In 1855, Franz Uchatius patented, in England, his process of manufacturing cast steel. The first experiments, on a practical scale, were made at the Ebbw Vale Iron Works, Monmouthshire. The charge consisted of a mixture of cast iron with about 20 per cent. of a pure iron ore, and with or without other ingredients. In order to obtain the cast iron in a subdivided condition, Uchatius granulated molten pig-metal by running it into water, which during the operation was kept well agitated, and found that "the finer the iron is granulated, the softer will be the resulting steel." The writer is not aware that granulated iron has been used practically, otherwise than in the above-named process; and until 1866 no other process of subdividing iron than by granulation was known. In April, 1866, an English patent was obtained by the writer for subdividing blast-furnace and other slags and metals in a molten condition, by passing the same through one or more pairs of rolls. In reference to iron the idea was, in following up the direction pointed out by the Uchatius process, to obtain better results in the puddling process by means of a thorough amalgamation (not simply a mixture) of the iron with the oxides and other ingredients in the charge itself. Experiments were made. A quantity of iron direct from the blastfurnace was subdivided (or laminated) by passing it through a pair of plain rolls. The rolls were hollow, and water was made to pass through them to keep them sufficiently cool. Without giving differential speed to the rolls, sheets were obtained about one-sixteenth inches thick, and from about one hundred square inches surface, downwards. Although the first application of strip mining dates back to 1866, the true origin of today's problem of land reclamation is found in World War II, when the yawning war machines demanded more, and faster fuel production. To meet the new wartime demands, the strip coal mining companies that had been producing coal for the normal needs of industry and commerce during peacetime worked to the full extent of their capacities but were unable to satisfy the voracious demand. To supplement the production of the established mining firms, a host of temporary, make-shift coal strip operations came into being-road contractors, ditchers and foundation excavators, earth movers of every type became strip coal operators. Unfortunately, many were of the here-today-gone-tomorrow category, and showed little concern for the condition of the land after mining. Likewise, the land owners of the mined properties (most of the land was on royalty lease or tonnage contract) showed little concern. Land owners realized from their acreages more income during the war years of coal production than could have been obtained in two or three lifetimes of conventional farming or other land uses. Most of these mined lands were sub-marginal with little productive promise. As a result the wartime stripping produced most of what are known today as "orphan banks" or "abandoned strip pits." It is of these that so much of the present day complaints about strip mine reclamation are being made.

THE technique of handling drilling muds varies somewhat, partly because of personal factors but mainly because of differences in forma-tion, the type of problems met with, and the general drilling conditions in different localities. The much greater depths to which bore holes are now carried have made necessary closer attention to and great modifications of all aspects of drilling-mud technique. Increased depth means smaller hole, smaller drill pipe, smaller clearances, higher pumping pressures, higher differen-tial pressures between shows and the mud column, less accurate control of the weight of the mud column, delayed receipt of formation data, and poorer samples. It means longer delays and greater hazards in rectifying mistakes or dealing with accidental occurrences. Equipment on a larger scale is necessary and more pains must be taken with layout. Lastly, the budget costs of raw materials have risen to high figures and economy of time and of direct monetary expenditure have come to mean much more than formerly. A mud laboratory is now part of the essential establishment of a modern oil field and to it current problems can be submitted for the most thorough investigation. The detailed chemical properties of all mate-rials purchased or quarried have to be investigated. Detailed data on the physical properties have to be ascertained and research on improve-ment of material and its most efficient use has to be carried out. In this paper we propose to discuss the main mud problems with which we have to deal in Iran, some of which are peculiar to our local conditions while others are of the general type common to all workers in this subject.

