Floris Osmond, Honorary Member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, born in Paris, March 10, 1849, died at Saint-Leu near that city, June 18, 1912. Taken suddenly ill with congestion of the brain while on his way from Paris to his home, he reached it in time to write on the typewriter his last wishes, one of which was that no biographical notice of his life should be published. Holding Osmond's memory sacred, as those who have known him will, is it our duty to conform with his desire ? Shall no mention be made in our Transactions of the beautiful life and great achievements of one of our most honored members? Is it not, on the contrary, incumbent upon us to disregard Osmond's instruction in this matter and to place on record our admiration for the nobility of his life, for his talents and for the importance of his work, that younger men may be inspired by it with a desire to be guided by worthy motives in the path of unselfish pursuits ? I cannot feel that in following this course I am disloyal to Osmond's memory and I am strengthened in this belief by the opinion of men of high honor whom I have consulted before undertaking the writing of this obituary notice. One of them, Professor Henry M. Howe, justifies my decision better than I could do it myself when he writes : " Let us look frankly at the matter. Here we have a most extraordinary life, a life of rare beauty and power of inspiration to the rest of mankind. In my opinion we should not deprive mankind of the stimulating influence of the example of M. Osmond simply because he shrank from publicity. Our young men see every day how greed and vulgar push succeed, and with what material rewards they are crowned. They see too rarely the more valuable crown which comes to self devotion. A permanent and public recognition of the beautiful qualities of Osmond's life cannot fail to appeal to the imagination of young men and to help to deflect them toward leading a noble rather than a sordid life. Therefore I feel that the Revue de Métallurgie and other bodies owe it to the public to give prominence to his career by means of biographical notices."

The performance of the nine 5.5 m diameter x 6.4 m mills (18 x 21 ft) initially installed at Bougainville Copper Ltd. did not meet the laboratory and pilot plant derived design expectations as measured by Bond Work Index. During the post-commissioning period, inefficient grinding of coarse material resulted in a build-up of large circulating loads and led to reduced throughputs because of pump and cyclone overloading. Installation of larger pumps and cyclones and development of an improved circuit control philosophy alleviated materials handling problems and permitted higher tonnages to be attained. Since 1977, plant throughput has been increased by installation of three additional mills. These are 0.9 m (2.9 ft) longer than the other nine and have a higher capacity. Developments in classification and mill speed-up, together with a finer ball mill feed size and substantial improvements to mill availability (99% in 1982) have further increased plant capacity. There is a continuing emphasis on improving grinding circuit efficiency in terms of throughput/grind. Current development work includes trials of graded ball charges, different liner profiles, and assessment of scalping/regrind proposals.

While the users of magnesite in this country are at a disadvantage as to cost by reason of not having any large bodies of sufficiently pure material at hand, the manufacturing concern referred to has secured an advantage as to quality by a mixture of the different foreign magnesites, which vary considerably in their composition and physical structure. The measurement of the rate of flow of liquids through sands dates back to 1856, when H. d Arcyb, a French physicist, carried out his classic experiments on the flow of water through sand layers. The earliest recorded data on relationships of pressure to flow of fluids through porous rocks in this country are those of Newell 23 in 1885. The first comprehensive studies of flow were made in 1898 by King15, who measured the rate of flow of water and air through consolidated and uncon-solidated sands and published the results. From 1900 to 1920 there appears to have been little interest in permeability. In 1920 the increase in demand for oil led the U. S. Bureau of Mines to begin a series of experiments to determine subsurface relationships of oil and water and the characteristics of their flow. Mills18 studied the relationship of flow of liquids to text- and structure of the sands, and Melcher17 in 1925 made a quantitative study of effect of changes in pressure on rate of flow of crude oil through Oklahoma oil sands. Since 1930 the importance of flow measurements to production of oil and gas has been emphasized by a large number of excellent investigations. Among these the works of Fettke9.10, BarbI.2, Cloud6, Nutting24-", Bot-set4, Nevin22, Tickell32.33, Fancher, Lewis and Barnes8, Moore, Schilthuis and Hurst19, and Wyckoff, Botset and