The alloying of various elements with gold to produce different colors is an old art, but the effect of each element or combination of elements is not generally known. Investigations have been made in this field by F. E. Carter,' E. M. Wise,2 and L. Sterner-Rainer.3 It is the intent of this paper to present in schematic diagrams the effects of various elements upon the color and the melting point of gold alloys. In this investigation 2-oz. melts made in a high-frequency inductiorl furnace were used for all tests. The melting points were determined by the use of a calibrated chromel-alumel thermocouple sealed in a thin-walled alundum tube. The couple was then submerged in the molten metal and the freezing and melting points were determined by using a Leeds and Northrup potentiometer. By checking several melts using copper, zinc and gold, it was found that the accuracy of determining the melting point was within ± 5" F. To determine the differences in colors and to classify them, a wet tissue paper was placed over the polished samples and examined under a uniform white light. The 2 by 45 by 0.045-in. samples were cut from 50 per cent cold-worked strip. The original ingot was 3 by % by % in. This visual comparison, although not scientifically exact, served as a quite satisfactory means for determining and classifying these differences. The base alloys, or "hardeners," were first made up and analyzed, after which the gold and silver were added. This method of making up the alloys was chosen so that the same base alloy could be used for the gold alloys of different karats. The first series consisted of gold, copper, zinc and nickel, the copper comprising from 85 to 65 per cent of the content of the "hardener" and the zinc and nickel replacing copper. The second scries consisted of gold, silver, copper, zinc and nickel, the copper comprising from 85 to 65 per cent of the content of the hardener with the silver, nickel and zinc replacing copper. There was no particular reason for choosing these combinations, except that they gave a color range from red-pink to white.

In my report for the year 1922, I drew attention to the falling off in membership of the Institute due to the depressed condition of the mining industry in several lines and the inability of many of our members to find profitable employment in mining or its associated branches. A number who were unemployed during 1922 established connections during 1923, but a still greater number have been forced to resign or drop their membership during 1923 Fortunately, the number dropped is not so great as in the previous year. The Employment Service conducted by, the four Founder Societies bears witness to the trend in business For the young men just out of college, there are plenty of opportunities at small salaries, there are plenty of opportunities for them as laborers; but for the mature members, those of experience, there are few calls During the last eighteen months, our Employment Service has been able to place only six of our members out of every hundred engineers for whom it has found work. Another loss which this Society has suffered, but which is not felt so keenly by our sister societies, is in its foreign members. The A. I M. E. has always had a large foreign membership, but of recent years exchange has been so heavily against many European and South American coun¬tries that a large number of members residing abroad have been compelled to relinquish their membership Almost invariably these members express keen regret because of the necessity that confronts them, and almost invariably the writers express hope that present conditions will not last long and that they will soon be able to ask for reinstatement. Having stated the darkest side of the picture first, it may now be drawn to your attention that in spite of these losses the number of persons applying for membership was decidedly encouraging. THE Getchell mine is a comparatively recent discovery in the old Potosi mining district, Humboldt County, Nevada, a district organized in the seventies and eighties, in which some prospecting was done in several metamorphic zones along a monzonite-sedimentary contact. The district had no production in the early days and no further work was done until the same metamorphic zones were prospected for tungsten (scheelite) in 1917 and 1918, when a few small lots were shipped. It again lay dormant until 1934, when prospectors investigated a large siliceous escarpment at one end of the old district where outcroppings were a prominent feature of the topography. Undoubtedly, during the early prospecting of the district, the outcroppings had been investigated for mineral, probably by panning, with negligible results because the gold later found is invisible in the concentrate and is refractory. A fire assay revealed the presence of sufficient gold to warrant develop-ment work. The outcroppings were easily prospected by short tunnels having their portals in the siliceous material on the hanging-wall side, with a maximum distance to crosscut to the footwall of 135 ft., or a distance at right angle to dip of 60 to 90 ft. Development work, reaching a depth of over 600 ft. on the dip of the vein, was done by means of various crosscut tunnels, winzes and laterals. A churn-drill hole was also sunk, which intersected the vein at a depth of 1100 ft. on the dip. Sufficient development work of this character was completed by 1937 to justify the erection of a reduc-tion plant to roast the sulphide ore and cyanide the calcine, and to treat the oxidized ore by straight cyanidation, to make a doré bullion for shipment to the mint. The erection of the plant was started that year and finished early in 1938, with a combined capacity of about 800 tons per day. It has operated continuously since erection and recently was enlarged to handle 1000 tons per day. The vein dips with the slope of the mountain, and by stripping the hanging wall the ore may be mined by power shovel for several hun-dred feet below the outcrop. Thereafter underground methods will be necessary.

