One of the operations of the J. L. Shiely Co. is quarrying in a hard granite gneiss with intrusions of gabbro or trap. During the winter of 1948-1949 the quarry ramp was lowered about 30 ft and during the 1949 season practically all drilling was done from the quarry floor, developing a face from 72 to 83 ft for the entire quarry area. The performance and cost table shows our record for 1948 and 1949.

The effects of crude oil cornponents on the wellabil-ities of sandstone and limestone were investigated. Fractions containing cornponents differing in molecular weight and molecular structure were obtained from crude oils by distillation, extration and chromatography. Individual fractions were then tested for their effects on rock wettability. Tests indicate that sundstone wetta-bility may he changed by a complex variety of surfactants varying both in molecular structure and molecular weight. Limestone appears to be particularly sensitive to basic, nitrogenous surfactants. INTRODUCTION Investigations in recent years have shown that petroleum reservoir rock wettability can exert a significant influence on the efficiency with which oil can be produced by water flooding. While most reservoirs are presumably water-wet, they niay range in their degree of water-wettability from near-neutral to strongly water-wet.'" Reservoir wettabilities other than strongly water-wet are likely to be induced by adsorption of surface-active components froni the crude oil on the pore walls of reservoir rock.:' Little is known, however, about the nature of the surface-active materials which are likely to be adsorbed by the reservoir rock. Due to the complexity of crude oils. attempts made in the past90 isolate these surface-active components have met with only limited success. It is probable that many different types of surface-active materials arc indigenous to crude oils and that many of these may be adsorbed to varying degrees by reservoir rock. This was cxolored in the studies discussed in this paper. The over-all objective in these studies is to ascertain whether the wettability of a given reservoir can be determined by examining the surfactant content of the reservoir crude. To this end, crude oils were examined to determine the variability of indigeneous surfactants with regard to chemical type and molecular weight. Crude oils were separated by distillation into fractions differing principally in molecular weight, by chroma-tography into fractions containing compounds differing in polarity, and by solvent extraction into nitrogenous and non-nitrogenous fractions. Individual fractions were then tested for their effects on the wettabilities of sandstone or limestone rock samples. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Fractionation of the Crude Oils Samples of Miocene, Eocene and Jurassic crudes were distilled at temperatures not exceeding 200°C. The final stages of distillation were completed in a molecular still at pressures down to three microns of mercury. Fifteen to 30 fractions were obtained from each crude oil. These cuts were sufficiently broad that separation can be considered to have been effected principally on the basis of the molecular weights of the constituents of the crude oil. A considerable portion (20 to 40 per cent) of the crudes would not distill under these conditions. The residues were recovered and tested with the other fractions. Fractions differing in polarity were separated from a crude of Pennsylvanian age and an extracted sample of Miocene oil by chromatography, using a solid adsorbent. Since surfactants are, for the most part, polar compounds, chromatography should separate many of the surfactants from the crude oil. Such a separation should provide fractions containing compounds differing in molecular structure. Nitrogeneous compounds were extracted from Miocene crude oil with a solution of sulfuric acid in meth-anol. The residual oil was further processed by chonia-tography. Each of the fractions obtained by thesc procedures was dissolved in a non-polar solvent (xylene) and diluted to its original concentration in the crude oil. No attempt was made to maintain an anaerobic atmosphere above the samples while they were being dissolved. These solutions of the fractions were then tested for their effects on the wettability of sandstone and limcstone as discussed in the next section. Measurement of the Effects of Crude Oil Fractions on Rock Wettability No entirely satisfactory method for measuring rock wettability has yet been developed. All methods used are empirical. The imbibition test was used in these studies. This test is based on the tendency of a rock to imbibe the wetting phase spontaneously. For example, if a strongly water-wet rock is first saturated with oil and then placed in water, the water will quickly invade the rock by capillarity and much of the oil will be displaced. If the rock is slightly water-wet, water irnbibition will proceed more slowly and, in many instances, considerably less oil will be displaced. A water-saturated, oil-wet rock will imbibe oil. The initial rate with which water (or oil) imbibition takes place indicates, qualitatively, the degree of water (or oil) wettability of the rock.

