High quality quartz crystals weighing more than 50 grams are required in several important industrial applications.30,31 Primarily, they are the basic raw material for precision, electronic, frequency control components; this includes oscillators and filters in both radio and telephone services. Quartz crystals are also necessary for optical lenses and prisms in special applications requiring high ultraviolet light-transmission as in spectrographs. Quartz wedges are regular components for petrographic microscopes. The application of crystalline quartz as a transducer* in ultrasonic devices has increased in recent years despite strong competition from barium titanate and magnetostrictive [f] devices. Some quartz is fabricated into delay lines for radar. Man has valued quartz for fabrication of art objects since the dawn of history. The art forms were and are painstakingly carved and polished to form intricate figurines, bowls, statuettes, and the well-known crystal balls. The largest known ball, made of perfect quartz from Burma, is now in the National Museum in Washington. It is 12 7/8 in. in diameter and weighs 106 lb 12 oz. Clear, pure quartz chips and small crystals not meeting the electronic-grade dimensional requirements are known by the Brazilian term lasca. They are used to produce fused quartz having wide application in laboratory equipment, as special glasses, for torsion suspension in scientific instruments, and as a source material for growing large artificial quartz crystals 18,35 Electronic applications far exceed all other uses in importance so any discussion of high-quality quartz crystals must be concerned almost exclusively with those functions. Historical Background Because of their ubiquitous character and natural beauty, quartz crystals have long been of interest and known to man. They have been found among early Egyptian and Chinese art forms and the Sumerians are believed to have fashioned seals, beads, and other jewelry from quartz crystals, perhaps 5,000 years ago. Also, American Indians made arrow heads and fashioned some simple objects of different kinds. The origin of the name quartz, although of Greek derivation, is uncertain. The Greeks appropriately applied their word for frozen water or ice, krustallos, to quartz. The present-day, large-scale practical applications of quartz crystals began in 1880-1881 when Pierre and Jacques Curie reported discovery of the "piezoelectric" effect. They found this effect first in Rochelle salt, a common product of grape-wine refineries, while studying crystal symmetry. Piezoelectricity is that property found in certain crystals, including quartz, whereby electrical charges of equal and opposite sign appear on opposite parts of the crystals when they are stressed. If equal and opposite forces are applied to two opposing prism edges of a single untwinned quartz crystal a positive electrical charge will appear on one edge and a negative charge on the other. The amount of the charges will be directly proportional to the force applied. This property seems to be intimately related to pyroelectricity

The oil and gas fields of Michigan that have been under development since 1925 are in an area that extends across the middle of the lower peninsula from northeast to southwest, a distance of about 200 miles, and with a width of about 80 miles. In 19 years 70 fields have been discovered. Most of these are relatively small when compared with other oil-producing areas. This is borne out by the fact that since the first wells were drilled these fields have produced a total of only 204,000,000 bbl. However, Michigan is still maintaining its production, for during the past five years the annual production has remained fairly constant at approximately 20,000,000 bbl. Production for 1943, as reported by the Bureau of Mines, was 20,682,000 barrels. Roughly, one third oi Michigan's production in 1943 came from the Reed City field, which was discovered in 1941. During the year, 237 oil wells were completed in Michigan in 1943. The decrease of 56 from the 1942 total is probably due to the continuance of Government regulations requiring a 40-acre spacing pattern over most of the state. Fig. I shows the principal oil and gas fields of Michigan, and the columnar section, Fig. 2, shows the principal producing horizons in relation to the section drilled. The data of Table I and Table 2 have been carefully checked with previous reports to eliminate errors. Six new producing areas were discovered during 1943 and five areas discovered in 1942 were developed during the year. Both the new discoveries and the 1942 discoveries that were developed appear to be small and relatively unimportant. Goodwell Field.—The best discovery of the year is the Goodwell field, T. 14 N., R. 11 W., Goodwell township, Newaygo County. This small structure was located by core testing done by The Pure Oil Co. in 1942 and early 1943. The first producing well, C. R. Harris No. I, was completed on July 5, 1943, ill the Traverse limestone at a total depth of 2742 ft., with ail estimated potential of 1100 bbl. per day. By the end of the year, 18 wells had been completed in this field and approximately 281,000 bbl. of oil produced. The field operated under proration of 262 bbl. per day per well from Oct. I to Dec. I; 150 bbl. per day per well after that date. Woodville Field.—The small Woodville pool, T. 15 N., R. 11 W., 3 miles north of the Goodwell field, was discovered by core testing by the Ohio Oil Co. The discovery well was completed on May 5, 1943, flowing 650 bbl. of fluid, including 18 per cent salt water the first 18 hr., from the Traverse limestone at a depth of 2810 to 2815 ft. Seven wells had been completed by the end of the year and 67,000 bbl. of oil had been produced. Development is now practically at a standstill because further drilling does not aDDear economically iustified.

