In the past year or two, considerable effort has been expended to calculate the spherical wave propagation phenomena associated with explosions in a "hard rock" medium (Godfrey, 1969; McKay and Godfrey, 1969; Burford, et al, 1970). This effort was stimulated primarily by the recognition that early calculations predicted peak particle displacements which seriouly disagreed with field data. In most of the calculations mentioned above, rock was modeled as an inelastic continuum (see for example Isenberg, et al, 1970 for some recent results using "classical" elastic-plastic material property models). However, several investigators (Handin, et al, 1967; Cherry, et al, 1967) have shown that the simple classical yield surface models cannot simultaneously account for the observed brittle failures of intact materials under compression, extension and torsion. One approach to more correct modeling of dynamic rock behavior is to make the inelastic model more and more sophisticated. For ex- ample, recent experiments at the University of Utah (Swanson, 1969) have suggested possible modifications to the yield surface model that could better account for the ductile behavior of intact granite sam- ples under various states of stress. The approach followed in this paper proceeds in an entirely different direction. We want the physics which is built into our conception of rock to be as simple as possible while at the same time reproducing the most important features of rock's behavior. Therefore, we abandon the requirement that rock be treated strictly as a continuum. Instead we consider a "discontinuous" model in which one of the most significant characteristics of rock is treated..

ONE of the gravest problems of the iron foundry today is the accumulation of sulfur in commercial scrap and its effect on the castings made therewith. The ordinary jobbing castings today show a sulfur content of 0.18 per cent., and occasionally as high as 0.22 per cent. The product of the foundry during the war is undoubtedly .to blame for this rapid increase and conditions will become worse as the millions of tons of gray-iron castings of the war period return to the foundry in the form of commercial scrap. In the ordinary cupola remelting of pig and scrap, at least 0.02 per cent. sulfur is taken up; often double that amount. The high cost and difficulty of obtaining pig iron during the war period compelled the use of considerable scrap in the mixtures; frequently charges containing. 90. per cent. of bought scrap were melted. Naturally the sulfur content of the castings increased. Until the advent of the basic-hearth electric furnace, the only method of holding the sulfur within reasonable limits was to use high percentages of pig in the foundry mixtures. Pig iron seldom contains over 0.05 per cent. sulfur, if well made. With pig iron forming 60 percent. of the .charge and the gates, runners, rejections, and bought scrap the other 40 per cent., the sulfur content of the castings can easily be held down to 0.10 per cent. Pig iron, however, costs more than scrap even when melting loss differences are considered, hence as small a percentage as possible will be used.

The necessity, on the Pacific Coast and throughout the semiarid regions in particular, of the conservation of waters for agricultural, industrial and mining purposes has forced itself upon the minds of those directly or indirectly interested in these industries. To meet the requirements of the case, storage must be provided for the flood-waters so abundant during the rainy season in order to insure a constant and unfailing supply during the summer months. Such storage can only be obtained, in the greater number of instances, by the erection of reservoir-walls of great height. The feasibility of employing earth or timber in the construction of such high dams is questionable, especially when (as is often the case) they must be placed in torrential streams. The experience of recent years with masonry dams, throughout this and foreign countries, has demonstrated that such dams, when intelligently and correctly designed and properly constructed, will meet the requirements of larger storage by means of increased height. The failures of masonry dams have been few; only two of any consequence being on record, namely, that of the Puentes dam, in Spain, in 1802, and that of the Habra dam, in Algiers, in 1810.* On the other hand, the failures of wooden and earthern dams are innumerable. Based on our finding that commercial copper chelating solvent extractants such as LIX65NR and LIX63R are excellent collectors for copper minerals, a detailed study was made using several water-soluble chelating agents belonging to the class of aromatic hydroxyoximes and having a gradual structural variation. A basic study of the system salicylaldoximetenorite was also carried out. Microflotation tests as a function of concentration of oxime, pH, addition of copper, etc., using oxidic copper minerals such as chrysocolla and tenorite, and batch laboratory flotation tests using synthetic mixtures of quartz and oxidic copper minerals were carried out. The results have demonstrated that the hydroxyoximes studied have comparable collector property, and in all cases the oxime was found to be partitioned between the mineral surface and the copper in the bulk aqueous phase in the form of a bulk copper chelate. The occurrence of the latter could be accounted for by formation in the bulk phase of a chelate between oxime and copper released from the mineral and/or by the detachment of the surface chelate. The role of surface and bulk chelates in flotation is discussed based on the results of partitioning of chelating agent into bulk and surface chelates in the salicylaldoxime-tenorite system. The effect of structural aspects such as isomerism and substitution in the molecule on the collector property of the oximes is also discussed. Substitution on oximic carbon by alkyl groups is found to promote collector activity. Only the anti-isomer has the ability to collect.