DESPITE the very small number of engineers who can get away from their tasks to New York, a point so far from the Mid-Continent and Cali-fornia oil fields, where the real important, engineering progress in the industry is being made, the attendance was remarkably good, and it was generally remarked that all the sessions were "snappy," and there was no drag. This was largely because, under instructions from the chairman, very few papers were permitted to be read, and the "high lights" of each paper were pre-sented orally as an introduction to the large and varied discussions, many of which were prepared in advance. The round table discussion on petroleum engineering research problems, conducted by W. E. Wrather, proved a greater success than was anticipated, considering the difficulty in getting many of the men to discuss such problems. There has been no crystallization of opinion heretofore of what are important engineering research problems, as distinguished from pure science problems, and a digest of the discussion will be made available so as to present the results obtained. It is hoped that further round table discussions, as well as committee work, in the meantime summarizing problems appear-ing in papers published the last two to three years, will enable the oil industry to determine intelligently which of the problems are most important for immediate attack. The roundtable discussion on petroleum engineering educational problems, conducted by H. C. George of the University of Oklahoma, was equally fruitful, and since managers of companies, consulting engineers, and pro-fessors cooperated in these sessions, a cross-section of their opinions on improving the curricula for training the large number of petroleum engineers, which the industry can absorb in-the next few years, was obtained.

I have read with much interest the elaborate and able paper of Messrs. Granger and Treville on the Mining Districts of Colombia, presented at the Atlantic City Meeting (ante, p. 33). Going into detail, however, as the paper does—and particularly with reference to the department of Antioquia, I am somewhat surprised that the property of the Frontino and Bolivia Company, probably one of the richest and most extensive in Colombia, should come off with such scant notice. The entire property embraces an area of some 28 square miles, and is situated at a distance of about 2 leagues from Remedios—after Medellin probably the most important town of the Department—and lying in approximately '7° N. latitude. The neighborhood of Remedios has been long celebrated for its production of the precious metal. Alluvial gold in large quantities has been obtained from the vicinity for upwards of two centuries; and even to-day a large proportion of the population finds a comfortable livelihood, during the dry season, in washing the sands of various rivers, notably the Rio Porce; while the amount of gold, in the form of nuggets, brought almost daily to Remedios and other points, from streams in the immediate neighborhood, is astonishing. These nuggets vary much in size. The majority, of course, are small, but larger ones are by no means scarce. I have been considerably surprised at the amount and value of the trade thus transacted between natives and merchants of the various towns. When the skip-hoist was first tried as a means of filling the blast-furnace it made a great many enemies and very few friends among furnace managers. This state of affairs continued until the Duquesne furnaces were built, which demonstrated not only the possibilities of a furnace-stack in the way of production, but also the ability of the skip-hoist to charge the materials necessary to produce the large tonnlage obtained. Every furnace manager, who has operated stacks fitted with the vertical hoist and the hand-barrow system of filling, remembers that the momentous question about the furnace, particularly during a good run, was: "Are you keeping her full ?" and many a good run has been spoiled by the furnace " getting away from the men." With the new birth of the skip-hoist this trouble was eliminated ; but alas! Other and more important difficulties arose. The distribution of the stock, the importance of which is never learned until many different ores and fuels have been tried, demanded closer attention. With all the defects of the hand-barrow system, the distribution—When the top fillers were conscientious in carrying out the scheme of filling arranged after thoughtful consideration by the manager—mas above criticism. It is said that the modern skip-hoist, equipped with an elliptical hopper and receiving-cylinder, and discharging over a small bell into the main hopper, will give just as good results as those obtained with hand-barrow charging, but I cannot agree with this statement. The old adage, " Necessity is the mother of invention," is fully borne out in the case of the device described in this paper. About four years ago the firm of the writer received instructions from Sir John Hawkshaw, C. E., and I. Wolf Barry, Esq., C. E., to construct and erect three large Guibal fans for ventilating a portion of the Metropolitan and District Underground Railway, of London. On account of the cost of coal and the very limited space for boilers, it was arranged that the fans should be driven by gas-engines. Those who have had experience with Guibal fans will be aware that as each blade or vane passes the lower edge of the shutter a pulsatory action takes place. When the fans above mentioned were set to work, the pulsation or vibration of the immense volumes of air discharged was so great that it caused a corresponding vibration of the window-sashes, doors, etc., of the surrounding buildings; and this was so unpleasant that the shopkeepers and others near obtained an injunction against the railroad company, compelling it to stop one of the fans. The work was by this time out of our hands, and we only casually heard what had taken place, learning also that, in addition to this injunction, another was threatened in the case of the second fan, and that the railroad company had thus far escaped the enforcement of this threat by agreeing to run the second fan at a few short stated intervals only during each day. In considering the case, it occurred to us to incline the lower edge of the shutter, instead of making it parallel with the axis of the fan,. by which means we thought that the waves of air might be broken