Surveying of many holes drilled by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in the Metaline district has shown surprising deviations. The holes start in the Ledbetter slate (Ordovician) and pass into the underlying gently dipping Metaline limestone (Cambrian) at varying depths, locally in excess of 1000 it. All holes start vertical, but one had deflected as much as 35° at a depth of only 300 it. One hole was found to be deflected 70' at a depth of 1000 ft. These deviations were not indicated to the drillers by any action of the rods or machines. Analysis of the survey data in the light of the observed geology indicates that the holes deviate most in the Ledbetter slate and scarcely at all in the Metaline limestone. The upper part of the "limestone'" in most holes is a massive rock strongly altered by hydrothermal action and essentially homogeneous. The slate is only obscurely bedded but has a cleavage, varying from slight to strong, which is unrelated to bedding. Drill holes have deflected to become nearly perpendicular to the cleavage. Several plans and cross sections are submitted showing the behavior of various holes. Exploration has been conducted largely by deep diamond drilling, and in the course of this work it was found that holes became seriously deflected. This paper deals with the nature and causes of these deflections. The district lies along the Pend Oreille River in the northeastern corner of Washington, about loo miles north of Spokane, 9 miles from British Columbia, and 15 miles from Idaho. Three mines are now in operation and for a number of years have furnished a considerable production of zinc and lead. The ore contains zinc and lead in a ratio of about 31/2 to I, and occurs in the upper part of the Metaline limestone of Cambrian age, the upper member of which, where unaltered, is a rather pure limestone. This is overlain by Ledbetter slate of Ordovician age. Ore has formed by replacement of limestone, commonly 100 to 200 ft. below the slate, in areas of gentle dip, resulting in extensive tabular ore bodies. In and near ore, limestone has been intensely altered to granular dolomite and fine-grained quartz, which, where it predominates, forms "jasperoid." As part of their war program, the Geological survey and Bureau of Mines of the U. S. Department of Interior have been cooperating in an investigation of the district. The exploration by the Bureau of Mines in 1943 and 1944 was conducted largely by deep diamond drilling in which as much as 1000 ft. or more of Ledbetter slate was penetrated before the ore-bearing Metalin-2 limestone was reached. During the course of this drilling it was found that holes were seriously deflected while traversing the Ledbetter slate.

THE 1944 Chairman of the Institute of Metals Division might be classed as metallurgically ambidextrous ; he is teacher of theory and practice of both nonferrous and ferrous metallurgy, and he is consultant on brass and on highspred steel. Arthur Phillips was born in Troy N.Y. and attended the New Haven Connecticut high school. Upon graduation he entered Yale, receiving a degree in metallurgy in 1913. At that time Professor Mathewson was starting his plan of '"co-operation with the metal industries in metallographic work at the Hammond Laboratory of the Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University, and Arthur Phillip, became the first co-operative graduate student, working in the laboratory of the Bridgeport Brass Co., and receiving his Masters of Science degree in 1915. A little later, when the department of metallurgy at Yale was expanded. Me. Phillips was appointed assistant professor. In 1928 he was made associate professor, and in 1934 he was promoted to full professor.

