INTRODUCTION TO COMPOSITING Individual drill hole samples may vary greatly in size, length, and weight. The sample interval may represent any convenient unit of hole length, and is usually related to the type of drill being used to obtain the sample. Depending upon the type of mineral deposit, it is desirable to group the individual sample values into composite weighted values representative of some particular zone or volume of the ore body. For example, values of several sequential samples of diamond drill core 3 m (10 ft) in length may be grouped together to represent a 12-m (40-ft) sample value over one bench height. On the other hand, several individual sample values taken across the thickness of a stratiform deposit or a vein zone may be weighted together to represent the value of the total thickness at the point of intersection. The choice of composite intervals is usually dictated by the type of mineral deposit and the mining method selected to produce the mineral. The techniques of weighting values from various lengths of samples into a composite value has already been discussed briefly in Chapter 3. Further examples of determining weighted composite values will be given in the following discussion on compositing for various types of mineral deposits. SAMPLE VALUE COMPOSITES AND TYPES OF MINERAL DEPOSITS There are many kinds of mineral deposits, each of which will require special treatment of sample data to obtain the best composite intervals for evaluating the deposit. MUCH attention has been directed to mine-air flow in recent years, more especially in Great Britian where there is frequent reference to a theory of fluid flow developed by English engineers. Briefly stated, this theory is that for similar passages of the same relative roughness, in which fluid flow occurs, the conditions of flow are exactly the same for equal values of the product W D V/ µ, where W = density of the fluid, D = diameter of the passage through which flow occurs, V = mean velocity of flow, and µ = absolute viscosity of the fluid flowing. This, the "Reynolds Criterion" of fluid flow, had its origin in the work of Prof. Osborne Reynolds' more than 40 years ago. Later, Lord Rayleigh amplified the theory2 which has been conclusively proved for small pipes by the experiments of Stanton and Pannel3 over a large flow range, and by Lacey4 over a somewhat more limited range. Concordant results on small pipes have also been obtained by numerous other investigators with single fluids over more or less limited ranges of flow. According to this theory results in one medium, such as water, are immediately applicable to another, such as air; and experimental results on models are (theoretically, at least) applicable to full-scale designs. This is of great importance in aeronautics and can be of considerable value in mine ventilation research. Hodgson, in a recent paper,5 has outlined the application of this theory to mine-air flow and recent English experiments" on the resistance of a timbered mine airway have been expressed in this form.

Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 189 consists of a record of the scientific data obtained in the iron blast-furnace slag investigation which is reported in Technical Paper 187, "Slag Viscosity Tables for Blastfurnace Work." It includes a description of the method of preparing the synthetic melts, construction of an improved electric furnace, and refinements in laboratory methods of measurement. Only the general features of the work and the conclusions drawn from the experimental data can be given attention here. Silicates in the Liquid State In the manufacture of refractories, Portland cement, glass, and porcelain, and in pyrometallurgical operations, importance attaches to the behavior of-silicate compounds at temperatures beyond the range of common experience. This field of research has not been investigated as carefully as its scientific and industrial importance would seem to warrant. Probably the most important of the unsolved problems in the chernistry of silicates is the question of their stability in the liquid state. That little progress toward the solution of this problem has been made is not strange if there be borne in mind the difficulties attending experiments made at temperatures at which silicates become fluid, and the comparatively short time since it became possible to measure these temperatures. On the other 'hand, considerable progress has been made in the study of the compounds in the solid state because of the directness and simplicity of methods of optical examination. Important advances have been made by the Geophysical Laboratory at Washington in recent years. As DEVELOPED up to the end of the Great War, an airplane was essentially a mechanism of wood and fabric, joined and held together by metal fittings and, fastening. The engine and accessories, wire for wheel spokes and other tension members, and the occasional use of metal for interplane struts and the shafts of surface controls required some metal, but essentially it was a. wood and fabric structure. Attempts had been made to use metal for other purposes, such as struts in the drag-trussing of wing panels and for short interplane struts, and Junkers had produced an airplane of iron in 1915. By 1917 he was using steel tubes and duralu-min sheets, securing noteworthy advantages aerodynamically and from the standpoint of weigh PRINCIPLES OF AIRPLANE CONSTRUCTION The loaded weight of airplanes ranges from 500 lb. for the light plane of which we heard so much a short time ago, to about 40,000 lb. The great majority of planes range from 2000 to 10,000 lb. Of this weight from 15. to 30 per cent. is for the dividend-earning load. This percentage is so low that every per cent. saved on the rest of the weight increases the pay load from 3 to 6 per cent. The economic value of every pound that can be saved in designing or constructing a plane is sufficiently great to warrant spending money on refined methods of structural analysis, materials of superior strength properties for a given weight, methods of manufacture which may make possible the use of refinements in structural design, and the like, to an extent unknown heretofore.

