TITANIUM, because of its high strength, weight ratio, and high melting point, became the metal of the jet age. Zirconium, because of its low neutron cross section and high corrosion resistance to hot water, became an integral part of the nuclear era. Since both metals are very similar chemically, more or less the same process is used for their production. The sudden rise of this new industry of titanium and zirconium seems to have caused some uncertainty as to the future development of processes for making these metals. Although zirconium was discovered in 1789 and titanium in 1790, it was not until 1945, six years after W. J. Kroll patented his process, that F, S. Wartman of the U. S. Bureau of Mines perfected the technique of producing ductile titanium, and it was not until 1946 that Kroll perfected the technique of producing ductile zirconium in commercial quantities. Since then the Government and private industry have spent millions of dollars each year constantly searching for new methods, with the hope that some day titanium can be produced as economically as aluminum and magnesium or as cheaply as stainless steel.

When Hugh Lee Pattinson discovered, in 1829, that the crystals formed during the slow cooling of molten lead were poorer, and the remaining liquid richer in silver, than the original lead, an important step was made in the metallurgy of this metal. Being the first process applicable to the desilverization of low-grade lead bullion, it soon found its way into all European countries having such a product to treat, thereby effecting the saving of many ounces of silver annually which previously had been thrown away. The old hand process was expensive, as viewed from the standpoint of more modern methods; the labor was great and the tonnage was small, but on the other hand the results were fairly satisfactory. This process flourished for some time after the introduction of the cheaper Parkes process in 1852 and it is still in use in a few European smelteries. Only one notable improvement was made on the original process, that of Luce and Rozan at Marseilles, France. It consisted in the application of steam for stirring and the tapping of one-third of the liquid lead, through perforated plates covering the tap holes flush with the bottom of the kettle, thus leaving two-thirds in the form of crystals in the original kettle. This modification considerably lowered the operating costs as it permitted of much larger kettles, an increased tonnage and eliminated much of the slow, hard labor of the hand process. The Luce and Rozan process has persisted in its original form to the present day. Stephen Tredinnick, English born, spent most of his years around the Luce and Rozan plants at Marseilles and elsewhere in Europe, coming later to Eureka, Nev., in 1878, to operate the Luce and Rozan plant at that point. Mr. Tredinnick was a competent Luce and Rozan operator and being devoted to the process he firmly believed that with modifications the costs could be so lowered as eventually to supplant the Parkes process. REGISTRATION started bright and early Monday morning in the Silver Corridor at the Waldorf-Astoria with Mrs. W. H. Bassett as chairman. What a registration-over 200 ladies! Several joined us from as far away as California and Washington State. Apparently they enjoy our meetings so much that present travel inconveniences didn't discourage their coming. At noon the ladies joined the men at the All-Institute Luncheon and Monday evening we had our informal dance, which is separately reported. Tuesday morning was devoted to our annual meeting at which all Section annual reports were read. At noon we were all the guests of the W.A.A.I.M.E. at a luncheon at the Port Arthur Restaurant on Mott St. in Chinatown. Many of us rode down on the old 3d Ave. elevated railway-the last of four. It, too, is soon to be torn down. The luncheon was delightfully unusual, with huge dishes of delicious Chinese food on each table. Our chairman, Mrs. Read, who lived in China in her youth chose our menu, and she chose it well, for most of us indulged so heartily that as we arose from the table we felt we couldn't eat again for 24 hours. Someone donated sherry wine, and boxes of Chinese pencils as favors. We wonder who? All owe a big vote of thanks for this lovely party to Mrs. T. T. Read and Mrs. H. A. Prosser, chairmen, and Mrs. H. W. Hardinge, Mrs. R. Hursh, and Mrs. R. L. Lloyd, vice-chairmen.