Muskat"-39 have contributed much to our knowledge of the technique of permeability measurements and to the laws of liquid and gas flow through porous sands. The application of their work has led to the establishment of laboratories for measuring the permeability and porosity of oil sands by most of the large companies. All the investigations, except those of Wyckoff, Botset and Muskat, and Moore, Schilthuis and Hurst deal with linear flow; that is, flow in a more or less straight line through a given cross-sectional area of sand. In the anthracite fields of Pennsylvania, mine fires occur with more or less regularity and their existence is an ever-present hazard in coal mining. In all probability 90 per cent. of the mine fires can be ascribed directly or indirectly to the ordinary miner's open lamp. Other causes may be smoking, electrical installations, gas explosions, gas feeders, and the communication of fire to the outcrops from ash dumps, culm banks, timber and brush fires. Fires in pump rooms, engine rooms, and barns have been largely eliminated as a result of the Act of Assembly, approved June 15, 1911, which provides that all inside buildings, including engine rooms, pump rooms, barns, etc., shall be constructed of incombustible materials. Smoking of pipes, cigars, and cigarettes should be prohibited in the mines and too much care cannot be exercised in preventing fires by enforcing all rules designed for that purpose. Mine fires that involve underground fighting are invariably dangerous, and all fires, irrespective of the method pursued in extinguishing them, involve property loss and expense. Each fire generally presents a more or less original problem, dependent on the particular conditions. Generally mine fires may be divided into two classes: Those occurring in inaccessible workings and those occurring in accessible workings. The methods pursued in extinguishing or controlling mine fires are as follows: (I) direct attack, (2) smothering by sealing, (3) flushing with silt or other solids, (4) flooding with water, (5) cutting off, (6) surrounding with incombustible materials, (7) digging out by stripping from the surface. Most fires arc extinguished in their incipiency by direct attack and failure to extinguish by this method is due to late discovery, lack of water, and facilities for fighting, or improper procedure in the initial attack. Should the method first pursued be unsuccessful, careful consideration should be given in determining next the method to be adopted; then the work should be carried on as rapidly as possible and under the supervision of the most competent persons. Materials and supplies should be furnished without delay and in sufficient quantities for the work to be accomplished.

POPULAR opinion, as it might be termed, has always been of the trend that a flotation reagent added to the ball mill during grinding would be more thoroughly mixed with the pulp and for that reason more effective in the production of low tailing. That there are other effects, inimical to good flotation, when using so-called chemical reagents, is brought out by the series of tests outlined in Table 2. It was defi-nitely proved that if either the T. T. mixture (20 per cent thiocarbanalid-80 per cent orthotoluidin) or po-tassium xanthate were added to the ball mill the result-ing flotation concentrate would be lower in copper and higher in insoluble than the concentrate produced by adding these same reagents without the ball mill cir-cuit. With the T. T. mixture four sets of tests were made. The screen analyses of the flotation feed show that there was very little difference in the original grind-ing. When the T. T. mixture was added to the head of the flotation machine the flotation concentrate had a little over 61 per cent solids -200 mesh. If the mix-ture was put into the ball mill the flotation concentrate had but 40.7 per cent of the solids -200 mesh for one set of tests, and 49.0 per cent for the other set. With the mixture at the head of flotation the total concen-trate was high in copper (34.715 and 36.525 per cent) and low in insoluble (13.20 and 11.61 per cent). The assay of the concentrate when the T. T. mixture was introduced into the ball mill was what might be termed low in copper (29.389 and 30.833 per cent). In one of these 'sets of tests (periods 8 to 11, third column) the insoluble was high, 16.81 per cent. The other run (peri-ods 12 to 15, fourth column) for some unknown reason shows a low insoluble, 12.72 per cent. With similar grinding the addition of potassium xan-thate to flotation produced a concentrate having 62.8 per cent -200 mesh, whereas with the potassium xanthate added to the ball mill the flotation concentrate was very coarse, only 36.4 per cent passing 200 mesh. The difference in the total assay of the concentrate is remarkable ; 35.847 per cent copper when the xanthate went to flotation and 30.44 per cent copper when the xanthate was added to the ball mill; insoluble, 10.94 per cent in the former instance, as 22.15 per cent in the latter.