THE fluorescence of scheelite has been an important aid in recent years in the discovery and development of scheelite deposits. The use of fluorescence of synthetic compounds in industry, particularly in advertising, also has expanded greatly during the past decade. As a result, a number of new and convenient units for producing ultraviolet energy have become available, which have led to a greater application of fluorescence in the study of minerals. Studies have shown that the fluorescent color of a mineral may vary: (I) with the kind and quantity of trace elements, and (2) with the particular wave length of ultraviolet energy used. The wave length is dependent first on the type of generating equipment used, and finally on the filter employed to remove the visible light that may be present. A number of so-called ultraviolet lamps are listed and described, together with suitable filters known to be available. Scheelite fluoresces brilliantly with wave lengths of 2200 to about 3000Å., but not with longer wave lengths. The most convenient and efficient sources of ultraviolet for scheelite fluorescence- are portable and laboratory units designed particularly for use with scheelite. So-called ultraviolet light globes of the photo-flood type emit wave lengths too long to cause scheelite to fluoresce. Attention is called to the minerals that fluoresce in a manner similar to scheelite, which necessitates a check test by means of characteristic physical properties. Chemical tests are the final authority both for identity and content of tungsten in scheelite ore.

THE coercimeter, as its name implies, is an instrument for measuring the coercive force[+] of magnetic substances. It was developed by Davis and Hartenheim in the Special Studies Section, Metallurgical Division. A detailed description of this apparatus may be found elsewhere.2 The coercive force determinations of magnetic materials are interesting because of the relationship established by Gottschalk,4 who showed a linear relationship between the magnetization coercive force and the specific surface of comminuted particles. The value of this relationship in determining grinding efficiency has been shown by Dean.3 The determination of the surface contained in the subsieve sizes has always been a difficult problem for investigators. They made approximate measurements of the surface of coarse materials by sizing on screens, but for the determination of the surface of the sub- sieve sizes it was necessary to make detailed grain counts or elutriation tests, or to study dissolution rates. The technical literature contains many references to other methods for determining these surfaces, either by some special apparatus or by mathematical calculations based on distribution lines. Many of the methods are long and tedious, and the results of some, at least, are questionable. The turbidimeter gives quick results on ground cement. By using magnetite as the material to be ground, a simple determination of its coercive force by the coercimeter, requiring 10 minutes or less, can be transposed directly and accurately into units of relative surface. This subject has been pursued further by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo., and the following is a description of the results.

The present paper is a continuation of the work on the relationship between the magnetic and the phase transformations in carbon steels during quenching. An account was given by the author in a previous paperl† of an investigation of this relationship during a continuous quench. The experimental difficulties then encountered prevented a conclusive proof of the existence or absence of such a relationship. The conclusions of the previous paper were derived indirectly. The present paper deals with the same problem, but the method of attack is modified. The technique developed by Davenport and Bain2 in their well-known study of austenite transformation at subcritical temperature was adopted in the present investigation. They have shown that the austenite to martensite transformation can be caused to proceed at a relatively slow rate by quenching steels into a hot metal bath. Slowing down of the rate of transformation, together with an observation by Lewis3 that a eutectoid steel can be preserved in the nonmagnetic state by such quenching, pointed out a possibility of a study of both transformations under more favorable conditions than previously described. The preliminary steps were connected with the technique of the hot bath quench. To study this phase of the present work a modification of the apparatus previously described' was used. The modification consisted in the use of a hot quenching bath instead of brine, and in fixing the secondary and the primary coils of the apparatus in a stationary position in and around the bath. Tubular specimens, as in the previous investigation, were heated in a suitable furnace to a temperature in the austenitic range for the given steel and then were dropped into the quenching apparatus. The quenching bath was heated to a series of temperatures within the probable range at which the austenite to martensite transformation was expected to proceed at the slowest rate. Observations