The purpose of this paper is to present the results of theoretical and experimental studies of water imbibition. The imbibition processes are involved in recovery of oil from stratified and fractured-matrix formations in natural water drives and water flooding. An understanding of the role of inhibition in implementing the recovery of oil from such formations is deemed essential to proper control of these reservoirs to achieve maximum recovery. The theoretical studies involved development of the differential equations which describe the spontaneous imbibition of water by an oil-saturated rock. The dependence of the rate of water intake by the rock on the permeability, interfacial tension, contact angles, fluid viscosities and fluid saturatiorls is discussed. A few experiments were performed using core samples to determine the effects of core length and presence of a free gas suturation. The role of water imbibition in recovery of oil from a fractured-matrix reservoir by water flooding was investigated by use of a laboratory model. This model was scaled to represent one element of a frac-tured-matrix formation. Water floods were made at various rates with several fracture widths. Interpretations were made of the behavior expected in a system containing many matrix blocks. The presence of a free gas sntu.ration was found to reduce the rate of water imbibition. In the reservoir prototype of the fractured-matrix model, water imbibition rather than direct displacement by water was the dominant mechanism in the recovery of oil at low rates. INTRODUCTION Imbibition may be defined as the spontaneous taking up of a liquid by a porous solid. The spontaneous process of imbibition occurs when the fuid-filled solid is immersed or brought in contact with another fluid which preferentially wets the solid. In the process of wetting and flowing into the solid, the imbibing fluid displaces the non-wetting resident fluid. Common examples of this phenomenon are dry bricks soaking up water and expelling air, a blotter soaking up ink and expelling air and reservoir rock soaking up water and expelling oil. As increasingly better lithological descriptions have been made of the characteristics of petroleum-bearing formations, it has become obvious that imbibition phenomena which were once considered laboratory curiosities are of practical importance. For instance, in reservoirs composed of water-wet sand strata of different permeability in intimate contact, the tendency of water to channel through the more permeable stratum is offset by the tendency for water to imbibe into the tight sand and expel oil into the coarse sand. Also, in fractured-matrix formations the tendency of water to channel through the fractures is offset by water-wet matrix blocks. As some imbibition of the water into the of the largest fields in the world are fractured-matrix reservoirs, it has become increasingly important to understand all the factors involved in the imbibition process. Examples of fractured-matrix reservoirs are the Spraberry field in West Texas which produces from a fractured sandstone', the giant Kirkuk field in Iran', the Dukhan field in Qatar, Persian Gulf2, and the Masjid-I-Sula-main and the Haft-Kel fields in Southwestern Iran, which produce from fissured limestone3. Research into recovery of oil from fractured-matrix formations was stimulated by the rapid decline of oil productivity of wells in the Spraberry formation. One result of this research was the water imbibition process developed by the Atlantic Refining Co.4 Another idea was that much of the Spraberry oil could be recovered by conventional water-flooding procedures5. Subsequently, pilot floods were conducted in this field to test the feasibility of these ideas. It was felt that an understanding of the role played by imbibition processes in displacement of oil from a fractured-matrix reservoir could not be obtained from field data alone because of the many complicating factors and uncertainties involved. Therefore, theoretical and laboratory studies were undertaken to provide this understanding. Study of the equations which describe the linear, countercurrent imbibition process provided an insight into the role of various factors in the process, such as the permeability of rock and inter-facial tension. In addition to the theoretical studies, imbibition experiments were conducted with core samples to determine the effect on the rate of imbibition of such variables as core length and free gas saturation. During the past 20 years. research and development in the study of reservoir behavior have dealt principally with flow of oil through sandstones. Many reservoir studies of sand fields have proved valuable in promoting recovery efficiency. This paper discusses fundamental principles governing oil and gas production from sandstone and limestone alike and presents the results of investigations relating to the application of analytical techniques used for sandstone reservoir studies to the study of limestone reservoir performance. The characteristics of limestone porous systems, porosity-permeability relationships, distribution and occurrence of oil, and characteristics of flow through such systems are discussed. Recognition is made of the similarities or differences which these factors exhibit in limestone and sandstone systems. Comparisons between operating data for typical limestone and sand reservoirs are presented. It is indicated that the distribution and movement of fluids in and through porous limestones follow the same fundamental principles underlying such processes in sandstones. This fundamental similarity may readily be discernible in the performance of