A GENERAL decline in copper production for most American producers occurred during the past year as a result of shortage in available labor. Few noteworthy technical developments have been reported; undoubtedly, many changes and improvements have been made but have not been reported because of lack of time. During the war years through 1944 the pressure for sustained high production has been of prime importance and during 1945, with slackening of production, many operators were faced with the problem of catching up on repairs and maintenance of plants, with inadequate labor supply. In hydrometallurgy there were some important developments that undoubtedly will be reported during 1946. Several operators in the Southwest have instituted experimental leaching programs to exploit low-grade oxidized and mixed ore bodies. The Bureau of Mines is conducting pilot-plant experimental work to determine the possibility of producing a satisfactory sponge iron at an attractive cost from deposits of iron ore and coal in Arizona. The discussion is based on a statistical analysis of a large set of deflection data from exploratory boreholes in South African gold mines. The effect of variations of pressure-dependent viscosity and gas law deviation factor on the flow of real gases through porous media has been considered. A rigorous gas flow equation was developed which is a second order, non-linear partial differential equation with variable coeficients. This equation was reduced by a change of variable to a form similar to the diffusivity equation, but with potential-dependent diffusivity. The change of variable can be used as a new pseudo-pressure for gas flow which replaces pressure or pressure-squared as currently applied to gas flow. Substitution of the real gas pseudo-pressure has a nrtmber of important consequences. First, second degree pressure gradient terms which have commonly been neglected under the assumption that the pressure gradient is small everywhere in the flow system, are rigorously handled. Omission of second degree terms leads to verious errors in estimated pressure distributions for tight formations. Second, flow equations in terms of the real gas pseudo-pressure do not contain viscosity or gas law deviation factors, and thus avoid the need for selection of an average pressure to evaluate physical properties. Third, the real gas pseudo-pressure can be determined numerically in term of pseudo-reduced pressures and temperatures from existing physical property correlations to provide generally useful information. The real gas pseudo-pressure was determined by numerical integration and is presented in both tabular and graphical form in this paper. Finally, production of real gas can be correlated in terms of the real gas pseudo-pressure and shown to be similar to liquid flow as described by diffusivity equation solutions. Applications of the real gas pseudo-pressnre to radial flow systems under transient, steady-state or approximate pseudo-steady-state injection or production have been considered. Superposition of the linearized real gas flow solutions to generate variable rate performance was investigated and found satisfactory. This provides justification for pressure build-up testing. It is believed that the concept of the real gas pseudo-pressure will lead to improved interpretation of results of current gas well testing procedures, both steady and unsteady-state in nature, and improved forecasting of gas production. INTRODUCTION In recent years a considerable effort has been directed to the theory of isothermal flow of gases through porous media. The present state of knowledge is far from being fully developed. The difficulty lies in the non-linearity of partial differential equations which describe both real and ideal gas flow. Solutions which are available are approximate analytical solutions, graphical solutions, analogue solutions and numerical solutions. The earliest attempt to solve this problem involved the method of successions of steady states proposed by Muskat.' Approximate analytical solutions' were obtained by linearizing the flow equation for ideal gas to yield a diffusivity-type equation. Such solutions, though widely used and easy to apply to engineering problems, are of limited value bemuse of idealized assumptions and restrictions imposed upon the flow equation. The validity of linearized equations and the conditions under which their solutions apply have not been fully discussed in the literature. Approximate solutions are those of Heatherington et al.. MacRobertsl and Janicek and Katz.' A graphical solution of the linearized equation was given by Cornell and Katz. Also, by using the mean value of the time derivative in the flow equation, Rowan and Clegg' gave several simple approximate solutions. All the solutions were obtained assuming small pressure gradients and constant gas properties. Variation of gas properties with pressure has been neglected because of analytic difficulties. even in approximate analytic solutions. Green and Wilts8 used an electrical network for simulating one-dimensional flow of an ideal gas. Numerical methods using finite difference equations and digital computing techniques have been used extensively for solving both ideal and real gas equations. Aronofsky and Jenkins"I " and Bruce et al.11 gave numerical solutions for linear and radial gas flow. Douglas et al." gave a solution for a square drainage area. Aronofsky 13 included the effect of slippage on ideal gas flow. The most important contribution to the theory of flow of ideal gases through porous media was the conclusion reached by Aronofsky and Jenkins" that solutions for the liquid flow case'" could be used to generate approximate solutions for constant rate production of ideal gases. An equation describing the flow of real gases has been solved for special cases by a number of investigators using numerical methods. Aronofsky and Ferris 10 onsidered linear flow, while Aronofsky and Porter 17 considered radial gas flow. Gas properties were permitted to vary as linear functions of pressure. Recently, CarteP 18 proposed an empirical correlation by which gas well behavior can be estimated from solutions of the diffusivity equation using instantaneour values of pressure-dependent gas