Following the end of hostilities of World War 11, a resurgence of industrial and home building has given impetus to the use of many products of the stone industry. Shortage and high prices of some building materials such as lumber have aided wider acceptance of materials such as concrete products which have been relatively plentiful and which have not risen so rapidly in price. Ingredients for many of these substituting materials come from the stone industries, often from by-products of stone operations. Most of the tonnage of the stone industry in the State of Georgia comes from granite and marble. There are extensive dimension stone operations in granite in the Elberton and in the Lithonia areas. Building and monumental marble from the Tate area has been used throughout the country. Cutting operations in both types of stone have their by-products in faulty blocks and in spalls. In the State there are three large crushed-stone plants utilizing granite, One near Camak, One near Lithonia and one at Stockbridge. All have had excess fines Or in in the past but this excess is largely disappearing with development of new uses. At times this "waste" has amounted to as much as 20 pct of the stone quarried. Handling Of this large tonnage from point of screening out to storage piles presented a costly problem and large areas were taken up by the piles. Crushed 'tone is generally sold with a a narrow margin Of price over cost, so any elimination of disposal cost or increase of income by marketing of by-products is highly desirable. By-products of Granite Dimension Stone It sometimes becomes difficult to differentiate between main product and byproduct. In the cutting of granite dimension stone in the Lithonia district of Georgia, a considerable quantity of remnants of Uneven shape and size is produced. The larger of these pieces have long found use as building rubble, particularly for retaining walls and building foundations (Fig I), They are broken down to one man size by plug drilling and wedging and by hammer. In recent times, demand for this former by-product has grown so that quarries have been opened for the production of rubble as a main product. Local masons have attained skill in using these irregular shapes to form economical and attractive walls. Areas such as Elberton, Georgia, which do not have a large building market nearby, tend to accumulate piles of large pieces of reject stone. When a road job or other local construction offers a quantity market for crushed stone, a portable crusher works this material down to crushed aggregate. Spalls and finer chips from granite stone-cutting operations have generally found their way into crushers and thence to the many uses for crushed aggregate. One company near Lithonia started marketing the smaller by-product crushed sizes for chicken grit about ten years ago. This use has grown to nation-wide distribution and the tonnage is now so great that they have opened a large quarry with

The effect of sintering types 302, 3028, and 430 stainless steel powder compacts in hydrogen and dissociated ammonia was investigated. It was found that sintering in dissociated ammonia resulted in as much as 0.5 wt pct increase in the nitrogen content of stainless steel even though the dissociation of the gas was complete. Sintering in hydrogen, on the other hand, reduced the nitrogen content of the stainless steel to less than 0.01 wt pct. In the case of the 302-type stainless steel, the low nitrogen content resulted in a material that was largely ferritic, whereas the high nitrogen content rendered the material fully austenitic. Sintering in dissociated ammonia resulted in lower density, generally lower tensile strength, less ductility, and higher hardness than sintering under equivalent conditions in hydrogen. The reduction of oxides on both stainless steel and iron particles was found to be effected by hydrogen partial pressure in the sintering atmosphere. Compacting pressure was found also to effect oxide reduction during sintering. DISSOCIATED ammonia often is used as a substitute'.' for hydrogen in sintering and in annealing, since economic advantages sometimes can be obtained by such a substitution. In addition, anhydrous ammonia contains very little impurity. Thus, dissociated ammonia gas is very dry whereas tank hydrogen often must be freed of oxygen and water vapor prior to use in many applications. The sintering of stainless steel powder compacts as well as bright annealing is well recognized as requiring a hydrogen atmosphere and for the foregoing reasons dissociated ammonia is frequently substituted. It has generally been overlooked, however, that the nitrogen in dissociated ammonia might have an important effect on the sintering process and on the properties of stainless steel compacts. Considered an inert gas in many applications, nitrogen, on the other hand, is very reactive with cer- tain metals. Dissociated ammonia could not be used for hydriding zirconium or titanium. Nitrogen reacts with columbium, tantalum, chromium, uranium, thorium, and many other active metals. Iron and iron-base alloys are, for the most part, inert in nitrogen but there are many borderline cases. It has been reported that stainless steel stabilized with columbium or titanium should not be sintered in dissociated ammonia.3 olybdenum has been reported as reacting with dissociated ammonia to a minor extent.' Although most of the reactions with iron-base alloys are attributed to the action of un-dissociated ammonia and the action of nascent nitrogen, Uhlig4 showed how readily pure molecular nitrogen reacts with and diffuses into 18-8 stainless steel at 1150°C. He also pointed out how readily nitrogen diffuses out of 18-8 stainless steel when heated in pure dry hydrogen, and these thorough investigations on the subject show that commercial stainless steels are nitrogen-bearing, since they are melted in air. Vanadium is one of the materials being considered for use in