many limestone reservoirs. The volumetric balance and unsteady state radial flow equation, the fluid displacement equation, use of electrical analogue devices, and other analytical techniques to study the behavior of limestone fields appear fundamentally applicable, but do require thorough understanding of the properties of the formation, of the fluids, their behavior during flow, and adequate production operating data. Need for more complete coring and comprehensive examination of core properties is stressed. The results of "active oil" studies, and of flow and interference tests are presented. Well spacing, well completion, and efficient rates of production in limestone reservoirs are briefly discussed. INTRODUCTION Limestone and dolomite reservoirs constitute the largest source of supply of crude oil in the world. an estimated 60 per cent of present production coming from carbonate reservoirs. In many large geologic provinces such as Mexico. the Middle East, and more recently Canada, almost all the oil is found in this type of rock. In the United States, all of the major oil-producing areas except California and Pennsylvania contain oil-bearing carbonate formations. The discovery in recent years of large oil reserves in the Silurian, Devonian, and Ordo-vician formations in West Texas, in addition to the large reserves in the Permian, has accentuated the interest of operators, geologists, and engineers in limestone formations and in the many problems associated with understanding the performance of these reservoirs. The rapid increase in discovery of oil in limestone formations and the present-day position of prominence held by these fields in the production and reserve picture in all parts of the world emphasize the horizons opened to the reservoir technologist in the field of geological and production research. Pertinent to an interpretation of the behavior of limestone reservoirs are the methods of analysis which may be utilized and a possession of full knowledge of the many factors which influence the analytical procedures. During the past 20 years a well-developed science of reservoir engineering has been built upon the research of many workers who studied the fundamental nature of oil reservoirs, characteristics of the porous media, properties and behavior of the contained fluids, and the mechanics of flow. Application of these studies to production practice has resulted in greater recoveries and more efficient field operation. The major portion of this evolutionary process has been founded upon studies of sand fields. The applicability of these more thoroughly developed techniques for studying sand fields to the study of the behavior of limestone fields becomes a factor of technical and practical significance. In the light of the technological background available to the reservoir analyst, this paper discusses fundamental principles governing oil and gas production from sandstone and limestone alike and presents the results of investigations relating to the application of analytical techniques used for sandstone studies to the study of limestone reservoir performance. LIMESTONE RESERVOIR CHARACTERISTICS The characteristics of limestone and sandstone reservoirs are similar in many respects and they both may occur under similar structural conditions. Fundamentally, the distribution and movement of fluids in and through the porous limestone media follow the same basic principles which dictate such processes in sandstones. Herein lies a fundamental similarity, which may readily be discernible in the performance of many limestone reservoirs. In some limestone fields, as in many sand fields, widely varying formation properties and distribution may reveal themselves in deviations in the performance of the reservoir, in the behavior of wells, and in fluid flow through the rock, and make difficult the delineation of reservoir behavior. Only by reservoir studies, core analyses, and coordinated laboratory and field experimentation can the effects of the many influencing factors upon the nature of limestone production be determined. FORMATION CHARACTERISTICS The chief difference between limestone and sandstone, aside from their chemical compositions, is the difference in the geometry and origin of the porous systems in the two kinds of rock. The fact that this latest and most modern of the Universal Atlas Cement Company's plants at Northampton, Pa., is the fifth to be built on these same properties, and their development has been coincidental with the development of the portland cement industry in the United States, makes it appropriate to sketch briefly the history of the successive steps. In 1889 the original Atlas Portland Cement Co. started its first plant at Coplay, Pa., which is just across the Lehigh River from the present operation. Here the first successful rotary kiln was operated. These kilns were 6 ft. in diameter and 60 ft. long; they used oil for fuel until 1895, when the company developed the first burner for pulverized coal. Shortly thereafter the Atlas company acquired property on the Northampton side of the river and built its plants Nos. 2, 3 and 4 within the following 10 years. During the same period the production of portland cement in the country was increasing rapidly; owing largely to the development of the rotary kiln and improved grinding machinery, which lowered the cost and improved the quality of cement. The general tendency has been to increase the length of the kiln and grind both raw material and finished product Liner. In 1930 the Atlas Portland Cement Co. and the Universal Portland Cement Co. united to form the Universal Atlas Cement Co., and the same policy of improving