During the year 1939, Mexican production totaled 42,479,000 bbl.; a daily average of 116,381 bbl. or a little over 2 per cent of the estimated world production. The Mexican Government operates 100 per cent of the refining branch of the industry, 100 per cent of the domestic distribution, 96 per cent of the crude production and 92 per cent of the total exports. No discussion of the Mexican petroleum industry in 1939 is adequate without reference to the "expropriation" of the foreign-owned oil properties in Mexico by executive fiat on March 18, 1938. The forcible seizing of the properties culminated a long series of efforts on the part of the Mexican Government to obtain control of the oil properties developed through foreign initiative and with foreign capital in Mexico. The heart of the issue is whether the Mexican nation or any nation may with impunity confiscate the legally acquired properties of American citizens. The Department of State of our Government has in its communications to Mexico emphasized the fact that its "expropriation" of American properties was confiscatory because Mexico had failed to make "adequate, effective and prompt compensation"; that the taking was no less confiscatory "because there may be an expressed intent to pay at some time in the future," and that, consequently, "Mexico has assumed and continues to assume to exercise a right without compliance with the condition necessary to give such exercise a recognizable status of legality." Mexico has professed its willingness to pay for the oil properties but at the same time through its Supreme Court it has declared that the owners or lessees do not have the exclusive right to extract and dispose of the oil in the subsoil. This is a reversal of the Mexican position with respect to oil as set forth in the Mexican mining laws, affirmed by Mexican Supreme Court decisions, and as clarified in the Warren-Paync and the Morrow-Calles agreements, as well as in diplomatic correspondence. THE constitution and structure of the hydrous forms of aluminum oxides and hydroxides have been studied in the laboratory of the Depart¬ment of Chemistry at Rice Institute for almost three decades. Progress reports have been made from time to time 13,17,18 summarizing and evaluating the existing state of knowledge concerning the complex inorganic system A12Oa-H2O. X-ray and electron diffraction analysis, together with dehydra¬tion isobars and isotherms, have been the most useful methods for increasing the understanding of the structure and interrelationships of the various forms of alumina and aluminum hydroxides. The purpose of this paper is to bring up to date the information now available, in the hope that a clearer understanding of the structures of these materials may prove useful in aiding mineralogists and geologists in studies of the genetic significance of the aluminum hydroxide minerals, and possibly of the closely related clay minerals. Early investigators found the system alumina-water to be confusing, since, prior to X-ray diffraction examination, it was not possible to clearly identify and characterize the various crystalline forms. One could not be certain as to whether or not different investigators were working with the same chemical individuals. In later studies, including some from the authors' laboratory, addi¬tional confusion resulted from difficulty in preparing pure samples of the various aluminum hydroxides and in obtaining relatively large crystals of dimensions above the colloidal range of particle size. Even at present, it is difficult to establish sets of interplanar spacings for the several forms of the aluminum hydroxides, as illustrated by the 29 different X-ray diffraction pat¬terns listed in a current publication. The nomenclature of the aluminum hydroxides is also extremely confus¬ing, inasmuch as two different systems are employed by large groups of in¬vestigators. Plans are being made to formulate a uniform system of nomen¬clature but in this report the designations employed will agree with previous papers from the same source.13,17,18 Four forms of crystalline aluminum hydroxides may be considered to be well defined and recognized, which, together with hydrous alumina "amor¬phous to X-rays," comprise an exceedingly complex inorganic system. The adsorption mechanism of dodecylammonium acetate (DAA) on mercury in potassium fluoride solutions at natural, near neutral pH was investigated. Difler-ential capacity combined with electrocapillary measurements on a dropping mercury electrode were found to provide a sensitive and reliable approach. A shift in the electro capillary maximum (or the point-of-zero-charge) towards positive polarization of the surface due to the adsorption of amine indicated a specific affinity of dodecylammonium ion for mercury surfaces. The amine was shown to adsorb competitively with potassium ion on mercury. Through correlation of the adsorption density of the amine, calculated from the thermodynamic analyses of the electrocapillary curves, and of the diflerential