For the first time, Gap possesses a number of important properties which make it well-suited for use in electro-optic modulators. First, the transverse electro-optic effect is operable in this material, which makes it possible to increase the path length of the modulated iron doping of Gap has been achieved; this results i?z resistivities of approximately 10" ohm-cm. The problelrls of residual strain and isolated shorting paths in these crystals have been partially solved. Electro-optic modulation of visible radiation has been demonstrated with this material. It is anticipated that further improvement with regard to the probleins of strain and shorting paths will result in a practical Gap electro-optic modulator. radiation without increasing the applied voltage. THE Wisconsin. Zinc District, or the Upper Mississippi Lead and Zinc District as it is often called, lies in the southwestern corner of Wisconsin, in, Grant, Iowa and Lafayette Counties, and it includes adjoining parts of Illinois and Iowa. The district is about 70 miles long, north and south, and about 40 miles wide, east and west. It lies wholly within what is geologically known as the non-glaciated area of the Upper Mississippi Valley. HISTORY OF THE DISTRICT The district was first opened up as a lead producer in 1822. From this time until 1860, about 205,000 tons of cog lead (galena) and washed lead (galena) was produced from shallow crevices and openings. From 1860 to 1900, about 74,500 tons was produced, and since that time, from 5000 to 7000 tons has been produced annually. Since-1900, most of the lead concentrate produced has been as a byproduct of the zinc mines. The first zinc ores were mined about 1862. These were the carbonate ores, locally known as " drybone." Very little zinc blende was mined in the district, previous to 1875. The zinc blende ores mined from 1875 to 1900 were mostly of the high-grade, hand-cobbed, sheet-ore class, which usually contained from 45 to 60 per cent. metallic zinc. Such nines as the "Sallie Waters," ? Quinlin," "Lead Mine," "Benton Blende" and "Ida Blende," located near Benton, Wis., were mines which produced ores of this type, during this period. The mines located at Highland, the "Coker Mine" located at Livingston, Wis., and the "Opencut Mine" located at Shullsburg, Wis., were mines that were heavy zinc carbonate producers, previous to 1900.

Haulage trucks designed expressly for mine service were introduced about 35 years ago. The first models to arrive on the scene hauled about 15 tons and easily outperformed the modified highway trucks that had been used for mine haulage up to that time. The specialized trucks obviously had a greater potential for mining operations, and once this fact was recognized, competitive pressures in both the mining and truck-manufacturing industries drove the new vehicles toward ever more efficient performance. Many changes in truck design resulted, but not all were accepted for a variety of reasons. Often poor design was the reason, but in many cases progressive and promising designs were abandoned only because the truck manufacturer lacked the courage, tenacity, or vision to capitalize on them. There were also many cases where a promising new design was abandoned because the prototypes were initiated in a mine where personnel lacked the patience to prove them. Truck Startup Takes A Team Ally new truck that is to succeed and contribute to lower mine haulage costs must be well conceived and launched with good teamwork on the part of all concerned. Naturally, it is essential to have a good overall truck design at the outset to make this teamwork worthwhile. The design must include the selection of the right components manufactured by suppliers that can each do justice to their particular part of the new truck. Last, but by no means least, the mine operator where the truck is to be launched must be enthusiastic in his efforts to see the new vehicle through to successful operation.

The attention of the members of the Institute of Mining Engineers is asked to a description of the minerals of Southwestern Pennsylvania, as representing the minerals of an enormous area, stretching continuotisly, with local variations, along the western slopes, and at the base of the Alleghany Mountains, through Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, and destined to play no mean part in the future of the iron trade of the country. The particular locality is at and near Donbar, in Fayette County, where the most careful examinations and extensive developments have been made. The deep gorges cut by the Youghiogheny and Monongahela Rivers, in their passage through the mountains and lower lands, give admirable facilities for observing the measures lying between the sandstones of No. 11 and the upper coal measures. Apart from its varied mineral and agricultural resources this section of country has great historic interest attaching to it. It was down the Monongahela that Braddock led his ill-fated army to its defeat under the wails of Port Duquesne, and it was up the Youghiogheny River and Dunbar Creek that the shattered remnants hastily fled to gain the camp of Colonel Dunbar, the second in command, who was entrenched upon a high knob, at the head of the creek which bears his name, and which is still known and visited as Dunbar's Camp. Numerous streams, runs, and localities preserve the names of the guides and pioneers who accompanied, in early colonial times, young George Washington, who was pushing his surveys into the trackless and hostile wilderness, and many of them taking up large tracts of