the product has been continued. Because of the large amount of research carried on by manufacturers and consumers, including government agencies, there is a demand for cement of different chemical and physical characteristics for different kinds of structures. Hence many engineers in recent years have been asking for cements of certain definite chemical analyses, which they think are best for their particular jobs. This has compelled the manufacturer to make several different types of cement by variations of chemical composition. These are generally made by adding silica, iron and lime to the standard mixture, which necessarily increases the cost of the product. Therefore the Universal Atlas Cement Co., in planning the modernization of its Northampton plant, gave this particular phase of the problem considerable study. Research and experimentation have developed the practicability of making a wide variety of differently proportioned raw materials for cement by a process of subtraction rather than by addition. With such process, it is possible to discard the undesirable aluminates and silicates from the ample supply of impure limestone available from the company's property rather than by adding high-grade limestone obtained from distant sources. This procedure requires mineral separation by centrifugal sedimentation and froth flotation. By completing a double-track railroad cut-off, involving a large volume of cut and fill, in addition to a half-mile bridge spanning an important French river, engineers in the zone of the Services of Supply have opened up a route by means of which hours of valuable time are being saved in transporting men and materials to combat areas. Its most valuable feature is that it provides a means for by-passing a certain city where several, French railroad lines converge and where, consequently, congestion of traffic has been responsible for delayed train movements. To avoid a double-track turnout, which would have involved a cross-over cutting one of the French tracks, the two track connections of the cut-off are taken off from opposite sides of the French right-of-way. This involved running one of the new lines of the cut-off out from the main line track on a fill to a point where it could be brought back and over the French track on a steel girder bridge. Beyond this bridge the two tracks of the cut-off converge and straighten out in the standard type of double-track construction. The new cut-off is about 5 3/4 mi. (9 km.) long and has required 160,000 cu. yd. of cut (122,329 cu. m.) and 414,000 cu. yd. (316,527 cu. m.) of fill. In the biggest continuous fill a-yardage of 180,000 has been placed; the road-bed in this section-being-about 40-ft. (12 m.) above the original ground surface. The bridge portion of the cut-off, 2190 ft. (667.5 in.) long, is made up of ninety-nine 14-ft. (4.3 m.) timber spans and sixteen 50-ft. (15.3 m.) steel girder spans. This is the longest bridge which engineers of the American Expeditionary Forces have built in France. The timber spans are supported by pile trestle bents, while the longer steel girders rest on clusters of 43 piles. Two pile drivers of the steam-hammer type worked from each -end of the bridge toward the center of the river, while a drop hammer worked westward from the shore end. In this structure nearly two thousand piles 50 ft. or so in length had to be driven.

IN THE December issue of MINING AND METALLURGY, attention was drawn to the February meeting of the Institute. The plans of the Committee on Arrange-ments have progressed considerably since that date, so that further announcements may now be made. The Mining Methods Committee has definitely arranged for at least three sessions. One of these will be devoted to a discussion of various methods used in sampling large low-grade ore deposits; a second will have for its leading subject underground transportation and mining practice as developed by the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., and the third will be devoted to the coal industry, particularly in reference to the percent-age of economic recovery under various conditions. The Mining Methods Committee will also hold a committee meeting, which will be open to all members, for the purpose of a discussion in reference to the symposium on mining methods which it proposes to hold at an early meeting. The Petroleum and Gas Committee is planning a two-day symposium. A tentative program was printed in the November number of MINING AND METALLURGY, and this, with a few changes, still indicates the plans of the committee. E. L. DeGolyer, vice-chairman of the committee, says Mining engineers and geologists should make every effort to attend the February meeting and hear the symposiums on foreign oil possibilities which have been arranged by the Petro-leum and Gas Committee of the Institute. No such comprehen-sive consideration of this subject as that planned has previously been attempted. This matter is extremely important to all persons who are users of petroleum or its products, and in our present civilization this classification includes every individual, but it is particularly important to the engineer who directs the production and use of power on a large scale. The United States produces currently about two-thirds of the world's oil but consumes more than it produces. We must look .to outside areas for part at least of our petroleum requirements and the future market, because even American oil will be influ-enced largely by the ease and freedom with which this outside supply may be secured. It is important to you to know something of foreign prospects and conditions under which they may be developed.

