IN this paper I propose to give a short and, I must confess, a rather incomplete description, as regards many details, of the process used in Chicago, Ill., for smelting the argentiferous ores of the far West, and shall confine myself in this description, principally, to the process used at the Chicago Silver Smelting and Refining Company's Works, known as the Balbach process, as all the other smelting works in that city follow the same method, with the exception of one, which has the Cordurié, process for the desilverization of argentiferous lead. In all, there are five silver smelting and refining works in and near the city of Chicago. The Chicago Silver Smelting and Refining Company's Works are situated at the little station of South Lynne, about seven miles south from Chicago. The plant at these works consists of one horizontal steam-engine, principally used for running the ore pulverizer, four reverberatory smelting-furnaces, connected by horizontal flues with a common chimney 85 feet high, three lead-softening furnaces, one so-called zinc or mixing furnace, one separating furnace or liquation hearth, one lead-refining furnace, three zinc distillation retorts, one English cupellation furnace, supplied with blast by a No. 3 Sturtevant blower, which is run by a small steam-engine having a vertical tubular boiler, and an assay office, in which there are two wind-furnaces of the ordinary construction, and also a small muffle furnace. The assay office is supplied with all the necessary apparatus and reagents for fire assaying. There are also a superintendent's office, various store-rooms for coke and charcoal, and for the preparation of fire-clay, etc. Recently a small slag hearth (Krummofen) with one tuyere, has been put up for the purpose of working over such slags as assay too high in silver and lead to be thrown away, of which there are large amounts. The principal ore worked while I was in the employ of the company was that of the well known Emma mine in Utah, and also small quantities of Colorado ore. Soft solders are used principally in the automotive, can-making, building construction and electrical industries, but their field of usefulness extends well beyond these principal users to a vast list of miscellaneous applications where metal joints are required. The most common soft solders and the only ones considered in this discussion are those composed of lead and tin, with or without various relatively small percentages of impurities or additions. A small amount of antimony is often purposely added. As an indication of the importance of these lead-tin solders, 8620 long tons of tin were consumed in 1934 in the United States for making new solder, and during most of 1935 from 900 to 1000 long tons often were used each month. In addition, many thousands of tons of secondary solder are recirculated annually. A great many factors influence the properties of joints made with soft solders. Fluxes and the fluxing procedure used to prepare the surfaces to be joined in order to give a true metal-to-metal contact are among the most important of these factors. The temperatures used, cleanliness of the work and general soldering technique have their effect, but when results are unsatisfactory they are usually attributed to the metallic solder itself and the raw materials from which it is made. Sometimes criticism of the solder is justified. The wrong composition may be chosen for a given job, impurities may be present that ruin certain desired qualities, or uniformity may be lacking. A solder may even be looked upon with suspicion because of its ancestry, regardless of its true composition and behavior. To clarify the effect of slight differences in composition as found in commercially refined solders, a comparison of properties of solders grouped according to their origin has been undertaken. MR. BIRKINBINE'S description of the bad working and sudden chilling of the Warwick Furnace last summer, seems to me quite phenomenal in blast-furnace practice. During my connection with the management of blast furnaces for many years, in the anthracite, coke, and raw-bituminous coal districts, such a case has never come under my notice. It seems to me that the scaffold in the zone of fusion could not have established itself (so that the whole power of the engines, with a blast pressure ranging from 12 to 18 pounds per square inch, could not penetrate), unless the furnace was previously badly scaffolded and bridged in some of its upper sections, from 15 to 30 feet above the hearth level, either in the zone of chemical action or the beginning of the zone of fusion. Such a "barrier to the upward gaseous currents would cause a suspension of combustion which may have superinducedd the scaffold that is assumed to have existed in the zone of fusion. It is Difficult to conceive' that an agglomerated mass almost across the section of the lower bosh should have formed all at once, if the furnace was free and porous for the reaction of the gaseous currents above. Therefore, I think, the Warwick furnace was by no means in as free, open, and fine internal condition at the time the trouble commenced as the description of its regular working would lead us to suppose. I do not question the accuracy of the statements relative to the output of iron, etc. I merely claim that the phenomena., as described, could not have been almost instantaneously developed, unless there had been an incipient seaffold and lodgment above the zone of fusion. A short time ago I paid a visit to the alluvial gold fields