WALLACE MCKEEHAN, Douglas, Ariz. (communication to the Secretary*).-In going over this report, which I have done very carefully, I find that the summary as composed deals with the various problems almost entirely from the employer's standpoint and that practically no consideration is given to the employee's point of view. An experience of 3 ½ years as safety inspector, and almost 30 years as workman-and official, has convinced me that any plan for the betterment of working conditions which will achieve any degree of success must give the workmen their share of responsibility and allow them full participation. The company may finance and direct the movement, but its ultimate success depends upon the support given by the workmen. The cooperation of the men doing the actual work is so essential that all writers insist that this must he secured, but they do not agree as to how this can best be done.

B. S. Crocker (Screened Ore Used for Fine Grinding at Lake Shore Mines, P. 499) was born in Toronto, Ont. and attended Saint Andrews College and University of Toronto. He received a B.A. and M.A. degree. He was graduated with honors and received a fellowship in metallurgy. Mr. Crocker did post-graduate research at University of Toronto from 1933 to 1934. He was employed by Beattie Gold Mines in 1933. He did research in milling at Lake Shore Mines from 1934 to 1936 and from 1936 to 1940 was head of experiment laboratory. At the present time he is mill superintendent with Lake Shore Mines at Kirkland Lake, Ont., Canada. Grinding, cyanidation, flotation and roasting are of special interest to him. He is a member of AIME. Mr. Crocker has presented several papers before C.I.M.M. and also holds membership in this society as well as Professional Engineers of Ontario. Skiing, yacht racing and photography are his favorite hobbies.

In this section it is proposed to discuss operating methods considered good practice under the various field conditions commonly encountered. Efficient field direction and types of equipment needed to meet transportation problems are considered only to the extent that the desire to produce the best possible records must sometimes give way to the factor of cost. As in all engineering projects, alternative possible methods of operation must be considered in the light of relative costs as well as of the quality of results obtained, Cost may be in the background of much that is done in the field operations, but only the effect on record quality will be considered here. Record quality at a particular shot point may vary with the various factors of spread character (relative positions of geophones and shot point), shot-hole depth, formations opposite position of shot, size of charge, the effect of repeat shots, surface geology and culture in the immediate vicinity of the geophones, recorder instrument characteristics, particularly filter.

A typical problem in applied rock mechanics is an accurate prediction of support requirements for deep rock cuts. This paper presents experience with this problem as obtained from excavations for a powerhouse at the Pine Flat Dam near Fresno, California. The project, sponsored by the Kings River Conservation District is still under construction. Highly jointed and weathered rock was discovered during initial excavation. Wedge failures along clay filled joints and bedding planes presented potential support problems. Detailed mapping of joints and beds was undertaken to establish basic patterns of all rock discontinuities including mean orientations and an estimate of orientation variations. Rock bolting patterns were devised to meet these patterns as excavation proceeded. Shear friction angles across joints and beds were estimated from rock wedge fallouts. Friction angles as low as 27º were identified on highly weathered joints. Weathering strongly influenced stability conditions. Examples of bolting patterns to stabilize critical slopes are presented.

During a mine fire or other emergency, it may be desirable to reverse the air flow in order to provide an escapeway or to control a fire. Also, in colder areas, the air flow may be reversed to prevent ice build-ups. When reversing main mine fans, the operator usually does not know what operating characteristics of flow and pressure to expect. Laboratory testing of vane axial main mine fans has been completed in order to establish forward and reverse performance characteristics under controlled conditions, with the results presented here. Preliminary tests under field conditions have also been conducted. The data obtained suggest that reverse performance characteristics are dependent upon the blade angle and the hub to tip ratio. There is also evidence that reverse performance can he predicted for a family of blade angles in a given hub to tip ratio. In general, the air quantity delivered by the fan is 30% to 60% less in reverse than when operating in the normal forward mode.

THIS paper presents the essentials of a mathematical method of studying the pressure behavior of an oil reservoir as the fluids are withdrawn. Methods are shown whereby the behavior of a reservoir can be used to predict the future relationship between withdrawals and pressure. The oil reservoir is considered as a small part of a large porous continuum, which contains for the most part water. The expansion of this water resulting from a decrease of pressure in the oil zone causes a movement of water that is an important factor in the relationship between fluid withdrawals and reservoir pressure. Examples are given to illustrate the methods of pressure prediction for a circular reservoir containing undersaturated crude, the pressure distribution over a field that has a uniform production rate, the effect of a fault line near a field, the mutual interference of near-by fields, and the perturbing influence of a gas cap. Applications of the analysis to sell-spacing problems are shown.