With the exception of the mentions of coal in Illinois in the period 1660-1680, already referred to, the first coal found in the United States was in the James River, Virginia, field. In 1699 a large tract of .land above the present city of Richmond was allotted for a settlement of French Huguenots by the colonial, government, near the present Manakin, about fourteen miles above Richmond. They soon found coal, tradition says it was uncovered by a hunter pulling out a small tree in a. steel) bank near a stream, and Colonel William Byrd, F.R.S., the most prominent man of his day in the colony, wrote to the Colonial Council of Virginia, May 10 and 11, 1701: "The 10th of May, last., I with Coll. Randolph, Capt. Epes, Capt. Webb, &c., went up to the new settlements of ye French Refugees at ye Manaken Town.... We went tip to ye Cole, w'ch is not above a mile and a half from their settlement on the great upper Creeke, w'ch, riseing very high in great Raines hath washed away the Banks that the Coal lyes bare, otherwise it's very deep in the Earth, the land being very high, and near the surface is plenty of Slate.", Some of the Frenchmen were evidently familiar with the use of coal, as on May 22, 1702, "David Menestrier a black smith and one of ye french Refugees Inhabiting at Luciana Petitioning his Excellency that he may have leave to use ye coal mines lately discovered there for his forge his Excellency by and with ye advice of ye Council loth hereby give Leave to ye said David Menestrier to take what coales he shall want. out of ye said Coal mine for ye use of his forge according to ye Prayer of ye said Petition."2 There was some uncertainty about the grant of these lands to the Huguenots which caused the request for leave to use this coal, as a Virginia patent in its usual form allowed the owner to mine all minerals excepting gold and silver, which were subject to royalties for the Crown. After the visit to the coal above mentioned, "Wm. Byrd, understanding the land had not been granted to the French, took out a patent for 344 acres, including the same, (the coal) which patent was dated October 20, 1704".3

THE CHAIRMAN (A. F. Lucas, Washington, D. C.).-Mr. Matteson has stated that the drilling of certain deep wells has proved a failure because they were abandoned too soon. He advises drilling more wells around salt domes, in the hope of finding additional oil sands. I have had some experience on the domes and believe that by drilling shallow wells, one loses time and money. I have advanced the opinion -that by drilling central wells in the -most likely location of a dome, showing is certain weakness, a better result could be obtained. I have in mind one locality where Mr. Knapp drilled a well through the salt¬the only location that I know of on the Gulf Coast where oil was found underneath the salt. Mr. Knapp found a great deal of gas in it. The salt itself was impregnated with oil and gas; and my opinion is that in such instances, instead of drilling so many wells around a dome, if you will attack at a weak point to as great a depth as a drill will go, the results will he much better. At present we have instances where drills have penetrated to 7300 or 7400 ft. in depth. Why couldn't the rich companies that are operating around the Gulf Coast arrange to get some special drilling apparatus and drill with the rotary first for, say, 3000 to 4000 ft., always in the likely location, and then proceed with the cable? I think we need just such work. In Mr. Matteson's paper lie quotes from an author whose writings in the Federal Bulletin and in the Louisiana Bulletins have been quite extensive. He states that oil and asphalt have originally been found on the surface of those domes. I have been over and examined nearly all of those domes (not all of them, because many have been developed in the last few years) and found no such occurrence at the time; and in the old well-known humps or big hills, as they generally called them; I have never found either salines or asphalt or petroleum. In only' one instance it looked as though asphalt night have exuded out of the ground, and that was in the Sour Lake, but right in that neighborhood years previous to that a company had operated commercially-they had a little refinery there-and had found it so unprofitable that they pulled up stakes and quit.