Hardenability (multiplying) factors for carbon, mongonese, silicon, chromium, nickel, and molybdenum have been developed for hypereutectoid low-alloy steels in which bainite is the first subcritical transformation product. These factors permit the calculation of 95, 80, and 50 pct martensite hardenability from chemical composition when steels with spheroidized structures are quenched from 1475°, 1525°, and 1575°F. The strong contributions to hardenability of the less expensive elements, silicon and manganese, suggest their use to obtain additional hardenability in hypereutectoid low-alloy steels. DURING the past decade a number of investigators'"11 have carefully developed information which permits calculation of the hardenability of medium -carbon low-alloy steels from chemical composition and grain size. DURING 1956 the application of geology and related scientific disciplines to the search for new mineral deposits went forward on an ever widening front. Spurred on by record-breaking consumption of many of the established commodities and new uses for minerals and metals that were hardly known a few years ago, the profession is figuratively leaving no stone unturned in the effort to insure that adequate raw material supplies will be avail- able for the future. More money was spent and more people were engaged along more lines of research than ever before. A huge project to map much of the Canadian Shield area by photogeologic methods stands at one extreme; application of isotope ratios to ore finding stands at the other; between them the more traditional techniques are being increasingly refined. In the Fiftieth Anniversary volume of Economic Geology, published late in 1955, Alan Bateman sketches the development of fundamental concepts as recorded in the pages of the journal over the first five decades. An additional 24 review articles cover individual aspects of the field and constitute a base for further advances.

In 1943, Illinois produced 82,256,000 bbl. of oil, or 5.5 per cent of the total for the United States, and ranked sixth in the nation in oil production. This represents a decline of 23 per cent from 1942, when the total Illinois production was 106,ggo,o~~ bbl. and Illinois ranked fifth. The daily average production for 1943 was approximately 225,000 bbl. THE name molybdena was employed by Pliny to denote various substances resembling lead. Later this name was applied to galena-the naturally occurring sulfide of lead-or substances of similar appearance. By the middle of the eighteenth century, it was applied to graphite and to the mineral sulfide of molybdenum (MoS2) now called molybdenite. This confusion is quite understand- able inasmuch as these substances look and feel very much alike. In 1778, the Swedish chemist Scheele published a treatise in which he pointed out essential differences between graphite and molybdenite. On treatment with nitric acid, molybdenite, unlike graphite, produced a peculiar white earth with acidic properties which he called molybdic acid. Since the same mineral gave off sulfurous fumes on heating, he concluded that it was a sulfide of molybdenum. In 1790, there appeared an account of the isolation by P. J. Hjelm of the new element molybdenum, as a metallic powder, by heating the oxide with carbon. It was not until Bertelius conducted the necessary experiments, about 1818 to 1825, that the foundation of the chemistry of molybdenum was laid. The only recorded use of molybdenum during the first century after its isolation was as a chemical reagent, primarily for the determination of phosphorus. It was not until the last decade of the nineteenth century that the use of molybdenum in steel appears to have been investigated. A