OCTOBER will be western month for the Institute. With meetings at Spokane, Tulsa, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, and with a large number of American Institute of Mining Engineers members and their families in the party sailing out through the Golden Gate to Japan on the afternoon of the tenth, the major activities of the Institute will, for this month at least, be west of the Mississippi. Despite cancellations due to necessity, most of the officers of the Institute will be present and taking part in some one or more of the Western meetings. Prof. Robert S. Richards, our senior past-president, will attend both the Spokane and San Francisco meetings and then go to Japan. President Bradley will preside at the San Francisco meeting and then head the party going to Tokyo. At Tulsa and Los Angeles, the principal officers of the Petroleum Division will be present and active and at all the meetings, directors, ex-directors and -present and past officers will be on the job and keeping things moving.

Waterhouse announced that the fall meeting will be devoted to alloy steel. This meeting will be held in Chicago the week of Sept. 22 in connection with the National Metal Congress. He also announced that oxygen in steel will be the central idea of the meeting which will be held in New York next February. The first paper, entitled "Sintering Limonitic Iron Ore at Ironton, Minn.," was presented by Perry G. Harrison (T. P. 284), the author. Sintering was first un¬dertaken in 1024 to treat Cuyuna range iron and manganiferous ores low in silica and high in moisture and containing objectionable qualities of fine... A Dwight-Lloyd machine was first installed. This machine was replaced by a larger one having a width of 72 in. The power cost was decreased from about $11.22 per ton of sinter on a 42-in. machine to about X0.14 for the 72-in. machine. The tons of sinter per man-shift was increased from 11.86 to 16.77. Improvements embodied in the larger plant reduced the cost of sintering to $0.41. The analyses of iron ore and manganiferous ore and the sinter produced from these materials was used to show the increase in value at the mine resulting from sintering. THE death, on May 6, 1908, of Dr. Hermann Wedding, Privy Mining Councilor of the Kingdom of Prussia, and Professor of the Metallurgy of Iron and Steel at the Royal Mining Academy of Berlin, was a loss keenly felt by the whole metallurgical world. Not alone in his native land, but also in foreign countries did he enjoy an esteem of which the title of honorary membership in the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the United States Association of Charcoal Iron-Workers, and the (British) Iron and Steel Institute bears eloquent testimony. Hermann Wedding was born March 9, 1834, in Berlin. At the suggestion of Dr. C. J. B. Karsten, the veteran father of Prussian metallurgy and author of the first German text-book of the metallurgy of iron, lie turned his attention, after gradu¬ating from the gymnasium, to mining and metallurgy. In 1853, he began a practical course at the Malapane iron-works, in Upper Silesia. Subsequently, he studied at the Berlin Mining Academy, and received from the University in 1859 the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. A journey which be made to England, somewhat later, led to his undertaking a German translation, with revision and additions, of John Percy's classic treatise on the metallurgy of iron and steel, the publication of which, in successive installments, stretched through many years. In 1863, lie published, as a thesis in connection with his "Assessor's examination," an essay, entitled The Results of the Bessemer Process for the Production of Steel, and Its Prospects for the Rhenish and Westphalian Iron and Steel Industry, which revealed such ability and knowledge as to secure for him a call to the chair of metallurgy in the Berlin Mining Academy.

THE present milling operations of the Chief Consolidated Mining Co. consist- of flotation of oxidized minerals from siliceous ores of the Tintic Mining district, Utah. As the lead, silver, and gold minerals that give the ores economic value are almost entirely oxidized; their successful flotation has necessitated the solution of many new problems. Laboratory effort resulted in the selection of a, natural float for the oxidized minerals. 'By "natural float," I mean that no reagent was added to produce a sulfide film on the osidized minerals before or while subjecting them to flotation operations. As compared to methods involving sulfide filming, the natural float was selected because it promised successful treatment of a larger variety, of ores without change in quantity or kind of reagents, as well as a better economic balance between metal recovery and concentration ratio. In explanation, I can, state that with sulfide filming, the efficiency of the method decreases rapidly with increase of hydrated, iron osides in the ore, whereas with the natural float the same effect has not been noted. Evidence shows that although sulfidizing can produce greater metal recoveries, it yields a concentrate so much lower in grade that no advantage results.