capacity curves, the adsorbed state and the orientation of the amine at the interface were considered. The similarities and the differences in the adsorption behavior of the amine on mercury and on such ionic solids as quartz, silver sulfide, and silver iodide were evaluated. With the promise of flotation providing a cheap and large-scale process for the upgrading of low-grade ores and magnetic concentrates, the iron ore industry has made a sustained search over the years for a flotation reagent of general applicability and high selectivity. Having shelves full of commercial reagents already on hand and anticipating more, both the users and the suppliers are in need of an experimental approach sensitive enough to differentiate the individual characteristics in each group of reagents. Therefore, the adsorption behavior of various flotation reagents on mineral surfaces from aqueous solutions has been a subject of much investigation. The current view of adsorption based on the electrical double-layer theory is formulated on the assumption that certain ions in solution act as potential-determining ions. THE fact is notable though probably little known that the United States is the only nation obtaining and distributing through its Government bureaus any data pertaining to waste metals and drosses. Some foreign governments do issue reports relating to mine or smelter production of primary metals, but none gives in scope and detail the information published now by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and formerly by the U. S. Geological Survey; and this is despite the fact that the funds annually allotted for those purposes are insignificant in comparison with allotments for the preparation of data relating to other industries of like importance. The earliest data on the production of metals from secondary sources in the United. States were contained in a press bulletin issued by the U. S. Geological Survey on Jan. 4, 1909. The information published was that for the year 1907 obtained and compiled by C. E. Siebenthal, who was one of the first to visualize the growing importance of the scrap-metal industry. The National Conservation Commission had emphasized its opinion that the known domestic supply of certain kinds of the more important metals was being rapidly marketed and that while there was no immediate cause for concern it was best to conserve such resources. Not only had there been a lamentable lack of any data regarding the quantity of scrap metals available or used but also gross carelessness and indifference in the segregation, collection, and effective use of scrap material. Siebenthal realized that even approximately correct statistics of recoveries from the more important base-metal scrap and drosses were nearly as essential to both producers and consumers as the statistics of the output of primary metals. There were not then nor are there now sufficient funds for complete collection of data, nor was it considered the province of the Geological Survey to do more than determine approximately the recovery of secondary metals for use in supplementing those given for the primary metals. There was considerable prospecting for new supplies of oil in Arkansas during the past year, regardless of the overproduction affecting the industry throughout the country. Justification for this new work was not lacking, as the local markets more than threatened to absorb a declining production. There were, however, no important new discoveries in the state during 1929. The McDonald area in sec. 2515, S.-18 W., threatened to expand into a major producing area. Oil showings had been encountered here in wells drilled by the McDonald Oil Corpn. as early as the fall of 1928. In July, 1929, an initial production of 1000 bbl. of 32" oil was obtained in McDonald Bros. B-3 Wilson, from a sand at 2780 to 2786 ft., which is about 80 ft. higher than the sand previously tested in the neighboring wells. This production declined rapidly. At the end of the year there were six producers making about 200 bbl. per day total. Seven dry holes have temporarily stopped development in that area. The showing of B-3 was sufficient to cause considerable leasing activity. The area lies several miles west of the Louann portion of the Smackover field. The discovery well went to 2873 ft. and found Glen Rose lime in bottom. The age of the producing sand is in doubt; it seems closely related to the Tokio sand. During 1929, several paying wells were brought in, as a northeastern extension to the Smackover Heavy area, in sec. 34 and 35-15-15, from the Nacatoch sand. Over 20 new wells were drilled and resulted in at least 1500 bbl. production. The down-dip or off-structure territory contiguous to the Smackover uplift was further tested at various locations with the usual results; that is, a showing of "salt water gas," which soon blew off and in some cases a slight showing of oil. These gas showings, found further down the dip than oil, are the results of the ability of water to take gas into