight haulage. Waste slate from the deposits of eastern Pennsylvania, northern Maryland, and Virginia would meet the basic requirement of ally low-priced structural raw material. One apparent advantage is attained when slate waste, normally discarded, is utilized in the manufacture of a by-product. Mining or quarrying costs usually have been assessed against the main product. Some additional grinding might be desirable, but this operation would be relatively cheap, as most slates grind easily. It is believed that virtually all slates, when properly heated, will expand to some degree. However, types that will expand from 3 to 7 times their original volume are preferred. However, the geochemical methods and certain combinations between chemical and geological methods now used might be the answer to our prayers for direct and more definite methods of determining the quality of the ore or its relative metal content. Geochemical and spectrochemical analysis of minute content in ground waters, in soil or in plants and trees, living or dead, will be extremely important and I would venture to predict that in the very near future each mining or exploration company and each assay oflice will have its own spectroscope equipped for accurate chemical analysis, not only to guide the daily work in the mine, but also for identifying ores as well as for guiding exploration, geological mapping and the evaluation of geophysical indications. These methods, although they are still in their infancy, promise very much for the future. Radioactivity methods could also be helpful when sufficient facilities for radioactivity determination can be made available. They have already been used to a great extent in oil exploration and experiments have shomn great promise for ore exploration also. As for future surveys of large areas, the exploration for physical contrasts will be made from the air, using aeroplanes, helicopters, etc. Already electrical and magnetic methods have been designed whereby the instruments are carried in the aircraft and by automatic recording the location of anomalies is made in a simple enough manner. It should be possible in this way to cover, say, a square mile in an hour. Later Discussion Replies to Dr Lundberg. J. B. Macelwane.*—Someone has said that if a person knows his subject well enough he can explain it in words of one syllable. The point is well taken and I think the converse is also true. If a person cannot explain a subject clearly in simple words, it is either because he has not sufficient command of the language, or he is not master of his subject. Now it is obvious, it seems to me, that the remedy for both of these unfortunate conditions lies not in less education, but in more. If Dr. Lundberg has met geophysicists who confused and discouraged prospective clients by their inability to talk the language of the mine owner or of the mining engineer or geologist, the fault most probably lay in the geophysicist's lack of sufficient training; but it may also have been the want of ordinary common sense, which no amount of education can supply. It is hard to understand the position taken by Dr. Lundberg. Does he regret his own extensive training? noes he wish to say that he would have had greater success in geophysics if he had been only a mine hand with an instrument and a rule of thumb? As a matter of fact, I find it rather difficult to account for his presentation before this Committee on Geophysics of an emotionally distorted picture of the Report of the Committee on Geophysical Education, after the lapse of an entire year since the Report was read and discussed in its proper place, unless he honestly thinks he is handicapped by his knowledge and training and wishes to warn the whole profession against a similar fate. I regret that I am obliged to disagree so emphatically with Dr. Lundberg's thesis— but I believe it would be dangerous if left unchallenged, both because of the inaccurate statements it contains concerning the recommendations made in the Report and because of the ultimate discredit that would be bound to fall upon genuine geophysics if Dr. Lundberg's recommendations were extensively followed out. Kelly.*-—The argument that a science and its practitioners can be improved by debasing the standard of educational preparation is indeed a strange argument to come from the pen of a man with the education of Dr. Hans Lundberg. A method has been developed to calculate wellbore temperatures during mud circulation and the actual cementing operation to aid in the design of cement slurries. The method agrees within 10F with previously measured values. The calculation technique provides temperatures, as functions of time, at varying depths in both the casing and annulus. The technique also provides this information if a relatively cool cement slurry is pumped into the well immediately following circulation of hot mud. Circulating bottom hole temperatures of brine and a bentonite mud were measured. INTRODUCTION As wells are drilled deeper, greater demands are being made on all phases of the industry, and new technology has been developed to provide satisfactory well completions. However, little or no work has been conducted on accurately determining bottom-hole, static and circulating temperatures.. In designing a cement slurry, such factors as density, fluid loss control, viscosity, deterioration from ternperature, compressive strength and pumping time must be considered. Individual well conditions often make it necessary to include still other factors. Pumping time is a primary consideration and, as wells are drilled deeper, encountering higher bottom-hole temperatures, this property becomes even more important. Cement slurries must be designed with sufficient pumping time to provide safe placement in the well; however, the slurry cannot be overly retarded as this will prevent the development of satisfactory compressive strength. The pumping time of a specific cement is currently obtained by subjecting the cement to simulated conditions of temperature and pressure. A reasonably accurate bottom-hole pressure may be obtained by considering hydrostatic heads of fluids, friction pressure and wellhead pressures. However, accurately determining bottom-hole temperatures is much more difficult. Bottom-hole static