Roof and rib failures in underground coal mines are one of the major problems facing the industry today. In addition to safety considerations, the resulting economic impact of such failures is staggering. Uncovering and replacing buried and damaged equipment and clearing entries can account for a large expenditure in lost man-hours and machinery. Yet, because of the complex nature of its formation, geological variability, and structural characteristics, coal mine roof strata is one of the least controlable of all mine design parameters. This is especially true along the leading (southeastern) edge of the Appalachian coalfields where considerable faulting and movement has contributed to hazardous coal mining roof conditions. During this research, a detailed study of several mines, in the southern Appalachian coalfields, was undertaken to determine the most prominent geomechanical factors affecting roof stability and to evaluate their influence in promoting unstable ground conditions. In order to accomplish this task, the major geological and geomechanical features found to be detrimental to coal mine roof within the Appalachian basin were identified and mapped in four Virginia mines. Statistical processing by chi-square and regression analysis was used to determine the influence of geology, mine-layout, and support methods on roof stability. It was found that some easily determined parameters can be successfully used to predict potentially unstable areas. A simplified roof classification system was developed based on these geomechanical parameters, which can be used to assess the stability of a particular roof type. A roof rating index was also devised capable' of expressing the probability of a failure under a given set geomechanical condition.

Solid solution alloying increases the plastic properties of aluminum at elevated temperatures by solid solution strengthening, by restraining recovery and recrystallization, and by a Cottrell effect. When binary aluminum alloys are strained and aged at 1940° to 300°K they develop a yield point. This is attributed to a migration of dislocations to solute atoms during aging. IN view of the ever expanding interest in applications of metals and alloys to high temperature service conditions, it becomes increasingly important to be cognizant of the effect of various metallurgical factors on the strength of alloys at elevated temperatures. One problem of wide interest, not only because of its engineering significance but also due to its fundamental scientific importance, is the elucidation of the effect of alloying elements on the plastic properties of homogeneous a solid solutions at elevated temperatures. It is indeed astonishing to note that in spite of its importance, and in spite of extensive random testing of alloys at elevated temperatures, no systematic investigation has been reported yet on the effect of alloying additions on the plastic properties of a solid solutions at elevated temperatures. This deficiency in our knowledge prompted the investigation described in this report. Rather extensive data are currently available on the effect of alloying elements on the plastic properties of a solid solutions at atmospheric and sub-atmospheric temperatures. Such data might be ex- trapolated to higher temperatures and reasonable guesses might be made regarding the influence of such factors as recovery and recrystallization in order to hazard a qualitative estimate of the effect of alloying elements on the plastic properties of a solid solutions at elevated temperatures. The introduction and development of the flotation process have proved to be of such momentous importance to the mining industry of the United States that they deserve to be considered historically.* The origin of the use of oily matter in separating minerals in ores is obscure, because its beginnings were unregarded. The story told by Herodotus concerning the recovery of gold from the mud of a lake by means of feathers daubed with pitch in the hands of apocryphal virgins is as pertinent to our inquiry as the yarn, two thousand years later, of a young school-teacher in Colorado that was washing oil-stained ore-sacks in her brother's assay-office when she noted the floating of pyrite on the water contaminated by the oil. In any event, the method patented by Carrie Everaon in 1885 was a complete failure, except as factitious evidence for trying to disprove the originality of subsequent inventions. An early and inadvertent use of the affinity of oil for metallic surfaces is suggested by the story of Jason and the Argonauts, who extracted gold from the gravel of the river Colchis by means of sheepskins. The woolly hide sewed, like the blankets used in our early stamp-mills, to arrest the gold, which was further detained by the oil on the fleece. Strabo, referring to a later period, says that in the country of the Soanes, who inhabit the valley of the Colchis, “the winter torrents are said to bring down even gold, which the barbarians collect in troughs pierced with holes, and lined with fleeces; and hence the fable of the Golden Fleece”.† William Pryce