on the tributaries of the Chaudiere River in Beauce County, Quebec, in company with A. 0. Dufresne, late manager of the Champs d'or Rigaud-Veaudreuil, and now assistant to the Superintendent of Mines of the Province of Quebec. As the conditions under which the gold occurs in this district are not very generally known, and present some interesting features, a brief description of these conditions, and a consideration of the causes which gave rise to them, may be of interest to other mining engineers. During the latter half of last century the country was visited by many mining engineers and geologists, and many references to it may be found in the reports of the Geological Survey of Canada between 1848 and 1911. The most important of these are by J. A. Dresser and J. Keele and the late Robert Chalmers. The Department of Colonization and Mines of the Province of Quebec also published a report with map on the district by J. Obalski. From the earliest times the valley of the Chaudiere River formed one of the main avenues of approach to the St. Lawrence in the vicinity of Quebec from the country to the south as far as the seaboard of the States of Maine and Massachusetts. The Indians had a well-known trail along the banks of the stream, and armed troops and foraging parties constantly moved backward and forward along it between Quebec and New England in those insecure times before the ceding of Canada to Great Britain. Even yet the natural advantages of this old military route are recognized, and the government of the Province of Quebec has now under construction along it a magnificent highway from Quebec to the International Boundary Line, which is to form part of a through highway from that city to Boston. The land along the valley is naturally well suited for agriculture, and about the end of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth centuries farmers began to go back from the St. Lawrence, and to occupy the higher lands along the upper portions of the Chaudiere Valley. This settlement has gone on until now the country is peopled with a prosperous agricultural population.

NEARLY two hundred 'engineers attended the dinner given at the Hotel Pennsylvania on Monday-evening, Oct. 10, to the delegation from the American l3nginiering Societies to Great Britain and France when the John Fritz Medal was presented to Sir Robert Hadfield and to Eugene Schneider. Representatives of the British and French Governments ' and of foreign engineering societies gave to the event an international aspect unique in gatherings of engineers. Messages from men distinguished in science, statesmanship and diplomacy were read. Medals struck by the French Government were presented to the general chairman of the deputation, to the chairman of each' individual delegation and to the president's of the four Founder Societies. The meeting was regarded by engineers as formally ushering in a definite movement for world unity in the engineering profession. J. Vipond Davies, president of the United Engineering Society, acted as toastmaster. The speakers ,were Ambrose Swasey, Charles F. Rand, F. B. Jewett, A. S. Dwight, John R. Freeman, all members of the deputa- tion; and M. Gaston Liebert, French Consul General; Captain G. H. Armstrong, British Counsel General; G. G. Clapperton, representing the British Institution bf Electrical Engineers, and Prof. Jacques Cavalier, spokesman for the French universities. Among the engineers from other cities was Governor. James Hartness of Vermont.

A Discussion at a meeting of the New York Section, Dec. 2, 1914 D. H. BROWNE.-If 35 years ago we had met to discuss the subject that is before us to-night, the criticism that we must all be mad or we would not be here at all would have been perfectly applicable. No group of men would have come together a generation ago to discuss the subject of smelting ores without extraneous fuel, or largely by the oxidation of their own impurities, without incurring the imputation of being crazy. But metallurgy, like all other branches of human industry, progresses by idealism. In every generation there are old men who see visions and young men who dream dreams. Thirty-five years ago John Hollway conceived the idea that in the Rio Tinto ore the sulphur and iron, if properly oxidized, could be made to produce heat enough to carry on the smelting of the ores. He saw the vision. Twenty-five years ago Mr. Austin, of Montana, took out a patent on a furnace in which to carry out Hollway's ideas. He dreamed the dream. Twenty years ago a man working in Montana grasped the possibilities of this idea. To him has been given that inexpressible pleasure which comes from realizing the idea and making the concept concrete. Gentlemen, it gives me great pleasure to introduce to you the man who made the ideal real, Robert Sticht, of Tasmania. ROBERT C. STICHT, Queenstown, Tasmania.-I find it extremely difficult to act up, in the smallest degree, to the enconium passed upon me by Mr. Browne. It is true it has been my good fortune to be able to put some sort of method into the "madness" of 25 years ago; but I am not the originator of the idea, nor the only one who has carried it out. Mr. Browne mentioned the originator, who undoubtedly is Mr. Hollway. He also mentioned Mr. Austin, who gave the first instigation to pyrite smelting as now practiced. As against both of these men I was fortunate enough to be able to command the necessary natural resources to carry out the idea continuously in a practical way, so as to make it permanently possible.