The authors present an interesting review of various applications of rather well known theories. Their rearrangement of the original working equations is strictly computer oriented and serves well to that effect; however, the new appearance will be confusing to the slide rule-wielding members of the profession. In reviewing discrepancies existing between calculations made by Baker Oil Tools, Inc. field engineering staff members and computer output submitted based on the authors' program, the following error in concept was discovered in Eq. 4. The authors quote the length change due to helical buckling in the following form We appreciate Kurt Leutwyler's awareness of Archimedes' principle, and concur that the final term in the denominator of Eq. 4 results in a small error. Examples checked revealed less than I ft error, and corrective expressions for the four possibilities of displacement follow. The portion of the denominator within extra large brackets represents the original term W,, = weight of outside fluid displaced per unit length. The authors interpreted the expression "displaced" in general oilfield terminology as a fluid displacement, such as "mud displaced with water, etc." A review of the theory forming the basis for these helical buckling calculations discloses that this displacement is meant to be interpreted in the Archimedean sense, i.e., fluid displaced by the solid body. here the tubing and the seal nipple. Lubinski* illustrated the point by summing moments due to mechanical and hydraulic forces acting on a free body immersed in fluid. This moment summation, always in the Archi,medean sense, yields effects of the real forces, including W,, and the fictitious force on the bending mechanism. I would be interested to hear the authors' comments regarding this theoretical point, which nevertheless is not mute since its lack of recognition seems to result in erroneous calculations. We must not remain mute to Leutwyler's suggestion that these equations, although computer oriented, are confusing to the slide rule engineers. Such input information as density in pounds per gallon, pipe diameters in inches, pumping rate in barrels per minute and pipe length in feet is not confusing to most of us. Yet there may be some rugged individuals in field positions who carry tables of conversion constants and have committed to memory such items as coefficients of thermal expansion and Poisson's ratio; however, even this type of individual would welcome a simplified equation occasionally. M

With the inauguration of Petroleum Technology this year, and approval by the Board to add an Assistant Secretary to the New York staff to serve the Petroleum and Coal Divisions, the Petroleum Division looks forward to greater opportunities and responsibilities. An improved medium of publication offers further incentive to engineers and investigators in the oil industry to make contributions. The authorization by the Board of Directors of a new Assistant Secretary is an appreciation of the splendid contributions made to the industry by the open forum of the Petroleum Division. It is also a recognition of the possibilities of greater service to the membership along the lines established ten to fifteen years ago by DeGolyer, Fohs, Ambrose and Lovejoy, to mention a few leaders. It isexpected that the new officer will spend a substantial part of his time in the field, visiting the student sections, the respective Divisions, helping in the arrangement of papers and Section meetings and intensifying interest in the Institute. The Petroleum Division will hold three meetings this year. The Fall Meetings will be held on Oct. 6 and 7 in San Antonio and on Oct. 20 and 21 in Los Angeles. The programs for these meetings will deal chiefly with engineering research and production engineering problems. Papers on production statistics and general economics of the industry are reserved for the Annual Meeting in New York. The annual production symposium and statistics are accepted as standard for the industry. With continuously deeper penetration into the earth in search for and exploitation of petroleum, it is necessary to have a better understanding of reservoir conditions and to place more phases of the operation under engineering control. Among the subjects relating to reservoir conditions tha thave been proposed for the fall meeting programs are phase equilibria at high pressures, interfacial tension between oil and water, the flow of oil and water through sands, the chemistry of films and underground temperatures. Investigations relating to control of operations include methods of continuously logging while drilling both visually and electrically, methods of studying drilling samples, properties of drilling fluids, improved cementing practices for isolating thin sands under high-temperature conditions and gas conservation, particularly production from high-pressure reservoirs. Additional suggestions of general themes or individual subjects will be welcomed, since it is desirable to build a backlog of material for Petroleum Technology. 9