Holbrook led a discussion on the unionization of engineers, stating that he had learned that professional engineers were being forced into unions by subprofessionals. Flag Day Celebrations Develop Practical Patriotism Among the hundreds of industries which celebrated Flag Day on June 14, were a number of mines, and a report- from the United States Smelting, Refining and Mining Co. tells how the programs were carried out at Mammoth and Chrome. In the first place, Flag Day was not observed by knocking off work, but by short exercises, after which work was resumed with re-doubled energy. In this crisis, that method of showing devotion to the flag and country might be termed "practical patriotism." In other words, it could be expressed as "Hats off to the flag and sleeves up for it." Harry Hunt, first-aid man at the Mammoth mine, reports that the flag raising was marked by the spirit of high enthusiasm, which included every man, woman and child belonging to the camp. "The miners in their working clothes, still wearing their carbide lamps on their caps, with faces covered with dirt, just as they came from the mine, and the ladies and children with their bits of bright color, made a picture worthy of the brush of a master painter. The program rendered was that arranged by the National Bureau of Education." First came a bugle call, "To the Colors," given by Assistant Superintendent C. W. Plumb. Then Foreman Carpenter W. R. (Bill) Young, raised the stars and stripes to the peak, and as the banner unfurled to the breeze, all heads were bared, and the salute was given by the workers, whose toil at home is strengthening our army in France. Then the miners joined in the singing of the "Star Spangled Banner," and repeated the "Pledge of Allegiance," and the "American's Creed." Shift-boss W. J. Phinazee then addressed his fellow workers, telling them how the flag stands for their protection and that of their loved ones, and how it should be loved and respected, not only by the native born, but by all who live here under its protection. Those of alien birth, who have come here because of the greater opportunities offered in America, owe a special honor to the stars and stripes, and the point was made that these men from other lands should not love their old home less, but their adopted country more. The majority of those present were foreigners, and their hearty applause showed that they appreciated the point made by their shift-boss, who, because of his position, was able to address them as man to man.

THE development of the extensive Southeast Missouri deposits greatly preceded that of the Iowa and Wisconsin deposits. It began about 1720 at Mine La Motte and other localities, and has continued uninterruptedly to the present time. It is estimated that this district produced about 184,000 tons of lead in the year 1916, having a value of approximately, $25,000,000. This is a new high record. The Southwest Missouri orebodies were hardly known before 1845 and were not extensively developed until 1870: Lead production in South-west Missouri for 1916 was 38,788 tons. Oklahoma produced 14,399 ,tons and Kansas 2,345 tons, making a total for Southwest Missouri, and the adjoining districts in Oklahoma and Kansas, of 55,532 tons of lead. The first metallurgists in Missouri were the Indian and the hunter. The early settler learned to procure his bullets either by melting ore in his camp fire or by throwing pieces of galena on an old stump and depending on the usual roasting and reaction method to obtain the metal. A little more refined method was to arrange two flat stones in the form of a V. Wood and galena were placed in the furnace and ignited. As heat developed, some of the metal was extracted and molded into bullets. The next step in utilizing the lead ores was the log hearth. All lead in Missouri was smelted in this crude affair before 1820. It was built on sloping ground, and consisted of a hearth of stone, surrounded on the front and two sides by a stone wall. The wall was 7 ft. high in front. The top and rear end were left open and in front an arch or opening was made, forming the eye of the furnace. In front of this a pit was dug in the ground, to receive the molten metal. Large logs were rolled in at the back and made to rest upon ledges formed inside, to raise them from the hearth and to give a draft. These logs filled the entire width of the furnace. Small split logs were then set up around the two sides and the front, and the ore was piled on until the furnace was full. Finally, the mass was covered with logs and fuel until the ore was completely surrounded. A gentle heat was started, which was raised very gradually. After 12 hr. the heat was increased and continued for 12 hr. more, 24 hr. being required, for each smelting. The furnace treated about 5,000 lb. per 24 hr. and the ore yielded about 50 per cent. of its metallic lead. A considerable quantity of the ore was not desulphurized, and fell between