temperatures are estimated by considering several sources of information, including logging temperatures, published temperature gradient maps and field experience. This information is usually questionable due to disagreement of data from the various sources. Temperature gradient maps were constructed based on temperatures recorded many years ago while running bottom-hole pressure tests. These thermal gradients then represent an average of well conditions and cannot always apply to a specific well. Also, logging temperatures may be affected by the time since fluid was last circulated, rate of penetration, circulating rate and many other factors. Therefore, even though logging temperatures are available, the question still exists as to the correction factor that should be applied to obtain an accurate static temperature. After obtaining static bottom-hole temperature, it is then necessary to relate this to circulating temperatures actually encountered by the cement slurry. This is accomplished by selecting a test schedule from the API RP-10B corresponding to the estimated well conditions.' The API-recommended practice for testing oilwell cement provides testing schedules for various well depths and conditions. These schedules are intended to simulate down-hole conditions during cementing. They provide a rate at which both temperature and pressure are increased until the estimated circulating conditions are reached. These testing schedules represent circulating temperatures for an average well and, although there is flexibility in choosing the test schedule that most accurately simulates the temperature of an individual well, it still is not possible to consider all the well conditions that will affect the bottom-hole temperature. Many factors affect cement temperatures; for example, the length of time a well has remained static prior to running casing and cementing, the circulation time, the temperature of fluids used in cementing, fluid density and flow properties of fluids. The pumping time for a typical retarded cement could vary from 2 to 4 hours with a 10F change in testing temperature. Variations in pumping time are the most critical in highly retarded cements used in deep, hot wells; yet, predicting bottom-hole circulating temperatures is more difficult in these wells. This work was conducted to develop a means of calculating circulating temperatures as a function of well depth, casing and hole size, pumping rate and time, fluid and reservoir physical properties and thermal status of the well. PREVIOUS WORK In 1941 Farris reported on a study to develop information leading to a more practical laboratory evaluation of oilfield cementing mixtures and performance.' Control of artesian ground water has played an important role in the development of Texas Gulf Sulphur's phosphate mining venture in eastern North Carolina. To facilitate dry mining methods, 60 million gpd of fresh water is pumped through wells from a limestone aquifer underlying the uniform flat-lying ore section. Hydrologic information revealed from pumping tests has been used in successfully developing a depressurizing system. Computer assistance is used to plan well patterns. High volume pumping has lowered water levels in water wells over a large area in the Coastal Plain without detrimental effects on water quality in the aquifer. Cooperative effort between mining firms will be required to control the ground water as new mines are developed in the district. An intricate observation -well system is monitored regularly over the wide area of pumping effect to ensure that gradient reversals have not caused salt water encroachment.

Hibbard, New York City (communication to the Secretary): The title of Mr. Sargent's paper is somewhat misleading, since the paper itself relates chiefly to various kinds of annealing and their effects, and in very small part only to heat-treatment proper. This term has a well-defined meaning in steel metallurgf, and always includes a rate of cooling faster than the material treated would have in the open air. In bringing about this accelerated rate of cooling, some medium other than air at rest is brought into contact with the heated steel. Usually a liquid (almost always either oil or water) is employed ; but for certain steels a blast of air, and for others an easily fusible or soft metal, such as led (either solid or melted), may be used. Heat-treatment usually includes also subsequent moderate heating, followed, it may be, with another accelerated cooling.

In a paper which I had the honor to present to the Institute at the Montreal meeting, September 1879,I took occasion to refer incidentally to certain practical difficulties in the sampling of coal-seams {Trans. Vol. VIII., p. 181-3). This reference was particularly to the unequal distribution of sulphur in the form of pyrite, and to the necessity of discriminating between the several members or " benches " of a coal seam as to their relative proportion of visible sulphur. What is a practically truthful estimation of the sulphur of a coal seam, is not necessarily the estimation of an average of sulphur in any given line of cross-section of the seam. Cornparatively speaking, the range of sulphur in quantity is generally so low that errors in its determination, arising from neglectful sampling or from slips in the laboratory, fall chiefly upon this single ingredient. Similarities are noted in the practices and problems of constructing dams to impound mine tailings, fly ash, and chemical wastes. The comparison of a typical tailings dam with a conventional water-retaining earth dam shows that the former is inherently less stable and can be susceptible to cracking, liquefaction, erosion, and frost action, as illustrated by examples. Several methods are presented for building safe tailings dams using either the coarse fraction of the tailings or local soils, the important factor in each method being proper compaction of the material. The safety of existing tailings dams can be improved by flattening the overall slope, preferably by adding berms, or by decreasing the height. Where neither remedy is possible, the installation of electro-osmotic tie-backs is suggested. Dumps of mine spoil can be stabilized economically by compacting the material in layers along the toe to form a dam.