IN my address on the " Geognostical Relations of the Metals," delivered before the Institute on the 20th of February last (Vol. I Transactions, p. 331), I spoke of the rocks in the vicinity of Thunder Bay, Lake Superior, where I indicated two series of uncrystalline rocks resting upon the Huronian schists, the lower one consisting of dark-colored argillites and sandstones overlaid, apparently in slight discordance, by nearly horizontal red and white sandstone and marls, which were compared with those of Sault Ste. Marie, and those of the Portage Lake district, on the south shore. These latter sand-stones, according to Brooks and Pumpelly, overlie unconformably the Keweenaw series of copper-bearing amygdaloids, sandstones, and conglomerates, and are in turn overlaid by the Trenton limestone. I then proposed to call this lower series of Thunder Bay, that is to say, the dark-colored argillites and sandstones which are traversed by the silver-bearing lodes of that region, the Animikie group. Shortly after the publication of that address I received an abstract of a paper on the geology of that region by Professor Robert Bell, read before the Montreal Natural History Society, February 24th. He there confirms the statement made in my address that the gold of Lake Shebandowan occurs in the Huronian, which is also seen to be cut by the silver-bearing lodes just mentioned. Professor Bell, in this paper, proposes to designate both what I have called the Animikie group, and the overlying red and white sandstones, by the name of the Nepigon group, for the reason that the upper series is best displayed about Lake Nepigon. This latter series is by Logan supposed to be overlaid by the copper-bearing amygdaloids with conglomerates and sandstones of the north shore (apparently identical with those of Keweenaw) ; and the whole together, including the Animikie group, constitute his Upper Copper-bearing group. These copper-bearing strata are by him supposed to be overlaid by the red and white sandstones of St. Mary, which are apparently the same with those sandstones which, according to Brooks and Pumpelly, overlie unconformably the similar cupriferous rocks of Portage Lake, and are, in their turn, overlaid by the Trenton limestone. As is well known, cast-iron borings are a mixture of small particles of iron with more or less of finely divided graphite, separated from thc surfaces of these small particles during the process of boring. The amount of graphite thus mechanically mixed is, in all cases, quite large enough to cause serious difficulty when the problem is to obtain an average sample of a given lot of borings for carbon determination. This difficulty arises from the necessity of obtaining a uniform mixture of the heavy and comparatively coarse borings with the finely divided and light graphite, and of removing a sample for analysis without disturbing the uniformity of this mixture. It was first sought to overcome this difficulty by having the horings made very fine, so that they might have more nearly the size of the particles of graphite. It was not practicable, however, to secure this uniformity of size, since much of the graphite is in the form of the finest dust. At all events, the duplicate determinations of rarbon in these fine borings, made with every precaution by combustion in oxygen, frequently showed differences too large to be accounted for in arty other way than by imperfect sampling. Very coarse borings were also tried with the idea that the graphite separated from these large and heavy pieces would perhaps be inappreciable ; but it was found that quite enough was separated to vitiate the results. Various methods of mixing were tried, both in the bottle and on glazed paper ; but in all these mixtures it mas found that duplicate samples seldom colitained the same proportion of the mechanically mixed graphite; and when they did, there could be no certainty that it was the true proportion. All this was shown many times over by the failure of duplicates to agree closely, the differencheing sometimes so much as 0.20 per cent. It was finally clear that nothing was to be hoped from these methods. Even if we could secure a perfect mixture containing in every part its due proportion of graphite, it would run a great risk of being destroyed the moment a spatula was inserted to remove a sample: for the least agitation causes some of the graphite to fall through between the coarser borings.