Cu-Pb alloys in the vicinity of the monotectic composition have been directionally solidified under a high temperature gradient at rates up to 2 X l0-' cm per sec. Over a wide range of compositions, high growth rates yield a composite structure consisting of continuous rods of lead in a copper matrix. This range of compositions increases with increasing growth rate, in agreement with arguments based on the relative velocities of composite growth and the growth of copper dendrites or lead drops. The breakdown of the composite structure at slow growth rates is explained in terms of the relative interphase surface energies. The observed interrod spacings of the composite structure are large compared with the predictions of the Jackson-Hunt equations of eutectic growth. ThE directional solidification of many eutectic alloys produces fine composite structures of parallel lamellae or rods. There has been considerable interest not only in the fundamentals of this two-phase solidification process,'-3 but also in the interesting physical properties produced by such regular and aniso-tropic microstructures. Composite structures can be grown only over a limited range of composition, beyond which coarse primary dendrites of one phase appear. In organic eutec-tics, this composition range of composite structures has been shown to increase with increasing growth rate.7"10 These results were explained in terms of the relative velocities of composite (coupled) growth and dendritic growth. Although similar arguments should apply to metallic eutectics,11-13 suitable experimental results are lacking. In contrast to the work on eutectics, the directional solidification of monotectic alloys has received little attention. (The monotectic reaction is similar to the eutectic reaction, except that one of the resulting phases is a liquid, which subsequently solidifies in a separate reaction at a lower temperature.) Directional solidification of some monotectic alloys'4715 yields regular rodlike microstructures, whereas in other cases macroscopic separation of solid and liquid phases occurs.16 chadwick17 rationalized these results in terms of the probable relative magnitudes of the various interphase surface energies. A recent study of chill-cast Cu-Pb alloys18 revealed a fine rodlike microstructure in alloys near the monotectic composition. It was decided to investigate the directional solidification of such alloys, and to determine the range of composition and growth conditions yielding composite structures. The Cu-Pb system is convenient for such a study, both because it is simple metallurgically, with no compound formation and negligible solid solubilities, and because its basic properties are well-documented. Recent literature on the Cu-Pb system includes studies of bulk thermo-dynamic properties,'g surface energies,20"21 densi-ties,25 and diffusion constants.a6 A similar study of the directional solidification of Cu-Pb alloys was recently undertaken, independently, by Kamio and Oya." EXPERIMENTAL Alloys were prepared by melting 99.999 pct Cu and 99.999 pct Pb in a graphite crucible, stirring well, and pouring into a cold graphite mold. Rods 0.175 in. in diam were machined from the ingots. Alloy compositions studied ranged from 25 to 55 wt pct Pb. Samples were placed in graphite crucibles 5 in. long with 4 in. OD and 0.035-in. walls. They were melted under flowing argon in a vertical, two-zone. platinum -wound furnace. A voltage stabilizer was used to minimize fluctuations in input power. The narrow specimen diameter minimized convection. Directional solidification was achieved by driving the crucible downward into a +-in. hole in a water-cooled copper toroid. The toroid was located immediately below the narrow end zone of the furnace. The end zone was separately powered to maintain high local temperature. Therefore a high temperature gradient (approximately 300 deg per cm) was maintained in the specimen throughout the run. The crucible motion was screw-driven. and a wide range of drive speeds were available. The limited rate of heat removal caused a thermal lag in the specimens at high drive rates. However. temperature-time curves from thermocouples imbedded in a representative sample indicated that the average growth rate still approximately equaled the drive rate. Although the specimens were initially homogeneous, melting and re solidification redistributed the lead. producing composition variations of several percent along the specimen length. (During melting. lead melted first and ran down the sample surface. Rapid freezing tended to reproduce the resulting composition gr~dient, but slow freezing did not because a slow-moving interface tended to reject lead. as discussed later.) To determine local composition. ;-g samples were cut from regions exhibiting various microstructures and were chemically analyzed for lead content. Micrographs were taken on as-polished or lightly etched surfaces. Three-dimensional structure of the lead network was viewed with a scanning electron microscope after removal of some of the copper matrix with nitric acid. RESULTS Several different microstructures are observed, depending on composition and drive rate. DESPITE the intense preoccupation of most of those members connected with the mining, concentration, and reduction of iron ores, the luncheon and subsequent technical session of the Eastern Magnetite Committee were exceedingly well attended. Many of the older faces were absent, but new ones took their places. More than sixty, all told, took in the technical session. Chairman Crockett opened the session by calling upon Meredith E. Johnson, whose paper, with its accompanying graph, was in reality a comprehensive historical review of iron mining from colonial days to the end of 1941. with some notes on current expansion which indicates that New Jersey is destined to become a still more important. factor in the production of magnetite ores.

MECHANIZATION of American coal mining continues to make rapid progress. Economic pressure will compel abandonment of manual methods wherever possible and will also provide the incentive needed for the improvement of machines and mining systems. However, rapid progress may be made along strictly technological lines and at the same time much slower progress in approaching maximum productivly and efficiency. One can well ask, just how efficient are mechanized mines, and to what extent is productivity affected by the mental attitude of management and workers?