Spodumene is a lithium-bearing pyroxene, and is an important source of lithium compounds. Because of its high alumina and lithia content, it might be a desirable constituent of glass batches. The use of spodumene in ceramics will undoubtedly increase, as it has been shown that a mixture of the proper proportions of this mineral with soda feldspar and potash feldspar has a much lower maturing temperature upon firing than has any one of the three components. The mineral spodumene seldom occurs as pure mineral, but ordinarily with feldspars, mica and quartz. All spodumene-bearing rocks tested contained these minerals as gangue. Small amounts of iron and manganese oxides also were present, usually as stains on the silicate grains. Mica associated with the spodumene carried a considerable amount of lithia. This was discovered in flotation tailings, which, although virtually free of spodumene grains when examined microscopically, showed 0.4 to 0.5 per cent Li²O on chemical analysis. The lithia content of micas picked from the North Carolina spodumene rock was variable. Some samples contained little lithia, others more than 3 per cent. In 1938, under the supervision of Oliver C. Ralston,S the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Tennessee Mineral Products Corporation, undertook to study the beneficiation of North Carolina spodumene by froth flotation. The Bureau had previously published investigations on the beneficiation of spodumene.2,3The methods described in the second publication3 did not give good results with badly weathered spodumene rock, so that more thorough investigation of the subject was warranted. Prior to 1885, the College of Engineering in the State University was under the care of such professors and instructors as were required for efficient work in the Schools of Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Architecture. The development of the coal and other important mineral resources of the commonwealth led gradually to a considerable demand for instruction in the branches more closely related to mining engineering, and a very creditable effort was made to meet this want by arranging special work in the field and in the laboratory for students of mining and metallurgy. This plan, while it gave much added labor to several already heavily taxed professors, caused such students to become something like undesirable excrescences upon the regular courses. But its partial success gave abundant proof of the real necessity for a complete course in Mining Engineering. The famous Braidwood disaster emphasized anew the importance of thorough training on the part of those to whom the responsible duties of mining must be confided. As is well known, a very excellent beginning was made some years ago by the Legislature in the matters of inspection and regulation by the enactment of a reasonably effective law, which was afterward much improved.* About the date of the last Acts, it was deemed wise to enlarge the facilities at the University arid to furnish adequate training for the increasing number of applicants. Accordingly, in August, 1885, the writer was requested to assume the duties of the professorship, it being the expressed desire of the Board of Trustees and the Regent of the University that a School of Mining Engineering should be founded which might eventually come to rank with the other engineering schools already flourishing here. ONLY during the past few years, have the old-fashioned methods for treating ores and byproducts progressed to any marked degree. The advent of multiple-hearth roasting, blast roasting, the baghouse, and the Cottrell plant indicate this change. It is the ability to roast and smelt sulfide ores and concentrates that gave this later advance. Further investigations that will solve the problem of efficient handling of flotation concentrates and their attendant ills are of the utmost importance. With future developments, the metallurgist will be able to smelt more economically and to treat still more refractory ores, making the early methods appear small by comparison. GROWTH OF SMELTING Well within the memory of pioneer smeltermen, the ore was charged directly into the blast furnace as it came from the mine;, only the richer, ores were smelted, the lower grade and sulfide ores were undesirable. Matte was, at first, thrown away and only two products) were desired-slag and lead bullion. Scores of the early smelting companies failed because of improper reduction of ores, high costs, short- furnace campaigns, inability to treat sulfide ores, and ores containing-zinc. With the failure of weaker companies, consolidation eliminated many others, until today the field is dominated by a comparatively few organizations, each strong financially. Formerly, a few thousand dollars would erect a small plant, whereas the modern smelter costs over a million dollars. Ore and products to which formerly no attention was paid are now treated with comparative ease and at a good profit. Mechanical improvements have modernized smelting, furnace tonnages show an increase, and metal recoveries have made enormous strides. Even though costs have decreased, they have not dropped in proportion to the improvements, because of the higher wages, greater costs of fluxes and coke, more undesirable ores smelted, etc.