AXnealing twins are common in the microstructure of copper that has been rolled and recrystallized. In such samples it follows that a twin relationship should exist between components of the re-crystallization texture,' and several examples of this have been reported. For example, twin relationships have been found in recrystallized electrolytic copper sheet, as indicated in Fig. I, from a paper by Coheur and Lejeune.2 In this pole figure the cube texture (100) [001] is indicated by the hollow squares in the lower half of the figure (the pole figure for 200 reflections) and in the upper, (III), part of the figure. The texture contains, in addition to this orientation, the first-order twins of it, shown in the figure by the filled triangles. This orientation relation has been suggested by others also, under certain annealing conditions,3'4 although pole figures have not been published to confirm it. Some orientations in recrystallized sheets are identical with their twins, because of the symmetry elements of the texture— this is true, for example, with the (113) [ZII] texture so commonly reported for brass—hence it appears impossible in such samples to decide whether the twin relationships result from twinning or merely from the symmetry of the deformation process. The present investigation of a commercial copper strip seems to yield an example in which annealing twins account unambiguously for the principal orientations present. It proves to be a case, also, for which the recrystallization texture cannot be viewed as derived from the deformation texture by a first or second-order twinning mechanism. Materials and Methods The samples investigated were of secondary copper (melted in belgium) to which 0.19 per cent iron had been added to raise the recrystallization temperature. How much the orientation characteristics of this metal can be ascribed to the iron content and how much to other impurities or to melting and pouring practice have not been investigated.* The rolling was done in one direction only, on a mill with rolls of about 20-cm diameter. A strip I. cm wide was reduced from 5 mm thickness to 0.05 mm by several cold passes at commercial speeds. The samples cut from this 99 per cent reduced strip were X-rayed throughout their entire thickness. A pole figure made soon after rolling and annealing was identical, within experimental error, with one that was made when a two-year interval occurred between rolling and annealing. Publications concerning scaling laws for laboratory flow models of oil reservoirs indicate that the relative permeability and capillary pressure relations must be the same functions of saturation in the model and its prototype. In this paper, the relative permeabilities and saturations are redefined in a way which permits one to have diflerent relative permeability and capillary pressure relations in the model and prototype. The development of the new scaling criteria is demonstrated by deriving scaling laws for one simple flow problem. INTRODUCTION The successful application of information gathered through bench-scale model studies to the prediction of multi-phase fluid flow behavior in petroleum reservoirs requires careful consideration of the scaling criteria. The requirements which must be met for a small-scale model to duplicate the behavior of a much larger reservoir prototype have been discussed by Leverett, et al,' Rapoport,2 and Geertsma, et al.3 According to these authors, the relative permeabilities to water, oil and gas and the dimensionless capillary pressures must be the must have the same values in the model and prototype. Furthermore, they point out that the viscosity ratios must have the same values in the model and prototype. In addition to these requirements, other scaling criteria are given which, when considered, usually dictate a much higher permeability in the model than exists in the reservoir. Since the more permeable model sands may have connate-water and residual oil saturations quite different from those in the prototype, the scaling requirements pertaining to the dependence of relative permeabilities and dimension l ess capillary pressures on saturation usually are not met. Also, if the model fluids are selected to give equal viscosity ratios in the model and prototype, one may find greatly different mobility ratios* in the two cases and, therefore, may expect grossly different flow patterns. For this reason, Craig, et al,' correlated the results of their model studies with mo- bility ratio rather than with viscosity ratio. As yet, however, no satisfactory method has been advanced which permits use of anything other than the scaling requirements outlined in the previously mentioned papers. The purpose of this paper is to present a method of developing a set of scaling criteria which permits different relationships between saturation and relative permeability or capillary pressure in the model and prototype. Rather than attempt to report scaling criteria for a variety of practical situations, this paper demonstrates by use of one simple example how the modified scaling criteria are derived.