fast-breeder nuclear reactors. It is a good heat conductor and nearly transparent to radiation, properties regarded as ideal for nuclear fuel containers. The problem has been the metal lacks ductility needed for forming. In our program at Reno Laboratory the effects of the U.S. Bureau of Mines (previous affiliation) the effects of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon have been reported21,22 nd most recently the effects of boron and boron with carbon.23 The continuing study by the Ames Laboratory of the effects of hydrogen, the most subtle and fugitive element in its relationship to structure and properties, is commendable. The solubility of oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen in vanadium (and other bcc metals as well) is related to material purity. With the available limit on metal purity and the interaction (clustering) of hydrogen with the other interstitial and substitutional elements present in their base metal, would the authors comment on the tolerance of hydrogen in relation to oxy- gen that will avoid intergranular fracture and above what content or how seriously harmful in oxygen at various carbon levels? Understanding the true effects of hydrogen (and other interstitial impurities) in vanadium depends on knowledge of the amount present under various conditions and its distribution between various possible positions. Significant amounts of hydrogen may be in "thermo-dynamic" solution, but not as individual atoms in interstitial positions. It may be in grain boundaries, in subgrain boundaries, in vacancies, or in dislocations. Some of the hydrogen may be paired or in complexes with impurities in substitutional solid solution in vanadium. This makes the analysis of the effect of hydrogen vastly more difficult. It should not be expected that hydrogen in grain boundaries will affect slip in the same manner as hydrogen in interstitial positions, nor will the complexes react to heat treatment the same way as hydrogen in dislocations. It is gratifying that the authors have quoted results from two of our inestiations,' but neglected one2' which applied the Petch theory to electrorefined vanadium of high purity and analyzed the effects of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon on the ai and ky values obtained by the extrapolation and grain size methods. Details can be found in the paper. Briefly, we obtained a ui value of 10,300 psi (t = 5150 psi) at 273°K. The metal also exhibited profuse twinning with high ductility at 123" and 77°K. Nitrogen was more effective than oxygen in increasing ui, the increase being about twice as much for the same impurity level. Carbon additions resulted in only minimal changes in Ui. The corresponding ky increased as oxygen and nitrogen increased, with nitrogen being more effective. Carbon additions resulted in little change. Although the difference in yield strength of vanadium was explained on the basis of the Cottrell-Bilby model of the tearing away of dislocations from the impurity atoms,

Density data are reported on 16 saturated hydrocarbon vapors at Pressures ranging from 1000 to 8220 Ib. per sq. in. and at temperatures ranging from 35° to 250°F. These data have been used to extend the compressibility-factor chart for natural gases up to 10,000 lb. per sq. in. The relatively large quantity of high-boiling constituents present in high-pressure vapors in equilibrium with crude oils makes it necessary to include in the analysis of the gas the molecular weight, density, and possibly boiling range of the heptanes and heavier fraction. Relationships have been presented by which the density of gases may be obtained directly from the temperature, pressure, and gas gravity provided the gases have a common source or are similar in composition. Introduction The densities of natural gases are necessary in many engineering in in petroleum production and utilization, Gas reserves, changes in reservoir pressure, gradients in gas wells, metering of gases, pipeline flow, and compression of gases are typical problems requiring the density of the gas. A decade ago, engineering computations used ideal gas laws with deviations up to 500 Ib. per sq. in.4 Recent discoveries of pools having Pressures UP to 7500 lb. Per sq. in., and installation of pressure-maintenance and recycling plants, have increased the need for data On gas density at high pressures. Methods of Computation The accepted method of computing the density or specific volume of natural gases is the use of the ideal gas law corrected by a compressibility factor. The method proposed by Kay7 of correlating compressibility factors for gaseous mixtures on pseudocritical properties5 appears to be satisfactory for natural gases.2 The meth-me-compressibility factor has been shown to deviate systematically from the behavior of natural gases2 and a chart giving these corrected factors is available. A method of computing specific volume of gaseous mixtures from partial molal volumes has been reported by sage and Lacey.8 Complete data for the computation are not yet available for all hydrocarbon gases. Most- of the reported data on gas densities have been in the single-phase region removed from the dew point or saturation condition. Since most gases in the reservoir Or while on contact with liquid '''ring flow are saturated, the determination of densities under conditions of saturation is particularly important. Although there is no reason to believe that the saturated gases differ in behavior from those consider. ably removed from their dew points, the usual experimental determinations find difficulty on approaching the dew-point conditions, This paper reports the density of I6 saturated gases in equilibrium with crude oils. The relationships developed to compute the density of gases to high pressure' have been modified and enlarged. A simpli-fied method of obtaining gas density is presented in the Form of charts, which apply for specific groups of gases.