solution at the rate of about 3 per cent. by volume at atmospheric pressure and proportionally larger quantities, if available, at higher pressures (measured on the absolute scale). The outstanding features in Pennsylvania and New York during the past year were the buying of acreage for water-flooding in other Pennsylyania fields than the Bradford and Allegany districts, the wide adoption and use of the five-spot plan of development and water-flooding in the Bradford and Allegany districts, the discovery of gas production in the Onondaga lime in southwestern New York and the opening of the T. W. Phillips Gas & Oil Co. Fifth Sand pool in Butler County, Pennsylvania. Water-flooding has occurred in many other fields than the Bradford, Pa., and Allegany, N. Y., fields. In some the flood was a natural encroachment of edge water, in others the water was introduced into the productive sand through wells either accidentally or intentionally. Most of these floods have not been commercially successful. There has been some interest aroused in the Clarendon field, Warren County, Pennsylvania, by a new and apparently successful flood and other floods have been begun. Five-spotting in the Bradford and Allegany fields is the plan of water-flood development under which the area to be drilled is laid off in a grid of equal-sized squares with water intakes located at each corner of the squares and oil wells located in the centers of the squares. So far there are two five-spot water floods that are, beyond doubt,, commercial successes. There were 600 acres under five-spot flooding at the end of 1928, as against 150 at the end of 1927. By the end of 1929 there will be a total of between 1200 and 1500 acres five-spotted unless a low market for Pennsylvania grade crude oil develops. An increase of 6000 bbl. in average daily production is expected to accompany this development in 1929. The Belmont-Quadrangle Drilling Corpn. found the Onondaga lime or a higher strata at 3995 ft. north of Bolivar, Cattaraugus Country, N. Y., and a number of miles from any other important gas production. When drilled to 4006 ft. the well yielded 3,500,000 cu. ft. of gas and when shut in 1700 Ib. rock pressure. Fourteen years ago, J. B. Warriner presented before the Institute a paper on anthracite stripping,' describing the progress of stripping in the Anthracite Region from its beginning with an old quarry stripping at Summit Hill, which was operated more than a century ago, through various types of strippings used in 1917. This paper will briefly review the status of anthracite stripping methods from 1917 to the present day and describe in detail the stripping operation of The Hudson Coal CO. at Clinton collicry. It is not intended as a review of the work in the district—that would require a much longer paper. History and Statistics Mr. Warriner said, in part: "The sizes of shovels have gradually increased until now 70 and 80-ton shovels are the rule and larger equipment is coming in." He also referred to a large electrically operated dragline which weighed about 225 tons and had an operating radius of 125 ft. In 1917, a number of strippings used shovels of various sizes, ranging up to the 60 Marion and Bucyrus 70-C railroad type. Material was hauled away in narrow-gage side dumpers, usually of 4 or 5 cu. yd. capacities. Star-type churn drills with 4-in. bits were generally used for drilling purposes. Since 1917 wages in the anthracite field; have increased, but the higher operating costs of strippings are now being successfully combated by continuous improvements in stripping equipment, such as the development of the caterpillar or crawler shovels, the use of larger cars, better drilling equipment, the introduction of shovels of increased capacity and the adoption, in a number of instances, of standard-gage equipment for transportation. In 1918 another large dragline was introduced in the southern fields, which had been in service in the Middle West and is in use today, dipping vertically about 180 ft. to raise coal out of a stripping. About 1918, small shovels with caterpillar traction were introduced. In 1922 the 6-in. well drills began replacing the 4-in. drills, with an attendant saving to the operators. About the same time A. Retreat mining, using yielding steel friction props, over a 7-year period has been successful at a uranium mine operated by Hecla Mining Co. in southeast Utah. The support system allows good roof control, maximum profit, complete extraction, and good ventilation. Unusual subsidence observations were made in that some of the surface was raised rather than lowered. Longwall mining, commonly practiced in European coal mines, has a potential of broader application because of mechanization possibilities and better roof control and ventilation at greater depths. The Radon mine was one of the first American metal mines to use yielding steel props for supporting the relaxed core of the pressure arch which is induced by retreating longwall mining. Full caving was induced. After more than 7 