The elements of a mill matrix and the classifier matrix de- scribing the grinding process depend on operating conditions, especially on the feed rate. Relationships between the matrix elements and the feed rate have a great influence on the stability of a closed circuit and its optimum point. These problems have been studied by means of computer simulation and different kinds of classifier characteristics have been considered. A circuit with a cross stream classifier has only a limited range where stable operation condition can be attained. Beyond the stable limit, the recirculation ratio increases rapidly and there is no correlation between feed rate of the circuit and feed rate of the mill. In comparison, a spiral stream classifier gives a wide range of stable operation. The recirculation ratio can be greater than in the case of the cross stream classifier if the feed rate is small. The results of the simulation provide a better understanding of the real behavior of closed circuit grinding.

Electrostatic separation of ores in its present form is generally known as the Huff process, from the name of Charles H. Huff, of Boston, Mass., through whose constant and persistent labors (with the invention of Clinton E. Dolbear as a basis) the successful commercial process embracing separative machinery and the various electrifying devices has been developed step by step, and the finances for the long period of development provided, and the method finally established and recognized throughout the world as an important and successful addition to the ore-dressing department of metallurgy. The permanent field-success of electrostatic separation began in 1908 with a 20-ton Huff experimental mill built specially for the purpose by the American Zinc, Lead & Smelting Go., in Platterille, Wis., a plant which was a success from the start and was gradually increased in capacity as the market-conditions warranted to 100 tons of concentrates per day. The Pittsburgh coal-region, if we regard the greatness of its extent, the picturesque beauty of its scenery, the salubrity of its climate, its relative situation on the Continent, the fertility of its soil, its unrivalled mineral wealth, and its magnificent system of natural transportation, is, perhaps, the most valuable spot on the surface of the planet. Unlike the mythical Paradise inhabited by one man and one woman, it swarms with an abounding population, not living on the free gifts of nature without care and without toil, hut expending its energies in unremitting labor, reinforced by the most elaborate machinery, in the production of everything which mankinds needs or desires; and unlilte the Paradise of story from which flowed the four great rivers of the world in opposite directions, its own four rivers How from the surrounding world into it, to constitute by their union the great highway water-course which divides the Northern from the Southern States. These rivers are the Monongahela, coming from the south, the Yonghiogheny from the southeast, the Kiskiminetas from the east, and the Allegheny from the north. Uniting at the great city of pittsburgh, they constitnte the Ohio, which flows northwest and west, and then south and southwest, toward the Mississippi. The Monongahela has been made navigable by a system of dams and pools the Allegheny was navigable in its natural condition; the KisKiminetas was made navigable by a State canal which has been vacated ; and the Youghiogheny remains unnavigable. Railroads supplement the deficiencies of the rivers, follow their hanks, and share in the transportation for which the waters are not sufficient. Railroads and rivers concentrate at Pittsburgh; other railroads cross the highlands to the east and west; and branch roads ascend the side-valleys and ravines to the mines on the uplands. The whole region is a scene of life; towns and villages dot its surface in all directions ; hundreds of gangways open upon the sides of all the valleys, and deliver coal to trains of cars which move beneath them at water-level; furnaces and rolling-mills abound; hundreds of oil-wells furnish a flood of liquid fuel to pipe-lines