The work of the Committee on Industrial Preparedness* is well summed up in the following letter written by Thomas A. Edison, Chair-man of the Naval Consulting Board, after President Wilson and signed the army appropriation and army reorganization bills: "The Committee on Industrial Preparedness of the Naval Consulting Board, of which committee Howard E. Coffin is chairman, after a five months' campaign in many ways unique in vigor and vision has played a very definite part in the measures for the national defense which have just become law. It is responsible for having laid the foundation for a true industrial preparedness in this nation. "Five months ago the committee, wholly non-partisan in make-up, acting with the civil, mechanical, mining and electrical engineers and the chemists of the country, members of five great scientific bodies, began its work in' every nook and cranny of the land. The purpose was to prepare American industry efficiently to support the armed forces of America in the event of war. "The public, the business men and the legislators at Washington knew little regarding the demands on industry in connection with modern war. No department at Washington was charged with the duty of coordinating the needs of the army and navy with transportation, industry, and kindred functions. The purchasing, quartermaster's and ordnance departments of the army and navy were unable to buy military supplies except by competitive offering in the open market. No one had considered the need, and no legislative machinery was in existence, for preventing the presence of skilled workers on the fighting front when they would in time of war be needed in the factories, mills and mines of the country. Neither at Washington or elsewhere was there even a list of the industrial resources of the nation in such shape as could be used for practical purposes in case war should come. "The three things, then, that the committee headed by Mr. Coffin set out to do and that now have been brought about were as follows: First, to mobilize concretely the business men of America and their output against a day of need. This meant chiefly to discover in fullest detail just what equipment our manufacturers possessed that might be swung over to supply the army and navy swiftly and bountifully from the hour the colors were raised. In a few weeks this initial task, which has been a truly colossal one, will be at an end. A complete report of the equipment of practically every concern of substantial size in the country is now in the hands of the - committee. Directly in charge of the great inventory has been W. S. Gifford, Supervising Director of the Committee. The second step was to procure legislation making possible the placing by the war and navy departments of annual orders for munitions in small quantities to American manufacturers now not producing such things, so that quietly, efficiently and thoroughly they could learn in time of peace how to supply the government in time of war. The new laws make all this possible. It should be said here that this practice will bring about a geographical diffusion of munition plants all over our country, instead of affording us only a few such concerns for the most part near the exposed seaboards, as at present. It is obvious that this system will also throttle all talk of a munitions trust.

A method has been developed that permits the correlations of Mehra and Thodos8 and Dastur and thodos2 for binary systems to be used for the prediction of the vapor-liquid equilibrium constants of the light and heavy constituents, Kland Kh, of a ternary hydrocarbon mixture. Furthermore, the unique relationship observed in this study, i.e., a plot of log Ke/Ki vs log Kp/K h is linear and passes through the origin, permits the calculation of the K-value for the intermediate component. This approach has been used to establish K-values for the constituents of the three ternary hydrocarbon systems used to develop this method and has also been applied to two additional ternary hydrocarbon systems to yield an average deviation of 7.7 per cent resulting from a total of 294 points for the five ternary systems considered. INTRODUCTION The rigorous calculation of vapor-liquid equilibrium constants for systems containing two or more components is a difficult problem and becomes extremely complex at elevated pressures and for conditions approaching the critical point. Although thermodynamic relationships can be developed to account for the vapor-liquid equilibrium behavior of simple systems, their use is limited because the necessary PVT data for these systems are not generally available. To establish a method for calculating K constants directly, without any recourse to the PVT behavior of a system, Mehra and Thodos8 applied the principle of corresponding states to the vapor-liquid equilibrium constants of binary hydrocarbon systems. They developed a series of charts which made possible the prediction of K-values for all binary hydrocarbon systems not containing methane. This work has been extended by Dastur and Thodos2 to include binary hydrocarbon systems containing methane. The charts developed in these two studies cover the high-pressure region and are applicable to conditions in the vicinity of the critical point. The ability of this approach to predict vapor-liquid equilibrium constants of binary hydrocarbon systems suggests that this method may be extended to the prediction of the K-values of the components of ternary hydrocarbon systems. In this investigation, the charts developed for both the methane and non - methane binary systems,2,8 together with mixture rules developed in this study, have been used to predict the K-values of the light and heavy components of a ternary hydrocarbon system. These calculated values are then used to establish the K-value of the intermediate component