Three borides of zirconium have been reported: ZrB,l ZrB2,2,3 and ZrB12, 4 The phase relationships, ranges of stability, and some physical properties of these compounds are described. THE zirconium borides differ considerably from one another, particularly with respect to their relative stabilities at high temperatures in the presence of carbon.4,5 ZrB2 is extremelv stable at all temperatures (to the melting point) in contact with carbon. Both ZrB and ZrB12 tend to decompose at elevated temperatures when carbon is present in excess of about 0.5 pct. ZrB forms ZrB2 and ZrC, and ZrB12 decomposes to form ZrB2 and a boron-carbide phase. In the ZrB12 preparation, boron present in excess of that needed to form ZrB2 reacts with carbon, if present, to form carbides, in preference to forming the higher boride. Similar instability of borides, other than diborides of the transition metals of the 4th and 5th groups of the periodic table, has been reported.5,6 special precautions had, therefore, to be taken to minimize carbon contamination in the preparation of ZrB and ZrB12. Reactions below 1400°C were carried out by heating powdered mixtures of zirconium hydride and boron in quartz tubes in a hydrogen atmosphere. For temperatures above 1400°C, reactions were carried out in graphite molds. Carbon contamination from the molds was minimized by employing extremely rapid heating rates to reduce carbon diffusion into the body of the specimen, and by subsequent "shaving" of sample surfaces that had been in contact with the graphite dies. A heating rate of about 2000°C per min was obtained by heating the dies (by direct conduction), using a current of 40,000 amp. Although this type of heating cycle apparently allowed little time for "homogenization," close approximations to equilibrium conditions were usually obtained as a result of the very strongly exothermic reactions between zirconium hydride and boron at elevated temperatures. Reproducibility of results in repeated runs under varying conditions was taken as a reasonable indication that equilibrium conditions had been effectively achieved. Quenching was accomplished by rapidly immersing the entire die, containing the reaction products, in water. Specimens could also be cooled at controlled rates by adjustment of the rate of flow of water through the water-cooled copper electrodes in contact with the graphite dies.

Yet since the turn of the century coal preparation engineers have repeatedly sought more sophisticated performance criteria that could be used to draw comparisons between different cleaning operations and to permit generalizations about types of cleaning equipment or kinds of coal. Proliferation of efficiency formulas resulted. Hardly a year goes by, and certainly not an International Coal Preparation Congress, without the introduction of some new formula or some new concept of an existing criterion. This is merely the usual quest for improvement, because the performance criteria available today, although highly useful, are imperfect. Moreover, they are not as widely understood as they might be. The First International Coal Preparation Conference, which was held in Paris in 1950, accomplished a great deal toward establishing uniformity in terminology and methods of expressing cleaning results; the proceedings of that conference provide a wealth of detailed information on the various performance criteria, their uses and their limitations. For ease of discussion, the various performance criteria can conveniently be classed according to the degree to which they are dependent on the density composition of the raw coal treated. Some are directly dependent, some are only indirectly dependent, and some are, under certain circum- stances, essentially independent. DEPENDENT CRITERIA The yield and ash content of a washed coal are directly dependent on the washability characteristics of the raw coal from which it is derived. Thus, they are manifestly unsuited to comparing the performance of different plants, because no two plant feeds are the same. In fact, yield and ash content, by themselves, are inadequate for even routine day-to-day control. The continuous variation that occurs in the amount of impurity in raw coal, and sometimes in the float ash, make it impossible to tell whether a reduction in yield or an increase in the ash content of the washed coal results from any malfunction or misadjustment of the cleaning equipment. Recovery Efficiency For many years the most popular performance criteria that are only indirectly dependent on the washability characteristics of the raw coal have been efficiency formulas.