Continuous thickeners can be sized from previous experience, continuous pilot-scale test results, or batch settling tests. It is relatively simple to size full-scale thickeners when previous experience or pilot-scale operating data are available. But batch testing is often the only realistic method for sizing thickeners due to time restrictions, budget limitations, and availability of sample material. Many authors have, therefore, suggested means of running batch tests and analyzing the resulting data. Fundamental thickening theory began with the work of Coe and Clevenger (1916). In order to determine the size of the thickener settling area, they proposed that a series of batch settling tests be run at various initial concentrations. The solids handling capacity at each concentration can then be determined and the lowest capacity (maximum area requirements) used to size the thickener. Kynch (1952) developed a mathematical analysis in which the relationship between solids concentration and settling rate can be obtained from a single batch settling curve. Observation of the clinkering action of coal from the Castle Gate D seam in underfeed stokers over a period of years has given rise to the present investigation of the effect of bony coal on clinkering. Some very costly examples of slagging clinkers in particular cases have been of especial interest to the authors. In such cases coal analyses and ash-softening and fluid temperatures have been found of little value. In general, it was noted that slagging mas accompanied by a somewhat higher ash content of the stoker slack, and the suspicion naturally arose that foreign matter was the troublemaker. One would naturally suspect bony coal and rock impurities because of their occurrence and prevalence within the seam and the relative absence of sulphur or other impurities in the coal mined. The test results given herein indicate that the concentration of the bony coal and rock impurities in the coal determines the clinkering tendencies of the ash during combustion. Castle Gate D Seam Extending from the Utah-Colorado line near Grand Junction, Colo., westward to Greenriver, Utah, and thence in semicircular form north and westward to Castle Gate, and from there southward to Mt. Hilgard in central Utah, is a line of nearly perpendicular cliffs, composed of interbedded massive sandstone and shales, making up the coal-bearing horizon of the Mesaverde formation of Upper Cretaceous age. The cliffs face roughly concentrically toward the south and southeast and the strata, with conformably enclosed coal beds, gently dip away from the face of the cliffs and at right angles to their front line. Back of these cliffs the mountain masses rise to an altitude of from 8000 to 10,ooo ft. above sea level. Stretching away from their foot is a great shale plain, on which the towns are situated and over which the railroad lines and highways run. The Castle Gate mines enter the coal beds at their outcrop; the workings extending within a particular coal bed away from the outcrop and under the mountain mass back from the cliff line (Fig. I). Throughout the Mesaverde formation in the Castle Gate general area, there are from two to five workable coal beds. Usually not all of these are coincidentally of workable size and merchantable quality throughout any given large tract. In the Castle Gate mine area, the base of the Mesaverde horizon and coal measures is marked by a massive, cliffmaking, gray sandstone bed 60 to 80 ft. thick. Locally this is referred to as the "Castle Gate sandstone floor." Frank R. Clark, in U. S. Geol. Survey Bull. 793, designates it as the "Aberdeen sandstone." At Castle Gate the various coal beds are designated by the letters A, B, C, etc., commencing with the lowest bed.

The purpose of this paper is to present data that have been obtained during the past two years concerning the effects of prior cold-work and temperature and time of anneal upon the recrystallization and grain growth of 70-30 cartridge brass. It was desirable to study certain of these phases so that an accurate picture of the principles of the subject could be shown. The work is not intended to provide explicit annealing data, but to provide material examples that may help to clarify analogous problems concerning this alloy. Specifications often set limitations upon the grain size of annealed materials because of the importance of grain size upon subsequent manufacturing operations. It was, therefore, worth while to study the variables that affect the recrystallized grain size of this material. C. H. Mathewson and A. Phillips,l W. R, Webster,2 and others have presented annealing characteristic curves of this alloy. A recent typical curve presented by R. S. Pratt3 is shown in Fig. I. The tensile properties and grain sizes are shown as functions of the annealing temperature. Such curves serve as a useful guide in determining the physical properties of annealed material, but as they are made generally under carefully controlled laboratory conditions they do not indicate the performance of metal annealed in a mill muffle, where such conditions as amounts of metal, heating time and temperature may differ. Study of the effect of time and temperature upon grain growth and subscquent recrystallization was made with a coil of metal having the following analysis: 70.04 per cent copper; 0.007 lead; 0.007 iron; 0.00 tin; 0.00 silicon; 0.001 nickel; 0.000 phosphorus; balance zinc. The sample coil was obtained from metal that had been rerolled from hot-rolled mill stock, and was received at 0.228-in. gauge, soft, with a grain size of 0.125 mm. This material was then rolled 43.5 per cent to 0.129-in. gauge and annealed to a 0.053-mm. grain size. In this condition, samples were cut and used in all of the experimental work reported in this paper. Time The first study was of crystal growth at a constant temperature over a moderate length of time. Material was cut from the stock coil at 0.129-in. size and rolled 75 per , cent hard to 0.032-in. gauge. From this piece small samples were cut M by 2 in., suitable for grain-size determina.tions. Twelve samples were placed in an electric furnace uniformly across the width, approximately an inch from the floor. A thermocouple was wired to the center sample, so that the approximate metal temperature could be followed. At various