through the use of a novel relationship developed in the present study. DEVELOPMENT OF METHOD FOR PREDICTING K-VALUES OF TERNARY SYSTEMS The application of the corresponding state charts developed for binary hydrocarbon systems is restricted to those systems containing two components. The extension of these correlations to three-component systems requires that the ternary system be reduced to an equivalent binary, which can be treated in a manner consistent with the corresponding state development. To establish such an approach, the vapor-liquid equilibrium constant of the light component K is first calculated by assuming that the ternary mixture consists of the light component and a pseudo-heavy component of the intermediate and heavy constituents of the original ternary. To establish the vapor-liquid equilibrium constant of the heavy component Kh, the light and intermediate constituents of the ternary are combined to form a pseudo-light component of another equivalent binary system. INTRODUCTION The project financing described elsewhere in this book is available to major mining companies on the basis of a strong balance sheet, a significant equity position in a project of proven feasibility, and a demonstrated ability to bring ore deposits into production. "Junior" mining companies, which are most active in Canada, Australia, the US, and South Africa, by definition do not meet these criteria. In many cases, junior companies will need to raise money simply to cover the costs of acquiring and exploring potential deposits. In what follows we will look primarily at junior financing practices in the US and Canada, although the same general principles will apply in Australia and South Africa. The principal vehicles for junior mine company financing are limited partnerships, the private placement of securities and debentures, and public offering of securities, and property deals with stronger companies, in the form of leases, earn-ins and co-ventures. The cost (in terms of dollars or equity) and, to some extent, the applicability of using these difficult approaches varies with the stage of development of the property and with the corresponding degree of risk to the investor. Much junior company fund raising is, in fact, "interim" financing in that it allows the company to improve its properties and develop its assets to the stage where more favorable financing arrangements may become available. Companies will therefore often use several of the approaches described above during the development life of a specific property. LIMITED PARTNERSHIPS Limited partnerships and syndications are a popular way of structuring the initial private financing of mine developments because of their attractive tax consequences for the well-to-do investor. Costs of exploration and development can in many countries be passed through as deductions to the limited partners, who are thus able to gamble on a possible windfall at little real cost. In addition to private Canadian funds, much German money flowed into Canadian exploration ventures on this basis, but stopped in 1982 due to economic conditions in West Germany. In the US, recent regulations have, in the great majority of cases, taken away the ability to "shelter" income in mining limited partnerships. Deductions taken by the individual investor cannot exceed the amount of money he actually has at risk. Nevertheless, the allowable deductions are still attractive and some of the major mining companies are now beginning to look at limited partnerships as a vehicle for attracting additional exploration funding. Ranchers Exploration and Development has successfully put together several drilling funds on this basis. THE PRIVATE PLACEMENT Initial funding for the acquisition and preliminary exploration of prospects is often accomplished through a private placement of unregistered securities or, where it is not a problem to carry debt on the statement, by a private placement sale of debentures. A fledgling company wishing to do a public offering may well be advised by an underwriter to accomplish a small private placement as a precondition of the larger offering. In this way, the sale of the registered securities is not inhibited by the company starting out with a debt-ridden balance sheet and no demonstrated ability to secure the additional financing generally necessary beyond the proceeds of that offering. In the US, the securities offered in a private placement are not registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (S.E.C.) but are restricted as to their resale, and could be further restricted by a underwriting agreement

Production of crude oil in Tennessee during 1941 was slightly more than 15,000 bbl., about the same as in the preceding year. Two thirds of the total was from the Mississippi limestone pools in Scott and Morgan Counties. About a dozen small scattered wells in Clay, Pickett, and Fentress Counties, pumped irregularly, produced approximately 5000 bbl. Natural gas was marketed from wells in Morgan and Fentress Counties for consumption in the Sunbright and Jamestown areas, respectively. The production by counties is shown in Table I. Drilling activities in the state fell to the lowest stage since 1933. Twenty-seven wells were spudded in during 1941, of which six were drilling or only temporarily suspended on Dec. 37, 1941. Of the 22 completions, four were gas wells of undetermined quantity, but are classed as commercial, and 17 were dry or near-dry holes. One well encountered oil, but it has not been tested. The total footage drilled during the year was 29,916 ft.; the average depth of wells was 1359 ft. The more important wildcats are listed in Table 2; the distribution of tests according to physiographic divisions is given in Table 3. East Tennessee.