During the years 1942-1934, about 125 New England deposits were mined for sheet and punch mica, and many others were briefly prospected. During this period the Geological Survey, United States Department of the Interior, carried on detailcd studies of the deposits and the pegmatite bodies that contain them. The primary purpose of the studies was to provide geological information that would contribute toward efficient mine development and operation. The studies were aimed directly at practical production problems. Detailed maps showing the structure of the deposits were prepared, and geological findings were closely correlated with data on specific yields and costs of mining and processing. The result is information that permits a reasonably accurate appraisal of the mica deposits of New England and the mining industry that they support. At a time when the future of the industry is in doubt, it seems desirable to submit this appraisal for consideration. Domestic mica deposits supply only a small fraction of the country's needs in normal times? for only the richest domestic deposits can compete with the low-cost mines of India and Brazil. However, the possibility that this country may be cut off from its supplies in time of war gives domestic deposits an importance much greater than their peacetime production would imply. New England supplied about 22 per cent of domestic output in 1943 and 1944, the peak years of wartime production. Its actual contribution to the war effort was greater, for the proportion of sheet mica of high quality in the New England product is higher than the average for domestic mica. The data analyzed below were collected for the Geological Survey by D. M. Larra-bee, A. H. McNair, J. J. Page, V. E. Shai-nin, G. W. Stewart, and the co-authors of this paper. Anyone who has been confronted with the problem of predicting the performance of a sand-pump installation is vitally aware of the dearth of precise information that has been published on this important subject. Such data as have been collected are not readily available in a concise and readily usable form, so that many operators would find it a considerable chore to find the pertinent information required to undertake a detailed study. The purpose of this paper is to assemble such established data, correlate them with field experience and outline the factors that must be appraised in the determination of a satisfactory pump installation. The transportation of solids in solution is of vital interest to every mill superintendent and operator, and many of the factors that are involved in this hydraulic problem vary widely from installation to installation, and in some cases even from time to time on any one installation. These include: type of solids (including shape of particles), size of solids (grind), percentages of fines (slimes), dilution of pulp, contour of pipe line, type of pipe, age of pipe line, effect that diameter of pipe has on characteristic flow conditions, and other factors. Some of these have been fairly well determined by experimental work but many still must be established through interpolating or extrapolating between values that have been derived from known field conditions. Most problems primarily concern the transportation of a definite weight of dry solids from one specific location to another. The type of material, shape of particles, grind and percentages of fines are established and very often the dilution at which the solids must be handled as well. The problem then evolves into a determination of the size, type and contour of the pipe line and the net effective head against which the pump must operate. Before discussing the determination of the head, it might be well to review the interrelationship between the pump discharge (capacity), the head developed by the pump and the pump speed, which will apply to any centrifugal pump installation. Effect of Pump Speed Basically, the head developed by a centrifugal pump varies as the square of the pump speed and the discharge as the first power of the speed. However, even at constant speed a centrifugal pump will operate over a wide range of capacities, depending upon the head that must be developed to deliver the liquid or pulp to the end of the pipe line. This is shown graphically in Fig. I. If the pump in question is being driven at a constant speed of goo r.p.m. it will deliver 500 U. S. gal. per min. against a head of 56 ft., 800 U. DENSITY data are reported on 16 saturated hydrocarbon vapors at pressures ranging from 1000 to 8220 lb. per sq. in. and at temperatures ranging from 35° to 250°F. These data have been used to extend the compressibility-factor chart for natural gases up to 10,000 lb. per sq. in. The relatively large quantity of high-boiling constituents present in high-pressure vapors in equilibrium with crude oils makes it necessary to include in the analysis of the gas the molecular weight, density, and possibly boiling range of the heptanes and heavier fraction. Relationships have been presented by which the density of gases may be obtained directly from the temperature, pressure, and gas gravity provided the gases have a common source or are similar in composition. INTRODUCTION The densities of natural gases are necessary in many engineering computations in petroleum production and utilization. Gas reserves, changes in reservoir pressure, gradients in gas wells, metering of gases, pipeline flow, and compression of gases