ALL previous records were broken by the Iron and Steel Division, in the number of sessions, the number of papers, and the attendance. In addition to ten papers (all preprinted) on properties, structure, aid hardenability of, carbon and alloy steels, eight formal papers were presented on one or more phases of steelmaklng, and a symposium on the determination of hydrogen and nitrogen in steel. This last started at 2 p.m. and was going strong with more than a third of the audience still present at 6 p.m.

MR. JORALEMON'S dispassionate discussion of this subject in TECHNICAL PUBLICATION 340 of the Institute shows clearly some of the failures and successes of geology in the discovery of ore deposits. He forces us to recognize, with humility, that chance has played a greater part than geology in the recent discovery of several great copper deposits. I think, however, he wrongly ascribes to unexpected or chance discovery some deposits that were found as a direct result of geological investigation. I refer to the Rhodesian copper deposits,, particularly Roan Antelope and Mufulira, both mentioned by him as having been found by chance. Also,. I think Mr. Joralemon's paper, inadvertently, does not- give the proper credit for the early recognition of the possibilities of these deposits. I feel sure that Mr. Joralemon and the gentlemen given credit by him will welcome any further information on this subject that will throw light on what will some day- be of. historical interest and importance. Consequently, I should like to set forth some additional data that throw light on who should receive the most credit, and' to indicate that, in my opinion, sound. geological reasoning and not chance is to be, credited for the development of the. Roan Antelope and Muf ulira mines.

CHAIRMAN DOUGHTON of the House Ways and Means Committee announced on September 23 that the committee has scheduled public hearings on an excess-profits tax, beginning on November 15, 1950. In the meantime, the staff of the Joint Committee on Internal Revenue Taxation and the staff of the Treasury Department are to confer jointly on this question in the hope that such conferences may result in the preparation of a report on excess-profits tax proposals which could be used as a basis for testimony before the committee. It is thought that this procedure may aid in the draft of an excess-profits tax bill for introduction in the House when Congress reconvenes on November 27.

The development reported in this paper was begun by the author a number of years ago, while he was a lecturer on complex chemistry and metallurgy at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and in charge of that institution's research laboratory. Completion of the development and reduction to practice did not occur until last year at the Westport mill, laboratories and testing plant of the Dorr Company, where this method is now in general use for identifying and localizing the mineral constituents of both metallic and nonmetallic ores. It has proved to be a practical tool of the metallurgical staff at the Westport mill, devising unusual milling flowsheets for complex and refractory ore bodies. In a number of instances the findings have been successfully used as fundamental factors in the design and specification of complete metallurgical plants. Seven examples of the use of this method in solving practical milling problems are included in this paper. General Outline The microscopic study of an ore, at first only of scientific interest, has proved extremely useful both in practical geology and in ore dressing. The binocular magnifying lenses for rough observation of the products of an ore-dressing plant have been in use for a long time; but only within the last few years has a systematic microscopical examination of ore samples become a normal tool of any research laboratory dealing with ore-dressing problems. Such an investigation avoids considerable loss of time as well as empirical trials and useless experimentation. It will generally indicate the correct grinding and often will suggest the proper method of treatment. . The petrographic determination of transparent minerals in thin sections, or even in grains, has been perfected, and very accurate methods have been devised to meet any requirement, such as Feodorof's rotating stage on the petrographic microscope. Almost all transparent minerals can be positively identified by their optical properties; i.e., isotropism, anisotropism, color, pleochroism, refractory index, cleavage, crystal form, birefringence, and others. The identification of opaque minerals is a much more difficult problem and can be done only by using polished specimens. Unfortunately, most of the valuable metallic ores, and even some of the nonmetallic ones, are not transparent; therefore it has been necessary to develop a special technique for the determination of these minerals. Some optical properties—for instance, isotropism, anisotropism, color, cleavage, reflecting power-—are often adequate in roughly classifying the mineral. Only "reflecting power" is a measurable value, provided special photometric equipment (ocular photometer or Orcel's photoelectric cell) is available.