—One well was drilled to 3480 ft. in northwestern Anderson County, in the highly disturbed Appalachian area, a region long considered the most unfavorable in the state for the accumulation of oil and gas. Another test is now drilling below 2000 ft. in this general area. Cumberland Plateau.—There were two completions in the Cumberland Plateau area. One test, drilled in northwestern Scott County in an area of former Mississippi limestone production,' encountered a considerable amount of free oil at 850 ft., about the same horizon as in the old abandoned wells. No pumping tests have been made to date. A well at Oneida, Scott County, found gas at 1579 ft. in a sandy limestone of lower Mississippian age. The volume was reported doubled by a shot, although no open-flow measurement is available. Eastern Highland Rim.—Six completions on the eastern Highland Rim resulted in two small gas wells in Fentress County, which will be used to augment the supply for Jamestown. The producing horizons are shaly limestones of Ordovician (Trenton) age. Two wells in this area tested the upper part of the Knox dolomite group, one of which encountered some free oil in a sandy dolomite at 1670 to 1681 ft. The cut-and-fill mining methods in use in the mines of The International Nickel Company of Canada Limited, at Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited, in the Sudbury District, and at McIntyre Porcupine Mines Limited in the Porcupine District, are typical of the general cut-and-fill practice in both the base-metal mines and the gold mines in the Province of Ontario. The following pages describe the methods in use. HORIZONTAL CUT-AND-FILL STOPING Horizontal cut-and-fill stoping, as practiced in the mines of The International Nickel Company of Canada Limited, falls into two main classifications: (I) transverse cut-and-fill stoping, where ground conditions or wide ore bodies make it necessary to establish narrow stopes and pillars across the width of the ore body; (2) longitudinal cut-and-fill stoping where ore body widths and ground conditions allow safe mining of the full width of the ore body. Transverse Cut-and-fill StopiNg General Stoping Layouts Stope and Pillar Widhs.—For transverse stoping, experience has indicated that narrow stopes and pillars, 27 ft. 6 in and 22 ft., respectively, are most satisfactory. These width are multiples of 5 ft. 6 in., which is the center to center dimension of a standard square set. Thus any stope, or block of stopes, can be readily converted from cut-and-fill to square set-and-fill if ground conditions should warrant such a change. Formerly, pillars were established 16 ft. 6 in. wide, the equivalent of the width of three square sets, with the intention of extracting the pillars by mining an overhand slice one set wide and an underhand slice two sets wide. However, subsequent experience proved that a two-set overhand slice is so much more efficiently mined than a one-set slice, and 22-ft. pillars have been made standard. Chutes.—The stope chutes are established on the longitudinal center line of the stopes and are spaced at 22-ft. centers from footwall to hanging wall. The footwall chute is usually from 5 to 10 ft. from the footwall of the stope. It is offset where necessary at an angle of 52° and vertical chutes are carried from the offset at 22-ft. centers. In sections of the ore body where a flat hanging wall would cut off hanging-wall chutes within a few cuts of the sill, it has proved to be more economical to use temporary chutes or slushers, or both, for these first few cuts, rather than to el permanent chutes at the hanging wall.

HAVING previously described the metals to you, before I proceed any farther I do not wish to fail to tell you, as I promised to do in the first chapter on metals, what I have learned through experience concerning the semiminerals, although this may seem to you outside our proposed subject. Since these are not produced by Nature as all rock or all metal they are called semiminerals by speculative physicians. Many kinds of these are found; those that resemble rocks are earthy, very difficult to liquefy, and much more adapted for adorning paintings than for anything else. Those that liquefy with fire, like sulphur, antimony, marcasite, [22] calamine, zaffre, manganese, and others, resemble the metals almost like brothers. Some others are more watery so that they dissolve in water, although they are fairly dense, and are obtained and reduced to their, perfection by means of water. These are the salts, vitriol, rock alum, and saltpeter. To these, as a watery thing, belongs also quicksilver, as it is commonly called because of its motion. Although it appears. not only liquid, but very liquid, this is not at all similar in its effects to any of the above. Indeed, it retains its same being until its very form is consumed. Since the reasons for its effects are almost impossible to investigate, I do not intend to speak of them here or to enter now this maze of speculation, because I wish to make definitely clear to you what this quicksilver really is. Therefore, leaving aside opinions and disputes, I shall take only those of the said semiminerals that I know are useful. First we shall see the method by which the semiminerals can be found and then how they are to be extracted from their matrices. These, perhaps, have no less need of effort and industry than the metals since they are substances completely hidden in the rocks or in the earth. For this reason some of these that are sought are made use of by means of fusion after they have been mined from their mother mountains, and some others need to be disposed by a certain maturative corruption, now with moisture and coldness, now with dryness and heat, as with waters, rains, frosts, or long baking in the sun, with fire, or even with a strong reheating within themselves. Most of them can finally be brought to the desired end by means of solution with water and fire.