ALTHOUGH the first colonists in the area that is now the United States, whether Spanish, French or English in nationality, were usually keenly interested in the possibilities of mineral wealth, it is a curious and interesting fact that none of them happened upon the mineral deposits that eventually were to make this the greatest mineral-producing country; up to 1800 it would probably have been rated as rather poor in minerals. Spanish explorers traversed the southeastern United States with- out finding the Appalachian gold deposits that aroused so much interest in the early nineteenth century; Coronado sought in vain for the seven golden cities of Cibola; and the important gold deposits of California were not discovered until the political sovereignty of the region had passed from Mexico, which had held it for three centuries. The French also held Canada for nearly two centuries (and the British for another century) without finding the mineral deposits in Ontario and Quebec that now are so important. Though they knew of the copper of the Keweenaw peninsula, the lead ores of Wisconsin and Missouri, and the coal of Illinois in the seventeenth century, these deposits were all too remote for exploitation. In the area held by Great Britain, iron smelting was planned at Jamestown as early as 1619 and was actually begun at Lynn, Mass., in 1643. The industry grew slowly, at first, but had reached considerable importance before the Revolution. Commercial bituminous coal mining began about 1750 in Virginia but anthracite mining in Pennsylvania was not started until 1800. As a result there was naturally little interest in the technical aspects of mineral production here before 1800 by any except the few people who were actually engaged in it. The rate of nucleation and the rates of both lateral and longitudinal growth of martensite plates (needles) in b—a transformation were determined as a function of temperature, in various U-Cr alloys. The activation energies for nucleation and both modes of growth were calculated from the experimental results. The identical values for lateral and longitudinal growth clearly indicate that both are controlled by the WHITE,' Mott and Hines and Holdeen3 showed that characteristic martensite plates (needles) appear in U-Cr alloys during the transformation 8 —0 in the lower temperature range (up to -300°C). Holden pointed out that the rate of growth of the individual martensite plates under isothermal conditions is same mechanism. Lomer's suggestion that single-atom movement over subatomic distances controls the specially slow growth of martensite receives further support from the present kinetic study, which shows that the growth rate can be described quantitatively by known formulas for the growth rate in processes involving single-atom movement. very slow, and suggested that this is due to the slowness of the relief of the stresses engendered during the growth of the individual plates. lomer4 attributed the slow growth to the complexity of the atomic adjustment at the growing interface b/(u. In the present work the rates of nucleation and growth of martensite plates in U-Cr alloys were studied by direct observation, in order to elucidate the mechanism which controls their characteristic slow growth.

A microcrack process zone is frequently suggested to accompany macrofractures in rock and play an important role in the resistance to fracture propagation. Attenuation of surface waves propagating through mode I fractures in wedge-loaded double-cantilever beam specimens of Westerly granite has been recorded in an attempt to characterize the structure of the fracture process zone. The ultrasonic measurements do not support the generally accepted model of a macroscopic fracture that incrementally propagates with the accompaniment of a cloud of microcracks. Instead, fractures in Westerly granite appear to form as gradually separating surfaces within a zone having a width of a few millimeters and a length of several tens of millimeters. A fracture process zone of this size would necessitate the use of meter-sized specimens in order for linear elastic fracture mechanics to be applicable.

This paper presents the results of a research effort to develop a technique for estimating in situ stresses by measuring stress-induced velocity anisotropy around a borehole. Relevant parameters required to make the estimate were identified and measured in the laboratory on a 35.6 cm (14.0 in) cube of Nugget sandstone with a 10.2 cm (4.0 in) diameter hole, under biaxial loading. Two pairs each of radially and tangentially polarized transducers were placed inside the hole with displacement directions either parallel or perpendicular to the principal stress directions. With this configuration, relative travel times were measured by both a pulsed phaselocked loop technique and a cross correlation of digitized waveforms. The biaxial velocity data were used to back-calculate the applied stress. The standard deviation of the differences between the calculated and applied stresses is 0.62 MPa (90 psi) for a stress level up to 8.63 MPa (1250 psi).

In a paper, entitled A Uniform Method for the Assay of 'Copper Material for Gold and Silver,' A. R. Ledoux invited the assayers of this country to contribute to a symposium, in which the results of their assays of given samples of copper-matte and metallic copper would be made comparable. This symposiun 2 appeared about one year thereafter; and through it and its discussion, first became generally known the fact that the gold-yield by the all-fire method of assaying is usually higher than by the so-called combination (wet and dry) method, in which nitric acid is employed as a solvent for the copper. In the publication alluded to, the supposed cause of gold-losses in the latter method was declared to be the solvent action of copper nitrate, or of the reduction-products of the nitric acid, upon the gold. Up to a very recent date, gold has been held to be insoluble in pure nitric acid.