A description of some of the magnetic ore-deposits in this region should be of interest to the mining and metallurgical public, inasmuch as very little has been said or written concerning them. I refer to the magnetite deposits of Franklin and Henry counties, Va., and of Stokes county, N. C. These deposits remained comparatively unexplored until recently, when the construction of the Roanoke & Southern R. R. through this territory has called attention to them, by furnishing the means of transportation for the ores. It is true that the ores have long been known, at least locally, and were smelted in catalan forges and old-fashioned, cold-blast charcoal-furnaces long before and during the late war. At the present time, however, the old workings are caved in, filled up and over-grown to such an extent that, as a rule, but little can be learned from them. No prospecting of any consequence has been done, and as my time was too limited and the territory to be examined too extensive to permit additional openings of a more satisfactory nature to be made, the incormpleteness of some of the data I have to offer (notably, those referring to the absolute width of the veins) will be pardoned. It will hardly be necessary to say that this ore-bearing formation belongs to the Archaean, or Eozoic age, the usually occurring rocks being schist, shale, gneiss, granite, sandstone and quartzite. The stratigraphy is, as a rule, quite regular (excepting in the Danbury section, Stokes county, N. C.), the general strike being northeast and southwest, and the dip nearly vertical. An underground excavation project usually is a highly organized complex of different but interrelated construction activities. It is the whole effort, including the necessary tools, which will be referred to as the System. Tunnel-driving and shaft-sinking operations are among the most systematic of construction efforts. Systems are not new in the performance of construction. It is the Systems Concept which seems only recently to have been discovered and made the subject of much study and discussion. HISTORICAL From the seventeenth century, when explosives were first utilized for rock excavation, until the successful application of the rotary-head continuous tunneler in this decade, the cyclical drill-blast-muck-support method has been standard tunnel-driving procedure throughout the world. Whatever improvements occurred were the result of development of better tools for performing the various operations of the cycle. The electric locomotive replaced the mule and permitted the use of larger muck cars. The steam drill, which ended the day of the double jack, was itself quickly made obsolete when compressed air replaced steam as the source of drilling energy. Power shovels were introduced to save the time and money involved in the hand-loading of excavated materials. A cubic yard of rock tunnel muck can be excavated today for just half the man-hours of labor required in 1948. Developments over 20 years which cumulatively have resulted in this economy include: drifter drills mounted on hydraulically controlled booms and positioners; tungsten-car- bide-tipped bits; long feed shells on the drifters, making it possible to drill the full depth of a round without changing steel; better designed,

AS a result of the study of social problems to which so much thought has been given in this country and Europe in the last half century, many employers of labor have come to think that some provision should be made for their workingmen in case of injury. There has been a growing tendency so to administer the laws governing industrial pursuits in these countries as to add self-interest on the part of capitalists, to the plea urged by humanity, that every possible care should be taken to guard the workers from accident; but as no care can guarantee immunity, there is a necessity to supplement these precautions by some method of providing pecuniary aid that shall be available when disabling accidents do occur. It was once a favorite idea of theorists on political economy, that in the ideal state of society every man should take care of himself, and that the less care or control there was assumed by any man over others' private affairs, the better; but this gospel of selfishness has had its day, and it is now generally recognized that in the existing state of affairs the stronger and richer cannot escape the duty of being to some extent, the keepers of their less fortunate brethren ; and, on the other hand, that an assumption of care for them involving to some extent an exercise of authority, is not a thing to he necessarily and always resisted. Out of these convictions, many efforts for the amelioration of the condition of workingmen have grown—which or one result have produced various plans which combine the con-

BLAUVELT, Anaconda, Mont.: Mr. Stetefeldt's comparison of the producer-plants at Aspen, Colorado, and Park City, Utah, is of special interest at this time, when the attention of all western metallurgists is so forcibly drawn to the necessity of reducing expenses and losses. The fact that wood was used at Park City before gas was introduced, for firing the Stetefeldt furnace and dryer, offered an excellent opportunity for showing the economies resulting from the adoption of gas in place of wood, as well as a comparison between the two gas-plants. Some time ago Mr. Stetefeldt contributed an article to one of the technical journals, in which the economy obtained by the substitution of gas for wood at this plant was shown quite in detail. I regret not being able to quote from his article at length, but, remember that the total saving effected would pay for the producer-plant in about one month. This is a striking instance of the advantages to be secured by the adoption of the best methods of using fuel in our metallurgical works. In comparing the figures from the Park City and Aspen plants, the difference of over 20 per cent. in the fuel used in the Stetefeldt furnaces, seems remarkable, even considering the larger amount of sulphur in the Aspen ore, and the greater rapidity with which it was roasted. It would be interesting to have Mr. Stetefeldt's, opinion as to the cause of so great a difference. The inferior economy of the revolving dryers at Park City might be overcome by lengthening them, or so arranging a second one above