All engineering education is faced by certain basic problems, three of which seem to have particular present importance in geological engineering training in general, and in respect to training for oil field geo-exploratory work in particular. Problem i The first of these problems has to do with present and future educational objectives and with the numbers and qualities of the men who should be coming out of our geo-exploratory training programs. Before the war we needed ever-increasing numbers of graduates at the Bachelor's level and a very much smaller number of men who had reached the Doctorate degree. Now, with more difficult, more extensive, and more costly exploratory work; with a rapid expansion of company "staff" activities, and with the initiation of many new research organizations and laboratories; it is clear that men of exceptional ability will be more and more in demand, and that the schools will need to carry a greater proportion of their students through to the Ph.D, degree. Problem 2 Assuming that the mineral industries will need an increasing supply of well-qualified Ph.D.s for future geoexploratory work (staff, line and research), can the schools expect to provide this supply of able Ph.D.s merely by expanding the proportion of B.S. and B.A. majors who go on through to the doctorate stage of training? And the answer is definitely "No"—as the situation stands at present. Most A.B. graduates are years short of the preparations in basic science and elementary engineering prerequisite to effective graduate study in the geoexploratory fields (paleontology ex-cepted), and similarly many of the annual crop of B.S. graduates lack adequate training in English; in ancient and modern history; and in the modern principles of labor and public relations. Indeed, several basic problems of undergraduate curricular organization and integration remain to be solved before most recipients of a Bachelor's degree will have that sound and broad educational foundation prerequisite to graduate training on a really effective basis. It is for these reasons that we have continued to experiment with our geological engineering program at Princeton, in an endeavor to provide a pilot-plant demonstration of a suitably broad and flexible undergraduate curriculum. Problem 3 But assuming that the schools can and do get undergraduate curricula set up in proper phase and scale to meet needed enrollment quotas for graduate training, what about the most urgent part of our whole mineral-industry educational problem? What about finding and bringing into mineral-industry training those youngsters of superior ability who are, by potential or known inclination, especially well-qualified for geoexploratory work?

During the last decade many conditions have been encountered that have materially increased the cost of the production of coal. As in most cases it has not been practicable to increase the selling price of such coal sufficiently to insure the necessary margin of profit, the mine management has been forced to avail itself of what might be termed unusual means that costs might be held at as low a figure as possible. The so-called efficiency engineer has been called upon, costly power plants have been built and machinery has been installed to replace manual labor wherever possible. Another aid used recently to secure economies through the more intelligent production of coal, is the chemist. As the coal industry, barring the production of byproduct coke, does not at once give evidence of its need of the services of the chemist, the writer will endeavor to point out a few of the services that this branch of the staff has been able to render. The preparation of coal in the past has been carried on entirely upon an empirical basis, that is, the criterion adopted has been an ocular inspection. Unfortunately, the appearance of a coal and especially of an anthracite, has but little relation to its fuel value, and as long as coal is purchased for the heat that can be obtained from it by its combustion, the quantity of such heat that is purchased must be one of the principal desiderata in selecting or preparing a coal. Were coals purchased for use as bric-a-brac or for exhibition in museums it might be both wise and just to purchase them upon their appearance. After 4 or 5 years of investigation the fact has been established that coals of very inferior appearance, and I now have special reference to anthracite, might and often did possess heating and burning properties superior to those possessed by bright coals which in the past had commanded considerable and uniform premiums in the market. This being the case the question arose as to whether the trade could be convinced of this fact. While at first some difficulty was experienced in establishing the quality of such dull coals, still it was found that the real obstacle to the sale of these materials in the past had been the fact that the coal producers' own sales departments felt convinced of the inferiority of this type of fuel and when complaints were registered they were given ready credence. This report outlines the various features of modern blast-furnace practice with brief comments thereon, and with references to some of the more recent methods devised for applying the principles and attaining the purposes aimed at' under these headings.. In general, the trend in the United States is in the direction of larger and larger furnaces with ever increasing capacity from which, with improved details in methods and equipment, and attention to details of management, considerable progress in. economy of production has been attained, in fuel consumption and in other items of production cost.