The deposit of rock-salt which is known to exist along the eastern shore of Lake Huron, in the province of Ontario, has lately been more completely explored than before, by a boring with a diamond drill, put down by Henry Attrill, Esq., of New York City, and the results obtained are so important in every way that I make no apology for presenting them to the Institute of Mining Engineers. I may be permitted to preface an account of this remarkable exploration, and of its results, with a historical sketch of the discovery and development of this salt-region. It was in December, 1865, that a boring was begun near the town of Goderich, in the hope of finding petroleum. In this the adventurers were disappointed, but, after passing through about 800 feet of limestone, they encountered a series of variegated marls, in which, at a, depth of 964 feet from the surface, a bed of rock-salt, 30 feet in thickness, was met with in May, 1866. The boring was carried to a depth of 1010 feet, ending in hard rock, and yielded, by pumping, a very pure saturated brine when examined by me in August of the same year. In the report of the Geological Survey of Canada for 1863-66, published early in 1867, I described this salt-well, with many geological details, and gave an analysis of the brine. In the next three years a considerable number of wells was sunk in and around Goderich, and numerous trials were made in various other parts of the region. Salt was found at Kincardine, thirty miles north-northeast from Goderich, at a depth of about 900 feet, and also at Clinton, thirteen miles southeast, at 1180 feet. Records of these wells, with analyses of the brine from them, were given by myself in a subsequent report of the Geological Survey, 1866-69, published in 1870 (pp. 211-244), together with accounts of various unsuccessful borings in the neighborhood, analyses of the brines from the various wells (including one analysis by Dr. Goessmann), with many details of the salt-manufacture at Goderich, at Syracuse, New York, and at Saginaw, Michigan. THE decision of the Supreme Court of the United States not to review the findings of the lower courts closes an interesting chapter in the mining litigation that has arisen as a result of the extralateral feature of the mining law. The time seems opportune to record some of the important geological features, and also some of the legal features, of the controversy, in the hope that these will be permanently accessible to members of the mining profession. After many rumors of litigation, the Utah Consolidated Mining Co. sued its neighbor for the ore that had been, it was alleged, wrongfully extracted from its so-called Yampa limestone lode. This ore lay beneath Utah-Apex surface and was claimed by virtue of the extralateral rights conferred on the Utah Consolidated Co. through the ownership of certain specific mining claims, one of the principal claims being the Yampa. Previous to bringing suit, the Utah Consolidated Co. had strengthened its position by purchasing the Old Yampa mine and by making an agreement with the Utah Metal & Tunnel Co., which gave it clearer title to the outcrop of the Highland Boy limestone. Access to the workings of the Utah-Apex Co. was secured and reciprocal privileges gave Utah-Apex representatives the right to enter the properties of the Utah Consolidated Co. This resulted in the Utah-Apex immediately bringing countersuit for ore alleged to have been wrongfully extracted from under its surface in the Leadville country, see Fig. 4. Six cases came up for consideration: five related to the original suit and the countersuit, and one related to the Dana extralateral claims of the Utah-Apex Co.

Mineral exploration in the United States relies heavily on theoretical geologic concepts and indirect methods such as geophysics and geochemical prospecting, as there are few exposed areas of mineralization which have not already been explored. In Mexico, ore grade samples can be cut at the surface on vein, replacement, and disseminated types of deposits in many areas. The problem is not in finding a mineralized area but in deciding which mineralized area can be explored and developed at the least risk and cost, with the greatest profit potential within the framework of Mexican mineral economics and that nation's government policies. Socio-economic Posture Mexico, prior to World War II, had suffered from more than one hundred years of intermittent wars and exploitation by internal and foreign elements. Consequently, the basic facilities which today's society takes for granted were scarce or non-existent in most of the country. Travel was largely a matter of negotiating poor dirt roads, riding horseback or walking. Relatively few people were literate and medical facilities were luxuries for the wealthy. Mexico's leaders were, however, determined to improve the lot of their people, within a system of private enterprise and personal freedom. Long-range programs initiated at about the time of World War II to provide infrastructure-education, health and welfare, transportation, power, water, communication-are now established fully or in part for most of the country and are being continually expanded.

All available data concerning risk as it applies to scaling up pyrometallurgical plants, processes, and equipment are determined to estimate the statistical chance of success. Random numbers are assigned to all data in order to avoid any chance of bias. The data bank is organized in such a way that an estimate can be made of the degrees of risk involved over a wide range of circumstances. Included are duplicating existing designs and large commercial installations based on smaller commercial installations, pilot models, or bench models.

The first National Industrial Conference was disbanded without accomplishing the results hoped for. A second conference is to be called in the near future. In response to suggestions of members of the Founder Societies, the following telegram was sent, Oct. 29, to the President and each member of his cabinet. "Engineering Council respectfully recommends appointing on new Industrial Conference two or more engineers familiar with industrial problems. Council represents five national societies of professional engineers having forty-one thousand members. Washington office in McLachlen Building."

There were 15 gas wells with an initial open flow of 6,383,150 cu. ft., 4 oil wells with about 40 bbl. initial production, and 63 dry holes. The wildcatting followed the widely publicized leasing activity in the Forrest City Basin in northwestern Missouri, northeastern Kansas, southeastern Nebraska and southwestern Iowa.