Economic law was accorded considerably more recognition by the oil industry last year than perhaps ever before. While proration was undoubtedly given added impetus in 1931, and the list of proponents of unit operation was noticeably lengthened, predominant evidence plainly shows that the functioning of economic laws dominated collective efforts to reduce the excessive above-ground supply of petroleum. Crude oil production was reduced more than 48,000,000 bbl. last year; imports from other parts of the world were substantially lower; stocks of crude were drawn upon to the extent of nearly 48,000,000 bbl.; domestic gasoline demand increased 2 per cent—and yet, prices of petroleum and its products were at the lowest levels in many years. To say that the ills of the oil industry during 1931 were due to the general depression that was felt in all other lines is tantamount to attaching an air of uncertainty to a group of commodities that have been proved to be an ever increasing necessity, even in times of depression. TO say that the potential productivity of proven oil-producing areas has been responsible for the unsatisfactory state of affairs last year, and now, is to admit failure to carry out the principles designed to control production in accordance with the limits prescribed by demand. In fact, there is no reason why a large proven potential supply of oil should not be considered a valuable asset to the industry; an assurance against future needs; a stabilizing influence in building up confidence in the ability of the industry to supply this and future generations with fuel and lubricant requirements at reasonable prices. At any rate, an assured future supply of oil should be interpreted to the public to mean that the oil industry is a legitimate, progressive industry, and not a group of prospectors madly searching for "liquid gold." There has been a great deal of romance connected with the history of the oil business—so much that the public has come to associate the word "oil" with untold riches. However, the financial statements of 1931 will furnish conclusive proof to the contrary. Too much oil, too many refineries, too many filling stations, too much capital invested; these and other "too muches" and "too manys" have perhaps been given more publicity than necessary. IT IS increasingly evident that the excellence of blast-furnace operation to a great extent depends upon the preparation of the products fed into the furnace. The preparation of these products is carried on largely in the roasting and sintering departments. Prior to the building of flotation plants in Utah and other western states for the treatment of lead-zinc ores, the gravity concentrates received at the Midvale smelter amounted to about 4000 tons per month, containing 24 per cent. lead and 10 or 11 per cent. zinc. This product was about 20 mesh-that is, 45 per cent. of it would be plus 20 mesh and the balance minus 20 mesh. About 1000 tons of pyrite per month, containing 5 per cent. lead and 10 per cent. zinc, was also received. These products were sent to the multiple-hearth roasters for calcining, after which they were sent to the Dwight-Lloyd machines for sintering with other ores. The sintering charge passed over the machines but once. The first flotation products received consisted of a wet, sticky, muddy mass, containing a large amount of moisture, up to 19 or 20 per cent., and it was almost impossible to feed .them with any degree of regularity, if at all, through our standard feeders; but the amount of flotation product received during the first year or so was relatively small and it virtually lost its identity by being mixed with a large amount of jig and table concentrates. As the quantity of flotation products increased, more efficient filtering was accomplished and the moisture greatly reduced. FLOTATION PRODUCTS RECEIVED At the present time the Midvale plant receives about 4300 tons per month of flotation product running 60 per cent. lead and 4.5 per cent. zinc, 85 per cent. of which is minus 200 mesh and contains about 8 per cent. moisture; and 4000 tons per month of pyrite of similar fineness, running about 2 per cent. lead and 3.5 per cent. zinc, containing about 10 per cent. moisture. The lower moisture greatly reduces the difficulties of handling, making it possible to run a 100 per cent. flotation feed on a multiple-hearth furnace without serious mechanical troubles. During the year 1878-79, Anton Eilers, who was then interested in the lead smelting and refining business near Salt Lake City, Utah, made a somewhat radical departure from the regular practice at that time, which was to use but little lime in the slag, with a high percentage of iron. Lime was not only a cheaper flux than iron, but it enabled the metallurgist to make a more siliceous slag, an economical advantage in smelting where the smelting companies had to purchase either iron or lime to neutraiize the excess silica, and penalize the ore shippers accordingly. The larger amount of both lime and silica in the slag also made it of lighter specific gravity, and a better separation of the metals and mattes was secured. This change in the formation of slags for lead smelting was brought about by Anton Eilers, prior to the Leadville mining