It is nearly twenty years since Dr. Raymond, then U. S. Commissioner of Mining Statistics, wrote the first paper (so far as I have been informed) upon the education of tile mining engineer, as a distinct profession for American youth. At that time nearly all the prominent mining engineers in the country had studied in one or more of the foreign schools, or had reached their high standing through years of experience in the school of life. The paper mentioned five schools in the United States in which some attention was paid to the teaching of mining engineering, but as four of them had barely graduated their first classes, their influence had not begun to make itself widely felt. Two years later the American Institute of Mining Engineers was formed, and it has been a most potent factor in the problem of "disseminating information on mining and metallurgical subjects," so potent that the need of a national school of mines as headquarters for information as well as for instruction is no longer urged. The number of schools also increased, and in 1876 Abram S. Hewitt, in his Presidential address on "A Century of Mining and Metallurgy in the United States,'' gave a list of fourteen. In 1876 the series of discussions, led by Holley's admirable paper, brought the whole subject of technical education before the country. These discussions, while mostly devoted to the engineering professions in general, touched upon the question of mining and metallurgicel training to some extent. Since that time several papers, inspired by the publication of that series of discussions, have appeared in our Transactions, and several notable addresses have been delivered at the opening or at the commencement exercises of various schools. But nothing directly bearing upon the curriculum of the mining and metallurgical schools has ever appeared in our annual volumes. As education is one of the many-sided subjects which cannot be discussed too often, I have ventured to bring it up again. SILVER reached a new high, with the ceiling the limit, at the annual Institute dinner at the Commodore on Washington's Birthday night. Carrying along as ballast other commodities, such as rolls, roses and ferns, souvenir boxes and table number placards, hundreds of silvery balloons, cut loose from their moorings at the tables, bounced idly against the plaster decorations high overhead. At the head table, Scott Turner, retiring President, pre- sided as toastmaster, with the new President, Frederick M. Becket, on his right, and the Chairman of the New York Section, Sydney H. Ball, on his left. Many other distinguished Institute members, medalists, and representatives of organizations and committees, ranged to the east and west. Each had the opportunity at least to rise and bow.

In this research, the proper temperature for the reduction of iron ores by carbon monoxide was determined. Also, the difference of the rate of reduction on the sizes of ore under four mesh per linear inch was estimated, but no evidence could be found. Rates of reduction on the seven kinds of ore were compared with the results of the experiment, showing a close relation between reducibility and density of ore. Finally, the maximum size of ore that can be reduced in applicable length of time was determined. The author thinks that the process of production of steel may be replaced by low-temperature reduction of iron ores some time in the future. THE reduction of iron oxide, such as Fe203, to iron in the blast furnace is performed principally by carbon monoxide, but partly by solid carbon by the two following reactions: Fe203 + 3CO = 2Fe + 3CO2 2Fe203 + 3C = 4Fe + 3CO2 It is known that reduction by carbon monoxide takes place at a much lower temperature than reduction by carbon and that the reducing action of carbon monoxide progresses to the inside of the ore in lump form by gaseous diffusion. In the reduction by carbon, however, the reducing action takes place only at the contact surface of the ore and carbon, so that the more complete the reduction by carbon monoxide, the more efficient is the operation. However, the reduction does not progress as shown in the foregoing formula, because carbon dioxide acts oxidizingly on the metallic iron to such a degree that when the gaseous composition reaches a certain proportion of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide, the reduction practically stops, even though the gases are moving slowly through the heated ore. The proportions of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in the gas depend on the kind of iron oxide and the temperature of reduction, also the duration of time in the reaction. The longer the time of the reaction, the higher the proportion of carbon dioxide obtained in the gas, but finally it will attain to a condition of equilibrium.