are typical problems requiring the density of the gas. A decade ago, engineering computations used ideal gas laws with deviations up to 500 lb. per sq. in.4 Recent discoveries of pools having pressures up to 7500 lb. per sq. in., and installation of pressure-maintenance and recycling plants, have increased the need for data on gas density at high pressures. METHODS OF COMPUTATION The accepted method of computing the density or specific volume of natural gases is the use of the ideal gas law corrected by a compressibility factor. The method proposed by Kay7 of correlating compressibility factors for gaseous mixtures on pseudocritical properties5 appears to be satisfactory for natural gases.2 The methane-compressibility factor has been shown to deviate systematically from the behavior of natural gases2 and a chart giving these corrected factors is available. A method of computing specific volume of gaseous mixtures from partial molal volumes has been reported by Sage and Lacey.8 Complete data for the computation are not yet available for all hydrocarbon gases. Most of the reported data on gas densities have been in the single-phase region removed from the dew point or saturation condition. Since most gases in the reservoir or while on contact with liquid during flow are saturated, the determination of densities under conditions of saturation is particularly important. Although there is no reason to believe that the saturated gases differ in behavior from those considerably removed from their dew points, the usual experimental determinations find difficulty on approaching the dew-point conditions. This paper reports the density of 16 saturated gases in equilibrium with crude oils. The relationships developed to compute the density of gases to high pressure' have been modified and enlarged. A simplified method of obtaining gas density is presented in the form of charts, which apply for specific groups of gases.

A discussion of the paper by Messrs. Jüptner von Jonstorff, Blair, Dillner and Stead, read by title at the Lake Superior meeting, but presented first at the New York meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute (October, 1904), and here published under a mutual agreement between the two Institutes. Correspondence. MR. R. HAMILTON (Glengarnock) wrote to say that it was known for many years, that unless certain precautions were taken in dissolving the sample, there was a liability to obtain a solution from which the ammonium-molybdate solution would not precipitate the whole of the phosphorus. In 1877 Blair and Finkiner independently attributed this interference to the presence of carbonaceous matter in the solution, derived from the action of acids on the combined carbon of the metal, and they directed that the solution should be prepared in such a manner as to destroy these carbonaceous compounds. This was practically effected by evaporating the acid solution to dryness and roasting the residue. Adolf Tamm, in 1884, accentuated the same view. There are methods founded on the above-mentioned observations which leave nothing to be desired in point of accuracy, but the evaporation to dryness with subsequent roasting and re-solution consumes much time, besides the minor inconvenience caused by large amounts of acid fumes. In 1888 P. W. Shinier suggested that the incomplete precipitation of phosphorus was due to incomplete oxidation of -.the phosphorus, and proposed to render all the phosphorus precipitable by oxidizing the solution with potassium permanganate, etc. Experiments were made to test the accuracy of this view (details will be found in the Journal of the Society of Chemical Industry, vol. x., p. 904), and the results obtained seem to-prove that it is the correct one. UNTIL June, 1868, it had not been attempted, either in this country or abroad, to manufacture by mechanical means, from anthracite coal-dust, artificial fuel for domestic use. Several attempts had been made to utilize coal-waste by converting it into a fuel for manufacturing purposes, but none of the processes were original, and they were merely applications of the well-known European processes and machinery, slightly modified by American ingenuity and mechanical skill. With one exception all those attempts have been failures. The great difficulty in the application of European processes and machinery has always been the limited production, and the excessive cost of the manufactured product, as compared with the cost of mining and preparing the ordinary anthracite coal for the market. The only serious and intelligent attempt to manufacture, on a large scale, artificial fuel for manufacturing purposes, has been made by the Anthracite Fuel Company, whose works are erected at Fort Ewen, near Rondout, New York. This company, organized under the auspices of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, had to go through the usual course of difficulties, breakages, and disappointments, which seems to be the lot of every new industry. Thanks, however, to the energy and perseverance of Mr. L. L. Crounsse, a gentleman of means, from Washington, D. C., the enterprise succeeded, and it is to-day established on a permanent basis. In order to increase the production, and to reduce its cost, the Anthracite Fuel Company was compelled to change most of its plant, and to erect more powerful machinery, producing lumps of a larger size, almost twice the size of the lumps made previously by the same company.