excitement of 1879.. We must also give Mr. Eilers credit for the general introduction of the hollow water-cooled cast-iron jacket for the blast furnace. Again referring to the use of more lime and less iron in the formation of slags, there is no doubt but that it prevents the formation of a great many so-called "sows" in the lead crucible, such as were made in the early history of lead smelting in the Rocky Mountains; these sows consisted of lead, iron, arsenic, sulphur, copper, and other metals, including gold and silver, mixed with unconsumed fuel, and often, after vain attempts to cut them up or melt them to a suitable size for handling, were buried in the slag dumps to get them out of sight. Another advantage derived from the adoption of high-lime slags when smelting ore containing arsenic is the production of less speiss (a byproduct heavier than matte, resulting from careless operation of the furnace, in the lead being driven out of the crucible and sows built up). This speiss, while usually not as rich in precious metals as matte made at the same time, is too valuable to be thrown away; but it is difficult to treat, and it was thrown away or piled on the slag dumps in the pioneer days of lead smelting in this country. RESEARCH is defined, scientifically, as a "sys- tematic investigation of some phenomenon, and also a search for hidden treasures." Chemists tell us that the hidden treasures of petroleum are far richer than the .products which have been best known to us. However, these secrets will be discovered only through intensive and systematic, as well as scientific, industrial research. Indeed, the scope of the subject is so great that such an intensive research program should be assumed by a centralized organization supported by the petroleum industry as a whole. Such organization would assume the responsibilities for investigation of new products and development of markets for such products. Gasoline, the chief product of the petroleum industry, has become a cheap commodity. The continual un-controlled overproduction of crude petroleum, the in-tensive competitive condition in the marketing of petro-leum products and the increase of refining efficiency and installing of cracking facilities, have all combined to lower the market value of gasoline. The lower cost of gasoline has all been passed on to the purchaser in the form of lower prices so that today the most important product can scarcely be manufactured at a profit. In other fields, manufacturing industries have diversified their products when faced by a similar situation. Thus, they have been able to widen their marketing outlook. Why cannot the petroleum industry employ the same tactics ? Right now we are hearing much discussion concerning the development of a wider market for existing petro-leum products and new products for existing or prospec-tive markets. For instance, we can cite recent develop-ments for use of propane, butane, and ethylene. Butane has been found to be an efficient and inexpensive re-frigerant, especially adapted to home refrigerating sys-tems. Propane and butane fractions of natural gasoline may be shipped under pressure and may be used as a substitute for acetylene in cutting torches in connection with oxygen. There is a possibility of substituting butane for gas oil in the carbureting of coal gas, as we know that butane contains practically the gas enrich-ment as the same volume of gas oil and should prove to be a superior product for this function. Ethylene, a hydrocarbon present in cracked gases, is finding an outlet for the artificial ripening of green fruits. The following table . shows the more general use of petro-leum products as now established.

CADWALLADER EVANS JR. has long been a leading figure in the anthracite mining industry and one of Pennsylvania's prominent citizens. He is, in fact, a native son, having been horn in Pittsburgh on Sept. 17, 1880. At Lehigh, from which he graduated in 1901 with the degree of Mechanical Engineer, Tom Girdler was a classmate, and both were active in football affairs. Going hack to Pittsburgh, he got his first job as trouble shooter for the Oliver Iron & Steel Co. A year later he entered the coal industry, getting a job with the Blaine Coal Co. as inspector of construction and later was superintendent of the Blaine mine at Elizabeth. Pa.

DURING the Revolutionary War an iron mining industry was born in the Adirondack region of New York State. New York State ores provided the iron from which were forged the links of the chain that, strung across the Hudson River, successfully kept British vessels from ascending. The industry flourished for a while and then became dormant. For the successful prosecution of World War II, the magnetite mines were revived and given considerable aid in the form of government financial support. The complete story appeared in a special issue Of MINING AND METALLURGY published in November 1943. Now, almost four years later, it is interesting to see that these "war babies" were not really such but are well-established enterprises with a bright future. A ten-day trip through the Adirondack region and to St. Lawrence County dispelled all thoughts that mining in northern New York State is a transitory industry. In addition to substan-