years of stoping experience, the method has proved very satisfactory for the conditions encountered. The mine and method have been described in references listed in the bibliography. U.S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8004 by Wilbert Dare and Philip Lindstrom gives the most information. Stoping experience at this mine indicates that there are many advantages to be gained by using yielding supports; such as in safety, timber cost, roof control, ventilation, ore dilution, and low cost per pound of metal produced. Subsidence measurements show that the surface will rise rather than slump in some areas over the mine. This appears to be an unusual observation and is presented as a new development in subsidence studies. The Radon mine is located 35 miles southeast of Moab, Utah in the north end of the Big Indian mining district in San Juan County. Hecla Mining Co. operated the mine from early 1955 to early 1964 through an operating agreement with Federal Resources, Inc. Development consisted of a 3-compartment, 690-ft shaft, 4 main levels driven on the ore horizon and a haulage level below the ore. Evaluation of physical and economic factors showed that this flat-dipping ore occurrence could be mined by a low-cost coal mining method. The value of the deposit was high and unusual premiums were possible by clean mining. Reaching the miner with safety education" is R the ultimate goal, the main objective, of every safety program in the mining industry. If we can get safety education to every worker, and it is properly learned, enforced and obeyed, we should eliminate at least 85% of all potential accidents. We should then have very few accidents as a result of unsafe behavior, which, in turn, would allow us to concentrate most of our future efforts on preventing the types of accidents which are caused by faulty or defective machinery, equipment, tools and materials. An uninformed or uninitiated person would think that it should be a rather simple process to reach the miner with a safety education. Theoretically he would be right because here we get involved in a matter of semantics. When we say "reaching the miner with safety education" we actually mean that this education must also be accepted and learned by the miner; we intend to mean that safety must be observed and followed at all times. But in order to realize our complete meaning of the phrase, we must find the solution for a number of problems and obstacles which are well known to management and safety personnel.

IN the classical picture of recrystallization the growth of strain-free grains at the expense of a strained and work hardened matrix is responsible for the softening of cold worked metals on annealing. It has been commonly assumed that the release of the stored energy of cold work, softening, and re-orientation take place simultaneously, as the high angle boundaries of the new recrystallized grains sweep over the cold worked matrix. However, recent evidence indicates',' that, at least in some cases, considerable or even complete soften- ing may take place essentially without reorientation (i.e., without the migration of ordinary high angle grain boundaries, or "recrystallization'') and the release of most of the stored energy of cold work may precede softening. These cases suggest that the property changes, taking place during the annealing of cold worked metals, may be associated with various distinct processes. The study of such situations is of considerable interest, since quantitative data are still scarce. In the present work, isothermal softening curves were determined for a heavily rolled aluminum single crystal, under such conditions that no "recrystallization" occurred until after complete softening. The hardness data were correlated with X-ray diffraction pinhole patterns in order to detect any reorientation that may occur and with measure-

THE annual meeting of the Auxiliary to the A. I. M. E. was marked by the most delightful cordiality and warm spirit of welcome on the part of the members of the New York Section and an equally charming spirit of cooperation and appreciation on the part of the visitors. On Monday Mrs. Ernest H. Wolfes and Mrs. Charles A. Bohn had charge of registration and most efficiently .provided everyone with the necessary tickets and badges. The reception hall and regisfration booth were gay with beautiful flowers that reflected the welcoming spirit one found there. The smooth efficiency with which the whole program ran was due largely to the tireless efforts of Mrs. Donald M. Liddell and Mrs. Louis D. Huntoon, joint chairmen of the Ladies' Committee, and Miss Margaret Callow, chairman of the Junior Committee. A useful accelerated weathering test should be capable of placing any series of metals quantitatively in the same order of endurance as that noted under a particular set of actual exposure conditions. The development of such a test must necessarily depend to a considerable extent upon data obtained from a wide variety of exposures. This paper offers preliminary data from exposure tests on nine metals placed in 11 locations in the Lehigh Valley, within a radius of 20 miles from Palmerton. The exposure conditions vary from a severe industrial atmosphere to a pure rural atmosphere. The data are offered as evidence of the necessity for the identification and evaluation of the variables of corrosion and as illustration of some of the variations to be considered in the development of a useful accelerated test. It is quite clear, from this evidence, that a useful accelerated test must be versatile to the extent of showing the probable variations of corrosion resulting from differences in atmosphere as well as from differences in the metals. The paper is presented solely with the object of pointing out the wide variations in relative merits of several common metals in resisting corrosion and without any thought of initiating controversy regarding the merits of particular metals. For this reason the metals are designated only by symbols in the tables and no key is given to these symbols. Test Procedure Specimens, 4 by 6 in., were cut to accurate dimensions from each of the following metals or alloys: aluminum, ascoloy, copper, copper steel, galvanized iron, and zinc. Additional grades of these metals bring the total to nine types. Since it was impossible to obtain the required number of copper-steel specimens having equal surface conditions of rust and scale, it was thought advisable to pickle these specimens in a hot solution of 10 per cent. sulfuric acid. All other specimens were carefully cleaned in ether and alcohol and weighed just prior to exposure. Four specimens of each type of metal were mounted on a test rack by means of porcelain insulators. The cycle of eruptives makes one wonder, "Where's the basalt?" and the youthfulness of the Idaho flows suggests they may yet come. Veins and Dikes.-Veins and dikes seem to be closely aligned in the minds of some authors, while to me they appear quite distinct, the first representing quiet, long-continued action, typified by metasomatic replacement, far removed from volcanic action; the latter, sudden and cyclonic, emanating from the heart of vulcanism. The rock openings occupied by both types were formed by kindred forces, but in the one they were closed for indefinite periods before invasion by the solfataric solutions, and in the other their formation and occupation were simultaneous. Open Fissures.-I do not believe in the existence of open spaces of discission that may be occupied by veins. Occasionally they occur; I found one with. a machine drill 350 ft. below surface, fortunately in an adit; the water spouted for 12 ft. in a 6-in stream for nearly 24 hr. It was only a flattish fissure, 6 in. wide, crossing the perpendicular vein, and indicating how tabular veins of ore might be formed. The practical absence of open fissures should be a joy to miners. We all know the misgivings with which we feel about for an old winze having only 30 ft. of water in it, in an unsurveyed and inaccessible part of a mine. It is said that veins are sometimes formed in open spaces left by Protuberances of the walls, which meet after having been displaced; but I believe that in such circumstances there would be sufficient attrition and brecciated material to fill the fissure, though perhaps loosely. Parts of veins may possibly have been formed in originally open spaces, but if so, the spaces were made by solution shortly preceding the deposition of the veins. That total solution of rock adjacent to a fissure may occur under favorable conditions is proved by the existence of large bodies of sulphide which contain only a few per cent. of silica; while on the same level, and in other levels above and below, all being within the same ore shoot, assays may show as much as 50 to 60 per cent. of silica, although the gold, silver and copper assays may be almost identical in all the

Standard free energies of formation of WO,, W O W20058 and WO3from oxygen and the lower oxide or tungsten have been determined in the tempel-ature range of 700° to 1220°C. A tentative W-O phase diagmm is presented based on the evidence that the oxide phases, "W18O49" and "W20058", are unstable at l~atm total pressure, below 585° and 485°C:, respectively. A HE need for a complete quantitative treatment of the phase equilibria of the W-O system has been establishedby metallurgists during the past few years. In an attempt to improve the endurance of tungsten exposed to oxidizing atmospheres at high temperatures, many research groups have studied the kinetics of tungsten oxidation. The reverse process, the reduction of the tungsten oxides to metal, has also been investigated to some extent. Regardless of the particular interest, metal to oxide or oxide to metal, a knowledge of the phase equilibria of the W-O system is required to properly interpret all of the kinetic observations. It should be possible to state the stable phases of the W-O system at any given values of the chemical potential of oxygen and the temperature.
